IMPACT REPORT

I had the fortunate opportunity to join the PGA HOPE program this past spring at Washington Park Golf Course. Being an athlete throughout my life and having played college baseball, my activity levels suffered after my combat injury in Iraq due to persistent pain and limited mobility in my right shoulder, despite undergoing five surgeries. I wanted to extend my heartfelt gratitude for the PGA HOPE program... It has rekindled my love for sports and helped me overcome physical limitations, adding a fulfilling chapter to my life. The Northern Ohio PGA Section Foundation falls under the direction of the Northern Ohio Section of the PGA of America, a non-profit organization of over 440 men and women PGA Professionals serving as experts in business and the game of golf.

It is an exciting time for the game of golf, especially in Northern Ohio, where I recently became the President of our Northern Ohio PGA Section. I fell in love with the golf business, which drove me to become a PGA of America Golf Professional, and throughout my past five years serving on our Board of Directors, have seen firsthand the growth of the game and our foundation due to the dedication of our over 440 NOPGA Professionals and Associates. I am excited that through the tremendous effort of the NOPGA Foundation team, the number of individuals impacted through our foundation’s programming will continue to grow even further in 2024 and beyond. MEET OUR AMBASSADOR O

n June 3, 1996, Lashunda Lee marched across the stage at Shaw High School in East Cleveland and officially graduated from high school. Ten days later she was marching in the United States Army and eventually becoming a 92G Food Service Specialist. “I was in the ROTC program at Shaw for four years,” Lee said recently while sitting in the Powell Educational Building at Clearview Golf Course in East Canton. “So, I decided to go into the service after graduating.” Little did Lee – or anyone else for that matter – realize that her decision to enlist all those years ago would indirectly lead to her becoming a PGA HOPE Ambassador for the Northern Ohio Section of the Professional Golfers Association of America. PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) is the flagship military program of the Northern Ohio PGA Section Foundation. Its mission is to introduce and teach golf to our nation’s veterans and first responders with an emphasis on enhancing their physical, mental, social and emotional well-being. Over the years a series of injuries, trauma, and surgeries left Lee physically weakened, mentally strained and in need of rehabilitation. Towards the end of physical therapy, her therapist advised her to perform exercises that would help her range of motion. “I tried to think of ways to continue my therapy and I was driving down the street one day and I saw this man had a whole bunch of golf bags (with a few clubs) lined up on his front lawn and he was selling them,” she recalled. “So, I stopped and bought a 20 dollar golf bag and clubs.” he started free-swinging those clubs in an empty lot across from her residence in the S Fairfax neighborhood of Cleveland. A short time later she added balls to the process. It became a source of therapy, both physical and emotional. “ For the hour or so that I was out there I noticed that swinging those clubs at those balls took my mind off everything,” she said. “All I wanted to see was to see my ball go straight and high. I kept working at it and the ball would go straight and high. I whipped out my phone and video called my mom and sister and they were laughing at me hitting those balls in the empty field. I responded ‘Don’t laugh, I may play for the PGA one day.’ After an hour or so I went inside and turned on the television and there was Trevor talking about the PGA HOPE.” hat would be Trevor Hazen, PGA, one of several PGA professionals at the Union T Performance Centre, Home of the Jim Wise Golf Academy at Medina Country Club. At the time Hazen worked at The Turn, the facility at North Olmsted Golf Club that serves people with physical disabilities through the game of golf. he attended one of Hazen’s PGA HOPE sessions at The Turn in 2022 and was hooked. S Lashunda immediately entered the PGA HOPE program and has never looked back. “I didn’t know what to expect when signing up for the PGA HOPE Program. Will I be the only woman? Will there be any triggers? Or how will the instructors react if I make a mistake?” she said about her decision to investigate PGA HOPE. “I was afraid to get involved. But I didn’t want to remain in that little shell either and that’s why I decided to see what it was all about. So, a friend of mine agreed to go with me to the first PGA HOPE class I went to and she has gone every time.” Her repeated attendance has brought comfort and the knowledge that help is out there. “PGA HOPE is a safe place,” she said. “It is a safe place for women.” It also left her with a clear understanding of what injured/abused/disabled veterans experience. “I didn’t know anything about golf and nothing about the PGA HOPE program,” she said. “But what I learned right away is that it has a love and passion for veterans and the game of golf. The level of professionalism is felt right away as soon as you walk in. The instructors are friendly and very understanding.” I n October, Lee attended National Golf and Wellness Week in Washington, D.C. While there she was given the opportunity to play 18 holes at Congressional Country Club. As the PGA HOPE Ambassador, Lee will spread the word of the organization, recruit new Veterans into the program, and encourage them to take advantage of all that is offered through the foundation. -Tim Rogers, Media Consultant

W

ith the sky colored a dreary gray, 40 Veterans assembled just outside the stately Portage Country Club clubhouse, accompanied by NOPGA professionals – team captains if you will — in preparation of playing a scramble over the Portage back nine. Continuing professional golf’s tradition of giving back to the community, the NOPGA Section Foundation conducted its inaugural PGA HOPE Cup on Wednesday, September 27 at Portage Country Club. The event was a day of celebration for the Northern Ohio veterans – PGA HOPE graduates – who have participated in the program. Ten fivesomes played a scramble on the back nine at Portage followed by a luncheon and awards ceremony. This was a celebration and their faces said they were happy to be there. They were going to have a good time, come hail or high water. And, in the end, a grand time was had by all.

The 2023 Northern Ohio PGA HOPE Cup Champions from Team Shawnee Hills: Ben Ladaika, Steve Canfil, Mark Luciano, Marvin DeScott, Herman Friedman

“It was all my guys talked about,” said Windmill Lakes Golf Club Professional Dan Dauk, who conducted three PGA HOPE events last summer and captained a team from PGA HOPE: Macedonia. “They all loved it and they were all grateful to be there. They said it over and over. I know I had a great time.” At the luncheon at the end of the day, Renee Powell addressed the group: “Thank you all for your service to our nation,” said Powell, who visited Vietnam in 1971 to support U.S. troops through the USO. “If it weren’t for you, we couldn’t live the way we do. We would not be able to live in safety and we couldn’t live in freedom. My heart goes out to all of you and I can’t thank you enough.”

PGA Master Professional Barry Friedman was named the 2023 Northern Ohio PGA Patriot Award Winner for his work with Folds of Honor and PGA HOPE, hosting the only 8-week program in the section!

pga PROFESSIONALS GROWING THE GAME OF GOLF IN NORTHERN OHIO

PGA HOPE is a great way to give back to Veterans who sacrifice everything for us and our freedom. Sharing the game with patriots and giving Veterans an outlet is the least we can do as PGA Professionals. We’re here to help and give opportunity. -brian tolnar, pga

The privilege of teaching our heroes through the Northern Ohio PGA HOPE Program has been so much more than golf to all involved and I know it changed lives for the better. In my 30 years of teaching golf, I have never enjoyed my time with a group of people that I admired and respected more. —DAN DAUK, PGA

The clubs definitely helped our team this season. Two of our sophomore girls received clubs and were a huge part of our team’s success. Each improved their scoring average by over 10 strokes from last year. The two-hour golf lesson and individual attention from Dan Dauk made such a difference…they truly felt special and they are developing a love for the game of golf. This has certainly made a difference in the development of our program!

PGA works fellowship my pga works fellowship experience By Hastha Rajendran I embarked on my PGA WORKS Fellowship in mid-June, just in time for the season of Junior Tours. The transition was swift, and the learning curve steep, but I can't express enough gratitude for the unwavering support and guidance from my incredible team. This opportunity has been nothing short of amazing, allowing me to witness the meticulous planning and hard work that goes into creating unforgettable golf events. This sport is all about meeting new people and making connections, and I can't thank everyone enough for being so kind and welcoming. I've had the privilege of forging meaningful relationships, and I will never forget the unconditional support I've received from my entire staff and the section members. I now have a profound appreciation for the dedicated individuals who work tirelessly behind the scenes, and I owe it all to this fellowship that provided me with a unique peek into the industry. Throughout my time, I've been fortunate to participate in various aspects of the golf world, including PGA HOPE, Section Events, Majors, Drive, Chip and Putt competitions, and formal meetings. These experiences have been instrumental in preparing me for a future fulltime role in the industry. One aspect that truly resonates with me is the PGA's commitment to diversity within the golf industry, specifically its efforts to encourage women to participate and grow alongside their male counterparts. I extend my heartfelt thanks to the Northern Ohio PGA Section Staff and the PGA of America for their unwavering support and for making me feel like an integral part of their team. This fellowship has been an incredible journey, providing me with a wealth of knowledge and experiences that will undoubtedly shape my career in the golf industry. I look forward to what the future holds, and I'm grateful for the opportunities and warm welcome I've received on this exciting path.

JUNIOR GOLF birdie club The Birdie Club is a player performance-based fundraising drive to get Junior Tour members involved in community outreach. Eighteen Junior Tour members participated in 2023 and gained a greater sense of pride and accomplishment beyond just their performance during Junior Tour events. Junior Tour members asked family, friends, and neighbors for pledges throughout the Junior Tour season to support the NOPGA Section Foundation and its mission. Donors pledged a dollar amount per birdie or simply donated a flat donation. The winner of the 2023 Birdie Club was nine-year-old Preston Tolnar who raised over $1,700. In total, the 2023 Birdie Club participants earned over $5,000 for the Section Foundation.

I joined the NOPGA Birdie Club because I wanted to help people. I want others to have clubs and be able to play golf too. -PRESTON TOLNAR, AGE 9

girls golf night Girls Golf Night was a great chance to meet young juniors who have a passion for the game. It also allowed us working in the golf industry the chance to talk to them about all opportunities that are available in golf. The game has so much to offer these young juniors.

-MEGHANN GLASS-STEM, PGA

Girls Golf Night was held at The Golf Dome as a way to get more girls thinking about a career in golf. Thirty-two girls between the ages of 8-18 attended the event and listened to Women PGA Professionals, OGGF Representatives, Sales Representatives, Northern Ohio Golf Association staff, and Northern Ohio PGA Staff discuss how they got started in the golf industry and their careers to get girls thinking about a possible career in golf. This was coupled with contests and games with prizes (Long Drive, Closest to the Pin, Putting Course, etc.).

JUNIOR TOUR FINANCIAL AID The Northern Ohio PGA Section Foundation awarded $6,980 to financial aid recipients on the NOPGA Junior Tour to help reduce the cost to families for tournament entries and membership. Scott Mawaka, Fleet Response CEO and President, is responsible for providing donations for financial aid in the past four seasons. The Section Foundation purchased Junior Tour Memberships for 15 juniors as well as 91 rounds of tournament golf. Some families in need of financial aid fell onto hard times and had medical issues with a parent and unemployment that caused their need for financial aid. This financial assistance program allows juniors who may not have otherwise been able to afford golf, to play in junior events, yet another way that the Northern Ohio PGA is growing the game of golf.

FIRESTONE JUNIOR CUP The Northern Ohio PGA hosted the Firestone Junior Cup at Firestone Country Club’s Fazio Course for the third year in a row in conjunction with the Kaulig Companies Championship. Eight teams from around Northern Ohio were invited to attend a day of activities, starting with a short game clinic sponsored by the JM Smucker Company, with Kaulig Companies Championship participant and 10-time professional champion, Richard Green. Green hit shots from around the 18th green of the Fazio Course, instructing the juniors on his approach to hitting different chips and pitches and answering questions. At the end of the day, the low aggregate score from the front nine would compete against the low aggregate score on the back nine in a shootout. On the front nine, Jimmy Beers Golf shot 110 with the team of Ellie Gonzalez-Ribble and Aris Asher leading the way at 35 (-1). On the back nine, Westfield Country Club shot 111 with the team of Hamilton Miller and John Kaczka shooting the low round of the day at 31 (-5). With these scores, the two teams qualified for the post-round shootout to determine a winner. All players from each team participated in the shootout, alternating shots from Jimmy Beers Golf and Westfield. The shot was 55-yards from just beyond the penalty area on hole 18 onto a front pin location. In the final shot of the shootout, Ellie Gonzalez-Ribble hit a wedge to within tap-in range to take home the victory for Jimmy Beers Golf.

JUNIOR OHIO CUP T

he inaugural Junior Ohio Cup, a Ryder Cup-style event featuring some of the top junior golfers in Ohio, was played at Westfield Country Club, October 28-29. Teams from the Northern Ohio Section and the Southern Ohio Section of the Professional Golfers Association of America were outfitted with Cobra-Puma uniforms and golf bags and competed on the South Course in Four-Ball (aka Best-Ball) and singles matches. The teams were comprised of eight boys and eight girls who qualified through their respective PGA Junior Tour programs, either by winning their respective PGA Junior Championship or through their status on their Player-of-the-Year points lists. The Northern Ohio team was captained by PGA Professional Drew Pierson, PGA, the owner/operator of The Clubhouse Cleveland, a state-of-the-art indoor performance facility located in Beachwood and Co-Chair of the Junior Golf Committee while sitting on the Northern Ohio PGA Board of Directors.

It seemed inconceivable that the members of the Northern Ohio PGA team could improve on – or even equal – their first day performance when the second day of the inaugural Junior Ohio Cup began on Sunday, October 29th, on the South Course of Westfield Country Club. After all, the weather on Sunday was significantly worse than on Saturday when the NOPGA built a commanding lead against the SOPGA with some stellar play during the Four Ball competition. Yet, Day II Singles turned out to be just as good – if not better – than Day I Four Ball and it led the NOPGA to a decisive 16-8 victory in an event that drew rave reviews from both teams. The girls stole the show both days as they produced 11.5 of the team’s 16 points. In the 12 matches – four in Saturday’s Four Ball and eight in Sunday’s singles – the girls went 11-0-1. If that’s not dominance then Annika Sorenstam was a flash in the pan. Despite temperatures falling faster than the Stock Market crash on the same weekend 94 years prior, the NOPGA girls were astounding. Brooklyn Millard (Aurora), Gracyn Vidovic (Aurora), Serena Wu (Solon), Emily Burling (Hudson) and Kristina Chill (Columbia Station) combined to win 18 of their first 25 holes to quickly eliminate any anxiety that might have existed.

NORTHERN OHIO 16 SOUTHERN OHIO 8 CAPTAIN DREW PIERSON, PGA CAPTAIN OF THE INAUGURAL JUNIOR OHIO CUP

The Junior Ohio Cup was an extraordinary event which rewarded our top performing juniors for their exceptional play in 2023. The buzz it created should propel the event forward for years to come.

“About the only thing that could have gone better was the weather,” said NOPGA Captain Drew Pierson. “It’s not easy playing in this stuff and the kids all performed great. They all seemed to let it roll off their shoulders. They kept their heads in the game and didn’t let it distract them. They didn’t make it a disadvantage for them.” While giving credit to each of his players, Pierson felt Brooklyn Millard’s match – the first of the day – was a key. “To get Brooklyn out there and set the tone, that was a big plus,” said Pierson. The 17-year-old Millard, a senior at Aurora High School, won the Junior PGA Section Championship at Oberlin GC this summer. She needed just 11 holes to defeat Paige Weiss, who finished in a tie for fourth place in the recent Division II state tournament while playing for Westfall High in Williamsport, about 40 miles south of Columbus. “It was Brooklyn and then the rest followed,” he said. .

Eight of the team’s 16 players have at least one more year of high school. There were four juniors, three sophomores and one freshman. That could be a strong building block for 2024 and beyond. “I couldn’t be more proud of hosting the Inaugural Junior Ohio Cup and couldn’t think of a better ending to the story with our 16 juniors having their names engraved in history,” said Executive Director David Griffith. The 2023 event was made possible by Westfield Country Club Director of Golf Chad Kitzmiller, PGA, Cobra-Puma (Ian Price), and Gary & Kelly Trivisonno. The Junior Ohio Cup will rotate between sections, meaning the Southern Ohio PGA is set to host the 2024 Junior Ohio Cup.

It was one of the most fun golf experiences I’ve ever had! Every aspect of the event was amazing and having the honor to represent the NOPGA with such a great group of golfers is something I will never forget!

gracyn vidovic

My experience at the inaugural Junior Ohio Cup was something that I will always cherish. Being a part of a team with some of my closest friends that I have made it even more special. This was my first time playing in any type of match play event and I absolutely loved playing for something more than just myself.

A message from our executive director As we reflect on another remarkable year, the Northern Ohio PGA Section Foundation takes pride in the significant strides we’ve made in fulfilling our mission to advance golf in Northern Ohio. It is with great pleasure that I share a personal perspective on the profound impact of our initiatives. Growing up as a Club Walden member and participating in the Kenny Novak Memorial Tournament made my experience at this year’s Kenny Novak Scholarship Day truly exceptional. Attending the 40th Kenny Novak Junior Tour Championship only heightened its significance, and describing it as special is an understatement. Witnessing key individuals who played a pivotal role in establishing this championship return for the heartwarming pre-tournament dinner was a testament to the enduring legacy of this extraordinary tradition. My sincere appreciation goes out to the Club Walden members, Head Professional Mitch Camp, and Managing Partner Rob Rosencrans for their steadfast support spanning four decades, enabling these unforgettable moments. Their continued contributions have been instrumental in positively shaping the lives of thousands of junior golfers. These cherished moments, along with other impactful initiatives highlighted in this annual report, are actively contributing to positive change in communities throughout Northern Ohio. The commitment of individuals, organizations, and partners is truly making a difference in the lives of many. I want to express my sincere appreciation to each of you for allowing the Northern Ohio PGA Section Foundation to leverage the game of golf as a force for good. Together, we have the power to impact lives. As you perused the accomplishments outlined in this report for 2023, I hope you found inspiration in the positive outcomes we have achieved. In closing, we kindly ask for your continued support and consideration in your yearly giving. Your generosity enables us to build upon our successes and further enhance our impact on the community. Thank you for your unwavering support and commitment to our shared mission. Sincerely,

David Griffith Northern Ohio PGA Executive Director
