Statistics say it’s not if, but when you’ll have a heart attack. Are you ready?
Larry Snider was cleaning the garage. “I’d just put my garden tools away when a sharp pain in my chest knocked me to the concrete floor. I was unconscious for maybe ten seconds. The pain vanished quickly. I felt silly. Why was I doing down here? I tried to get up, but my legs were too weak. I texted my wife. She helped me to a chair, and insisted
we call 911. At the hospital the doctors ran all sorts of tests – I’d had a heart attack. A week later they put two stents in my heart.
I feel great now, but rolling around on the floor scared the bejesus out of me.”
Don Carroll’s Story
Don Carroll was on the 71 Freeway when a “Pain worse than anything I’d ever experienced hit my chest and back. I couldn’t breathe.” Don managed to pull to the side of the
freeway and stop his car before he passed out. An emergency vehicle noticed his car was still running and honked.
When Don didn’t respond, the ambulance driver approached his car, saw immediately Don was in distress, and began resuscitation efforts. Don survived the heart attack. Two weeks later he underwent bypass surgery.
Don’s advice?
“Pay attention to your body. My
fingertips often tingled. After climbing a flight of stairs I’d be short of breathe. At times, I’d feel bloated. I ignored these warning signs – attributing the bloating to indigestion, tingling fingertips to poor circulation, the shortness of breath to being out of shape. Today, I know my body was trying to warn me. Seeing a doctor earlier would have made my plight a lot easier.”

dena Freeway when a pain seized my lower right rib cage, radiated up my shoulder, paralyzing my right arm. Breathing was difficult, my mouth filled with saliva, sweat peppered my face.
Nancy noticed my distress. “You okay?”
“Bad pain.” Was all l could manage.
Nancy maneuvered the car to the side of the freeway. I opened the door, and released the saliva.
The pain miraculously disappeared. “My hernia’s acting up,” I told myself. We continued our journey, but Monday morning -Veteran’s Day - Nancy insisted we go to the VA’s emergency room. Sixteen hours later I underwent triple bypass heart surgery. My recovery is a testament to modern medicine – I’ve lost weight, upped my exercise routine, cleaned up my diet and today, some 7 months since surgery, the whole episode feels like a bad dream.

is the leading cause of death in the United States, particularly for males 55 and over. If you smoke, drink - even a little bit – visit McDonald’s or other fast-food emporiums often, and exercise less than 30 minutes a day, you’re headed for trouble. As an RN at the VA hospital in West Los Angeles said, “It may take a while, but a poor diet, stress, and little exercise will eventually extract a toll on your health.”
Deaths from heart disease in the U.S. numbered 702,880 in 2022. Heart disease’s close friend, strokes (cerebrovascular diseases), added 165,393 deaths. There’s a strong correlation between those with heart disease and those diagnosed with diabetes, which registered 101,209 deaths in 2022. (Source: Mortality in the United States, 2022.)
Heart disease is responsible for 20 percent of all deaths in the United States – and is more common among men. Do you have a family history of heart disease? Are you overweight? Is your exercise or walking schedule one of “I’ll start tomorrow.” Are you age 55 or over?

• coronary artery disease (blocked arteries)

A heart attack, or myocardial infarction, is a serious medical emergency where the heart muscle is damaged due to reduced blood flow. Symptoms can vary, but common signs include chest pain or discomfort, shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, and dizziness. Some individuals may experience atypical symptoms, such as back pain, nausea, or fatigue, this is particularly true for women. And don’t ignore tingling fingertips, hands or arms that ‘go to sleep,’ and a bloated feeling.
If you’re vulnerable for heart disease what precautions can you take? The most frequently given advice, as unwelcome as it may be, is change your Lifestyle. This means doing the following, at a minimum:

What if you wait too long to get help and surgery is needed? Welcome to the club. Some two million Americans undergo heart surgery each year. One of the more frequent operation is Open-heart Surgery.
Open-heart surgery can treat heart failure, arrhythmias, aneurysms and coronary artery disease.
It’s procedures may include CABG (coronary artery bypass surgery), heart transplant, valve replacement and surgeries to correct birth defects. According to a new cardiac surgery study by iData Research, the number of cardiac surgeries in the US exceeds 2,800,000 procedures yearly, with projections reaching 4,000,000 by 2029.
Open heart surgery is a major surgical procedure. It involves opening the chest and performing surgery on the muscles, valves, or arteries of the heart. Here’s a step-

by-step overview of what typically happens:
1. Preparation and Anesthesia
• The patient is placed under general anesthesia to ensure they are unconscious and painfree during the operation.
• The chest area is cleaned and sterilized.
• The surgeon makes a long incision down the chest and splits the sternum (breastbone) to access the heart.
• A retractor is used to hold the chest open.
3. Cardiopulmonary Bypass (Heart-Lung Machine)
• The patient is connected to a heart-lung machine, which takes over the function of the heart and lungs, oxygenating the blood and circulating it throughout the body.
• A cold solution – cardioplegiais typically used to stop the heart from beating, thus making it easier and safer to operate on.
4. Surgical Procedure
Depending on the underlying condition, the surgeon may:
• Bypass blocked arteries using a graft from another part of the body (as in coronary artery bypass grafting, or CABG). For my operation, 3 veins were harvested – 2 from my right leg, 1 from my left.
• Repair or replace a heart valve.
• Repair congenital heart defects.
• Remove tumors or perform other structural repairs.
5. Restarting the Heart
After the repair, the heart restarts spontaneously or with a small electric shock.
• The patient is gradually taken off the heart-lung machine once the heart functions properly.
6. Closing the Chest
• The sternum is closed using Super Glue, sutures or staples.
• Drainage tubes may be left in place temporarily to remove fluids.
7. Recovery
• The patient is moved from the Operating Room to intensive care unit (ICU) for closer monitoring.
• Full recovery takes months, de-
pending on the patient’s physical condition and the complexity of the surgery. During recovery, the patient may experience episodes of vertigo, fatigue, loss of balance, difficulty in sleeping, nausea, and sensitivity to loud noise.
• Weight monitoring – involves weighing oneself at the same time each day, while wearing no clothes and before breakfast. It’s also important to monitor blood pressure, pulse and breaths per minute at least once a day.
Open heart surgery is a complex and delicate operation, but it can be lifesaving and in most patients significantly improve quality of life. In my case, my surgeon predicted I’d return to a vigorous and dynamic life style. That has happened, and I am grateful.
Certain discomforts or inconveniences will occur after surgery. The most frequent ones are:
• Constipation – often due to meds or lack of physical exercise
• Depression – Mood Swings
• Loss of appetite – this may continue for 2 to 4 weeks
• Memory Problems – i.e., forgetting dates and important events; this problem often self corrects after several months
• Muscle pain in the chest or incision area
• Tiredness – this is a universal compliant of many Open-heart patients; this condition seems to last for 6 to 8 months
All of these discomforts are treatable – some will correct themselves – so relax and let your body do its thing.
The actual time for an Open-heart procedure depends on several factors – the procedure your team selected, facility availability and when the surgery is performed. In general, we’re talking six to seven hours from anesthesia to ICU. Fentanyl, or other opioid is often administered during the operation.
After the procedure, the patient is moved into intensive care unit (ICU) for a 3 to 5 day stay, then moved to a regular hospital room for another 3 to 5 days. The medical team is busy during these times, running tests, assessing the effectiveness of certain medicines, seeing that patient walks twice daily and can tolerate food. Instructions on incision care, how to cough and

The Best Barbecued Beef I’ve Ever Had
Last week I ordered a plate of bbq beef from The Wrangler Restaurant, 1644 East Valley Parkway, Escondido. The very generously sized plate of barbecued beef offered beef that was so tender you could cut it with a plastic spoon. Knives not needed !
This beef plate was the artistic work of Jose Martian, the BBQ Pitmaster who knows how to prepare meat. My colleague had the bbq ham plate and he, too, raved!
The Wrangler has been around a long time but it’s now under new ownership; Jose Fuentes is the proud new owner. He and his family acquired the restaurant recently. First order of business? Clean the place up! Repaint, redecorate, redesign the menu and focus on turning out fine, fine barbecued meats!
They have accomplished those goals. All of them.
Today, El Flako’s Wrangler Restaurant is a proud, clean, shiny new facility with the best bbq you’ll ever find in San Diego County.
Whether it’s ribs, beef, pulled pork or ham . . . you’re gonna get only
the best! Generous servings with extra bbq sauce . . . served up by a friendly staff of Sherry and Alex Fuentes, (Jose Fuentes’ nephew) . . and all prepared under the watchful eye of pitmaster Jose Martian! Dine in, order to go, or they also do catering!

Speaking of great restaurants I was shocked and saddened to see that Fish House Vera Cruz has closed its doors. Lots of talented cooks and servers out of work . . . and great food now only memories. Often, we would dine at Fish House Vera Cruz. Our favorite was the Atlantic Cod plate . .but that went off menu when they could no longer get Atlantic Cod from their supplier.
A bit pricey but the food was always top notch . . prepared over hickory fires where you could watch your meal being prepared. The owners issued a public letter, apologizing to staff and customers but they simply could no longer stay in business; rising food costs and labor costs, plus some pretty healthy rental payments . . all added up.
Many great meals and great memories . . . now just a memory. Thank you to the owners and their staff for some wonderful years.

A friend back in Omaha asked me what I though about what was going on in LA.
This was my answer:
Well, normally, I view myself as a moderate conservative; on this issue I’m a hard assed conservative. I think Trump did exactly the right thing by calling in the National Guard and now, the Marines. Further, I think a Marine sniper or two, properly positioned, with a green light to shoot to kill whenever some idiot torches a car . . word will spread quickly and the torch-
ing of cars stops. Now.
And, I think you’d se a lot less serious “protests.” Bystanders and innocent observers are not gonna torch cars. Idiots are. You need to take control right away.
As I see wide angle shots I see a large number of police officers and guardsmen . . . most of the other folks (about 85-90%) are simply there to watch and, maybe, peacefully process. The remainder are jerks and paid demonstrators that need to be brought up short.
News media is partially to blame . . with directors telling camera crews to focus on crowds of 15-20 people, and, typically, crowds of loud mouths and trouble makers. If the camera crew pulls back you see that this group is a very small percentage of the whole.
Governor Newsom and the LA Mayor are both useless. This required strong leadership and it has arrived.
Don’t always agree with Trump and Musk. This time, Trump got it right.
The Birthday Girl
Ever since Alex was 8 or 9 years old we celebrated her birthday by gathering together at “Love Boat Sushi.”
Last night I took Alex and daddy Ken, me and Mary to celebrate her 14th birthday. Seems like just yesterday that we brought her home from the hospital.
I introduced Ken to sushi; at first, he didn’t like it . . .but he learned to love it. As do I. As does Alex.
Very pleasant, though expensive, evening.
Wound up investing $150 but, to me, that’s better than buying a bunch of gifts; far better for family to come together over a delicious meal.

Please be respectful, limit your letter to a maximum of 300 words and include your full name, email address, town, and a valid phone number where you can be reached. I ordered the “Love Boat,” which says it serves 3 to 4. Bah! It could have fed 5 or 6. So much delicious food. We brought home 3 takeout boxes as we were all stuffed. The “Love Boat” was $85 but after drinks and tip . .we spent $150.
Love seeing Alex but she has her own life now; grandpa gets to see her 3, maybe 4 times a year. Enjoy every moment with her.
I had posted here a year or so ago about my experiences serving as a war correspondent in Vietnam in 1967 and 1968. One of the highlights was going on a fighter strike mission in the Mekong Delta with three F-100’s.
I flew back seat on one of those F100’s and the pilot asked me if, after we finished our bomb run and strafing attack, if I wanted to take the controls and fly the plane for a bit.
A private pilot? (With all of 140 flight hours!) Taking the controls of a War Bird?
Hell yes, I did! Damn few civilians get that opportunity.
Unfortunately, there is a code of conduct amongst fighter pilots that goes something like this . . . “Let’s see if we can make the war correspondent airsick.”
I had partied with a bunch of helicopter pilots the night before, long into the wee morning hours. (So much for the myth that pilots don’t consume alcohol in a combat zone prior to flying a mission . . . ) The chopper pilots headed out for an “insertion” (dropping troops into an LZ [landing zone]) at 0-dark thirty. About the same time as a young, somewhat hungover correspondent was embarking on a combat flight in an F100.
They put me into a G-Suit (to

sneeze, get in and out of bed, and sit in a chair are important topics of discussion.
Normal risks are:
• Allergic reaction to anesthesia
• Arrhythmias – irregular heartbeat
• Bleeding
• Damage to surrounding blood vessels or internal organs – lungs, kidneys
• Infections
• Blood clots
• Stroke
Note: Those who smoke or use tobacco products are more susceptible to postsurgical issues. Longterm pain after open-heart surgery is rare. But anxiety and depression may cause the patient distress. In my case, I had night-time hallucinations - a square utility box became a minion chasing me; foreign languages spoken by the night crew provoked intense dreams that I was a prisoner of war. If depression or anxiety continues for more than a week, the health care team will probably order a change in medications or other solutions. Numbness of body parts is rare, but pain in the hands or arms may occur from stretched or pinched nerves. These go away after a few days in most cases.
Man About Town from page 4
keep me from passing out when we pulled a large number of G’s (gravitational pull) . . combat helmet and a 38 caliber pistol in case we were shot down or otherwise had to abandon the aircraft. (What in the hell a 38 caliber pistol would do against Viet Cong with AK47’s was beyond me).
We took off, can’t remember if it was Bien Hoa or Ton Sohn Nhut Air Base . . . and headed for the delta. We pulled around 5 or 6 G’s as we made our bomb runs, dropping 500 lb. fragmentation bombs and/or napalm canisters. First we went in and ‘beat up the area’ with 20mm shells . . . then the bombs. We made three of four attack and then headed upstairs to burn off some excess fuel before returning to base.
The bomb runs and the G forces had begun to get to me. Not content with that, the pilot did several aerobatic maneuvers, rolls, all kinds of stunts. My stomach rebelled.
Open-heart surgery is major surgery, because the heart is needed to keep blood moving throughout the body. No matter how gentle the surgeon may be, one’s body has been abused, and certain small pains or soreness will result. Personally, I’d not wish open-heart surgery on my worst enemy, but I’m grateful for the skilled doctors, nurses and technicians who performed this lifesaving procedure on me.
Remember this – one never reverses heart failure, as one is reminded often in recovery. Thus, for those of us who undergo Open-heart we’re in it for the long haul – recovery is a life time process.
Medical authorities in their wisdom don’t speak of heart issues, instead they talk about heart failure and moderating the effects of the damaged heart. The often speak of ‘remodeling the heart.” This is accomplished by administering the appropriate drugs. As a talking point, in most cases it takes 4 to 8 months (and sometimes longer), for a full return of health. Those who engage in daily exercise, possess a resilient personality and have a positive outlook on life seem to recover more quickly.
The American Heart Association has helpful information available
on-line – if you can get past all their appeals for donations. They hold peer group meetings via Zoom and sponsor forums where experts answer questions and dispense pertinent information, so the patient is not alone on their journey; recovery from Open-heart surgery, like all recovery, is an inside job.
Concerned about returning to work, or increasing your exercise? Your health care team will keep you informed on these issues. Not driving a car for six weeks, or riding in the rear seat of the vehicle while being transported are good suggestions. Not lifting an object over 10 pounds for six weeks after surgery is also a good policy to follow. Often, a patient may experience mild nausea in the morning. This will dissipate usually after five or six weeks. However, if one suffers severe vomiting, chest pain, fever, shortness of breath, or signs of infection such as oozing, angry redness at the incision, call the doctor. Slurred speech may be a sign of a stroke, so caution is advised.

For generations, parents have shared one simple hope — that their children will have a better life than they did. That’s the American Dream. But right here in San Diego County, that dream is slipping further out of reach.
Families are being squeezed like never before, and the numbers back it up. A recent Pew study found that 72% of Americans believe it’s harder today to save for the future than it was for their parents. Another 71% say paying for college has become harder, while 70% say buying a home is more difficult than it was for previous generations.
These aren’t just statistics — they reflect the real struggles facing working families across our communities. Young people are asking how they’ll ever be able to afford a home, pay off student loans, and build a secure future in the county they grew up in. Many are being forced to move away altogether.
That’s exactly why I’ve made affordability one of my top priorities as your Supervisor.
We’re working to cut unnecessary red tape and reduce fees that drive up housing costs, while pushing back against policies that keep adding to the tax burden on working families. And we’re making sure County government lives within its means, because every dollar wasted by government is a dollar taken out of the pockets of hardworking taxpayers.
The American Dream should not become something our kids only read about in history books. It should remain real and achievable — right here in San Diego County. I’m committed to making sure this remains a place where families can live, work, and thrive — not get priced out.
And I won’t stop fighting to protect that future for the next generation.

Medicare fraud and abuse can happen anywhere. It’s important that you protect your Medicare card, number, and other personal information, and check your Medicare claims regularly.
To help spot and prevent Medicare fraud and abuse:
• Compare the dates and services on your calendar with the Medicare statements you get to make sure you got each service listed and that all the details are correct.
• Protect your personal information and become familiar with how Medicare uses it.
• Know what a Medicare health or drug plan can and can’t do before you join. If you join a Medicare health or drug plan, the plan will let you know how it will use your personal information.
Do:
• Check the receipts and statements you get from providers for mistakes, and call your provider’s office if you think a charge is incorrect.
• Remember that Medicare will never call you to sell you anything or visit you at your home. Medicare, or someone representing Medicare, will only call and ask for personal information in limited situations (like an agent or representative returning your call after you’ve joined a plan, reported fraud, or left a message for Medicare).
If you suspect fraud call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800633-4227) or Report Medicare Fraud online.
If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan or Medicare drug plan you can also call the Investigations Medicare Drug Integrity Contractor (I-MEDIC) at 1-877-7SAFERX (1-877-772-3379).
Protect Yourself From medical identity Theft
Medical identity theft is a serious crime that happens when someone uses your personal information without your consent to commit Medicare fraud or other crimes. Use the following tips to protect yourself from becoming a victim.
Don’t:
• Give your Medicare card, Medicare Number, Social Security card, or Social Security Number to anyone except your doctor or people you know should have it (like insurers acting on your behalf or people who work with Medicare, like your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP)
• Accept offers of money or gifts for free medical care.
• Allow anyone, except your doctor or other Medicare providers, to review your medical records or recommend services.
• Join a Medicare health or drug plan over the phone, unless you called and asked for help.

When Ashley Hampton traveled to New Orleans recently, she worried about security.
“I wanted to make sure I stayed in a safe part of town,” she says.
She’s not alone. A recent survey by Global Rescue revealed that petty crime and personal safety threats ranked number two on the list of traveler concerns for 2025, eclipsed only by geopolitical instability. (In third place were economic instability or rising travel costs.)
But for travelers like Hampton, there’s another issue, and it’s front and center this summer: How do I know if my next vacation rental is in a safe neighborhood?
“Safety is the top concern of travelers as we head into the summer travel season,” says Michael Trampas, the executive vice president of business development and marketing at Rentyl Resorts.
He says numerous surveys show guests are worried that they might find themselves in a rental in the wrong neighborhood, and they want to avoid that. There are triedand-true strategies, a few resourc-
es unknown to most travelers, and a checklist of things you’ll always want to do before renting a home.
Actually, crime in vacation rentals is a complicated topic. It turns out that vacation rental guests aren’t the only ones who should be concerned with this problem. Owners should, too. Some guests also use their rentals to commit crimes, in-

cluding stealing from their hosts, also known as burglary tourism. So, before we get into it, a quick acknowledgment that some rental guests are far from perfect.
So how to stay safe?
How One Traveler Found Safe Accommodations
Hampton, a psychologist from Birmingham, Ala., planned a short visit to New Orleans.
“I knew I was relying on public transportation, walking, or an Uber,” she says.
She used one of the most reliable methods in the book: a careful internet search.
“I searched for the local police station and then googled the name of that station with the search term ‘crime statistics,’ looking for specific overlap with the street names near where I was staying,” she recalls. “The information I found was related to petty theft, like pickpocketing and breaking into cars, so I felt reasonably safe an Uber ride door to door would be OK.”
That’s the right call, says Christopher Falvey, co-founder of Unique NOLA Tours, a New Orleans tour operator.
“If you’re going to research crime statistics, always ask yourself: Are these crimes against visitors and regular people -- or crimes between people who know each other,” he says. “This is not something you’ll ever see listed, but it can be inferred.
He says there are neighborhoods in New Orleans that some con-
sider “unsafe” based on statistics, “but I can tell you for sure that a random person with no link to the neighborhood will not be bothered at all,” he adds.
And Hampton was right. Her trip went off without a hitch.
Check the rental’s rating
Actually, you can learn a lot about your rental by reading the listing.
“Checking the rating of an accommodation in advance is a good practice,” says Frank Harrison, regional security director for the Americas at World Travel Protection.
He’s right. I practically live in vacation rentals, so I have a lot of practice with reading between the lines on user reviews.
For example, I rented an apartment in Athens from Vrbo a few years ago. The user reviews described it as being in an “eclectic” neighborhood. That should have been a red flag. It turns out the vacation rental was in a run-down and dangerous part of town. Fortunately, the owner offered a full refund after I refused to stay in the place.
Other warning words include “vibrant,” especially if it’s a reference to nightlife. That can sometimes mean trouble. And finally, when guests admiringly describe the home’s security features, like upgraded locks, security cameras, and private security, you have to ask yourself, “Why is that even necessary?”
Point is, you can sometimes figure out if a vacation rental is dangerous by carefully reading the reviews.
How do you get information about crime?
But there are other resources. Here are a few sites for finding safety information about your neighborhood.
AreaVibes, a real estate site, has some crime data that will answer big questions, like, “Is this area safe?” But it lacks the street-level detail some travelers might want when looking at a vacation rental. You can also find general crime statistics on other real estate sites like Zillow or Redfin.
Niche, an education site, also offers crime data. The statistics are easy to find and can provide a

Ever since its discovery circa 3000BC, silver has remained synonymous with wealth. Numbeo is a platform that lets you compare information about crime levels worldwide. It also surveys users on their sentiments about crime, which can offer some guidance if you’re concerned about safety.
The Trace, a journalism site about gun violence, publishes an atlas of gun violence that allows you to drill down to an address level to find out if there’s been a shooting at your rental address.
World Travel Index is a travelplanning tool, but has rich data on crime and answers simple questions like, “Are scams a problem in New York.” You can check specific neighborhoods and addresses for crime, including vacation rentals. It also identifies the safest neighborhoods with the help of an AI tool.
Tom Abraham, founder of World Travel Index, told me the problem is that there just aren’t any reliable resources on crime at a local level -- at least the kind that would be useful to a traveler. That’s where AI can be a useful tool, culling other resources such as forums and social media to find useful information.
In fact, AI may be able to answer any questions you have about crime in your vacation rental’s neighborhood far more eloquently than a database you could find online.
There are other resources, but they require a subscription. John Rose, the chief risk officer at Altour, a global corporate travel management company, recommends Crisis 24, Exlog Global and International SOS.

“They offer current, fact-based intelligence on local crime trends, health advisories, and other security concerns so you can make informed decisions about where to stay,” he says.
So is your vacation rental safe?
You can check your vacation rental’s ratings and study the neighborhood’s crime statistics, but in the end, safety isn’t about eliminating all risk. It’s about being smart.
That means checking to ensure your rental has basic security features, like lockable doors and windows, says Alex Foti, president of Bretton Woods Vacations, a management company with more than 130 properties in New Hampshire. (His rentals have them, of course.)
“We haven’t had a single crimerelated issue while we host over 20,000 guests per year,” he says.
Technology is changing how vacation rental guests approach travel safety. AI, local crime databases, and user-generated content are giving travelers unprecedented insights into potential risks. But ultimately, you are responsible for your own safety. And the way to do that is to stay informed, trust your instincts, and do your homework before booking your next rental.

In a friendly conversation, I was discussing retirement with a friend. My friend, who has been retired for at least six years, told me how bored she was with not only her retirement but also with life. Boredom is a major problem affecting thousands of retirees today. As that group continues to grow, many sociologists and psychologists are finding a lucrative field of patients who want to do something about the problem. It is actually a bigger problem than filling time in retirement. It really is having a meaningful life every day we live. Boredom is a killer. A more significant challenge is achieving a happy and fulfilling life, regardless of whether we are retired or not. More free time is not the answer. Filling that time with more than television or inactivity is the challenge. In this, I doubt that there is a problem of having nothing to do. There is always something to do. The secret is knowing what to do and how to get to it.
Years ago, an elderly retired friend gave me a secret to combat boredom. She said that one of the most important things to do is to have something to live for and, with that, to have something to get up for as one faces a new day. I have found this to be very true, not only in my own life but also in the lives of those who find life boring and unsatisfactory. When the Disciples of Jesus wanted to quit and idle their time away, Jesus said, ‘We have many people to see and minister to in other villages.’ There always seemed to be a plan for Jesus to fulfill. To follow His example, it is essential to have an agenda that calls for action. It is something to look forward to, whether it be a chore, a trip to visit someone, a letter to write, an exercise to practice, an article or book to read, a set time to reflect or meditate, a plan for an activity, an act to improve one’s environment, a deed to help someone, a phone call to make which has been neglected, or just about anything that could better use your time with a meaningful act that will surely break the boredom. There is always something to do or plan to fill the void of time and lack of fulfillment.
A step to take is to create a list of tasks to accomplish and then follow through on them. If one follows this procedure, there will hardly be enough time for boredom to set in. There is always more to do than time permits. Having an objective will do that. Working to fill it is even better. I have found that the best example for all of this is God. I don’t know how it was with God before He created the world, but once He decided to do it, He followed a plan. We have it recorded in the book of Genesis that as He completed one day, He moved to the next day. He must have been excited as He anticipated what He would do the next day. There was no time for boredom. When it was all completed, He rested. That rest was not forever. Jesus said, “My Father is working until now, and I, Myself, am working.” John. 5:17. Obviously, there was always something to look forward to. We can share in that experience. It will keep us from boredom.

Meet Chogath! This resilient pup has come a long way since entering our care. Initially fearful and sensitive to handling, Chogath has made great progress, built trusting relationships with staff and has become more comfortable in new environments. She is a smart pup who already knows sit and lay down, and loves to learn with the help of tasty treats. Chogath will thrive in a calm home where she can have the time and space she needs to open up at her own pace, ideally without the hustle and bustle of young children or lots of visitors. If you’re ready to open your heart and home to this sweet girl, Chogath (944311) is available for adoption at San Diego Humane Society’s Escondido Campus at 3500 Burnet Dr. If you have questions about the adoption process, you can visit sdhumane.org/adopt or call 619-299-7012.

Each new important technology in man’s ever growing tool kit brings cries of alarm and a clamor to ban or limit its use fearing an “existential threat” (a threat to man’s existence). Nuclear weapons roused a large pacifist following in the mid 20th century and gave us the “Ban the Bomb” movement. In earlier ages, machine guns, gunpowder catapults and cross bows each took their turn with others as the “doomsday” weapon of the period. Each created a flurry of concern until succeeded by the next “existential threat”. Nuclear weapons have been our latest worldwide “existential threat” holding that position for the past 80 years. The nuclear armed Western bloc of nations are in a “Mexican Standoff” with the Communist bloc, each fearing mutual destruction in the event of conflict.
Every spring for the last quarter of a century, I’ve issued a media release warning pet owners about the danger of rattlesnakes. I decided NOT to do it this year until my friend Martha sent this message. “Here’s a hot topic for you. Rattle snakes, rattle snakes and rattle snakes!” I really like Martha. She’s smart. When she speaks, I listen.
She said, “They are EVERYWHERE. Even in the grassy area of the parks.”
She wants other dog owners to know these things:
Yet there is another and perhaps more serious long term threat to life on this, our home planet.
Earth’s human population hit an all time high at 1.0 billion in 1800. Today (2025) Earth’s population has octupled to over 8.0 billion. Along with the population increase we’ve also witnessed the arrival of air, train and automobile travel, central heating, rivers dammed for electric power, coal, gas and oil to provide fuel and heat and the use of fossil water to grow food in deserts. We’ve also seen the removal of a third of the world’s forests for agriculture and urban expansion. In the past century we’ve dramatically accelerated our impact as the major source of environmental degradation on our planet.
Worldwide ocean and atmospheric temperatures have increased by 2.0 degrees Fahrenheit, ocean levels have risen 8 inches, coral reef are dying, our garbage and waste pollutes rivers, lakes and oceans, heat trapping atmospheric CO2 has increase by 50% and the Arctic Ocean has lost 60% of its sea ice. These are among early signs that we may be facing a serious man made problem. We are seeing early warning signs that the Anthropogenic Age (The Age of Man) may be an existential threat to us.
Doing something about Earth’s potential problem faces a very human problem. The first and shrillest voice are almost always the doomsday alarms from the politically Liberal
“Chicken Little’s” panicked cries to “Shut it down, turn it off, stop doing it before it kills us.” are met with the ridicule from equal numbers of Conservative “Do Nothing” skeptics who posit that changes are part of nature’s cycles and interfering with them is just plain stupid. The “Chicken Little” and “Do Nothing“ dust-up represents neither mainstream Liberal or Conservative views but their early warnings warrant investigation. Now is the time for cooler heads to evaluate the problem, quiet the destructive kneejerk reactions from “Chicken little liberals” and rouse the attention of the “Do Nothing Conservatives”.
Earths environmental problems are most likely of our own making and, if true, will require a concerted effort to fix before it’s too late. This requires an informed population, working together to address an existential threat. In human history to date, this level of cooperation has never been achieved.
Throughout our history we have typically paid more attention to the things that divide us than to the things that join us. Race, religion, language, geographic location and politics divide us. Some of us are fiercely independent and jealously
guard our freedoms while others quietly accept governance that enforces conformity. No matter what environment we live or grew up in, we started life the same way. We are all the same species, Homo Sapiens, and there is nothing inherent in our nature that prevents us from working together to accomplish a common goal.
In the last 25 years two events occurred that hold the promise of helping us work together to avert this Existential threat, The IW (Intelligent Web) combines the WWW (World Wide Web) with AI (artificial intelligence). The IW has the potential to anywise the entire of human knowledge base with an intelligence potentially unfettered by human bias and prejudice. The IWs objective judgments, conclusions and recommendation might just be acceptable to humans who are eternally suspicious of a hidden agenda behind the plans of our fellow man. Our house is on fire. We can let it burn and hope for the best, tear it down and start over, or we can work together to find the best way to put the fire out. Which way will we go? It will take generations of study, discipline and commitment to fix our “house” so we had better get started.

• DO NOT approach them or let your pet get close. A rattlesnake can jump twice the length of its body.
• Rattlesnake bites can be deadly.
• Sometimes snakes rattle to let you know you’re too close. Sometimes they don’t.
• Find a veterinarian near your home who has anti-venom. Not all veterinarians keep it.
• If you hike with your dog, take rattlesnake training. It could save your pet’s life.
We’ve been friends for years but never talked about this. I asked why she was so adamant about it now. “Unfortunately, one of our neighbors just lost a puppy due to a bite.”
Here are more tips to avoid rattlesnake bite.
• Sunset is when you’re most likely to encounter a rattlesnake.
• People need footwear that gives protection.
• Keep your dog on a leash and on a well-used trail.
• Carry a stick. Hitting the bushes can scare snakes away.
• Don’t go where there are likely to be snakes.
• Don’t put your paws, hands or feet where you can’t see (like under a log or rock.)
• Look before you leap. Step ON a rock or log instead of jumping over it.
• Put down your cell phone! Pay attention!
• If you stop to rest, look before you sit.
• Be careful around water. Snakes can swim and they look like sticks.
• If you see a snake...LEAVE IT ALONE!
What should you do if you or your pet are bitten by a rattler? Try not to panic or run. It spreads the venom faster. Get to the doctor ASAP.
Try to remember what the snake looks like. How big, what color, shape of head, and anything else you can tell the vet.
That old tale about sucking the venom out of a snake bite? Don’t. It doesn’t work and I hear it tastes nasty.

For many drivers, maintaining their vehicle is an afterthought, at least until that moment when their mechanic calls with the bad news: “You need new brakes.”
Brake jobs have become increasingly expensive, sometimes running into the thousands of dollars depending on the vehicle. But much of that wear and tear, and the high repair bills that follow, can be directly linked to something few drivers give serious thought to, their driving habits.
Driving habits play a major role in how long your brakes last. From racing between stoplights to slamming on the brakes in traffic, small choices made behind the wheel can add up to big repair costs over time. Understanding how braking systems work, and how you can adjust your driving, can save you serious money and keep your vehicle running smoothly for years.

surgery. OxyContin and fentanyl are used regularly. I was awakened one night by a nurse to give me oxy - but I needed a doctor’s prescription for two Tylenol. The old saw, “If your body says you need it, take it. I you don’t, don’t” is good advice.
The Four miracle Treatments
Much has been written about the four “miracle treatments for weight loss and weight control,” associated with heart disease recovery, Mounjaro, Wegovy, Zipbound and Ozempic. Here’s a quick rundown:
Mounjaro - Mounjaro is an injectable prescription medicine that is used along with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar (glucose) in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Mounjaro helps your body both regulate blood sugar and decrease how much food you eat. Mounjaro is not a weight loss
Brake jobs are not what they used to be. Once upon a time, replacing brake pads was a relatively inexpensive fix. But today’s vehicles, equipped with advanced safety systems like anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control, adaptive cruise control, and complex sensor-driven driver-assist features, often require specialized labor and expensive parts.
Luxury vehicles, electric cars, and many modern SUVs and trucks come with larger, more complex brake systems that require premium parts, advanced diagnostics, and sometimes recalibration of onboard computers. It’s not uncommon for a full brake job to cost $600 to $1,200 for a standard vehicle. For high-end models or performance vehicles, the bill can easily climb to $2,500 or more.
These rising costs make it even more critical to adopt driving habits that help preserve your brakes, rather than prematurely wear them down.
One of the biggest contributors to brake wear is aggressive driving. Accelerating hard from a stoplight, only to slam on the brakes at the next red light, subjects your braking system to constant high stress. The faster you’re going, the
drug. It may start working to lower blood sugar from the first dose, and is available by subscription only from a medical doctor and is best used as a support drug in an on-going weight loss program. (From their website.)
Wegovy - Wegovy is used to help weight loss and maintain weight loss long-term in patients with obesity or who are overweight and have weight-related medical problems. Wegovy works by reducing appetite and slowing the gut down, so you eat less, which results in weight loss and helps with weight management. Wegovy is also used to reduce the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and cardiovascular death in adults with cardiovascular disease and who are obese or overweight.
Zepbound – Is a long-term weight management injectable drug for people who are obese. It also reduces moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea in these people. It is more effective in a program of
harder your brakes have to work to bring your vehicle to a stop. That excessive work turns into heat, and heat is one of the biggest enemies of brake components.
When brakes are forced to absorb excess heat repeatedly, brake pads glaze over, rotors warp, and calipers wear prematurely. What could have been a simple pad replacement suddenly requires new rotors.
concentrated, long-term weight reduction. (From their website,)
Ozempic - Is an injectable prescription medicine used for adults with type 2 diabetes to lower their blood sugar levels (A1C). It is also used to reduce the risk of kidney function decline in diabetics with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and lower the risk of heart attack or stroke in certain patients with type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
An Ozempic injection can be selfadministered once a week, under the skin using an autoinjector (pen). It’s designed to be used along with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar (glucose) in adults with type 2 diabetes, and to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events such a stroke in obese or mildly obese patients. (From their website.)
Heart disease is a serious medical condition that is fatal to many. Knowing the major symptoms, such
By driving smoothly, accelerating gradually and coasting toward stops rather than racing between lights, you significantly reduce the amount of work your brakes have to do. This simple change can add tens of thousands of miles to the life of your brake components.
Slamming on the brakes is another major cause of premature wear. It not only stresses the pads and rotors but can also damage other parts of your braking system, including calipers and brake lines. Moreover, sudden hard braking can activate ABS unnecessarily, putting wear on sensors and control modules.
Of course, emergency braking is sometimes unavoidable. But frequent hard braking in daily driving often indicates poor anticipation, tailgating, or distracted driving — all habits that not only wear down your brakes but also increase your risk of accidents.
Maintaining safe following distances and looking far ahead to anticipate traffic changes allows you to brake more gradually and gen-

as chest pain or discomfort, shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, and dizziness can alert the patient to take action. Women may experience atypical symptoms such as back pain, nausea, or fatigue. Tingling fingertips is an indication of poor circulation as are hands or arms that ‘go to sleep,’ are reasons to consult a doctor.
Okay, you’re vulnerable. What precautions can you take? Number one, change your Lifestyle.
This means:
• Quit smoking
• Eat a healthier diet – eliminating processed foods and sodium (salt)
• Exercise a minimum of 30 minutes a day, five days a week
• Maintain a healthy weight
If you do all these things will you avoid “The Big” One? Not necessarily, but your odds for a healthier future are greatly improved.

tly, giving your brakes a longer, healthier life.
For drivers who live in hilly areas, descending long grades can be a particular challenge for brakes. Constantly riding the brakes to maintain speed down a steep hill generates enormous amounts of heat, which can cause brake fade, a dangerous situation where brakes lose effectiveness due to overheating.
A simple and effective way to help your brakes on steep descents is to manually downshift your transmission. Most automatic vehicles allow drivers to drop into a lower gear. Doing so uses engine braking, where the engine’s compression helps slow the car, to control speed without overworking the brakes.
This technique not only helps preserve your brakes but also provides better control, especially when roads are wet, icy, or otherwise hazardous.
Where you drive also plays a role in how quickly your brakes wear out. City driving, with frequent stops, starts, and heavy traffic, puts far more demand on brakes than steady highway cruising. It’s not uncommon for city drivers to replace brakes at 30,000 to 40,000 miles, while rural or highway drivers may see pads last 60,000 miles or more.
If most of your driving is urban, it’s even more important to adopt good braking habits to offset the constant wear your brakes endure.
Beyond driving habits, regular maintenance can also dramatically affect brake life and safety. Many drivers ignore early signs of brake wear, squealing, grinding, and pulsing pedals, hoping to delay
repairs. But waiting too long often turns a simple pad replacement into full rotor and caliper repairs, doubling or tripling the cost. It can also cause premature failure of front end parts, ball joints, tie rod ends and so forth.
Another important maintenance item is flushing the brake fluid. Over time, brake fluid absorbs moisture, which can corrode brake components internally. Most manufacturers recommend a brake fluid flush every 2 to 3 years, yet many drivers never do it. This inexpensive service can prevent thousands in repairs down the road.
Part of the reason brake repairs have become so costly is the complexity of modern braking systems. Features like regenerative braking, electronic parking brakes, adaptive cruise control, and collision avoidance systems require precise calibration when brakes are serviced.
In some vehicles, even replacing a set of brake pads triggers a recalibration process involving specialized tools and software. Labor costs are higher, and parts are often proprietary, leaving few low-cost aftermarket options.
While these systems improve safety and performance, they also add to repair complexity and cost, another reason why preventative care through good driving habits is more important than ever.
Your brakes are one of the most critical and most expensive safety systems on your vehicle. How you drive has a direct impact on how long they last, how well they work, and how much you’ll spend keeping them in top condition. By using more mindful driving habits and staying on top of maintenance, you can keep your brake system healthy, your repair bills lower, and your drives safer.

When her HP desktop computer stops working, Janet Fried contacts Best Buy for help. But her Total Tech Support contract turns out to not be as comprehensive as she thought. Can she get her computer repaired?
Q: I’m a long-time Best Buy customer and a Total Technical Support member. So when I had a problem with my computer recently, I expected Best Buy to help me.
My computer was not working with the printer I bought from Best Buy. I spent five hours on the phone with Best Buy trying to get it fixed, but they could not help me. Worse, I was left with a computer that no longer connects to the internet, making it basically worthless.
Since then, I have called multiple times and spoken to four more computer technicians, and they all had

dering if spending $180 a year on a technical support program like this is worth your money.
I contacted Best Buy on your behalf. A representative from its executive offices contacted you and arranged for a technician to visit your home at no additional cost and fix the issue. The technician’s diagnosis suggested a problem created by your first technical support call. If this ever happens to you again -and I hope it doesn’t -- maybe you should request an in-person visit the first time there’s a problem.

CASE NUmbEr: (Numero del Caso): 25CU000127N SUmmONS (CiTACiON judicial)
NOTICE TO DEFENDANT: (AVISO AL DEMANDADO): Kristi J. Courtois and and DOES 1 through 10, inclusive.
YOU ARE BEING SUED BY PLAINTIFF: (LO ESTA DEMANDANDO EL DEMANDANTE): Grove Unit Owners Association. NOTICE! You have been sued. The court may decide against you without your being heard unless you respond within 30 days. Read the information below. You have 30 CALENDAR DAYS after this summons and legal papers are served on you to file a written response at this court and have a copy served on the plaintiff. A letter or phone call will not protect you. Your written response must be in proper legal form if you want the court to hear your case. There may be a court form that you can use for your response. You can find these court forms and more information at the California Courts Online SelfHelp Center (www.courtinfo.
ca.gov/selfhelp), your county law library, or the courthouse nearest you. If you cannot pay the filing fee, ask the court clerk for a fee waiver form. If you do not file your response on time, you may lose the case by default, and your wages, money, and property may be taken without further warning from the court. There are other legal requirements. You may want to call an attorney right away. If you do not know an attorney, you may want to call an attorney referral service. If you cannot afford an attorney, you may be eligible for free legal services from a nonprofit legal services program. You can locate these nonprofit groups at the California Legal Services Web site (www.lawhelpcalifornia.org), the California Courts Online SelfHelp Center (www.courtinfo. ca.gov/selfhelp), or by contacting your local court or county bar association. NOTE: The court has a statutory lien for waived fees and costs on any settlement or arbitration award of $10,000 or more in a civil case. The court’s lien must be paid before the court will dismiss the case.
