Facial ageing software helps smokers quit for good

MMU

Smoking has been in the sights of successive campaigns from the government, NHS, charities and health groups. In 2016, 15.8% of adults in the UK smoked, down from 17.2% in 2015, according to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). In 1974, almost half of all adults smoked. Some people stubbornly continue, however. In a bid to tackle this, researchers at Manchester Metropolitan University developed new tactics alongside the traditional. Professor Sarah Grogan is a health psychologist, and a specialist in body image and how that might influence our health behaviours. By utilising specialist age-related facial morphing software, her research looks at the impact of our habits on how our faces might age. It uses the shock factor of seeing ourselves in older age to inspire change today. “It’s simple, effective and has a massive impact on people’s motivation to change. A lot of people can’t get the image of themselves as an aged smoker out of their heads,” said Prof Grogan. Damage to appearance, more than health, is key Prof Grogan first conducted studies in 2008 at Staffordshire University. “We can break bad habits after being confronted with evidence of their adverse impacts. However, in many cases, we may continue regardless, often with negative consequences for our health.”

“We initially spoke to young people aged 17-24 in a focus group study. Asked them what would motivate them to quit smoking – and the key thing was damage to their appearance.

L’Oreal hijab model quits over ‘anti-Israel’ tweets an illegal state” and “Israel = Pharaoh. Both are child murderers”, according to the Daily Mail. Her stepping down comes a week after she announced she was included in the L’Oreal Paris hair care campaign. In the advertisement she wore a pale pink headscarf and stood in front of a bright pink background. “Whether or not your hair is on display,” she says in the ad, “doesn’t affect how much you care about it.” She received praise online for empowering women and girls, especially for those wearing hijabs. But this was soon met with backlash over her tweets that she has since deleted. A spokesperson for L’Oreal Paris told Newsbeat: “We have recently been made aware of a series of tweets posted in 2014 by Amena Khan, who was featured in a UK advertising campaign.

TNT News A beauty blogger has pulled out of a L’Oreal campaign after it emerged she had posted “anti-Israel” tweets in 2014. Amena Khan, from Leicester, said she “deeply regret[s]” the tweet and apologised for the “upset and hurt” caused by the posts. Ms Khan was set to be the first woman in a hijab to be a part of an advert for hair care and would have started alongside the likes of pop star Cheryl Tweedy. She announced the news on Instagram and said: “I deeply regret the content of the tweets I made in 2014, and sincerely apologise for the upset and hurt that they have caused. “Championing diversity is one of my passions, I don’t discriminate against anyone. I have chosen to delete them as they do not represent the message of harmony that I stand for.” In the tweets Ms Khan said, “Israel is

“We appreciate that Amena has since apologised for the content of these tweets and the offence they have caused. “L’Oreal Paris is committed to tolerance and respect towards all people. We agree with her decision to step down from the campaign.”

Woman puts menstrual blood on face to fight stigma

Yazmina.jade

HuffPost UK

TNT News A woman has chosen to fight the stigma around periods by smearing her menstrual blood all over her face. Yazmina Jade is a self-proclaimed blood witch and spirit healer who’s dedicated to ‘reclaiming the Feminine through embodiment and sisterhood.’ Yazmina recently smeared her own menstrual blood to her face, as a way to connect with her own body. ‘Through my teenage years and early 20s, I didn’t enjoy or care for my monthly period,’ Yazmina wrote on Instagram. ‘You could say I had an unhealthy relationship with my monthly bleed and didn’t really enjoy getting it at all!!! There was a COMPLETE disconnect from my womb and how I felt towards bleeding. ‘I would use tampons that often hurt and felt so unnatural (a form of self-abuse really). ‘I had no idea, no guidance and I just did what everyone else did, EVEN though it didn’t feel good OR NATURAL at all. ‘It’s taken me years to realise that bleeding is a sacred ritual time, for women to go inward, to let go, to create, to use in powerful manifestation and to honour our womb power and MOTHER EARTH...I have been drawn more and more to reconnecting with my body and especially the womb...
