Depending on who you ask, the historical Jesus is different things to different people. Discuss him with an orthodox Jew, Hindu, Mormon, Buddhist, Muslim, atheist, et al, and you will readily find that this one individual is seen through prismatic lighting.

WHAT DID SUCH ANCIENT SOURCES SAY ABOUT HIM?

that it is a shared consensus among the most established antiquity scholars worldwide, both Christian and secular.

Roman scholar and politician Pliny, as well as Roman governor and historian Tacitus hated Jesus and his newly-found Christian followers. Pliny, in particular, writes of this religious revolutionary upstart as follows: “Pig-headed obstinacy.”

Even his detractors grant him historical reality. Instead, they position themselves as doubtful regarding his claim to divinity.

JESUS IS CITED IN GREAT ABUNDANCE BY EVEN (NONCHRISTIAN SOURCES) THOUSANDS OF YEARS AGO. Jesus is recorded as a historical reality by many non-religious sources in the ancient world. Many such sources vilified him and wished him never to have existed. Ironically, their hatred of him and their venomous writing of him only served to prove his historical reality for us today.

BBQ RULES We are about to enter the BBQ season. Therefore it is important to refresh your memory on the etiquette of this sublime outdoor cooking activity. When a man volunteers to do the BBQ the following chain of events are put into motion: (1) The woman buys the food.

(2) The woman makes the salad, prepares the vegetables, and makes dessert.

(3) The woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on a tray

And Tacitus viciously labels Jesus a rebel and his new religion as “destructive superstition.”

Outside the parameters of the Christian faith, there is no shortage of ancient secular writings, all of which attest and corroborate the historicity of this so-called rebellious Jew we call Jesus of Nazareth.

TWO THOUSAND YEAR-OLDE DOCUMENTS DURING JESUS’ DAY EVEN RECORD HIS CRUCIFIXION AT CALVARY IN ‘REAL TIME.’ Ancient, two thousand-year-olde documents during Jesus’ day even record his crucifixion as it happened. Even the ancient writings in the Babylonian Talmud (a collection of Jewish rabbinical writings dating back 21 centuries) are among the earliest references to the historical Jesus, whom the corrupt Jewish leaders feared and labeled as a dangerous religious iconoclast known as Jesus, today.

(9) The woman prepares the plates, salad, bread, utensils, napkins, sauces, and brings them to the table.

(10) After eating, the woman clears the table and does the dishes.

And most important of all: (11) Everyone PRAISES the MAN and THANKS HIM for his cooking efforts.

AS RECORDED IN THE 2,000 YEAR-OLDE BABYLONIIAN TALMUD. The 2,000 year-olde Babylonian Talmud (of Jewish Rabbinical writings) chronicles his death and affords us a rare historical glimpse of Jesus (during his lifetime) and gives us an eerie peek ‘in real time’ such as this entry (translated from ancient Hebrew to English): “On the eve of Passover, Yeshua was hanged (on the wooden crucifix).”

(Note to the reader: Yeshua was his true name; he was never called Jesus during his lifetime.)

The ancient Hebrew script further attests to his accused crime of: “Practicing sorcery and enticing Israel to apostasy.”

(Note: Apostasy is defined as “The abandonment or renunciation (rejection) of an established religious or political belief.”)

Also, the ancient satirist, Lucian, as well as philosopher, Celsus, both characterised Jesus as “a scoundrel.”

The Jewish leaders, including the Sanhedrin (the Jewish ruling council), initially accused Jesus of blasphemy for claiming to be the Son of God. By the strictures of antiquity, there was never any debate in the an-

cient world whether Jesus of Nazareth was a historical figure. Today, it is universally agreed upon – by both Christian and secular scholars, alike – that the man known as Jesus of Nazareth truly existed.

As modern Jewish author, scholar, and professor, Rabbi Lewis D. Solomon states: “Two thousand years ago Jesus walked the face of the earth, of that there is no doubt.”

However, it should be noted that the esteemed Rabbi Solomon, does not subscribe to Jesus being the true Messiah (Mashiach). (“Jesus Through Jewish Eyes,” by Beatrice Bruteau, editor. Orbis Books, New York, 2001.)

Whether Jesus existed or not is no longer a cogent query, though there will always be those who will persist in that regard, usually outside the realm of serious scholarship credentials. As such, those elements are not attributed sober consideration.

RULE-BREAKING - AN ANALYSIS. HIS REASONING SEEMED NOT OF THIS WORLD. As a rule-breaker, this historical figure, Jesus, was a thorn to established Jewish faith. So much so, that it would eventually lead to his crucifixion at Calvary. One highly Jesus continued on page 3

Jesus from page 2 public scenario was a scandalous event, which backfired on the religious leaders who wished to exploit it for their own means.

It involved one of the most famous women in the Christian Bible, Mary Magdalene. Early in the morning this Jesus, the unpredictable iconoclast, walked into the temple and commenced teaching wisdom from the Torah when he was abruptly interrupted by the scribes and Pharisees who had plotted to trap him.

Into his midst they brought a woman named Mary Magdalene.

The Pharisees and scribes pointed to her and one said aloud, “Teacher, this woman was caught in adultery – in the very act! Now, Moses, in the Law, commanded that such a person must be stoned.”

Logically, there was no way to escape the dilemma: If this Nazarene frees her, he would openly and clearly break the Law of Moses in front of all the people assembled before him. If he agrees to have her stoned, the horrifying spectacle and bloodshed that stoning-todeath brings, would forever tarnish Jesus’ preaching of compassion, forgiveness, and love.

Biblical scholars substantiate that this Jewish Rabbi Jesus, stooped down without reply and calmly wrote on the ground with his finger, as though he did not hear.

His plotters eagerly persisted: “But teacher, what do you say?”

The plot was well-planned: even if this Messianic figure said nothing, then they could claim he lacked wisdom, and therefore, not the Anointed One which many had begun to proclaim.

It is recounted how he continued to draw silently on the ground and when they persisted for an answer, he gave one that was neither yes, no, or silence (all of which would have discredited him).

Extraordinary for his day, the Nazarene, instead, answered their question with a question, which evaded the plotter’s carefully precalculated trap.

He gave a disguised answer wrapped in a query: “Who among you is without sin, for the law also commands that such a person should cast the very first stone?”

Even contemporary secular academicians regard this as a most startling and brilliant dialogue, reminiscent of what scholars today call ‘elenctic methodology’ which was

not known in that part of the ancient Jewish world. This dialogue and the subsequent ‘word-exchange’ is critiqued as unique genius; a subtle yet profound exhibition of archaic wisdom, unprecedented for its time and place.

SEPARATION OF CHURCH & STATE. The Pharisees had previously approached Jesus, asking him in another well-devised plot: “Should the Jews pay taxes to Caesar?”

If Jesus were to answer yes, he would condone the enslavement of his people under brutal Roman law. If he answered no, then he would openly breach Emperor Tiberius’ law.

The trap was calculated to perfection. Ostensibly, to human logic, there was no viable way out of this dilemma.

The Pharisees prodded him, till Jesus finally asked his accusers to show him a coin and inquired of them, whose image is upon it.

They obliged, extending a Roman denarius coin with the likeness of Tiberius upon it with the inscription: “TIBERIVS CAESAR DIVI AVGVSTI FILIVS AVGVSTVS.” (Translation from Latin: “Tiberius Caesar, Son of the Divine Augustus, Augustus.”)

After producing the denarius coin, his enemies continued taunting him for a reply. The defiant Jesus’ answer would emerge unexpectedly and his accusers would be thunderstruck at the ingenious retort, which extricated him from condemnation.

Pointing to the coin’s image, Jesus replied: “Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s. Render unto the Lord the things that are the Lord’s.”

As hateful as they were, they withdrew, as if stunned into submission. Their mortal, earth-bound wisdom had confirmed to them that their question would be foolproof and yet, somehow, their eyes were suddenly skinned; their ears somehow re-pierced. It is recorded in Matthew 22:22 that: “They marveled and being satisfied with the answer, they went away.”

In other scenarios, this same historical Jesus seemed both perplexing and profound; both genius and madman. To the ancient world, his ideas often seemed far too impossible to understand. He often spoke of Invisible Governments and the Powers of Principalities.

Walk For Animals May 3rd San Diego Humane Society is excited to invite the community to register now for its 31st annual Walk for Animals — San Diego, taking place at NTC Park in Liberty Station on May 3rd.. He is a short haired, tight-muscled kid who, under normal circumstances is considered by society as half man, half boy. Not yet dry behind the ears, not old enough to buy a beer, but old enough to die for his country. He never really cared much for work and he would rather wax his own car than wash his father’s, but he has never collected unemployment either.

He’s a recent High School graduate; he was probably an average student, pursued some form of sport activities, drives a ten year old jalopy, and has a steady girl-

He is 10 or 15 pounds lighter now than when he was at home because he is working or fighting from before dawn to well after dusk. He has trouble spelling, thus letter writing is a pain for him, but he can field strip a rifle in 30 seconds and reassemble it in less time in the dark. He can recite to you the nomenclature of a machine gun or grenade launcher and use either one effectively if he must.

He digs foxholes and latrines and can apply first aid like a professional.

He can march until he is told to stop, or stop until he is told to march.

He obeys orders instantly and without hesitation, but he is not without spirit or individual dignity. He is self-sufficient.

Jesus from page 3 good vs. evil in the physical world which, he voiced, are the true underpinnings that cause misunderstandings, wars, bloodshed, and rampant injustice.

To established thinking, he was again, thought to be touched with lunacy.

His interpretation of reality seemed beyond human comprehension for its time. Only faith, not intellect, kept his disciples loyal.

He viewed Scripture from a remarkably different angle and perception, a radical departure from established Jewish religious thinking.

For example, it was prophesied that their Savior would establish a kingdom on Earth. For Jesus, this prophecy was, erroneously, taken literally to mean a physical, military kingdom which would topple the established despotic rulers and liberate the Jews from their enslavement. It was far too abstract for them to envision a spiritual kingdom, an unseen kingdom, which girds the world today, making Christianity the most prevalent and powerful influence and spiritual force in existence.

He sometimes forgets to brush his teeth, but never to clean his rifle.

He can cook his own meals, mend his own clothes, and fix his own hurts.

If you’re thirsty, he’ll share his water with you; if you are hungry, his food. He’ll even split his ammunition with you in the midst of battle when you run low.

He has learned to use his hands like weapons and weapons like they were his hands.

He can save your life - or take it, because that is his job.

He will often do twice the work of a civilian, draw half the pay, and still find ironic humor in it all.

He has seen more suffering and death than he should have in his short lifetime.

He has wept in public and in private, for friends who have fallen in combat and is unashamed.

He feels every note of the Na-

To his contemporaries, enemies and followers alike, he seemed to speak in strange riddles.

For both his detractors and disciples, Jesus would often remain vastly misunderstood.

He once confused the most brilliant religious teacher of his day with his interpretation of Jewish rabbinical truth and Biblical Law, by telling the scholarly Nicodemus: “You know the letter of the law, but you do not know the spirit of the law.”

Nicodemus, the scholarly expert on the Torah and who had no equal in interpreting Jewish Scripture – was suddenly confused. Nicodemus (Pharisee and member of the Jewish Sanhedrin) could not fathom its meaning, nor could he comprehend the terminology of being “reborn.”

“How can a man re-enter his mother’s womb?” he would ask.

According to Christian historians, Jesus’ contemporaries could not see the apparent “spirit of the law” in regards to Mary Magdalene, nor the outcome of it which ostensibly resulted in her becoming “reborn” as a disciple.

Also, the letter of the law demanded she be stoned to death; the spirit of the law commanded compassion and mercy: “Let him without sin tional Anthem vibrate through his body while at rigid attention, while tempering the burning desire to’ square-away’ those around him who haven’t bothered to stand, remove their hat, or even stop talking. In an odd twist, day in and day out, far from home, he defends their right to be disrespectful.

Just as did his Father, Grandfather, and Great-grandfather, he is paying the price for our freedom. Beardless or not, he is not a boy. He is the American Fighting Man that has kept this country free for over 200 years.

He has asked nothing in return, except our friendship and understanding.

Remember him, always, for he has earned our respect and admiration with his blood.

And now we even have women over there in danger, doing their part in this tradition of going to War when our nation calls us to do so. *** I’ve decided to focus at least 20% of my daily activities on inventing

Whether Christian, Jew, or atheist, it is noteworthy that this Mary Magdalene is recorded to have stood, resolute, at the foot of Jesus’ eventual and ignominious crucifixion, just outside the walls of Jerusalem, whilst all but one male disciple scattered with fear.

According to the Gospel of Mark, only 3 women remained at the foot of Jesus’ cross. Christian scholars identify them as: Mary Magdalene, Mary (Jesus’ mother) and Mary’s sister Salome (Mary of Clopas).

Other women were said to be in the vicinity, but not at the foot of his cross.

Earlier, the disciple Peter Simon (whom Jesus called “The Rock”) faltered in his mighty faith and disavowed 3 different times that he even knew the Rabbi Jesus, out of fear of being held complicit with his alleged crimes.

Pilate on various charges from his Jewish accusers, including misleading the Jewish people (a religious subversive), evading taxation, as well as proclaiming to be a “king,” (King of the Jews) – which is certainly a dangerous rebellious statement of defiance to Emperor Tiberius’ reign.

Pilate, the 5th Prefect of Rome, was a pagan first, then a subordinate to Roman rule, second. Instinctively, he first had to answer to his own private demons of superstition.

The Jewish vagabond who now stood before him was no ordinary man he was dealing with. The best minds of his enemies could not chart his motives, nor predict his responses but, instead, they were shocked at his unexpected exploits and powers of reasoning.

Pilate was fully aware of these antecedents and fully informed of his past brushes of the law.

To put things in perspective: Between 2005 and 2016, California saw a 51% reduction in chronic homelessness. But in 2016, the state embraced “Housing First”—a policy that removed accountability and abandoned treatment for addiction and mental health. The result? Chronic homelessness increased by 93% between 2016 and 2022. Today, nearly one-third of all homeless individuals in America live right here in California.

Last week, I had the honor of meeting with Scott Turner, the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. This wasn’t just a meeting—it was a critical step forward in addressing one of the most pressing issues facing our region: homelessness.

Let me be clear—homelessness in California is not a money problem, it’s a policy problem. For years, Sacramento politicians have poured billions of dollars into this crisis, yet the problem continues to grow.

Nonprofits have become bloated, bureaucracy has flourished, and the people who need help the most— those battling mental illness and addiction—are left to suffer and die on our streets. That’s not compassion. That’s failure. And I told Secretary Turner exactly that. I’m pleased to say—he agreed.

Secretary Turner and I discussed real, tangible solutions to this crisis, and I believe you’re going to start seeing a shift toward common sense policies in the months ahead.

Meanwhile, the rest of the nation has actually seen a decrease in homelessness. The difference is policy.

One of the most encouraging moments from my meeting with Secretary Turner was hearing his vision to revitalize cities—something we desperately need. We’ve all seen it, even in Downtown San Diego: sidewalks taken over, families avoiding certain areas, and businesses struggling to stay open.

That’s not the future we want.

When I went to Washington, I didn’t go to fight for a party—I went to fight for you. For your safety, your families, your communities, and a bright future. Meeting with Secretary Turner was a major step in bringing real solutions home to San Diego. We can and must do better—and with leadership rooted in common sense and compassion, we will.

We also created a rainy day fund to ensure Vista could weather future recessions, without deficits or layoffs.

Cutting taxes and balancing budgets are not mutually exclusive.

When city government stays focused on core services—like public safety—we can maintain balanced budgets while eliminating waste and inefficiency. This approach prioritizes what matters most: allowing families to keep more of the money they work hard to earn.

Our goal is to support small businesses by cutting taxes and reducing red tape—because that’s the proven path to creating prosperity in America. I’m proud that we’ve made Vista a growing economic hub, all while keeping a fiscally responsible approach to local government.

I ordered a pressure washer and it doesn’t work. Amazon won’t refund me.

by Christopher Elliott Q: I ordered a Greenworks Pro Electric Pressure Washer through Amazon recently. The description said it was in new working condition with “minor damage” to the box. I paid $144 for it, which is just slightly less than the new item price. When I opened it, the pressure washer wouldn’t even start.

I called Amazon customer service and a representative told me I had to call Greenworks and get them to certify that it was defective before Amazon would return it. I went through the troubleshooting and confirmed it was broken.

I also gave Greenworks the item’s serial number, and it turns out this one has already been replaced as defective! Greenworks refuses to refund me because it was sold to

someone else, found to be defective, and refunded.

So, I have an item that I paid nearly $150 for that was dead when it arrived to me, a known defective item that was supposed to be in new condition. Amazon sold me a broken product as new.

Amazon won’t escalate my claim, and they hang up on me when I insist my claim be escalated. This can’t be happening. Can you help me get my money back? ~ Halley Thompson, Baltimore A: Amazon should have quickly refunded the nonworking pressure washer. So why didn’t it? Well, it looks like the main problem was that you asked for a refund outside the return window, which is normally 30 days.

product -- you need to make sure it’s working properly within the return window. Otherwise, you could be stuck with a pressure washer that doesn’t work.

I’m not happy with the way Amazon deferred to the manufacturer.

Amazon has an A-to-Z guarantee that covers you if the item you received is damaged, defective, or not as described, and you have requested a return more than 48 hours ago and the seller hasn’t authorized your return request. So yes, technically Amazon should have asked Greenworks to honor a return, but if it didn’t, it should have helped you.

You could have appealed this to a higher level at Amazon. I publish the names, numbers and emails of the top Amazon customer service managers on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org.

Greenworks is not to blame for this.

The company already refunded the customer who previously purchased the unit. The real problem is the previous customer, who re-boxed the broken pressure washer and

Procula), was said to have converted to Christianity after the death of Jesus. Today, she is venerated by the Eastern Orthodox Church as Saint Procla (Hagia Prokla), as well as by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. She was canonized for her bold intervention and courageous attempt to save Jesus from crucifixion. Although Jesus uttered that he (must) die for the sins of the world, Procla nevertheless acted on “sincere, good intentions” as she saw it. Her virtues have been extolled by such notable scholars as Origen of Alexandria who is assessed by most biblical experts thusly: “Widely regarded as one of the most important Christian theologians of all time.”) Note: Origen of Alexandria (184 AD – 253 AD) is not to be confused with Origen the Pagan.

But at the moment, Judean governor, Pilate, is cautiously surveying the man known as Jesus of Nazareth, who stands before him in the flesh. Deeply superstitious, Pilate had already tried without success to send Jesus to Herod, since Jesus was a Galilean and Herod was in Jerusalem at that time. Herod Antipater, nicknamed “Antipas,”

was a 1st century ruler of Galilee and Perea. He is often referred to as both “Herod the Tetrarch” and “King Herod” in the New Testament. (Although the Bible, inaccurately, refers to him as King Herod, he never held the title of king. Nor should he be confused with Herod the Great (King of Judea), who preceded him.)

This was this same Herod Antipater who had previously ordered the death of John the Baptist by decapitation and had longed to see this mystical Jewish teacher, Jesus, in hopes of observing one of his miracles. However, the so-called Messiah says little to Herod’s questions. After being brutalized

by Herod’s soldiers, he is returned to an even more reluctant Pontius Pilate.

Pilate inquires further, carefully, as if treading on dangerous, uncharted waters: “Where is your kingdom?”

Weakened and bloodied, Jesus’ soft reply is impossible to comprehend: “My kingdom is not of this world.”

It was from such supernatural pronouncements that some – even Jesus’ own family – thought him at times to be mentally deranged.

When the Roman governor inquires of Jesus: “Tell me, what is truth?” it was not an idle question. Pilate, in his mortality, and confused fear, truly wished to tap into this (seemingly) other-worldly wisdom.

Who was this man, he wondered.

Whither did he truly come? He seems not of this world.

Sadly, for Pilate, his question “What is truth?” remained unanswered. To his question, Jesus answered with silence.

To Pilate, it made no sense not to reply. To the paradigmatic Jesus, silence was the perfect answer.

Similarly, he had uttered seemingly bizarre statements in the past, such as: “Oh Father, thank you for hiding these things from those who think themselves wise and clever, and instead for revealing them to the childlike.” (Matthew 11:25) One scholar notes that, with Jesus’ encounter with Pontius Pilate, there: “Was a chasm between two modalities of understanding. Pilate represented the mundane world, limited, and rooted. The alleged metaphysical Messiah, Jesus, saw the world as only a passing shimmer, rippling across the surface of Reality. Between these two viewpoints there is an unbounded void which can never be bridged by intellect. It can only be bridged by faith.”

In the final panel of discussion, showcased before a fervent crowd, Pilate avoids an uprising from the assemblage by acquiescing that Jesus be crucified. But, to appease his own inner-turmoil and dark fears, he washes his hands be-

fore the crowd and shouts in fluent Greek: “I am innocent of this man’s blood! You shall bear the responsibility!”

Some years later, after giving the order of death by crucifixion for Jesus, Marcus Pontius Pilate would commit suicide.

There are multiple versions of Pilate’s suicide, however most of these accounts are not from credible sources. Though ultimately uncertain, most historians state that Pilate was exiled by Roman emperor Caligula and “Committed suicide of his own accord, in the year 38 AD in Roman Italy.”

Note: Unlike envisioned in the film “The Passion of the Christ,” Pilate’s dialogue with the historical Jesus was never in the Latin language (nor in Aramaic) but, in Koine Greek, according to the world’s foremost authorities on the Bible.

Koine Greek was the ‘universal language’ of Jesus’ day, permeating wide sectors of the Roman Empire. This wide-spread linguistic influence was inevitable, since the Greeks had conquered Judaea some two centuries prior to Jesus’ reputed birth.

The New Testament Bible was even, originally, first written in Greek.

Shoe wars at 36,000 feet: Should you leave your footwear on?

Imagine settling into your economy class seat on a 13-hour flight, only to find a stranger’s shoes occupying the space beside you.

“It’s a non-issue,” says Jodi RR Smith, an etiquette expert with Mannersmith Etiquette Consulting. “On short flights, you should keep your footwear on for the entire flight.”

That’s what happened to Jaskaran Gautam when he was flying from Tokyo to New York recently. The passenger next to him had switched seats but abandoned his foul-smelling footwear next to him.

For longer flights -- anything over four hours -- it’s OK to take off your shoes, especially if you’re trying to sleep.

“I complained to the flight attendant that the passenger had left his shoes,” says Gautam, who works for a technology company in Kyoto, Japan.

Almost nothing gets passengers more excited than the topic of shoes on a plane. Should you take them off or keep them on? What if you have foot odor? And how do you handle a passenger with smelly feet?

Foot skirmishes are becoming a regular problem on planes. Most of them are low-level, resulting in a complaint to the airline. But sometimes, people go too far when they remove their footwear. Back in 2018, Spirit Airlines diverted a flight from New York to Fort Lauderdale to Myrtle Beach after the odor of smelly feet developed in a

Passengers have been debating whether it’s acceptable to remove shoes on airplanes. Some argue it’s a matter of personal comfort while others cite hygiene and safety concerns. But there’s some agreement on the question of whether

The Pastor Says . . . Going Home Easter, regardless of one’s religious beliefs, seems to be a time of celebration for most. There is the wearing of new clothing, egg hunts, family gatherings, chocolate rabbits, and even the purchase of live rabbits and chickens. Of course, there is the annual visit to a local church.

Lilies are the decor in many homes and churches. Often, there is the sunrise service when many are more than willing to get up early to sit on uncomfortable seats to listen to special music and hear a message about the resurrection of Jesus the Christ. Usually, refreshments, Pastor Huls including hot coffee and hot cross buns, follow the sunrise service. Then, there is the return to home and the resumption of the regular Sunday activities. The day’s message is one of hope and promise for one’s own resurrection from the dead based upon the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. All of this can be a festive experience in itself, even without one of the most important experiences of Jesus, which was His going home back to heaven.

We get some insight into His thinking with His experience with Mary Magdalene, one of His female followers.

Jesus spent some thirty-three years on this earth after his birth, as recorded in the Christmas story. After thirty-three years, it is time for Him to leave this world and all it represents in His experience. This threatened existence started shortly after his birth with Herod the Great. There was constant conflict with the Jewish religious community, which eventually came to a head in His death by crucifixion. Even with His faithful twelve followers, there was the need to remind them that His call was to serve others and not themselves with lofty aspirations for personal glory. In the end, one of His own betrayed him for thirty pieces of silver. Ultimately, the life of Jesus ended in suffering and death by being nailed to a cross, placed between two thieves, each tied on a cross, and then placed with almost total isolation in a borrowed tomb. Now, it is resurrection day with Mary. The record is in the Gospel of John 20:17, “Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father, and to My God, and your God.” Mary wanted to keep Jesus here on earth with her. He wanted to leave and go back home to be with His Father. He had left that domain when He was born. Occasionally, we get glimpses of His relationship with His real home and relationship with His Father. At the age of twelve, He reminded His mother of His purpose. It is not to please her but rather to be about His Father’s business. During his baptism, He is recognized with a voice from heaven that He is God’s Son. In Mark 9:7, God repeats, “This is my beloved Son, listen to Him. “In John 17:1-5, Jesus emphasizes His origin, “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you. For you granted Him authority over all people that He might give eternal life to all those who have given to Him. Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.” Jesus goes on to pray that His disciples will be with Him to see His glory in heaven after He leaves this world. He will go to His home in heaven and create those rooms for his believers.

These passages, and many more, tell us that Jesus will return to His place of origin. He had His time on earth, and now He goes home, but not until His resurrection, which is really the glory of Easter.

If you have a foot odor problem, or think you have a foot odor problem, you’ll want to keep your footwear on at all times or find a way

of neutralizing the smell, for the sake of other passengers.

Susan Sherren, who runs the travel agency Couture Trips, says the recent confrontations are no surprise to her. Airlines just don’t give passengers enough guidance on footwear etiquette.

“These days, people need more specific instructions on how to behave,” she says. “We are guests aboard these flights. With specific rules of engagement spelled out, we all could have more enjoyable and civilized flights.”

Or at least, a better-smelling one.

What To Do With a Passenger Whose Feet Smell Confrontations between passengers who violate the unspoken rules of footwear and those who are having trouble breathing are never, ever easy.

I’ve been stuck sitting next to a passenger whose foot odor was strong enough to summon a hazmat team.

It was an attractive young woman whose shoes smelled like pluff mud on an August afternoon.

“A brief, polite question, such as ‘Can you please move your shoes?’

Or ‘Would you mind putting your shoes back on?,’ might be all you need,” says Clara Burke, who teaches business management communication at Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business “Focus on the outcome you want: getting their shoes back on.”

Only, it wasn’t OK.

But I did what most polite airline passengers did; I quietly endured the trip. But I shouldn’t have, according to etiquette experts.

With the summer travel season just ahead, it wouldn’t surprise me to see more fights over footwear breaking out in midair. I’ll try to remember the advice of the etiquette professionals -- keep my shoes on, especially when I’m using the bathroom. Take them off only if it’s safe (and by safe, I mean it doesn’t affect the cabin air quality).

“I would contact the flight attendant to handle it,” says Rachel Wagner, an etiquette trainer.

What would a flight attendant do?

Your cabin crew has been trained to handle situations like this. They can calmly request that the passenger put the offending footwear back on, putting a cork on the smell, at least until the plane lands.

That usually works, although in Gautam’s case, it did not. You’ll recall that he was on a marathon flight to Japan when his seatmate dropped his shoes next to him and then moved seats. Gautam asked the flight attendant for help, but for some inexplicable reason, the airline employee refused, saying the customer was a “regular” with the airline and that it was OK.

“I avoid flying on the airline now,” he says.

But maybe a solution is up to the airlines. Instead of blanket bans on bare feet, perhaps it’s time to tell us what is -- and isn’t -- allowed when we’re flying. Isn’t that what in-flight announcements are for?

DNs, Tweeners and Us Part 2 of 2

Today’s column addresses the Internet usage patterns and hardware requirements for those of us who were already adults when the IW (Intelligent Web) came along in 2001. The merger of AI (artificial Intelligence) with high speed Internet in late 2001 created the IW and today separates Americans into DIs (Internet users over 40), DNs (Internet users under 31) and Tweeners (Internet users between 31-40). DNs grew up heavily influence by the ever-expanding IW, DIs became adults prior to the existence of the IW and tweeners are a “duke’s mixture” that separates the DIs from the DNs. We DIs were adults when the IW

was born. We used our memory to store knowledge and internal cognitive powers to process it. When we didn’t have the information to solve a problem we sought an external source of information like another person or a written resource.

For DIs, the IW was a convenient source of information. AI generated solutions were reason checked by internal cognitive resources. DNs accept the AI generated solutions without question. Easy access to IW solutions led to “use it or lose it” cognitive declines among DNs, as measured by recent IQ tests.

Whether or not declining IQs are a problem is next week’s topic.

We DIs spend nearly as much time on the IW as do the DNs. The IW is an ever increasing part of our work and leisure living. Years ago we kept up with World news by reading the daily paper and watching the evening news. Now we catch the latest news anytime 7/24 on the IW. We can explore just about any topic from what to feed an aardvark to how to brew zythum (Egyptian malt beer) and never leave our easy chair.

The IW has opened new worlds for retired folks facing fifteen to twenty years of post-retirement living. Never before in human history has it been easier for a retired person to stay active, up to date and relevant. The rocking chair is

a seductive alternative but staying up and connected has its rewards too. The biggest impediment to full enjoyment of the IW is our lack of knowledge concerning its ever growing content. Even folks who spend hours each day on the IW are often surprised by the incredible reach of the IW capabilities. Everything is on the IW. Today over 90% of Americans have smart phone and computer access to the Internet. 50% of homes and offices also have digital assistants (voice assistants). The voice assistant costs than $100 and uses your existing wireless internet. Everyone should have one. It’s like having the world’s smartest person in the room with you.

What Does My Dog Have to be Worried About?

My dog gave me “The Look.” The Look says, “You’re leaving and you’re never coming back, and I don’t know how to open the dog food.”

Do our pets worry, or are we feeling guilty? Here’s what some of my co-workers said.

Matt’s dog gets worried when they’re leaving. They assure her that everything is okay, and they play with her to burn up nervous energy.

Mary’s dog worries when it’s windy. She almost got hit by an

umbrella on a windy day. Mary uses toys, treats, and other distractions so her dog stops focusing on the wind.

As I said, my dog gets worried when we leave. Here’s a way to handle that with your worried dog.

Libby is our head trainer at Rancho Coastal Humane Society. When I asked her if dogs worry, she mentioned Separation Anxiety and Isolation Anxiety.

• Don’t make it a big deal. Just tell your dog you’re leaving.

No big farewell.

• Promise to come back.

• Give your dog a job.

• Dogs can’t tell time, but they know the difference between light and dark.

Separation Anxiety is when a pet is so strongly attached to ONE person that they can’t stand being without them.

With Isolation Anxiety, the pet might not have a favorite person, but it ALWAYS needs to be with SOMEBODY. There’s a fine line between worry and fear, but your pet’s response can be the same for both. A worried or scared dog might get restless, pace, whine, or bark for no apparent reason. A dog might lose appetite or resort to excessive

Cats can worry, but they show it differently. They hiss, scratch someone, or hide when they feel worried or afraid.

Libby says pets love routine. If you say, “I’ll be right back,” then leave for five hours, your pet will be confused. Work your way up if you’re going to be gone longer than a few minutes.

“Passion of the Christ” director, Mel Gibson, concedes to the film’s linguistic inaccuracy, explaining that he was aware that Koine Greek was the language of the region at the time of Jesus, but, there was limited source material for the vernacular used in the film.

However, Jesus mostly spoke Aramaic during his day. And certainly Hebrew since he read from the Jewish Torah. The Jewish Torah (aka the Old Testament) was primarily written in Hebrew during Jesus’ day, with some portions also in Aramaic. But as all scholars note, his everyday language was Aramaic.

As scholars emphasize: “Aramaic was the common spoken language in Judea, Samaria, and Galilee during Jesus’ time, while Hebrew was primarily used in religious contexts and by scholars.”

JESUS WAS MISUNDERSTOOD TO THE END. This ancient Jew whom we call Jesus never ceased to be misunderstood, then and now. Even his last words at the crucifixion would be misunderstood. The dying Jesus issues his final, anguished cry from the cross at Golgotha in his original Aramaic tongue (not in Hebrew as recorded in Matthew 27:46). It is the Gospel of Mark, the oldest of the four gospels, which got it right when he had Jesus’ cry from Golgotha as being in fluent Aramaic, not Hebrew.

Mark, the first of the four Gospels is used as the standard reference for the other three. Mark has Jesus’ anguished cry from the cross in fluent Aramaic: “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani” which translates to: “My God, My God, why hath thou forsaken me?” (Mark 15:34)

Hebrew Torah (the Christian Old Testament), Psalm 22:1 reads: “My God, My God, why has thou forsaken me? Why are thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?”

It is compelling that his cry from the cross was not of being abandoned, but rather a repetition of ancient Scripture and, therefore, a statement of fulfilling prophecy.

In the final analysis, the Christian savior did not make the attainment of blind faith easy, by any measure. His reasoning seems difficult to accept. He voiced that he wished never to ‘purchase’ one’s faith with indelible proof from the eyes and ears. He wished for faith to ‘be earned’ the hard way, by making that most difficult ‘leap of faith,’ without seeing and without the benefit of proof.

As Jesus proclaims: “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” (John 20:29) I often think back on this Nazarene, and upon my favourite Bible verse: “We walk by faith, not by sight.”

Those simple but precious words have sustained me throughout my life.

a time-travel machine. Once perfected, I’d like to go back to when I was about 35 years old (retaining, of course, all of the vast knowledge I have since accumulated over the ages), and about 50 lbs lighter. (I have zero interest in going back to when I was 18 or so).

I would incorporate the ability to be visible or invisible, my option, so that I could, for example, go back to the time of Hitler and, while invisible, hit him in the face with an axe. Goering, too. And Eichmann. I would go back to the time of Ghengis Khan and ask that he try to be a little nicer and more considerate of his fellow man.

I would also go back and visit some of my old girl friends. Never really had a bad relationship with a woman . . . we always parted best of friends. Some, however, I never got to tell how much they meant to me and how it was important to me that they were part of my life.

I would like to do that. Might not mean a whole lot to them. It would to me.

I probably should have encouraged them more. Who knows what they might have accomplished?

I would go back and listen in on all of the war planning activities . . . on the plans for the Normandy Invasion . . . on the discussions when Harry Truman decided to drop the A-Bomb.

So many things I would like to do . . . if only I could hurry up and finish this here invention.

I know! I’ll buy a couple bottles of wine and a case of beer and we can all get together this weekend and work on the invention together!

And, yes, I’ll give each one of you a ride in our time machine.
