Augustine of Canterbury, Bishop, d. c. 605

St. Gregory the Great, pope during Augustine’s adult life, had a vision of re-evangelizing AngloSaxon England. To accomplish this, he selected about thirty of the monks from his monastery in Rome, including their prior, Augustine. This group set out for England in 596.

When the group reached the English Channel, they received warnings that the Anglo-Saxons were a wild and fierce people and the monks would be in great danger if they crossed over the Channel to England. The monks asked Augustine to seek reassurance from the pope, so Augustine returned to Rome where St. Gregory encouraged him and his monks to continue with their mission, promising them that he was certain that the English were ready for conversion. FOR DEEPER REFLECTION:

Question for Children: God fills us with love. How, this week, will you show your family - your mom, dad, brothers, sisters, grandparents, cousins - that you love them as God loves them?

Question for Youth: When Jesus left the world, He sent the Holy Spirit to be with us. Have you ever given something important to someone else as a sign of your love for them? Have you ever experienced the Holy Spirit as a similar gift to you?

Question for Adults: Today we celebrate the relationship of love among the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. In what similar community of love do you live?

Worship & Music

The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity

The mystery of the Holy Trinity, one God in three persons, is something we celebrate and are familiar with. We begin all things in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Mass, in particular, begins and ends with the sign of the cross. We baptize using the Trinitarian formula, and bless ourselves thusly every time we enter a sacred space. As such, the fact that we dedicate a Sunday to the Trinity is no mystery to the faithful. But WHY we do it, and WHEN we do it has some significance.

In the early church, there was no special feast day dedicated to the trinity. However, as the belief in the triune God is a core tenet of Catholic faith, there were many devotions to the Trinity, and during the 11th century, it was petitioned to have a special feast. This was rejected by Pope Alexander II, with his rationale that the daily glorification of the Trinity through the Trinitarian blessings and doxological recitations (the “through him and with him in the unity of the holy spirit” that concludes the liturgy of the eucharist, and the gloria patri included at the end of psalms and other prayers) was sufficient.

The Son is not the Father, the Father is not the Spirit, the Spirit is not the Father, etc…but all are God!

Later, in the 14th century, Pope John XXII did indeed order the feast to be celebrated on the Sunday after Pentecost, and in the modern era after the second Vatican Council, has the rank of a Solemnity. This date was chosen as it was the Sunday following the fulfillment of the promise Christ made to his disciples. The Father sent the Son, and through the intercession of the Son, thus followed the Spirit. As the Trinity was so recognized by Christ’s own disciples, so too would that now be celebrated by all the faithful.

Please also mark your calendars for next Sunday, June 22, The Solemnity of Corpus Christi. Following the 12noon Mass there will be exposition and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, ending with Benediction at 3pm.

“Easter Duty”

The Catholic Church requires of us as baptized Catholics to observe the following:

The obligation, the privilege really, of receiving the Eucharist at least once a year --- often called “Easter duty” for those in the state of grace should still be fulfilled during the period from the First Sunday of Lent, March 9, 2025 to Trinity Sunday, June 15, 2025. However, the Church’s law does permit this precept to be fulfilled at another time during the year when there is a just cause.

Liturgy of the Word Dismissal

This is the practice of having children, ages 4-12, leave the Sunday assembly during the Liturgy of the Word (readings) and gather in the chapel to engage in the Liturgy of the Word at a level more appropriate to the children’s understanding.

High School Graduates

As a parish community we recognize the need to support graduates in staying connected to the Catholic Church after they graduate.

With more than 80% of high school students leaving their faith in college, we need a way to connect graduates to the next step in their faith journey.

Our parish has partnered with Newman Connection. Newman Connection connects graduating high school students to the Catholic campus ministry of their chosen college (whether it is a Catholic college or not). Connect directly with Newman Ministries HERE

My Dear Parishioners:

Quo vadis...

Today we celebrate The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. As difficult as it is to grasp the mystery of God’s triune majesty, it is even more difficult to grasp that God loves us enough to share divine life and glory with us. Living the paschal mystery means that we are faithful witnesses to the God within. Sometimes rather than witnessing through doing good works, we need to witness simply by appreciating ourselves and others for the wonderful gift of God’s presence that we are. The readings this week challenge us to become more deeply aware of God’s presence in creation, in Jesus, and in ourselves. Then allow that awareness to overflow in thanksgiving and praise that gives God glory.

er retention of information following the two week module. We need to strengthen the commitment of all to participate in Sunday Mass Regularly as part of this summer program. We will continue to strengthen and develop the intergenerational components to assist our parish families. Our efforts can only be successful when we are supporting parents and families to teach the faith in word and deed, especially by coming to mass each and every Sunday.

This is the time of year when we witness the progress of many as they grow in knowledge through education and life experience. Graduations are a time for us to give thanks for the freedom to learn and the sacrifices of many so that access to education is possible.. Congratulations to all of our parishioners who graduated this year!

Last weekend the Liturgical Season of Easter concluded with the Solemnity of Pentecost. The double alleluias were added to the dismissal of the mass to remind us that the outpouring of the Holy Spirit is the gift of God and the fulfillment of Jesus promise to be with us until the end of time. We now begin the Liturgical Season of Ordinary Time. I am grateful to all those who have assisted us in preparing the Liturgical Rites throughout the Easter Season. If you are interested in learning more about what it takes to prepare these rites for our parish community contact Andrew Macirowski.

Next weekend we observe the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, the Body and Blood of Christ. We will have a Eucharistic Procession in the church at the conclusion of the 12 noon mass. The Most Blessed Sacrament will remain at the altar until 3pm at which time Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament will be imparted. Take time to come and be in the presence of the Eucharistic Lord.

Preparations are being made for our Summer Sessions of Religious Education. These programs are increasingly popular among our parish families and have demonstrated to me great-

Last weekend we provided an accounting and overview of our 2025 Easter Collection. Many thanks for your generous and deliberate stewardship of treasure. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff

NEW BAPTISMAL FONT!

Several years ago, we announced a gift toward replacing the current baptismal font which has been unusable due to multiple leaks. The process has taken much longer than anticipated and after consultation with the parish Patrimony Committee and the Finance Council we are pleased to announce that the new baptismal font is scheduled to be installed during the month of August 2025. Since the existing baptismal font was installed without the proper footings we will need to cut the floor open to pour the footings to ensure the stability of the font. Additionally, we will need to cut the floor open to install new piping for the font. We appreciate your cooperation during this time of construction and repair. Please be advised that during this period of transition we will be able to celebrate Baptisms in the chapel, should requests be made for this time. Thanks for your patience as we continue to work in making our sacred worship space more beautiful and dignified.

THANK YOU ! For all your efforts in supporting the Annual Catholic Appeal! Please continue to make your pledge payments so that our parish can receive the maximum rebate. If you haven't made a pledge yet please go to www.dioceseoftrenton.org/catholicappeal to send your gift electronically. Make sure to select St. Mary Catholic Church, Colts Neck in the Parish Affiliation box so we can receive credit for your gift. Thank you for your prayers and support
