The Parent & Baby Magazine – Autumn / Winter 2019

Let's talk pregnancy, baby and toddler Thank you so much for picking up our little magazine, which has been created through lots of love, passion and desire to help and support parents in, and around, Norfolk. This summer has seen many changes for The Parent and Baby Show. I am so proud to announce that the business has taken on another lover of events and marketing – Kerry Brind! Between Kerry and myself we are working hard on developing the business in all areas over the next few months. It’s all very exciting and it’s been a long time coming as the growth and demand for creatively innovative parenting events in Norfolk is on the rise. It is super to have a likeminded business partner as this means we have more brainpower to develop lots more opportunities and exciting ideas. But, for now, back to the magazine. This issue covers until January and has a great variety of topics and businesses included. I really hope you enjoy reading it and hope to see you at our Christmas Market at The Forum on Sunday 15th December. Email: alex@theparentandbabyshow.co.uk or kerry@theparentandbabyshow.co.uk   As ever, a big thank you to our magazine sponsors:

EDD: what does this mean to you By Ann Roberts at About Birth & Babies

When I was pregnant with my first baby it was Expected Date of Delivery and was predicted by counting 40 weeks from the start of the last period.

after the date, a trip to the cinema, a meal out, a get together with some friends. Something that you will look forward to but which doesn’t matter if you baby appears in the meantime.

Not much has changed; we put a lot of faith into our Estimated Due Date as I prefer to call it. Sara Wickham, a research midwife, calls it a ‘questimate’. Most babies are born within two weeks either side of this date, so we could just say ‘our baby is due around the middle of September’; only about 5% of babies are born on their EDD.

You could spend time going for walks, putting some meals in the freezer, preparing your baby clothes, relaxing, watching some TV, reading. All those lovely leisure activities that you had no time for before maternity leave started.

For all those waiting for their babies to appear, if you reach or go past your due date it can seem as if your pregnancy is going on for ever. How about planning something nice to do just

Above all, have patience, most babies come when they are ready, as long as you and the baby are well and the baby is growing and moving around, enjoy the last days of pregnancy.

Does your baby’s position really matter during pregnancy? By Debbie at Baby Fit

Women have been birthing for hundreds of years without overthinking maternal positioning. However, our modern-day living has changed the way we move. In fact, compared to our ancestors, we hardly move at all and many jobs see us slouching, twisting and rocking back off the bones that were designed to be sat on, the ischial tuberosities. Otherwise known as your sitting bones. The way you move (or in many cases do not move) plays a role in the position, alignment and balance of your pelvis, which like a domino effect, can change the shape and alignment of your uterus. Babies will position themselves within the space they are given. This space can be optimised by mum with movement and flexibility, encouraging baby into their best position.

Article by Debbie at Babyfit Email: info@babyfit.me.uk   www.babyfit.me.uk

No one ever knows the exact journey your baby will take on their birth day but we know that, for example, a baby laying back to back (baby’s spine lying against mum’s spine) can not only intensify sensations but also possibly prolong the length of labour. Ideally a baby will have their back against mum’s belly, or towards mum’s left side. Most babies in this position will find it easier to navigate the space available, hopefully facilitating an easier birth experience. To find out more about how movement and exercise can help you through pregnancy for birth and beyond, head over to www.babyfit.me.uk and see what classes are available for you.

We are a global network of free to attend antenatal and postnatal groups. We believe every woman is entitled to a positive birth experience. We connect pregnant women together to share stories and experience, to challenge the fears around childbirth and change birth for the better! How can you achieve a POSITIVE birth? EMPOWER YOURSELF - learn as much as you can about the physiological process of birth, your choices around your birth environment, caregivers and interventions and plan for different scenarios. Perhaps attend antenatal classes or come along to a PBM meeting. Knowledge is power and informing yourself will make an enormous difference to your birth experience. TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS - women have been given birth for millennia, trust that your instincts are right and listen to them. ASK QUESTIONS - if you aren't sure about something one of your caregivers is telling you, ask them for more information. Ask them to explain why they feel their statement is relevant to you, your baby and your circumstances. FIND SUPPORT - get yourself a superstar birth partner, whom you trust and who can offer you wonderful, nurturing care and support during pregnancy and labour. Also seek out local like-minded women with whom to discuss your feelings, reassurance and who can help you feel confident. Build a tribe of women around you from whom you can take strength. SURROUND YOURSELF WITH POSITIVES - no more birth horror stories, no more scary birth videos. Flood your mind with positive thoughts and your confidence and excitement will grow! The importance of looking for a trained newborn photographer by Jess from Jess Wilkins Photography

If you are pregnant or holding your new baby in your arms and want to capture this fleeting time of your beautiful new baby, it can be difficult to know where to start when booking a baby photographer. Some parents may not know that newborn photography is a field which is sadly not regulated; meaning some photographers are posing babies with little, or even no training. Here are some points to consider when booking a shoot – I would always encourage parents to ask and look for the following: •

Research the photographer, would you be comfortable with your baby in their signature poses?

Do you believe your baby would be comfy? Do they look snug and safe in their portfolio?

Would you be happy to work with them and handing over your baby?

Have they got any evidence of insurance, training and do they talk about safety?

Can you see what their studio looks like? Or their work area? Does it look safe and welcoming?

My style is a mixture of lightly posed and natural imagery. I adore creating timeless images and ensuring it is a relaxing experience for the whole family. I have over 7 years experience and I have invested in lots in posing / safety training. I have also worked with mentors so that I can soothe, settle and also get beautiful images of newborns. I know price is always an important factor when booking a photoshoot, please consider pricing alongside the level of training and experience a photographer has too. I’d love to hear from you if you are looking to book a newborn shoot (or maternity, cake smash, older baby photoshoot too).

Ten AMAZING facts about you and your baby by Liz at One To Cherish

D I D YO U K N OW T H AT… 1.

Your baby prefers the sound of human voice over any other sounds. Talk to your baby, read them a story or even sing them a song. This will help with their language skills and support their brain development.

7.

You will instinctively speak to your baby in a low key and rhythmical manner, which attracts your baby and keeps your baby interested when talking to them, this is known as motherese/parentese.

2.

There is a LOVE hormone, known as Oxytocin, which is shared between parent and baby when they are close to each other. Skin to skin contact can help you both become calm and supports the bonding between you both.

8.

3.

Babies are able to mimic your facial expressions such as smiles and frowns. This can actually happen from birth. Try sticking out your tongue and watch your baby eventually copy you.

Your baby enjoys your taste in music, they have been listening in utero and know which music raises your heart rate and what slows it down, therefore songs that help you feel relaxed are likely to be the same ones your baby prefers after they are born.

9.

4.

Your baby’s brain will double in size by the time they reach their 1st birthday. Their brains develop rapidly and absorb everything they experience throughout the day/night, sleeping to process the information and log it into their brain.

Your baby is born with a natural ability to swim. Spending time with babies in water helps them develop their skills and additional skin to skin contact through doing so will build their trust in you whilst increasing their own confidence.

5.

Your baby’s cry is designed to make you sit up and take note. Research tells us that new parents are able to distinguish their own baby’s cry from any others, all within the first three days of them being born.

6.

Babies can see strong contrasting colours and patterns such as black and white, red and yellow. Sharing these colours/patterns with your baby offers stimulation for their brain and their eyes.

10. You are your baby’s first teacher.

You will be teaching them everything about relationships, turn taking and trust, essential skills they will need for the rest of their lives.

You are AMAZING, your babies are AMAZING and we are very grateful to have been a small part of your world through this article.

Greener Babywearing

by Angeline at Sleepy Nico When you have a new baby it can sometimes feel like you need to buy a lot of equipment and baby ‘things’, and with many of us trying to lighten our impact on the planet, this can be a worry. There are ways as a consumer and parent that you can carry your children and keep your impact on the planet as light as possible. Think about the following points when choosing a sling.

1.

2.

3.

Hire – there are sling libraries all over the UK. You don’t need to buy a sling. You could hire one (or many) for your children and have the flexibility of changing size and brand with ease and less expense. It’s an item that is used many times until it is worn out and this saves on packaging, fabric and potentially your purse.

Long term hiring isn’t for everyone and many people like to hire first and go on to buy their preferred carrier. There is a thriving pre-loved market for carriers and slings. It’s a good way not to create more waste and continue using something, which might otherwise be binned. Just remember to ensure that you are buying a sling that is still in good condition and safe – most second hand carriers will no longer be covered by a manufacturers guarantee.

Article written by Angeline at Sleepy Nico Angeline runs Sleepy Nico, which specialises in slings. Find her at www.sleepynico.com info@sleepynico.com  

Choose your sling wisely. If you decide to buy a new sling check out the company’s credentials and how they operate, are they doing everything they can to tread lightly on our planet? Think about: -

Where are they made? If they are made in the UK then they potentially don’t have such a large carbon footprint.

-

What are they made from? Is the fabric made here in the UK? Is it organic?

-

How much packaging is used? Can you reuse or recycle it?

-

What steps are they taking to reduce their impact on the environment?

Lots of home grown sling companies are leading the way with answers to these questions. Rowan Bay, woven in the UK have ditched their paper instructions. Oscha Slings are woven with BCI (Better Cotton Initiative) cotton and Sleepy Nico, which is made here in Norfolk and Suffolk - your perfect local, independent business.

When you become a parent, guilt can plague you, as you strive to care for you family to the best of your abilities. Often, it is tangled up with feeling like you are not good enough and not being the perfect parent Pressure of social media and well-meaning advice from people can add to it. All this gives your inner chatter ammunition to make you feel worse. Taking time each day, to focus on the good things can be a great antidote for this. And remind yourself that the perfect parent doesn’t exist. You are human, you make mistakes, you have limits and needs of your own and that’s all OK. Guilt can be a great prompt to check in with yourself and whether you are making choices that are the best fit for you. Being clear on how you want to be living life on your terms (your values and principles), and what your

key priorities are, really helps. You can use these as your blueprint to guide your decisions and choices. When the guilt kicks in, pause and ask yourself, “Am I acting in line with my values and priorities?”. Sometimes it might be that you then need to make some tweaks, to mean that it is a big fat YES. Parental guilt may always be there, but you can counteract it with focusing on what is important to you, what your priorities are and how you are being true to these each day. And remembering you are doing the best you can right now.

WE REVIEWED

My First Play: A Midsummer Night’s Nap by Alex at The Parent and Baby Show On Friday 19th July I went along to the press preview of My First Play: A Midsummer Night’s Nap at The Garage in Norwich. The play was a new, immersive retelling of the Shakespeare comedy for ages 0-7. Adapted and directed by All-In Productions’ Daniel Burgess. I have been to previous events at The Garage – my favourite being their ‘My First Play: Jack and the Beansprout’ over Christmas last year (with my toddler of course, who at that stage was nearly 2). So we were pretty excited to go along to this one. We had been promised enchanted forests, dressing up, dancing, singing and silliness, alongside being told we may even get turned into a donkey by mischievous fairy Puck. What I love the most about The Garage’s My First Plays are how relaxed and easy going they are. They are unlike any other and there is no need to worry about whether your child will sit still. They are designed so your little people can roam around, colour the floor with chalk, play with the characters, giggle and just HAVE FUN (that’s what it’s all about, right?). You can sit on the floor with cushions and relax knowing that there’s very little they can do to disturb others. We loved A Midsummer Night’s Nap and can’t wait to go to our fourth play at Christmas time… Rapunzel.

Top Tips for talking with your toddler by Norwich's Community Communication Champions How amazing is it to think that your toddler is learning to speak a new language and you are helping them? From the moment they are born they are taking in every word, even if they don’t understand the meaning. Even whilst still in the womb research shows babies can recognise their parents’ voices. The more you speak to your child, the more opportunities they will have to learn new words and extend their vocabulary. However it is not just about how much you say, it’s about what you say and how you say it. Here are some top tips that you could try that really will boost your child’s speech and language development: •

Talk about things that you can both see in front of you, this helps them to learn the names of things.

Comment on what they are doing or looking at (but avoid asking lots of questions – that can feel like a test).

Get down to their level so you are talking face-to-face.

Take turns with talking

Wait …children need extra thinking time to work out what has been said to them and then decide what to say back.

Listen and always respond in some way when your child says something.

Repeat the same words. Children need to hear words and sentences lots of times to understand them and learn new words.

If they say a word wrong it is best to say the word back to them showing you understood what they said but you are then letting them hear the right sound.

Try adding an extra word to what they say. If they say ‘bus’ you could say ‘yes, red bus’.

Relax and have fun…..talking, singing, sharing books are all great ways to boost your child’s language development.

WE REVIEWED

Energise Pentney Fitness and Spa by Alex at The Parent and Baby Show Our massages were equally as relaxing and we walked out feeling calm and energised (also quite hungry by this point which was handy as it was lunch time). Lunch was served in a slightly make-shift space, however it was beautifully decorated and we felt really looked after. On the menu was salmon salad and cheese and bacon quiche, which were both really tasty and filling. Good job as all this pampering was pretty hard work (if by hard work you mean doing nothing and enjoying time out). We finished our day off by trying out all the saunas, steam rooms and experience showers. Early in September we had the pleasure to head over to Energise-Pentney Fitness and Spa for a spa day for 2 of us. Pentney isn’t an area we often go to in Norfolk so we were really intrigued and excited for a little pampering and TLC. We were pleasantly surprised once we got into the facilities as we were welcomed and shown around, before given the keys to our lockers and lovely robes/slippers.

All in all, we would definitely recommend popping along to Energise. It’s reasonably priced and although it’s not huge, the staff are friendly and it’s a great place to escape to for a few hours. They have a whole host of treatments available, including a pregnancy spa ritual which looks great.

We kicked off with a dip in the outside heated vitality pool which was pretty big and warm (the September chill had already arrived after a heat wave the week before). Before we knew it though it was time for our couples massage – something we had both been looking forward to. As soon as we stepped into our treatment rooms there was a scent of relaxing aromatherapy oils (for those who enjoy a spa you will know how relaxing it is when you walk into a room infused with a scrummy blend of oils). Bliss!

Tips and Tricks For Home Education Parents by Lucy From The Life Schoolers Lucy, from The Life Schoolers, writes for each issue of our magazine about life as a family who home educates their 2 children, Archie (6) and Rocco (3) on a farm in rural (gorgeous) North Norfolk. We love Lucy’s articles and we hope other home educators enjoy reading Lucy’s tips and tricks below.

Lots of fun at ‘Roarr.’ on a home educators trip.

Here are just a few tips: •

Look out for off peak prices and discount vouchers. This often means that you can visit during term time when prices are lower and places are quieter.

Get together with a group of home educators and enquire about large group/school group discounts at various places of interest.

Check out the National Trust Education Pass. It is just £45 for a whole year and you can visit any of the properties midweek during term time.

Ask family members to gift experiences/ days out/annual passes for Christmas and Birthdays, instead of toys.

Visit various Norfolk Museums for free during term time. Just ring ahead and book.

Get creative! Make your own resources and even rope in the children to help.

Make use of your local libraries.

Share resources/books etc with fellow home educating families.

Get outside. The natural world has so much to offer to us for learning and growing. Whether it is the beach, the forest, a park or even just the garden, get out there in any weather for some free fun learning.

There is no doubt about it that home education can be a strain on the finances. Firstly... you know when your children eat you out of house and home during the school holidays? Now imagine that 365 days of the year. Then add onto that the days out, the groups (including sports, art, music and languages), the resources for learning opportunities and the fact that in order to home educate, a family is often relying on a single income. However, there are plenty of ways to keep the spending down whilst still having lots of fun and of course, doing lots of learning. Learning history at Gressenhall for free during term time.

Learning about the wind is fun AND free.

These are just a few ideas to get you going and to hopefully save you some money in the run up to Christmas. I often share money saving tips on my Instagram, so keep your eyes peeled on there too. Find Lucy on   Email: thelifeschoolers@gmail.com www.thelifeschoolers.co.uk

Learn Through Baking with The Life Schoolers

I have mentioned in previous magazines about how much we learn through everyday experiences and I often use baking as an example of this. In case you haven’t already spotted it on our Instagram account, here are a few things a child can learn through baking: Reading recipes and discussing likes and dislikes when choosing what to bake. Writing out a shopping list, having checked the recipe and what you have in the cupboards. Reading labels and comparing prices of similar items on the shelves in the shop, whilst ticking them off the list on the way round. Discussing quantity, sizes and quality of the product is an option here too. Paying for the items in cash at the till. Working out what coins and notes to pay with, then checking the change. You could even look at the receipt together and talk about how the prices are added up. Did the till get it right? Did you get the right change?

Reading through the recipe and following the instructions. I like to write out the recipe in a more simple way, so that it can be followed almost independently. Weighing, measuring, estimation, accuracy, sizes and amounts all come into play when adding the ingredients. Taking turns and listening to others. Noticing cause and effect with mixing, combining and the baking itself. Timings, temperatures and keeping safe near a hot oven. Personal hygiene and its importance when preparing food. Safe use of tools and utensils. Planning and design for decorating. Teamwork when clearing up afterwards. Thinking of others and who we could share with. You could even add in a bit of socialising and invite some friends round to enjoy your goodies together. I could go on and on. Recently we made some yummy (rather huge) gingerbread men. The boys had so much fun and barely even realised what they were learning.

Mums Empowerment Movement's

Guide to a ‘Do It Yo-(ho-ho) s-elf’ Christmas As a mum of two smaller children (aged 7 and 3) I’m much more about doing activities at Christmas to make memories, rather than going over the top with big gestures and huge gifts. So, here are my top five ways to pull off a DIY Christmas on a budget: 1. CREATE HOMEMADE GIFTS Whether it is making jam, truffles, fudge or something similar, homemade gifts are a festive and personal way to spread joy over the Christmas season, and are a definite way to put a smile on a loved-ones face. Sofia Querido, Mums Empowerment Movement mum suggests making “cookies, liquors, olive oils, cakes, bread and soaps...as she really thinks it’s more appreciated even though it takes a bit more effort.” 2) BATCH COOK AND RECYCLE FOOD Cooking a big turkey or huge joint of meat needn’t be wasteful, as the leftovers of this, along with plenty of veg, can be used to make a curry or soup, which can be frozen and used for fast future meals. For fun, the kids can get involved, making this a great activity to do on a cold Winter afternoon too. 3) MAKE FESTIVE CRAFTS Creating Christmas decorations, giftwrap and cards out of the children’s drawings and pictures collected throughout the year is a great way to recycle, doing our bit for the environment, as well as spending time inside in the warm together as a family. You can even go the extra mile and make crackers ready for the Christmas day table. To make these Mums Empowerment Movement mum Vicki Lowes suggests “Wrap half a kitchen roll tube with a napkin and add a small gift. We’ve used personalised magnets in the past.” When it comes to cracker gifts, Mums Empowerment Movement mum India Bonnett says “We do a secret Santa cracker item...1) small spend limit and 2) it needs to fit inside a cracker.”

4) WANDER THROUGH WOODLAND Popping on your wellies, hat, scalf, gloves and coat, and taking a walk through the local park or woods is a fun activity for all the family. Plus, collecting twigs, leaves and pinecones along the way means you can all make a beautiful door wreath together afterwards. 5) ENTERTAIN IN THE EVENING Whether it be popping on a festive film or having a Christmas disco dance party in your lounge (complete with popcorn, cookies and other baked bits) the whole family can spend time together without leaving the house and spending a small fortune. Whatever you plan, why not make outfits for each other for the evening using old clothes and decorations too? We hope you have a super fabulous DIY Holiday Season, and invite you to join in with our Mums Empowerment Movement to connect, support and empower mums throughout the UK at www.mumsempowermentmovement.co.uk
