As a design student I have learned many things while studying. The most important thing I’ve taken away is that change is constant but quality remains quality. I pride myself in achieving results that reflect the occasion and given scenarios and as such function more efficiently in fast paced environments with constant feedback. Creatively I am interested in the visual communication of architectural projects. I find that selling an experience of a project, or even a workplace, is the key driver to success.

DEMOCRACY THE REALITY OF MEDIATION

The framework for democracy in Australia is firmly set in place to for a successful governmental body. The issues surrounding the idea of democracy is the lack of education within the wider community. This in turn affects the means of communication the public which has primarily been done through the media. In effect, the media has become the mediator between governmental and public domains. This mediator relationship has then been used to inform the public on how the governmental body has been running and how to vote accordingly.

Negativity surrounds the ideal of Democracy in Australia because these are the messages that we as the public are getting from the media. For democracy to become a successful and further well used endeavour within Australia we as the public need to educate ourselves. This needs to start at a young age to remove the idea of negativity. The Keystone Project should form the connection between the younger generations and the idea of policy. The aim of the project is to generate a conversation in the wider Brisbane regions to educate the masses.

What is the solution? For a democratic system to function a constant dedication is required from both parties; Public and Govenment. This relationship enforces the importance and the equality of decisions being made and turned into policies. As the public of a democracy you are required to educate yourself, which then inturn can create positive desicions and outcomes.

How do we tackle this? There are many ways in which to resolve this issue. The aim of this project is to create a building which can service the greater brisbane region in education. Targeting the younger population will generate a wider discussion and possibly questions as to why we do what we do. So what do we want to achieve? • Eliminating the media as the mediator • Introduce school programs to educate wider region of Brisbane • Form a relationship with Government • Create a visually stimulating building which services the public

Building Requirements The primary goal of this brief was to create a building which could be a standalone beacon of democracy; a transparent architecture. This is problematic as transparency and democracy rarely agree; thus the primary goal of this building is to create a knowledge hub which allows democracy to become transparent through education. The site is located in Brisbane CBD and is bordered by Margaret, Alice, George and William Street. The building itself should form strong connections with Parliament House, 1 William Street and the botanical gardens as these are major landmarks surrounding the site. The building should facilitate uses to the surrounding workplaces and should include cafes, auditoriums and IT zones. The Hall should also create a connection to wider Brisbane CBD through an information centre and meeting rooms/conference rooms. It should also create facilities which entices school programs to learn about democracy.

STIMULATING

VISUAL AND INTELECTUAL

As part of the experience, the Hall of Democracy should be visually and intellectually stimulating. In this design it is done through creating an optical experience that stimulats the individual. This has contributed towards the outwards appeal of the building through designing fecades and creating movement in the building. Stimulating someone visually allows for an experience that could possibly be repeated. An interesting or exciting experience is

more likely to relate to a positive outcome. Creating an experiene that is stimulating may generate a conversation which can infuence the wider brisbane region. The educational learning experience should be part of a reward system which encourages school programs to learn about democracy. Spreading this knowlege throughtout the brisbane region can educate people and possibly make the ideal of Democracy more transparent. Education is key.
