The Nubian Times is a Manchester based daily online publication with a combined readership of over 175,000 and growing. TNT News is your source for diverse news.

Hello guys, I hope that all who went to Manchester Pride, London and Leeds carnivals had an entertaining weekend. For the rest of you lot, let’s hope you entertained yourselves (and the kids – for the parents and guardians out there). Congratulations to all students who achieved the exam results they needed, whether in GCSE, NVQ’s, Foundation courses or A-Level. For those who are disappointed with their result remember this: ‘Nothing is impossible, the word itself says “I’m possible”’ – Audrey Hepburn. Congratulations to everybody from ‘The Nubian Times’; those who sat their exams and we know no matter what, you all will achieve great things. Well, who watched the big fight? Apparently talk is cheap and so is being a sore loser. I know there are going to be a lot of people who will say that’s not nice, but to you guys I will say it’s nice to be nice. The racial slurs that came out of Connor McGregor’s mouth to Floyd Mayweather were shocking and offensive. He got defeated so that’s that! What I will say in his defence, although he doesn’t really deserve it is that, he put up a good fight. But stop making up excuses as to why you got ‘taken to school’ in the art of beatings. And embarrassing beatings at that. There are so many natural and manmade disasters recently from genocide happening in Rohingya in Burma to hurricanes in America and the Caribbean. Add to that the hydrogen bomb test fired by

North Korea. A leading North Korean diplomat Han Tae-song actually said the bombs were ‘a gift package addressed to none other than the US’. Tae-song added that ‘The US will receive more gift packages from my country as long as it relies on reckless provocations and futile attempts to put pressure on the DPRK’. Sigh! When or how will this end? Where is the love! There are many in authority that could make a change but much prefer to let the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Let us be very wary about what’s happening in the US. Even hardcore Trump supporters are saying he could be impeached for over five allegations of misconduct and wrongdoing. The most famous of which is the claim of the Russians fixing the election in Trump favour. He has also made America a breeding ground for racism, bigotry, sexism, homophobia as well corruption and hatred of anything different. Congratulations to Serena Williams and Alex Ohanian on the birth of their baby girl. Let’s hope the new arrival dons her tennis gear to continue her mother’s bright legacy in court. Colin Jackson came out! Yes, he finally admits he is gay. Come on, who really didn’t know? All this and more in print in this month’s edition of ‘The Nubian Times’. To all you young ones, have a great first day back and to all those who are starting a new school, “Trust me, you got this. Go and do you”. Until next month, stay safe.

Even if the 32-year-old royal were to ask for her hand in marriage and the pair tie the knot – Markle, 36, would not be known as Princess Meghan. This is because of rules governing the British crown, only those born into the royal family can use the title Prince or Princess, followed by their first name. Therefore, if Meghan and Harry marry, she will be officially known as Her Royal Highness Princess Henry of Wales.

Rumours say that the prince will be taking actress Megan Markle to meet the Queen of England with plans to propose. Traditionally, meeting the Queen is a step away from becoming the princess. However, is England ready and open-minded to have its first bi-racial princess? Even though she is mixed race, the world still looks at her as black. You only should look at the comments under online articles about the couple and on social media to realise that. Meghan, who is black and white, received constant criticism from British media when Prince Harry and the actress

Manchester residents are invited to have their say on new measures to reduce dog fouling in Manchester. Manchester City Council are considering whether to make it an offence for dog-walkers not to be in possession of bags. In order to collect their pet’s poo. Residents are being asked to give their opinions on the idea. As part of a consultation on the introduction of Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs). Which are set to replace existing Dog Control orders. As part of the change, which is required by national legislation. The council is refreshing all aspects of its dog control regulations. Including those covering dogs off a lead in public places. Also, the maximum permitted number of dogs under control at once, dog exclusion zones and ‘on-lead’ areas in the city. The maximum penalty for breaching a PSPO upon conviction in a Magistrates court is £1,000. Hurricane destruction: First Harvey, now Irma

TNT News Schools in Manchester continue to celebrate a great set of A-Level results this year. This huge effort has literally seen them reach for the stars. Figures show the number of top A* grades in the city’s schools outstrips that of other schools nationally. Also, local schools are improving their top marks at a faster pace than others. The percentage of exam entries achieving the coveted A* grade in Manchester schools has increased this year to 10.9%. Which is 2.6 percentage points above the national figure of 8.3%. Similarly, the number of Manchester school exam entries achieving A*- A grades has also gone up this year to 26.1%. Which is only 0.2% below the national figure of 26.3%. Overall the percentage of entries achieving A*-E has dipped slightly this year, as it has nationally at 97.2%. Which is now just below the national figure of 97.9%. This year’s results come on the back of a move by exam boards to change the format of assessment for some exams which now no longer have a coursework element to them.

continues to pour in from the public and celebrities. Beyonce and her mum Tina posted a video on Instagram which showed them helping serve up food to families affected. Beyonce’s Destiny’s Child bandmate Michelle Williams was also on hand to help. The five-living former United States presidents joined forces recently to start a hurricane recovery effort to raise money for victims of Hurricane Harvey in Texas.

Colin Kaepernick I know my rights campaign TNT News Colin Kaepernick is shining a light on injustices that exist in the US, just as Malcolm X did a generation ago. In 2016, the 29-year-old American football quarterback gained national attention which swept across the world. He began protesting by not standing while the United States national anthem was being performed before the start of game. Motivated by what he viewed as the oppression of people of colour in the U.S, he chose to use this as a form or resistance. His actions prompted a wide variety of responses, including additional athletes in the NFL and other U.S. sports leagues protesting the anthem in various ways. His current free agency status in the NFL has also been the subject of discussion and controversy. Many believe that he is being blacklisted and punished for his protest. Mike Freeman, Bleacher Report’s lead NFL writer, reported that roughly 70% of NFL teams are unwilling to sign Kaepernick. This is not because they don’t believe he can play, but as punishment for expressing his political beliefs.“The rest genuinely hate him and can’t stand what he did,” an anonymous AFC general manager told Freeman.

Be Grateful

Ever since, he set up a free campaign for youth fully funded by himself. The campaign’s aim is to raise awareness on higher education, self-empowerment, and instruction to properly interact with law enforcement in various scenarios. Colin Kaepernick is standing up to injustices around the country by drawing our attention to them, because ‘that is the only way to start to fix them’, he believes. His campaign includes t-shirts with the words ‘I know my rights’ printed on the front. Essentially, the mission of the Colin Kapernick foundation is to ‘fight oppression of all kinds globally, through education and social activism’.

Manchester A Level students reach for the stars

As hurricanes are coming in short successions this year, it looks like the end of the world. Videos of waves washing over whole towns, taking upturned cars and palm trees with them, are from at least two hurricanes within 20 days. Just one week after Hurricane Harvey swept the state of Texas, three more – Jose, Katya, and Irma – are tearing across the Atlantic. Scientists blame global warming, saying rising sea temperatures have made naturally-occurring weather events more powerful. Thousands of people were left homeless and dozens died following flooding caused by Harvey last month. 400-mile-wide storm Hurricane Irmaknocked out power to more than 2million homes as it swept inland across the Florida Keys. Deaths are rising as swathes of Miami were flooded after Irma devastated all its path. Irma has affected an estimated 1.2m people in the Caribbean before heading on to Florida. The $10bn [£7.5bn] estimate for the Caribbean does not include damage in the Dominican Republic or Cuba, which were later in the storm’s path. Before Irma hit the US, Donald Trump tweeted: ‘The US Coast Guard, FEMA and all Federal and State brave people are ready. Here comes Irma. God bless everyone”. Support for the victims of Harvey

TNT News We are constantly striving to have more stuff. Buying stuff we can’t afford to impress people we don’t know or we don’t like. But are we any happier? Well, only you can answer that question, but I would say we are more miserable than ever. Some of the happiest and most grateful people I have met, live in developing countries. They don’t have much, but they are grateful for what they do have. There is so much we can learn from them. Being grateful is about acknowledging what you have and not bemoaning what you don’t have. Gratitude is an emotion similar to appreciation. Being grateful allows you to find peace and contentment, even in moments of real anxiety and crisis. Robert Emmons, a professor of Psychology at University of California, and author of ‘Gratitude Works’ states the following. ‘When people are grateful they feel more alert and alive’. So being grateful can be very positive. In fact, I believe that people who are positive are generally very grateful. It helps you to experience life at its best. So how can we become more grateful? Well, the following may help: Use Social Media to Share Your Gratitude:Whilst many people use social media to complain or vent their frustrations, you can start a gratitude movement by using it to express your appreciation. Say one thing you’re grateful for once a week or even every day on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc. You’ll likely attract some positive vibes and you might encourage others to do the same. Don’t compare your life to others: Why waste your time comparing yourself to other people, when you could be focusing on your goals and your achievements. Many of us foolishly believe that everyone else is having a fantastic time and doing really well. Even if they are, live your best life and do you. Be humble: I believe that gratitude and humility go hand in hand. The more you refine your ability to stay unassuming, the easier it should be to count the blessings in your life.

by Paul Beatty

A biting satire about a young man’s isolated upbringing and the race trial that sends him to the Supreme Court, Paul Beatty’s The Sellout showcases a comic genius at the top of his game. It challenges the sacred tenets of the United States Constitution, urban life, the civil rights movement, the father-son relationship, and the holy grail of racial equality – the black Chinese restaurant. The narrator is led to believe his father’s pioneering work will result in a memoir that will solve his family’s financial woes. But when his father is killed in a police shoot-out, he realises there never was a memoir. All that’s left is the bill for a drivethrough funeral.

The Underground Railroad

Waterstones

by Colson Whitehead

Cora is a slave on a cotton plantation in Georgia. Life is hellish for all the slaves but especially bad for Cora; an outcast even among her fellow Africans, she is coming into womanhood - where even greater pain awaits. When Caesar, a recent arrival from Virginia, tells her about the Underground Railroad, they decide to take a terrifying risk and escape. Matters do not go as planned and, though they manage to find a station and head north, they are being hunted. The Underground Railroad is at once a kinetic adventure tale of one woman’s ferocious will to escape the horrors of bondage and a shattering, powerful meditation on the history we all share.

The Girl Before by J.P. Delaney

Goodreads

Jane stumbles on the rental opportunity of a lifetime: the chance to live in a beautiful ultra-minimalist house designed by an enigmatic architect, on condition she abides by a long list of exacting rules. After moving in, she discovers that a previous tenant, Emma, met a mysterious death there and starts to wonder if her own story will be a re-run of the girl before. As twist after twist catches the reader off guard, Emma’s past and Jane’s present become inexorably entwined in this tense, page-turning portrayal of psychological obsession.

To eat well is to eat Manjaros To live well, is to eat well. To eat well is to eat Manjaros. Situated in the heart of the ever-bustling Curry Mile strip is Manchester’s new restaurant Manjaros. Boasting a fusion of ‘African cuisine and Caribbean delights’, Manjaros also draws inspiration from a plethora of culinary favourites from around the world. With an emblem of a tropicalcoloured chicken, the restaurant’s dishes transport you to variousdestinations without taking you from your seat. From Caribbean Lamb Curry, Vegetarian Rasta Rice, Italian style pizzas, Bolognese to burgers, Mediterranean hummus and toasted nachos, this joint has something for everyone. The establishment’s recent arrival, along with its assorted cuisine, is timely in Manchester – a city whose unity and pride in diversity was threatened by the Manchester Arena attack. The restaurant’s large glass panes allow natural daylight to flood into the room throughout the day, creating an airy atmosphere. The dark oak wooden furniture, cathedral lighting, exposed sandy brick walls and classic royal mirrors create a quirky balance of classy clean

ambience with antique elegance. As the food was brought to our table from the open-plan kitchen, what was immediately evident was the generous portions of each dish. First was the Mushroom Topped Parmesan – one of Manjaros’ speciality dishes. This is deep fried bread-crumbed chicken breast, topped with a creamy béchamel sauce and cheese then lightly grilled. It looks like well-stuffed pizza but it isn’t. Served with gourmet fries and salad, this dish does what it says on the menu – satiates with light flavours and a creamy aftertaste. Manjaros is not like any other restaurant however the closest resemblance it has with any other outlet is Nandos, but it isdefinitely more than Nandos! The Waka Waka Chicken is perhaps the closest similarity to Nandos in regard to both texture of meat and flavour of sauce. The portion is large, flavours tantalising and the combination with salad and steak chips is a welcome mix.

Bayadere - The Ninth Life at The Lowry TNT Entertainment Ground-breaking dance-maker ShobanaJeyasingh brings her radical reimagining of Marius Petipa’s legendary ballet La Bayadère to The Lowry. More than a retelling, it searches for the roots of the Bayadère temple dancer herself. It also searches the allure she has exerted in Europe over the centuries. The words of the celebrated French writer Théophile Gautier, who recorded his ambiguous impressions of Indian temple dancers in 1838, add to the rich mix of Gabriel Prokofiev’s specially commissioned score to form a unique and personal work. Following its Linbury Studio Theatre, Royal Opera House premiere in 2015, this new production tours with a bold new design. It is produced by the awardwinning Tom Piper who co-created the Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red poppy installation at the Tower of London.

and improve. It has given me more insight into even my hidden abilities. It has pushed me to try and be better,” the London-based singer told TNT.

Headlined by Manchester rapper Geko, the tour will feature the four top artists from the 2017 iluvlive Hotlist. Autumn is one of the four artists and is joined by Jords, SNE and Matt Wills. Voted for by the public and the iluvlive team, the four artists will kick off the tour in Manchester.

Since the show, Autumn received overwhelming support from her Somali community. “I think I was the first Somali to feature on primetime TV; which is a big deal”, the 5AM singer enthused.

Although Autumn has performed on The Voice when it was in Manchester, September’s iluvlive show will be her first time singing in the city since the TV show. Unlike some artists who realise their chosen career path later in life, Autumn has always known she wanted to be a singer-songwriter “since I was a kid”. “It wasn’t until I was 16 though, that I started to do open mics in London”, the Dordrecht-born singer said. After the iluvlive tour, Autumn will be doing more live performances. “I really want to be able to reach a lot of people, introduce the songs. I just want to get better”, she said.

SNE

Ahead of his first-ever gig in Manchester, London-based rapper and singer SNE spoke to TNT about his music and what to expect this month. Already making waves on the UK Grime and RnB scene, the ‘Tell Me’ artist has seen his career spring from originality. With a seamless mix of melodic RnB choruses and measured rhythmical rap verses, the 23-year-old has earned a name for himself in the urban scene by way of innovation. From party favourites like Rico Rodrigo, Tiana Major to lounge classics such as Come Again and Tell Me, SNE is consistent. For the past decade, Hackney’s Golden Child has interlaced a career from Grime to Rap to RnB and now weaves all genres into his solo career. Combining weighty bass notes with rhyming dancehallesque verses and infectious hooks, SNE is proving his versatility. SNE’s biggest breakthrough came after the release of his 2016 mixtape ‘Essence’ which led him to perform in Atlanta and Canada. Prior to this, he has been releasing singles and “getting my music out there and creating”. As for challenges, “learning how to get the balance right between what I love and what the people want” tops them all. “I used to have a theory that you make just what you love but I have had to adapt to the music UK scene. It is a case of looking at the music and being current and still
