Old Trafford’s £20m Limelight Health Hub opens TNT News Trafford Housing Trust (THT) has announced details of the phased opening of its £20m Limelight Development at Shrewsbury Street in Old Trafford. Limelight will initially be open to the public on Monday 2 October to allow residents to help ‘road test’ the building. Residents will also have an opportunity to give feedback and help shape the way the facilities and services are delivered. Following this ‘soft opening’ period, the scheme
will officially open on Thursday 7 December with a community event from 2pm-8pm attended by local dignitaries, community groups, partners and VIPs. Renowned author, broadcaster and poet Lemn Sissay will be in attendance. Also coming is Commonwealth Games gold medallist, and CEO of the Diane Modahl Sports Foundation, Diane Modahl. Built on the site of the old Shrewsbury Street Community Centre, Limelight is set to be a unique, community-based facility. It
will offer a range of primary healthcare facilities with a library, café, multi-purpose event space, hair and beauty salon and opticians. In addition, Limelight will offer a nursery and services aimed at families and young people. This will make it a truly intergenerational space available to everyone of all ages. Of these amenities, Old Trafford Library will reopen at Limelight on Monday 2 October. Also opening that week will be the Amaryllis Day Nursery, the new opticians’ practice eyePAD Opticians, Limelight Café
and Limelight Hair & Beauty Hub. Two GP practices and a pharmacy will also open later in October. From 2 October, residents will also be able to start hiring a range of spaces at Limelight which can be used for events, such as weddings, christenings, corporate functions, conferences and exhibitions. David Teasdale, Limelight Centre Manager, said: “It’s a very exciting time for us, and the fact we’ve got Lemn Sissay and Diane Modahl lined up for the official launch on December 7th is fantastic”.
Lemn Sissay to increase black men in legal sector TNT News Poet and broadcaster Lemn Sissay, the Chancellor of The University of Manchester, is launching a university bursary for black men. The new bursary is designed to increase the number of black men embarking on careers in law and the criminal justice sector. A first of its kind, the Lemn Sissay Law Bursaries consider applicants’ race, gender and socioeconomic background. The School of Law’s Black Lawyers Matter project was set up in 2016 by a group of academics, community leaders and legal practitioners. It was born after the discovery that out of some 1200 undergraduates, only 14 UK-based Black males of African and Caribbean heritage were registered on law and criminology courses. Additionally, none of these were from lower socio-economic backgrounds.

I’m not saying all but compare the numbers to our white counterparts, can we say yes using this comparison. Although many things have improved, covertness reigned until Brexit; now we’re back to direct racism, as hate crimes spiral out of control. As many more crimes are fuelled by hatred due to, solely at times, the colour of one’s skin. When, if ever, will change come? Let me leave you with some literary substance from one of the greats for black history month and try to teach your children something refreshing about black history month. Review exposes racial bias towards ethnic minorities in UK TNT News A review led by Labour MP David Lammy, found that the system in UK is biased and discriminates in treatment of people from ethnic minority backgrounds. Mr Lammy said, young offenders from ethnic minorities will become “the next generation” of criminals unless the justice system is reformed. The Labour MP has made 35 recommendations, including delaying or dropping some prosecutions. The government responded saying it would “look carefully” at the suggestions. According to the review, 25% of the prison population in England and Wales is made up of people from black, Asian and minority ethnic
(BAME) backgrounds. In the youth justice system, that percentage becomes 41%. Just 14% of the country’s population is made up of these groups. It has highlighted various “concerning” statistics, including a rise in the proportion of first-time offenders from these backgrounds to 19% - up from 11% - in the past 10 years, and the same increase in the proportion of young people reoffending. An increase in the proportion of first-time offenders from these backgrounds to 19% – up from 11% – in the past 10 years, was a statistic highlighted as “concerning” by the report, and the same increase in the proportion of young people reoffending.

Violet Brown - World’s oldest person dies at 117 TNT News The oldest person in the world, a Jamaican woman who was 117-years-old, has died. Violet Mosse Brown, died in Jamaica at around 2.30pm on Friday 15 September 2017. She was the last living subject of Queen Victoria and used to work on a plantation. She became the world’s oldest person in April 2017 after Italian Emma Morano, who was also 117, died. Mrs Mosse Brown, who was born on 10 March 1900, lived in North West Jamaica. She was the mother of six and a greatgrandmother several times over. Since her fame, she become
beloved to many across the globe especially from her interview with the Jamaican Observer. The interview was done to celebrate her 110th birthday. In it she said her secrets to living to such an old age were eating cows’ feet, not drinking rum and reading the bible. “Really and truly, when people ask what me eat and drink to live so long, I say to them that I eat everything, except pork and chicken, and I don’t drink rum and them things,” she said. “You know, sometimes I ask myself, ‘Am I really 110 years old?’ because I don’t feel like 110”.

Black History Month; has anything really changed?
British Muslim Heritage Centre donates £14,000 to Emergency Fund The British Muslim Heritage Centre (BMHC) has donated £14,000 to the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund. Following the attack, the Centre held vigils and prayers for the victims and their families. It also celebrated the courage and sacrifice of Manchester’s emergency services. Additionally, it praised the warmth and solidarity of the city’s various communities. The centre also set up a collection, Muslims for Manchester, which raised an amazing £14,000.
Thanks to this and other generous donations from the public the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund has now raised £18m. Of this, £10m has already been distributed to the bereaved families and to people who were hospitalised following the attack. The trustees are now working with the NHS, the police and other organisations. They are working to determine how to use the rest of the funds to best help people affected by the attack. Nasar Mahmood, chair of the BMHC said
“The BMHC has a proud record of working to counter extremism and terror in all its forms”. BMHC is one of the major Muslim organisations in the region that does stand against all forms of terror. Mahmood said the centre is wishes “to give all the support we can to the victims and their families. We are proud to have raised £14,000, which we hope will go some way to support the victims and their families”.

Psychologists at the University of Manchester have developed Culturally-adapted Family Intervention (CaFI) for African-Caribbean people diagnosed with schizophrenia and their families.

In the UK, more African-Caribbean people are diagnosed with schizophrenia than any other ethnic group. Unfortunately, they have worse care and outcomes. Family intervention (FI) helps people with schizophrenia to recover but services struggle to deliver FI. It is especially difficult for people from minority groups to get FI, so it is unknown if FI would work as well for African-Caribbeans as it does for White British people. It is also unknown if they would like FI, even one made just for them. 1. Psychologists could work with AfricanCaribbean people and healthcare staff to change FI to better meet the needs of this community 2. Other people could support service users who were not in contact with their families to take part

Tuesday Flanders, the young boy’s mother who follows the Rastafarian faith, says the school’s demand is religious discrimination and an attack on her culture.
She hoped a meeting with headteacher Alun Ebenezer would sort out the problem.
Fulham Boys School, in Mund Street, is handling the case as a social issue rather than a religious one. The school even put Chikayzea in isolation on 11 September because of his hair.
She said the whole episode was upsetting Chikayzea, adding: ‘No school should be able to dictate things like that. It can never be right. It’s a human right. This is a child that goes to school to learn, not for fashion.’
Flanders said she tied her son’s hair up so that it did not breach policy on length. However, she received a call on his first day at school last this September saying that it must be cut.
‘But I was told at the end of the day they have a policy of no dreadlocks at the school.’
Mr Ebenezer described FBS as a ‘strict academic school’ with ‘very distinctive ethos and culture’ and pupils from different cultures and religions.

Chikayzea, a student at Fulham Boys School (FBS), has been told he needs to cut his dreadlocks to adhere to the school’s strict uniform and appearance policy.
‘He has dreadlocked hair because he is a Rastafarian. His hair does come down below his shoulder which is why I tied it up on his first day at school,’ she said.

A recent meeting to recruit brits with Jamaican heritage to help with social projects in Jamaica ended on a high. There was a high attendance and attendees from the diaspora signed as new members on the night. Held on 6 September at the High Commission of Jamaica in London, the event was full to capacity with over 80 people in attendance. Jamaicans Inspired (JamIn) Chairman, Nathaniel Peat, said: “There is a saying: ‘You can go alone and go far or you can go together and go further and faster’. We are trying to mobilise ourselves and work together to go further and faster for Jamaica. Too often we hear negative things about Jamaica and we want to change that perception. On the night, there were presentations about various investment opportunities in Jamaica and the adopt-a-clinic initiative. The latter helps invigorate health centres in Jamaica via donations of monetary gifts or services. There were also performances by 2017 Song 4 Jamaica winner, Zeena Banks and finalist Garfield Walter (aka Ash I). JamIn Regional Director, Khori Hyde, discussed ways in which the diaspora could support the Jamaican economy with small investments. “1.9 million tourists visit Jamaica every year. Retention is critical but only 20% of revenue from tourism is retained in Jamaica. We need to take control of this and one of the ways we can to do that is to invest in real estate in Jamaica”.

TNT News Just weeks after Hurricane Irma ransacked the Caribbean, Hurricane Maria pummelled the region again. The storm caused widespread property damage, flooding and power failures on in Dominica, Guadeloupe and Puerto Rico. So far there have been dozens of deaths reported across the Caribbean. There are a few local organisations that have vowed to help in recovery efforts. Members of the public are urged to still do their research before donating via each given charity. The Dominica Hurricane Relief Fund was set up by the government of the island. An official call for help from the Dominica High Commission confirmed the Prime Minister of Dominica Roosevelt Skerrit’s plea. Mr Skerrit appealed to nationals and friends of Dominica across the UK to mobilise efforts in obtaining resources to aid Dominica. The government of Dominica is collecting donations through JustGiving, a crowdfunding website. The money will go toward temporary roofing, blankets and non-perishable foods.

11 jailed for Abdul Hafidah murder with guilty by association law TNT News Ten men and a 15-year-old boy have been jailed for a combined 168 years after being convicted of the gangland killing of Abdul Hafidah. Abdul-Wahab Hafidah was chased through rush-hour traffic in the Moss Side area on 12 May 2016. Shortly after, he was bludgeoned with a hammer, run over and stabbed to death. Some of the young men were jailed were convicted through racial stereotypes linking them to a gang. They have been found “guilty by association,” their families say. At Manchester Crown Court, early September, Devonte Cantrill, 20, Delroy Wright, 18, Durrell Ford, 20, were all found
guilty. Others convicted are Nathanial Williams, 19, Renau Walters, 19, Trey Wilson, 19, and Durrell Goodall, 20. They were all found guilty of murder and were sentenced to between 16 and 23 years. Remekell Samuels, 19, Devonte Neish, 18, William George, 21, and a 15-year-old boy who cannot be named for legal reasons, found guilty of manslaughter, were sentenced to between five and 12 years. Cantrill, of no fixed address, was the only defendant in possession of a knife, which was used to fatally stab Hafidah.

The King of Saudi Arabia has lifted ban on women driving TNT News
The order – issued by King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud – overturned a longstanding policy which had become a powerful symbol of oppression. Often known as a conservative kingdom, Saudi Arabia is currently the only country where the act of women driving is forbidden. The move was announced on television and also by the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Effectively, the royal decree mandates the creation of a ministerial body to give advice on the practicalities of the decree within 30 days. A full implementation of the order by June
2018 and this is women it is expected women will be able to drive in the country. “The royal decree will implement the provisions of traffic regulations, including the issuance of driving licences for men and women alike,” the state-run Saudi Press Agency said. Saudi Arabia is a Muslim monarchy ruled according to Sharia law, with the royal decree stipulating that the new rules must “apply and adhere to the necessary Sharia standards”. State media said that the Council of Senior Religious Scholars – the country’s highest religious authority that advises the King on religious matters – had approved the permissibility of the decree.

Joanne Wickenden had been accused of racism by online critics after she complained in the Snapchat video that Nigerian passengers were demanding. She said they were always wanting upgrades as they needed extra legroom to accommodate their ‘big d***s swinging from side to side’. The 23-year-old ‘no longer works’ for BA, the company said before adding: ‘We expect the utmost professionalism from our staff when they are representing British Airways’. The flight attendant used to work for easyjet and during the video, she wore her BA uniform. Wickenden posted the video captioned ‘I can’t cope with this flight’ prior to a trip from Heathrow to Nigeria’s capital Abuja on 22 September.

Restored African forest now shelters rare monkeys TNT News

Scientists worked carefully for twenty years to protect and restore a forest in Benin bringing back its former glory.
TNT News In a sign of solidarity and humanity, The Bahamas has opened its doors to Dominica. Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis extended the offer to Dominican PM Roosevelt Skerrit as they held brief talks in New Providence. Minnis also confirmed that schools in The Bahamas would be accepting Dominican students. “There would have been a lot of children that would have been displaced, and therefore we are opening our school system to accommodate them,” Dr Minnis told Skerrit. “Our Immigration Minister would deal with that matter so that they can be placed within our school system”. Minnis also appealed to Bahamian citizens to open their homes to temporarily house those severely affected by Hurricane Maria. “I’m sure we have a lot of Bahamians out there who would assist in accommodating these individuals, both financially and otherwise. Then there are a lot of Dominicans here who would also have families there, and therefore we would accommodate those individuals also.
They thinned out invasive species of plants and trees and reintroduced 253 species whose seeds and plantlets they had collected from the remnants of the original forest. Now, the rehabilitated forest is home to 600 different species of plant and has become a sanctuary for many animals. Most importantly, it has become a refuge for red-bellied monkeys, an endangered primate found only in Benin and Nigeria.
The monkey – whose official name is the white-throated guenon – was once considered extinct due to constant hunting for its beautiful fur. However, it has survived and is now thriving in the restored Drabo Forest in southern Benin. The 14-hectare forest reserve is a model for conservation. It is also a model of how scientists and local people can work together to protect and rebuild their environment. A research paper describing the twodecade process said: “The biodiversity richness of the rehabilitated forests of Drabo now rivals that of natural rainforest remnants of the region.

Keys’ mother is a breast cancer survivor, which she reveals in a video clip alongside McCartney. “I really wanted to show my support for Stella’s campaign by wearing her Ophelia Whistling lingerie set, where a percentage of the proceeds are donated to Memorial
Sloan Kettering Breast Examination Center of Harlem (New York),” said Keys in the accompanying campaign video. “This is super important to me. I was raised in Harlem. So, this really resonates with me and my mother is a breast cancer survivor. I don’t think I’ve ever got to really share that story, so this is important to me”. Founded in 1979, the Memorial Sloan Kettering Breast Examination Centre features an outreach programme and has screened more than 200,000 women for the disease, with experts also providing counselling and education services.

For nearly seven hours, Dick Gregory’s family and friends paid tribute to him at a funeral that proved to be a celebration of life and love. Having touched millions during his 84 years of life, Gregory had such an enormous life before he died on 19 August 2017.
TNT News An eight-year-old boy has survived being hung from a rope by a group of teenagers who were taunting him with racial slurs, his family has claimed. The incident occurred in Claremont, New Hampshire on 28 August. The boy has been treated at area hospitals for cuts and bruises to his neck. He has since returned to school. Nick Cannon protests over police shooting of a black man TNT News US Rapper Nick Cannon was among the hundreds of people protesting in St Louis over a police officer’s acquittal in the shooting death of a black man. Cannon was filmed raising his fists alongside people chanting “no justice, no profit”. He appeared in numerous social media posts of the marches in St. Louis. He was also wearing a Colin Kaepernick jersey. The former husband of Mariah Carey has become another celebrity to come out in support of the former 49ers quarterback. A judge in the Missouri city ruled that white former police officer Jason Stockley was not guilty of murdering suspected drug dealer Anthony Lamar Smith following a high-speed chase in 2011. The decision sparked two nights of violent protests in St Louis with at least 38 people arrested. Hundreds of people turned out for initially peaceful protests after the verdict, but the situation turned violent the following night. Police were forced to break up the crowd with tear gas. However, black people have lived in the UK for almost two thousand years. In-fact, the historian and author Peter Fryer states in his book (Staying Power), ‘there were Africans in Britain before the English came here’. Fryer explains that African Roman soldiers lived in Britain from 200AD in their hundreds. Many had families and children here and we know that they were buried here. In the 1500’s there was a black community in Britain. One of them was a musician who worked in the court of Henry VIII. His name was John Blanke and he was a trumpeter. The black community in London, was so big that Queen Elizabeth wrote an open letter to the Mayor of London in 1596. She complained that there were too many black people (blackamoors) in her realm and they should be expelled. Sounds familiar… Many British born black people fought for this country in World War 1, including Walter Tull. Walter Tull was born in Folkstone in 1888 and was probably the first black professional outfield footballer. He played for Tottenham Hotspur and Northampton. Walter joined the army and became the first black officer in the British Army. Despite a ruling banning black people from exercising control and barring them from officer positions. Walter died heroically in France in March 1918.

Co-produced by Sadler’s Wells Theatre, Bayadère – The Ninth Life is a contemporary dance work. It takes the figure of the Bayadère – the Indian temple dancer to explore the allure she exerted (and continues to exert) in Europe. Jeyasingh told TNT: “It opens with an online conversation between two young British Asian men. One of them has been taken to see the original ballet by his girlfriend. As he describes it to his friend, he is transported – kidnapped if you like – into the extravagant, excessive world of the 19th century ballet”. She said she decided to choreograph this show after being impresses by the choreography and spectacle of 19th century classic ballet La Bayadère. “I knew I would create a response to it one day. It is 25 years later but I have done it!”, she said. Having been invited by The Lowry to Manchester, Jeyasingh was thrilled “to be opening the show there”. There are ten dancers and one actor in the piece, she told TNT. Some of the dancers like Avatâra Ayuso, Noora Kela and Sooraj Subramaniam who plays the Bayadère have worked with Jeyasingh previously. “It’s a vibrant mix of people which makes for a good atmosphere in the rehearsal studio”, the British choreographer said.

The season for must-see cinema is upon us, and at the very top of the watch list for anyone interested in Black filmmakers and storytelling is Dee Rees’s Mudbound. The Sundance hit takes place in a small Southern town post-World War II. It boasts an incredible cast of indie veterans and A-listers, including Jason Mitchell and Mary J. Blige. After months of reading the amazing reviews and hearing all the buzz surrounding Mudbound, we finally have our first look at the film. Mudbound is based on the 2008 Hillary Jordan novel of the same name and focuses on two families. The families, one white and one Black, live on the same farm in the postWorld War II South. In addition to Mary J. Blige, Jason Clarke, Jason Mitchell, Garrett Hedlund are on the list of A-listers in the project. Also in the film is Carey Mulligan, Rob Morgan and Jonathan Banks. The movie was praised during Sundance festival, but there was no bidding war for the rights. Director Rees was surprised, citing: “I’m surprised it didn’t sell that first night,” she told Variety. “Wait, what the f**k? It’s undeniable. The audience is into it. What happened?” What happened is, Netflix saw the film’s potential and swooped in with an offer. And now, it could be the streaming provider’s first real Oscar contender.

Since putting out ‘Baba’,he has blended some African and Arabic music. Geko still incorporates ‘a dash of UK music’ to keep things uniquely familiar. Through his career so far, his biggest challenge is ‘not saying everything’. He admits to the battling with trying not to write ‘what doesn’t need to be said’ but sometimes it’s unavoidable. Looking ahead, Geko has his 22 EP out soon. Still working on it, ‘I want to make sure this is my best work to date. Expect great features’.

Shares in Petra Diamonds have slumped 7% after the FTSE 250 miner reported a disappointing set of results. The company warned that legal challenges in Tanzania could mean it breaches its debt covenants once again. The stock slid to 77.50p in early trade after Petra warned that failure to resolve a dispute with the Tanzanian government over diamond exports may result in it breaching two of its covenant measures. Petra Diamonds has said it will cut investment in Tanzania if it is prevented from shipping stones to its overseas marketing office, as tensions between foreign-owned mining companies and the government mount. The company said it would “monitor the situation very closely and take decisive action if required”. Petra had already warned in June that it was in talks with its lenders after suffering a six-month delay at one of its major projects, resulting in it missing production guidance for the year.

According to a report by Forbes, there is evidence that the Women’s NBA is significantly underpaying players. This season, Sylvia Fowles led the WNBA in field goal percentage and finished second in rebounding per game. Fowles also tied for second in blocks per game and ranked fifth in points per game. Her team – the Minnesota Lynx – also finished with the best record in the WNBA. For all this, Fowles was named league’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).
