Coronation Street has unveiled a tribute to superfan Martyn Hett as part of its new set. Martyn was one of 22 people killed in the Manchester Arena bombing at an Ariana Grande concert in 2017. He was later buried in a Corrie themed coffin. The 57-year-old soap revealed its new set extension, including a specially commissioned mosaic covered memorial bench dedicated to the 22 victims. The bench will have pride of place in the urban garden in memory of superfan Martyn and all those who lost their lives. Martyn’s family were the first people to see the new set last week during a private visit. The late PR worker became famous online for his viral video, “The Audrey Roberts Noise”, referring to the inquisitive “Hmmm?” the character often concludes her sentences with. Audrey herself – star Sue Nicholls – was there to cut the ribbon on the new set. The moment was pre-empted by a rendition of “The Audrey Roberts Noise”. Series Producer Kate Oates said: “The Victoria Street extension represents an exciting chapter in Corrie history: an amazing new stage, full of dramatic potential. “Our amazingly talented design team have created

Manchester science centre awards £100,000 to local healthcare initiatives

Health Innovation Manchester has awarded almost £100,000 in funding to three local organisations. The organisations are developing digital healthcare solutions aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of citizens. The projects being funded include an initiative to improve outcomes for patients at high risk of complex wounds. There is also an app to prevent falls amongst older people by encouraging them to exercise. Also included is a digital platform aimed at identifying and reducing the risk of obesity in children and young people. To be awarded funding, organisations were required to demonstrate collaboration with NHS or social care partners and, potentially, academic or other industry partners. Health Innovation Manchester is an academic health science centre that works with local universities and care providers in Manchester to drive new technological development. Chief executive Ben Bridgewater said it was “vital that innovative digital products are brought to market quickly and efficiently” so that health and social care could meet the demands of modern patients.

Anyone buying a knife online will be banned from having it sent to a residential address, under a government crackdown following a surge in street stabbings. New legislation, to be brought forward within weeks, will also make it illegal to possess zombie knives and knuckledusters in private – or any knife on further education premises. Rapid firing rifles will be banned and the legal definition for threatening someone with an offensive weapon changed to make prosecutions easier. The measures – which also include a ban on acid sales to under-18s – will all be included in a new “serious violence strategy”, to be launched by the home secretary, Amber Rudd, on Monday. It follows six shootings and stabbings in London in the past week alone and more than 50 murders in the capital in just the first three months of the year. The strategy will mark a “major shift in the government’s response to knife crime and gun crime”, Ms Rudd will argue, while striking “a balance between prevention and robust law enforcement”. “This government has always stood for law and order and to tackle violent crime effectively, robust legislation and powerful law enforcement must be in place,” the home secretary said.
