HOME SWEET HOME ESCONDIDO

Escondido in San Diego’s North County region is home sweet home to 146,000 people who enjoy many of America’s premier tourist attractions in or near Escondido, California.

And, surprisingly, Escondido has been the home of some of the most notable people in the country. For example, Tom Anderson (co-founder of My Space), and Sean Salisbury (former ESPN anchorman and former NFL quarterback) who was a graduate of Orange Glen High School, as well

as one of history’s pivotal figures, Sam Brannan (California’s first millionaire). In regards to Sam Brannan (1819-1889), he was an undisputed mover-and-shaker in California’s history. After the murder of Mormon Church leader, Joseph Smith, in June of 1844, Brannan and other members of the Latter Day Saints (Mormons) moved to northern California.

Brannan lived a most colourful life. He was an American settler, businessman, journalist, and prominent Mormon who founded the California Star newspaper in 1847, the first

newspaper in San Francisco, California. It was only the second newspaper in all of California, following The Californian (1846 in Monterey, and re-started later in San Francisco).

Also, Brannan is considered the first to publicise the California Gold Rush in 1848 via his newspaper. His personal life declined sharply after his wife divorced him and he was forced to liquidate much of his real estate in order to pay her one-half of his total financial assets. He was never the same man after his divorce; a shell of his former self. After the divorce

devastated him – both emotionally and financially – he became a brewer and, ironically, became addicted to his own alcohol production.

Forsaking San Francisco, the very city he helped develop, Brannan drifted south to San Diego and remarried. He became a permanent resident of Escondido, deciding to drift no more. His life in history books read of an amazing man, a visionary, who went from modest dollars to millionaire in a short span of time. One million dollars during his day is equivalent to around $41-million in 2025.

Slowly, his finances and assets dwindled, relegating him to die poor and forgotten in Escondido, his final chosen place of residency.

For many of our readers of The Paper who live in various states and as far away as the eastern seaboard, these California historical insights are of genuine interest (especially for those who frequently vacation here throughout the year).

The historical ledger of prominent people who have lived in Escondido covers a wide spectrum and their variety of importance is most intriguing and surprising.

Even famous scientist have called Escondido home, such as Robert Klark Graham (1906-1997), eugenicist, inventor, and founder of the world-famous Repository for Germinal Choice (Nobel Prize Sperm Bank). Dr. Graham conceived and created his controversial Nobel Prize Sperm Bank from his Escondido ranch in the late 1970s. The one-time Escondido resident made millions by developing shatter-proof plastic eyeglass lenses.

Also, Dr. Harold F. Blum (18991980), gained global prominence as the physiologist who first explored sunlight-induced skin cancer. The much celebrated medical pioneer, Dr. Blum, was born on 12 February1899, right here in Escondido, California.

This week, a compendium of wit, wisdom and neat stuff you can tell at parties. Enjoy!

If I make you breakfast in bed a simple thank you is sufficient.

Not all this . . “how did you get into my house!” business.

And if all of this were not enough, Escondido has been the home to a multitude of famous sports figures, such as Eric Weddle #32 of the San Diego Chargers (2007-2015 before the Chargers moved to Los Angeles, and later played for the Baltimore Ravens (2016 – 2018) with his same number #32). Weddle won a Super Bowl ring in Super Bowl LVI with the Los Angeles Rams before retiring in 6 February 2020.

When Weddle was asked to name his favourite Escondido restaurant he didn’t pause one bit as he was quoted: “Mi Guadalajara Restaurant in Escondido is one of my family’s favourites!” he gushed.

Wow! Just think, Eric Weddle and I have a lot in common! No, I don’t play professional football! At 126 pounds a strong gust of wind would blow me through the goal posts. The only ‘Eric and Friedrich’ similarity is a much less dramatic one: I also love eating at Mi Guadalajara Restaurant in Escondido.

CHARLIE’S FAMILY RESTAURANT.

For those readers outside of California who make frequent vacation stops here in Escondido, be sure to try Charlie’s Family Restaurant located on 210 N. Ivy Street or you can just call for directions at (760) 738-1545. Owner, Charlie Mitich, is a delicious story all by himself. Born abroad, when he first wished to become an American citizen, Mitich made the journey to Germany and then joined the U.S. Army in 1957.

sir, would you like another?”

Me: “Why would I want two empty glasses?”

I don’t need to flirt; I will seduce you with my awkwardness.

That awkward feeling when you are running and your breasts are bouncing . . . . and you’re a guy.

Free Marriage Tip: Don ‘t ask your wife when dinner will be ready when she is mowing the lawn.

So I had this smart-ass police officer come knocking on my door.

I answered the door and he said, “Where were you between 5 and 6?”

I said, “Kindergarten.”

How’s that for ingenuity?

After serving a 5-year hitch in such varied places as Alaska and Alabama, Mitich received his citizenship and moved his family to Escondido in 1963 and he’s been here ever since!

Charlie’s restaurant gets consistently high ratings in Yelp and also in reviews from Trip Advisor, a source many incoming tourists listen to. To our collective good fortune, Charles Mitich left his Macedonian roots and staked claim here where Escondido residents love to eat his American family-style meals. It’s truly an amazing odyssey in life that Mitich started as a fry cook at Escondido’s olde Wagon Wheel restaurant and, then, two years later bought the restaurant lock stock and barrel! Mitich’s family were the first handful of Macedonians to come to this North San Diego County we call Escondido. From the erstwhile Wagon Wheel Restaurant, Mitich took ownership of today’s highly-popular homespun eatery known simply as “Charlie’s Family Restaurant.” Mitich soon became acquainted with the many Serbian chicken farmers in the area who had fled from Eastern Europe earlier in the century. Despite speaking slightly different languages, Macedonians and Serbians still can understand each other’s native languages. Charlie Mitich is a true Horatio Alger story in the flesh! From common man to successful business owner, Charlie Mitich, truly embodies the American Dream.

Now retired, Charlie has passed the

torch onto the most capable hands of his daughter Susan Meleka (formerly Susan Mitich) along with her husband, Bill Meleka. Both Susie and husband Bill are popular with Charlie’s Restaurant customers who keep coming back – not just for the fantastic food! – but also to the way both Susie and Bill make everyone feel like members of the family! Susie often bakes the pies for the restaurant – how’s that for being ‘home spun’ – but she and Bill run the full gamut that such a hugely-popular enterprise demands.

And they do it all . . . with a great smile on their faces, often greeting customers personally and cheerfully, and making sure they are seated, and always properly served, and made to feel at home.

My editor, lyle e. davis, was honoured at Charlie’s Restaurant when they named a breakfast Special after him, simply called “Lyle’s Special.” Trust me, you have to at least read what this entails, as I’m certain you’ll want to order it! It is two eggs (any style you wish), French toast served with butter and warmup syrup, choice of bacon or sausage and, well, you’ll just HAVE to order it! I’m wearing a bib as I type this out because I’m drooling just talking about “Lyle’s Special” -- my ultimate dream breakfast!

At age 89 today in 2025, Charlie Mitich can still often be seen around Charlie’s Family-Style Restaurant.

FAMOUS SPORTS FIGURES WHO LIVED IN ESCONDIDO.

Escondido sports figures who lived in Escondido are Randy Johnson (major league baseball infielder for the Oakland A’s) and a graduate of Escondido High School; Gavvy Cravath (former right fielder for the Philadelphia Phillies baseball team), and George Horine (1890–1948) who held the world’s record in the high jump while only a sophomore when he competed at the NCAA meet. The great George Horine is considered an early pioneer in the techniques of high jumping and competed in the 1912 Summer Olympics at Stockholm, Sweden, where he won a bronze medal for the United States. Horine was born in Escondido, and his historic journey from Escondido to the world stage is immortalised in the annals of sports.

SCIENCE FICTION FILMS TO POPULAR TELEVISION SHOWS.

In the realm of film notables, Hollywood movie actor, Richard Denning (1914–1998), best known for starring in a number of science fiction and horror films of the 1950s, such as “The Creature from the Black Lagoon” in 1954, later made his mark in such film classics as “An Affair to Remember,” (1957) starring Cary Grant. Richard Denning, who was once a resident of Escondido, played the fictitious governor of Hawaii (Paul Jameson) on the original CBS crime drama, Hawaii Five-O television hit series (1968-1980), starring Jack Lord and still in re-runs.

DOUG BEST, FORMER ESCONDIDO MAYOR & POPULAR RADIO SHOW HOST.

Legendary radio host, and Escondido resident, Doug Best (19252016), was an aficionado of swing, blues, and the Big Band Sound, and promoted these sounds over the popular radio airwaves with a nostalgic commentary. Doug Best was a former Escondido councilman who proudly served our city from 1976 until 1988. He died of natural causes at age 90.

Because of Doug Best’s fondness for “yesteryear’s music” he was well-aware of the fact that the great band leader and arranger, Ray Conniff (1916-2002), also called Escondido, Home Sweet Home. Massachusetts gift to music, Ray Conniff, became an international giant with some of his musical genius going platinum and winning the coveted Grammy Award. Conniff’s music was a worldwide hit, drawing a staunch fan base that pervaded Europe, Australia, and even Japan! In 1979, Conniff was hired to rearrange and record new versions of “Those Were The Days,” and “Remembering You” which became the opening and closing themes of television’s blockbuster hit series, “All in The Family,” starring Carroll O’Connor.

What a surprise! Just imagine, all this time you had heard Ray Conniff’s music, but just never knew it. So, the next time you watch a re-run of “All in The Family,” you’re hearing pure Conniff!

Almost 57 years after the release of his immortal “Christmas with Conniff ” (1959), and two years after his death, Ray Conniff was posthumously awarded a platinum album/ CD. (On a side note: Ray Conniff was among my grandfather’s favourite bandleaders and composers. Along with such instrumentals as “In the Mood” with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, and Bunny Berigan’s “I Can’t Get Started.”, the music of

fake Parking Notices Placed on Vehicles in Vista

The City of Vista has been made aware of fraudulent parking notices placed on vehicles near Bobier Elementary School on Beaumont Drive.

These notices falsely claim the following:

• Street parking is reserved only for the school,

• Vehicles may be towed, and

• License plate numbers have been reported to a “Volunteer Sheriff’s Department.”

None of this is true.

• Street parking is NOT reserved for Bobier Elementary.

I have feared this possibility for quite some time . . . . primarily because I know a lot of Persians (Iranians).

It’s not the Iranian people that are the problem.

It’s the radical government and its crazy leaders.

I am hopeful that, given all that has recently transpired, that Iran will have a regime change. Get rid of the radicals . . . bring in new, decent leadership.

I first became interested in Iran and its people thanks to a brilliantly successful chiropractor by name of Omid Rahmanian and his wife, Parisa, an equally successful dentist. Dr. Omid was a client, adver-

tising in The Paper and he contacted me, noting that I had done cover stories on both the Mormons and the Sikhs; would I be interested in doing a cover story on the Baháʼí faith. He was primarily interested because the radical Iranian regime (my words, not his) had imprisoned seven Iranians for simply being members of the Baháʼí faith. I said I would be interested but in order to explain to our readers who and what Baháʼí was - I needed to learn about it myself. I was then invited to several evening meetings in the homes of active Baháʼís. Baháʼís do not have a church, a temple, or synagogue, or a supreme religious entity such as a Pope, a Priest, or a Rabbi. They meet in Baháʼí homes . . and meetings have members rotate as the host and lead the service. In addition to the in-home visits I read up on Baháʼí.

The Baháʼí Faith is a religion founded in the 19th century that teaches the essential worth of all religions and the unity of all people. Established by Baháʼu’lláh, it initially developed in Iran and parts of the Middle East, where it has faced ongoing persecution since its inception. The religion has 5-8 million adherents (known as Baháʼís) spread throughout most of the world’s countries and territories.

Baháʼís annually elect local, regional, and national Spiritual Assemblies that govern the religion’s affairs, and every five years an election is held for the Universal House of Justice, the nine-member governing institution of the worldwide Baháʼí community that is located in Haifa, Israel’s. Baháʼís regard the world’s major religions as fundamentally unified in their purpose, but divergent in their social practices and interpretations. The Baháʼí Faith stresses the unity

of all people as its core teaching; as a result, it explicitly rejects notions of racism, sexism, and nationalism. At the heart of Baháʼí teachings is the desire to establish a unified world order that ensures the prosperity of all nations, races, creeds, and classes.

I met several Baháʼís at these inhome meetings. Several had tragic stories, one family had been literally burned out of their home in Iran simply because they were Baháʼís. All had been persecuted by the Iranian regime while living in Iran.

I have since met many other Iranians/Persians (they prefer the name Persia and Persians; Iran is a new, manufactured name that does not truly represent the culture.) Almost all of the Persians I have met have been decent, sweet, loving and kind people . . . not at all like the regime that now governs Iran . . but which, hopefully, will soon be replaced by a respectable and respected government.

The thought of war between America and Iran is totally repugnant to me. Thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands, of innocent and kind Iranians might well be killed if such a war were to break out; similarly, we, America, would likely have casualties. A total waste of life . . for both sides.

I suspect America is working behind the scenes in Iran . . . trying to identify and support individuals and groups that could form a replacement government if and when the present regime is toppled.

It appears reasonable hope is on the horizon.

Ray Conniff always set my granddad’s toes to tapping!)

Ray Conniff died in Escondido on 12 October 2002 at age 85 from a fall he suffered in his bathroom. He never ceased recording and performing to his last days. Only the hand of death stopped him. Conniff sold over 70 million albums worldwide, an astonishing achievement for its era. His grave marker bears a musical score with the first four notes of the biggest hit song he ever had in his career: “Somewhere My Love” (1966) (originally composed by Maurice Jarre). The great Ray Conniff forever loved Escondido, where he chose to spend his golden years.

Famous bodybuilder and film actor, Steve Reeves (1926-2000), resided in nearby Valley Center. Reeves was the famous actor who portrayed Hercules (1957) in the movie of the same name, as well as its sequel, “Hercules Unchained” (1959). Reeves was ranked as the numberone box office draw in twenty-five countries around the world! He also won the Mr. Universe title in 1950.

Unfortunately, Reeves turned down some of the most popular movies in history. For example, he turned down the role of James Bond in the movie “Dr. No” (1962), and also the role that eventually went to Clint Eastwood in the worldwide box office hit, “A Fistful of Dollars” (1964).

On 1 May 2000, Steve Reeves died from a blood clot after having surgery two days earlier. He passed away at the olde Palomar Hospital in Escondido, California.

tensive that it is impossible to reproduce here.

Today, Escondido is still quite a remarkable place to visit or become a resident. There are many other incentives that entice people to settle down in this exciting North San Diego County region.

On many levels Escondido is world famous. Nearby is the world-famous Palomar Mountain State Park which has captured the attention of scientists who study the Earth’s natural environment, physical composition and structure. Palomar Mountain State Park has inspired and moved leading geoscientists, geographers, and geologists to remark: “It is like having a piece of the Sierras in your own back yard.” Upon these Palomar Mountain surroundings sits the world-renowned 200-inch Hale Telescope at the Palomar Observatory. It was the largest optical telescope in the entire world from its completion date in 1948 until 1976. It is used by international scientists and astronomers in trying to find clues to the creation of our universe and has proven successful in discovering distant objects out in deep space, including stars and thousands of asteroids.

The Palomar Observatory’s Hale Telescope has captured the attention of the general public to the point that it is a vastly popular tourist attraction today. It is open to the public during the day and visitors can take selfguided tours of the famed Observatory daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Observatory is open 7 days a week, year round except for Christmas Eve and Christmas day (and also closed during harsh weather conditions). It can be a life-changing journey of excitement and imagination at a breathtaking altitude of 5,500 feet with vistas and panoramas to feast your eyes on. There is also an exciting visitor’s centre and a gift shoppe to gather up your chosen souvenirs to treasure and remember your in-

credible journey.

This world-famous observatory is located off State Route 76 and is a travel distance of approximately two hours from downtown San Diego and one hour from Escondido. For all you lucky readers who wish to now make this exciting trek, the Palomar Observatory can be reached at (760) 742-2119 for added information.

As already mentioned, the Palomar Mountain Observatory and Hale telescope have proven, time and again, to be of enormous interest to the general public.

In 1994, Palomar Observatory was mentioned in the first television episode of Season Two of “The XFiles.” The airing of this particular episode on the enormously popular “The X-Files” sparked renewed popularity and pilgrimages to Palomar Mountain!

The popular Canadian band, The Rheostatics, released a 1992 CD with the song, “Palomar.”

The lyrics tell a touching story of a man on Palomar Mountain and his relationship with his best friend, a dog.

The popular band, Wellwater Conspiracy’s 1997 debut album, “Declaration of Conformity,” contains an instrumental called, “Palomar Observatory.” Wellwater Conspiracy singer and drummer, Matt Cameron, grew up in this northern region near the observatory itself!

Occupying a shallow valley, Escondido is ringed by rocky hills, and is perfectly situated. The name itself, ‘Escondido’, is a Spanish word meaning “hidden.” Some sources say the name originally referred to agua escondida or hidden water, and yet another source says it meant “hidden treasure.” The original inhabitants, the Diegueno (aka

Kumeyaay) tribes called the region “Eskondiid,”which more closely resembles Escondido’s present name.

It is truly amazing how we can grow up in the Escondido area and still not know about the fabulous treasures of fact and enormously important details that lie all around us. Such a stellar example is our very own San Diego Zoo Safari Park (formerly known as the “Wild Animal Park”), located near the city of Escondido, in the San Pasqual Valley. This park is visited by over 3-million people from around the world every year. Aside from many well-known attractions within the park, such as Tiger Trail, Hidden Jungle, Lion Camp, Condor Ridge, Nairobi Village and Gorilla Forest, there are some exhilarating attractions still not widely known. Here are some examples:

One of the most adrenalin-pumping adventures which only the bravest of the brave will choose to partake in, is the Flightline Safari. You must view this online at: http://www.sdzsafaripark.org/safari/flightline-safari.

Just viewing this video will get the heart pumping added blood to the brain! Secured to attached harnesses and a small lift-chair, you will fly as high as 130-feet above the ground at accelerating speeds, affording you a spectacular bird’s-eye-view of rhinos, giraffes, and other wildlife below you – if you can keep your eyes open, that is, during your daredevil aerial journey! Here are some spectacular facts about this worldrenowned Safari park:

1. The condor breeding program here is the most successful such program in the United States.

2. This park has the world’s largest veterinary hospital, making it indispensable.

The cost of weddings . . .

She happened to mention to me that she spent $55,000 on her daughter’s wedding!

My jaw almost dropped to the floor.

Naturally, I had enough common sense to not say anything . . . but it got me to thinking.

I’m kinda glad I never had a daughter. I’d love her and spoil her . . but no way would I spend $55,000 on her wedding.

I might give her $5000 and say . . . you kids wanna elope? Go for it! Here’s $5K for your honeymoon.

And $50,000 will be placed in a bank account, in your name, and I’m hoping you’ll use that for a down payment on a home. (Though I’m not even sure I’d do that).

Would you spend that kind of money on your daughter’s wedding?

Oh, to add insult to injury . . . the marriage did not work out.

A Fascinating Piece of History

Why did the US choose a US Navy Iowa-class battleship as the location for Japan’s surrender in World War 2 even though they were in Tokyo Bay and could have used a

building on land?

Pure symbolism.

Nothing says “you’re utterly defeated” than having to board the enemy’s massive battleship in the waters of your own capital city. A naval vessel is considered sovereign territory for the purposes of accepting a surrender. You just don’t get that if you borrow a ceremonial space from the host country.

In addition, the Navy originally wanted the USS South Dakota to be the surrender site. It was President Truman who changed it to USS

Last week’s Board of Supervisors meeting wasn’t just another day at the office — it was a day we delivered meaningful progress for the people of San Diego County, especially for those in North County.

Missouri, Missouri being Truman’s home state. The Japanese delegation had to travel across water to the Missouri, which sat at the center of a huge US fleet. It’s a bit like those movie scenes where someone enters a big-wig’s office, and the big-wig is sat silhouetted at the end of a long room, behind a massive desk. The appellant has to walk all the way to that desk along a featureless space, feeling small, exposed, vulnerable and comparatively worthless before the mogul enthroned in dramatic lighting before him. By the time he gets there the great speech he had prepared is reduced to a muttered sentence or two.

In addition, the USS Missouri flew the flag of Commodore Perry’s 19th century gun-boat diplomacy mission that opened the closeted Edoera Japan to the world and forced upon them the Meiji restoration which ended the rule of the samurai class. The symbolism here is pretty clear - “this is how we want you to be, and remember what happens to countries that defy us.” It was particularly humiliating for a proud country like Japan, and that was entirely the point. The symbolism of the ceremony was even greater than that. The ship was anchored at the precise latitude/longitude

emergency housing and vital services for homeless veterans passed unanimously. As a Navy veteran, I take this responsibility to heart.

No one who wore the uniform of this country should be sleeping on the very streets they risked their lives to defend. These men and women fought for our freedom, and while we’ve made some progress, the fact that so many are still without shelter and support is unacceptable.

Gratitude alone isn’t enough. They deserve action — and I intend to keep fighting until every veteran in San Diego County has the care, stability, and dignity they’ve earned.

While we advanced real solutions on one front, I also had to push back against more of the same government gridlock when it came to the Tijuana Sewage Crisis. At the same meeting, I voted no on yet another bureaucratic response that would have wasted time and resources rather than solve the problem.

recorded in Perry’s log during his 1845 visit, symbolizing the purpose of both visits to open Japan to the West. Perry’s original flag was also present, having been flown all the way from the Naval Academy for the ceremony.

When the Japanese delegation came aboard, they were forced to use an accommodation way (stairs) situated just forward of turret #1. The freeboard (distance between the ship’s deck and the water line) there makes the climb about twice as long as if it had been set up farther aft, where the freeboard of the ship is less. NOTE: This was even more of an issue for the Japanese surrender party as the senior member, Foreign Affairs Minister Shigemitsu, was crippled by an assassination attempt in 1932, losing his right leg in the process.

The #1 and #2 turrets had been traversed about 20 degrees to starboard. The ostensible reason for this was to get the turret overhangs out of the way to create more room for the ceremony on the starboard veranda deck, but in fact this would have only required traversing turret #2 had it been the real reason. However, the turret position also put the gun tubes directly over the heads of the Japanese. They were literally boarding the ship “under the gun”.

The proposal? Appoint a new “Sewage Crisis Chief.” Commission more economic and environmental studies. Conduct yet another public health report. Let’s be clear: we don’t need more titles or paperwork — we need action.

We already know what the problem is. Mexico continues to dump raw sewage and toxic waste into our waterways, polluting our beaches, harming our economy, and threatening public health.

San Diegans are rightfully frustrated — and I am too. It’s time to stop talking and start holding Mexico accountable.

Enough is enough. I’ll continue fighting for real results, not red tape — because the people of San Diego County deserve nothing less.

boys) were all hand-picked to be over six feet tall, a further intimidation of the short-statured Japanese. The surrender documents themselves, one copy for the Allies and one for the Japanese contained identical English-language texts, but the Allied copy was bound in good quality leather, while the Japanese copy was bound with light canvas whose stitching looked like it had been done by a drunken tailor using kite string.

After the signing ceremony, the Japanese delegation was not invited for tea and cookies; they were shuffled off the ship as an Allied air armada of over 400 aircraft flew overhead as a final reminder that American forces still had the ability to continue fighting should the Japanese have second thoughts on surrender.

booking.com transferred my refund to someone else’s credit card

Q: I reserved a villa in Alicante, Spain, through Booking.com and paid in full. Three days before my trip, Booking.com canceled the reservation and offered little help in getting an alternative. I found a new property on Booking.com, but it cost $1,000 more.

Booking.com agreed to refund the difference and credited the amount to my Booking.com wallet. However, without my authorization, it then transferred the funds to an unknown credit card. Despite numerous emails and phone calls, Booking.com ignored my requests for an explanation. Can you help? ~ Elaine Treacy, Commugny, Switzerland

A: Booking.com should have done everything it could to help you find an alternative when it had to cancel your reservation. Transferring your refund to the wrong account just added insult to injury.

You did the right thing by documenting your communications with Booking.com and persistently seeking an explanation.

If an accommodation provider cancels your reservation, which is what appeared to have happen, then Booking.com should have notified you as soon as possible -not three days before your trip. It also should have tried to find suitable alternative accommodation. If it wasn’t available, then Booking. com should have given you a full refund. Additionally, in some cases where the cancellation is the provider’s fault, Booking.com should have offered additional compensation, especially if there’s a price difference between the canceled vacation rental and the replacement.

Booking.com didn’t give you enough time, and you had to negotiate the $1,000 compensation (it should have just offered it). And, of course, it shouldn’t have sent your refund to a mysterious third party.

In cases like this, where a company ignores a legitimate complaint, sometimes involving a third party, like a consumer advocate, can help.

I contacted Booking.com on your behalf. After weeks of back and forth, Booking.com claimed they found no suspicious activity on your account. In other words, the company believed you had trans-

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park also offers a most unique experience -- actual sleepovers within the park appropriately called, “Roar and Snore.” All “Roar and Snore” sleepovers include a nice tent already set up with floor pads for your sleeping bag. Also, camp activities, an afterhours look at the wild life of animals, guided walks, a campfire programme, dinner, an evening snack, and breakfast the following morning. Yikes, I dunno. I can outrun a snake, but, an elephant – let alone a cheetah – um, I don’t think I can run that fast. The fastest I’ve ever run was when I, literally, got ants in my pants when I was 10 years olde at my grandma’s outdoor picnic (true story).

Did you know that from 1964-1968, the then-San Diego Chargers held training camp in Escondido? It’s true! Also, young Escondido kids (age 11 to 12) have proven to be among the world’s best athletes. In 1981, Escondido National Little League (representing U.S. West) became the 19th team to reach the Little League World Series, from the state of California. At the Western Regional in San Bernardino, the Escondido powerhouse team won four straight games to earn the trip

to Williamsport, Pennsylvania, for the world championship! This is no easy accomplishment since worldwide competition comes from Australia, Canada, Europe, Africa, Japan, Latin America, Mexico, Asia, and even the Middle East! Whew! I don’t know about you, but I’m just tuckered-out reading about this extraordinary Escondido fact! Where’s the Gatorade?!

With a population of only 146,000 residents, compared to much larger areas numbering well over 1-million, Escondido’s accomplishments -- despite its comparatively lower population -- makes its accomplishments that much more spectacular!

VALLEY VIEW CASINO & HOTEL RESORT IS WORLD RENOWN.

Many indigenous tribes that encircle Escondido have enriched this cultural area not only on historical grounds, but as burgeoning businesses all of which provide a variety of jobs at the various casinos that dot the landscape here. The Native American casinos, located on reservations, provide an exciting night life of casino gambling, restaurants, and live Las Vegas-type shows which feature the greatest entertainers in the world today. Among the most lavish and world-famous Native American casinos is Valley View Casino & Hotel Resort located in Valley Centre and within close proximity of Escondido. buy, sell, Hold?

This week we’ll discuss a few of the more-common questions associated with bullion trading. How much precious metal should I hold? Where do I store it? When is a good time to sell? What payments are accepted?

When it comes to investing we always recommend trading no more than 1/3 at a time. For example; If I wanted to invest $6000, I would split that into (3) $2000 transactions. The reason for this is we never know for certain which direction the market is heading. This method is commonly used to enter the market over time and/ or used to cost average. Keep in mind, this is not a wise strategy for trades under $2K in value. Those trades are subject to sales tax. Purchases of $2000 or greater are exempt. Very important to that bottom-line $$!

readers here and out-of-state and even foreign visitors are now planning on visiting Valley View Casino on their next holiday stay here!

Kumeyaay Tribal Chairman & CEO of Valley View Casino & Resort, Mr. Stephen Cope, has much to be proud of his world-renown Vegasstyle casino that is becoming more and more popular as word is spreading like a prairie fire, as is evident in public response in our weekly publication, The Paper which has a national readership from California to New York – and in Europe -- all viable annual tourists to our region of Escondido!

Escondido is well-known for its variety of parks, some are of great historical importance, such as Kit Carson Park. Kit Carson was named after the famous scout. The park sits in a valley that is about five miles west of where Kit Carson fought under General Kearny, in the Battle of San Pasqual during the MexicanAmerican War (1846-1848).

Though Kit Carson Park is the largest in Escondido (285-acres), it is not the oldest. That honour belongs to Grape Day Park, officially the oldest Escondido park. Grape Day Harvest was celebrated every year from 1908 to 1950, and then was revived by the Escondido History Centre in 1996. Grape Day Park hosts many events including movies in the park (during the summer), and its spectacular annual 4th of July Celebration featuring music from a live band which complements the overhead pyrotechnic show! Also, be sure to visit the old Santa Fe Train Station and even find a seat to sit within the

train itself! It’s a priceless Kodak Moment, so bring your camera.

Also Dixon Lake in Escondido has a spectacular boating and fishing attraction and overnight facilities as well as beautiful parks, vistas, and wildlife.

Famous bandleader and television personality, Lawrence Welk (19031992), made his mark in Escondido when he created what is now the Lawrence Welk Village and Resort. This resort complex is located at 8860 Lawrence Welk Drive, in Escondido. For added information, you may call (866) 599-6674. The resort features many attractions including live performances at the Lawrence Welk Theatre which range from Broadway-style musicals, to comedy, and stage magic.

Lawrence Welk, himself, is a most interesting persona. He never learned to fully grasp the fluency of the English language, and certain idioms confused him which, inadvertently, caused him to become even more popular on his own Lawrence Welk television shows, beginning in the 1950s. His accent seemed to intrigue television viewers.

Welk was born in the German-speaking community of Strasburg, North Dakota. His lineage was from ethnic Germans who emigrated to America in 1892. Welk’s verbal mistakes and clumsy sentences in English only added to his appeal. He once said on national television, “George,

So how much should you hold? Without diving too deep into your wealth portfolio, we typically recommend 5-10% of your total assets. 5% is a great way to hedge against inflation and store some emergency assets on hand. 10% is a stronger/more aggressive position allowing investors to capitalize on significant market gains etc. Some investors will hold 5% long-term and gamble the other 5%. Some go in much deeper.. Long story short – Never gamble more than you’re willing to lose!

Storage: This is commonly done in bank security boxes, personal home safes, PVC pipes, false floors and walls etc. If your bank locks down, your goods could be gone. If your gardener digs up your fake sewer line full of silver, it may be gone. If you get hit by a train and never told your family about the false floor or wall, well . . . it’s probably gone too. Our

recommendation is to store your items in a secure facility or a place you’re confident no one will find it. When doing so, be sure to let someone know. Hey Bob! If I die, don’t throw away that only bag of dog food in the pantry (wink, wink). Oh, or that PVC pipe in the garage with the red paint in it.

Selling: Ok this gets a bit tricky. Recommending the 5% investment strategy – I wouldn’t sell until absolutely needed. If you want to play with some $$ and gamble on the markets you may want to consider setting a sale price upon purchase. Say I paid $38.40 for silver. I want to make $5/oz so I’ll sell when I can net $43.40 and so on. If you go with the 1/3 strat-

egy you’d want to sell a 1/3 at a X gain. Sell 1/3 at a 10% market increase. Another 1/3 at 20% and the last 1/3 at 30%. These are just examples of some strategies used in the bullion trading market. Your specific strategy may differ. Get creative!

Payments can be made in cash, cashiers check and/or personal check. Personal checks require a 10 day hold on delivery. Your price will be locked in at the time of the transaction and your goods will be safely stored at one of our secure facilities during the 10 days. The Pastor says . . . A Family In Conflict

Often, we are encouraged to model our lives on Biblical stories and their characters. There should be examples of honor, virtue, truth, discipline, and even holiness. I have often advised people to read the Bible. This is especially true of a saying we often use, though not a direct quote from the Bible, which is, “The family that prays together stays together.” I thought a good story to read would be the story of Adam and Eve. After all, many families are in chaos, heading for the divorce court or struggling to find the way to happiness. Would the story of Adam and Eve be a good model for modern marriage and family? There was no time for all the contemporary issues that we face to develop. One would think that the best of everything would be present for the greatest happiness in this first family. Was there conflict in this first family?

I have personally officiated at hundreds of weddings. I have learned that a wedding doesn’t make a marriage or a family. Usually, there is some time for a couple to develop a relationship, which often includes children. The components of a family, by definition, are a father (male), a mother (female), and their children. The first story of a family included each of these components. This family doesn’t give us an example of harmony and peace. Instead, we have conflict and misery.

We begin with the parents. The Bible says that God created the woman for Adam’s happiness and help. We know little of the exchange between these two people. Adam was busy in the garden, tending his crops as a manager. Eve was busy checking out the fruit, being a dutiful housewife.

She is listening to the voice of a stranger called Satan. She was not loyal to her husband but found the stranger more appealing and followed his suggestion for more excitement. She eats of it and gives it to her husband. When God approaches them, they have many excuses, and the first marriage becomes one of blame and recrimination. With that, they are rejected from Paradise, a perfect marriage, and begin a family marked by conflict.

Now, like most marriages, they wanted children, and they had two boys, Cain and Abel. I suspect they enjoyed seeing the boys grow up. Each son chose his own interest. The boys are spiritual and offer sacrifices to God. Parents like to have their children spiritually and God-fearing. The problem is that one (Abel)

Peter

Meet Peter! This handsome, energetic pup is full of life and looking for an adopter who can match his energy with patience and understanding. Peter has shown dog reactivity in our care, so potty breaks and walks in lowertraffic areas will help set him up for success. He has shown playful and friendly behaviors during one-on-one interactions with other dogs but may thrive best in a home without another dog while he adjusts. If you’re ready for a rewarding journey with a spirited companion, Peter is eager to meet you! Peter (944380) is available for adoption at San Diego Humane Society’s Escondido Campus at 3500 Burnet Dr. If you have questions about the adoption process, you can visit sdhumane.org/adopt or call 619-299-7012.

Yep, it finally happened. It took nearly 300,000 years but we finally closed the deal in America. For the first time ever, in 2025, we “old farts” (over 45) finally represent the majority of the adult (21+) population in the USA. The older and wiser heads of “OFs” have been the majority of adults in the rest of the world for about a generation. The 2025 numbers in the USA are, 27% - 21 or younger, 36% are 2145 and 37% are 45 and older. Ever improving technology in medicine, nutrition and lifestyles have enabled us to double human life expectancy from under forty years to over eighty years and expand Earth’s human population from 1 billion to 8 billion, all in the past 200 years.

Some of the growth in human population is attributed to reduced infant mortality and disease elimi-

Once in a while something happens reminding me that we still need help. This happened last week when I stopped to ask a homeless man about his dog.

This whole thing started about 15 years ago when someone told me, “When I see a homeless person I turn my head. But when I see a homeless person with a dog, we have something in common.”

We are drawn to people who seem

nation but the doubling of our life spans over the past two centuries is the major force behind the dramatic growth of our population. That folks over 45 today comprise more than half of Earth’s adult population is a historic first in human history. The average lifespan of Americans today is a bit north of eighty and the average age of our population today is forty. Two hundred years ago the average American’s lifespan was thirty-nine years!

Half of working American adults are over forty-five with a median annual income of $65,000. Median annual income for American workers under forty-five is $32,000. The median annual income for retired Americans (seniors) is $58,000. Many younger American families need two incomes just to break even and sustain their growing families. Those over forty-five tend to be comfortable empty nesters with two incomes and substantial assets. Seniors on indexed retirement incomes typically have significant accumulated assets like homes, savings and investments. Younger workers with growing families have not had time to accumulate significant wealth and, particularly in California, often face job and wage competition from undocumented immigrants and inflated housing prices.

California’s young workers are increasingly forced to accept the generosity of parents in order to make ends meet. Young Californians, like other “Blue State” inhabitants, may be discovering that liberal politicians aren’t particularly good at life planning for their constitu-

ents and might even be starting to question political motivations and relevance.

In our 80 plus years Nome and I have witnessed and been a part of the unbelievable march of consumer technologies, among them automatic transmission, TV, beepers, cell phones, self driving cars, Google glasses and so on. At The Computer Factory right here on San Marcos Blvd over the last thirty years Nome and I have been part of the growth and development of PCs, artificial intelligence and the Internet. Powerful Internet servers combined with AI technology promise to change mankind more in this century than any past technology. We are DIs (Digital Immigrants), a part of the older generations that achieved adulthood prior to exposure to AI enhanced broadband.

We are the last generation to have formed our cognizant process without access to the combined power of AI and high speed Internet AKA the IW (Intelligent Web). Those born after 1995 grew to adulthood potentially exposed to the IW throughout their formative years. The entire group are known as DNs (Digital Natives). The difference between DIs and DNs is subtle but important. The DNs formed their cognizant resources in conjunction with the IW. They used the IW to obtain solutions. By contrast the DIs had no alternative to their internal cognitive powers. While both DNs and DIs use the IW for information today, the DIs have better developed cognitive powers because they were forced to use it in their formative years. More on this subject next week.

to be like us. It gives us something to build on.

Between five and ten percent of the homeless people in America have dogs or cats. In some areas it’s as much as 24%. These are people who have so little but find a way to share what they do have with their “best friends.”

August is “Feeding Pets of the Homeless Month.” With that in mind, here’s what I’ve seen at Brock’s Community Pet Food Bank at Rancho Coastal Humane Society.

It had an unofficial beginning. There seemed to be more and more people coming to the shelter and asking if we could help them out with some dog or cat food. A couple of cans of food here. A bag of kibbles there.

Come and get yours before somebody else snatches it!

It was a real eye opener when we participated in “Project Homeless Connect.” Homeless people converged on the campus at Cal State San Marcos. We were stunned by how many of them had pets. We were also surprised by how well they cared for their pets.

These were people who struggled every day. I remember one veteran in particular. We gave him dog food, a new leash and collar,

and flea treatment. Then we asked, “What can we do for you?”

He replied, “I’m not here for myself. I’m here for my dog. He’s all I’ve got.”

That puts things into perspective, doesn’t it?

During this Feeding Pets of the Homeless Month, maybe you bought more dog or cat food than you need. A bag of kibbles that’s about to expire. Some canned food that your finicky cat won’t eat.

Or you just hate the thought that some dog or cat will sleep on the street...snuggled with the person they love...while both of their tummies rumble.

Thank you for helping. We’re in this together.

I direct my executor to take all actions legally permissible to have the probate of my will done as simply and as free of court supervision as possible under the laws of the state having jurisdiction over this will, including filing petition in the appropriate court for the independent administration of my estate.

I grant to my executor the following powers to be exercised as he or she deems to be in the

best interest of my estate:

1. To retain property without liability for loss or depreciation.

2. To dispose of property by public or private sale, or exchange, or otherwise, and receive and administer the proceeds as a part of my estate.

3. To vote stock, to exercise any option or privilege to convert bonds, notes, stocks or other securities belonging to my estate into other bonds, notes, stocks or other securities, and to exercise all other rights and privilege of a person owning similar property.

4. To lease any real property in my estate.

5. To abandon, adjust, arbitrate, compromise, sue on or defend and otherwise deal with and settle claims in favor of or against my estate.

6. To continue or participate in any business which is a part of my estate and to incorporate, dissolve or otherwise change the form of organization of the business.

The powers, authority and discretion I grant to my executor are intended to be in addition to the powers, authority and discretion vested in him or her by operation of law by virtue of his or her office, and may be exercised as often as is deemed necessary or viable without application to or approved by any court.

Payment of Debts

Except for liens and encumbrances placed on property as security of the repayment of a loan or debt, I want all debts and expenses owed by my estate to be paid in the manner provided for by the laws of California.

Payment of Taxes

I want all estate and inheritance taxes assessed against property in my estate or against any beneficiaries to be paid out of all the property in my taxable estate, on a pro-rata basis.

No Contest Provision

If any beneficiary under this will contests this will or any of its provision, any share or interest in my estate given to the contesting beneficiary under this will is revoked and shall be disposed of as if that contesting beneficiary had not survived me.

Severability

If any provision of this will is held invalid, that shall not affect other provisions that can be given effect without the invalid provision.

I, James V. Valenti, the testator, sign my name to this instrument this 28th day of October 2018 at San Marcos, CA. I declare that I sign and execute this instrument as my last will, that I sign it willingly, and that I execute it as my free and voluntary act. I want to see you when you have a minute – right now.” Such pronunciations tickled America at large and endeared him to a vast viewing audience. Another ‘Welk-ism’ was when he said, “Now, for my accordion solo. Myron, will you join me?”

On the other hand, Lawrence Welk was a stern disciplinarian and taskmaster. He once fired Alice Lon (the show’s “Champagne Lady” at the time) for dressing in a fashion where she was showing too much leg. Welk told the live audience that he would not tolerate such “cheesecake” performances on his show! However, Lawrence Welk did not anticipate public reaction which positioned itself against him! Ensuing fan mail, overwhelmingly, demanded that Alice Lon be re-hired! Welk valiantly tried to persuade Alice Lon to return but his attempts to re-hire her would prove fruitless. It would prove to be an indelible mark against Welk and his once-adoring public had glimpsed his dark side. Firing a woman during an actual performance in front of his audience was not to be tolerated by wide-ranging Americans.

Lawrence Welk, whose automobile license plate read: “A1ANA2” was based on his signature lead-in line to his orchestra, “And a one, and a two . . .”

Lawrence Welk died in 1992 at age 89. Despite his faux pas in firing his Champagne Lady in front of a live audience, he soon experienced a resurgence in popularity on television re-runs, even long after his death.

The cornucopia of sights, sounds, and excitement which Escondido County offers almost overwhelms in its depth and rich variety! From Broadway plays, musicals, magic shows, etc. at the California Center for the Arts Escondido or the everpopular annual Friday night Cruisin’ Grand tradition (every Friday from April thru September) there is something for everyone to enjoy! The vastly famous and popular Cruisin’ Grand is where dream cars, hot rods,

MIGHTY MOJO

vintage vehicles of all types, including antiques, and rare custom automobiles, fill Grand Avenue at night like brightly colored ornaments adorning the streets. In short, there is much to experience and enjoy and create ‘forever-memories.’ Cruisin’ Grand has been described as a “timewarp experience which physically hits downtown Escondido, sending onlookers in a Blast-to-the-Past celebration featuring rock ‘n’ roll music and even dancing and hula-hoop contests!”

The surrounding bistros, pubs, and beautiful restaurants are all there taunting, teasing, and beckoning you to come within and enjoy your favourite foods, or beverage.

These changing dynamics in Escondido’s landscape make it an eclectic jewel which attracts new elements, and new burgeoning businesses!

Escondido City offers a tremendously wide-variety of sites, events, historical footnotes, museums, and live entertainment that have drawn the rich, the famous, scientists, inventors, sports figures, and all those in-between, to this region of ours to live or just visit!

All of this, and much more, have caused many residents to proudly proclaim: “Home Sweet Home, Escondido.”

Music Men Seeking a Few good men for Holiday Concerts

Do you enjoy singing? Did you sing in a chorus in high school or college, and would you like to be in a chorus again? Would you like to be able to sing in a show for family, friends, and neighbors?

The Music Men Chorus has an offer for you: a chance to sing as a full participant in our Holiday chorus show for free and with no obligation to join!

The Music Men Chorus is a men’s “a cappella” (NO ACCOMPANIMENT) chorus that performs 4-part, close-harmony songs arranged in the unique Barbershop

court clerk for a fee waiver form. If you do not file your response on time, you may lose the case by default, and your wages, money, and property may be taken without further warning from the court. There are other legal requirements. You may want to call an attorney right away. If you do not know an attorney, you may want to call an attorney referral service. If you cannot afford an attorney, you may be eligible for free legal services from a nonprofit legal services program. You can locate these nonprofit groups at the California Legal Services Web site (www.lawhelpcalifornia. org), the California Courts Online Self-Help Center (www.courtinfo. ca.gov/selfhelp), or by contacting your local court or county bar association. NOTE: The court has a statutory lien for waived fees and costs on any settlement or arbitration award of $10,000 or more in a civil case. The court’s lien must be paid before the court will dismiss the case. AVISO! Lo han demandado. Si no responde dentro de 30 dias, la corte puede decidir en su contra sin escuchar su version. We are looking for male singers, middle-school age or older, who LOVE SINGING and who are interested in singing in a chorus. We are offering them an opportunity to sing at one or more of our December holiday concerts if they:

• Attend several rehearsals a month between July and the end of the year.

• Learn a core group of Holiday songs to be sung with and without music.

• Commit to sing in some of our concerts in early December.

The Music Men rehearse Tuesdays from 7:00-9:30 PM at San Marcos Lutheran Church, 3419 Grand Avenue, in Luther Hall. The rehearsal is open, meaning there is NO FORMAL AUDITION, JUST A SIMPLE VOICE CHECK! We will provide sheet music and access to audio learning tracks to help you learn your voice part. We will also provide a weekly rehearsal agenda to help you focus your practicing at home.

New singers who meet the requirements above can sing with the chorus at one or both of our Christmas concerts, Sunday December 7 in Carlsbad and Sunday December 14 in San Marcos.

Come to any of our rehearsals starting in July. For more information contact Bill Olszanicky at wolszanicky@yahoo.com or (760) 585-6315. Visit our website, www. musicmenchorus.org.

offers more and is more successful, creating a conflict of jealousy with his brother. When one child receives more attention than another, conflict can arise, leading to anger, bitterness, and hatred. This insidious envy and jealousy tear families apart. It all begins by wanting more than what God offers. That was Eve’s problem, and it spilled over into Cain’s life. It became a family of conflict. It is the same conflict that humanity shares as a family.

Is this the inevitable outcome of all families? Is conflict a way of life? One day, a man came to Jesus and asked Him to divide the family inheritance with him. But He said to him. “Who appointed me a judge over the two of you?” And He said to him, “Beware and be on your guard; against every form of greed, for not even when one is affluent, does his life consist of his possessions” Luke 12:13-15.
