5 things you didn’t know about Gresham’s Nursery & Pre-Prep School You may know Gresham’s as an independent school in Holt for children aged 7 to 18. But did you know our education actually starts at age two in our Nursery? We’re guessing there could be a few more things you don’t know about Gresham’s, including...

We learn outside With the breath-taking North Norfolk coast just a stone’s throw away, and surrounded by an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, our Pre-Prep school is perfectly situated to offer excellent outdoor learning activities, whatever the weather.

We find the great outdoors offers a stimulating environment where little imaginations can run free and creativity can be enhanced. From building grand hotels for minibeasts and homes for teddy bears, to creating leaf presses, there are many ways we can use the outdoors to further enhance children’s learning and enjoyment.

We don’t combine year groups in classes Children at Gresham’s are taught in small class sizes that are specifically tailored to their year group. Without mixing ages, we can ensure all teaching is individualised and really focused on the appropriate curriculum. Each class is kept small, but year groups are larger which supports peer learning and social interaction opportunities, crucial for early year’s development.

We love yoga Practising yoga can significantly develop a child’s gross motor skills through body awareness and increased strength, balance and coordination. Yoga is also a great form of mindfulness, giving children much needed time to pause away from screens and distraction.

We find it really helps to support children’s wellbeing, particularly as a method for coping with stress and anxiety. Children at Gresham’s Nursery and Pre-Prep take part in weekly yoga sessions and particularly enjoy combining their movements with songs and story-telling (don’t tell, but the teachers quite enjoy it too).

We provide wrap around care as standard We know that the traditional school day doesn’t always fit in with a parent’s busy life, in fact we often hear that finding good, reliable childcare is one of the biggest challenges for parents.

Therefore, at no additional cost, we provide wrap around care for children from 8:00am until 5:30pm (5:00pm on a Wednesday). Of course, we ensure this time is fun and enjoyable for children with range of games and activities in a relaxed and happy atmosphere. In the morning we serve breakfast to prepare children for the busy day ahead, and in the evening we provide tea. Our children love it, and our parents find it very useful too.

We encourage each child to be totally, utterly themselves At Gresham’s we provide specialist teaching to give every child the opportunity to try a variety of activities and find other areas of achievement aside from purely academic.

This starts at the Pre-Prep School, where we have specialist teachers who help children to discover new talents. Our offer includes drama and dance for the budding Olivia Colman, sport for the future Tom or Ben Youngs and music for the next Benjamin Britten (just a few of our outstanding former pupils).

You may feel mind boggled by the sheer amount of information out there for you and your newborn. THIS IS NORMAL. No one size fits all.

We are all very unique and we have been taught different values and been raised by OUR parents with different ideas and beliefs to others. So when we find ourselves in a situation where we’re tired, when emotions of having a newborn are running high and when we feel a little hazy and confused, it can be really hard to find your path and to feel like you’re doing the right thing for you and your baby.

Take a step back, listen to your feelings and trust in yourself to make the right decision for you, your family and your baby. Mothers wellbeing is JUST as important and there is so much to say for a happy mummy = a happy baby. Putting trust in yourself can be a really hard thing to do, but remember that you would have done your research and subconsciously you may have gathered information from leaflets, midwives, health professionals, ante-natal classes, friends and family. And you know what – there is no harm in asking too. Making informed, educational decisions is your right as a parent and whatever those decisions are, if you are making them for the good of your family as a whole – then that is all your baby can ask for in a mummy.

You’ve got this. Trust yourself, trust your instincts and block out any negative noise which doesn’t fit with YOUR life compass.

How to tell the difference between accurate, trustworthy parenting advice... and everything else

by BuckleUp Parenthood Searching random Google results for pregnancy or baby advice is often akin to playing a computer game. You’re flying at a high speed through unfamiliar space and have to dodge missiles and angry gremlins, whilst protecting some sort of precious jewel (it’s a long time since I’ve played a computer game).

However this time, the precious jewel is your new baby and you’re dodging shedloads of inaccurate, usually biased information along with adverts that are often cleverly designed to scare you into purchasing a ‘must-have’ product or service.

In the UK, a 2017 report by OFCOM found that 24% of pregnant women were using the internet as their primary source of health information.

A similar study in Ireland found that 70% of women were using the internet to find answers to their questions about pregnancy, with 67% using social media sites specifically for this purpose.

The problem is, Tracy from your local babes with babies Facebook group probably isn’t a qualified health expert... but she still has no issues dispensing advice.

Expectant parents simply cannot become an expert in all the expert fields, including being an expert in deciding whether the ‘expert’ advice is even that ‘expert’ by conducting an expert evaluation on the expert research and all the expert findings cited in that expert article.

Know what I mean? That’s a lot for one person, especially when you just wanted to know whether a snot sucker is safe to use on a 4-week old baby.

The thing is, we live in an age of ‘infobesity’.

And this is never more obvious than when we are transitioning into parenthood. Advice and information is thrown at you whether you want

it or not. And when you do want it, you’re not really sure if you can trust it, particularly if it is on the internet.

Let’s help you cut through the confusion.

Here are some tips for making sure you are properly informed online:

1.

Check who is hosting the page. Is it a wellknown, well-trusted institution like the NHS or a University? These are more likely to be providing accurate information than a blogger.

2.

Check how old the information is. Is there a date on that article? Research is constantly reshaping the advice that’s out there. Always seek to find the most up-to-date content.

3.

Look into the author of the content. What are their qualifications and credentials? Particularly on social media, emotive anecdotes can draw you in, but these do not count as evidence.

4.

Consider whether they trying to sell you something: Suspect that the advice you are reading is sales driven? It’s always sensible to be more cautious if so. There is much more chance of bias in reporting the findings of studies.

5.

Look around a number of trusted websites.

This should allow you to see the general trend in the information and answers you may be looking for. It’s more likely to be accurate if a number of trusted sources are saying the same thing.

If in doubt, seek out local sources of expert information. A place where you can access the pre-filtered lowdown on exactly what you need to know. Guardianship... are you prepared for a future without you in it?

Gosh... that’s a bit of a scary headline isn’t it?

But if I had used something like ‘Why having a Will is important for parents’ would you have read this far? Stick with me... Because the stark truth is, if you have or are expecting a child, I cannot stress enough the importance of writing your Will to nominate guardianship.

In the UK a surprisingly sad statistic shows that 1 in 20 children under the age of 16 will experience the death of one or both parents. Why then, do so many young parents feel they do not need a Will?

The problem is lack of information around the facts of what could (and does) happen.

My experience has shown that the general misconception is that ‘everything will sort itself out’, yet the facts are… without a Will they might not.

The most important consideration to make is who will be responsible for caring for your child if one or both parents are no longer alive, these are called guardians.

And the ONLY way to legally appoint guardians is by stating it in a Will.

Without a Will, your child/children’s guardians will be decided by the state. In extreme cases the courts could grant ‘parental responsibility’ to a local authority. A simple Will stating guardianship stops this and makes it clear to all your family and friends what your wishes are.

When deciding who you would want to be the guardian to your child or children should the worst happen, you need to consider a couple of things...

The top priority is that the guardians will look after the children as you would have raised them.

For this reason, consider which of your family members or friends share the same values as you. Also consider whether they are ‘able’ to care for your children. Grandparents may seem like the obvious choice, but you must consider how looking after young children will impact them, also remember, they will be guardians until the child/children are 18. Will they be able to cope as years go on?

I also recommend nominating a reserve guardian, in case your first choice is unable to act. Although you can (and should) change your Will as circumstances change, I often see the ‘change Will’ task slip down the to-do list and often never get done. Don’t forget, a Will can save your estate and beneficiaries LOTS of money and clear up any uncertainties that arise if you were to pass away unexpectedly.

My first child is due early June, so I am finally able to practice what I preach. I am passionate about the fact that young people need to be educated about the importance of needing a Will, Wills are NOT just for when you get older.

Seven super simple ways to start enjoying parenthood again

Let’s look at some of the practical things you can do to start enjoying being a parent again.

1. SHARE: You are not alone, but feeling isolated is

real. Sharing what you experienced in a day helps to process, and de-escalate your own emotions.

2. CONNECT: At least once every day, connect As a parent, have you ever felt like you’re not enough? I know I have.

Most parents feel like they’re not doing a great job at some point. It is a challenge to meet the demands of children, on top of the endless list of responsibilities in your career, household and other relationships.

For some this situation becomes deeply distressing when things in the family aren’t going well. What starts out as a ‘that could’ve gone better’ day, becomes a repetitive theme, and you stop enjoying the very role you coveted so much.

Parenting.

It’s not hard to pull yourself up when life is rosy. But what about when relationships at home are not going well? When your children aren’t willing to help out? When your work commitments are eating into your family time?

What happens when your child is unhappy and struggling with the world?

When school isn’t going well? When their behaviours become so challenging to manage that you’re always worried?

When life becomes so difficult that every day is about emotional survival, there are some key changes which can make a huge difference in your world.

Why not give them a try?

with a friend, or loved one on a deep level.

3. BE MINDFUL: This sounds like a mumbo-jumbo

tactic, but think about it. When did you last sit down and plan how you were going to tackle a family issue? We tend to parent automatically, without asking ourselves the right questions.

Questions like: What could I do tomorrow to make this better?

4. REFLECT: At the end of each day let yourself have two minutes to think about how today went, how you feel, and what you want tomorrow to be like.

Hey, if you’re really pushing the boat out, give yourself five.

5. CONGRATULATE: You know what? If all you

achieved today was getting dressed, then well done! It was still your best. World domination can and will have to wait.

6. USE SELF-CARE: Whenever parents hear the

words self-care, they conjure images of leisurely baths with bubbles and a glass of wine. Great!

But not always realistic for a busy mum. Instead, think of self-care as tiny moments to check in with yourself throughout the day. Asking, how do I feel, right now?

7. GET PROPER SUPPORT: Parenting is one of the

most important jobs you will ever have, but we are not always good at asking for support. If things are not going well, don’t continue to struggle.

Invest in the support you need to get you through your situation, give you the skills you need, and be able to enjoy your family, and life again.

The children have lots of individual attention, which enables us to tune in to each of their learning styles and support them appropriately.

Children have been learning their letter sounds to blend into words, building up their sight vocabulary and reading simple sentences with fluency and expression. Their reading journey is at a pace that suits the individual child.

The children read a new book to their teachers every day and reading quickly becomes something that they love and are very proud of.

After only one term in school the children are already writing with more independence and are all keen to ‘be brave and have a go’ tackling tasks with independence and resilience in their endeavours to be just like our growth mindset characters Roger Resilient and Independent Ivy. The children enjoy using the numicon to help them understand early place value and to assist with simple problem solving through our Maths Mastery approach.

We are hugely proud to be the first school in Norfolk to receive the prestigious FSA Recognised Forest School Provider award. Our 100 acres of ancient woodland, with its outdoor classroom and pizza oven, provides the perfect environment for children. Recent studies confirm that the more we allow learners to experience nature, the greater the benefits to both their academic performance and overall wellbeing. Children’s social, language and communication skills tend to flourish with increased independence, self-confidence and motivation as a direct result.

The children have all embraced learning French, practising simple greetings and singing songs, and enjoy weekly swimming sessions on site as well as PE lessons in our Sports Hall.

The children all take part in music sessions, enjoying singing, playing percussion instruments and learning the songs around our Growth Mindset characters. The Reception children also perform their very own nativity, which is always a delight to watch and demonstrates their developing confidence in front of an audience.

Family Recipe: Simply the Best Gingerbread

by Cookies Kitchen Gingerbread is for life not just for Christmas and this tasty, easy recipe is perfect all year round. What makes this recipe so great is how simple it is to make, it always works and it is forgiving when it is manhandled by over enthusiastic, young chefy fingers.

It has all the aspects that children love when cooking, they get their hands in the bowl rubbing the butter in; they get to crack eggs, mix and lick the spoon. We all know that little ones love to roll and re-roll a lot and this mixture copes so well with just that. After a short bake in the oven they can get wonderfully creative with the decorating. Grab some bags of dolly mixture and some edible icing pens from any supermarket. Enjoy!

Makes approximately 12 biscuits depending on your cutters INGREDIENTS: 350g plain flour 1tsp bicarbonate of soda 115g butter, diced and cooled 1tsp ground ginger 175g light brown sugar 1 egg 2 tbsp treacle Decorations of your choice (sweets, icing, sprinkles etc)

METHOD: Preheat the oven, 180°C/Gas mark 4. Line two baking trays with baking parchment.

Mix together the flour, bicarbonate of soda, ginger and butter in a large bowl and rub gently with cool fingertips to make a light breadcrumb like mixture. Next add the sugar, egg and treacle and mix with a wooden spoon until it sticks together as a ball of dough.

Lightly flour the work surface and gently knead the dough on the surface until it is nice and smooth and has no cracks.

Lightly sprinkle the work surface with flour again and roll the gingerbread to about 1cm thick. Cut out your gingerbread shapes and transfer them carefully to the baking trays.

Bake for about 10-15 minutes. Check them at 8 minutes or so to make sure they are not burning.

Once cooked, leave them on the baking sheet until they have cooled for about 5 minutes. Then move them with a spatula to a cooling rack. Once they are completely cool, you can decorate them.

Lastly it’s time to get creative with icing, sprinkles and decorations of your choice. Have fun!

Baby First Aid: Expert tips for dealing with choking quickly and calmly by save a baby's life Around 15,000 babies and children attend hospital every year after a choking incident.

Many of these are successfully dealt with by parents, but it’s still important to get them checked out as little ones don’t have the vocal skills to tell you how they are feeling.

Sadly, on average one baby dies a month from choking or a choking-related accident.

So… let me ask, would YOU know what to do if a baby or child you were caring for choked or stopped breathing?

Common items that little ones can choke on include: Round foods like grapes, cherry tomatoes and blackberries. These should always be cut into quarters. Also slippery hot dog sausages, sticky food like marshmallows, lumps of peanut butter, popcorn, ice cubes, nuts, mini eggs, and hard candy. Other items could include – nappy sacks, round batteries, coins, deflated balloons and small toys. Remember they will try and put everything in their mouths.

WHAT TO DO IF A BABY IS CHOKING! (under a year) 1. If it’s loud and red let them go ahead.

If the baby can get air in and out, they are coughing or gagging, then encourage them to cough and dislodge the item themselves.

But be prepared, so start removing straps if they are in a highchair.

3. Check the mouth and remove item if you can see and reach it easily. Do not go into the back of the throat for fear of pushing it further down. Be careful not to scratch the lining of baby’s mouth, as this could swell.

Babies learn about the world by putting everything in their mouths. EVERYTHING. It’s how they first begin learning how to chew. So what can we as carers do to keep risk to a minimum?

Here’s my top tips.

1. Remember, even young babies can reach and grab, so always keep small items well out of their reach.

2. Never let baby eat in a car seat or in a sling/back carrier.

3. A baby’s gag reflex is their safety mechanism to help prevent choking, so if they are gagging, give them time and they normally can sort it out themselves. But be prepared.

4. Always watch babies and children when they eat and never prop a bottle on a cushion and let them drink alone.

5. Teach older children to bang on the table if they get food stuck as choking is often silent.

4. Turn baby face down so their head is lower than the rest of their body. Gravity helps.

Support baby along your leg or arm and hold the jaw to protect their neck.

5. Give up to 5 firm back blows with the heel of your hand in between the shoulder blades, aiming to dislodge the item with each one.

If back blows dislodge item, seek medical advice by calling 111, local doctors or walk in centre. If after 5 blows the item is still lodged, check the mouth again and turn baby face up, but keep the head at the lowest point.

6. Place two fingers in the center of the chest and push sharply up to 5 times, aiming to press down a 1/3 of their chest with a slight pause in between each one. Stop if item is expelled.

7. Alternate between 5 back blows and 5 chest thrusts; checking the mouth after each 5.

Why you absolutely should switch to cloth nappies

by The Norfolk Nappy Company Aside from being gorgeous and really cute to look at there are some real benefits to using cloth nappies. When I meet with families for consultations they are usually aware that it’s a great way to replace single use plastic but there are a few other great benefits that are worth shouting about.

They’ve got great green credentials

There’s so much choice

On average babies will use 6,000 nappies by the time they are potty trained, (that’s enough to fill 78 bin bags) a massive amount to send to landfill compared to the 25-30 cloth nappies you would need for the same period.

Switching to cloth nappies is a really effective way to reduce your use of plastic and the rubbish you produce. The energy and water used to produce and transport disposable nappies to you far outweighs any amount of washing you could ever do. Furthermore, being able to reuse cloth nappies on future children or sell them on when you are finished with them only adds to their environmental benefits.

Cloth nappies are beautiful and come in so many prints. They can actually be a bit addictive (don’t tell my husband you only need 25).

And they also come in lots of different types.

Gone are the days of terry folding and pins – unless you prefer that – now you have a whole world of choices, shapes, sizes, fastenings and different designs to choose from.

They’re super gentle on sensitive bottoms The natural fibres and ultra-soft materials of cloth nappies make them much gentler than the paper, plastic and chemicals of disposable nappies – I know I would prefer to wear material than paper or plastic on my bum.

There’s always help available Not sure where to start, what to buy or having problems using cloth nappies? There is help available online with communities of cloth nappy users or with a cloth nappy consultation to get face-to-face advice. Cloth Nappy libraries also allow you to rent second hand cloth nappies if you want to try different brands before you buy.

So what do you think? Ready to give cloth nappies a try?

They’re surprisingly cost effective There are so many factors to consider with this one, however if you start from birth and compare like for like on the low cost or premium brands of each then cloth nappies are usually significantly lower in cost (saving over £1000 on the premium brands). Add in the ability to recoup some of that cost on the second hand market or reuse them on future children and it is really attractive.

Tips and Tricks For Home Education Parents

But what’s the difference?

Which is the ‘correct’ way to educate your child in a setting other than school?

Essentially, all of the above are variations of the same thing and to put it bluntly, they are ALL the ‘correct’ way.

One of the beautiful things about home education is that you can tailor the education that your child or children receives entirely to them. To their unique needs, abilities, interests and curiosities. There is no ‘one size fits all’ approach... you may even find that what suits one of your children does not work for another.

Our two boys are very different when it comes to their approach to learning. While one prefers a more unstructured approach that flows with his natural inquisitiveness, the other absolutely loves to sit and learn reading and writing in a more formal way. I do also notice how much both boys learn from everyday life, the places we go and the games we play too.

If you have decided to home educate or are considering your options, take your time in working out what works for you and your children. Try this! by Lucy From The Life Schoolers As well as learning through free play, nature and the children’s curiosity, I have realised how much we learn through playing table top games too. Maths skills, reading, writing, turn taking, cooperation, communication, patience, team work, problem solving, concentration, negotiation and not always coming first are a few of the many things children can learn through playing these games.

Here are a few of our favourites: MAGIC SPELLING - ORCHARD TOYS This is a really fun game in which the players race to spell words using the magic wand. As well as the magic wand that reveals letters, each word card is rubbed to magically reveal the correct spelling. The players are aiming to be the first to fill their spell books with yucky ingredients.

Orchard Toys do a range of fantastic games full of learning opportunities and here are a few more of our go to games from them: SHUT THE BOX This is an absolute classic and perfect for learning basic addition, problem solving and number bonds. Both my boys love this game and after a bit of practice are now able to solve problems in their head.

SUM SWAMP - LEARNING RESOURCES This is another fantastic maths game in which the players need to complete simple addition and subtraction problems in order to move around the board. The players also gain an understanding of odds and evens. It’s one of those games that our boys love playing without really realising they are learning at all.

This is just a small selection of some of our favourite games, but there are so many more with opportunities to practice and consolidate so many skills. Whether you’re a home schooler or not, why not give some of them a try?
