Can a human being really die from not having any sleep? Or, from not being able to dream at night?
Scientists from around the world are studying these fascinating questions, and their amazing answers just may shock you out of your socks!
TOTAL SLEEP DEPRIVATION
CAN KILL ANIMALS. Scientists know that no sleep can kill ani-
mals. Rats, for example, will die from total lack of sleep between 11 and 32 days.
Larger animals, such as dogs, will die after 9 to 17 days without any sleep. (Note: it is critically important to clarify “total non-sleep” from the casual non-scientific condition of “virtually no sleep at all.”)
CAN A HUMAN BEING DIE
FROM LACK OF SLEEP? International studies from “sleep scientists” have clearly shown, without
question, that “yes” human beings can and have, already, died from (total) sleep deprivation. A very rare sleep disorder, medically classified as “Fatal Familial Insomnia” has already proved this, beyond any doubt. This rare genetic sleep disorder – so far, has no known cure and (as the “fatal” portion of its clinical name implies) always leads to eventual death with the patient. As the foremost medical specialists state: “There is currently no cure for fatal familial insomnia (FFI) or treatment that can slow the disease progression.”
This terminal malady is extremely rare and is caused by a specific disease in the human brain which prevents sleep.
Fatal familial insomnia is called a rare “prion disease” in the brain which causes complete lack of sleep which, in turn, causes damage to the part of the brain known as the thalamus. The spinal cord is impacted with “the disruption of critical functions.” In short, the sleepless disease hits the human nervous system and impairs essential brain functions.
Sleep from page 1
The FFI gene which prevents sleep is called the PRNP gene and it eventually “eats” holes in the brain, giving it a “sponge-like appearance.”
This “sleepless” disorder causes the human body to trigger all these fatal reactions.
As experts are quick to point out, even without this specific fatal familial insomnia disease, any extreme cases of prolonged sleep deprivation can cause: “Eventual damage to the heart, lungs, metabolism, kidneys, and brain function. Any intense sleep deprivation may trigger diabetes, heart disease, and even certain forms of cancer.” (This is discussed in greater detail later in this article.)
Though no human being has been known to die from “forced” or “intentional wakefulness,” all experts agree that, “Complete inability to sleep will eventually cause critical body organs to grossly malfunction (as cited above) which will lead to eventual death.”
HOW LONG CAN A PERSON SURVIVE WITHOUT SLEEP?
The above mentioned disease called fatal familial insomnia occurs in 4 stages and can last between 7 and 36 months before death. However, not all four stages are truly without complete

A True Story . . No, Really . . .
A frog goes into a bank and approaches the teller. He can see from her nameplate that her name is Patty Whack.
“Miss Whack, I’d like to get a $30,000 loan to take a holiday.”
Patty looks at the frog in disbelief and asks his name. The frog says his name is Kermit Jagger, his dad is Mick Jagger, and that it’s okay, he knows the bank manager.
sleep. It is during the 4th and final stage that dementia (or senility) sets-in and the patient becomes unresponsive or mute, and death follows.
Actual length of time preceding death when the patient cannot succumb to sleep is uncertain since even patients afflicted with this disease still have “slivers of time when they slip in-and-out of a type of twilight sleep,” say researchers. However, stage 4 eventually makes sleep totally impossible (even without any “twilight” or “slivers” of sleep-time, mentioned above). For the average person, (total and complete) sleep deprivation (which has been confirmed by reliable and scientifically-monitored conditions) can last – on average – up to (but not limited to) 32 days before death occurs. The average survival time for patients diagnosed with fatal familial insomnia (FFI) (including all 4 stages) is 18 months.
Note: If only one parent has the FFI gene, the offspring have a 50% risk of inheriting and developing the disease.
CLAIMS OF PEOPLE NOT SLEEPING FOR YEARS DEBUNKED. Newspapers periodically print sensationalized claims of people stating that they have not slept in years. Such ridiculous claims have been a “gullible carrot” for the very naïve to diet on and believe.
However, these outlandish claims of people not sleeping for years
Patty explains that he will need to secure the loan with some collateral.
The frog says, “Sure. I have this,” and produces a tiny porcelain elephant, about an inch tall, bright pink and perfectly formed.
Very confused, Patty explains that she’ll have to consult with the bank manager and disappears into a back office.
She finds the manager and says, “There’s a frog called Kermit Jagger out there who claims to know you and wants to borrow $30,000, and he wants to use this as collateral.” She holds up the tiny pink elephant. “I mean, what in the world is this?”
The bank manager looks back at her and says, “It’s a knickknack, Patty Whack. Give the frog a loan. His old man’s a Rolling Stone.”
(You sang it, didn’t you? Yeah, I know you did.)
A Dog’s Diary
5:30am: Started the day as a hero! When the sound of the newspaper
have never been scientific verified and, therefore, are not given “sober consideration” by the legitimate scientific community (who find such tales to be amusing, at best).
AL HERPIN, THE MAN WHO NEVER SLEPT. One amusing example that sold many newspapers was the story of a Mr. Al Herpin of Trenton, New Jersey, who became known as “The Man Who Never Slept.” On February 29, 1904, the New York Times reported that Herpin had not slept a wink in over 10 years!
Discrepancies in the story began to occur under scrutiny and Al Herpin admitted that he took “rest periods,” but never dozed off. Later, these accounts of “rest periods” later translated to short naps. Further inconsistencies surfaced when the mysterious recluse died on January 3, 1947 when his age at death was given as 94. As reported in the same New York Times at the time of Herpin’s death: “This is inconsistent with the previous assertion that he was born in 1862.” Simple math shows that if he died at age 94 his death wouldn’t come until the year 1956.
Other discrepancies regarding his claim of not sleeping a wink in years also have discredited him.
VIETNAMESE MAN SAYS HE HASN’T SLEPT IN 47 YEARS. Aside from the fanciful tales of Al Herpin “The Man Who Never Slept,” there have been count-
hitting the driveway roused me from my deep slumber -- the impact indicating the paper was much heavier than normal -- I realized that no one in the house was yet awake! I roused my master by licking him in the face. He appeared very angry with himself for having overslept, shouting and waving his arms. His ill temper even seemed directed at me a bit, which is silly since it is I who saved him from being fired. Funny thing though: He didn’t go into work, but spent the morning leafing through the large newspaper and drinking coffee. He seems to do this once a week, and I don’t know why.
7:30am: Invaders! The people who live next door came out into their yard, obviously getting ready to lay siege to our house. Snarling and barking, I let them know in no uncertain terms that I was prepared to tear them from limb to limb it they came any closer, and was able to repel the invasion. This is an almost daily occurrence; you’d think they’d learn. My master added his voice to the fray as well, yelling angrily. I am sure the people couldn’t hear him, but it was nice of him to lend his support.
less other hoaxes, such as Thai Ngoc, the legendary Vietnamese man who claimed to have stayed awake for an astounding 47 years! (Move over Rip Van Winkle, this man renders you a mere cat-napper.) Though widely reported by the Vietnamese news organizations, the storyline was amusingly picked up by various American newspapers as “fluff” pieces and “humorous slices” at best, and not intended to be taken seriously by its readership.
In the case of Thai Ngoc, medical specialists and dream research scientists who are familiar with the case, remain skeptical while claiming that, “Ngoc is actually sleeping, he just doesn’t know it.” In addition, San Diego County’s own world-renowned medical specialist, Dr. Ashish K. Wadhwa of Poway, California, states: “Some insomniacs can’t tell the difference between sleeping and being awake and engage in very brief ‘micro-naps’ throughout the day.” The world-respected Dr. Wadhwa, who has no less than 5 hospital affiliations, including 3 in North San Diego County (Pomerado Hospital in Poway, Tri-City Medical Center at Oceanside, and Palomar Medical Center in our own Escondido area) suspects in the case of Thai Ngoc: “The subject may feel that they are merely resting when in actuality they are sleeping.” Dr. Wadhwa further explains, “They

10:00am: I was forced to move, as the patch of sun in which I was lying had, for some reason, slid over a few feet. It’s not easy being a dog.
1:00pm: I have the most thoughtful master in the world! While it’s true he left me alone in the house for several hours, he did set out a treat for me on the kitchen counter. It was even gift-wrapped, a courtesy I wish he’d skipped, since it led to me having a lot of plastic in my teeth. The roast was delicious, though frozen in the center. I don’t want to seem ungrateful, but crunching through two inches of rock-hard beef is hardly my idea of a delicacy.
2:00pm: Most unpleasant experience when my master returned home and was furious that I had not eaten the plastic wrap which had been covering my present. He kept pointing at the small pieces of Styrofoam and other debris and raving in a most irrational fashion. I’m sorry, but he should know that
Sleep from page 2
may also be having micro-naps –very short naps lasting minutes.” (Dr. Ashish K. Wadhwa is also currently the Chief of Surgery at Pomerado Hospital.)
Thai Ngoc’s celebrity in his Vietnamese culture was widely reported by the world media as only a ‘curiosity piece,’ in the same manner that National Geographic recognizes and reports a primitive culture’s belief-system, religious ceremonies, or cultural heroes. However, today’s global internet (outside the scientific community) continues to perpetuate and give ‘new life’ to these unverified, mythical claims of Thai Ngoc, Vietnam’s legendary man who had no shuteye for nearly a half century!
There are numerous other examples, such as “The Russian Sleep Experiment” of the 1940s, and the Frenchman who “virtually” did not sleep for several months. (“Virtually” is defined as “almost” or “nearly.”) Therefore, the Frenchman “almost never slept” within those several months. All of which places these, and many other, examples into the non-scientific “hoax category.”
Nevertheless, these stories prove irresistible fodder for the unsophisticated mind and, consequently, such tales continue to find new life-blood in the current pop culture, via the ever-popular internet.
BRITISH WOMAN CLAIMS “NON-SLEEP” WORLD RECORD. Though not recognized nor recorded by the Guinness Book of World Records, an English woman named Maureen Weston in eastern England claimed to have stayed awake for over 14 days (449 hours) in 1977.
SAN DIEGAN MAKES WORLD HEADLINES. San Diego’s own Randy Gardner made world news when he was only 16 years old. In 1965, Randy Gardner was a Point Loma High School student when he set a then-world record of staying awake for 264.4 hours (11 days, 25 minutes). Gardner never officially made it into the Guinness Book of World Records because as he stated: “I did not get listed in Guinness Book of World Records as I missed the publication deadline.” Nevertheless, the San Diego resident still is a title holder in some respects, since other alleged record holders such as Toimi Soini of Hamina, Finland and Maureen Weston of England (both previously mentioned) did not match up with Gardner’s
level of “official scientific verification.” Unlike others who have since claimed the crown for staying awake longer, Randy Gardner’s record-setting event back in 1965 was scrutinized by higher scientific rigors put into place by the world’s foremost authority on sleep: Dr. William C. Dement of Stanford University. Dr. Dement, personally, monitored and had the most robust guidelines for 16year-old San Diegan, Randy Gardner. Other socalled title-holders of sleep deprivation never came close to meeting the standards of the legendary American sleep researcher, William Charles Dement – known as the ‘Father of Sleep Medicine’ and founder of the Sleep Research Center. Other record-holders would, conceivably, fail Dr. Dement’s higher standards of confir-mation. Unlike other alleged non-sleep title holders, San Diego teenager, Randy Gardner, did not employ any stimulants of any kind to keep him awake. Gardner did not even drink coffee!
But far more importantly, even trained medical personnel in sleep research often turn to the world’s foremost authority, Dr. Dement, for updated guidelines. For example, many so-called ‘non-sleep record holders’ were never verified by the world’s highest standards as they should have been. Says Dr. Dement: “The overall problem with determining the record for staying awake longer is what is scientifically referred to as ‘twilight sleep’ or ‘micro-sleep’ – when the subject is actually getting short ‘bursts’ of actual sleep which is not noticed by either the subject or the researchers monitoring the event.” In essence, the subjects are occasionally lapsing into “slivers of sleep,” even though it may not seem that way. As experts admonish, “To really determine if a person has been constantly awake you need to record their brainwaves throughout the experiment.”
Many people who have claimed the crown for staying awake longer, such as Tony Wright on May 25, 2007, merely used a 24-hour video camera for documentation. Such feeble and unscientific guidelines (24-hour video camera on the subject) are not granted serious consideration.
NON-SLEEP MARATHONS CAN BE DANGEROUS. Record-holders for staying awake

Danny Nunez pleaded guilty in federal court today, admitting that he supplied the fentanyl that caused the death of a 25-year-old San Diego woman identified in court records as “L.P.” on September 11, 2024.
According to the plea agreement, on September 12, 2024, the young woman’s parents found her deceased in her bedroom. Cell phone evidence and witness statements show that the victim purchased fentanyl from the defendant on September 11, 2024, which she later consumed, resulting in her death.
On October 3, 2024, members of the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) San Diego – Fentanyl Abatement and Suppression Team(FAST), in conjunction with the Escondido Police Department, conducted an enforcement operation resulting in the arrest of the defendant after he attempted to sell two baggies of fentanyl, weighing 7.67 grams and 1.23 grams, to undercover agents.
Nunez is scheduled to be sentenced on May 19, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. before U.S. District Court Judge Thomas J. Whelan.
This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Sean Van Demark.

wild and crazy party girls to spend the day, with the admonition that they have to be out of the house by 6pm so Ms. Davis doesn’t have any clue of what an exciting party animal I am when she goes out for a visit with her sisters.
Oh, I know what you’re thinking. “That lyle . . . what an exciting, funfilled, adventurous life he leads. Glamour every day, surrounded by beautiful women, living in a beautiful mansion, mixing with the elite and powerful . .”
And, of course, you are correct in your thoughts.
This sometimes makes it incredibly hard to remain humble. I try my best, however, to occasionally mix with common folk. It is tough, of course, to come down from my very comfortable ivory tower.
When I’m with ordinary people (as opposed to the elite) I talk about mundane things (rather than solve the world’s diplomatic, military, and economic problems, for example . . . )

4:00pm: Spent the afternoon with the girls. A most productive day; I was able to mark territory for two blocks. “Drip ‘til you drop” is our motto. We had a small snack at an outdoor cafe we like, with meat scraps and bread served out of circular containers with easily displaced lids. Ran into that rogue Sebastian, who lifted his leg with irritating nonchalance -- does he think I don’t know about his obsession with Muffy, that snotty schnauzer from down the road? Last month there wasn’t a male in the neighborhood who couldn’t be found outside her fence, and Sebastian was at the head of the pack. I let him know I want nothing more to do with him.
5:00pm: What a treat! On the way home a flock of ravens drew my attention to a squirrel that had been flattened by an automobile. After several days in the sun, the aroma was so delicious it made my nose quiver. I rolled in the wondrous fragrance for several minutes, and when I stood up I positively radiated eau de roadkill. Let Sebastian drool over Muffy -- he doesn’t know what he’s missing.

Do you ever notice how nice and warm and snuggly your bed feels on a rainy day? Hearing the pittypat of raindrops on the roof? And you melt into the warmth of the covers and maybe drift back off to sleep? It’s one of the most romantic times I can recall . . . the sound of rain falling on the roof and the windows. Not too romantic this morning, however. As I may have mentioned, Ms. Davis has left me. For a visit with her sisters!

we did have some hard rain yesterday. The day before it was a quiet, gentle rain. Yesterday, for about a good half hour, the rain was pelting down hard. Still, I got to the car, a wee bit on the damp side, and drove across town to make a bank deposit. When I got to the bank . . . probably not more than three miles from our home ... there was only a light mist. often put themselves at great medical risks. Such was the case with New York radio disc jockey, Peter Tripp, who attempted to stay awake as a promotional stunt in 1959. Working non-stop on the radio to benefit the March of Dimes, Tripp sat in a glass booth in Times Square, broadcasting for WMGM in New York City. He spent 201 sleepless hours (and 10 minutes) playing records and talking ‘live’ on the microphone three hours of the day. After a while he began to hallucinate, which is a common symptom of sleep-deprivation subjects. After three days, Tripp began laughing hysterically for no reason, sometimes becoming upset, confused, and deeply paranoid. After the stunt had officially ended, Peter Tripp clinically became psychotic. Later he would frantically search through his radio office drawers looking for non-existent money. He accused one radio technician of trying to do him bodily harm. He eventually claimed he was not Peter Tripp, the New York radio personality, but, an imposter!
Nothing made sense to him afterward. Sadly, there were permanent damages that set in after his nonsleep marathon. Depression set in, he fought viciously with his boss, became involved with the Payola scandal and was finally fired from his job. His family often stated that the 8-day non-sleep promotion left Peter Tripp permanently damaged. The once-popular New York disc jockey passed away in
California on January 31, 2000. He death came at age 73, following a stroke, leaving two sons and two daughters. His 4 marriages all crashed in divorce.
RISK OF PERMANENT DAM-
AGE. Extreme lack of sleep, whether intentional or not, can medically damage the human body, permanently. Not getting enough sleep over a period of time can trigger serious medical conditions by lowering your immune system and creating a greater chance of bacterial diseases, as well as a greater risk for heart disease, and high blood pressure. Neglecting your normal hours of sleep – even without going for a world record – can seriously endanger the average person.
Long periods without normal, adequate sleep can make your body release higher levels of insulin after you eat. Insulin controls your blood sugar level. Higher insulin levels promote fat storage and increases your risk for Type 2 diabetes!
Prolong sleep deprivation also causes the body to increase ‘cortisol’ (a stress hormone) -- which, in turn, can lead to a deadly heart attack or even a life-long paralyzing stroke!
GUINNESS BOOK OF WORLD RECORDS STOPS LIST. Because of the possible danger of medical ‘after-effects’ from people who attempt to stay awake to set world records, the Guinness Book of World Records no longer recognizes this “category of sleep deprivation.”

Previous record-holder, Toimi Soini of Finland, who allegedly stayed totally awake for 11 ½ consecutive days (276 hours) –was removed from the Guinness Book of Records in 1989, for the following reasons: “It was deleted on the grounds that it could encourage records harmful to health and was unverifiable because of the claims of insomnia sufferers.” (Toimi Soini was listed as having set the sleep deprivation record in February of 1964.)
At one time, dreams were thought to be nonsensical and completely unimportant to our survival. Today that view has been greatly changed! While sleep, itself, is important to our survival, so the same came be said of dreams! Dreams are necessary for the human brain not to shut down at night when we are dead asleep!
During the day, our brain is constantly stimulated, and constantly processing everything we see, touch, smell, taste, or even just think about. Also, everything we feel inside of ourselves, all our emotions, like our fears, our happiness, our anger, our laughing, well, every possible human experience – is all processed, filtered, and interpreted by the human brain.
The human brain is the most complicated of all computers! It allows us to not only touch, see, feel, experience, but, it gives orders for our muscles to move, reach, run, jump or sit down.
However, unlike your laptop or desk computer terminal, you cannot turn the switch “off” to your brain when you’re done working or sleeping – if you did, you would die! No electrical brain waves, no EEG activity, and you flat line – you’re officially pronounced dead! So, how do dreams keep our brains from shutting off at night when we are sleep? When we are sleeping and our eyes, ears, and other senses have no pictures, sound, scenery or people to process, the brain’s activity-level plunges to a dangerous low.
Today’s smart science is striving to keep up with the revolutionary advances into how dreams keep our physical brain from shutting down at night when it “has nothing to do.”
Obviously, the brain stays active during sleep, but, nowhere near the same level as when a person is awake.
Therefore, the brain (must) be kept ‘entertained’ and ‘fully-engaged’ on a higher frequency level -- or it may ‘turn off.’
This is where dreams come into play.
Dreams are the brain’s own survival tactics to stay alive, to stay ‘turned on.’ When we are sleeping, the brain has to (must) stay active, stay alert, stay ‘turned on’ – so it protects itself from shutting

California is one of the most expensive places to livein the country. Every time you fill up your gas tank, buy groceries, or pay your utility bills, you feel it. It’s becoming harder and harder just to afford to live here.
It doesn’t have to be this way. But instead of easingthe burden on hardworking families, incompetent politicians have grown the size of government and made a choice—illegal immigrants receive more than the taxpayers funding this state.
A California Department of Finance official recently revealed that taxpayers are footing a $9.5 billion bill this year to provide healthcare for illegal immigrants. That’s $9.5 billion taken from your hard-
earned money and handed over to people who are here illegally, while families struggle to pay rent and seniors worry about their retirement.
Meanwhile, California is facing a $68 billion deficit—a crisis fueled by reckless spending and mismanagement. Instead of taking responsibility, cutting waste, and prioritizing the people they were elected to serve, state politicians are doubling down. They aren’t making the tough choices to support working families, small businesses, or the seniors who built this state. Instead, they’re prioritizing people who broke our laws to be here.
There isn’t enough money to fund every program theywant, so they had a choice—support
struggling families, or funnel billions to illegal immigrants. They chose the latter. That’s wrong, and they must be held accountable.
California’s elected officials should be working for you— the taxpayers who fund their salaries and the services we all rely on. It’s time to demand better. If your representatives aren’t fighting for you, they don’t deserveyour vote.
It’s time to stand up and say enough is enough.California must put its citizens first.

Do you want to pay more in taxes? I don’t think so. Yet, one of my colleagues is looking at adding a tax increase to the ballot. This is happening at a time when San Diego is already one of the most expensive places to live, and people are being forced out due to rising costs.
The reality is that the County of San Diego expects a $138.5 million budget shortfall in the upcoming fiscal year, and it is expected to grow to $321.8 million in five years. Much of that is due to a bloated bureaucracy and new programs that haven’t helped most San Diegans.
Next meeting, my colleague is proposing to hire a consultant for $400,000 to tell us whether we should pay more taxes... I can tell you, for free, we don’t. We don’t need a $400,000 consultant to tell us that San Diegans don’t want to pay additional taxes. The cost of living is already too high, and we do not have a revenue problem— we have a spending problem.
In fact, the upcoming budget estimates that County will already receive more than $80 million in increased revenue through property taxes next year.
Instead of hiring a consultant or conducting another study, we need to tighten our belt and manage spending in-house. We already have sustainable funding sources, such as property tax and sales tax. The real issue is that the County workforce increased by 2,500 new positions over the last few years and created new departments that we simply cannot afford.
While this is just in its infancy, I want to let you know that I am go-
ing to stay on this and fight to make sure our county doesn’t become even more expensive. Government should get its house in order, not put the burden on taxpayers to fork over more of their hard-earned money. I trust our County leadership and this Board’s ability to make the necessary adjustments without additional costs to taxpayers.
We need to focus on responsible fiscal management, not more government waste.

Someone is already occupying Elizabeth Kimpel’s Vrbo rental. Why won’t the company refund her stay?
Q: My family booked a condo in downtown Toronto through Vrbo recently. Just before we arrived, we received a text that our reserved condo had plumbing issues and that they had assigned us another rental in a different building.
When we tried to check in, we found the unit appeared to be occupied by another guest. There were toiletries in the bathrooms, clothes in the closets and food on the table. We immediately notified the manager. His advice was to lock ourselves inside the condo and that they would send a cleaner. I considered this an unsafe suggestion.
Also, the condo wasn’t the equivalent to the one we had originally reserved -- it was smaller and had one less bathroom than the original condo.
The manager insisted that we return to the property and promised to clean it. But we didn’t trust him, so we returned the key to the concierge and found a different place to stay. We texted the manager asking for a refund. The manager replied that my husband had been abusive and that they would not refund the money. Can you help me get our $2,356 back, please?
~ Elizabeth Kimpel, Potomac, Md.
A: Vrbo should have offered you a full refund when it couldn’t provide the rental you had reserved.
Vrbo has a Book With Confidence guarantee that says if your prop-
erty is “materially misrepresented” in the listing, it will help you book a replacement.
So what went wrong here? It looks like you worked with the property manager on the rental swap. When you needed help, you reached out to Vrbo in writing, but Vrbo just contacted the property manager for a resolution.
This isn’t surprising. Vrbo sees itself as a platform -- an intermediary between the renter and the rental manager -- and only wants to get involved when it collects its fees. Apart from that, Vrbo usually sides with the rental managers, who are its real customers.
In reviewing the correspondence
between you, the manager and Vrbo, I don’t see any evidence that your husband was abusive. If anything, you were polite and direct. You just wanted what Vrbo had promised. Not a smaller apartment and not a condo that was already occupied.
You could have sent a brief, polite email to one of the company’s executives, asking for another review of your case. I publish the names, numbers and email addresses of the Vrbo executives on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org.
Here’s my take on what should have happened. Instead of referring you back to the condo manager, Vrbo should have found you a comparable rental quickly. That

would have fixed the problem and ensured your family had a positive experience using the rental platform. Clearly, Vrbo did not take its Book With Confidence guarantee seriously in your case. It can do better.
I contacted Vrbo on your behalf. It apologized and refunded the $2,356 you spent on the occupied condo.

The Poway Symphony Orchestra is thrilled to announce its upcoming concert, “Echoes of Romance,” on Sunday, March 23, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts. This program features works by Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky and Mozart, promising an unforgettable afternoon of beautiful symphonic music.
The concert will open with the lively Polonaise from Eugene Onegin by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, a spirited and elegant piece full of Russian grandeur. It will be followed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Symphony No. 39, a light and uplifting work that conveys the composer’s genius in every note.
The highlight of the afternoon will be Sergei Rachmaninoff’s breathtaking Piano Concerto No. 3 —the “Rach 3”— a virtuosic tour de force renowned for its emotional depth and technical challenges. Acclaimed pianist Frederick Moyer will join the orchestra as the featured soloist, bringing his artistry and extraordinary skill to one of the most celebrated (and difficult) piano concertos in classical music.

down by occasionally replaying images, pictures, memories, people, everything we experience in our waking life in the form of dreams. So say the world’s leading authorities on dreams and the human brain, such as worldrenowned neuroscientist, Mark Solms, best known for his discovery of the forebrain mechanisms of dreaming and, reputedly, the first person to term the phrase “neuropsychoanalysis.”
According to Dr. Solms, dreams keep the brain occupied: “Dreaming does for the brain what Saturday morning cartoons do for the kids. Dreams keep the brain occupied and entertained, while the ‘outside’ world is shut down during sleep.” The human brain must continually multi-task, working with the heart, nervous system, etc. As Dr. Solms explains, “So, when we are unconscious (sleeping), the brain manufactures and creates ‘mental pictures and sounds’ during dreaming so that it (the brain) can remain fully active and remain stimulated and ‘entertained’ while in a dormant state. In a sense, the brain goes

I’m especially delighted to present the ‘Rach 3’ — the first time our Orchestra has performed this stunning piece. It requires a soloist with exceptional technique and power, and Fred Moyer is truly brilliant. It’s going to be an absolutely beautiful concert that you won’t want to miss. And you can expect a few surprises, too!”
Always an audience favorite, Moyer will be making his third appearance with the Poway Symphony Orchestra. For over 40 years, he has dazzled audiences across the

DOES EVERYONE DREAM?
We often hear people say “I never dream,” or “I hardly ever dream.”
The truth of the matter is that everybody dreams every night, without exception. The reason many of us insist that we never, or hardly ever, dream is because many of us don’t remember them! As research scientists put it: “Since dreams occur in the subconscious level of our minds, they sometimes ‘evaporate’ before they are picked up by our (conscious level) memory when we awake.”
Some of us, however, recall our dreams quite vividly.
Regardless, everyone dreams, multiple times, every night.
The human subconscious, where all dreams take place, is a reservoir of almost everything we have learned or experienced in life. Under hypnosis, older people can often remember, with perfect clarity, events from 50 years before! A person’s unconscious memory

HOW LONG DO DREAMS LAST? Another very popular myth is that all dreams only last a few seconds.
According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, the average person may dream a total of one to two hours per night! And our individual dream episodes may last anywhere from a few fleeting seconds to 45 minutes or longer!
DREAMS OFTEN SOLVE PROBLEMS One of the more fascinating aspects of dreams is that the brain sometimes continues to work through complicated problems and ‘projects’ while in the state of dreaming.

Travel has always been loud -- but never this loud.
From the roar of jet engines to the constant construction noise at hotels, it’s hard to find a moment of peace on the road.
“The noise is becoming problematic,” says Malia Everette, who called me from a hotel in Oaxaca, Mexico, during a raucous street festival. “It’s especially bad during high season. The traffic is loud. The people are out on the street having the time of their lives. And you can’t sleep because you hear booming music.”
Everette ought to know. She runs a tour company and has to deal not only with noise but also with noise complaints from her customers.
Her go-to travel advice lately: “Pack some quality earplugs.”
Interestingly, a recent survey by JBL finds that 75 percent of Americans think earbuds and headphones are “essential” for mental health when they travel. Survey respondents also say they go out of their way to avoid noise, and especially the noise of a chatty passenger next to them. (Almost one-quarter of
the respondents said they’d rather sit next to the restroom than have to deal with a talkative seatmate.)
How bad is the problem? And how do you find some peace and quiet when you’re traveling?
How is travel getting louder?
Travel is getting louder in big and small ways, but one of the most significant contributors to travel
noise is the travel industry itself. Airports are expanding to accommodate more passengers. Roads are busier. And hotels are constantly being built or renovated.
Noise complaints to the Federal Aviation Administration have been climbing steadily in the last five years, rising from 4,025 to 23,251 in 2024.
“Throughout the tourism space,
there will always be a cycle of transformation and reinvention that causes noise pollution,” says Brandon McConnell, a hotel industry consultant.
Experts were hard-pressed to identify just a single culprit.
It depends where you go. For example, I’m staying in an apartment in Dublin, which is across the street from a popular pub. The traditional Irish folk music starts around 2 p.m. and continues until 2 a.m., and later on weekends.
Even when there’s no music, the noise can still be deafening. There are jackhammers from the construction crews working on the street during the day, drunken tourists screaming at each other at 4 a.m., police sirens and squawking seagulls. And if you’ve ever been to Dublin, you know that the seagulls are the loudest.
I get a lot of complaints from travelers about noise. I know this is a trend because I’ve suffered it, too. And I can see it: Those earbuds people are wearing: do they ever take those out?
Noise from page 8
Bottom line: It’s true. The noise has never been worse.
How to find a quiet place when you travel.
You don’t have to dream of finding a little peace and quiet on your next trip. And there’s no need to find one of those sound-absorbing anechoic chambers where it’s so quiet that you can hear your own heartbeat. There are plenty of places in nature, like the Haleakalā crater in Maui, which is consistently rated one of the quietest places on earth. Olympic National Park in Washington also has some areas known for their lack of noise.
But practically speaking, you want to lower the decibel levels where you are. Earth.fm, a nonprofit organization, publishes a list of the quietest places in loud cities. They’re mostly parks in urban areas, where the noise level drops dramatically because of the lack of cars.
For example, when I lived in Tampa earlier this year, I could escape the cacophony of Florida’s west coast by visiting Weedon Island Preserve (Quiet Score: 4.60 out of 11.16) or the Courtney Campbell Trail (Quiet Score: 3.72).
“Escaping noise pollution isn’t necessarily about finding silence,” says Olivia Lott, a spokeswoman for Earth.fm. “Not all noise is bad for our health.”
She’s right. There’s growing evidence that the sounds of nature, like ocean waves or birdsong, can relax you. Or if you’re more hard-core, you can plug in your earbuds and listen to white noise. To each their own.
How to protect yoursel from noise when you’re traveling.
Here are a few tried and true tips for shielding yourself from noise when you’re on the road.
Buy a pair of noise-canceling headphones or earplugs -- and use them.
This is probably the single most effective thing you can do to reduce noise levels, particularly on flights and in noisy hotels. Then you can replace the outside noise with your noise. “I upload loud dance music onto my iPhone that I can crank up in my headphones or earbuds to muffle loud situations that I encounter on planes, trains, buses, and boats,” says Elaine Lee, editor of “Go Girl: “The Black Woman’s Book of Travel and Adventure.”
Plan your flights and accommodations carefully.
Avoid flying during peak hours or on smaller, noisier planes. When booking a hotel, request a room on a higher floor or away from busy streets, ballrooms and elevators. You can also look for hotels that advertise soundproofing features like double-paned windows. For example, the room 2 Belfast offers a special quiet room without windows designed to maximize your sleep. A hotel representative told me it was a favorite with flight crews who just wanted a good night’s rest.
Download a white noise app or calming nature sounds.
This can help mask disruptive noises in hotel rooms and other environments. You can also try playing calming music or ocean waves. Mary Cropper, a travel expert at Black Tomato, likes the Babelio Mini Sound Machine, which creates white noise in your room. “It’s a good travel hack,” she says.
Most importantly, don’t tolerate loud noise. That’s especially true if you’re staying in a hotel or vacation rental. Some of these facilities don’t meet basic standards for sound transmission, says Toh Tsun Lim, an architect and frequent traveler. “It’s not just sounds coming from other guestrooms, but also noise leaking from outside -- airports,
construction, street traffic, and emergency sirens.”
The best way to deal with it is not to deal with it. Complain to the hotel and ask for a different room.
The travel industry can do more to shield you from harmful noise, and it should. Hotel rooms need better soundproofing. Upgrading aircraft engines can reduce harmful noise. And EVs make almost no noise at all. But the industry doesn’t feel any urgency because, well … we’re plugging our ears with those ubiquitous AirPods.
As travel continues to amplify its decibel levels, maybe it’s also time for travelers to take matters into their own hands -- or ears. By packing a pair of quality earplugs and having a well-thought-out travel plan, you can reclaim your right to enjoy the journey without feeling like you’re stuck in a rock concert.

Years ago, in my childhood, I had a grandfather who always used a cane. He needed it because he had been injured in a horse accident and couldn’t walk well. He used that can for many things, and the one I especially remember was the threats he displayed as an act of punishment for his wayward grandchildren. The more important use of the cane was to help him maintain his balance. I have come to appreciate that cane and the purpose many people have found in using them. The use of the cane helps maintain balance when there is unsteadiness. Today, I see people with canes of all ages, sexes, nationalities, and religions using them for their balance, at least physically.
Keeping balanced in all areas of life is no less important, including mental, spiritual, physical, and emotional beliefs, relationships, attitudes, and most aspects of life. We are reminded of an old proverb that illustrates the need for balance, “ALL WORK AND NO PLAY MAKES JACK A DULL BOY.” The balance between work demands for approval and survival and taking time off for recreation is essential for one’s mental and physical health. In fact, vacation time in industry and the military is mandatory. Working long hours for overtime pay is discouraged except in emergencies. The Biblical Sabbath is the call of the Creator to take one day off a week to rebalance one’s life in perspective and spirit.
We certainly need a balance in our attitude. We can be consumed with hopelessness, despair, negativity, fear of disaster, and a future of uncertainty and even death. Days will be filled with restlessness and anxiety. How do we balance a world of this kind of reality with a world of hope, faith, confidence, and happiness? In Proverbs 23:7, a Biblical bit of wisdom can help direct us in thinking: “As one thinks, so is he.” We can control the mind as easily as letting it go amuck in that world of defeat. It is all in our attitude with balance.
Even religiously, we need balance. Human beings make many mistakes and sin. We don’t deny sin and often live with its judgment and heavy guilt. We can’t deny sin, lest we make God a liar. However, we can have a balanced life with God by claiming the way to acceptance and forgiveness: “If we admit our mistakes and sins, God can forgive us and cleanse us from all wrongs.” This will give us a balanced life.
Perhaps the most problematic area of balance is aging. As we age, our hair turns gray, our eyesight diminishes, our hearing worsens, our strength weakens, and our capabilities wane. Things get out of balance, and despite the pills and magical promises of rejuvenation, we are what we are, and as two songwriters wrote, “Whatever will be will be.” With the right balance of accepting life as it is, it will be possible to do so, and we will keep on going with Grandpa’s cane.

At the beginning of the last century, 40% of America’s families lived on farms and worked in agriculture. Today only 2% of American families live and work on farms. Agricultural technology has allowed us to dramatically increase productivity and largely automate the entire process. In 1900 only 2% of Americans went to college. By 2024 that number was 62%.
Historically primary and secondary education systems in America were staffed, managed and financed locally. In the mid twentieth century the federal government stepped in to enforce integration and civil rights legislation institutionalized by the Civil Rights Act of 1963. Then, in 1980, the United States Dept of Education was established by President Jimmy Carter. The partial federalizing of America’s education system marked the beginning of a profound change. The expansion of the Federal Government into education was led and supported by
It only happens twice a year, but the switch to Daylight Saving Time in the Spring and back to Standard Time in the Fall can be really confusing for people, pets, and farm animals.
Some pets barely notice. When we had our 14-year-old dogs, the boys thought it was wonderful if they got to lay in bed with Mommy and Daddy for an extra hour in the morning.
the Democrat Party. Over the years the teaching profession has gradually evolved into a reliable voting block for Democrat politicians. Historically teachers relied on their internal knowledge base, acquired through years of education, to pass their acquired wisdom on to their students. As the AI (artificial intelligence) augmented IW (intelligent web) evolved to make available nearly the entire knowledge base of mankind, teachers became less relevant as storehouses of information. The result has been a tendency for educators to prefer less structured disciplines where they are less likely to be confronted with conflicting facts or new discoveries.
Political and social issues offer such an escape route. Being right or wrong is simply a matter of opinion.
Teachings in classical science subjects like Astronomy and Biology or technical disciplines like Mathematics are less likely to become contaminated with the social viewpoints because their basic tenets are of long standing and well understood. Less objective disciplines like the Humanities and Arts are fertile ground for today’s teachers to insert their predominantly liberal worldviews. Teaching professionals have historically been charged with helping our young to learn the commonly accepted virtues of honesty, civility and mutual acceptance. Many latter day teachers have moved beyond endorsing these commonly held virtues toward endorsing more controversial positions. Where teachers once emphasized accepted principles and provided unbiased reviews of the arguments that support alternative viewpoints, they began to venture on to the slip-
pery slope of endorsing only one side of controversial social issues. Students, having easy Internet access to arguments pro and con regarding controversial social issues, often came to conclusions opposing those of their teachers. As a result of their one sided stand on controversial social issues, teachers lost credibility with many of their students, often the best and brightest.
The fact that professional educators are no longer the primary source of information in the education of our youth is a game changer. The IW has many times the information held by even the most proficient human expert in any discipline. The role of teachers is changing and it is painful for many, particularly those older more experienced. Teachers are losing their purpose as a reliable “go-to” source of information, particularly at the secondary school level and above. The Internet is smarter more consistent and never takes a sick day. Many educators balk at the prospect of yielding their place as the primary font of knowl-
edge in education to the IW.
Educators are often seen as the “new age Luddites” helpless to stop the innovations that are changing their occupation, yet defiantly opposed to the inevitable.
The merger of AI (artificial intelligence) with broadband Internet to create the IW (intelligent Web) is changing the role of five million American educators as well as that of other professionals who rely on extensive post-graduate learning to integrate data bases related to their chosen discipline. Teachers, lawyers and medical doctors and other professionals are still be with us but their clients have ready access on the IW to much of the information they once used to justify their existence. These professions are face with change and must adjust to remain relevant. How will the IW change our lives and theirs? We can’t even guess today, but we can be absolutely assured that IW technology will be a powerful force in the next stage of human evolution.

They also didn’t mind the change when it was time to go to bed at night. They could both fall asleep any time. “Why are we going to bed now? It’s still light outside. Okay. Let’s go.”
The four-year-old dog we have now is very much a creature of habit. She wakes up at the same time every morning. When she’s sure we’re awake, she goes out for a potty break when waits by her food bowl. It’s almost as if she’s wearing a watch on her paw.
At night, she eats her dinner then goes directly to bed. There’s no variation. With Daylight Saving Time starting, the alarm clock will change but her internal clock and her stomach will need a while to catch up.
For the first couple weeks after the time change, animal shelters, veterinarians, and behaviorists get calls from people saying their dogs and cats don’t want to eat or they want to eat constantly. Some pets seem to sleep all the time. Others are awake and doing Zoomies at 3:00 in the morning.
One of my dairy farmer friends said it took a couple weeks for his cows to catch up to the new schedule. Hungry cows don’t make for a happy herd.

Before the season really, really gets underway, I would think some enterprising woman would put together a group of other like-minded women and arrange for shopping sprees during football season. That way, while we men are exercising our constitutional right to watch football games on tv these lovely women can help increase the economy. Why, they might even organize sales teams and charge a fee for arranging bus tours to a variety of merchants - that is, if there are enough buses availabel for rent to accommodate these ladies.
Note: It is important that if such a plan were to be undertaken that said women must ensure that we men are properly attended to . . . plenty of cold beer, wine, chips, dips, sandwiches, and various nuts and candies. It is important that these items be attended to before said women adjourn to the shops.
As for me, I’m fairly easy to please. I seldom drink so iced tea or diet drinks would work for me. Also, I tend to watch college games insead of pro games. The games are more interesting, more competitive, and many of the college players don’t have tattoos all over their body nor do they wear grotesque beards.
And they don’t take a knee when our national anthem is played.
I have to admit that I still tend to watch the Chargers . . . the LA Chargers. Did you know they used to be the San Diego Chargers? Someone told me that.
Naturally, we men, being the kind, caring and considerate mammals we are, all wish you womenfolks well during the football season and look forward to hooking up with you again come mid January. You may want to poke your nose into the viewing room from time to time to say hello or, perhaps, to pick up those pesky dirty clothes and socks that have a habit of accumulating on the floor. Please, in the name of all that is Holy, try to take care of these matters during commercial time-outs.
As a reward we just might take you out for dinner at the end of the season.
You’re welcome.

ran to his workshop where he created and patented the world’s first lock-stitch sewing machine!
Golfing immortal, Jack Nicklaus, credits a dream with solving a slump he suffered in his play. The year was 1964 and Nicklaus was having a bad golfing trend, shooting regularly in the high seventies. The world of golf was stunned when Nicklaus’ game suddenly and miraculously improved.
“Wednesday night I had a dream and it was about my golf swing,” Nicklaus said. “I was hitting them pretty good in the dream and all at once I realized I wasn’t holding the club the way I’ve actually been holding it lately.”
The golfing legend was stunned that his dream perfectly analyzed the problem in his golf-swing,
something his conscious mind was unable to solve. “I’ve been having trouble collapsing my right arm taking the club head away from the ball, but I was doing it perfectly in my sleep.” When he awoke, Nicklaus remembered his dream’s “golfing technique” and applied it to his real-life golf game!
A young Albert Einstein first conceived his Theory of Relativity in a dream! Einstein’s fellow scientist and close friend, Niels Bohr (1885-1962), also experienced an inspirational dream, himself, which led to his discovery of the structure of the atom! And Nobel Prizing-winning scientist, Frederick Banting (1891-1941), said it was a dream episode that gave him the idea and solution on how to treat diabetes with insulin! Banting’s dream changed and im-
proved the lives of countless millions of diabetic-sufferers around the world! All thanks to a dream.
Numerous examples of dreams are recorded throughout history, helping writers, artists, scientists, and inventors create and solve their individual problems through their dreams!
SLEEP AND DREAMS. Since the dawn of human civilization, sleep and dreams have captured the imagination of every culture that has ever existed on this great planet of ours. From the ancient cave-dwellers to the present homo sapiens, sleep and dreams continue to be an elusive mystery, like a beguiling temptress who is unwilling to reveal all her hidden secrets. From the time when our earliest ancestors thought dreams to be special messages from the
mysterious Great Beyond or that the soul journeys out of the body to visit and experience far-away places, dreams – even to this day – are greatly misunderstood and to a large part – still remain a puzzle to us all.
