By Friedrich Gomez We’re only in the 3rd month of the 2025 New Year and already an unprecedented and ugly reality has set in.

In 2025 the suicide rate among seniors, veterans, and youth, have all reached suicide levels not seen since 1941.

This revelation so early in 2025 and with nine months in our 2025 calendar still to come, has shocked even experienced social scientists

into disbelief and leading them to recheck their sources.

This dramatic “suicide spike” across the United States hasn’t been seen in 84 years (during the Second World War), and its upward surge is continuing and is akin to a growing, unstoppable human tsunami of selfinflected death.

What is it about our current world that is making rational everyday Americans, in record numbers, preferring to choose death over life?

dive” into how different age groups, and different social and ethnic demographics, all share one thing in common: disillusionment and personal psychic pain in a Brave New World which is making them -- in ever increasing numbers – to yearn, desire and, finally, to embrace death over life, itself.

ALTHOUGH SUICIDES ARE NOTHING NEW – THIS IS A STRANGE NEW PHENOMENA UNLIKE ANYTHING WE’VE WITNESSED IN THIS GENERATION. And although suicide is nothing

new in America -- this spike boggles the human imagination in its sheer scope and magnitude, rendering even hardened research scientists thunderstruck, speechless, and scrambling to make sense of it all.

In our 2025 Zeitgeist, suicide, or self-inflicted mortality, is now reaching the very young, middle aged, senior citizens, military veterans, male and female – all collectively – in early record numbers.

The following official tale of the tape is an obscene reality:

There are complex social issues and other contributing factors which may lead a person to commit suicide. Different people may have different reasons for committing suicide.

Reasons include: Older adults plan more carefully and use more deadly methods.

SENIORS ARE NOW THE HIGHEST SUICIDE DEMOGRAPHIC IN ALL AMERICA!

In addition to all of the above, seniors are least likely to ask for help, intervention, or to share their worries, woes, and depression with loved ones for fear of being a family burden.

While teenagers are the age group most associated with suicide risk, the terrible truth is that another group is killing themselves at even higher rates: lonely and family-neglected seniors.

It comes as a shock for many to learn that seniors now commit suicide twice as often as teens.

And according to national news outlets, such as U.S. News & World Report: “U.S. Suicide Rate Climbs Back to Highest in Decades.” (https://www.usnews. com>News>HealthNews)

Suicide is higher in older adults for a number of reasons. These range from depression, to grief over the passing of loved ones, to chronic illness which comes with age and complications.

Before we proceed, it is paramount for the reader to recognise that suicide is a complex phenomenon.

Suicide attempts by older adults are much more likely to result in death than among younger persons.

Just as the feature was about to start, a blonde from the center of the row got up and started working her way out.

By the time she got to me, I was trying to look around her and I was a little impatient, so I said, “Couldn’t you have done this a little earlier?”

Older adults are less likely to be discovered and rescued.

Our senior citizen population is often marginalised. Often neglected and left alone to live, sometimes in a retirement dwelling or left to live alone in their own home – the home in which they reared their beloved children.

When people become hopeless about their mounting financial situation, and not believing that a better future is even possible, they can become particularly vulnerable to thoughts of suicide, and that suicide risk can increase over time.

roof working on AC equipment. I stumbled over my tools and toppled off the building. I managed to grab onto the balcony rail of a 9th floor apartment, but some idiot came rushing out and bashed my hands with a flower pot. I fell, but landed on an awning and survived.

But, as I looked up, I saw a huge chest falling toward me. I was hit and killed by the chest.”

“I came home early and found my wife naked in bed.

She claimed she had just gotten out of the shower.

Well, her hair was dry and the shower was completely dry too.

I knew she was into some hankypanky and I began to look for her lover.

I went onto the balcony of our 9th floor apartment and found the SOB clinging to the rail by his fingertips.

The clerk couldn’t help but chuckle as he directs the man to the waiting room. He is still giggling when his third customer of the day enters.

The clerk apologizes and says “I doubt that your last day was as interesting as the two fellows that arrived here just before you.”

I was angry and bashed his fingers with a flower pot.

“I don’t know” replies the man.

“Picture this, I’m buck naked hiding in this cedar chest and.......”

He let go and fell, but his fall was broken by an awning.

Seeing him still alive, I found super human strength to drag our antique cedar chest to the balcony and throw it over.

It hit the man and killed him.

At this point the stress got to me and I suffered a massive heart attack and died.”

The clerk thanked him and sent him on to the waiting room.

The second applicant said that his last day was his worst.

“I was on an apartment building

One day a florist went to a barber for a haircut. After the cut, he asked about his bill, and the barber replied, ‘I cannot accept money from you, I’m doing community service this week.’

The florist was pleased and left the shop.

Seniors who are terrified over losing their monthly Social Security cheques – their sole financial income on which to live and budget on – can place them under a huge emotional and mental roller coaster of uncertainty which can take an indelible emotional and psychological toll.

Today, in 2025, many U.S. senior citizens are too ashamed to ask their children or grandchildren for financial support. That is one reason why they’re marginalised, in a rest home, or their own home – bought and paid for – in which they proudly reared their family.

Adding to this mix of anxiety and fear of being poverty-struck and reflecting on being relegated to homeless status, or not having enough food to eat on a limited income, or mounting pressure of ever-increasing medical expenses and doctor visits can be overwhelming in their aged years when their mind is not as sharp and their bodies are far more frail – and if all that were not enough, the relentless and intimidating letters and phone calls they receive from creditors – all seem too much for one feeble senior or senior couple in their autumn years.

Such intimating thoughts are thrice as bad for the aged who are a most vulnerable segment of our society.

So they often suffer in silence.

And if they’ve outlived their spouse, they suffer in solitude which further causes grief and the will to carry on.

Any sudden financial problem can rapidly increase a senior’s risk of suicide, or act as a “trigger” for a suicide attempt, particularly when someone is already struggling with other long term health issues.

Some elderly are especially vulnerable to feelings of inadequacy, intimidation by creditors, loss of self-esteem and self-worth – all can greatly increase the risk of premeditated senior suicides.

As one elderly man sadly stated: “I was a complete failure to my children, I believed, because my benefits had been delayed and sanctioned due to me (not turning) up to my appointments . . . I attempted suicide numerous times.”

DATELINE: FERNDALE, WA. A 77-year-olde Washington man and his 76-year-olde wife were found dead in a “likely murder-suicide,” as notes were left on the scene

about concerns over their high medical bills, according to police.

“It is very tragic that one of our senior citizens would find himself in such desperate circumstances where he felt murder and suicide were the only option. Help is always available with a call to 911,” so stated Whatcom County Sheriff Bill Elfo at the scene.

On that fateful Wednesday morning, the elderly man had called 911 and told the dispatcher, “I’m going to shoot myself,” prompting deputies to respond to the home near Ferndale, Washington, the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post.

The man indicated that he had prepared a note for the sheriff with information and instructions, according to the sheriff’s office. The dispatcher then unsuccessfully attempted to keep the caller on the line.

The man disconnected the call after saying, “We will be in the front bedroom,” according to authorities.

Deputies arrived and set up a perimeter around the house.

For about an hour, a crisis negotiator attempted to contact the occupants of the home by phone and a megaphone. An hour later, deputies deployed a robot-mounted camera.

The man was found deceased from an apparent gunshot wound, authorities said. He was lying next to his wife, who also died from an apparent gunshot wound.

Sheriff’s office detectives and crime scene investigators are looking into the case as a likely murder-suicide.

“Several notes were left citing severe ongoing medical problems with the wife and expressing concerns that the couple did not have sufficient resources to pay for medical care,” the sheriff’s office reported.

Two dogs that were found within the residence were taken into custody and turned over to the humane society for care. Numerous firearms were also impounded for safekeeping.

The identities of the couple have not yet been released, as officials are notifying next of kin.

Major Drug Arrests in North San Diego County As a result of a combined effort of several law enforcement agencies The U.S. Dept. of Justice was able to announce that 16 people, including nine Escondido residents have been arrested for allegedly trafficking in fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine and Adderall.

The arrests came after a 16-month investigation said the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of California.

This coordinated takedown involved more than 150 federal, state and local law enforcement officials arrested all 16 defendants and executed 16 search warrants in Escondido, San Diego, Orange County, and Roanoke, Virginia.

The Escondido defendants are: Hector Armando Espinoza, 29 Demetrius Collins, AKA “Demo”, 34 Rigoberto Agraz, AKA “Rigo”, 31 Detavius Jones Corteze, AKA “Tay Tay”, 21 Alexis Amezquita, 26 Tracie Shean, 51 Evelyn Janet Caballero, 31 Carlos Vargas, 29 Celia Veronica Espinoza, 46 Total seizures during the total investigation involved more than 2 kg of fentanyl; more than 53 kg (over 116 pounds) of methamphetamine; substantial quantities of cocaine and Adderall; nine firearms; body armor; large capacity magazines; and ammunition.

Indictments were for drug trafficking, conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, and conspiracy to commit money laundering offenses.

Escondido Police Lieutenant Ryan Hicks stated, “The Escondido Police Department works aggressively to identify and hold accountable anyone who chooses to participate in the poisoning of our community through illicit fentanyl distribution. We can successfully conduct these investigations through crucial support from the U.S. Attorney’s Office and our other federal partnerships.”

methamphetamine and 1,500 fentanyl pills for $10,500. Collins directed the agent to send the money to Alexis Amezquita’s address. Several days later, Collins retrieved the money from Amezquita’s mailbox. Collins then mailed a package to the undercover agent that contained approximately four pounds of methamphetamine and a half pound of fentanyl pills that were provided by Espinoza.”

“The San Diego Sheriff’s Office has dedicated personnel and resources to the Fentanyl Abatement Suppression Team (FAST) since it began,” said San Diego County Sheriff Kelly Martinez. “We value the collaboration with our federal, state and local partners to combat the fentanyl crisis in San Diego.

These enforcement efforts increase the safety of our communities and save lives.”

In February 2024, Collins agreed to sell the undercover agent five pounds of methamphetamine and 5,000 fentanyl pills for $20,000.

Collins again retrieved the money from Amezquita’s mailbox and shipped the drugs, that were provided by Espinoza. The package was found to contain approximately 5.68 pounds of methamphetamine and 1.21 pounds of fentanyl pills.

The investigation involved many undercover operations and courtauthorized wiretaps, agents conducted a number of controlled purchases and traffic stops of personal vehicles.

These wiretap intercepts showed that defendants Hector Armando Espinoza and Demetrius Collins, AKA “Demo” held leadership roles in the organization and coordinated the distribution of kilogram quantities of methamphetamine and fentanyl.

According to the U.S. Attorney, “In January 2024, an undercover agent conversed with Collins about purchasing methamphetamine and fentanyl, according to the search warrants. Collins agreed to sell the undercover agent four pounds of

Espinoza then began to rely heavily on others to distribute drugs on his behalf. During numerous wiretap intercepts, agents heard Espinoza set up drug sales with customers and then direct others such as Detavius Jones Corteze, AKA “Tay Tay,” Tracie Shean, and Collins to meet with the customers and distribute them on his behalf.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Sean Van Demark and Sarah Akhtar and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Sterling Winchester. Special agents and task force officers with the Fentanyl Abatement and Suppression Team (FAST) led this investigation.

This was in keeping with a pledge he had made . . at the request of his mom. “Larry,” she said, “I want you to promise me you’ll never work in a sawmill . . .or in the lumber industry.”

It was a long, sometimes trying road.

That area is lumber country. Lots of lumber mills . . saw mills, logging trucks with awesome loads . . .Larry’s dad, in fact, was killed in a sawmill accident . . which left Larry’s mother alone, with six kids to feed and care for . . as well as squeezing in some time to grieve for her late husband.

My dear Lyle, I am literally in tears as I type these words. We just read this week’s cover story “Lady Liberty And The Early Immigrants” in The Paper (3/20/25 issue) written by your boy Friedrich Gomez and there wasn’t a dry eye among us, not one! Our great grandparents who were of Scots-Irish extraction passed through Ellis Island.

Last weekend our family spotted Friedrich at the Beach Break Cafe here in Oceanside where he introduced us to his girlfriend Kimberly.

Lyle, you described Friedrich perfectly in a past “Man About Town” column when you said he is very animated and often dances when walking and sometimes waving his arms all around! Lyle, he is so innocent and 100% adorable. Continue to be protective of him, Lyle, because he is such a beautiful free spirit! His beautiful girlfriend had us laughing and in good spirits and never took her arms off Friedrich.

She kept referring to you Lyle as “My Viking King.” We love you Lyle and so proud that The Paper is owned and operated by you, a true American, and a genuine U.S. Military Veteran! God bless you for your service!

EVEN “SUICIDAL THOUGHTS” HAVE RISEN AMONG CHURCH LEADERS, PASTORS & MINISTERS IN AMERICA. Suicidal thoughts are serious precursors for any suicide. Therefore, suicidal thoughts are to be taken seriously if there is to be any hope of intervention and salvaging a life via suicide prevention.

Because prevention is the best method, we shall discuss the shocking rise of suicidal thoughts and “suicidal ideation” among the U.S. clergy today.

Millions of Americans (seriously) think of committing suicide every single minute of every day, somewhere around the United States.

It is also important to know that for every person who takes their own life, there are many more who make an attempt to take their own lives but somehow survived the ordeal.

World Suicide Prevention Day and Suicide Prevention Month serve as crucial reminders of the importance of mental health awareness and support for all individuals, including those in leadership positions within our Christian communities.

Among these leaders, pastors hold a unique and often challenging role, bearing the weight of their congregation’s spiritual and emotional needs.

Within the network of Christian churches is a most worthy nonprofit organisation called Barna Group, which has conducted more than two million interviews over the course of thousands of studies, and has become the “go-to” source and spiritual support for countless churches, Christian denominations, pastors, ministers, and preachers of every stripe.

During his tours of duty he was assigned tours in Japan, Vietnam, the Phillipines, Hawaii, Pensacola, Florida, back to Japan, then Okinawa. He really saw the world!

While in Japan he met a lovely Japanese girl named Kim. They were together whenever possible and ultimately married during his tour of duty in Okinawa.

Larry and Kim would be together for 61 years before he lost Kim to a long term illness just last year.

Kim had been seriously ill for some time and Larry, ever the attentive and loyal husband, saw to it that she had only the best of care and caregivers.

In 1963, after being honorably discharged from the Marines, Larry came to San Diego, largely because one of his pals was from here. He bought Indian merchandise and started selling it out of the back of a station wagon; soon, demand was so great, he had to open a store. Demand continued and Larry gathered more and more merchandise.

His first store in Escondido was near Hwy 15 and West Valley Park-

he could provide her with so much personal care and still run his business in Vista. He had outstanding caregivers, nursing homes, and rehab centers; in her final months Hospice came on scene and was a wonderful help right up to the time of her passing.

The Aztecs became too weak to fight.

LEADING TO SUICIDAL THOUGHTS AMONG PASTORS: THERE ARE MULTIPLE, COMPLEX REASONS. There are several factors and dynamics which come into play regarding pastoral depression, spiritual fatigue, and disillusionment, which all parlay into deeply personal and private depression and thoughts of self-harm among the clergy today.

1. 70% of pastors (continually) battle depression. A huge jump from previous years of 46% 2. 80% of pastors and 85% of their spouses feel discouraged in their roles.

3. 50% of pastors’ marriages now end in divorce, with over 51% among Evangelical Protestants.

Unseen and greatly unknown to the general public, church leaders often live in a mercurial spiritual career which many Christian church-goers are totally unaware.

4. 90% work between 55 to 75 hours per week.

THE VAGARIES OF PASTORAL DUTIES & THE CHURCH.

6. 75% of pastors report being “extremely stressed” or “highly stressed.”

According to Christian sources, current Christian research now show that 1,500 pastors leave the ministry (each month) in America.

That 4,000 new churches start each year in America. And 7,000 churches close each year in America.

50% or one-half of pastors’ marriages end in divorce, which is comparable to the general public at large. This is a ‘double jump’ from previous studies of only 20% to 25% pastoral divorce rates.

This may well factor into the divorce rate among pastors to be roughly equivalent to the overall general population of non-Christians.

Adding to pastoral depression, spiritual conflicts, and questioning pastoral self- esteem is that over 50% of pastors admit to some level of viewing pornography. This, in turn, may result in serious negative introspection, spiritual disillusionment, ministerial depression, inner morality conflict, questioning selfintegrity, and suicidal ideation.

(NOTE: Christian studies/surveys reveal 75% of practising Christian men and 50% of active Christian women report secretly viewing pornography on some level. While only a third of pastors (33%) openly consider pornography to be a major or significant problem in their congregations, that number nearly doubles (62%) among pastors with larger congregations.

Overall, practising Christians who devoutly attend church services view pornography at approximately the same level as non-Christians.

In 2021, an investigative research found that 30,177 active duty personnel and veterans who served in the military after 9/11 have died by suicide - compared to the 7,057 service members killed in combat in those same 20 years.

All of which adds angst and depression to pastors and ministers that they, themselves, are ‘caught up’ in what the Church views as abhorrent behaviour; once again leaving some pastors to question their own spiritual integrity, ergo, leading them to (seriously) contemplate suicide.

The added dynamic which pushes ministers and pastors to the “edge” is that 37% confess on anonymous

The Short-lived Great Carrier Airships Of The 1930s

large rigid-framed airships Akron and Macon because of its small size though its weight, handling and range characteristics, and also downward visibility from the cockpit, were not ideal for its reconnaissance role. The theoretical maximum capacity of the airships’ hangar was five aircraft, one in each hangar bay and one stored on the trapeze but, in the Akron, two structural girders obstructed the aft two hangar bays, limiting her to a maximum complement of three Sparrowhawks. The Macon routinely carried four airplanes.

In the 1930s, before sea-going aircraft carriers became the present dominant weapons platform of the U.S. Navy, giant dirigible (Lighter-Than-Air) ships, also known as “Zeppelins,” operated on both coasts throughout the American Fleet. The rigid vessels served as mother ships for up to four small fighter/scout planes which were launched and harbored aboard the great helium-filled airships.

The Curtiss F9C Sparrowhawk was a light 1930s biplane fighter aircraft that was carried and launched by primarily the Navy dirigibles, primarily the USS Akron and the USS Macon.

The Sparrowhawk was known as a “parasite” fighter, a small airplane designed to be deployed from aircraft such as a dirigible or bomber.

The concept of fixed-wing aircraft being carried and launched from dirigible airships was initially developed during World War I. by the British to allow single-engine interceptors to engage German LTA Zeppelins. The increasing use of airships by nations led to variations on the idea of using aircraft with them. This was before the advent of Radar. The major uses being for reconnaissance, extending the reach of the airship beyond the

In the late 1920s, the U.S. Navy began experimenting with its airships, initially using the German-built USS Los Angeles as a platform for testing the concept of the so-called “parasite” aircraft. The success of these tests led to the decision to build two new airships (Akron and Macon), which were capable of ac-

commodating an on-board air group of specially designed aircraft. This was ultimately developed into the Curtiss Sparrowhawk.

Although designed as a pursuit plane or fighter, the Sparrowhawk’s primary duty was reconnaissance, enabling the airships it served to search a much wider area of ocean.

The Pastor Says . . . Changing Times Every year, we go through the process of changing our clocks at least twice. I hear more complaints about this than anything else. A few States have rebelled and refused the time change. We have been told that even Congress plays with the idea of permanently making the change. Daylight savings was implemented in 1918 during World War I to help conserve fuel and power and extend the workday. It also benefited the farmers by giving them more daylight for their work. It wasn’t for a longer or shorter day. The amount of time was the same.

Even adding another day or more hours to our clocks wouldn’t give us more time. It is within this known time that we have the changes. In fact, we are living in that kind of world today. It is a world of change. God, the Creator, gives us the time. Man makes the changes. The time change is an example.

We have many changes today, with people changing their minds. We saw much of this politically. The experts projected results that did not happen because people changed their votes. We can be thankful for that because it tells us that just about everything is subject to change. Sometimes, it is because a stronger voice confronts us, and rather than having problems, we can change.

The ability to change is one of God’s gifts to us. It often does not come easily, but when we consider the alternatives, we can decide to think and act differently. We would still live in the stone age if we didn’t change.

I visited a church recently and saw nothing but change. The music performance was on a guitar and drum rather than on a traditional pipe organ. Instead of the traditional clothing of suits and classical female hats, many in the audience wore shorts and slip-on tennis shoes. There was little that had to do with silence and meditation.

The noise level with conversations was difficult to overcome. When the time came to collect an offering, nobody passed the traditional basket or collection plate. The offering was taken with a credit card. It was not the traditional male clergy but a woman conducting the service. The music was very contemporary and difficult to follow without a hymn book. The Bible was not a traditional text but a very modern one. I was pleased that there seemed to be the same God that I knew, but my relationship with Him is not based on His act of grace but rather on the discipline of my effort. All of this reminded me of how change has occurred in both our secular society and the religious community.

Is change good? I believe it is. When we are on a path of stagnation, self-indulgence, prejudice, ignorance, deceit, and all the evils of humankind, it is not only pleasing to change but necessary. Change follows the ways of God, who changes when people desire to change. God changes when His creatures seek Him and His love.

He forgives, blesses, inspires, and offers a life of fulfillment. No life is so unchangeable or set that it cannot be changed in belief or action if one sincerely desires it. The serenity prayer gives us this courage “to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

In the last two columns we discussed the 2001 introduction of the IW (Intelligent Web) and its impact on us. The IW combines AI (Artificial Intelligence) with high speed access to mankind’s Internet knowledge base. The constantly evolving and improving IW is less than twenty five years old, but it already dwarfs the knowledge base and cognitive power of any human. For the first time in Earth’s history there is an intelligence that rivals or exceeds our own. We invented machines that outmatched our strength and endurance and now we have invented technologies that exceed our knowledge and intelligence.

The origin of this “generations gap” created by the IW is understandable but its long term impli-

cations are far reaching, complex and subject to speculation. The older generation of DIs (Digital Immigrants) invented the IW and even today remain the main force behind its continued development.

The younger generations DNs (Digital Natives) grew up using the IW with smart phones, PCs, digital assistants, tablets and an ever increasing bevy of connection devices. AI has become ever more adept at processing the Internets expanding data base improving its ability to provide solutions.

came to IW as adults with well developed internal cognitive resources. To DIs the IW is a marvelous external source of information to be processed by our internal cognizance. By contrast DNs (30 and under) have lived with the IW their entire lives and spent half their waking hours attached to it. The gigantic data base and AI of the IW provides information, answers and solutions with the minimal use of internal cognitive resources. As a result DNs have a reduced need to develop these internal assets.

Finding answers and solutions by traditional methods involved processing data with man’s internal cognitive recourses. These resources are learned through formal education and life experience. This process continues to grow our cognition throughout our lifetimes. Today, anyone with access to the AI abetted IW, can find answers and solutions without use of internal cognitive resources. A solution offered by the IW is likely to be equal to or superior to one derived from any individual’s internal cognitive resources. If one can get a reliable solution to a problem or question quickly and efficiently from the IW, it simply doesn’t make sense to waste time and energy using internal resources to arrive at a possibly less reliable solution.

In the last two decades IQ tests have noted a modest decline in cognition among DNs. It appears that DNs are incorporating the assets of the IW as a component of their internal cognition. With a data base that dwarfs the storage capacity of the human mind and a

So where does this leave us? We DIs will continue to marvel at, revel in and enjoy the benefits of technological advances until we eventually die out later in this century. DNs will gradually replace us and continue the development of devices that provide access to knowledge and intelligence that substantially exceed the limits of their own physical and mental resources. They won’t need doctors, lawyers, teachers or any professions that require years of training.

The only employment available will be for bartenders and hookers and I’m not sure we’ll really need bartenders. Ah, Brave New World

She’s still one of my all-time favorite students. Now she’s married, has children, and has traveled all over the world as the wife of a Marine.

Screaming in terror and confusion, his wife and two little children ran into the adjacent dining room area, where their two tiny daughters, Jasmine and Keola, were quickly hiding and trembling in stark terror!

The loud screams and anguished cries of his own children and wife were heard briefly on a frantic phone call that was immediately cut short.

Suddenly, as quickly as it all began, the violent and deadly attack ended.

Inexplicably, Anthony – somehow – snapped out of it!

Standing, shaking, with long knife still in his hands . . . his fingers slowly relaxed and the deadly kitchen knife slipped and fell to the floor.

No one was hurt.

Only terrified out of their wits. it passed the hangar door. Although seemingly a tricky maneuver, pilots soon learned the technique and it was described as being much easier than landing on a moving, pitching and rolling aircraft carrier. Once the system was fully developed, in order to increase their scouting endurance while the airship was on over-water operations, the Sparrowhawks would have their landing gear removed and replaced by a fuel tank. When the airship was returning to base, the biplanes’ landing gear would be replaced so that they could land independently again.

For much of their service with the airships, the Sparrowhawks’ effectiveness was greatly hampered by their poor radio equipment, and they were effectively limited to remaining within sight of the airship.

Himself now frightened and not understanding what just happened – he suddenly did not trust himself any longer.

He loved his wife – his lifelong love – too much.

And his own small little girls were what kept him alive in the Middle East.

Not trusting himself, Anthony checked into a hotel.

On Saturday, 10 August 2021, he sat down in his hotel room with pen and paper and wrote out his thoughts on four separate pieces of paper.

It was there, alone in his hotel room, that Anthony Morris, U.S. military veteran, killed himself.

When his lifeless body was discovered, there close to him, were 4 suicide notes. One to his mother, his wife, and one each to his two little girls.

And as with Sgt. Anthony Morris’ flashbacks, many military members today suffer from PTSD and they no longer trust themselves around family members and physically remove themselves to another location – sometimes to a hotel, or other place – where they can do no harm to loved ones.

In an ideal situation, they and/or family members should reach out for suicide medical intervention, immediately (details at story’s end). the belly fuel tanks and allowing the more vulnerable mother ship to stay clear of trouble.

The Navy’s airship service lasted from the late twenties until the 1960s.

While the use of the large dirigibles was short-lived, the smaller, three and four-passenger crew “blimps,” which did not have a rigid airframe like the dirigibles, successfully served as coastal patrol aircraft during World War II, sinking large numbers of German U-boats (submarines) while protecting Allied critical shipping on the Atlantic.

The three large Navy dirigibles airplane carriers, the USS Los Angeles, the USS Akron, and the USS Macon, each met their demise due to bad weather and/or obsolescence. Greatly improved radio communications and the advent of Radar made use of the huge airships a brief footnote in history.

Sadly, in their last precious moments of life, deep down inside . . . they do not wish to die and leave their family and loved ones behind.

As often recorded in their suicide notes, or final phone calls, in their last precious moments of life – they wistfully and fleetingly wish to live and not die.

And they regret what is about to happen.

In their last seconds of life, they often show regret in their facial expression – the instant before they die.

Slow Travel Why is everyone losing it with the laggards?

You’re boarding a flight and the guy in front of you is slow. Almost deliberately slow.

He’s in no hurry to lift his luggage into the overhead bin. Then unpacks a laptop computer, a book, a headset and reorganizes his bag before sitting down -- slowly. Meanwhile, other passengers are lining up behind him impatiently.

That’s what happened to David Kazarian on a recent flight from Tampa to New York. And get this: Before the passenger could get comfortable, he remembered that he had forgotten something and stood up to retrieve his phone.

“I just kept my mouth shut,” says Kazarian, a retired pharmacist from Tampa. “But as the line in the jetway grew, a cabin attendant got on the microphone and asked people to please step out of the aisle when they found their seat.”

But he was fuming along with everyone else in line: “Slow travelers are one of my pet peeves.”

Why You’re Seeing More Slow Travelers It feels like slow travelers are everywhere these days. They take their time boarding and adjusting the items in the overhead bin while a long line is waiting behind them. They block the escalators and walkways with their luggage, or by standing next to each other.

They chat it up with the Starbucks barista at the airport when people behind them have a plane to catch.

In other words, they act like they’re on vacation. How dare they?

Why are these travel laggards suddenly coming into focus? How do you avoid getting stuck behind a slowpoke? And how do you deal with a slow traveler who may be blocking your way, or worse?

Mahmood Khan, a professor of hospitality and tourism at Virginia Tech, says he’s seen a significant uptick in the number of laggards.

With more people traveling, and more cancellations, he’s seen an increasing number of passengers wandering around the airport and train terminals.

“It’s especially been more noticeable since the pandemic,” he says.

Rising travel volume, an influx of inexperienced travelers, and a shift in cultural attitudes toward speed and efficiency are fueling this trend.

Illustration by Dustin Elliott “Crowded airports and the surge in travelers post-pandemic have created a pressure cooker environment,” explains Carla Bevins, who teaches business management at Carnegie Mellon University. “Many of us are rushing to catch flights, juggle tight schedules, and make it through security lines quickly.”

So when someone slows things down, like taking a while to store their bag in the overhead bin, it can feel like an enormous inconvenience.

How To Avoid Slow Travelers Believe it or not, there are ways to avoid a potential confrontation with a slow traveler.

First, avoid peak times, whether you’re flying somewhere or visiting a popular attraction.

“Long lines are part of the experience,” warns Charlie Neville, a marketing director at Jayway Travel. “I recommend planning your visit during off-peak hours or opting for skip-the-line tickets when available.” You can easily find out the slow periods through an online search. If you plan your visit around them, the slowpokes won’t bother you as much.

Also, go out of your way to avoid lines. That’s what Gabriella Ribeiro, a travel advisor from Wayne, N.J., does whenever she travels.

“I have a routine,” she explains.

“I buy protein shakes faithfully before I embark a flight at Newark so I go wherever I can find a self-checkout. I go to the first-class lounge to avoid the crowds where pretty much everything is self-ser-

vice. I walk stairs if they’re there instead of managing an escalator or waiting for an elevator.”

There are workarounds for every place you’re likely to find sluggish travelers. The chatty customer at the coffee shop? Use the app to order your latte and pick it up. The slow guy boarding your flight? Board early if you can or wait until the last minute to get on the plane (after all, you’re all going to the same place).

And the group of travelers clogging the moving walkway? Don’t use it. You’ll be grateful for the exercise when you have to spend the next 10 hours sitting on a plane.

What To Avoid When You See A Slow Traveler When you see someone slow, it’s easy to make a mistake, say experts. Here are the most common ones that you can avoid.

Pushing them aside. That’s always a bad idea, says Silvia Lupone, a travel advisor. “It more often than not causes a further delay because people feel stressed or nervous.”

Plus, it’s rude.

Shouting at them. Screaming “outta my way” can be counterproductive. “It’s important to stay calm and remember that frustration won’t change their behavior,” says travel advisor Nicole Cueto.

Instead, a polite but firm, “Excuse me, I need to get by,” can often resolve the issue.

Telling them to hurry up. There’s usually a reason someone is moving slowly, and believe me, it’s probably not what you think. “Trying to rush or express annoyance

rarely helps, and it can make the delay feel even worse. Besides, travel isn’t always about speed; it’s about the journey, quirks and all,” says travel expert Paul Fournier.

Confessions Of A Slow Traveler I’ve been part of the problem. A few years ago, I broke my pelvis and three ribs in a serious ski accident. Even after I graduated from my crutches, I still moved like an old man.

I can confirm that I was not the guy in front of Kazarian, the retired pharmacist, but it could have been someone like me -- moving slowly and deliberately because of a hidden disability.

Eventually, I healed and my pace gradually quickened. But I’ll never forget the kindness of strangers who asked if I needed help with my luggage. Or, when I turned to them to apologize for taking so long, assured me not to worry.

We live in a time when that kindness has been replaced by a mefirst attitude. We may have lost the last shreds of politeness and decency in the previous election, and I fear that slower travelers will be the casualties. It’s up to us all to ensure that doesn’t happen.
