Manchester Arena attack: Confusion hindered response

Inside Edition

Firefighters who heard the Manchester Arena bomb go off were sent away from the scene despite a paramedic arriving within 11 minutes, a report says. “Out of the loop” crews took two hours to attend the scene of the deadly blast, which killed 22 people last May. A report by Lord Kerslake found poor communication meant chief fire officers were “risk-averse” and kept emergency trained responders away. The fire service’s chief apologised “unreservedly” for the failures. Suicide bomber Salman Abedi detonated a home-made device at 22:31 BST as 14,000 people streamed out of an Ariana Grande concert on 22 May, leaving more than 700 injured. According to the report, the first North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) paramedic arrived at 22:42 and was told the incident was a “suicide bomber” by police. A police duty inspector declared Operation Plato, a plan for dealing with a suspected marauding armed terrorist, and wrongly assumed others were aware. Despite protocol allowing emergency workers to continue treating the injured, a senior fire officer “stuck to rules” and kept emergency responders 500m (1,600ft) away from any zone of danger. It was “fortuitous” the ambulance service was not

informed, otherwise it might have pulled out paramedics who instead stayed and saved lives, the 226-page report said. The report also said the fire officer was unable to get through to the force duty inspector.

Disabled models’ photoshoot encourages diversity in fashion TNT News

There is still a lot of work to do, when it comes to representing everyone, not just tall, slim, able-bodied, cis white women. To help us, Models of Diversity put together a photoshoot featuring five models, each wearing Swimsuits For All. They hope the photoshoot will ask what’s stopping the fashion, beauty, and media industries from employing models with disabilities. ‘I have been photographing and giving workshops for disabled models on behalf of Models of Diversity (MoD) since early 2012,’ says photographer James Lyon. ‘Working alongside MoD I’ve helped cast and co-ordinate many fashion shows, both

specifically for disabled models and as mixed ability’ catwalk events. ‘To me photography is a great medium to deal with some of the issues regarding selfesteem and disability, especially to those who have recently become disabled.’ The models in the photoshoot are Fran, Carla, Dominique, Ellie, and Angelica.

Although we are making strides in improving diversity in the fashion and beauty industry, those strides are frustratingly slow.

Fran was born with cerebral palsy. She swam competitively until an injury forced her to stop seven years later. She now models to inspire others with disabilities. A fire when she was seven months old left Carla with burn scars and the loss of her left hand. Her confidence has grown over the years and now she embraces her scars. Dominique has invisible disabilities – she has autism, learning difficulties, and foetal alcohol syndrome, which has led to

sight and hearing problems. Ellie has Incontinentia Pigmenti, which can cause scarring, tooth loss, pain, and mobility issues. Ellie now studies hair and makeup and models.

Manchester duo in world’s top 10 ‘must-read women poets’

TNT News Two leading poets from Manchester Metropolitan University have been named in the world’s top 10 ‘women poets to read now’. The Poetry Book Society’s (PBS) has honoured Poet Laureate Professor Dame Carol Ann Duffy and Dr Helen Mort. Both, from the University’s renowned Manchester Writing School, are among the top must-read female poets in the world currently. The list was voted for by social media followers of the PBS accounts, @PoetryBookSoc, to celebrate International Women’s Day. PBS’s 100 Women Poets list celebrated the diversity of poetry across the globe, highlighting the power of the female voice. The double ranking serves to reinforce the creative writing excellence across the School. It benefits students’ learning and reflects the literary strength in Manchester, recently designated a UNESCO City of Literature. Dr Mort, who joined the University as Lecturer in Creative Writing in 2016, said: “The PBS is one of our foremost contemporary poetry organisations. For two of the University’s poets to be recognised is very special, an affirmation of the depth of quality across the Manchester Writing School.

Pay rise agreed for 1.3m NHS staff

NHS staff are finally set to get a pay rise, marking the end of a seven-year wage cap. Unions representing more than a million NHS workers are to recommend acceptance of a pay offer. The offer is of between 6.5% and 29% over the next three years. This comes after months of talks between the government and leaders of 14 trade unions representing nurses, midwives, ambulance drivers, porters and other non-medical staff. It was previously feared more NHS workers would be forced to give up a day’s holiday in return for the salary increase. However, the government has now scrapped that plan. Ministers were insisting on an extra day’s work a year as a precondition of the deal. Workers will have to be consulted but it is expected they will receive higher pay from July, backdated to April. It breaks a wage cap that has existed since 2010. The deal covers NHS workers in England at a cost of around £4 billion. This will be new money from the Government rather than coming from existing budgets. Money is expected to be made available for similar pay rises in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The deal will be structured to give higher rises to the lowest paid. Pay bands will be changed so that workers can move more quickly through their pay grade.
