Who Needs Sleep?

YOU and your baby.

We caught up with Kathryn Stimpson – The Family Sleep Coach based in Norfolk and asked her a few questions….

How did you get into being a Sleep Coach?

This question always makes me smile. In a nutshell, it’s kind of spooky because I’ve taken two of my hardest times of my life and turned them into my career without planning to.

I suffered with insomnia about 15 years ago which was horrific, I thought this experience meant I could cope with the sleepless nights as a mum, I was very wrong. Sleep deprivation as a parent broke me, physically and mentally. To cut a long painful story short, we hired a Sleep Consultant and this completely transformed our family life.

I instantly decided I wanted to help other families in the same way, so I went off to London to train in Advanced Gentle Sleep Coaching and now I work with families all across the U.K, helping them to enjoy better sleep.

With seemingly loads of ‘sleep solutions’ for our babies, how would you best describe the strategies you recommend to local parents?

I have a truthbomb, there is no magic solution.

But that doesn’t mean to say you can’t improve it or lay the foundations for good sleep from birth. My vision for my clients is to create the best opportunity and environment for their children to fall (and stay asleep) in. For me, I work holistically and see my strategies like a toolkit, that wetalk through so parents choose which to use.

What are your 3 top tips for an overtired baby?

1. Get to know your baby’s tiredness signs 2. Try to help your baby to nap when they are tired not overtired 3. An earlier bedtime is good if your baby is overtired What services do you offer parents?

Yoga for Pregnancy

by Babyfit Here are my favourite pregnancy yoga positions: 1. CAT (MARJARYASANA) During pregnancy the lower back muscles are challenged with the extra anterior weight. This pose helps release the lower back and with good breathing techniques helps connect and engage the core muscles.

2) CHAIR (UTKATASANA) This pose builds strength in the legs helping them to support the growing pregnancy, as well as stabilising the pelvis.

3) BUTTERFLY (BADDHAKONASANA) This pose strengthens the pelvic region and lower back, releases tension in the inner thighs and helps open the hips in preparation for birth.

4) KNEELING LUNGE (ANJANEYASANA) This pose is great for lengthening, releasing and de-stressing a postural muscle called the Psoas.

This also helps to create more space for baby in both pregnancy and birth.

There are so many benefits to exercising in pregnancy. Pregnancy yoga is one of my favourites, as not only is it relaxing and calming, it also focuses on strengthening core muscles to aid in birth and recovery.

Alongside strength and relaxation, pregnancy yoga allows you to practice breathing techniques to help balance your mind and body, which is great throughout pregnancy when life can sometimes feel a little more stressful.

Before trying pregnancy yoga it’s a good ideal to check with your midwife just to be sure that there are no reasons to why you shouldn’t do it.

Reasons can include being at a higher risk of preterm birth.

How to Build Your Baby’s Brain

The Benefits of Children’s Yoga

by Superzen Kids Yoga Hurray! SuperZen Kids Yoga has totally arrived in Norfolk and we can’t wait to start bringing all the juicy benefits of yoga to children across the county.

But what is kids yoga all about? If you enjoy a regular yoga practice yourself you’re probably thinking… “Yeah, children’s yoga sounds great, but if you think my little balls of energy are going to get all zen and do quiet poses on a mat for 40 minutes you’re having a laugh.”

Don’t worry lovely parents, because actually we will be having a laugh… in yoga class. Children’s yoga is an imaginative mix of games, play, songs and creativity. We’ll be using our imagination to go on a yoga inspired safari to Africa, or take a trip with dolphins under the deep blue sea. Perhaps we’ll pretend we’re dinosaurs in space, or a super hero on a mission to bring peace to the galaxy, who knows? And of course there’s plenty of mindful moments built in as well, but in a way that makes quiet time interactive and fun for kids.

Who Doesn’t Love A Massage!?

Over the Spring I was lucky enough to meet, and have a massage from Jess Marczewski at The Norfolk Massage Specialist. I found her through picking up one of her flyers, whilst out flyering for our April show, and I felt drawn to get in touch with her, as I do LOVE a massage.

Jess is a mobile massage specialist (and when I say specialist, she REALLY knows her stuff), so she came to my house, which was SO convenient.

I have been to MANY spas and beauticians and love feeling pampered and treated, however as our family grows (we now have 2 children and a doggy) my ‘me’ time is rapidly evaporating, so to not have to drive anywhere means I am able to ‘pop’ a massage in between emails, teatime, potty training – everything which us parents do. I have some personal favourite spas and ‘massage huts’ in Norfolk, and love spending a morning or afternoon somewhere, but Jess makes having a massage so easy (especially when I often get tension headaches). To be able to have a massage at home means I am able to keep tensions at bay to enable me to be calmer, relaxed and able to cope with parenthood with a tiny bit more energy than before.

Jess radiates happiness and instantly puts you at ease; she sets up wherever you feel most relaxed and explains what she’s going to do. She’s great at working out where you hold your stress and concentrates on key areas. After your massage she then describes what you can do to help improve any symptoms and she even emailed me over some stretches and exercises.

Jess understands that many of us can’t always take time off during the day, so she offers evening appointments as well, and travels all around Norfolk.

If you’re looking for a treat, or regular massages at your home then Jess is your gal.

Lots of cheap baby grows – both long and short sleeve – the cheaper the better as these will most likely end up in the bin due to ‘pooplosions’ / ‘poo-nami’ (words you will become used to VERY quickly)

TONNES of wipes – don’t underestimate how many you’ll need – (or again why not give cloth wipes a go)

•

Plenty of nappies – cloth ones are also a great alternative and increasingly popular

•

Little mitts as their hands are all over the place in the first few weeks so these will stop them from constantly scratching themselves – you can buy these in packs for pennies.

You can buy cheap, washable changing mats which are brilliant for throwing on the bed to do a quick change in the night – rather than going to another room. Also handy for trips

For you: maternity pads.

• A baby bath is super for the first few months and saves on water • A little jug for the bath to pour water over the back of their heads – later on you can use it as a game Nappy rash cream – our favourite is the Harry and Rose Nappy Spray

• Some baby friendly oil or moisturiser so you can give them a little massage after the bath – if you choose to do a baby massage course you will get this at your first session •

Nappy bags to pop your nappies/cotton wool in to help keep the room smelling nice

A couple of cute newborn/tiny baby outfits for meeting the family/seeing all your visitors – but no need to go overboard as you’ll all be in your jammies for a while

BATHING/HYGIENE

• A few bottles just in case you need to express to alleviate some of the pain from breastfeeding in the first few weeks (it can really can be tough at the start) • An electric breast pump – again just in case, you can always take it back if you don’t use it (the manual ones take SO much longer) Haakaa breast pumps are super

PLEASE DO NOT COVER YOUR PRAM WITH A BLANKET TO KEEP THE SUNLIGHT OUT. This rapidly increases the temperature in the pram & can seriously harm your baby.

Changing bag with a changing mat included – some places you go to change your baby when you’re out can be a little grim

Postnatal Depression – Your First Steps

Becoming a mum is hard, even if it’s not your first baby. Sleep deprivation, everyday stresses, managing multiple children – it can all accumulate and trigger lots of emotions.

Often these emotions can pass, but if you find you’re suffering low moods, anxiety, detachment, feeling isolated – and generally not yourself for more than a few weeks then it’s time to start putting your own mental health first. This can seem daunting and finding the time to do so can be a real challenge, but the ever-old saying ‘happy mum – happy baby’ really does ring true.

The first point of call is your GP (or midwife if you are still pregnant), or possibly your health visitor if you’re still in touch with them.

The following can also really help and put you on the right path to seek help and support: •

Get Me Out The Four Walls (GMOTFW) are a local charity which mums can self refer to through their referrals service which endeavours to provide support to mums struggling with confidence and/or anxiety. You can self refer by emailing referrals@getmeout.org.uk and someone will be in touch as soon as possible.

Find them on Facebook or www.getmeout.org.uk We got in touch with the ladies at GMOTFW to provide is with a short statement: ‘The early days of parenthood is not always the perfect picture which you see in magazines and on TV. It can often be a very isolating, lonely time, which can lead to the onset of maternal mental illnesses such as postnatal depression and postnatal anxiety. Early intervention is vital to ensure both parents and baby continue to establish a loving bond and keep themselves well, so we’d always advise speaking with a medical professional if they’re not feeling quite right. GMOTFW can support parents through social meets with some adult conversation and a hot cuppa, and there is a wealth of local charities and organisations there to help too. You are not alone.’

MEN’S MENTAL HEALTH Postnatal depression in fathers is also an extremely important topic. Whether it’s sleep deprivation, the guilt of leaving their partners at home whilst they go to work, money managing, new responsibilities - life as a father can also really take its toll. According to NCT.org 1 in 10 fathers-to-be become depressed during their partner’s pregnancy and in general men are much more vulnerable to depression in the first year of their baby’s life. Awareness of men’s mental health is on the rise, however in comparison to a mother’s mental health there is still a lot which can be done.

If you feel your partner may be suffering then you can also get in touch with Get Me Out The Four Walls. There is also the following organisations which may help, but, as ever the first port of call could be their GP.

Following the successful introduction of ‘Back to Sleep’ advice in the 1990’s, there has been an increase in incidences of head flattening in babies.

The most common of the flat head syndromes being plagiocephaly. Head flattening is normally a result of prolonged external pressure on a baby’s soft skull, which can even start as early as in utero.

The NHS website reports that head flattening is common and affects 1 in 5 babies. With the awareness that this can happen, new parents can follow simple steps to try and prevent or minimise head flattening.

Our tips to reduce the risk of head flattening: 1. Change your baby’s position regularly, avoiding long periods of time in equipment such as car seats, reclined chairs and prams where the back of the head is in contact with a firm surface.

2. Wear your baby. Slings and carriers are a great way of changing the external pressure on a baby’s head.

3. Introduce tummy time from birth and give daily opportunities for your baby to be off the back of their head.

4. Mix it up. By changing your baby’s environment and the way you approach daily cares you will naturally be encouraging your baby to change their head position.

For example, alternate sides when feeding, changing and holding your baby. Move the position of your baby in their cot/crib so that mobiles, lights or their favourite toys (in young babies most likely mummy) are not always encouraging a head turned to the same side.

5. If concerned seek early support.

Early intervention i.e. before 6 months, whilst a baby’s head is growing rapidly and remains soft will normally result in a better outcome.

Please note that most head flattening is due to pressure, however in rare cases it can be due to a condition that affects the way a baby’s skull grows. We would always suggest that before seeking treatment you consult your Health Visitor or GP who will consider a more structural cause or refer you to a specialist physiotherapist.

Fear and stress make the body produce the‘fear or flight’ hormone, adrenaline.

This directly affects the production of oxytocin, a birth hormone essential to the progress of labour. Clearly managing stress and anxiety can make a big difference to how labour progresses.

Hypnobirthing is a preparation for pregnancy birth and motherhood that uses breathing, visualisation, self-hypnosis and relaxation to help manage pain, stress and anxiety in labour.

Effectively it teaches “fear release techniques”. They help increase calm and confidence, allowing trust in the body’s innate ability to give birth more comfortably. Studies show that women who use Hypnobirthing have less need for pain relief and feel more control over the birth process. By eliminating negative thought patterns about the birth it also helps make pregnancy more enjoyable.

Birth partners can often feel at a loss about how to help. With Hypnobirthing they play an active and valuable supporting role allowing to develop a closer bond with you and the baby.

Baby benefits too - stress hormones pass through the placenta to the baby, reducing them means your baby is likely to be more calm and settled.

To Start School… Or Not To Start ‘School’

Lucy, from The Life Schoolers, writes for each issue of our magazine about life as a family who Home Educates their 2 young children, Archie (5) and Rocco (3) on a farm in rural (gorgeous) North Norfolk. We love Lucy’s articles and hope they help parents who may be thinking about other schooling options.

The time of year has arrived where parents start thinking about September.

Conversations around starting school are commonplace and many young children are preparing by meeting their new teacher and filling in ‘all about me’ booklets etc.

Some people (children included) are totally unfazed, but others find it exceptionally overwhelming.

Two years ago, I was the parent whose child didn’t turn 4 until the end of August, so was sending a nervous 3 year old into school for his settling in sessions. I did this because it was the done thing, but instantly regretted it in the September when my just turned 4 year old was displaying signs of anxiety and was desperately unhappy.

It took 6 months of trying, persuading, negotiating and crying before we met with some families who home educated and our perspective was completely changed. We didn’t hesitate to pull Archie out of school after that and we haven’t looked back or doubted our decision one bit. Why am I writing this? Not to panic

you or overwhelm you. Some children (even the little ones) start school and love it. But I want to encourage those of you who may be walking in the same shoes that I was, that you have other options.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO SEND YOUR CHILDREN TO SCHOOL. They MUST be ‘in education’ from the term after their fifth birthday, but you don’t have to follow a curriculum or have your child’s work assessed by anyone. It’s the perfect opportunity to tailor your child’s education to their needs and interests, whilst having lots of fun with friends (yes socializing) and learning at their own pace.

Track a Tree Project with The Life Schoolers

TO START, YOU WILL NEED TO:  Go for a walk and pick a tree to track through the year.  Identify the tree (this is the perfect time of year for identifying trees).  Start a folder or some other way of documenting changes.

If you have ever looked at our Instagram page, you will see that we LOVE spending time in nature and learning from all that the natural world has to offer.

Recently we have started something that sparked as a little idea a while back. I thought I would share it here, as I have had lots of messages from people who are wanting to join in and do the same (and I knew there would be lots of readers of this magazine who may wish to too).

We have started our first ever tree tracking project.

We have picked a tree and we’re going to be monitoring and observing it for an entire year, to watch the seasonal changes it goes through and to be inspired by it for artwork, poetry and creative writing etc.

It’s a lovely project for the whole family to be involved with.

Top tips for a Rainy Day with Beebops The Great British summer can throw us some pretty wet days which can turn our little people slightly stir crazy at times. Here are some ideas on how to keep them amused when going outside just isn’t an option.

GLITTER WANDS All you need is an old bubble wand bottle, glitter and some glue Simply fill the tube with water, add some glitter then glue the lid on. A really simple idea, which is great for visual stimulation in young babies.

PASTA STRINGING All you need is penne pasta, some string and pots/pans A great time consumer for slightler older children.

Get some dried penne pasta and string and let them thread the pasta onto the string. This is great for fine motor skills and hand and eye coordination. Add some pots and spoons to the pasta (or you could use rice) to extend the fun and work on gross motor skills with stiring, tipping and pouring.

Bubbles are always a massive hit in our classes and great for visual tracking and hand eye coordination. You can pick up bubble mixture very affordably and it’s great to play with.

We love creating our own toys and sensory items at Beebops Sensory Music and Dance. Learning through play is a key priority for us and children of all ages really do love it.

We love everything The Developmental Dynamics Lab stands for, so it was a pleasure to chat to Laura Marshall from DDLab to hear a little bit more about what they get up to…

What ages do you research?

What does The Developmental Dynamics Laboratory do?

We research how children think, remember and pay attention to things and how these abilities change in early development.

What does an average day consist of?

No two days are the same here in the labs, but there are always children in the waiting area playing with ‘Bramble’ our bear mascot and our new super huge toy leopard. There could be multiple families in at one time and the researchers make the studies really fun for the kids whilst collecting the research data. Kids love the part where they receive their child scientist t-shirt and get to choose a toy from our gift box.

Mostly 0 to 5 years of age, but we do keep details of older kids who may get the opportunity to take part in other research studies within the School of Psychology.

What research programmes are you currently working on?

‘The Dynamics of Visual Attention and Word Learning’ headed up by Professor Larissa Samuelson and ‘Probing the Neural Basis of Visual Working Memory in Early Development – The Brain study’ headed up by Professor John Spencer. Our website explains more about the two projects.

Norfolk Mums’ Guide to the County’s Best Kept Secrets Bringing up children in Norfolk is an incredible experience as there are an abundance of places to explore and enjoy with the whole family.

I have pulled together a few of Norfolk Mums’ favourite secret spots to visit below.

PICNIC PLACES In pride of place in Norwich, the city’s cathedral isn’t exactly a secret, however even though it’s gardens are usually overlooked due to the stunning building that stands within them, they provide a beautiful and relaxed environment for a picnic away from the hussle and bussle of city life.

Norfolk has number of fantastic parks dotted about the county - Eaton, Earlham, and Wensum to name a few - however one that stands out for me is Catton Park (which is closeby to where I live) and provides a vast grassland and woodland to explore and let the children run wild.

The top of Mousehold Heath is another personal favourite of mine, where you can sit and take in the breathtaking views of Norwich while either enjoying a picnic or sampling something off the extensive menu at the nearby cafe.

Norfolk Mum Vicki Lowes also says that her favourite hidden gem is a heath, but one situated in our neighbouring county - Knettishall Heath which also has a vast nature reserve managed by the Suffolk Wildlife Trust.

WOODLAND WALKS Mousehold Heath is also known for its wonderful woodland walks, and is popular with both families and dog walkers alike. It can be enjoyed in the summer months, where you can stop at one of its green spaces for a bite to eat, or in the winter months in your welly boots while collecting twigs and pine cones to make Christmas wreaths.

Another great walking track is Marriotts Way, which is a 26 mile footpath, bridleway and cycle route which follows the routes of two disused railway lines, running between the historic market town of Aylsham and the medieval city of Norwich. The dirt track lined with wildlife filled woodland makes for a peaceful yet interesting walk, or an exciting cycle ride for the more adventurous.

ANIMAL ATTRACTIONS Unlike some of the larger zoos and animal parks in Norfolk, Amazona Zoo in Cromer is a smaller, more intimate attraction. Norfolk Mum Emma Peck says that “We go a couple times a month.

My little boy loves seeing all the animals, and with the park and soft play he always wants to go.”

Fritton Owl Sanctuary is a favourite with my family as the children love seeing and holding the birds, my husband and I love browsing the flea market antiques, and we all enjoy an ice cream/slice of cake in the quaint cafe area at the end of the day.

BEAUTIFUL BUILDINGS Norfolk Mum Charlotte Ashe recommends Creake Abbey near Fakenham as “it’s beautiful, with lovely walks around the ruins, gorgeous little independent shops and a wonderful cafe and deli - plus lots of outside space for the children to play while you eat.” She adds; “we grabbed some incredible scotch eggs and ate them sitting on the grass next to the pond. It was bliss.” - from this I definitely want to visit here with the family one Summer weekend.
