Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Saint Bartholomew
Andrew J. Macirowski - Pastoral Coordinator for Worship & Music / Principal OrganistWorship@stmaryscoltsneck.org
Music@stmaryscoltsneck.org
Saint Bartholomew, one of the Twelve Apostles, is listed in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, and in the Acts of the Apostles. His name means "son of Tholomai" in Aramaic, and is therefore likely a surname. The Gospel of John calls him by his given name of Nathaniel. St. John also tells us that St. Bartholomew was from Cana in Galilee, and that he was evangelized by St. Philip. The Lord Jesus paid him a great compliment: “Here is a true Israelite. There is no duplicity in him” (John 1:47b). When Nathanael asked how Jesus knew him, Jesus said, “I saw you under the fig tree” (John 1:48b). Whatever amazing revelation this involved, it brought Nathanael to exclaim, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel” (John 1:49b). But Jesus countered with, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this” (John 1:50b).
According to the Roman Martyrology, he spread the Gospel to Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Persia and Armenia, and was martyred by King Astyages of Armenia, traditionally in Abanopolis on the Caspian sea. The church historian Eusebius writes that in the third century St. Pantaenus found Christians in India and that they had a copy of St Matthew's Gospel written in Hebrew which, they said had been brought to them by St. Bartholomew.
St. Bartholomew is traditionally pictured in art with knives representing the instruments of his martyrdom - being flayed alive. His relics are believed to be preserved in the church of St. Bartholomew-on-the-Tiber, in Rome. His feast day is August 24th and he is the patron of skin disease and occupations which involve knives, such as tanning and bookbinding.

Stephen, called Vaik at birth, was the son of Geza, the leader of the Magyars, a fierce tribe which had settled into the land that is now Hungary. Geza deemed it politically expedient to become Christian, therefore, he, his family, and his nobles were baptized in 985. Vaik, a boy of ten who had not yet learned pagan ways, took the name Stephen. While Geza and the nobles were Christian largely in name only, Stephen became a practicing Christian. In 997, Stephen succeeded his father as leader of the Magyars. One of his first undertakings was to put down rebellions among rival tribal leaders so that he could assume the leadership of all Hungary. Having overcome the warring tribes of the region, Stephen then sent- Read More HERE.

Today we celebrate the Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The Canaanite woman’s single mindedness on behalf of her daughter is rewarded with her being healed. This gospel challenges us to be just as single minded about placing our request before God, and also just as single minded about our own inclusive ministry to others. It’s interesting that the Canaanite woman’s cry to Jesus was that he “have pity on me” (not on her daughter, although that is surely implied in the request). This gives us an insight into our inclusivity and ministry: we must be so “at one” with others that their plight is our own plight. Ministry is more than doing for another; it implies an empathy with another that discloses the unity we share as members of the body of Christ. One dimension of living the paschal mystery is that we work to increase our unity with one another, which in turn draws us to reach out to others in mercy and compassion, no matter who they are.
This weekend we welcome Sister Speranza and Sister Sol who are visiting our parish to share with us the important work of the her community. This Mission Co-op is part of our Catholic Church’s global outreach. It is coordinated and overseen by the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. There will be a second collection to support the Catholic Church’s missionary work in Father’s home diocese. Thank you for your continued generous support of the missions both foreign and domestic.
Our Summer Religious Education Program second module has concluded. I have received many positive comments from parents and the participants as well. We are
very blessed to have a dedicated teaching/ catechetical staff, many of whom continue with us each year. Our facilities are also tremendous for this kind of program. We will continue to evaluate this program and strive to offer the very best faith formation opportunities for ourparishioner families.
The summer months are quickly passing. Make sure to take some time and enjoy the summer sun. Make a visit to the beach. Take a walk on the sand or the boardwalk. Enjoy the beauty of His creation that is all around us. We have many beautiful parks throughout Monmouth County for public enjoyment. As the days become shorter the glimpse of autumn becomes more apparent.
The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, patroness of our Diocese of Trenton was a nice liturgical celebration. The presence of the RE Children were an added plus. It was also the first time when our parish and Saint Catharine Parish coordinated mass times to offer more opportunities for participation. Thank you for your support and cooperation.
The Labor Day Civic Observance will soon be here. That weekend we will observe an abbreviated weekend mass schedule: Saturday 5:00pm; Sunday 10:00am. Our summer mass schedule concludes Labor Day Weekend. The Saturday 4:00pm anticipated mass will return Saturday, 9 September 2023. Please make a note in your schedules now. Have a great week. Let us pray for one another. Happy Sunday. Peace.

Years ago, I offered this in-depth study of the Enneagram. People still refer to that experience as one of their most life-changing events. I am excited to offer it again. The Enneagram, as I know it and teach it, leads to understanding and compassion for yourself and others as you live out the call of Jesus to love one another as God loves you. Again this year we will focus on how every type gets along with every other type. Sounds like fun!
