Plans to redevelop on the former Walker Press property (Paris Graphic), located at the corner of Yeo and Willow Streets in Paris, were unveiled to the Brant Heritage Committee on October 5th. The newest owners of 3 and 7 Yeo Street will demolish the existing building to construct a 6-storey residential building with a total of 62 one and two-bedroom units, complete with underground parking. COMMUNITY NEWS New owners hope to rebuild on former Walker Press site

By Casandra Turnbull A six-storey residential development is being proposed for the vacant Walker Press Building land on the corner of Yeo Street and Willow Street in Paris.

Scott Patterson, representing Patterson Planning Consultants, was before the Brant Heritage Committee on October 5th to

present renderings and concept plans for the land, which currently houses the remnants of the Walker Press company, an integral business in Paris for more than 60 years.

Patterson Planning Consultants, representing the newest owners of 3 and 7 Yeo Street, presented the plans for the proposed Willow Grove project. It will feature a

mixture of one and two-bedroom townhouses in a newly constructed six-storey building. To proceed with the project, they will require an Official Plan amendment, permits from the Grand River Conservation Authority and a demolition permit.

It was stipulated that prior to a demolition permit application being accepted for the portions of the buildings recognized by the County of Brant Heritage Inventory as having potential cultural heritage significance, that an evaluation be completed to determine potential next steps for Council.

The Lions Club of Paris would like to welcome its newest member Itolan (Itee) Obayuwana. Welcoming Itee is Paris Lions Chief Rod Laframboise, RC Ray Derouin and her sponsor Ted Bickell. The call for more ‘friends of the Lions’ came at the end of summer as the club geared up for a very busy September and October. Like many service clubs and groups, Covid impacted the club’s membership and with many of the Lions getting older, the Club is asking the community to step forward and help fill some voids. Paris Lions Club held its first meeting close to 100 years ago on March 16, 1931, and since then has been instrumental in supporting many community, provincial and federal initiatives. Brant Eats postponed until 2024, refunds are coming

By Casandra Turnbull An exciting new culinary experience will have to wait until 2024.

The inaugural Brant Eats Food and Drink event, scheduled to take place in St. George next Friday, October 27th, has been postponed until 2024, organizers announced this week.

“We've had to make the difficult decision to postpone Brant Eats due to a lack of vendor participation,” said Sue Morton in an email to the Paris Independent. Morton is Executive Director of the Paris and District Chamber of Commerce, a co-host of the event, along with the St. George Business Association.

The County of Brant Economic Development was a

sponsor of the event, offering the space at the Gaukel Centre.

Organizers were hoping to host approximately 30-34 food and beverage vendors, who would serve samples of their products while guests mixed and mingled.

“It's a difficult time for our local food and beverage businesses and the PDCC wants to support them, so we're going to regroup and launch the event in early 2024.

Ticket holders will be refunded,” she added.

“Stay tuned for details on the new date. We're counting on the community to come out and support local!”

Morton said they are working to refund ticket holders.

Enbridge Gas’ $250,000 donation to the Safe Community Project Assist will benefit 50 Fire Departments across Ontario and Brant County is one of them.

On October 18th, Enbridge Gas presented the County of Brant Fire Department with a $5,000 cheque to be used to help purchase firefighting training materials to assist in lifesaving techniques. The donation comes from the Safe Community Project Assist, a program operated by the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council (FMPFSC), which supplements existing training for Ontario volunteer and composite fire departments in the communities where Enbridge Gas operates.

Applications for the Community Toy and Hamper program will be available starting November 1st at the County of Brant Service office, 66 Grand River St. N in Paris.

Monetary donations for which receipts will be issued can be made at the office.

Donations of hats and mitts are also welcome.

Non-perishable food items and new toys can be dropped of at the County of Brant Service Office (Paris), LCBO, CIBC, TD, YNCU Credit Union and The Full Plate.

Once again, our local schools will be participating in our program by collecting items throughout November and December.

Our local Paris Firefighters Club and Ontario Provincial Police - West Region will be again working with the "Fill a Vehicle" program collecting non-perishable items and donations Dec. 9/10 and Dec.16/17 at No Frills, Sobeys, and Foodland in Burford and St. George.

COMMUNITY NEWS Local woman receives agricultural related scholarship Bella Todd is one of six Ontario Students receiving the OAAS Central Canada Exhibition Association Scholarship The Paris Agricultural Society was sending a big congratulations to a local woman and former Paris Fair Ambassador on her recent academic achievement.

Congratulations to Bella Todd for being a recipient of the OAAS Central Canada Exhibition Association Scholarship!

This scholarship awards six Ontario students for their involvement in their local agricultural societies and recognizes they’re volunteering in both their local and school communities.

Bella is an incredibly active member in all of her communities. The Paris Agricultural Society is benefited by Bella’s dedication through her involvement as a Junior Director on our Board of Directors, as well as her involvement in various committees such as the Junior Baking Committee and the Ambassador Committee.

She was the 2021 Paris Fair Ambassador and because of her love of entering exhibits into the fair, during her reign she worked with the board’s Junior Department to create an Ambassador’s Choice category for entries.

Bella is currently in her final year at the University of Waterloo majoring in Biochemistry. She is an active member in the science community through her involvement with the Let’s Talk Science introductory to science programs, both her teaching assistant position and research project, and role as student director on the Faculty of Science Foundation!

Bella continually brings a passion for her community, youth involvement and education paired with her welcoming personality everywhere she goes!

H E A LT H C A R E N E W S Road closures around Brantford General Hospital as Emergency Department renovation is underway – plan your route Brantford, ON – The renovation project to improve the Emergency Department (ED) at the Brantford General Hospital (BGH) is underway.

As the Brant Community Healthcare System (BCHS) undertakes this important project to support the delivery of timely and high-quality patient care, a portion of Terrace Hill Street will be temporarily closed. The street was closed from St. Paul Avenue to Elizabeth Street starting October 16, 2023. While the renovation project is anticipated to take 3.5 years, the road closure will be in effect for approximately one year.

“The planned renovation improvements to the Emergency Department will support better patient flow and a more modern facility to serve the health care needs of the community,” said Dr. Somaiah Ahmed, Chief + Medical Director of Emergency Medicine, BCHS. “Thank you for your patience and support as we complete the renovations. Our doctors, staff and volunteers are ready to assist residents who need care.”

All hospital parking lots remain open. The McClure Centre and hospital parking lot B will only be

available via Dundas Street.

McClure Avenue will be closed at Terrace Hill Street for all traffic except emergency vehicles only.

Hospital parking lot C will remain open and the entrance/exit will remain unaffected, however approach is only possible from Terrace Hill between Elizabeth Street and West Street.

Residents are asked to follow the signage posted in and around the hospital for their safety during this period.

As the BCHS Foundation office is located adjacent to the ED construction area please note the following impact to its operations: - We kindly ask that if you wish to visit the Foundation office to please call in advance to make an appointment at 519-755-5510 - Non-emergent patients and visitors to the BGH must utilize the D Wing entrance.

- The A Wing entrance will be reserved for emergency and dialysis drop-off only. Please remember that there is no parking in the roundabout.

- The parking garage and Lot F (near E-wing) will be reserved for patient and visitor parking Although physical work has begun on the Emergency Department Renovation Improvement Project, the need for donor dollars still remains. Funds must be raised for the purchase of all medical equipment, furnishings and fixtures for the renovated Emergency Department – these are not covered or cost shared by the Ministry of Health.

L O C A L H I S TO RY Corner Holds Memories of Paris' Industrial Past

The bustling corner of Yeo and Willow Street in Paris, Ontario, has long been home to a rich industrial history, with its shops powered by the innovative dam and raceway.

Among the notable establishments that once thrived in this vibrant area were the Paris Foundry and Agricultural Works, the Knitting Mills of Mr. John Penman, and the renowned Walker Press. Today, we delve into the stories and memories shared by those who witnessed the glory days of these iconic businesses.

In 1859, Mr. David Maxwell founded the Paris Foundry and Agricultural Works.

Initially specializing in farming implements and machinery, the foundry soon became a hub of innovation. Mr. Maxwell, a brilliant mind, introduced a patent change stop and an inversible feed for straw cutters. With a workforce of 30 to 40 skilled individuals, the business flourished, leading to the construction of a new building.

However, in 1888, the Paris Foundry and Agricultural Works relocated to St. Marys, Ontario, bidding farewell to its Willow Street origins.

Despite its departure, the legacy of the Paris Foundry persisted.

This photograph depicts a set of Willow Street shops and factories ca. 1880-90. . Paris Museum and Historical Society Evolving from its agricultural focus, the foundry expanded its product range to include plows, harrows, scufflers, binders, hay mowers, tedders, sulky rakes, hay loaders, root cutters, corn shellers, ringer washing machines, lawn mowers, food grinders, and churns.

During World War II, the foundry shifted its production to meet the demand for hand grenades.

However, the post-war era proved challenging, and in 1964, the St. Mary’s Foundry and Agricultural Works ceased operations. The once-thriving factory met its end in 1987 when it was demolished, leaving behind a rich history of industrial innovation.

Simultaneously, Mr. John Penman established Knitting Mills in Paris in 1867, a prominent establishment dedicated to producing highquality knitted goods. Their range included shirts, drawers, ladies' and

gentlemen's hose, mitts for ladies and children, gaiters, and various types of stocking yarns. Penmans erected a new structure across the street from its No. 2 Mill in proximity to the Maxwell building, After the Maxwell Foundry relocated to St. Marys Penman’s took over the former factory and called it the Maxwell Wing.

The year 1909 marked the birth of the Walker Press, a renowned printing plant that would eventually find its home on the corner of Willow and Yeo Street. occupying the Penman's building in 1915. Their expansion proved fruitful, leading to the Walker Press taking over the Maxwell Wing in 1920. As the printing plant thrived and expanded, so did its physical footprint, the last business to occupy this building was Paris Graphic 1977 – 2021.

L O C A L H I S TO RY Longtime Paris resident shared his memories First published back in November of 2021, we had reached out to the community to collect personal stories and memories of the Walker Press. The response was overwhelming, with numerous individuals sharing their unique experiences or recounting anecdotes passed down from friends and relatives. Below, we present one such submission that offered a glimpse into the past: Submitted by Gord Labron As a child I grew up on Walnut Lane directly behind the Walker Press. In my early days there was a parking lot at the south end of the Walker Press before they put an addition on. We used to ride our tricycles there. When the addition was put on the building it came right up tight to Walnut Lane. This wall made a great backstop for a lacrosse ball either using a lacrosse stick or just throwing the rubber ball against the building and catching it on the rebound with a baseball glove.

The wall also worked well as a backstop for pucks as I practiced being a goalie and my brother would shoot pucks at me. If we tried this during the week some guy would come out the side door and make us stop. Guess we made too much noise. Weekends we were free and clear. There was only one window facing Walnut Lane and it hinged out. As kids we would go there and stick our heads in and usually Mr. Creeden

Located at 1 - 3 Yeo street, with the oldest portion of the structure – the Maxwell wing – built in 1872, The Walker Press (est. 1910) moved into the Penman Wing in 1915. Expanding into the Maxwell wing in 1920, connecting the two buildings in the process, The Walker Press operated for over 60 years, printing everything from gift coupons to royal portraits.

(I believe his name was), would be working near it and he would give us all some transfers that we took home, and our mothers would iron them on our tee shirts. We hardly ever missed getting them from him. Mr. Martin had a red setter dog I believe it was and he would let it out of his office onto the roof.

The dog would run over to the edge where it could hear us playing and bark at us. There was a low spot on the roof maybe six feet high and we would try and get the dog to jump down. Clearly the dog was smarter than us because it never did. This low section was a spot we were able to get on the roof when needed to get balls we lost up there. This had to be done on weekends so we would not get caught. The only downside of the

expanded Walker Press was that when the addition was put on the staff parking lot was gone. The town I assumed then dug into the hill behind our home to make parking for the staff. We used to be able to toboggan down the hill right up to the fence in our backyard fence. With the hill being dug out there was now and still is a big drop off if you slid down the hill. Too high to slide over and get hurt.

The memories of the Paris Foundry, the Knitting Mills, and the Walker Press continue to resonate with the residents of Paris. While the buildings continue to be redeveloped, their stories live on, reminding us of the industrious spirit that once thrived along Willow Street.

S P O RT S Junior Panthers offence awakens in 34-8 win over North Park Paris Panthers Reports with George Le Gresley

If Junior Football head coach Steve Fergus’ biggest wish was that his offence would wake up and play offence in the first quarter and carrying on for the rest of a game, his wish came true!

On October 13, the PDHS junior football offence came alive and with the help of a strong defence line, Paris rolled over North Park 34-8.

There were three rushing touchdowns by QB Canaan Sherbino, RB Cash Kowalsky and Matt Mahlman, two pass reception touchdowns by Easton Koen, and 4 converts by Noah Brewer. The junior Panther defence continued their steady play by holding NPC to 8 points. Brayden Trevors led the defense with a couple of crushing tackles in holding the Trojans off the board for three quarters. With a bye week and playoffs starting on October 27, the coaching staff and players have a chance to prepare for their next challenge.

S P O RT S Dramatic finish for seniors in regular season action against North Park The first quarter of the Paris-North Park senior game was scoreless with play centered between each team’s 30-yard line. North Park opened the board with a field goal and a touchdown to take a 10- 0 lead. The Panthers charged down the field with a touchdown by Adam Kozbor with 3.1 seconds left in the half. The convert kick attempt unfortunately hit the upright, leaving the score 10-6 for North Park.

The third quarter of the game was wet and rainy, yet it didn’t stop Jack Kelly from running the ball down to give Paris the lead 18-10.

North Park scored in the fourth quarter with a touchdown and a 2-point conversion, tying the game at 18.

Paris’ Jack Kelly took his run game down the field to score a touchdown and Paris fails to convert giving them a 24-18 lead.

Unfortunately, that convert fail was haunting because with 5:39 left in the game, NPC’s offence burnt 3 more minutes on the clock and they successfully completed the convert after

the touchdown to take the 25-24, one point lead. The Panther offence responded and was on a roll but was stopped when a third down pass attempt to make a first down falls incomplete.

North Park killed the clock with 2:27 left in the game.

This was game was one of the most exciting to witness this year and I’m sure the Panther staff will have a good game film to study.

Next on deck for the Panthers is a playoff game on October 27.

S P O RT S Paris Titans partner with U11 Wolfpack Team for Food Drive Collection Tonight, October 21st at 7:30 pm the Paris Titans welcome the Tavistock Braves for some PJHL hockey action at the Brant Sports Centre. The Titans are looking to pick up their second win after a slow start to the season.

During last Saturday’s home game, the Titans dropped a 7-3 game against the New Hamburg Firebirds. Derek Bush put Paris on the scoreboard in the second, followed by a goal from teammate Aidan Leblanc. Aidan Switzer found the back of the net in the third to round out scoring for the Titans.

The Titans ask that fans attending the game tonight to bring a non-perishable food item to help restock the shelves at the local food pantry.

If you can’t attend the Titans game but would like to make a contribution, please drop by the arena during the day where the U11 Wolfpack team will have a drop box located in the lobby.

Townhall date released for proposal to amalgamate local hockey clubs Caregivers, coaches, volunteers, anyone with ties to the local hockey community, will have an opportunity to learn more about a proposal to amalgamate the rep programs from Paris, Burford, Ayr and St. George.

Presidents for the clubs announced in late August that they are in initial talks to combine their rep programs to form the Brant Waterloo Minor Hockey Association. This new centre, not proposed until the 2024/2025 season, will give kids the chance to play the highest caliber of hockey available within their region. It’s a move that more and more communities are adopting in a bid to combat declining enrollment numbers and better compete with teams in larger cities across Ontario.

The Town Hall meeting to review the potential amalgamation will be held on Saturday, October 28th at 9 am in the Lafarge Hall at the Brant Sports Complex.

Following the Town Hall, there will be the opportunity to vote for PHMA members in person on November 1st, 2023, from 7-9 p.m. at the Brant Sports Complex, barring any changes from PMHA.

With the continued growing popularity of yoga, “Ayurveda” is starting to become a bit of a buzz word but few really know what it’s all about.

Ayurveda is a system of healing that encompasses one's physical constitution, emotional nature, and spiritual outlook. Like Yoga, Ayurveda dates back to 5,000 years and both are outlined in the ancient Sanskrit texts known as the Vedas. When combined, the two offer a very holistic way to living a very healthy and active life.

Often referred to as the 'wisdom of life, Ayurveda identifies three types of energies, also known as doshas. While we have each energy in our makeup, these is usually one dosha that is more dominant. It is believed that a person's combination of the three doshas is determined at the moment of conception and that this combination serves as your own personal blueprint or nature (known as 'prakriti').

The three energy forces or doshas outlined in Ayurveda are Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Do you know which one is best for you? Heidi explains the differences and how to select one that fits your body type.

The proportion of each of the three doshas constantly fluctuates according to your environment, diet, the seasons, the climate, your age, and many other factors.

Knowing your own unique composition, especially your more dominant one, can help keep your energy level, mood and general health in balance. It can also help you decide what type of yoga is best suited for you.

The three energy forces or doshas outlined in Ayurveda are Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

Vata - Those with a dominant Vata dosha are typically thin and have dry skin. They tend to be highly creative, mentally quick and enjoy being active. They can also become restless and can get tired quickly.

While they may resist it, having a routine is extremely helpful to keeping a Vata person in balance.

When unbalanced, Vatas become nervous and anxious. They are often attracted to astringent foods like salad and raw vegetables, but their constitution is better balanced by warm, cooked foods and sweet, sour and salty tastes. Vata people are more susceptible to emphysema, pneumonia, arthritis, aching joints, dry skin and hair, nerve disorders and mental confusion. Vatas do well by doing to bed by 10 PM as they need more rest than the other types. In general, people who are Vata dominant should keep a regular routine, get plenty of rest, avoid extreme cold, avoid frozen or raw foods and eat warm foods and spices.

While typically drawn to vigorous and intense yoga flows these practices tend to bring a Vata person further out of balance.

COMMUNITY NEWS Brant County plowman named Reserve Champion in the Antique Plowing division Colin Doughtery (pictured to the right), hailing from Scotland, Ontario, tied for top spot in this year’s International Plowing Match and Rural Expo (IPM) Champion Antique competition, with the tie being broken by the score for the General Appearance category. Doughtery’s late grandfather Graeme was named IPM Champion Antique seven times in total, and Honourable Mention once. His father, Ken, has plowed at the IPM in the past and his daughter Calysa plowed on the Saturday in the Junior division, placing fourth in her class. The International Plowing Match was held from September 19 to September 23 in Bowling Green (between Grand Valley and Laurel) in Dufferin County, Ontario. The IPM is a five-day celebration of agriculture and rural living. There were plowing competitions, a range of activities for people of all ages, numerous opportunities to learn about agriculture, daily live entertainment in multiple match venues, hundreds of vendors and exhibits, a wide variety of food, an RV park and more.
