CALIFORNIA’S WEIRD & INCREDIBLE FACTS!

PART 2

Our Golden State of California is overflowing with fascinating, sometimes strange and colourful facts just waiting to be rediscovered – all to the great delight of the general population.

By popular request from our vast readership, here is Part 2 of California’s Weird and Incredible Facts!

WEIRD & STRANGE CALIFORNIA LAWS “STILL ACTIVE” ON THE BOOKS TO MAKE YOU LAUGH.

Truth is often stranger than fiction and the following certainly proves that adage.

San Diego’s Municipal Code includes many weird laws that are considered outdated, but are still active and on the books, including the following which will surely bring you plenty of chuckles!

1. SAN DIEGO. Do you have an unwelcomed mouse in your house? Well, according to a law still on the San Diego Municipal Code ledger, before you take measures to trap or kill the rodent in-

truder, you are required to have a permissible license before taking action. In San Diego, as well as other parts of California, a weird law commands that people have a valid hunting license in order to set up any type of mousetrap.

2. SAN DIEGO. Also within the jurisdiction of San Diego, an outdated law still exists on the books that clearly states that it is illegal to leave your Christmas lights up past February 2nd. In fact, according to this antiquated law, failure to take them down after that date can result in a fine of up to $250.

3. SAN DIEGO. In America’s Finest City, women may find it necessary to get a permit to wear their favourite high heel shoes before walking on public streets. One of the funniest laws in San Diego says that it is illegal to wear shoes with heels extending more than two inches high. And if the heel’s surface area on public pavements is less than one square inch, it’s illegal. And if you absolutely must wear those fourinch platforms, then make sure your permit is approved first.

4. EUREKA, CALIFORNIA. In Eureka, California, it’s against the

California from page 1

law for a man with a mustache to kiss a woman.

5. FRESNO, CALIFORNIA. In Fresno, California, it is illegal to annoy a lizard in a city park.

6. PACIFIC GROVE, CALIFORNIA. In Pacific Grove, California it is against the law to “molest” butterflies.

7. BLYTHE, CALIFORNIA. In Blythe, you are not allowed to wear cowboy boots unless you own at least two cows.

8. SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA. In San Francisco, elephants are prohibited from walking down Market Street unless they are on a leash. Also, it is illegal to wipe off your car with used underwear.

9. CHICO, CALIFORNIA. In Chico, any person caught detonating a nuclear device within city limits is subject to a $500 fine.

10. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA. In Los Angeles, it is illegal to cry on the witness stand. Also, in Los Angeles it is against the law to lick a toad. MULTIPLE CHOICE QUIZ:

Give Us This Day Our Daily Chuckle

This week, a compendium of wit, wisdom and neat stuff you can tell at parties. Enjoy!

One is from Chicago, another is from Kentucky, and the third is from New Orleans.

All three go with a White House official to examine the fence.

The New Orleans contractor takes out a tape measure and does some measuring, then works some figures with a pencil.

“Well,” he says, “I figure the job will run about $9,000. That’s $4,000 for materials, $4,000 for my crew and $1,000 profit for me.”

The Kentucky contractor also does some measuring and figuring, then says, “I can do this job for $7,000.”

“That’s $3,000 for materials, $3,000 for my crew and $1,000 profit for me.”

WHICH CALIFORNIA STATEMENT BELOW IS TRUE?

A. The name “California” comes from a children’s book.

B. The name California comes from a 16th century novel.

C. The name California comes from the Bible.

This is something people rarely think about because we often take our fascinating world for granted. The origin of California’s name is fascinating history. Correct answer is B, the name California comes from a 16th century novel.

A book written in 1510, “Las Sergas de Esplandián” by Garci Rodriguez is about warriors living on the island of California. The book was popular among the Spanish explorers and as a result, explorers called our state “California” after this 510-year-olde book.

WHICH CALIFORNIA STATEMENT IS TRUE?

A. An extinct animal is the official state animal of California.

B. California does not have an official state animal.

The Chicago contractor doesn’t measure or figure, but leans over to the White House official and whispers, “$27,000.”

The official, incredulous, says, “You didn’t even measure like the other guys. How did you come up with such a high figure?”

The Chicago contractor whispers back, “$10,000 for me, $10,000 for you, and we hire the guy from Kentucky to fix the fence.”

“Done!” replies the government official.

And that, my friends, is why D.C. is called a swamp!

Years ago, a young Navy Pilot was injured while ejecting from his A-4 Skyhawk due to engine failure during a catapult shot from the carrier. Due to the heroics of rescue helicopter crew and the ship’s hospital staff, the only permanent injury was the loss of one ear.

Since he wasn’t physically impaired, he remained on flight status

C. California has two official state animals.

Correct answer is A, an extinct animal is the official state animal of California. While the grizzly bear is the state’s official animal, wild grizzly bears are now extinct in California. Grizzly bears used to be a prominent part of the state’s wildlife with more bears than anywhere else in the United States. However, sadly and tragically, they were all hunted down and killed following the Gold Rush. It’s said that the last Grizzly bear in the wild was killed in 1922.

WHICH CALIFORNIA STATEMENT IS TRUE?

A. The world’s first highway for automobiles was created in California.

B. The world’s first television was invented in California.

C. The world’s first airborne newsreporting helicopter was created in California.

This story is truly amazing! Correct answer is C, the world’s first airborne news-reporting helicopter called “Telecopter” was first created in California.

In Los Angeles, the KTLA Telecop-

and eventually became an Admiral. However, during his career he was always sensitive about his appearance.

One day the Admiral was interviewing two Navy Master Chiefs and a Marine Sergeant Major for his personal staff. The first Master Chief was a Surface Navy type and it was a great interview. At the end of the interview the Admiral asked him, “Do you notice anything different about me?”

The Master Chief answered, “Why, yes, Admiral. I couldn’t help but notice that you are missing your starboard ear, so I don’t know whether this impacts your hearing on that side.”

The Admiral got very angry at this lack of tact and threw him out of his office.

The next candidate, an Aviation Master Chief, when asked this same question, answered, “Well yes, Sir, you seem to be short one ear.”

The Admiral threw him out as well.

The third interview was with the Marine Sergeant Major. He was articulate, extremely sharp, and seemed to know more than the two Navy Master Chiefs put together. The Admiral wanted this guy but went ahead with the same question. “Do you notice anything different about me?”

To his surprise, the Sergeant Ma-

ter was the world’s first television news helicopter, which first went into operation in 1958 and was invented by John D. Silva. The onboard video and audio equipment communicated with a line-of-sight KTLA transmitter-receiver on top of Mount Wilson. The first helicopter was leased to KTLA by National Helicopter Service and Engineering Company in Van Nuys, a suburb in Los Angeles. For several years, KTLA (channel 5) was the only TV station with a helicopterbased TV camera crew reporting ‘live’ from the skies.

KTLA’s news helicopter is known today as “Sky 5” and it is used during “breaking news coverage.”

High-speed car chases are a citywide public fascination – mostly because we made filming them possible from up above. The chopper soon became the envy of news organisations nationwide for its ability to capture aerial shots of wildfires, parades, and, eventually, the “pursuit of the century” -- O.J. Simpson’s slow-speed chase in that famed white Bronco which the whole world saw unravel in “real time” and was held spellbound.

jor said, “Yes Sir. You wear contact lenses.”

The Admiral was impressed and thought to himself, what an incredibly tactful Marine. “And how would you know that?” the Admiral asked.

The Sergeant Major replied: “Well, sir, it’s pretty hard to wear glasses with only one ear”.

On Friday, A hooded robber burst into a Minnesota bank and, at gunpoint, forced the tellers to load their cash into a plain brown bag.

As the robber approached the door, one brave customer grabbed the hood and pulled it off, revealing the robbers face. Without a moments hesitation, the robber shot the customer.

He then looked around the bank and noticed one of the tellers looking straight at him. The robber instantly shot & killed him also. Everyone in the bank, by now horrified, stared down at the floor in silence.

The robber yelled, “Well, did anyone else see my face?”

There was a long moment of dead silence in which everyone was terrified to speak.

Then, one old Norwegian named Ole cautiously raised his hand and said, “My wife got a pretty good look at you.”

California’s Sky 5 helicopter invention changed the news industry around the world.

WHICH CALIFORNIA STATEMENT IS TRUE?

A. California performs the most breast implants.

B. California performs the most overall plastic surgery.

C. California performs the most “butt lifts.”

Correct answer is A, California performs and spends the most money than any other U.S. state on breast implants, aka breast augmentation. While Florida is No. 1 in performing the most “butt lifts” aka gluteal lifts or “butt augmentation” designed to lift and enhance the shape of your buttocks, and Florida also does the most overall, general plastic surgery, it is California that is No. 1 in the specific category of “breast implants” which is no surprise to most people.

Especially when one thinks of Hollywood and California’s glamour atmosphere.

All of which inspired Jay Leno, former host of “The Tonight Show,” to joke: “A new candidate for California governor is running on a platform of taxing breast implants, which of course are California’s largest natural resources.”

Leno’s joke rings with actual truth: California does in fact spend more money on breast augmentation than any other U.S. state, with San Diego among the top three cities in California that payout for breast implants.

Jay Leno’s comical notion of taxing such a procedure could, in reality, create a substantial “war chest” (yes, pun intended) in revenue.

WHICH STATEMENT IS TRUE?

A. California is the most racially diverse U.S. state in America.

B. California is the most academically educated state in America. C. California is the most linguistically diverse state in America.

If you selected C, you’re spot-on!

Aside from our home-grown, organic eccentricity and diverselycreative lifestyles, California is “officially the most linguistically diverse state in America,” with an unbelievable 220 different languages spoken. (Source: https:// statisticalatlas.com/state/California/Languages).

When it comes to the most “racially and ethnically” diverse state, Hawaii ranks first. However, the

most “linguistically diverse” U.S. state is California.

California is considered the most linguistically diverse state in the entire United States, with a whopping 46% (or nearly half) of its residents speaking a language other than English at home. This includes Spanish, which is the second most spoken language in the state, as well as Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Arabic, Armenian, Tagalog, etc. As unbelievable as it may seem, California is also home to over 200 indigenous languages that belong to at least seven different language families.

Texas is known as the second most linguistically diverse state in the country; Texas has over 160 spoken languages.

SPECIAL NOTE: Speaking of diverse language, both spoken and written, many of my online fans in Europe (viz. the U.K. where I spent several years), enjoy my British spelling of American words which comes naturally for me (for example: centre instead of center, behaviour instead of behavior, organisation instead of organization, shoppe instead of shop, etc.) The Paper is truly cosmopolitan, LOL.

This next question is not for prudish people, Jehovah Witnesses, or elderly pastors with pacemakers.

HOW MANY NUDE BEACHES ARE IN CALIFORNIA?

A. 3 nude beaches.

B. 7 nude beaches.

C. 10 nude beaches.

No doubt that California has a cutting-edge lifestyle. So, if you selected “C” – well, congratulations -- you go to the head of the class!

There are at least 10 optionalclothing (or nude) beaches in the Golden State, from north to south.

Regarding the approximately 10 nude beaches in California, San Diego County has three (official) nude beaches: Blacks Beach near Torrey Pines. Boneyard Beach at Encinitas is one of the most private nude beaches in California. And a (part) of San Onofre State Beach has a “clothing-optional” section, which is accessible by taking Trail No. 6 and walking south at the bottom of the trail. To clarify, NOT the entire San Onofre State Beach is “clothing optional,” only a portion of it, as is the case with other state beaches that have “clothing optional” guidelines. San Onofre State Beach is described on one website thusly: “It’s a wonderful, sandy beach, and a great spot to unwind without the constraints of your swimsuit.”

Because of his long hair, slender build (124 lbs) and fairly high pitched voice, he is often mistaken for a girl.

It happened on at least three occasions this past Thursday when we visited the VA.

Large methamphetamine Possession arrest

On August 16, at 9:42 p.m. police officers from the City of Carlsbad Police Department conducted a traffic enforcement stop for a vehicle code violation on Interstate 5 just north of Las Pulgas Road, Oceanside.

During the traffic enforcement stop, and with the assistance of a Carlsbad Police K-9, officers discovered 2,563 pounds of packaged crystal methamphetamine. It has an estimated street value of between $1.15 million to $3.08 million.

The driver of the vehicle, 24-yearold Eduardo Limas, a resident of Tijuana, Mexico, was arrested and booked into the San Diego County Jail, Vista Detention Facility, for charges of 11379(a)H&S, Transportation of a Controlled Substance and 11370.4(b)(4)H&S, Possession of Over 20kg of Methamphetamine. He is currently being held on $500,000 bail.

Todd was a very close nephew to Mary Todd Lincoln (wife of our 16 th U.S. President). In a handwritten letter to the Los Angeles Express, Todd had explained his new California flag design, as such: “The flag’s star imitated the Lone Star flag of Texas. The grizzly bear represented two things in California: (1) the many bears in the state and (2) the bear was a symbol of strength and unyielding resistance.”

The California State flag went through various design changes before it was officially adopted by the California State Legislature and signed into law by Governor Hiram Johnson on 3 February 1911.

However, even after 1953, flag design variations occurred, including the bear image.

Many people today are still greatly surprised to find that our California State flag was actually designed by one of Abraham Lincoln’s closest family members!

THE FERRIS WHEEL AT SANTA MONICA PIER, CALIFORNIA, IS WORLD-FAMOUS FOR WHAT REASON?

A. It is the world’s only solar-powered Ferris Wheel.

B. It is the world’s tallest &fastest Ferris Wheel.

C. It is the world’s first Ferris Wheel.

If you get this one right, well, you’re a wizard! Correct answer is “A.” Known as the “Pacific Wheel” at the amusement park at the Santa Monica Pier in California, it is the first-and-only solar powered one in the entire world, featuring over 174,000 energy-efficient LED lights that: “Display dynamic eyepopping computer-generated lighting entertainment in the evenings and, during the day, provides spectacular views of Santa Monica Bay and the Pacific Ocean.”

The famous and hugely-popular amusement park offers a variety of rides, and the solar-powered Ferris Wheel has been featured in over 500 movies and television shows, including Fat Albert, The Tonight Show, as well as the popular video game, Grand Theft Auto. The current two-acre park which features over 12 amusement park thrill rides, gift shoppes, live entertainment, 14 midway games, restaurants, and unique “over-the-ocean food and retail outlets,” and even nightclubs, is reminiscent of the

But California’s solar-powered Ferris Wheel, known as the “Pacific Wheel” is, ironically, (often) more well-known around the world than even here in America because of various Asian and European television and newscast coverage all of which holds the world’s fascination (and endorsement) for solar power usage in the world today!

The popular British pay TV channel, Sky Comedy, features California’s “Pacific Wheel” in its visual opening credits, which continues adding to the Pacific Wheel’s steady exposure internationally!

Little wonder that California has easily become the mantra and chant of world travelers regarding: “Visiting California, the most popular U.S. state for international travelers today!”

san diego’s Life sciences

San Diego County ranks third in the nation as a center for the Life Science industry after Boston and the San Francisco Bay Area. As Vice Chair of Assembly Health Committee and a member of the Assembly Select Committee on Biotechnology, I advocate for affordable and accessible life saving innovations that enhance the quality of life for millions of patients.

Overall, California leads the nation in research and development (R&D) investment and labor. Wages paid to life sciences employees in 2023 were $57 billion, with 441,770 directly employed life science workers in the state’s 18,078 life science establishments. Their average wage was $166,538.

The importance of the industry to the San Diego region cannot be overstated. The total economic output of the life sciences industry is $56.6 billion, and we receive $2.2 billion in funding from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. We have 75,816 workers directly employed by the industry in 1,966 life science establishments, with another 178,143 jobs supported in related industries. The average annual salary for local life science workers is $163,177.

Any of the above sounds too ridiculous to be true, but, if you picked A, then you are simply amazing or one lucky guesser! Believe it or not, we are comparing a U.S. state to 44 entire (countries) in Europe and yet, today – with its nearly 40 million residents -- California has a bigger population than most European countries – a bigger population than 44 European countries to be exact!

Imagine that, California vs. an entire country in population.

It is most sobering to look at this in a different perspective: Of the total 50 countries in Europe (recognised by the United Nations), only 6 of those 50 countries have populations larger than our Golden State of California.

WHICH STATEMENT BELOW IS TRUE?

A. California has the most zoos and public aquariums.

B. California has the most national parks.

With outstanding institutions like the Salk Institute for Biological Studies and the Sanford Burnham Medical Research Institute, this region has the highest density of biophysicists, chemists and biochemists in the nation. We have a huge number of small pharmaceutical startups and incubators, with San Diego being one of the fastest-rising life sciences hubs in the world. Venture investment in local biotech and medical devices reached $1.5 billion in 2023; a slight downturn from the previous year but still above pre-COVID norms.

The Life Science industry’s impact, both medially and economically, is immense. Our state and region are on the leading edge of medical research, innovation, and employment. I am proud to salute the Life Sciences industry and its ongoing role in supporting and enhancing life-saving medical research.

Assemblymember Marie Waldron, R- Valley Center, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the cities of Poway, Santee, portions of the City of San Diego, and most of rural eastern and northern San Diego County.

C. California has the most Native American reservations.

D. All of the above is true.

E. None of the above is true.

Amazingly, the correct answer is D, all of the above is true! As my neighbour might say: “HOT DAMN!”

Let’s take a quick peek at these three facts.

1. MORE ZOOS & MAJOR AQUARIUM ATTRACTIONS ARE IN CALIFORNIA. California has the highest number of businesses in the Zoos and public Aquariums industry in the United States, ranked as such: California (63 major zoos & major aquarium tourist attractions), Florida (61), Texas (50).

San Diego is also home to the largest oceanographic museum in the USA, the Birch Aquarium at Scripps. As well as gigantic aquatic and aquarium exhibits at San Diego’s Sea World park. In the category of zoos, well, the world famous San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park are without equal.

5th District Supervisor Jim Desmond support Prop 36

As we approach the upcoming election, just under 100 days away, much of the attention has been on national politics. However, I want to draw your focus to a vitally important issue that we have the power to change right here in our state.

Proposition 36 is a critical measure to address the increasing issues of theft and crime in California. In 2016, Prop 47 was passed, but it created loopholes that have been exploited by criminals, allowing theft up to $950 a day without serious repercussions. This has led to a significant increase in crime, transforming California into a place where even basic items must be kept behind locked doors for protection.

Prop 36 aims to rectify this by restoring meaningful consequences for theft and addressing the downgrading of felonies to

misdemeanors. It is essential for restoring law and order and ensuring the safety and prosperity of our communities.

This is one of the main issues that I will be focused on addressing in the upcoming election, and I would love your support. We plan to get the word out through social media and digital marketing. It could make a significant difference in this election if you can chip in $5 to help us reach new voters!

We need your support to make this change. Please vote YES on Proposition 36 to restore accountability and safety to our state. Together, we can make a difference and create a brighter future for all.

2. MORE NATIONAL PARKS ARE IN CALIFORNIA. The United States officially has 63 national parks, which are Congressionallydesignated protected areas operated by the National Park Service, an agency of the Department of the Interior. Only 30 U.S. states have national parks, including U.S. territories, such as the Virgin Island, etc.

California has the most national parks in the entire United States with a total of nine. The total acreage of these nine national parks in California is more than 6.3 million acres.

Some of the most well-known national parks in California include Channel Islands National Park, Joshua Tree National Park, Sequoia National Park, Kings Canyon Park, and Pinnacles National Park, to cite just a few examples. Yosemite is California’s most popular National Park because of its popular picturesque mountains and massive Yosemite Falls. The 1200-square mile Yosemite Park is among the most beautiful in the entire world.

Just take a moment to ponder: Many of these truly ancient trees were alive more than eleven centuries before Egypt’s pyramids were even built . . . and these same trees are still living today!

This is a most intoxicating fact to ponder!

3. MORE NATIVE AMERIC RESERVATIONS ARE IN CALIFORNIA. Throughout the U.S there are 567 federally recognised Native American reservations. California alone has 103 reservations that are recognised by the federal government and which belong to 110 federally recognised tribes, which is the most of any other U. S. state. California also has the highest total population of Native Americans in the entire U.S. with almost 400,000 living within the Golden Bear State.

And the Sequoia National Forest in Sierra Nevada, California, is world-renowned for its living ancient giant redwood and sequoia trees.

Some 56 years ago the 1968 Democratic National Convention was held Aug. 26-29, at the International Amphitheatre in Chicago. Earlier that year incumbent President Lyndon B. Johnson had announced he would not seek reelection, thus making the purpose of the convention to select a new presidential nominee for the Democratic Party.

Who says history doesn’t repeat itself?

The most contentious issues of the 1968 convention were the continuing American military involvement in the Vietnam War and voting reform expanding the right to vote for draft-age soldiers who were unable to vote because the voting age was 21.

The Democratic Party was divided when U.S. Sen. Eugene McCarthy entered the campaign in November 1967, challenging incumbent President Johnson for the Democratic

The ’68 convention was held during a year of riots, political turbulence, and mass civil unrest. The assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in April of that year was followed by riots in more than 100 cities. The convention also followed the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy on June 5, further derailed the convention, paving the way for Vice President Hubert Humphrey, a prowar candidate.

Johnson, facing dissent within his party, announced on March 31, he would not seek re-election.

In his television address announcing his withdrawal from the presidential race, Johnson also announced the United States would stop bombing North Vietnam north of the 19th parallel and was willing to open peace talks.

On April 27, Humphrey entered into the race but did not compete in any primaries; instead he inherited the delegates previously pledged to Johnson and then collected delegates in caucus states, especially in caucuses controlled by local Democratic bosses.

Peace talks had begun in Paris, but almost immediately became dead-

The Escondido Police Department arrested two drivers on suspicion of DUI during an enforcement detail on Wednesday, August 14. An additional 51 motorists were cited for violations that rank high for causing crashes.

“We are committed to taking impaired drivers off the road,” Chief of Police Ed Varso said. “Driving under the influence is not only dangerous, but also has major consequences.”

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.

On August 15, at 8:02 p.m. the City of Carlsbad Police Department was called to the intersection of Batiquitos Drive and Daisy Avenue due to a traffic collision involving a vehicle and an electric motorcycle.

On arrival, officers found the rider of the electric motorcycle, a juvenile, injured in the intersection and being treated by bystanders. The juvenile rider was treated by the Carlsbad Fire Department for major injuries and was then transported to the hospital for further treatment.

Daley of Chicago, had refused permission for “anti-patriotic” groups to demonstrate and had the International Amphitheatre, where the convention was being held, ringed with barbed wire while putting the 11,000 officers of the Chicago Police Department on 12-hour shifts. the PHMG locations have been successfully restored and patients can schedule an appointment by calling their doctor’s office. Information confidentiality, privacy and security are top priorities for PHMG. During an investigation, it was determined that, although there was unauthorized access to some data, PHMG acted promptly and took measures to secure and protect their patients. Over the past two months, PHMG worked with its cybersecurity teams around the clock to recover and secure affected data. These comprehensive efforts ensured that affected data was recovered and removed from unauthorized locations.

Currently, PHMG is working diligently to continue its investigation through a detailed review of the affected data to identify whether any individuals had their personal or health information impacted by the incident. If so, PHMG will communicate directly with those impacted individuals as soon as more information is available. PHMG thanks its patients and community for their understanding during this time.

To avoid any confusion, Alaska has the highest number of Native Americans (or indigenous people) -- but only in ratio or “relative” to its entire population within the state. In other words, in Alaska, Native Americans make up 19.74% of the state’s total population, or about 145,000 total Indigenous people within the state of Alaska.

In contrast, California’s overall total population of 400,000 Native Americans dwarves that of Alaska’s 145,000 indigenous people. California stands alone, by far!

SPECIAL THANKS TO ALL MY READER FANS.

From California to my online fans from Colorado to New York, Florida, and parts of Europe where I have countless acquaintances, viz. in Germany, Austria, and the U.K -- I thank you all. I fondly remember back on 1 December 2016, I was a simple but happy cashier at Walmart when I wrote a cover story for The Paper titled “When Marilyn Monroe Came to Towne.” A fortnight after it was published I was contacted by the International President of the Marilyn Monroe Fan Club in Italy! He wanted, he yearned, he asked for any morsel, any new in-

sight, any unknown trivia on Marilyn Monroe. Such “fun data” was the “lifeblood” of their happy organisation. Are people no longer allowed to just have frivolous fun together, have hobbies, or enjoy fan club camaraderie? One great sin is selfishness. We may begin to think that only our interests, only our hobbies are worthy – while other people don’t count – such as with this Italian fan club. So, to all of you who are reading this, please continue sending me your story ideas. To all of you who requested a sequel to my “California’s Mind-Blowing Facts” -- this cover story is dedicated.

You are all important, deeply valued, and respected. In German, I say “Ich liebe euch alle” (I love you all).

In 1958 after the USAF, I got a job that took me to Vandenburg AFB, then to Librascope in Glendale and finally to Librascope, San Marcos, 1960.

Got married (1968) here in Escondido. A year or so later I bought a 1+ acre home (where I still live) and in short time I purchase my first horse. Over the years there were more horses and 3 more born and raised. So enough of me.

A couple days ago my wife was at Urgent Care and your THE Paper was in the waiting room and knowing my youthful story about cowboys, she brought it home. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about all the movie cowboys. Small world - a good friend of mine in Vista is Roy Roger’s nephew.

Finally, maybe you could do a piece about the Poker Parlors that were in Escondido before they were voted out in 1972. The ones I remember are Slim’s (N. Grand), the Flamingo, S. Broadway next to the old Chevy dealer, Honest John’s on what is now Valley Pkwy and a couple more on Grand.

Lastly, I got your Paper by accident. Where can I find it from here on? And, if you should do a piece on the Poker Parlors, could you let me know.

P.S. I played poker in the Flamingo with Wil Mason, former Esco City Mayor.

I want Lyle E Davis to know how much I enjoyed the extensive article on Hoppy, Gene and Roy.

My cousin and I are big old time fans of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans and the horses and sidekicks.

Lyle’s article was so informative and inclusive regarding other early western cowboys too.

I’m sending my cousin a copy of this The Paper

The Pastor says . . . Passages

In The Biblical book of Matthew 7:13-14, Jesus describes two ways of life, “The wide way and the narrow way.” He encourages people to seek the narrow way because it leads to life in Him. The wide way, which most follow without Him, leads to destruction and death. What are these ways, and how does one follow? M. Scott Peck, an author in 1935, wrote a book, “The Road Less Traveled,” which became a best seller because it challenged people to seek and follow a way of life offering more rewards and satisfaction than a life of ease and temporary fulfillment. The Biblical claims of Jesus and Peck describe passages we can follow.

These passages and choices remind me of a story I read long ago about a person who was offered the option of going through one of three doors, each leading to a destination of happiness and riches or one of loss and despair. The author posited a factor we all face: the opportunity to choose a passage of happiness and success or a life of loss and bitterness. Such passages are offered to us daily.

There is the passage of despair and negativity; this passage confronts us daily, often with feelings and the news. Suppose we believe the day will be unenergetic, unfulfilling, painful, and empty of purpose. In that case, that passage will lead to a miserable experience. Often, the news will open this passage, depending on our value system. It could ruin our day if that system depends on the stock market index or our social and political beliefs and claims.

Sometimes, our passage is thrust upon us through death, accident, or sickness. Those who have lost loved ones or suffer an incurable disease are forced into a passage of adjustments, decisions, hardships, and often new relationships. Moving through those passages can be difficult and lead to depression, bitterness, anger, and even suicide.

How one keeps faith and balance in those passages is determined by the support of friends, family, society, and religion. Perhaps the best and most helpful is one’s faith. The Biblical Psalmist often went through difficult and trying times. Often, his passages left him feeling deserted by friends, family, and even God. The narrow way of the Psalmist was to commit his way to God, trusting with hope in Him, and then believing in God’s own time; those painful and challenging days would pass; he refused to surrender to the broad way of life without a loving and caring God, and a life of pessimism and misery. The support and faith we have can guide us through even the most challenging passages, providing reassurance and strength. Which way will we choose?

ollie

Meet Ollie! This handsome young guy was quite fearful when he first came into the shelter, but with time and support, his fearful behavior has disappeared and he has formed good relationships with his caregivers. Ollie’s previous owner reports that Ollie chases cats so it’s best that he goes to a home without cats. He is good with dogs, especially small dogs, and may do well with another canine companion in his new home! Because Ollie can be fearful in new situations, we suggest that any children in the home be 10 years of age or older. If you’re ready to open your heart and home to a truly wonderful pup, give this special guy a shot! The Dodos’ were fifty pound, fruit eating flightless birds that inhabited remote Islands in the Indian Ocean for twenty five million years. In the early 17th century Dutch sailors discovered the last population of these awkward, fearless but tasty birds on the island of Mauritius, and by end of the century they had gobbled up “The Last of the Dodos”.

Like the Dodo, the last DIs or Digital Immigrants (everyone born before1985)) will exit the planet sometime in the 21st century. That will mark the end of the four million year reign of the human mind as the pinnacle of intelligence on this Planet. All subsequent Earthlings will be DNs or Digital Natives (born after1985) and raised with 24/7 mobile access to the IW (Intelligent Web). DNs are cognitive hybrids seamlessly integrating the assets of the IW (Intelligent Web) as components of their internal cognition. Broadband Internet

A reporter friend asked about our “inventory” at Rancho Coastal Humane Society during the construction project. It sounded like he was talking about used cars.

While there may be some similarities, you’re never going to see our animal care attendants or adoption counselors wearing plaid jackets.

arrived in 2001 and “smart phone” mobile access in 2007. This combination created the IW ( Intelligent Web). The IW will eventually influence all human activities. The massive data storage capability of the Internet coupled with the constantly improving power of AI has begun to challenge human intelligence in virtually every discipline.

It is difficult to comprehend the impact the IW will have on humanity. The venerable “renaissance man” was a much admired individual educated and knowledgeable in several fields. The “renaissance man” no longer exists. Exploding technology has eliminated the possibility for a human to be well educated in multiple fields of study. Technology continues to create ever deeper and more diverse fields of learning. In medicine alone there are 20 major fields and over 150 specialties each requiring years of training. Law, teaching, engineering, architecture and nearly every other occupational category suffers from the same exploding technology and specialization. We have become a world of specialists, each able to hold deep esoteric knowledge in his own specialty and having little deep learning in other fields.

As human knowledge rapidly expands even the smartest of us can store only a tiny and ever shrinking percentage of it.

The IW has an answer. The information that “specialists‘ spend years tucking away in their brains and the intelligence to process is becoming instantly available 24/7 on the IW for anyone that wants or needs it. How will this fact affect the value and incomes of highly

paid professionals like doctors, lawyers and engineers?

Younger DNs have an advantage over we older DIs when it comes to adopting new technology. They are more trusting of AI and automated resources and less encumbered by preconceived notions or conflicting data. We DIs feel obligated to reason test new information against our internal data base questioning anything that conflicts with preestablished information. At best this reluctance slows our adoption of new technology. At worst it can create denial and resentment toward the DNs unquestioning acceptance of new technology. Conversely, DI’s stubborn reluctance to embrace new technology abets the “old fogey” image the leads to head shaking amongst the DNs.

Since the dawn of time we “fogeys” have always been ridiculed by the “whippersnappers” for being

“stuck in the past” and reluctant to adopt the “new ways”. Today’s rapid pace of evolving technology simply exacerbates this ancient “generation’s gap”. Older generations will always tend hold on to the “old ways’’ and regard change with suspicion. It’s a defense mechanism that’s been “hard wired” into our DNA for millennia. Younger generations have no loyalty to traditional “ways” and eagerly accept new “ways” in the name of progress. We humans, whether DIs or DNs, are not able to significantly change the way we view the World. What we can do is take our emotions out of the judgment process.

In 1945 Rogers and Hammerstein wrote “The Farmers and the Cowmen Should be friends” for their epic production of “Oklahoma”. An updated version could be “The DIs and DNs should be friends” Why not?

staying Connected to the WWW

In the 21st century, Internet connectivity has become essential to modern living. It is the most complete source of contemporary entertainment, news, communication, information and learning. It is also the only centralized entry point to the entirety of human history, religion and knowledge. Access devices and applications are in constant evolution but in the present, these three access devices provide what you need to stay conveniently connected 7/24.

The comfortable PC workstation ( tower, notebook, All-in-one, micro) is perfect for home. Voice activated Digital Assistants compliment the home or office workstation. Your Android or Apple smart phone completes the picture.

We’ve been here on San Marcos Blvd. building repairing and upgrading Windows PCs since 1995 and we’ve seen it all and frankly, PCs are more reliable, simpler and cheaper than ever. We’ll be happy to take a look at your PC and advise you as to what you need to stay in the game.

Nobody’s going to try to talk you into buying an extended warranty that covers your pet from head to tail. And we’ll never ask, “What do we need to do to get you to drive this puppy off the lot today?”

What you’ll find at Rancho Coastal Humane Society and our shelter and rescue partners is a great selection of quality, pre-owned dogs, cats, and rabbits and an experienced Adoption staff to serve you.

We’re here to make a match…not a profit. When someone comes in looking for a pet, our goal is to help them find the pet that fits their lifestyle, their home, and their schedule.

We want you to be happy. We don’t want you to get home and have buyer’s remorse. We want the pet that goes home with you to stay there. We want to send you home with the right pet the first time.

Our inventory includes different breeds, ages, sizes, personalities, and mixes. Variety is what gets people to visit a shelter. Sometimes people come to meet a particular cat or dog, then they get here and find another pet that is a better match for them.

Every pet gets a safety inspection by our trained medical staff. We top off the fluids / vaccinations, make

sure microchips are installed, operating correctly, and registered.

After that we take the animals for a test drive in the dog exercise yards or cat play room. If there are any concerns, we want to take care of them here before you take your new pet home.

We believe that there’s an ideal family for every pet. It’s our job to find that family and make a match that lasts a lifetime. Every animal deserves a tomorrow.

Service Hours in the RCHS Adoption department are 11 to 4 Thursday through Monday and by appointment on Wednesdays.

Man About Town from page 5

“No,” says I, “as I am wearing Birkenstock sandals”.

“And lovely sandals they are, sir”, at which time I laid a dollar tip in his outstretched paw.

The next morning we took the hotel bus to the terminal, enjoying the free ride, giving the driver two dollars as a tip for loading 2.5 pieces of luggage.

I bade SWMBO farewell, gave her a hug, a wee farewell kiss, and gave her a dollar tip. I think by now it was force of habit.

I returned to hotel and checked out. Upon checking out I examined my bill. There were five phone calls I had made, collect, to my businesses. The hotel had charged me $0.75 “access charge” for each call. Steam began to come out of my ears. Nonetheless, being the suave and sophisticated world traveler that I am I signed for the bill, and laid a dollar tip in the outstretched paw of the cashier.

The valet brought me my car, naturally I put a dollar in his paw as he bade me “tu tiene muy bien dia” (Have a nice day).

I had a large bag of sunflower seeds that I had intended on eating while driving home to San Diego. They had been stolen. I was upset at having to pay $18 for valet parking and then being ripped off for a lousy bag of sunflower seeds. But, as there was no one to give a dollar tip to, I simply came home.

I thought I had shaken off the effects of life in the big city but then the mailman came. You guessed it. As he was leaving I laid a dollar tip in his hand. He looked at me kinda funny but I couldn’t help but notice that he didn’t give the dollar back.

Five weeks to go before I get Mary back. Think I’ll send a limousine to LA to pick her up. It’s probably cheaper.

rthy, Daley was enraged, giving a rambling press conference saying, “This is a vicious attack on this city and its mayor.”

The leaders of the Yippies (Youth International Party), Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin, specialized in outlandish, bizarre rhetoric that attracted maximum media attention, and Daley took many of their more outrageous threats seriously.

Daley’s heavy-handed security measures incensed the media. CBS

editor Walter Cronkite complained of … “a totally unwarranted restriction of free and rapid access to information.”

CBS commentator Eric Sevareid said Chicago “runs the city of Prague, (which at that time was under Soviet control) a close second right now as the world’s least attractive tourist destination.” Undercover agents had infiltrated the protesters, including agents from the Central Intelligence Agency, who, contrary to U.S. law, had been sent to spy upon American citizens.

In late August more than 10,000 people had arrived in Chicago to protest the Vietnam War. The Chicago police raided the mostly black neighborhoods of South Chicago to stage mass arrests of the Blackstone Rangers, a black power group that was alleged to be planning to assassinate Vice President Humphrey.

At the convention itself, tensions were much evident between prowar and anti-war Democrats. The more “dovish” Democrats favored accepting the North Vietnamese demand while more “hawkish” Democrats demanded the North Vietnamese promise not to send any men down the “’Ho Chi Minh Trail” as their precondition for a bombing pause, a demand the North Vietnamese rejected.

Complicating the 1968, election was the third party candidacy of Alabama Gov. George Wallace, who ran on a white supremacist platform promising to undo all of the changes wrought by the 1964 Civil Rights Movement.

President Johnson distrusted Vice President Humphrey and had the FBI illegally tap his telephones to find out what he was planning to do. At the same time, though Johnson had announced he had dropped out of the election, he sent his friend John Connally, the governor of Texas, to meet with other Democratic governors of southern states attending the convention to inquire if they would be willing to support nominating Johnson to be the Democratic candidate after all. It remains unclear if Johnson was serious about re-entering the presidential race, or if he was merely using the prospect of running again as a way to keep Humphrey from straying too far from his Vietnam policies. Regardless of what Johnson was intending, Connally had to tell his fellow Texan that general feeling about Johnson being the Democratic candidate in 1968 was: “No way!”

The security measures imposed by Daley had been so intense that it was not possible to walk across the convention floor without jostling other delegates, which added to the tensions as “dovish” and “hawkish” Democrats fiercely argued about whether to accept Johnson’s

war plank to the platform. All of it was captured live on national television.

In the end, the Democratic Party nominated Humphrey, who had not entered any of the 13 state primary elections. The nomination was watched by 89 million Americans. The three major networks, CBS, NBC, and ABC, broadcast live the so-called “Battle of Michigan Avenue” that was taking place in front of the Conrad Hilton hotel in downtown Chicago. The police sprayed demonstrators and bystanders with mace. Police indiscriminately attacked all who were present, whether involved in the demonstrations or not.

The election of 1968 was one of the closest ever in American history with Nixon winning 31.7 million votes, Humphrey 31.2 million votes and Wallace a few more than 10 million votes. Compared to the 1968 convention, with its many similarities, this week’s 2024 Convention in Chicago will probably be relatively calm. To be sure, no matter how it’s read, the year 1968, was a dark time in our American history.

TO THE HONORABLE KATHY RALLINGS: Pursuant to Section 11020, California Elections Code, the undersigned registered qualified voters of the Carlsbad Unified School District Trustee Area #5, in the State of California, hereby give notice that we are the proponents of a recall petition and that we intend to seek your recall and removal from the office of Trustee of the Board of Education, in the County of San Diego, City of Carlsbad, Trustee Area #5. The grounds for the recall are as follows:

We, the proponents of the Intent to Recall Carlsbad Unified School District (CUSD) Trustee, Kathy Rallings, agree that ALL school children are protected by the Civil Rights Act of 1964, from discrimination based on age, sex, religion, and national origin.

However, Trustee Kathy Rallings, has instituted a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) program, including Critical Race Theory (CRT), betraying the innocence of our young children. These EXTREMIST programs ARE NOT NECESSARY! Current nondiscrimination laws and CUSD disciplinary policies and procedures are already in place. DEIB and CRT are POLITICAL PLOYS to promote inappropriate political and sexual agendas. Furthermore, Superintendent Benjamin Churchill, with questionable academic credentials, has been targeting personnel for disciplinary actions who do not agree with his WOKE agenda.

We, the undersigned, believe the DEIB and CRT policies infringe upon the rights of Carlsbad parents, who desire to teach their children parental values as they feel appropriate regarding sex and politics.

DEIB and CRT are nothing more than politically funded, entitlement-based, virtue signaling. We believe teachers should focus on academic subjects and merit-based grading, and not force gender questioning, undeserved racial guilt, and inappropriate sexual material on our young innocent children.

The printed names, signatures, and residence addresses of the proponents are as follows:

The original notice and proof of service will be filed with the Secretary of State, County Elections Official, City Clerk, Secretary of District, as appropriate.

Elections Code section 11023. (a) Within seven days after the filing of the notice of intention, the officer sought to be recalled may file with the elections official, or in the case of a state officer, the Secretary of State, an answer, in not more than 200 words, to the statement of the proponents.

(b) If an answer is filed, the officer shall, within seven days after the filing of the notice of intention, also serve a copy of it, by personal delivery or by certified mail, on one of the proponents named in the notice of intention.

(c) The answer shall be signed and shall be accompanied by the printed name and business or residence address of the officer sought to be recalled.

TO THE HONORABLE MICHELE TSUTAGAWA WARD: Pursuant to Section 11020, California Elections Code, the undersigned registered qualified voters of the Carlsbad Unified School District Trustee Area #1, in the State of California, hereby give notice that we are the proponents of a recall petition and that we intend to seek your recall and removal from the office of Trustee of the Board of Education, in the County of San Diego, City of Carlsbad, Trustee Area #1. The grounds for the recall are as follows:

We, the proponents of the Intent to Recall Carlsbad Unified School District (CUSD) Trustee, Michele Tsutagawa Ward, agree that ALL school children are protected by the Civil Rights Act of 1964, from discrimination based on age, sex, religion, and national origin.

However, Trustee Michele Tsutagawa Ward, has instituted a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) program, including Critical Race Theory (CRT), betraying the innocence of our young children.
