Why should we sing at Mass? A very important question that has fortunately simple answers. We should sing at Mass because the Universal Church expects us to do so. One of the driving reasons behind the reforms of the Second Vatican Council was for “Full and active participation in the Mass”.
What does this mean? This means attentive listening to the word of God during the liturgy of the word. This means that when we say “Thanks Be To God”, we truly mean it. This means that when we respond to the Word of the Lord in the psalm, we sing its antiphon (refrain) with our whole voice and heart. We watch, listen, and respond in song to the priest during the prayers of the Communion Rite. The Mass is not a spectator sport. We MUST participate.
The singing of the Ordinary, (the parts of the Mass that do not change weekly: the Gloria, the Eucharistic Acclamations, etc) is of utmost importance and these parts are to always be sung at every Mass.
The singing of the Propers of the Mass (the parts that change: the psalms, the communion antiphon, etc) is a tradition as old as the organized Church itself, and it is one that we carry on today.
The singing of the hymns (a tradition borrowed from our Protestant brethren, who previously borrowed it from the Catholic tradition of singing hymns at the Liturgy of the Hours), although optional, is still important, as the hymns that are chosen for a particular day are meant to re-affirm the teachings of the readings from the day, or the nature of the liturgical season.
As we prepare to enter the autumn months, musical preparation for Christmas will begin. The choir and handbells are seeking new members and urge anyone with an interest to sign up and participate. Please see the information on our website under Sacred Music, where you can also sign up.

Jane Frances de Chantal, Wife, Mother and Religious, 1572-1641
Daughter of the president of the Burgundy parliament, Jane Frances was born in Dijon, France. At the age of twenty, she married Baron Christopher de Chantal. The couple had seven children, three of whom died in infancy.
Jane reestablished the custom of daily Mass in her castle residence and engaged in numerous charitable works. When her husband died in a hunting accident in 1601, Jane Frances sank into a depression. Thanks to our wonderful parish volunteers, the Martha Mary Guild is happy to announce that we will hold our Clothing Sale on September 7th & 8th 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, and September 9th 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. There will be no linens this year, but we will be accepting gently used men's, women's and children's clothing and accessories (hats, shoes, scarves and handbags) until September 1st. Sanctuary Lamp
Consider donating the sanctuary lamp that burns in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament in the Church or Chapel in honor of a living or deceased loved one. One intention is accepted per week (Sunday - Saturday) for the Lamp. The suggested donation is $25. Request online HERE.

Today we celebrate the Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time. The good news of the Church is that Christ trusts us to proclaim throughout the ages that his identity has been revealed by God. Jesus didn’t only choose great thinkers or saintly people to steer his Church on a right course and make his name known. He chose ordinary human beings who simply open themselves to the capacity to be great believers because they are first great hearers of the revelation. “Revelation” doesn’t mean that we sit around alone in silence waiting for God to speak to us. It means that we open our eyes to see and our ears to hear and our hearts to experience Jesus’ presence and power in the dailyhappeningsaround us.Theinfant who utters the first word and delights parents, one who has Alzheimer’s who has a rare moment of recognition, the unexpected good deed that comes our way can all be revelations of Jesus’ identity and saving power. Participating in the Mission Co-op Program offered by the Society for the Propagation of the Faith is another visible way for us to experience the communion of churches in our Roman Catholic Church. Your generoussacrificialstewardshipenablesthesemission dioceses to continue to provide for the needs of their members and offer basic services to increase the quality of life. Together we continue to advance the mission that Jesus Christ left for us His Church. We will continue to accept financial gifts in support of the sistersandtheirapostolate.

Work has begun as we install new organ speakers on the structural wooden beams throughout the nave of the church. This will better distribute the sound throughout the building and allow for the grouping of like sounds. Our upgraded pendant lights are being installed as well. This will provide better light, remote access, and preset scheduling with LED and blue tooth technology. This lighting project is being funded with seed money from the Diocese of Trenton Faith to Move Mountains Capital Campaign rebate funds. I have received a nice email from Father Gregory Sambi, OSB. He is now an ordained priest and all is well. He is now preparing to begin his assignment in Rome where learning the Italian Language is part of the plan. He is grateful to all of you for your generous welcome to him. Father Gene and I recently shared lunch here in 07722. He was on his way to preach a mission appeal in a nearby parish. Heisadjustingwellto hisnewresponsibilitiesserving as Army Chaplain for the enlisted personnel and their families at Fort Hood Texas. He asked me to extend hisgreetingstoallofyou.
