Not only is St. Paddy’s Day on March 17, but the entire month of March is officially designated across the entire United States as: “Irish American Heritage Month.”
Approximately 162 million Americans – more than 20 times Ireland’s population – plan to celebrate on this year’s St. Patrick’s Day. And Irish Americans won’t be the only ones donning the green to join the fun!
As the Irish are fond of saying:
Paper
“Everyone’s Irish on St. Patrick’s Day!”
I love the Irish and everything about them. And I can’t possibly imagine the world without them.
I was in Grade 5, not quite yet in Middle School, when I first heard our teacher tell us about a magical place called “The Emerald Isle,” which is the official nickname of Ireland, today.
I mostly hated school, but our new teacher named Mr. Fred Steitzer
online: www.TheCommunityPaper.com email: thepaper@cox.net
(real name), changed all of that and taught us something special: that school can actually be fun! And learning can be an exciting adventure of the mind and imagination!
And he proved it, over and over, as I have mentioned in a past story on Mark Twain.
He once came dressed as Mark Twain – true story – and spoke of a small boy just like me who also hated school, church sermons, and all those unbreakable rules.
THE ST. PATRICK’S DAY THAT CHANGED THE LIVES OF ME & MY SCHOOL CLASSMATES!
One magical and exciting day just happened to be on St. Patrick’s Day, and Mr. Steitzer came to class dressed all in green as a Leprechaun! And that’s the Gospel truth!
The entire class collapsed in loud, uncontrolled laughter as he sat on a stool in front of us, crossed his legs, and stroked his fake bright-red beard . . . and he even had a long curled pipe in his mouth!
Fun Facts! from page 1
He was even wearing black boots, green pants and a green coat complete with a black buckle belt, and a tall green top hat!
OUR MYSTERIOUS LEPRECHAUN VISITOR EVEN INTERRUPTED ANOTHER CLASSROOM!
Our class laughter was so loud that Mr. Timberline (real name), who was the teacher in the adjacent classroom had to come over to see what all the noise was about.
After Mr. Timberline laughed and went back to his own class, our Leprechaun ‘visitor’ (aka Mr. Steitzer), spoke in a lilting Irish brogue and our imaginations took flight as he spoke vividly of Ireland and its rich history and festivals and culture and beautiful folklore, such as with Leprechauns!
I think the greatest compliment any teacher can receive is when small impressionable students all eagerly shoot their hands up in the air – followed by exciting, unrestrained questions about Ireland, castles, music and everything Irish . . . including Leprechauns!
Mr. Steitzer was right, all along.
Learning can (and should) be fun and exciting!
We didn’t always need to have our teacher in costume to make history fun. He mostly used pictures, and
This week, a compendium of wit, wisdom and neat stuff you can tell at parties. Enjoy!
A woman brought a very limp duck into her veterinarian. As she laid her pet on the table, the vet pulled out his stethoscope and listened to the bird’s chest.
After a moment or two, the vet shook his head and sadly said “I’m sorry, your duck Cuddles has passed away.”
The distressed woman wailed, “Are you sure?”
other visual aids . . . but his lively voice brought things ‘alive’ and exciting for us as we sometimes sat spellbound, in cathedral silence, hanging on his every word.
That was plenty enough, with or without costumes. But we never really knew what historical figure might next walk into our classroom.
Now, it’s time for our “St. Patrick’s Day Fun Facts & Multiple-Choice Quiz.”
Choose teams, keep score, or just relax and enjoy yourself in the company of your family and friends with someone reading the following quiz out loud! Even if they don’t know the answer, it’s always fun to just guess, and just relax, and merely enjoy the moment together.
(Please note: I’m accustomed to using British spelling so please excuse my spelling which may look like I’m misspelling words by American standards, but, are correct in the U.K.)
First question:
1. WHICH STATEMENT BELOW IS TRUE?
A. St. Patrick didn’t like Ireland at first.
B. St. Patrick preached in Gaelic, French, Spanish, and Latin.
C. St. Patrick never banished snakes from Ireland.
Well, if the Luck of the Irish is with you, then you selected “C” as
“Yes I’m sure, your duck is dead.”
“How can you be so sure?” the woman protested. “I mean you haven’t done any testing on him or anything. He might just be in a coma or something.”
The vet rolled his eyes, turned around and left the room. He returned a few minutes later with a black Labrador Retriever.
As the duck’s owner looked on, the dog stood on his hind legs, put his front paws on the examination table and sniffed the duck from top to bottom. he then looked up at the vet with sad eyes and shook his head.
The vet patted the dog on the head and took him out of the room.
A few minutes later, he returned with a cat. The cat jumped on the table and delicately sniffed the bird from head to foot. The cat sat back on her haunches, shook her head, meowed softly and strolled out of the room.
The vet looked at the woman and
being true: St. Patrick never banished snakes from Ireland, which is his most famous and popular -but misleading -- myth!
Simply put, St. Patrick never banished snakes from Ireland because: Post-glacial Ireland never had snakes! According to the world’s leading experts: “At no time has there ever been any suggestion of snakes in Ireland, so there was nothing for St. Patrick to banish,” so says foremost authority and naturalist, Nigel Monaghan, keeper of natural history at the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin, who has searched extensively through Irish fossil collections and records.
2. WHERE IN THE UNITED STATES IS THE BIGGEST ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARADE HELD EVERY YEAR?
A. Chicago
B. New Orleans
C. New York City
If you guess this one correctly, you deserve a pint of green beer or perhaps a hearty Double Guinness! Correct answer above is “C” for New York City. The largest St. Patrick’s Day parade in the United States is in New York City where it has been held annually since 1762 and which attracts millions of spectators!
3. WHICH STATEMENT BELOW IS TRUE?
A. The date of St. Patrick’s death is unknown.
B. St. Patrick’s wife Molly bore him 10 children all named Patrick.
said, “I’m sorry, but he’s not only merely dead, he’s really, most sincerely dead.”
He then turned to his computer and produced a bill, which he handed to the woman. Still in shock, the duck’s owner took the bill. “$150 dollars!” she cried, “Just to tell me my duck is dead???”
The vet shrugged, “If you had just taken my word for it, the bill would have been $20. But with the Lab Report and the Cat Scan, it is now $150.”
One of my favorite writers, Samuel Clemens ... also known as Mark Twain, with some remarkable quotes:
“Politicians are like diapers; they need to be changed often, and for the same reason.”
“Familiarity breeds contempt –and children.”

C. St. Patrick was a strict vegetarian.
If you picked “A” then you’re spot-on! The dates of St. Patrick’s life are uncertain and there are conflicting traditions regarding the year of his death. Therefore, scholars regard the exact date of his demise as unknown.
4. WHICH U.S. STATE HAS THE LARGEST IRISH POPULATION?
A. California
B. New York
C. Pennsylvania
This one is rather tricky, so don’t feel badly if you guessed wrong. But, if you get this one correct, well, you go to the head of the class! Correct answer above is “A” for California!
According to the official U.S. Census reports, California has the largest population of people with Irish ancestry in the entire United States with over 2.3 million! New York state is next with over 2 million. And Pennsylvania is 3 rd with over 1.8 million people of Irish ancestry.
However, by ratio or percentage (in proportion to its smaller state population) New Hampshire has the highest “percentage” of Irish residents with 20% of all its residents claiming Irish ancestry.

I went out for a ride-along with the Escondido police this morning.
We were called to an apartment and found a woman holding a bloody 5-iron standing over a lifeless man.
The detective asks, “Ma’am, is that your husband?”
“Yes” says the woman.
“Did you hit him with that golf club?”
Fun Facts! from page 2
A. St. Patrick was never officially canonised as a saint by the Catholic Church.
B. St. Patrick was born in Ireland. C. St. Patrick’s cousin, Evelyn Madison, told him he would never amount to anything.
Now, if you get this one correct, well, you must have a four-leaf clover in your pocket! Because if you picked “A” then you’re at the top of your game, mate! While it’s true that St. Patrick was never officially canonised as a saint by the Catholic Church, there’s good reason behind it.
During the first millennium, there was (no formal canonisation process) in the Catholic Church.
And St. Patrick lived during the first millennium (specifically in the 5th century), making him a figure from the first half of the millennium, which was before the canonisation process.
Even though he was never canonised as a saint, he is still recognized and venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church, and by the seventh century, he was already revered as the official Patron Saint of Ireland.
The Catholic Church added St. Patrick’s Day to its liturgical calendar in the 1600s and today he is celebrated by the Catholic Church, the Lutheran Church, the Church of Ireland (part of the Anglican Communion), and in the Eastern Orthodox Church, where he is regarded as “equal-to-the-apostles and Enlightener of Ireland.”
6. WHAT IS THE NATIONAL ANIMAL OF IRELAND?
A. Irish Setter (dog)
B. Magpie (bird)
C. Irish Hare (wild rabbit)
Get this one correct and I suspect you’re Irish, born and bred! Correct answer above is “C” for Irish Hare (aka mountain hare) which is a species of wild rabbit. It is the national animal of Ireland. The Irish Hare is a native species that’s been part of Ireland’s wildlife and culture for millions of years!
7. WHAT IS THE MOST POPULAR SPORT IN IRELAND?
A. Rugby
B Golf
C Soccer
If you picked “C” Soccer, then I expect to see you at this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade and wearing
the Green! And then later, at San Diego’s most popular and greatest Irish pub, called O’Sullivan’s Irish Pub in downtown Escondido, located at 118 E. Give ‘em a call and support our local businesses! (760) 737-0954.
8. WHICH ST. PATRICK STATEMENT BELOW IS TRUE?
A. At only age 16, St. Patrick was kidnapped by Irish pirates & taken to Ireland as a slave.
B. St. Patrick’s cousins, Paul and Nome Van Middlesworth, played the first bagpipes.
C. St. Patrick mostly preached Christianity in his favourite green Irish kilts or tartans.
If you selected “A” then you’re an Irish scholar! According to Patrick’s own autobiographical “Confessio,” when he was about sixteen, he was captured by Irish pirates from his home in Britain and taken as a slave to Ireland. He writes that he lived there for six years as an animal herder before escaping and returning to his family. After becoming a cleric, he returned to spread Christianity in Northern and Western Ireland. In later life, he served as a bishop and by the seventh century, he had already come to be revered – as previously stated -- as the Patron Saint of Ireland.
9. WHAT IS IRELAND’S MOST FAMOUS DANCE CALLED? EVERYONE HAS SEEN “RIVERDANCE” OR YOU’RE FROM ANOTHER PLANET.
A. Festival Irish Dance
B. Irish Set Dance
C. Irish Step Dance
Even though everyone has their favourite Irish dance, no other Irish dance has captured the world stage and global attention as this particular form of traditional Irish dance as performed by such troupes as “Riverdance,” which has been seen on world television, live theatres, and by more people on planet Earth than any other Irish form of dance.
So, if you picked “C” for “Irish Step Dance,” then you’re in-step with the world today!
Solo Irish dance includes this most well-known form of Irish dance expression, known as Irish stepdance. It was globally popularised from 1994 onwards by such shows as Riverdance and which is now

The County wants your input on the budget for the upcoming fiscal year, which starts on July 1.
There are many ways to participate in the budget process. Visit Engage San Diego County (https://engage. sandiegocounty.gov/budget-2025) to take a survey and to use a new tool to rank County budget priorities in order of importance to you.
The survey also asks how you’d like to stay informed about the budget process, by email, text or some other form of communication. The survey is open through March 28.
The information from the survey will be considered along with community feedback gathered throughout the year as the County’s recommended budget is developed. Other considerations include things like program and service delivery data, available resources, the local economy and availability of state and federal funding.
The recommended budget for fiscal year 2025-26 will be released to the public on May 1. The County budget in the current fiscal year
“The Last Six Seconds”
One can hardly conceive of the enormous grief held quietly within General Kelly as he spoke.
On Nov 13, 2010, Lt General John Kelly, USMC, gave a speech to the Semper Fi Society of St. Louis, MO. This was four days after his son, Lt Robert Kelly, USMC, was killed by an IED while on his 3rd Combat tour. During his speech, General Kelly spoke about the dedication and valor of our young men and women who step forward each and every day to protect us.
During the speech, he never mentioned the loss of his own son. He closed the speech with the moving account of the last six seconds in the lives of two young Marines who died with rifles blazing to pro-

The County funds many programs and services in the region, which has a large unincorporated area in addition to 18 incorporated cities and 18 federally recognized tribes.
In the unincorporated area, County government is responsible for the day-to-day things a city government would do, like law enforcement, roads, building permits, animal shelters and protection, along with parks and libraries. Some cities also contract with the County to provide these types of services.
County government provides many services that support the entire region to keep people safe and healthy. These include emergency preparedness; criminal prosecution and detention facilities; delivery of federal and state social service assistance within the region, access to food and housing for vulnerable people; health programs including behavioral health services; food and restaurant inspections; elections and beach water monitoring.
Funds from other government agencies make up about half the County’s budget and must be used as directed. The other half comes mostly from property taxes, fees

“I will leave you with a story about the kind of people they are, about the quality of the steel in their backs, about the kind of dedication they bring to our country while they serve in uniform and forever after as veterans. Two years ago when I was the Commander of all U.S. and Iraqi forces, in fact, the 22nd of April 2008, two Marine infantry battalions, 1/9 “The Walking Dead,” and 2/8 were switching out in Ramadi. One battalion in the closing days of their deployment going home very soon, the other just starting its seven-month combat tour. Two Marines, Corporal Jonathan Yale and Lance Corporal Jordan Haerter, 22 and 20 years old respectively, one from each battalion, were assuming the watch together at the entrance gate of an outpost that contained a makeshift barracks housing 50 Marines. The same broken down ramshackle building was also home to 100 Iraqi police, also my men and our allies in the fight against the terrorists in Ramadi, a city until recently the most dangerous city on earth and owned by Al Qaeda.
Yale was a dirt poor mixed-race kid from Virginia with a wife and daughter, and a mother and sister who lived with him and whom he supported as well. He did this on a yearly salary of less than $23,000.
for services and other sources. Some of these funds must still be used in specific ways, and the County can decide how to invest the remaining portion to support the community. Those decisions are more challenging this year due to rising costs, uncertainty at the state and federal levels and other factors.

Haerter, on the other hand, was a middle class white kid from Long Island. They were from two completely different worlds. Had they not joined the Marines they would never have met each other, or understood that multiple America’s exist simultaneously depending on one’s race, education level, economic status, and where you might have been born. But they were Marines, combat Marines, forged in the same crucible of Marine training, and because of this bond they were brothers as close, or closer, than if they were born of the same woman.
The mission orders they received from the sergeant squad leader I am sure went something like, “Okay you two clowns, stand this post and let no unauthorized personnel or vehicles pass. You clear?”
I am also sure Yale and Haerter then rolled their eyes and said in unison something like, “Yes Sergeant,” with just enough attitude that made the point without saying the words, “No kidding sweetheart, we know what we’re doing.” They then relieved two other Marines on watch and took up their post at the entry control point of Joint Security Station Nasser, in the Sophia section of Ramadi, Al Anbar, Iraq.
A few minutes later a large blue truck turned down the alley wayperhaps 60-70 yards in length, and
Escondido Police investigating Vehicle accident that killed a Pedestrian
On March 8th, at 11:56 pm, Escondido Police responded to a call of a traffic collision in the 1100 block of East Washington Ave. in Escondido.
The first officers arriving on the scene discovered a pedestrian in the roadway struck by a vehicle. Officers immediately began CPR on the victim until Escondido Fire Paramedics arrived shortly after. The victim was transported to Palomar Medical Center, where they were pronounced deceased.
The driver of the vehicle involved remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. The driver involved in this accident was not arrested or cited.
Anyone who witnessed the collision or has information regarding this incident is encouraged to call the Escondido Police Department at (760) 839-4722 or Traffic Investigator Adan Martinez at (760) 8394465, reference case 25002203.

sped its way through the serpentine of concrete jersey walls. The truck stopped just short of where the two were posted and detonated, killing them both catastrophically. Twenty-four brick masonry houses were damaged or destroyed. A mosque 100 yards away collapsed. The truck’s engine came to rest two hundred yards away knocking most of a house down before it stopped. Our explosive experts reckoned the blast was made of 2,000 pounds of explosives. Two died, and because these two young infantrymen didn’t have it in their DNA to run from danger, they saved 150 of their Iraqi and American brothers-in-arms.
When I read the situation report about the incident a few hours after it happened I called the regimental commander for details as something about this struck me as different. Marines dying or being seriously wounded is commonplace in combat. We expect Marines regardless of rank or MOS to stand their ground and do their duty, and even die in the process, if that is what the mission takes. But this just seemed different. The regimental commander had just returned from the site and he agreed, but reported that there were no American witnesses to the event - just Iraqi police. I figured if there was any chance of

So look for them at this year’s St. Patrick Day’s celebration! Final question.
10. WHICH ST PATRICK STATEMENT IS TRUE?
A. Patrick was not his real birth name.
B. Patrick had his favourite dog named Casper blessed by the church.
C. Patrick often slept in church after delivering his sermons.
It’s good luck to get this final question correct. So, if you picked

finding out what actually happened and then to decorate the two Marines to acknowledge their bravery, I’d have to do it as a combat award that requires two eye-witnesses and we figured the bureaucrats back in Washington would never buy Iraqi statements. If it had any chance at all, it had to come under the signature of a general officer.
I traveled to Ramadi the next day and spoke individually to a halfdozen Iraqi police all of whom told the same story. The blue truck turned down into the alley and immediately sped up as it made its way through the serpentine. They all said, “We knew immediately what was going on as soon as the two Marines began firing.” The Iraqi police then related that some of them also fired, and then to a man, ran for safety just prior to the explosion. All survived. Many were injured, some seriously. One of the Iraqis elaborated and with tears welling up said, “They’d run like any normal man would to save his life.” “What he didn’t know until then,” he said, “And what he learned that very instant, was that Marines are not normal.” Choking past the emotion he said, “Sir, in the name of God no sane man would have stood there and done what they did.” “No sane man.” “They saved us all.”
What we didn’t know at the time, and only learned a couple of days
“A” that “Patrick” was not his real name, well, I would play this week’s lottery if I were you – because you’re 100% correct!
Patrick’s original name was Maewyn Succat. And he was born to Christian parents in Roman Britain. His father was a deacon and his grandfather was a priest. But St. Patrick (according to his own account) was not a religious child.

BONUS FACT: Saint Patrick was traditionally associated with the colour blue, but green is now the colour most associated with St. Patrick’s Day.
Historians say that Saint Patrick’s colour was blue, and that a lighter shade of blue called “St. Patrick’s blue,” was used on ancient Irish flags.
It was also used on armbands and flags by the Irish Citizen Army during the 1916 Easter Rising.
Green became the preferred colour for St. Patrick’s Day because it is the colour of the shamrock.
later after I wrote a summary and submitted both Yale and Haerter for posthumous Navy Crosses, was that one of our security cameras, damaged initially in the blast, recorded some of the suicide attack. It happened exactly as the Iraqis had described it. It took exactly six seconds from when the truck entered the alley until it detonated.
You can watch the last six seconds of their young lives. Putting myself in their heads I supposed it took about a second for the two Marines to separately come to the same conclusion about what was going on once the truck came into their view at the far end of the alley. Exactly no time to talk it over, or call the sergeant to ask what they should do. Only enough time to take half an instant and think about what the sergeant told them to do only a few minutes before, “Let no unauthorized personnel or vehicles pass.” The two Marines had about five seconds left to live.
It took maybe another two seconds for them to present their weapons, take aim, and open up. By this time the truck was half-way through the barriers and gaining speed the whole time. Here, the recording shows a number of Iraqi police, some of whom had fired their AKs, now scattering like the normal and rational men they were - some running right past the Marines. They had three seconds left to live.
For about two seconds more, the recording shows the Marines’
In legend, Saint Patrick used the shamrock to explain the Christian beliefs to the Irish.
According to Irish legend, St. Patrick used the three leaves of a shamrock to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) to the Irish people during his missionary work, as the three leaves on one stem represented the three parts of God as one entity. This is why the shamrock is strongly associated with St. Patrick and Ireland today.

If they had been aware, they would have known they were safe because two Marines stood between them and a crazed suicide bomber. The recording shows the truck careening to a stop immediately in front of the two Marines. In all of the instantaneous violence Yale and Haerternever hesitated. By all reports and by the recording, they never stepped back. They never even started to step aside. They never even shifted their weight. With their feet spread shoulder width apart, they leaned into the danger, firing as fast as they could work their weapons. They had only one second left to live.
The truck explodes. The camera goes blank. Two young men go to their God. Six seconds. Not enough time to think about their families, their country, their flag, or about their lives or their deaths, but more than enough time for two very brave young men to do their duty into eternity. That is the kind of people who are on watch all over the world tonight - for you.

I am pleased to share that last week, my proposal “Reducing Fire Danger Through Emergency Warnings” was approved by the Board of Supervisors. This critical step will help prevent avoidable wildfires and enhance public safety throughout Southern California.
This initiative directs County staff to explore options for emergency encampment removals during red
flag warnings, prioritizing the safety of our communities and the individuals living in encampments. Additionally, it encourages collaboration with all jurisdictions to adopt similar fire prevention measures.
Many of you have reached out to ask, “Where will people go if encampments are cleared?” That’s a great question, and I want to address it.
I firmly believe that allowing individuals to live on sidewalks and in squalor is not a compassionate or sustainable solution—especially when many are struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. We must balance public safety with human dignity, offering real pathways to stability while maintaining order in our communities.
Here are a few key options available to those who may be displaced:
regional Homeless assistance Program: This program offers motel vouchers to individuals who are willing to accept help. It also includes case management, with a high success rate in transitioning participants into permanent housing upon exiting the program.
safe Parking Lot Program: For those with vehicles, the County operates safe parking lots, providing a secure place to stay and access to supportive services.
Tiny Home initiative: The County will soon launch a tiny home initiative, expanding affordable housing options and offering another viable alternative to living on the streets.
For those who refuse assistance and are also violating laws beyond illegal camping, enforcement measures—including mandated treatment—may be necessary. This is not a blanket approach for all experiencing homelessness
but rather a targeted response to individuals who decline help and pose a risk to themselves and the community.
Our goal is not only to reduce fire risks but also to address the root causes of homelessness through supportive programs and, when needed, appropriate enforcement actions.
Thank you for your continued engagement and thoughtful questions. I am committed to keeping you informed and working collaboratively to make our community safer and stronger for everyone.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any further questions or concerns.

getting a good Night’s sleep on is Harder Than Ever
by Christopher Elliott
Janet Heller wishes the hotel she recently booked in Chicago had come with a warning label. After she checked in, she started hearing sirens. And that’s when she looked outside her window.
“We were right across the street from a hospital,” says Heller, a retired college professor from Portage, Mich. “I heard ambulance sirens all night. I couldn’t sleep.”
On second thought, maybe the entire travel industry should come with a warning label. It’s getting harder to sleep when you’re on the road. And worse, the travel industry doesn’t seem to care -- with some notable exceptions.
A recent Hilton survey suggests that two in five travelers select hotels where they can get a better night’s rest. And a Kayak study released this week says 85 percent of American travelers have felt sleep-deprived in the last year. But the travel industry can’t always deliver.
In hotels, blackout curtains don’t close all the way, and ice machines rattle in the hallway. Getting any shut-eye on planes is pretty much impossible unless you have the money for an upgrade to a lie-flat seat in business class. And even then, don’t expect too much.
“Getting sleep while you’re traveling is becoming a challenge,” says Walter Meyer, author of “If You
Weren’t Here, This Would Not Be Happening.”
He should know. Meyer spent most of last year traveling through Europe, staying at hotels, vacation rentals and in friends’ apartments. He’s struggled to sleep on a variety of beds and through loud music, trains, and nightclubs at the end of the street. And he says quality sleep is a precious and vanishing commodity.
But how is it getting more difficult to sleep, and is there still a way to find some rest when you’re on the road?
What’s the problem with sleep and travel?
Here’s the problem: The travel industry doesn’t really care how well
you sleep, despite what it says.
Consider Paula Doherty’s recent flight from Tampa to London.
“I felt like I was a prisoner in a closet, that’s how small the seats were,” she says. “I was shocked.”
She tried to use a pillow to lean against the window and get some rest, but there wasn’t enough space. She remained awake for 8 ½ hours. Doherty had considered buying an upgrade to premium economy, which offers a little more room, “but an extra fee just doesn’t seem to buy less suffering.”
For all the talk about flying in comfort -- and with one or two important exceptions -- flying is a slog. If you can afford an upgrade to something like Qatar Airways’ business
class, Qsuite, or can fly on one of Singapore Airlines’ new long-haul aircraft, you might be able to sleep all night. But you’re still in a pressurized aluminum tube.
It’s the same story with hotels. Using the cheapest building materials or rotating mattresses less frequently can save a hotel money in the short term. But down the road, these practices lead to complaints and cranky customers who don’t get enough sleep.
In other words, cutting corners and cramming extra seats on the plane is more profitable, so good sleep is a secondary consideration. And with more people traveling, these grievances about sleep deprivation are on the rise.
But that doesn’t have to happen to you.
How to get a good night’s sleep when you travel.
Whether you live on the road or travel only occasionally, there’s no need to end your trip looking like an extra from Night of the Living Dead. Here’s what the experts told me.
Pack your sleep gear. That’s what Pattie Haubner does. “I always bring my own pillow and an oversized cashmere sweater,” says Haubner, a retired communica-

David Ponzevic must pay $80 to check his bags on an American Airlines flight -- even though his bags are supposed to be “free.” Can he get a refund?
Q: My daughter and I flew from Boston to Chicago on American Airlines recently. Our tickets included one free checked bag per ticket.
When we checked in at the kiosk at Logan Airport in Boston, it charged us $40 per bag. Before we paid, we asked an American Airlines employee for assistance.
She told us to “just pay the charge and ask for a refund later.” We paid the fees and then boarded our flight.
I have tried numerous times to contact American Airlines about this, to no avail. I have called the tollfree number at different times and worked through the prompts only to have the system hang up on me.
I have used the 24/7 virtual assistant and they were only able to provide me a link to the American Airlines refund page, which did not allow me to request a bag fee refund.
I also filled out the American Airlines comment/complaint form to try to reach out that way. I received a boilerplate email stating that American Airlines was going to “make sure that my concerns were directed to the appropriate parties” and to please choose American Airlines for my future travel needs.
I was just informed that I have been removed from the CA State Assembly Budget Committee by the Democratic Speaker because
I would like a refund of the $80 that we paid. Can you help me?
~ David Ponzevic, Plainfield, Ill.
A: American Airlines shouldn’t have charged you $80 for your checked luggage. So much for “free” bags.
While I’m on the subject, let me object to the term “free” anything, and especially luggage. American should have said that it included the cost of your luggage in the cost of your fare. (Technically, nothing is free when you’re flying.)
Oh, I know. Some of you, dear readers, are probably saying, “But it’s free if I use my credit card.” Nope! You’re still paying an annual fee or giving American a per-
centage of those lucrative swipe fees. Or you’re paying interest. Either way, not free.
American asked you to pay twice for your checked baggage, and that’s really upsetting.
The other upsetting thing is the way American handled your request for help. You battled seemingly endless phone trees, an unhelpful AI, and a tone-deaf customer service department. Is it any wonder that American Airlines has the reputation it does when it comes to customer service?
How could you have avoided this? The problem happened at the check-in counter. I might have skipped the self-service kiosk and
he and Gavin Newsom didn’t like me exposing wasteful spending and corrupt use of taxpayer funds in the first two hearings we conducted. In any other workplace, this would be ILLEGAL retaliation against a whistleblower. billions in Wasteful spending
In my first budget hearing, I made national news by exposing nearly $10 BILLION in your tax dollars being given to illegal immigrants for free healthcare – or 1 out of 4 dollars of every Medi-Cal expense in the state’s general fund budget.
Corrupt money Laundering
In my second budget hearing, I revealed how Gavin Newsom and Democrats are using a $25 million Covid-19 program to launder mon-
headed to one of the staffed ticket counters. An agent could have overridden the system and ensured you didn’t have to pay twice for your checked baggage. Failing that, you could have at least gotten the name of the agent who promised you a refund.
After that, the only fix would have been to write to one of the American Airlines executive contacts I publish on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org.
I contacted American Airlines on your behalf. A representative said you had purchased your tickets through an online agency, and that the fare included a free checked bag per passenger. But it looks like you changed your ticket, which downgraded you to a regular economy class ticket. American refunded you a $27 fare difference.
“That said, we understand the confusion based on the confirmation email they were sent that still said one free bag, and are willing to refund the bag,” the representative told me.
But before American Airlines could do anything, you reported that the $80 charge had inexplicably been voided. American Airlines closed your case, and since you have your money back, I will, too.

My office was “warned” after the first budget hearing for me to stop my line of questioning – but you know I cannot be bullied and I refused to back down. Hence, my removal from the Budget Committee.
***
I don’t need to be on the Budget Committee to expose waste and corruption – and we’re proceeding full steam ahead with our efforts to “DOGE” California this year.
Taking a page from President Trump, I want our Reform Califor-
nia movement to let the Democrats in Sacramento know how many resources our supporters put into the fight against them because of their abuse of power by removing me from the Budget Committee – for simply doing my job.
Without the support of Budget Committee staff, I now have to rely on hiring outside investigators and researchers to unearth the waste, fraud and abuse.

Wouldn’t it be amazing to have a force within you to attract and bring to you what you desire, simply by having this force within you or employing that power by engaging it at will? Materially, we have that with magnets. Magnets are used in a multitude of ways today. We have them to balance ships at sea, in the development of the international thermal-nuclear reactor, and in many everyday work tools which are used to position screws and delicate pieces for implementation. Most of us probably remember the magnet as a plaything bringing little pieces of metal together just for fun.
On a more serious note, this magnetic possibility exists within each of us. It is used daily by others in the fields of commerce and religion. In the religious field, we are told that if we believe, anything is possible. Jesus said that if we believe, we will release a force that will move mountains, heal the sick, and fulfill our needs even with this world’s goods, such as food, clothing, and life’s essentials. The prosperity preacher goes so far as to say that by saying the right words and giving the right amount of money, you will attract all you need and more. The theme is, “If you only believe, God has to give it to you.” If one says the words, you will make it happen. After all, that is what God did in creation. He just said the words and this universe came into being. The argument is that we can follow the same pattern for similar results. Isn’t this what Jesus did when he told the storm the Disciples were battling on the Sea of Galilee? He said, “Be Still.”
Still, we have unbelievable power of magnetic ability. We hear it often said that a person has a magnetic personality, drawing other people to them. Why are we attracted to some people? It was said of Hitler that he had this sense of attraction when millions were victimized. A friend told me recently that this same power exists in the animal kingdom with dogs. When purchasing a puppy, we let the puppy choose the new owner. The puppy is magnetically attracted. We exercise a similar force. We are told we are the fulfillers of our own prophecies or fears.
Job, a Biblical character, had a very successful life until he began to fear. When his life turned to disaster, he concludes that he brought his problems on himself with the words, “The thing I feared has overtaken me.” Do we attract the very things we fear? We do have psychological studies on the belief that there is mind over matter. In other words, it is possible with our thinking to activate the magnet that brings about results. I think of this more in the spiritual realm. We are confronted in life with two wills. There is our will and the will of God. We are taught that the will of man (our will) is misdirected and, if followed, will give us an unfulfilled life. But, if we follow the will of God and desire it, we will initiate the magnetic force of God and bring His will into our lives. This could take some practice, but it is worth it.

Meet El Muñeco, a spunky pup full of personality! He is a complex little guy looking for a home that understands his needs. While he was initially fearful when entering the shelter, he has since shown positive social behavior with staff and volunteers. He has a history of resource guarding, reactivity and a strong prey drive and must go to a home without cats. He may also do best in a household without young children. He has navigated spaces near other dogs without issue but has had mixed interactions. His caregivers will provide a behavior consultation for resource guarding and fearfulness to help set him up for success with his new family. If you’re an experienced dog owner who is ready to give this special pup the structure and understanding he needs, he may be the right match for you! The Computer factory

The 1964 release of this Bob Dylan classic provides the theme for this series. The dawn of the 21st century appears to mark the beginning a new era in human evolution. Historians have not yet settled on a name for it, but we’ll call it the “IW age” (intelligent web age). For the first time ever, mankind had developed a way to assemble and provide easy access to the entire body of human knowledge on the Internet. Then we abetted this knowledge base with AI (artificial Intelligence), an artificial neural network that allows intelligent retrieval and processing of the stored knowledge base. The IW is only a quarter century old and definitely a work in process, but it has already changed us in unimaginable ways.
As IW applications mushroomed,
We had a house warming party for one of my grandsons and his lovely bride. It’s not very often that we can all get together, so this was special. Adding to it was the fact that one of my granddaughters and her husband just had their third baby.
As I basked in the glory, surrounded by kids, grandkids, and great grandkids, one of the family dogs came barreling into the room. Hank the Tank made a beeline to the baby.
PCs users increasingly began to rely on the processing power of IW servers rather than the limited CPU, RAM and storage capabilities of their stand-alone PCs. Powerful Internet servers and high speed transmission rates reduced the “need for speed” among connected PCs. The useful lifespan of Internet connected PCs increased from two years in at the beginning of the 21st century to over eight years by 2010. Internet connected “smart phones”, digital assistants, tablets and other devices also offered competitive alternatives to the PC. As a result, PC sales in the USA fell from 157 million units in 2010 to 70 million units by 2024. Early in the 21st century PC technology had “hit the wall”. PCs were no longer the focus of technological innovation, they had become little more than half-smart Internet terminals. Technological innovation left PCs behind and moved on to AI, the IW and other places.
Nome and I got married in 1965. I had finished college, served a hitch in the Marine Corps and was ready to settle down. I met Nome at Belden Corp in Richmond, Indiana where I was an Engineer and she was a Timekeeper. She was a smart and pretty 22 year old divorcee with two beautiful children. We soon added two more. Over the next 30 years we moved from Indiana through Florida, Minnesota, Canada and finally California. As the years rolled by, my career morphed from engineering to industrial management serving as Director or Vice President of Operations with NCR, United Telecom, Pack-
ard Bell and Vision Technologies. In mid 1995 our employer, Vision Technologies, was purchased by an Asian conglomerate and we opened The Computer Factory at our present location on San Marcos Blvd. The early years at the Computer Factory were hectic, exciting and fun as we struggled to keep up with ever increasing processor and video speeds, memory and storage sizes and the exploding range and number of applications. With three other employees we designed, manufactured, repaired and upgraded Windows PCs. As PCs slowly lost their high-tech luster, local computer service centers like us began to disappear. The two major American computer companies, Dell and HP, off-shored their design and manufacturing, turned their PC sales and service over to third parties, and moved on to greener pastures. “The Times They Were A-Changin”
But we’re still here and so are you. Folks under 35 grew up surrounded by IW connection devices like smart phones, PCs, smart watches, smart speakers etc. To them the accumulated knowledge of mankind has always been instantly available along with AI to process it for them. Middle-aged and older Americans grew to adulthood before the IW came along. Our generations invented it and gave the IW to the World but we didn’t experience growing up under its influence.
How has IW technology shaped America’s younger generations and how does it impact older Americans? Will future generations use the IW to become wiser and more tolerant or will they allow it to make them lazy, dumb and more brutish? The jury is still out. What do you think?

Hank – 100 pounds of Labrador enthusiasm. Baby girl – 10 pounds of sweet innocence.
He meant no harm. He was just curious about that tiny person who all the larger people wanted to hold.
Nobody freaked out. Here dad gently (but quickly) placed his hand between the baby and Hank. That broke Hank’s fixation and he calmed down right away.
My Grandson-in-law is an old hand at this. He’s had the pleasure and responsibility of introducing their dog, Cleo, to all three of their babies.
When they had their first baby, Cleo was a constant bodyguard. When the baby napped, Cleo stayed beside him. When the baby cried, Cleo ran to alert Mom and Dad. When the baby began to walk, Cleo was there to cushion his falls.
When baby number two came along, Cleo still needed to be close to her. When this baby cried, Cleo ran to find Mom and Dad. But it wasn’t as much of an emergency as it had been with the first baby.
Now they have baby number three and Cleo’s full-time job as a nanny seems to have become part time. She still needs to be close to the baby and make sure everything’s okay, but she doesn’t need to be there every minute.
Maybe she’s too busy taking care of the two older kids. Maybe she decided that Mom and Dad actually do know what they’re doing and it’s okay to leave them alone with the baby.
My Grandson-in-law said, “Instead of running to get us when the new baby cries, Cleo looks up to make sure we know, then she goes to find a quiet place.”
As Karen Carpenter sang, “Bless the Beasts and the Children.”
They’re going to be fine.

One more warning from the experts. Don’t cut corners on sleep, especially if you’re driving. Adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night, and teens need 8 to 10 hours, according to the National Sleep Foundation. That’s essential to preventing drowsy driving.

The first night of your trip is the hardest. That’s because of the “First Night Effect,” a phenomenon that practically guarantees you terrible sleep on the first night in a new environment.

Oh, and the blackout curtains that don’t close are easy. Bring two clothespins with you and use them to eliminate that crack that lets light flood into your room.
And how about that ice machine churning away in the hallway? If your hotel won’t move you, you can always do what tour operator owner and frequent traveler Phyllis Stoller does: She unplugs it.
“Should I be ashamed to admit that?” Stoller asked me.
Actually, no. The hotel should be ashamed to put a loud ice machine so close to a guest room.
Are there any hotels or airlines to avoid? No, because it varies based on conditions. You could get a great night’s rest in an inexpensive chain hotel out in the middle of nowhere. And you might never fall asleep in that five-star property in the heart of downtown. If you’re going through rough weather in a plane, a lie-flat seat will do you no good. You’re not going to get any rest.
But there are hotels that take sleep seriously. For example, the boutique hotel chain citizenM designed its rooms with sleep at its center. I’m talking about custom bedding and the ability to fine-tune the temperature and lights for the best possible experience.
“The rooms are also designed to
be exceptionally quiet, with soundproofing well above industry standards,” CitizenM’s chief brand officer, Robin Chadha, told me. The hotel even published a white paper on sleep and has an online quiz that determines your sleep type, a measure of how you sleep.
You can also ask about special sleep packages. At the swanky Hotel Valley Ho’s in Scottsdale, Ariz., you can get the Bubbles & No Sleep Troubles Package, which comes with a velvety flamingo eye mask, a wellness patch, an aromatherapy rollerball and a sleep meditation book “for a warm and peaceful finale.”
It would be great to see more initiatives like citizenM’s or Valley Ho’s. But in the meantime, if you care about getting a good night’s rest, book your next trip by prioritizing sleep -- even if it costs a little extra. The zombie look is not right for you.

It hadn’t moved itself outside. It certainly hadn’t killed anyone, even with the numerous opportunities it had been presented to do so. In fact, it hadn’t even loaded itself.
