FOR DEEPER REFLECTION:

Question for Children: Jesus says we should forgive from our heart. When did you ask forgiveness of someone you hurt? How did you feel?

Question for Youth: Jesus challenges us to forgive. Who needs your forgiveness? From whom do you need to ask forgiveness?

Question for Adults: Jesus tells us to forgive seventy times seven, which means always and forever. Name a time this past week when you forgave someone. Name, too, a time when you accepted another person’s forgiveness.

In biblical times, tax collectors were notorious for being dishonest, greedy individuals. They would often exploit taxpayers by exacting more than was required and keeping the excess to line their own pockets. Some, like Matthew, were Jewish citizens working for the occupying Roman force, and thus were despised by their fellow Jews. But Matthew gives us a strong example of faith. When Jesus first encountered Matthew, he said “Follow me.” Matthew’s response was one of immediate obedience – like the fishermen, he dropped everythingtofollowJesus.

The Gospel according to Matthew was written for a “Christianized” Jewish audience,Jewswhoknewthelawandtheprophets, butwerealsofollowersofJesus. Thus Matthew’s writing employs continuity with Hebrew tradition and the Old Testamentconsistently teaching that Jesus was the fulfillment of the Old Testament promises. One such example is in the infancy narrative, he mentionsthatJesus’birthtookplacetofulfilltheprophecyforetoldbyIsaiah.

“All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: ‘Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,’ which means ‘God is with us.’” (Matthew 1:22-23)

The Martha Mary Guild will have a presentation at our meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 11.

The presentation by Jamie Novak will be virtual. She was a very fascinating speaker at our meeting a few years ago. Jamie gives many hints on how to reduce clutter, a problem most of us secretly have, and the title of her presentation is "Whether it has to do with filing, too much stuff - how do we declutter what's around us?" She not only gives worthwhile suggestions, but she is also quite humorous. This promises to be a fun meeting!!

Another important aspect of the October meeting is the induction of new members. Come and make them feel welcomed. The rosary will be prayed on in the former chapel at 11:30 AM, followed by BYOL (Bring Your Own Lunch), with refreshments supplied by the Guild. The program will commence around noon. All ladies of St. Mary's and our Cohort parishes are cordially invited.

John Chrysostom, Bishop and Doctor, c. 347-407

Born the son of an imperial military officer, John studied rhetoric and theology under the best Roman scholars before converting to Christianity in 369. John preferred the simple life of a monk, and in 374, he became a hermit under the guidance of Saint Basil.

The austere life undermined his health, however, and he was forced to return home. John became a deacon in 381 and was ordained in 386 by the bishop of Antioch, whom he served for the next twelve years. It was during this time that his reputation for preaching began toRead More HERE.

Quo vadis for September 17. . .

MyDearParishioners:

Today we celebrate the Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The second reading for this Sunday speaks in its own way of the paschal mystery, and also of why we forgive one another. “None of us lives for oneself” because we “live for the Lord.” Our relationship to each other is described in terms of our relationship to God. Christ’s dying and rising models for us our own dying and rising. Forgiving is dying to damaged relationships so that we might all belong to the Lord. Forgiving means God has hold of us and enables us to act in a God-like manner.

Last week the annual Convocation of Priests of the Diocese of Trenton was a great opportunity for us to be together and consider our priestly life and how we can grow as priests, and serve the People of God in our Diocese of Trenton. I am appreciative to our parish staff and the scores of volunteers who keep the day-to-day operation of our parish movingforward. Itissoawesometoseethose whohavemadethecommitmenttoassistusin the parish office as receptionists and taking on some of the regular responsibilities for managingourparishrecords.

Congratulations to the Martha Mary Guild on another very successful clothing drive. The energy and enthusiasm radiated throughout these hallowed buildings as shoppers were warmly greeted and those of very limited means were treated with tremendous dignity and respect.

Thanks to those additional volunteers who helped this year. Well done. Start setting asideitemsfornextyear!

As we begin a new catechetical year let us remember in our prayer, regularly, those from our parish who are learning about their faith, preparing for a sacrament or charged with teaching the doctrine of the Catholic Church. Thisisaveryimportantministrythatisvitalto the mission of our Catholic Church.

The formation and education of our children is the responsibility of the entire parish…we support parents in this essential role.

Maywecontinuetogenerouslyprovideforour childrenandyoungpeople. TheRCIAteamis interviewing adults who are interested in learning more about our Catholic Church. Please reach out to Rose Farrow, if you or someone you know is interested in the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharistasanadult.

There continues to be interest in the topic of Annulments among members of our parish. Father Mike and I continue to meet with couples and individuals who desire to understand how to heal from a past marriage in order to be married in our catholic church. Those interested should reach out for more information. Have a great week.
