When you talk about junior golf in Northeast Ohio the first name that comes to mind is Jimmy Beers. While there is no official title, Beers would easily qualify as Mr. Junior Golf. He has made a lifetime commitment to junior golf, and it doesn’t appear it will end anytime soon. That is why he has been named as the recipient of this award for the third time in three decades. Simply, he has earned it. Every student and parent and/or grandparent who has had a child experience Jimmy Beers Golf should be glad they did. In his 27 years as a PGA Professional no one can remember Beers saying “no” to anyone asking for help or volunteers. His list of accomplishments is longer than any par-5, from developing and conducting programs to producing winning players and teams to traveling the country to promote his style of giving back to the game. He has been a guest speaker at the Cleveland Golf Show four times and three times he has addressed the crowds at the national PGA Show in Orlando. PGA Junior League, PGA Junior Camps, PGA Family Cup, PGA HOPE, First Tee of Akron, Ohio Girls Golf Foundation, NOPGA Junior Golf Summit Panelist, Firestone Junior Cup, Drive, Chip & Putt. Beers has been there, done that. This year he became the first assistant captain for the winning NOPGA Team in the second Junior Ohio Cup. The list goes on and on. Just like Beers himself.
When it comes to player development Drew Pierson wins the Grand Slam. Whether it is in his current capacity as coowner of The Clubhouse training facility or in his former role as Director of Golf at Shaker Heights Country Club, Pierson has reached players of all ages, skill and experience-levels, genders and those with physical limitations. He has been responsible for founding clinics for both children and adult beginners, advanced programs for middle schoolers, high schoolers and adults and expanding to senior citizens wanting private lessons, not only with the game’s fundamentals but to include physical fitness and training. For the past 16 years he has worked with players with physical disabilities, including several players who have prosthetic legs and arms. He helped a double amputee prepare for the USGA Adaptive Open. He has worked with students from Hathaway Brown School and the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. He has coopted with the cities of Cleveland, Shaker Heights and Beachwood on various programs. He has shared his knowledge with programs at Shaker Heights Country Club, Canterbury Golf Club and the new Highland Park Golf Foundation. Well decorated as a player in Section events – he has represented the NOPGA as a three-time member of the Ohio Cup Team, he also has displayed his skills as a coach, captaining the NOPGA Team to victories in the first two Junior Ohio Cup Matches.
The Patriot Award accords special recognition to a PGA Golf Professional who personifies patriotism through the game and demonstrates unwavering commitment and dedication to the men and women who have valiantly served and protected our country. While programs such as PGA HOPE and Patriot Day Golf are magnificent means to interact and thank our veterans on a periodical basis, Erin Craig works with them every day. One of her goals is to make sure Veterans feel they belong and are welcome when they arrive at her facility. On military specific days she makes sure the flower beds are lined with American and service branch flags. She encourages her staff to wear red, white and blue. She and her staff repeatedly thank the Veterans for their service, and she enlists able-bodied Veterans as volunteers to give the attendees someone to whom they can relate. For the last three years Erin has conducted a 6-week long PGA HOPE program at her facility and held a session for women only this fall as part of that program. She works closely with the Louis Stokes VA Clinic and the outpatient programs for Spinal Cord Injury, Poly Trauma and Amputees visit twice a year. For the first time she has been able to host 90-minute golf and fitness clinics for the Veterans from the VA Hospital. Every fall she conducts the “Stars, Stripes and Links” event for Veterans with disabilities and 25 Veterans regularly attend her Turn Clinics for golfers with physical disabilities. Through specific grants Erin is able to cover the $300 yearly membership at The Turn for any Veteran wishing to join.
Merchandiser of the Year - Public
The Northern Ohio PGA Merchandiser of the Year Award is designed to recognize those PGA Professionals who have excelled as business persons/ merchandisers in the promotion of golf. The Northern Ohio PGA honors PGA Professionals in two categories: Private and Public facilities.
One visit to the pro shop at Windmill Lakes Golf Course is all it takes to understand why Herb Page is the NOPGA Merchandiser of the Year for public sales. His 4,950-square foot facility carries everything a golfer needs, with an amazingly wide variety of brands to choose from. Patrons can be fitted for clubs as well as shoes. Page adheres to the philosophy of giving the consumer great selection, competitive pricing and great service. Customers must be treated with respect and dignity. Seldom is there a wait to be assisted as the shop is well staffed as well as well stocked. Page tells his staff "Mark it down, move it out, and don't fall in love with the merchandise!" Page credits the relationships that he has built with vendors, customers, and other PGA Professionals over the last 47 years with why Windmill Lakes is so successful.

Operating a pro shop at a private club takes imagination, intuition, vision, savviness and a whole lot of work. Tim Perin has used all those traits to serve the members at Lakewood Country Club for the last eleven years. His goals include giving the members a wide variety of merchandise to choose from as he carries more than 20 different brands annually. Yet, he has not been afraid to introduce different brands to the rotation while retaining the brands the members like. He wants his members to feel welcome and have positive, enjoyable experiences with each visit. He strives to give members a reason to visit the shop, offering promotional events and appealing staging of all products.
Sales Representative - Hard Goods
She is a former collegiate champion, former LPGA Tour member, former collegiate coach and according to several members of the Northern Ohio PGA a terrific sales person. Combine that with the fact that she is a female and it completes the formula. Who better to sell ultra-light, forgiving clubs designed to enhance those players with moderate swing speeds than Jenny Gleason and that is why she has been named recipient of the hard goods Sales Rep of the Year. Gleason, a native of Clearwater, Fla., was a late-starter in the game of golf and is selling a relatively new product. She was a relative newcomer to Northeast Ohio. She did not pick up a club until high school and she did not take up residence in the area until becoming an assistant coach at Kent State in 2019 after an earlier coaching stop at Texas State. She joined XXIO in 2022. She has made an impact at every stop along the way. She won three times as a player at UNC-Greensboro. She won numerous times on LPGA satellite tours. KSU won four straight Mid-American Conference titles during her tenure. In her second year with XXIO she was named XXIO’s Regional Salesperson of the Year. One of the traits that make her so effective is that she understands the role of a head golf professional and what it takes to run a pro shop. Her Demo Days are highly organized, and her fitting skills are on spot. Put it all together and it’s easy to see why she has been chosen as the NOPGA’s hard goods Sales Rep of the Year.

This award acknowledges special recognition to a PGA Golf Professional, who personally displays outstanding integrity, character and leadership through a commitment to mentoring and making significant impacts on the careers of fellow professionals to help them maximize their career potential and become the PGA member that they aspire to be. Dale Davis jumped right into that when he was appointed to the NOPGA Board of Directors and Chairman of the Associate Jumpstart Committee. The specific purpose of that committee is to assist Level 1 associates to accelerate through the program. Dale facilitated a Mentor Guide with committee member Averi Hanna, PGA to help associates/affiliates arrange meetings with supervising professionals, who can see what requirements are required for each associate, how help can be offered and establish how much time is needed to complete each exercise. Currently there are several PGA Associates working towards membership at Firestone. Weekly meetings are held to review their progress and offer help and guidance regarding a myriad of duties/responsibilities. He has addressed approximately 100 professionals and general managers on standard operating procedures. As the Director of Golf he leads by example and in his three years he has been able to retain five managers and grow the staff. He also understands the importance of FCC’s role in relation to golf in Ohio.
This award recognizes the model educator of PGA Professionals and is designed to give special recognition to an individual PGA Professional for outstanding and continuing contributions to professional education. Todd Casabella has given lessons to 22 Section members and associates in the last six years. Since 2011 he has been a volunteer instructor at the Northeast Ohio Golf Show, the Ohio Girls Golf Foundation, the Bridgestone National Performance Center and the Junior Camp Utopia at Sand Ridge Golf Club. He has been recognized by GOLF Magazine, Golf Digest, the Golf Channel, The Golf Zone with Jimmy Hanlin and numerous other organizations. He has been a member of the Section’s Education Committee since 2015 and beginning in 2018 he continued and expanded the Teaching Roundtables, monthly get togethers during the winter months to explore ideas and share best practices among professionals in the section. This marks the third time Casabella has been named Professional Development Award winner.
Jason Carbone has made a career of teaching people at all levels, from beginners to novices to some of the top professionals in the world. He has been named teacher of the year in several states while working at clubs such as the Inverness Club, Baltusrol Golf Club, Muirfield Golf Club, Woodland Country Club, the Jim McLean Golf School and, of course, Canterbury Golf Club since 2022. He has consulted and worked with such people as Jack Nicklaus, Ryan Armour, Len Mattiace, Chris Wilson, Cristie Kerr, Casey Martin, Jin Park, Chris Smith, Andrew Buckle and Mhairi McKay. He has been acknowledged by Golf Digest and GOLF Magazine as one of the top teachers in the country and has written numerous articles for both publications since 2003. He has mentored to various degrees 16 of the teachers on Golf Digest’s Best Young Teachers List. He has spoken at coaching summits in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Last winter other teachers voted him to Golf Digest’s 50 Best Teachers list. Since returning to Northeast Ohio, he has expanded the teaching programs at Canterbury to include a Ladies Clinic Series, a program for more advanced instruction and brought in a junior golf specialist to conduct junior clinics. He has routinely offered free clinics to ladies, seniors and juniors at all his teaching stops. He feels his greatest accomplishment is coaching Armour, Wilson, Kimberly Kim, Kevin Foley and Emily Bastel to full status on various PGA and LPGA Tours. A native Clevelander, Carbone attended Gilmour Academy and Bowling Green State University.
The Northern Ohio PGA Assistant Professional of the Year Award is the highest honor the Section can bestow on a working Assistant Golf Professional whose total contributions to the game best exemplify the complete PGA Professional. This award embraces a wide range of services executed by the Assistant Golf Professional such as outstanding leadership abilities, strong moral character, and outstanding service to the Association and the game of golf.
For the last five seasons and since his first day at Shady Hollow Country Club Ian Haidle has made it a mission to serve anyone connected to the game of golf. He has gone above and beyond to ensure club members are satisfied with their experience at Shady Hollow and is always willing to help. He routinely asks questions to see where improvements can be made. The tournament operation at Shady has taken a huge leap forward with his involvement, hard work and forward thinking. Through his efforts the participation in the club’s junior golf camps has increased nearly 400 percent in four years. He loves teaching the game and has always looked forward to giving lessons to help golfers reach their maximum potential. He has volunteered to help the teams at his alma mater, Walsh University, and has done the same for individuals – as well as the teams -- at Jackson High School. Over the last two years he has participated in the Birdies & Charity event and currently is a member of the inaugural NOPGA Lead Committee. He plays as many Section events as his schedule allows and has served as a rules official at high school sectional tournaments held in Stark County.

A true golf professional in every aspect, Michael Spiech has been the face of Tippecanoe Country Club for the last 21 years. Teacher, mentor, marketer, merchandiser, supporter, fund-raiser, tournament manager, event coordinator and representative. There isn’t anything he hasn’t touched related to the club and beyond. Self-driven and consistently high performing he was deftly instrumental in Tippecanoe’s ownership transition, and many tied their investment to Michael remaining as head professional. As a result of his involvement club membership has grown from 192 to 275 with a waiting list. Throughout his career he has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the NOPGA, the Section’s Foundation for Junior Golf and the Youngstown State golf teams.
Rob Moss is one of the most decorated players in the Northern Ohio Section of the Professional Golfers Association of America. Over his storied 33-year career, Moss has earned a reputation as a perennial winner, a true champion, and above all, a gentleman.
A graduate of Kent State University with a degree in business, Moss turned professional in 1991 and embarked on an international golf career. He competed on the Asian and South American Tours (1994-1998) and the Nike Tour (now Korn Ferry Tour) in 1996 and 2000 before joining the Northern Ohio PGA in 2001.
Moss’s professional journey took him to Lakewood Country Club as an assistant professional, then to Elyria Country Club as head professional in 2005, before he assumed the same role at Pepper Pike Club in 2009, a position he continues to hold with distinction.
Throughout his career, Moss has claimed nearly every major NOPGA honor:
Three-time Ohio Open Champion
Five-time NOPGA Section Champion
Two-time Mitchell-Haskell Tour Champion
Three-time Denny Shute Match Play Champion
Five-time NOPGA Player of the Year
Before his professional career, Moss won the Ohio Amateur in 1989, cementing his legacy as one of Ohio’s most decorated players. He has represented the Northern Ohio PGA 19 times in the Ohio Cup Matches against the Southern Ohio PGA.
Moss’s contributions go beyond the golf course. Twice awarded the Bill Strausbaugh Award, he has been recognized for his outstanding integrity and commitment to mentoring fellow PGA professionals.
Rob Moss is not just a seven-time Hall of Famer he is a beacon of sportsmanship and humility. He attributes his character to his upbringing by his parents, Ralph and Bertie Moss, who instilled in him the values of respect, positivity, and kindness.
When not on the course, Moss is devoted to his wife of 26 years, Darci, and their three children, Tyler, Ben, and Will. He credits mentors such as Bob Barto, Herb Page, and Tom Waitrovich for shaping his professional journey and acknowledges the unwavering support of the Pepper Pike Club community.
Through golf, Moss has experienced the world, traveling to places like Calcutta, Tokyo, and Seoul, and visiting Mother Teresa’s Orphanage. Yet, he remains grounded, deeply appreciative of the relationships and blessings the game has brought him.
Rob Moss embodies the ideal PGA professional a champion, mentor, and gentleman.
“Receiving this award means the world to me as an assistant golf professional. It represents not just a recognition of skill, but the countless hours of practice, dedication and passion that have shaped me into the golf professional I am today. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Steve Mulcahy, who offered me my first job in this business, and to Gregg Matthus, who took a chance on a young kid to be his right-hand man. I am truly grateful to both for being the absolute best role models I could have ever hoped for.” - Ian Haidle
“I would like to thank the NOPGA and especially the Selection Committee, not just for this award but for all the great things they do and for recognizing all the great deserving professionals in Northern Ohio. I must share this with my talented staff, which does a tremendous job in our shop. They are all empowered to purchase, display and sell and they do a great job. Above all, however, I would like to share this with my late partner, Dr. Emilio Ferrara and his family. For the last 27 years they have allowed me and enabled me to start and grow our business. I am very fortunate to have had them by my side all this time.” - Herb Page, PGA
“This amazing honor makes me think about all the people that went out of their way to help me when I started in this Section 27 years ago. Those people are what makes the NOPGA and PGA such special organizations. The amount of gratitude I feel for those individuals cannot be put into words.” - Jason Carbone, PGA
I can’t think of a greater professional honor than to be recognized by your peers. I have been very fortunate to have so many people help me with my career that I feel a responsibility to give back. This makes receiving the Professional Development Award very fulfilling and confirms I am starting that work. I know I have many years ahead to continue to do what I can to help others. I am very thankful to my fellow PGA Members and promise to do my best to continually give where and to whom I can.”Todd Casabella, PGA
“It is an honor to be recognized by your peers and this is really a team award for Lakewood Country Club even though it has my name on it. There are many people who deserve credit for making this possible, including our merchandise manager, assistant professionals, general manager and controller. Without our team we would not have the freedom to be creative and attempt new things to elevate the experience of visiting our shop.” - Tim Perin, PGA
“I’m incredibly honored to receive the 2024 Player Development Award. It feels great to be recognized by my peers for something I truly love, which is to help players improve their game. Developing programs and coaching is a long-term commitment and it’s rewarding to see the impact it can have. I’m grateful for this acknowledgment and excited to keep finding new ways to grow the game.” - Drew Pierson, PGA
“I am overwhelmed with gratitude to be receiving this award as it is a tremendous honor. I think it reflects my dedication to the golf industry and the support of the local PGA community. It signifies my commitment to excellence in service, building lasting relationships and contributing to the growth of the game. I am truly grateful and thank the Northern Ohio PGA and its members for selecting me.” - Jenny Gleason
“Since I started at Holderness & Bourne, excellence in service has been one of the core tenants of the company. To be recognized for this award by a panel of professionals is truly an honor. Thank you to all our customers and the NOPGA for your support of me and H&B.” - Andrew Bailey
“I am honored to be selected as the 2024 Patriot Award winner. Being able to give back to a Veteran through the game of golf seems so minor to what they have given us. Each time we have a group from the Veterans Hospital come in, or I’m working with a brand-new golfer with PGA HOPE, the gratitude they show and how much of an impact it can make in their day is why I continue to work with our Veterans.” - Erin Craig, PGA
“I am honored to receive this award and winning for the third time in three decades defines my passion for junior golf. Developing successful junior golfers is a lifetime mentoring commitment of mine. It’s all made easier by the PGA of America Youth Programs that I have participated in. I’d like to thank all my junior golfers and their families. With their support I get to be called a PGA Game Changer. And remember, junior golfers don’t care what you know until they know you care.” - Jimmy Beers, PGA
“I am honored to be recognized as the recipient of the Bill Strausbaugh award for the Northern Ohio Section. I am grateful to be where I am today because of the professionals who have mentored me along the way. Thank you to Firestone Country Club and our incredible team, working at a club so rich in history and tradition is truly a dream come true. The Northern Ohio PGA professionals and staff have been very welcoming to me and my family since coming to Ohio. Allowing me the opportunity to serve on the NOPGA Board and lead the Associate Jumpstart Committee has been a fantastic way to give back to aspiring golf professionals. I look forward to continuing to empower others to reach their goals and achieve their dreams.” - Dale Davis, PGA
“I am truly grateful to receive this most prestigious award. Serving as a PGA Head Professional for 41 years is an honor. Our role as PGA members is to grow the game of golf and that commitment is a core belief that I consider in all my decisions. My service to the Section through two terms on the board and multiple fund-raising efforts supporting both the NOPGA and collegiate golf furthers the growth and support of golf. I cannot thank my current and former team, the members at Tippecanoe and my wife and family for their continued support and encouragement. Thank you to the NOPGA employees for their continued efforts in making this a great Section.”
Michael Spiech, PGA - Golf Professional of the Year
I am very honored and humbled to be selected for the Hall-of-Fame and be included with all the great PGA Professionals who have been leaders and have paved the way for all of us. You never receive an honor like this on your own and I am looking forward to sharing this with my family and friends. This is truly a great honor.”
