Sharin’ the Love

g l o From the executive editor

It’s been a heck of a ride, hasn’t it?

I t ’s time to flip those calendars, readers I t ’s time for a continuance

‘ Tis the season of love and romance. And it ’s also time to celebrate a balance of female sweetness + strength. Makes for a great magazine issue, don’t you think? We do, too so, we’ll explore it all

And with Valentine’s Day just around the snow y-swept corner, why not enjoy a Valentine’s Day Gift Guide for sweet ideas to gift to your love?

Count on this (and so much more!) in glo’s Februar y issue Help us share the glo love, won’t you? a

Not a redo, mind you. Sure, a new year sounds so exciting! I t ’s time to star t over Do over Take a mulligan Forget that last mistake like it never, ever happened Shut it out O f

Your Life Forever

Whew! Right?

But it doesn’t work that way And we shouldn’t wish it did (Except for tak ing mulligans as they are highly acceptable in my biennual golf round )

Do-overs mean you ‘forget.’ You pretend. You ac t as if things never happened. But, they did happen. Life can be tough. I t is tough. But, ladies? We are tougher.

A continuance is real and meaningful Why? Because we k now how to finish strong We embrace a continuance because we k now it ’s the challenges (and yes, the ick y, stink y par ts of life) that force us to grow To improve To transform into better versions of ourselves And then? We flourish.

During this season of New Year ’s self-reflec tion, we review with a raw, feel-it-from-the-gut analysis of the past year And, grieve if you must, but then toss the tissues and lace those shoes because you have your world to run I t ’s time to embrace those who make our worlds brighter and to be a light for those lost in the shadows

This, friends, is why we embrace a continuance. Why we accept, feel and then continue on, better than before. Then we may clearly define our dreams, work our tails off and bring those dreams to fruition. But only with the attitude of continuance, strength, authenticity and k indness from the core.

Sincere k indness is a power that builds upon itself I t flourishes and grows like a snowball So why not begin our own revolution of kindness?

And this is precisely the theme for the Januar y issue within your hands. Kindness. Self-improvement. And, we’ve added an array of new goodies to glo for 2018 among them, ‘Date Night ’ is back, and I’m (super) pleased to introduce with the nex t (Feb.) issue glo’s ‘Monthly Man Crush.’ You’re welcome, ladies. ☺

Join the journey throughout 2018 glo Magazine was made for YOU for women of ALL ages I value your readership and I value YOU You matter

Let ’s show what this glo region is made of. Let ’s spread the strongest female force in existence goodness + strength, powered by authentically glo-rious k indness.

Happy Januar y, readers

New Year,New Look Here’s how…

The first of the year is the per fec t time to freshen your look and amp up your self-care. After all, you deser ve some primping and pampering. So, if you’re up for a fresh cut, a stand-out st yle, or just want to feel fabulous and star t off 2018 with a st ylish “bang!, ” we’ve got some great tips from local exper ts.

G L A M + S T Y L E | B e a u t y , F a s h i o n + S p a 12 glo s january 2018

Get a Fab New ’Do

I t may seem counterintuitive, but if you’re look ing for a fresh new hairstyle this year, look to the past Think ‘70s and ‘80s, said Lexi Brewer, owner of NOVA Salon at For t Wayne Sola Salons “ Tex ture and bangs are mak ing their way back into style Shor ter styles like the bob and pixie cuts are in as well ”

Add tex ture with the help of produc ts like styling tex turizer, a paste that will “add definition and shine to your curls, ” said Brewer

Make Your Color Pop

“ This year is all about natural hair, ” said Ashley Hopper, owner of The H Society Salon at For t Wayne Sola Salons “From ashy brunettes to golden blondes and rich coppers, this year is about embracing and emphasizing natural hair.”

Add some face-framing highlights and contrast underneath from the bottom to make your color really pop Balayage is still going strong, said Hopper, but hair color is up-and-coming This is especially popular with the combination of blonde and brown recently showcased by celebrities on the red carpet. “Hybrids are more hand-painted color, with a combination of foils and weaves all at once, ” said Hopper. “ This allows the most customizable color fit just for your hair.”

Go Bold with Beauty

Teal liner is back! If you like bold makeup, now is your chance

Traditional coal, brown and gray are still standard for professionals, but women are embracing brighter colors even for ever yday looks

Test them out by mak ing one feature the focus of your look: go bold with your eyeliner and pair with a nude lipgloss. Or tr y a trendy tangerine lip stain paired with understated eye shadow in a neutral shade If the teal liner has your hear t, pair it with a barelythere neutral shadow and soft mauve at the eyebrow crease Blend well to avoid a harsh ‘80s look

Treat Yourself

Most impor tantly, take time for you Up your self-care regime to include some pampering, like a massage or aromatherapy session Amanda Tokos, multi-unit owner with Massage Envy said aromatherapy has been a popular choice for her clients

“ To enhance a massage session, I would recommend any of our six Rare Essence Aromatherapy Blends, which are incorporated into the massage session by infusing the essential oil with lotion at the time of the appointment; or [tr y] our sugar foot scrub ” While you’re treating yourself, add on an exfoliating hand or foot treatment or Massage Envy ’s Anti-Aging Eye Treatment Hot stone therapy is an often overlooked therapy in the coming spring months, said Tokos. Keep it in mind for some added relaxation.

When included in your regular regimen of exercise, plenty of water and good nutrition, a little pampering can go a long way toward mak ing you feel your best as a new you in the new year a

Andie Hines

O wner + Founder

A transplanted Lima, Ohio native who moved to the For t years ago, Andie Hines has painted our town a lovely crimson with her vibrant Red Tree corporate events and marketing agenc y (redtreepro com), of which she is the owner.

Give yet another shout-out to this high-honors graduate of the University of Saint Francis, proud mom of 14-year-old Emma, and an advocate for entrepreneurial women, with her newest venture which she founded: an online suppor t group called O wn Your Success.

The entity, said Hines, is to remove barriers for entrepreneurial women, “to help them create successful, sustainable businesses.”

Removing such barriers for women business owners include access to health care (“I’ve been work ing for over a year to find group insurance for us. And we’re work ing with Direc tCare LLC as a great supplement to Marketplace coverage”); office space (“ Within the nex t year, we’ll have a physical space that will be a shared office environment for entrepreneurial women in downtown For t Wayne”); network ing and mentoring (“ created through monthly programming and a quar terly professional development book club, as well as our ver y ac tive Facebook community ”); as well as assistance identifying funders and business par tnerships

“And finally, an overall elevation of the message that WE ARE HERE With only 3 percent of local business owners in For t Wayne being women, there is a serious need for voice, ” said Hines, “and I am shouting ours from the mountaintops to anyone who will listen both in government and the private sec tor ”

Hines provides monthly programming for these enterprising women on various topics such as business coaching, local professionals giving advice in their par ticular area of exper tise, and even personal development

OYS is in the process of getting its 501(c)(3) designation, according to Hines, whose experience includes 17 years in sales and marketing, a stint in ad agencies, work ing as direc tor of regional development for the For t Wayne Philharmonic, as well as experience within a national printing company

“ Then I had a brush with cer vical cancer and it was the wakeup call that I needed to go out on my own, ” said Hines “I realized that I could do so much more than just source printing for my clients ”

Hines draws her inspiration from the Bible, in John 16:33: “In this world you will have trouble But take hear t! I have overcome the world ”

As a single mom running a marketing company and a growing non-profit, life can get a bit hec tic But Hines is not deterred “I t ’s comfor ting k nowing God is in this with me; that even on the nuttiest days, He’s got it all under control, ” she said a

Valparaiso resident Kaci King is raising the “barre” on teenagers ever y where At 13, this homeschooled seventh grader is not only a professional ballerina but she is also a humanitarian, an ac tivist and a champion for self-confidence

“I’ve been studying ballet since I was four, ” she said. “In my toddler stages, I was obsessed with Angelina Ballerina. I t inspired me to be a ballerina myself (so) my mom put me in my first dance classes.”

Those classes led to K aci appearing as a Snow Tree Angel in the Joffrey Ballet Chicago’s produc tion of The Nutcracker in 2014, going ‘en pointe’ at the age of 11 and landing a lead role in the Indiana Youth Ballet ’s holiday produc tion last month. Between classes and rehearsals, K aci says she spends about 18 hours a week in the studio

“I really would love to dance professionally (full-time). I t is a dream of mine to make it into the Royal Ballet and become its prima ballerina, ” she said

After appearing on the television series “Abby ’s Studio Rescue, ” K aci made a connec tion with singer/songwriter Rachael Sage whose music was featured on the dance-based reality show “Dance Moms ” In 2011, K aci’s mom Julie King sent Sage a video of K aci dancing and Sage was so impressed, she invited the youngster to appear in the music video for her anti-bullying song “I don’t believe it ”

“ That song affec ted me a lot My mom contac ted Rachael one day and before we k new it, she wanted me for her music video I t was ver y exciting to be par t of it ”

When she isn’t dancing or concentrating on her schoolwork, K aci is involved with the Special Olympics Her sister Nicole, who is afflic ted with temporal lobe epilepsy, became involved in the program, which led to K aci attending events and cheering her sister on

“I grew up with the Special Olympics, the young athletes and in an environment of acceptance, ” K aci said “As I got older and became more serious about my dance career I star ted dancing for them as well ”

K aci credits her mother and instruc tors for helping her maintain a positive body image in a field k nown for its issues with weight She maintains a healthy, balanced diet that includes plenty of water, carbohydrates and other foods that help give her the energy she needs One day she hopes to appear in Swan Lake as Odile (the black swan) who has to complete a series of 32 fouette turns en pointe the hardest move in the ballet world

“I love Swan Lake I absolutely love ever ything about the ballet The choreography is beautiful as is the concept Right now, though, I just plan to continue my training Once a dancer has the correc t training, they can do anything!” a

What to Wear

I t ’s the most wonder ful time of the year to get married, that is From the per fec t gown to the cake and ever ything in between, we’re here to show how to plan the stor ybook winter wedding.

First thing’s first: what ’s a winter wedding without the gown that looks like it was made for you?

Tasia Lapp, a manager at Wendy ’s Bridal in For t Wayne, said winter 2018 is all about straps and sleeves, i.e. warmth. Winter calls for think ing about both form and func tion In other words, leave the cold shoulder look for the spring or summer

As far as the details, it ’s time to get spark ly. Lapp said spark les are in so the bride can “shine like snow or snowflakes ” Gold and blush are still go-to colors, she said Deep jewel tones are trending for both bridal and bridesmaids’ gowns

As far as the finishing touches, Lapp said it ’s all about delicate accents Jeweled headbands and finger tip veils are sure to complete the look O verall, she said nothing is really out of style, but some things are mak ing their way back ‘in.’ Fashion rec ycles itself, so don’t be afraid to look to your mother or grandmother ’s wedding photos for inspiration After all, ever ything old is new again!

A Sweet Affair

When it comes to food, the wedding cake tends to be the star of the show Today ’s brides are think ing in terms of quality versus quantity, according to Cour tney Hamm with Cour tney ’s Baker y “ Wedding cakes tend to be a bit smaller than they used to be The average cake is 3 tiers with cupcakes or sheet cakes for additional ser vings Sheet cakes are $1 per ser ving so that cuts cost rather than having 5 or 6 tiers ”

Cupcakes are another way to sweeten the deal, so to speak They are also cost-effec tive and less formal (and messy) than traditional cakes Hamm said flavors run the gamut and var y according to the couple Time of year is another fac tor “ The season plays a big par t in the choices, ” she said “Spring and summer flavors may be lemonblueberr y or strawberr y-lemonade, while fall and winter flavors may be pumpk in spice or caramel apple.” Don’t be afraid to go with standbys, like chocolate and vanilla, too.

And the frosting on the cake? Tex tured frosting rather than per fec tly smooth is still popular, she added Popular colors are gold and blush, which complement the season’s color schemes

Color Me in Love

Speak ing of color, Christine Leto of The Charles said rose gold is having a moment in 2018

“A quick glance through the 2018 colors shows rose gold is by far the most popular color choice for bridesmaids’ dresses, as well as décor, ” she said “Gray continues to be the color of choice for tuxedos and suits for the men, as opposed to the traditional black ”

Rose gold not your thing? Don’t sweat it According to Leto, “second to rose gold is a jewel-toned teal I t is showing up in all the inspiration boards in florals, decor and wardrobe choices ”

Rose gold may be all the rage, but other trends and concepts are passé For example, Leto said navy and coral, the most popular colors used by her couples in 2017, do not appear on any inspiration board for nex t year Too, there are ver y few rustic themed weddings and receptions for 2018 That means ditch the burlap, ladies When in doubt, go for something timeless “I believe classic and elegant is more the theme for our clients (in 2018), ” she said

Your Best Events Await

Flowers introduce another decorative element. Leto said to go with the natural choice literally. “Almost ever y client for 2018 has chosen a more 'natural' theme utilizing florals; especially succulents and interesting, out of the ordinar y greener y for both bouquets and for table décor, such as using greener y for runners ”

Floral decorations may make any table shine, but don’t forget about lighting, whether indoor or outdoor or both. “ Without exception, lighting is of utmost impor tance to our clients, “ she said. “Ever y couple has expressed an interest in both candlelight and soft, romantic strung lights for their weddings and receptions. This is true for both the inside reception and outside ceremony/gathering areas ”

Regardless of direc tion or theme, may your special day be as magical as the first winter snow. a

Custom Wedding Wine Bottles

What better custom detail for your wedding than wine bottles custom-designed for your day?

I t ’s easy. You pick the wine, you pick the label (or design it yourself ) and, voila! Wine bottles are prepared and labeled customized for the bride and groom.

“ We offer a variety of wines for the bride and groom, ” said Jessica Dennis, operations manager at Countr y Heritage Winer y in Laotto. “ The couple may design their own custom labels or selec t from our current array of designs… then we add their personal information to the wine label and they have a personal touch to their special day plus they get to enjoy their favorite wine!”

Custom orders require a 3-week lead time and the cost to do so is just marginally higher than if purchasing the bottles of wine alone (without custom labels). If you’re look ing for a unique idea to customize your own wedding day or perhaps provide a gift for the bride and groom, this might be just the right fit Cheers to wedding bells!

• Does the person or group specialize in weddings? Do they k now the standard flow of a reception, how to emcee and guide the couple and guests through the night ’s events?

• Does the person or group respond to inquiries in a prompt, cour teous and professional manner?

• Do you need more than just reception music? What about the ceremony, cocktail hour and dinner hour?

• Budget 2-4 times more for a band than a DJ You’re hiring a group as opposed to an individual

• Read reviews on the person or group you are considering

• Book early! The best professionals are booked 6-18 months in advance

• In the end, you get what you pay for and if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. a

Kindness Revolution

THE Kindness

It ’s a funny thing, but we often feel we could use more kindness in our lives, and yet, feel unable to prac tice it ourselves It could be that we just misunderstand the roots of kindness: empathy, relationship, concern.

But glo thinks 2018 should be the year of the Kindness Revolution, a year for mak ing compassion a top priority If you’re think ing about joining this revolution, there are two things you’ll need to k now.

First, k indness is not niceness or politeness

I t ’s not the ac t of not being offensive I t ’s not a passive state No, k indness is a loving intrusion I t ’s an ac t of emotional braver y and power ful compassion. “Kindness” and “revolution” go together like halves of a whole because effec tive kindness changes things, turns them around for the better.

The second thing to k now is that k indness is not a reflec tion of your needs, but the response to the needs of others. Kindnesses are any ac ts motivated by compassion, not pity. Compassion says, “I feel your struggle.”

Pity says, “I’m glad I’m not struggling like you are ” Kindness brings us closer to others, pity distances us

So how can you embody true k indness?

How can you join a revolution that spreads compassion? Here are 18 ac ts of k indness you can prac tice in 2018

1

Find something to cr y about, then do something about it. Get emotionally involved in your ac ts of ser vice.

2

26 glo s january 2018 F E A T U R E S | F e a t u r e F o c u s
Prac tice humility by reminding yourself that just as you have secret struggles, so does ever yone else (and I mean ever yone else).

3

Ban self-damning language; embrace self-edifying language. When we feel good about ourselves, we are better at feeling good about others.

4

Stop doing ser vice that makes you feel resentful. Kindness feeds both the person doling it out and the person receiving it, other wise it ’s not kindness at all.

5

Accept that you are loved as you are. Do this with therapy or healthy habits or appealing to a higher power, trusting that you have been created for goodness.

7

8

9

❅ –– ❅ –– ❅ –– ❅ –

Ask someone you don’t know ver y well to share a meal with you.

Relationships breed empathy and empathy breeds kindness.

10

Learn to greet someone in their native language. It shows them you’re sincerely interested in who they are and teaches you to think in culturally new ways.

Be an ac tive listener instead of an advice giver or problem solver. People often need to feel seen and heard, not fixed.

11

Instead of complimenting someone about their looks, compliment them on their ac tions.

“ You really inspire me when you . . . ”

12

It ’s great to donate money, but consider giving your time as well. It ’s an investment in better understanding a c ause you c are about.

13

Be realistic about your volunteer time. O verscheduling usually leads to disappointing the people you meant to help, and feeling disappointed in yourself.

14

S eek face-to-face interac tions as often as possible. Faces are more effec tive than screens at broadc asting people’s emotions.

17

Travel somewhere that will expose you to culturally diverse people. Cultivate the ability to see things differently, a sure way to feed compassion.

15

Consider bar tering your skills for someone else’s. Both par ties feel affirmed in their abilities and satisfied to have been able to trade their exper tise.

18

Tr y to take a deep breath when you feel accused or confronted by someone else’s pain. Give yourself time to reac t to their concerns, not their frustration.

Give honest feedback, even when it ’s difficult. Direc t honesty is more helpful than pretending ever ything is fine.

16

Touch someone when they are hur ting. A hand on the shoulder or a pat on the back shows them that you aren’t afraid of their pain.

Tr y something that someone you love is really enthused about. They will appreciate showing you, not just telling you, about their passions. – ❅ –– ❅ –– ❅ –– ❅ –

Bye-bye winter blues…

Hello, Energized You!

It ’s that time of year : the gloomy cold is a bummer and those New Year ’s resolutions already feel unachievable. No wonder we’re blue.

Don’t lose hear t! Make a resolution list for your mind and soul this year

Sometimes the change we need in life has to come from a deeper place You k now what we mean something more life changing than “organize the closets, ” “lose 12 pounds” and “drink margaritas only one night a week ”

The Mind

I t ’s about positivity As Oprah Winfrey said, "The more you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is in life to celebrate "

Focus on the positives in your life more than the negatives. When negative thoughts arise, think of ac tions you can take now even small ac tions that address your worries Make it a habit to focus on your capabilities

“Rather than being over whelmed by challenges, ” said Cher yl Gigler, of ADD Joy of Life Coaching, “focus on developing your strengths

We all face challenges But we all have strengths, too ”

While Gigler ’s coaching is focused on those living with ADD/ADHD, her advice applies to anyone living a hec tic modern life

[Note: If you suspec t ADD/ADHD, it ’s impor tant to get a diagnosis. “I t ’s called a ‘rule out ’ diagnosis, ” explained Gigler. “Star t with a physical to rule out physical problems, like low thyroid. Then a psychologist or psychiatrist can determine if

“Coaching focuses on ‘where do you want to go, and what ’s getting in the way?, ’” said Gigler “ We dial-in on what ’s going wrong, and what ’s needed to get through that refining life sk ills, determining types of suppor t needed, etc.”

“An ADD diagnosis, like many challenges in life, can be a hit to your self-image, ” Gigler explained “Having a challenge in your life is not a moral failing You are a unique individual with talents, strengths and abilities.”

“Connec tion is the V itamin C of life, ” she continued “ With the right suppor t, you can do anything ” Connec t with others through suppor t groups, colleagues, friends and family And connec t with yourself.

The Soul

A calm soul helps you weather the toughest of days Yoga, while excellent for the body, also “aligns us back into a harmonious state with our true nature, ” said Dani McGuire, owner of Pranayoga and author of SattaLight: Seated in Light (to be published spring 2018).

McGuire explained, “‘ Yoga’ comes from the Sansk rit ‘yuj, ’ meaning to yoke together Yoga is as alive and changing as we are. Some view yoga as the prac tice of physical postures. Some say yoga is about the work ings of the mind. Yoga is all of these. Like a mirror, yoga will reflec t different meanings along the way as you transform through prac tice ”

Meditation and mindfulness are other prac tices proven to strengthen the soul. There are differences between the two prac tices, but they also overlap In a nutshell, meditation is the prac tice

of setting aside time to focus on clearing the mind. M indfulness is constantly attuning yourself to the Now, and includes prac ticing mindful meditation. Consider exploring both a little deeper and decide which works best for you.

Me Time

De-stress and re-energize with ac tivities that are relaxing and good for mind, body and soul. (Instead of the “me time” that involves a par tysize bag of potato chips and the T V remote.)

Enjoy spa time. Kelly Kreisher, esthetician with Mark of Distinc tion Aveda Salon and Spa, suggested, “For a New Year ’s sk in refresh, I recommend our V itamin C facial treatment. V itamin C is amazing for sk in, ” she said “I t stimulates collagen produc tion to reduce and prevent signs of aging sk in Our V itamin C Treatment Serum stays ac tive on your sk in for five days it ’s another reason I love it!”

Too, treating yourself to a massage should never be considered an indulgence “ The power of touch is so amazingly beneficial to both body and spirit, ” said Kreisher “Any amount of time is beneficial, from a quick 30-minute session to up to 2 hours ”

Be good to yourself Be a better you “I t ’s never too late to be what you might have been ” –George Eliot a

One Thing at a Time Declutter Your Life

Last year, approximately 33,230,420 people took to the ‘net to find answers on how to clean up the clutter in their lives.“Getting organized” ranked second in Google searches, but how many found what they were looking for and ac tually followed it? Statistics show that 80 percent of people’s good intentions for the New Year t ypically fail by the end of Februar y.

Why is that?

Psychology professor Peter Herman has identified what he coins as the “false hope syndrome, ” which means people’s resolutions are “significantly unrealistic and out of alignment with their internal view of themselves.” In other words, in order to succeed in mak ing life changes, one has to consistently prac tice positive self-affirmation If you don’t really believe what you’re telling yourself, you’ll miss your goal and fur ther damage your self-esteem

Ouch.

So this year, we will focus on not only getting rid of the ex tra junk in our lives, but by doing so in super-simple, fail-proof ways that will leave us feeling triumphant all year long

Fill ONE trash bag. Make a game of it! S ee how quickly you can fill it up

Designate ONE spot for incoming papers. For many of us, papers make up a majorit y of our mess. By picking one place to put them, you’ll be instantly preventing a common pitfall

Create ONE clutter-free zone. This one area can be a counter, kitchen table, etc where nothing can be placed that isn’t being used. Then, each day, expand it out a little more until that noclutter zone covers the entire house

Tackle ONE drawer, c abinet, shelf, etc. at a time. Sor t each by 1) stuff that belongs there, 2) stuff that belongs elsewhere, and 3) stuff to get rid of.

Make ONE clutter-dumping trip each week. Take your donations, rec yclables and trash to their respec tive places to quickly lose that clutter weight

Give away ONE item each day.

Colleen Madsen, author of the blog 365 Less Things, has experienced quite a transformation simply by reducing her stuff one day at a time

Creative Closets

Want to do something really cool with your closets once you’ve cleaned them? Tr y turning them into living spaces! These ideas can get you star ted

Smart about style

Pick one projec t a week. You might find that by limiting your load you’ll ac tually look for ward to projec t day more. Google-ing and Pinterest-ing creative organizational ideas can be a lot of fun

Pick one room a month. Dedicating ample time and focusing on each room will lower stress levels and ensure a thorough job is done

Give one room to a professional. The key to keeping stress at bay while tackling clutter is to not bite off more than you can chew. Assigning your most taxing room to a professional will lighten your load, and who knows you might learn some new tricks in the process.

Devote a few minutes once a day to de-cluttering. Give yourself a sense of achievement ever y single day by keeping up with your new organizational system, because no one has time to redo it all a month later

Create a Richly Blessed 2018

Invest in yourself

New year, new fresh star t! Januar y is a great time to make positive changes in ever y aspec t of your life whether it be a resolution to exercise more, work harder or save more money, this is the time for improvements. One way to do that is to reevaluate your finances in order to save and invest for your future.

Budgeting 101

Brittainy Chaffee, private banker at Star Financial Bank, suggests getting a jump on setting a budget for yourself and sor ting through the things you want to accomplish, no matter your stage in life or career. “Star t now, ” she advised. “ While it is easy to procrastinate budgeting, your first step is to write down the goal you are hoping to achieve. Do you want to pay off your debt? Write it down and determine your current spending with the income you are bringing in Do you want to build on your retirement savings? Pay yourself first The main thing with budgeting is to be sure to be honest with yourself and give yourself flexibility Each month there are expenses that are seasonal, like snow removal and Christmas gifts in the winter and vacation in the spring ”

Devote Time to Your Finances

When people begin think ing more seriously about their financial situation, there are common mistakes to avoid, such as not spending adequate time reviewing your finances Reach out to your financial advisor or banker to assess your

situation “ Too often we consider ourselves too busy to devote time to our finances, ” said Chaffee “Not devoting time to your finances can be costly Find someone whom you trust to work with, especially when you have life changes like a new job, marriage, children, divorce or retirement. These are all impor tant times to review your overall financial pic ture. Do you k now your banker's name and do they k now yours? These all are impor tant questions to consider when planning for your financial future ”

Have an Individualized Plan

When managing your household’s finances, it is impor tant to have a plan, whether you are the primar y person or your spouse is For example, if one spouse or par tner is the primar y breadwinner and manages the finances, the other person needs to k now how to do it as well, even if it doesn’t seem necessar y Life changes, and it is impor tant to be familiar with what ’s happening with your household’s finances “I t is impor tant that you are familiar with where documents are, how bills are paid, and who at the

bank can help you or your spouse if something were to happen to you, ” said Chaffee “Consider the type of legac y you want to leave and put that plan in place ”

Another consideration is what your long- and shor t-term goals are Do you have children going to college soon? Are you or your spouse planning to retire? Are you interested in investing in the stock market? I t ’s impor tant to have a financial professional who k nows what you wish to accomplish by managing your money. “ You are an individual even when it comes to your finances, ” said Chaffee. “Goals var y from person to person. Work with someone whom you trust and does what is right for you.”

The best financial investment this year? I t ’s in you. a

Happy New Year from PSI

Before work ing at Plastic Surger y Innovations (PSI), I often asked Dr. Joe (also my husband) upon coming home how his day was

He often would just say, “surger y, surger y, surger y, ” after a long day Then when he asked me to help star t and be par t of the PSI team, I had a closer look of what a ‘day in the life of Dr. Joe’ was really like. I saw how he impac ted positive outcomes in people’s lives, promoted their wellbeing and, at times, made critical care life and death decisions.

I saw the long and sometimes arduous surger y days from an inside view and how busy the schedule could be managing so many patients in a day. I saw first-hand how compassionate, k ind and caring he was to his patients. I t was no longer “surger y, surger y, surger y.” I met his patients, learned their stories, and saw their before-and-after outcomes.

Margaret was PSI’s ver y first patient to walk through the door on Sept 25, 2006 She arrived in a wheelchair accompanied by her family and was being seen for sk in cancers She became ver y endeared to PSI over the years Margaret passed away this last year and she will be missed and remembered.

But for ever y patient, like Margaret, we embrace him or her, unique to themselves, not a diagnosis, not a number. We strive for the best patient care ser vice, treating each patient individually.

I am proud to be par t of the PSI team And each PSI member is unique in themselves and what they bring to the team O f all my professional positions from med-surg to critical care to research and hyperbaric medicine, to neuro rehab team coordinator to case manager to national lec turer for a clinical prac tice model, to private duty for a prime minister ’s wife and to my present role at PSI, I can say it has evolved into a position of great learning and growth and my all-time favorite!

But I am just a cog in the wheel I t takes ever y member of the PSI team to make it successful We have seen tremendous growth and change over the last 11 years since Plastic Surger y Innovations’ inception And after 11 years, it is still growing, changing, evolving and going strong Thank you, Dr. Joe, for ask ing me to be par t of the PSI’s dream team. I t truly has been an honor and a privilege And without you, it would be nothing You are the vital piece to it all
