In a joint venture between the Munster Fire Department and Munster FireďŹ ghters Association, local ďŹ reďŹ ghters sold and wore new Tshirts that served to raise awareness and some $5,815 in funding. Proceeds will help to support classes and programs for cancer patients.

Deputy Chief Dave Strbjak said that the department organized the fundraiser with the initial goal of selling 250 T-shirts. The ďŹ reďŹ ghters association, made up of past and present ďŹ reďŹ ghters of the Munster Fire Department, partnered with them on the project. “We far surpassed our initial goal, selling 719 shirts and collecting $5,815.09 in funding for the center,â€? Strbjak said. “It was a huge accomplishment driven by all of our ďŹ reďŹ ghters both past and present and, so successful, we intend to make this an annual event.â€?

Funds from the Munster department’s efforts beneďŹ t the Cancer Resource Centre. The resource center is a program of the Community Cancer Research Foundation, a nonproďŹ t organization dedicated to improving the quality of cancer care in northwest Indiana and south Chicago suburbs.

Since ďŹ rst opening its doors in 2003, the Cancer Resource Centre has offered all of its services free of charge to all who enter, including those receiving care from medical treatment facilities other than the hospitals of Community Healthcare System. The center is funded from donations and grants, in-kind donations and volunteer support.

Individuals may check out books, view videotapes and other educational material within the library or conduct internet searches to obtain research concerning diagnosis, treatment and general information. New volunteer manager enjoying ‘rewarding’ position %\ &$55,( 67(,1:(* )HDWXUH :ULWHU Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana has a new volunteer manager, Charlie Misovye. One of his missions in his new position is a volunteer campaign to help increase the number of volunteer drivers.

Besides providing hot meals to individuals unable to prepare meals for themselves, the visits are something social that the recipients look forward to and those stops by delivery drivers also serve as well-being check. Many of the drivers develop personal connections with those they deliver to.

Misovye comes to Meals on Wheels after serving as the group sales coordinator for Theatre at the Center,

located at The Center for Visual and Performing Arts in Munster.

He also coordinated the Theatre for Young Audiences program and the Friends of the Theatre donor program, as well as various fundraising and special events.

Misovye has a bachelor’s degree in theater from Illinois State University. He has worked as a professional actor, singer, dancer, director and choreographer throughout the Midwest.

“I really like my new job,” said Misovye. “The staff is amazing. It’s a great team effort on behalf of our clients.

The clients really appreciate our volunteer deliveries to their door. Our volunteers are turning their empathy and compassion into action.”

ties, Misovye came into the role in a particularly busy time of year. He is responsible for scheduling over 600 volunteers, who do home delivery routes in the northwest Indiana area, as well as kitchen staff, office staff and paid drivers.

Due to the pandemic and vacations, there is a great need for substitute drivers.

“It’s very fulfilling to be paid to fulfill the needs of people unable to supply meals for themselves. It’s very rewarding on that level to know we are making a difference in someone’s life almost every day,” he said.

The Meals on Wheels program runs Monday through Friday as a mix of self-pay and those receiving monetary assistance. It does meal deliveries to not just elderly residents, but those of any age who might need temporary help after recovering from surgery, illness or having a new baby or more permanent service for individuals who may be handicapped or disabled.

The new volunteer campaign, “The Gift of Volunteering is Priceless,” was recently launched, Misovye said.

“We provide the meals, you provide the wheels. Be a part of something bigger than yourself and discover how you can become great by serving others,” said Misovye.

Volunteers needed for free tax preparation program United Way of Porter County is seeking volunteers to help northwest Indiana residents file their 2020 federal and state income taxes in the 2021 tax season.

Operated under the guidance of the Internal Revenue Service, the program is hosted by United Way of Porter County. The volunteer income tax assistance program provides free tax filing services to all residents with an adjusted gross income of $57,000 or less.

“This is such a needed service. Now more than ever, our folks need to file in a timely manner,” said Kim Olesker, president and CEO of United Way of Porter County. “It could not be done without the help of dedicated volunteers.”

In preparation for the

upcoming tax season, they are looking for volunteers to assist with filing resident tax forms. Program services will be altered to comply with COVID restrictions and keep volunteers safe. Program procedures will be minimal contact with phone and online consultations.

No previous experience is required, hours are flexible and the program training is free.

Tax professionals, enrolled agents and non-credentialed return preparers can earn continuing education credits by volunteering.

Purdue educators offer lawn care series If you want a greener, healthier lawn and want to do it yourself, Purdue Extension is offering a four-part online series of classes to help learn.

The virtual series will be from 6:30-9 p.m. or 5:30-8 p.m.

Feb. 4, 11, 18 and 25.

Topics to be covered include: lawn fertilization, mowing, lawn pests, irrigation needs, weed management, lawn renovation and lawn establishment.

The recommendations given in the program will be based on research by Purdue Extension

in Indiana.

Previous hobby leads to career as art teacher %\ &$55,( 67(,1:(* )HDWXUH :ULWHU It was an earlier pandemic that played a part in Jan Krediet’s career as an art teacher. Krediet realized she had a passion for art when she contracted the Hong Kong Flu as a child, an illness which affected millions around the world in the 1960s. While she was ill and out of school for three months, she started drawing with a pad and chalk that her aunt gave her to keep her busy.

She spent hours with that pad and chalk and she learned that it was something she enjoyed. She loved it so much that she is now in her 43rd year of teaching, with the majority of that time as an art teacher.

“I just started drawing and I realized I could do this,” said Krediet. “Then I really got into it as I was growing up and started winning contests. My specialty is painting and drawing.”

She currently teaches at Crown Point Christian School to students in kindergarten through eighth grade. She also instructs canvas painting classes about once a month to adults at Kolas Christian Bookstore and she conducts private painting parties at homes, churches, schools and other venues.

Krediet, a Cedar Lake resident, spent 25 years teaching at Calvary Academy before she was hired at Crown Point Christian School. She spent some time working part time at both schools until a full-

Her favorite part about the job is, she said, “the kids, the laughter and seeing a smile on their faces.”

“I want them to like it,” said Krediet. “I really love it and have been blessed with being able to teach this long. I love going to work.”

As much as she loves it, she isn’t sure how much longer she’ll be able to continue. As part of safety precautions during the pandemic, Krediet now has to wheel a cart from room to room in younger grades rather than the students coming to her classroom to minimize movement of the children.

“It’s a lot of walking and I’m getting older,” Krediet said. “But I’m thankful the school has been open through COVID. There have been just a couple cases. I’ve been working every day.”

Besides teaching in the classroom at Crown Point Christian School, she teaches workshops and hosts painting parties. She also does a number of random painting jobs for clients and she has sold some of her paintings at a local farmer’s market.

I have been in business for almost 15 years. I believe in treating people fair. Because of this, a big part of my business comes from referrals or repeat clients. Before discarding items or giving them away, please give me the opportunity or someone with experience in antiques to take a look at it for valuation. According to the American Bar Association, 60% of all Americans have done no end of life planning whatsoever, not even a will. You could do a will, but wills end up in probate when you die. Do you really want your children to end up in probate court when you pass away?

If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re like most Americans nowadays, you may be considering a living trust rather than simply doing a will. The assets that are in the living trust at the time you pass away can totally avoid probate. There are a number of other documents that would also be present in a good estate plan, including: 1. Living will to make sure youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not forever hooked up to

machines, if thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no hope for recovery.

2. HIPAA waiver so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not a felony for the doctors to communicate with your spouse or your adult children in the event that you become disabled.

3. Health care power of attorney so the doctors and family will know what persons you want to be in charge to make long-term medical decisions in the event you become unable to make your own medical decisions.

4. In-home health care instructions. Nursing homes cost $7,500 a month. If you have a good living trust that contains in-home health care instructions, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a good chance it can keep you or your spouse out of a nursing home, saving most of that $7,500 each month, meanwhile maintaining your own privacy and dignity and allowing you to remain in your own home.

5. We can put in a funeral planning declaration, personal effects distribution memorandums and build in remarriage protection so that if your surviving spouse gets remarried after you die, they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t lose half of everything you own to a new spouse.

A new standardized letter is now available for those times when you need proof of Social Security benefits, Supplemental Security Income or Medicare. Batman and Robin: Pow! Oof! Crash! â&#x20AC;&#x153;Batmanâ&#x20AC;? featured an ear-candy theme song, barbaric death traps, innovative gadgets and repulsive villains (each one represented by a celebrity guest). The show was played for laughs all the way and poked fun at melodrama while injecting pop-culture references into the action. With all this rolled into a presentation best described as %\ 5$1'$/ â&#x20AC;&#x153;campâ&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x201D; something so bad or corny & +,// as to be declared â&#x20AC;&#x153;goodâ&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x201D; how could it have missed?

The answer? It couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t. And didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t. For a while.

The executive producer of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Batmanâ&#x20AC;? was William Dozier. Before his 1966â&#x20AC;&#x201C;1968 series went into production, Dozier read through numerous â&#x20AC;&#x153;Batmanâ&#x20AC;? comic books â&#x20AC;&#x201D; he had never read a comic book in his life â&#x20AC;&#x201D; before admitting, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I had just the simple idea of overdoing it, of making it so square and so serious that adults would ďŹ nd it amusing and kids would go for the adventure.â&#x20AC;?

The series was the ultimate DC Comics adaptation for the small screen. Unveiled as a sometimes satirical, sometimes slapstick sitcom, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Batmanâ&#x20AC;? starred Adam West as businessman Bruce Wayne/Batman. West (born William West Anderson) earned a B.A. degree in literature, then worked as a military radio announcer and a milkman before becoming a TV and movie actor.

Burt Ward, a karate expert and former standout high school athlete, was attending college and working in his fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s real estate ofďŹ ce when, just out of his teens, he earned the sidekick role of Dick Grayson/Robin. (In the process, Ward beat out future TV star Lyle Waggoner.)

Batman and Robin were crime-ďŹ ghting goofballs who defended ďŹ ctional Gotham City against a plethora of preposterous villains who were always involved in exaggerated situations. The â&#x20AC;&#x153;Dynamic Duoâ&#x20AC;? heroes took these situations seriously, of course, which of course added to the merriment.

TVâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;Batman,â&#x20AC;? the only prime-time laughathon without a laugh track, was developed on the most ridiculous of premises: Two costumed and masked vigilantes were working hand in hand (or hand in glove) with a bumbling police department that was constantly bafďŹ&#x201A;ed

by the bad guys. The ingenious story lines featured simplistic morality in a humorous vein. In each episode, Batman and Robin pursued dubious clues that revealed the supervillainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s plans and, in the end, always saw the pair capturing the evildoer.

The producers brought in as many wicked foes as possible, including the now-iconic Riddler (Frank Gorshin, John Astin), the Penguin (Burgess Meredith), the Joker (Cesar Romero) and Catwoman (Julie Newmar, Eartha Kitt).

The popularity of the ďŹ rst seasonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s show generated an avalanche of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Batmanâ&#x20AC;? merchandise, which included

The series offered 120 action-packed half-hour episodes. In time, however, the novelty of the show began to wear thin and, by the end of the third season, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Batmanâ&#x20AC;? had lost much of its Batluster. Eventually, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Batmanâ&#x20AC;? winged its way to lucrative Syndication Heaven. Seniors should start early to be physically active %\ 67(9( (89,12 )HDWXUH :ULWHU Paul Oros of Hobart has the right idea when it comes to ďŹ tness. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not waiting for New Yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s resolutions to consider a workout regimen. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s long been active.

A retired Hammond ďŹ reďŹ ghter, Oros regularly visits the ďŹ tness center at the Hobart Family YMCA. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You gotta be in shape if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re a ďŹ reďŹ ghter,â&#x20AC;? Oros said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re always picking up very heavy, whether itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s people or other stuff.â&#x20AC;?

Oros retired as a ďŹ reďŹ ghter in 2013 after 33 years on the Hammond Fire Department.

He had been into distance running before he injured himself.

Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s when, at age 49, he changed his workout routine to ďŹ tness centers.

The retiree averages ďŹ ve trips to the Hobart YMCA weekly, sometimes going four or six times. His workout usually lasts around one hour. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I try to focus on everything â&#x20AC;&#x201D; arms, legs, strengthening,â&#x20AC;? said Oros, who uses a variety of ďŹ tness machines addressing different body parts.

According to Silver Sneakers, a senior workout program offered at health centers around northwest Indiana, including the Hobart YMCA, seniors ages 65 and older should get at least 2.5 hours of moderate aerobic exercise each week. That averages about 30 minutes per day.

Regarding vigorous exercise, seniors should get one hour and 15 minutes of activities, such as jogging, each week.

Oros admitted the toughest part of any exercise routine is getting out of bed and heading

to the gym. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Once youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re there, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re there and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to work out,â&#x20AC;? he said.

For those too tempted to pump iron using a pillow and blanket, Silver Sneakers offers these eight strategies for exercising after the holidays: â&#x20AC;˘ Remember why youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re doing it. â&#x20AC;˘ Start small and be realistic. â&#x20AC;˘ Picture success. â&#x20AC;˘ Make workouts mandatory. â&#x20AC;˘ Track progress daily. â&#x20AC;˘ Recruit someone to help keep you accountable. â&#x20AC;˘ Hold yourself accountable, too. â&#x20AC;˘ Savor every success.

There is a program coordinated by Indiana University Northwest that allows senior members of the community to participate in learning opportunities.

The Center for Urban and Regional Excellence at Indiana University Northwest engages with the university and community in the creation of programs that are positive, sustainable and impactful.

CURE works collaboratively with organizations in mutually beneďŹ cial partnerships to promote continued learning and solution-based interaction.

The Senior University is an important part of CURE, serving the educational and social needs of those 55 and older. For nearly two decades, seniors have participated in programming delivered by IU Northwest.

Despite the challenges presented by the pandemic of 2020, CURE, in collaboration with the Senior Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s steering committee, was able to successfully transition from in-person to virtual or remote learning, while simultaneously fulďŹ lling the programâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mission and ensuring the health and safety of its participants. Pub Rock ‘I hear you knocking’ Dave Edmunds

His first taste of success came as the lead guitarist in the Welsh rock trio Love Sculpture, which scored a British Top Five single with the rapid-fire instrumental “Saber Dance.” When the group disbanded, Edmunds turned to record production and worked with English rockabilly artist Shakin’ Stevens, whose material was often culled from classic 1950s American recordings. This is when Edmunds became aware of “I Hear You Knocking.”

So had Edmunds perhaps heard the earlier hit version by an American woman?

Gale Storm (born Josephine Cottle) was the pert, pretty and squeaky-clean star of the 1950s TV show “My Little Margie.”

In 1955, she scored a No. 2 Billboard winner with “I Hear You Knocking.” Storm’s biggest career hit was a blanched offering of an obscure R&B (rhythm and blues) tune from earlier that year. Storm’s “cover” 45 was typical of many such releases at the time; major record labels frequently brought in white artists to copy R&B best-sellers, which were usually released on small independent labels, in order to target record-buying teenagers with allowances to spend.

Pub (short for “public house” or bar in England) rock was a musical genre popular in the UK during the early to mid-1970s.

Loud and raw, its primitive approach to the music flew in the face of the more refined “glam” style. (Think Queen and David Bowie here.) Pub rock laid the foundation for punk rock that came later in the decade.

Born in Cardiff, Wales, in 1944, Edmunds had drifted through several bands since age 10, when he and older brother Geoff formed a rockin’ piano team called the Edmund Brothers Duo. Edmunds later played in a series of minor league bar bands.

the tip jar. He usually rode to gigs on city buses after toiling all day at manual labor. Smiley’s nickname came from his having no front teeth.

during the holidays, I should not be popping in and out of stores. I will follow this advice because I do have an underlying condition: I’m scared to death of her.

To keep the romance alive, I have tried very hard to make sure Mary Ellen is aware that I am staying involved with whatever she is doing. For example, if she is looking at something on the computer and says “Awww…,” I’ll ask: “What’s so cute?” At that point she asks me to scoot my chair over and look at the YouTube video. Of a kitten. And I watch it. For. Six. Endless. Minutes.

If she is downstairs on the treadmill watching a show on her iPad and I hear her laughing uproariously, I trudge down to the lower level and ask her, “What’s so funny?”

Let’s say it’s a Grace and Frankie episode. She’ll patiently describe to me the entire set-up, which is something no person can really ever successfully accomplish.

But I giggle anyway. That’s what good husbands do.

The other day, I realized she seldom asks about my own audible reaction to videos or something I am reading. For example, recently we were sitting next to each other on the couch while I looked at my laptop at an amazing story. At one point, I belted out: “Wow, that is really weird.” There was no reaction, no apparent curiosity to see what had triggered that response from me. She just continued with

whatever she was reading.

Minutes later, as a little experiment, I tried a different tack. “Oh dear!” I exclaimed, looking directly at her, “this is just terrible news.”

No response. Her eyes remained focused on her own material. I tried again. This time I burst out laughing.

Ha ha ha ha ha…HO! (I threw in that extra HO! just for the Christmas season. Still nothing.)

One final try. While watching a video posted on social media, I pretended to cry.

Bawling my eyes out. Mary Ellen was sitting right next to me, still concentrating on something. When I got no response, I said: “Mary Ellen, I’ve been sobbing for two minutes. Don’t you want to ask me something?”

“I’m sorry. Do you want a tissue?”

I then explained to her why her lack of interest and curiosity bothered me.

“Dick, unlike you, I am always very focused when I am working on something. I block out everything else. Remember, I’m the one who does our taxes, oversees our health care coverage and carefully analyzes our investments.”

I was embarrassed. I was being self-centered and needy.

“I am so sorry, Mary Ellen.

You do handle most of the important responsibilities in the household. So what were you doing when I was weeping for two minutes?”

“Sudoku.”

Highland woman lives her faith through volunteer service %\ 67(9( (89,12 )HDWXUH :ULWHU Eloisa Diaz may not be the tallest person at The Salvation Army, but her volunteering spirit gives her plenty of stature.

Since 2000, Diaz, a Highland resident, has been volunteering at The Salvation Armyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Munster facility. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Anything I can do,â&#x20AC;? Diaz said of her volunteer service. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If I see something in the kitchen I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like, I ďŹ x it.â&#x20AC;?

Diaz has become something of a ďŹ xture, volunteering ďŹ ve days a week, arriving at 8:15 a.m. and leaving for home at 4:30 p.m. She always seems to ďŹ nd some way to help. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It gives me something to do,â&#x20AC;? she said wryly. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It keeps me busy.â&#x20AC;?

Diaz has found other ways to stay occupied. In 2005, she headed south for Hurricane Katrina relief. In 2008, when ďŹ&#x201A;ooding struck the Munster community, she got involved.

When she thinks of living her faith, she considers â&#x20AC;&#x153;living the Ten Commandments, trying to go right in everything.â&#x20AC;?

Diaz recalled her grandmother taking her as a girl to Confraternity of Christian Doctrine classes. These days, friends invite her to womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s biblical ministry classes at The Salvation Army.

Although she is not a member of The Salvation Armyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s faith community, Diaz likes attending Bible classes at the Munster center. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They explain the Bible so good,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m learning a little bit every time I go.â&#x20AC;?

As she reads her Bible, Diaz admitted, â&#x20AC;&#x153;learning a little more with every chapter.â&#x20AC;?

Although she cannot pinpoint a speciďŹ c favorite Scripture passage or quote, Diaz likes the imagery of light found in the Psalms. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We see all the lighthouses providing light and leading us along safely,â&#x20AC;? she said.

The holidays were a busy time at the Munster facility, one of three Salvation Army facilities in Lake County, joining East Chicago and Gary-Merrillville. Even with COVID-19, the center is full of activity. Other volunteers were arranging Christmas gifts and food for 2,200 youngsters, representing more than 600 families.

Diaz can be found working in the food pantry, which due to the coronavirus has become a full-time operation. According to Capt. Brian Clark, coordinator for the three Lake County Salvation Army sites, calls to the food pantry have grown 500%. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going full-time with half the staff,â&#x20AC;? Clark noted.

You take your plate and imagine a line down the middle and then ďŹ lled one half with low starch vegetables and fruits and the other half with higher starch vegetables. They can be hot, cold or mixed. Give this some thought â&#x20AC;&#x201D; you will be eating fruit and low starch veggies on one half, which is going to displace the calorie density from the other half of high starch items such as potatoes, beans and grains.

Eating this way for as little as four days will reset your taste buds to not crave the unhealthy, high calorie foods which may have been consumed during the holidays.

Low starch choices are plentiful and may include about 60 foods of which a few are: broccoli, cauliďŹ&#x201A;ower, carrots, all greens, celery, mushrooms, onions, cabbage, lettuce, toma-

toes, asparagus, beets, green and yellow beans, zucchini and fruit.

The higher starch choices would be: potatoes (no oil), sweet potatoes, corn, lentils, beans and intact grains.

The possibilities are endless on how you could ďŹ ll a plate with all these items. If you want seconds, go right ahead, but you should still maintain the 50/50 rule so you shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a second sweet potato unless you also have more low calorie density foods as well.

You could also combine them by making a vegetable soup that has potatoes or beans in it or a mega salad loaded with veggies and topped with beans or a grain.

I will often put a salad on one side of my plate and sweet potato with mushrooms on the other side. Chinese veggies over brown rice would work out well as a mixed plate, too.

Sometimes simple is the best.

Give it a try and I think youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll see how quickly you reset into eating a healthier diet and get on track to take on 2021. Cheers to the New Year.

Floaters are in the eyes of the beholder ... usually %\ &(&,/ 6&$*/,21( 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV When it comes to ďŹ&#x201A;oaters, the eyes have it. These eye specks and clouds can be a brief diversion or stubborn irritant.

No one really knows why.

We do know that they usually affect folks starting in their 50s.

They are cells or bits of vitreous material that can drift through the eye ďŹ&#x201A;uid for lengthy periods or fall slowly to the ďŹ&#x201A;oor of the eye where the brain will ignore them.

Floaters are generally seen as harmless. But they can be harbingers of serious eye conditions

such as a retinal tear or detachment, which is a serious threat to your eyesight. Floaters may also signal diabetic bleeding of the eye or a blocked blood vessel. They often appear after procedures to eliminate cataracts; in that case, they could be detritus from the procedure.

They can resemble small ďŹ&#x201A;ashing lights, strands of thread, dancing black spots, small dirtlike clumps or misty swirls.

At the ďŹ rst sign of ďŹ&#x201A;oaters, visit your eye doctor so she can give you a thorough examination and determine a course of action.

This can range from just ignoring them because theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re harmless to

serious surgery to repair damage.

In some cases, laser treatment can zap the spots out of existence.

Most oldsters have experienced these ďŹ&#x201A;oating phenomena. Some say they just quit what theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re doing and do something different for a few moments and the ďŹ&#x201A;oaters disappear. Others get up and do a bit of exercise to get rid of them. Many soothe their eyes with a washcloth or towel soaked in warm water.

If they crowd in while youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re working at a computer, lowering the brightness of the screen helps them disappear.

Sunglasses soften their edge if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re outdoors.

Check blood pressure in both your arms %\ &(&,/ 6&$*/,21( 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV Almost everyone has a blood pressure monitor around the house these days.

Some use it regularly, while others bring it out during times

of stress, after physical activity or just now and then.

When you check your blood pressure, whether itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s with the handy wristband monitor or the buzzing blow-up arm band, you should take a reading from both arms.

Medical experts report a difference of 10 points or more in the reading could mean a higher risk of a heart attack. If your reading shows this kind of difference, meet with your doctor to discuss the matter.

The narrow island, which is just a half-mile wide and only seven miles long, is accessible by a series of three bridges extending from the *5($7 mainland (6&$3(6 where SRs %\ 52' .,1* 775 and 771 intersect. Cost to enter the island on Boca Grande Causeway is $6, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a small price to pay to experience paradise.

First people to inhabit the area were the Calusa Indians around 5000 B.C. and on Gasparilla Island between 800 and 900 B.C. Nine ancient ďŹ shing village sites have been identiďŹ ed with large shell mounds containing pottery shards, ďŹ shhooks and arrowheads.

Like the Indians, the ďŹ rst white settlers came to ďŹ sh in the 1870s. Spanish and Cuban ďŹ shermen salted and sent their catches to Havana and other markets.

The island quickly became a sport ďŹ shing mecca and later earned the title of the Tarpon Fishing Capitol of the World.

Folklore says that the infamous pirate Gasparilla (aka Jose Gaspar) had his headquarters on the island and purportedly buried an enormous treasure here. Many came with shovels in hand to dig it up and become rich, but, if there was one, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s still hidden. Around 1900, the whole pirate myth was exposed as a marketing ploy by the hotels

and railroad to get visitors to the island.

In 1905, the railroad connected Boca Grande to the outside world and the island became the terminal for the phosphate shipping industry. Trainloads of the ore arrived every day and were off-loaded at the port at the southern end of the island into ships for transport around the world. The railroad also brought tourists, many of whom stayed to make Boca Grande their home.

When the phosphate shipping business dried up in 1979, the islandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s primary industry became tourism.

President George Bush and his family found the island to their liking and often stayed at the Gasparilla Inn and Club, which is one of the largest and oldest resort hotels in the state. It was built in 1913 and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Centerpiece of Boca Grande today is the 1907 train station. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s home to the Loose Caboose Restaurant and where islanders can choose from more than 15 ďŹ&#x201A;avors of ice cream from a closet-size, walk-in/carryout shop. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s usually a line of people seated on the low wall along the sidewalk outside enjoying their treat.

Another must-see is Banyan Street. Huge banyan trees with their vine-like roots dropping from above line both sides of the block-long street forming a tall, shady tunnel that is at least 10 degrees cooler than the surrounding area. At the southern tip of the island is Port Boca Grande Lighthouse and Museum which highlights the islandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s history and culture.

I felt overwhelmed â&#x20AC;&#x201D; cautious but conďŹ dent.

I wanted to ask my Uber driver if heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d been to any restaurants, marched in a protest or knew anyone with the virus. But I was pretty sure those were inappropriate questions. So I sat back, then forward, and tried not to touch anything.

At the airport, with hours to spare before my ďŹ&#x201A;ight, I worried about whether I should risk going to the bathroom.

I unsheathed the ďŹ rst of the 27 Purells in my purse and braved the ladiesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; room. I emerged unscathed, I think.

I looked around. I was in a ghost town: empty check-in counters, empty security lines, empty restaurants, empty escalators. But I knew the virus

lurked around every corner.

At the boarding gate, masked marauders attempted some sort of social distancing. I looked for an empty seat. One individual was not wearing a mask. I bristled. I peered around to see if anyone else shared my ire, but all I saw were eyes. I havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t learned how to read just eyes.

I was ďŹ&#x201A;ying Southwest.

Instead of the usual 60-passenger lineup, they boarded 10 at a time, at six-foot intervals. On board, middle seats remained empty unless occupied by family members.

Everyone was masked and cleaning every surface in sight.

I noticed one or two pairs of goggles. Should I have worried about contracting the virus through my eyes?

I stared down at my book, but couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see any of the words: my glasses kept fogging up from my mask.

The safety brieďŹ ng started.

I was surprised it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t on Zoom. I thought everything was on Zoom now.

If there was an emergency and the oxygen masks lowered, should you remove your virus mask before attaching? I assumed so. These are things we didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to worry about before.

Upon arrival, everyone retrieved their bags. I stayed in my seat. Have they never heard of social distancing?

Finally outside and heading to the car, I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get my mask off fast enough. Breathing in the cool Maine air was like an elixir.

Then I remembered. According to Maine guidelines, I had to quarantine for 14 days â&#x20AC;&#x201D; just in time for my return trip.

But wait! I was tested for the virus the requisite 72 hours earlier. I was negative.

No worries.

Then I realized: I could have contracted it on the plane.

I was still in â&#x20AC;&#x153;Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wrong with this picture?â&#x20AC;? mode as I rode off toward Rangeley.

Hailing from Decatur, Pendy Selbring, with husband Ken Selbring, toted a Senior Life on their trip to Metamora, Batesville and Oldenburg for a spring getaway. Pendy is pictured in front of the Ben Franklin III, a horse-drawn wooden canal boat located in the historic town of Metamora. Part of the Whitewater Canal State Historic site, the original Ben Franklin was used as a freighter constructed of wood and fiberglass. Its predecessor now offers 25-minute cruises along the canal, passing thorough a wood aqueduct, 16 feet above Duck Creek.

The Duck Creek aqueduct is the only one still in service in the country. The tour, happening Wednesdays through Sundays, May through October, also includes vistas of Duck Creek and a restored canal lock, one of 56 that aids in the canalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 491 foot drop in elevation.

Metamora also boasts of its working Grist Mill, open on Wednesdays through Sundays, April through mid-December. It has produced meal and flour for more than 100 years. Many charming shops, eateries, B&Bs and attractions fill this old-timey town. If the flag outside the establishment is flying, it means the shop is open and ready for business. Most are open on weekends May through December. Many come to see the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Old Fashioned Christmas Walk holiday-themed festival.

Whitewater Valley Railroad offers a Valley Flyer train for visitors staying in nearby Connorsville, wanting to take a quick jaunt into Metamora. The heritage railroad also operates a 2-mile excursion, taking visitors to see the sights along the restored canal. The trains run weekends and other special times.

If nature is more your style, the Metamora area offers 2.6 miles of a hiking and biking trail, camping, cabins, canoeing and 700 acres of wooded trails for horseback riding lovers.

An adventure in good eating %\ 3$6725 *5(* /$:621 0 0LQ 06: *XHVW :ULWHU Coming from a family of good cooks and restaurant operators, I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t resist buying, in an antique store, a 1957 edition of Duncan Hinesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; book in which presented 317 pages of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Good Eating Places Along the Highways of America.â&#x20AC;?

In alphabetical order by state, I immediately turned to Indiana and, among other cities, found two Hammond restaurants listed as recommended by the famous Hines, â&#x20AC;&#x153;a connoisseur of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;good eatingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; of the best American types.â&#x20AC;?

Being listed in Hinesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; book, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Adventures in Good Eating,â&#x20AC;? was indeed an honor.

Hines listed two of his favorite restaurants that readers most surely know more about than this writer who has never, unfortunately, visited the city of Hammond.

First, we journey back to 1957 and Brahos Coffee Shop near US 6 and Route 41.

Located at 5239 Homan Ave., the shop was open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. except Sundays and holidays.

Brahos served â&#x20AC;&#x153;homemade

pastries and breads,â&#x20AC;? among many other items. One could get breakfast for 40 to 70 cents, lunch for 70 cents to $1.50 and dinner for 90 cents to $2.50, all in an air-conditioned setting.

I became quite interested in the second restaurant called Phil Smidt and Son, located at 1205 N. Calumet Ave. Smidt served the customers from 11:45 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Area residents and travelers could always enjoy the restaurantâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s specialties of â&#x20AC;&#x153;perch, pike, chicken, frog legs, steak and lobster dinners.â&#x20AC;?

Imagine that in 1957, lunch was $1.25 and up and dinner was $2 and up. This air-conditioned restaurant was â&#x20AC;&#x153;a popular eating place â&#x20AC;Ś for thousands of people.â&#x20AC;?

Research reveals that Smidtâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s was started in 1910 and closed in 2007. Further, we can learn that â&#x20AC;&#x153;at its heyday, Smidtâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s served 2,000-plus pounds (35,000 pair) of the legs and 12 gallons of tartar sauce each month.â&#x20AC;? Smidtâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;was the place Chicagoans went for frogs legs and parsleyed tartar sauce.â&#x20AC;?

Rather than keep the Smidtsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; recipe a secret, the last owner (not a Smidt)

revealed it as follows and is public domain. Tartar sauce: 1 small bunch Italian ďŹ&#x201A;at-leaf parsley chopped, 1 cup sweet dill pickles, 1/2 onion and 2 cups mayo.

Frog legs ingredients: Butter-ďŹ&#x201A;avored cooking oil for frying, 1 1/4 cup allpurpose ďŹ&#x201A;our, 2 tablespoons potato ďŹ&#x201A;our (optional), 1 1/2 teaspoons seasoned salt, 2 pounds frogs legs, the smaller the better. Makes eight servings.

In all honesty, this writer has never eaten frogs legs and probably never will.

Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know what they even taste like.
