2024 Northern Ohio PGA Section Foundation Impact Report
Reflecting on an incredible year for the Northern Ohio PGA Foundation, I am grateful for our profound impact together in 2024 Your unwavering support has expanded our reach, fostering growth, inclusion, and excellence throughout the Northern Ohio golf community.
Our junior golf programs are empowering the next generation of players. We distributed 113 sets of golf clubs through the Clubs Fore Kids initiative, significantly increasing access to the game for young athletes. In serving our veterans, PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) programs remain a cornerstone of our Foundation’s mission This year, we provided over 570 hours of instruction to more than 300 veterans across 17 programs, including five new locations We also launched Operation Play Days, offering discounted golf opportunities that foster camaraderie and healing. These programs underscore the transformative power of golf to bring joy, connection, and recovery to our nation’s heroes.
The Foundation’s broader community impact has also reached new heights. Through the generous support of donors like you, we raised over $160,000 during the Smucker’s Birdies & Charity event and distributed $30,000 in grants to impactful local charities. By collaborating with schools, golf coaches, and allied organizations, we have deepened our commitment to inclusivity and expanded our programs to serve even more communities.
These achievements are a testament to the extraordinary generosity of our donors and the dedication of our PGA Professionals, who contribute their time and expertise to advancing the game of golf. As we look ahead, I am excited for the opportunities that lie before us. With your continued partnership, we will expand our reach, deepen our impact, and ensure that golf remains a force for good in Northern Ohio. Together, we are changing lives and growing the game we love

Studies show that regular golfers can live up to five years longer and experience improved mental health, with a 40% lower mortality rate compared to non-golfers. Programs like PGA HOPE and Clubs Fore Kids harness these benefits by providing veterans and youth with not only physical activity but also community, purpose, and a path to resilience making support for these initiatives a true investment in health and well-being.

- A United States Army Veteran
For many veterans, life after service can feel like an uphill battle an unfamiliar terrain filled with isolation, loss of purpose, and a longing for connection. PGA HOPE offers more than just an introduction to golf; it provides a lifeline. It’s a place where veterans walk onto the course and immediately feel seen, valued, and supported.
The familiar camaraderie they once had in service is rekindled not through rank or uniform, but through shared moments of perseverance, laughter, and healing.
A ROUND TO REMEMBER
A DAY OF GRATITUDE AT THE PGA HOPE CUP
For Vietnam veteran Tim Ekstrand, the PGA HOPE Cup was more than just a round of golf—it was a chance to create a lasting memory with his son Todd, the head professional at Barrington Golf Club. Tim, who has endured the effects of exposure to Agent Orange during his service, doesn’t play as often as he once did. But on this day, he stepped up on Glenmoor’s ninth hole and sank a 10foot birdie putt.
gratitude that PGA HOPE is all about The Ekstrands' bond was echoed in the words of featured guest speaker Jim Tressel, who captivated the crowd with stories of resilience, leadership, and appreciation. “An attitude of gratitude for the people who have served so we can be free and live the way we want to live,” Tressel shared. His words reminded everyone in attendance
What Is PGA HOPE?
"Great putt, Dad," Todd said with a smile as they made their way to the next hole. It was a simple exchange that captured the heart of the day: laughter, connection, and the kind of
PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) is a program that introduces military veterans to golf as a way to enhance their physical, mental, social, and emotional well-being. The free, six-to-eight-week adaptive golf clinics are led by PGA professionals trained in military cultural competency and adaptive coaching. The program doesn’t just teach golf—it builds community and helps veterans rediscover confidence and connection through the game. In Northern Ohio, over 300 Veterans were affected by PGA HOPE in 2024.

that the PGA HOPE Cup is more than a golf event it’s a celebration of service and strength The PGA HOPE Cup brought together 60 veterans from across Northeastern Ohio, capping off a year in which the Northern Ohio PGA Section Foundation conducted 17 PGA HOPE programs, impacting more than 300 veterans. The day was filled with powerful moments, from Jim Morrison’s 30-foot birdie putt that sent his team to the final shootout, to the celebration when Army veteran Tom Brown’s shot landed three feet from the pin to clinch the victory for his team.
For the Ekstrands, it wasn’t about the scores it was about the memories
Tim and Todd’s story is just one of many that remind us that the power of golf isn’t just in the game it’s in the friendships, family bonds, and moments of joy that it creates.
FROM THE COURSE TO THE COMMUNITY: PGA
HOPE BUILDS LASTING FRIENDSHIPS
63.8%
Percentage of Veterans who have found meaningful friendships through PGA HOPE in Northern Ohio according to a 2024 survey
In 2024, PGA HOPE strengthened its commitment to fostering connections among veterans by launching Operation Play Days a new program where veterans can play golf with fellow PGA HOPE graduates at area courses for a nominal fee.
This initiative was created in response to feedback from our participants, with survey results showing that 63.8% of veterans have formed meaningful friendships through PGA HOPE. By providing more opportunities to gather, socialize, and enjoy the game they love, we’re turning a supportive golf program into an enduring community
NOPGA Executive Director David Griffith knew that the Foundation had to find a way to keep veterans engaged even after the program ends: “We were seeing that Veterans would finish their 6-8 week program and either not know the next steps to take in their golf journey or find that it was easier to not play at all. Golf can be intimidating if you have never been on a course or inside a pro shop before. Play Days are an easy next step for a Veteran to continue playing with the comfort of being around other Veterans who are learning the game too.”
The NOPGA Section Foundation hosted 7 Operation Play Days in 2024 with 165 Veterans participating. After positive feedback from veterans, the program will continue in 2025 at private and public Northern Ohio courses.
The local PGA HOPE program and Northern Ohio Section came to me at a time when I was
looking for an activity that would fill me with a better sense of being. It reacquainted me with attributes that I began to doubt and connected me to new opportunities through PGA professionals and fellow veterans to build on not just golf skills, but confidence, comradery, perseverance, gratitude, adapting and so much more. I gained so much from this experience that I hope to advocate for and encourage others to experience it for themselves.

This allowed our program to have a full team for the 1st time in the 10 years that we have had a program. Prior to this year our largest number of participants was 10. This year we had a full squad of 12 that is allowed under the contract we sign at Mohawk Country Club This would not be possible without access to equipment

OVER $160,000 RAISED OVER 72 HOLES
On a beautiful day in Akron, nearly 70 NOPGA professionals stepped up at Portage Country Club for the fifth annual J M Smucker’s Birdies and Charity event. Some played 72 holes or more, pushing through exhaustion with one purpose: to grow golf in Northern Ohio.
With Smucker’s $10,000 donation leading the way, the event raised over $130,000. A Birdies & Charity event in the Toledo Chapter added $16,000 more, reflecting the ongoing generosity of the Northern Ohio golf community.
The atmosphere was filled with purpose and camaraderie “I couldn’t have been prouder of our Section and its staff,” said Portage head professional Adam Lewicki, who played 100 holes and helped contribute 31 birdies alongside Congress Lake’s Jason Nussbaum who made 38 birdies
In total, golfers recorded 840 birdies each one representing more than just a number on a scorecard. It symbolized hope for the community and proof that golf’s greatest tradition is giving back
When golf meets giving, the results are always extraordinary and the impact will be felt for years to come Proceeds from the event went to the NOPGA Section Foundation and 6 supporting charities including the Ohio Girls Golf Foundation, Greater Cleveland Junior Golf Scholarship Fund, The Turn, Ben Curtis Family Foundation (pictured above), Cleveland Clinic Challenge Golf, and Clearview Legacy Foundation

Hosted by the Northern Ohio PGA alongside the Kaulig Companies Championship, the event began with a rainshortened short game clinic led by Glenmoor Country Club’s Meg Glass-Stem, PGA, followed by a Q&A with Champions Tour’s Chris DiMarco, who encouraged the juniors to embrace the journey. On the course, Jimmy Beers Golf secured their second consecutive title after a thrilling shootout on the 18th hole, edging out Red Tail Golf Club in dramatic fashion when Mason Dillon hit a gamewinning shot from 83 yards.
This initiative reflects their ongoing commitment to making the game more inclusive and accessible for all.

NORTHERN OHIO DEFEATS SOUTHERN OHIO 16-8 AT COLUMBUS CC
COLUMBUS The Junior Ohio Cup is a Ryder Cupstyle event that pits the best junior golfers from the Northern Ohio PGA (NOPGA) against their counterparts from the Southern Ohio PGA (SOPGA)
The two-day competition features Fourball matches on the first day, followed by head-to-head singles matches on the second. It’s an intense test of skill, teamwork, and resilience.
Almost
Unheard Of
This year’s event at Columbus Country Club had it all perfect weather, fierce competition, and a storyline straight out of a movie. For the NOPGA team, the unexpected hero of the weekend was Gracyn Vidovic, who wasn’t even scheduled to play
Junior Golf Coordinator Haleigh Gray: a teammate had fallen ill, and Vidovic needed to suit up. Grabbing Gianna Reginelli’s clubs and uniform, she headed to the course and halved a backand-forth match with Kayelyn Miley after a clutch par on the final hole
Vidovic arrived Sunday morning as a spectator, ready to cheer on her teammates But breakfast at Bob Evans was interrupted by a call from NOPGA
“It’s almost unheard of,” said NOPGA Captain Drew Pierson. Vidovic’s resilience set the tone for the day, as the NOPGA secured a decisive 16-8 victory, winning 10 of the 16 singles matches and tying four others What started as a
NOPGADominatesinDay2SinglesMatches
deadlock at 4-4 after Saturday’s Fourball matches turned into a dominant display on Sunday
Key performances came from players like Aryan Ahlawat, Jackson Sommer, and Dexter James. Ahlawat, the NOPGA Player of the Year, sealed a 2and-1 victory with steady play over the final six holes. Sommer went on a tear with back-toback birdies, winning five straight holes en route to a 4-
and-3 victory. James, the youngest on the team, dazzled with seven birdies, turning a 3down deficit into a 4-and-2 win
On the girls' side, Emerson Glending controlled her match from start to finish for a 4-and-3 win Annelise Stencel continued her dominant Junior Ohio Cup career, winning 5-and-4 Serena Wu’s steady par play earned her a 2-and-1 victory, while Ellie Gonzalez-Ribble capitalized on
an early lead for another NOPGA point
In dramatic comebacks, Julia Van Bokkelen erased a threehole deficit by winning the final three holes to halve her match. Vidovic’s last-minute heroics reminded everyone that in team golf, every player and every point matters.

Foundation is a 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. It is a non-profit organization established to support the Northern Ohio community, with a focus on junior golf, education and scholarships, and charities in the area
The Northern Ohio PGA Section Foundation falls under the direction of the Northern Ohio Section of the PGA of America, a non-profit organization of over 480 men and women PGA Professionals serving as experts in business and the game of golf
As I look back on this past year, I am filled with gratitude for the generosity and support that make our mission possible Together, we’ve created meaningful opportunities that extend beyond the game of golf opportunities that touch lives and build a stronger community.
One of the moments that will stay with me forever happened during the PGA HOPE Cup at Glenmoor Country Club. As the morning sun rose over the course, a veteran approached me with tears in his eyes and said, “Thank you for allowing us to be here at such a beautiful place.” It was a simple, yet powerful reminder of the impact of our programs. For many of our veterans, this day was more than a chance to play golf it was a moment of dignity, belonging, and joy Moments like these remind us that our work is about so much more than the game; it’s about changing lives.
This year, thanks to your generosity, we expanded our reach in incredible ways Through PGA HOPE and Clubs Fore Kids, we introduced young golfers to the sport, supported high school girls’ teams with new equipment, and created life-changing opportunities for veterans These accomplishments would not have been possible without the dedicated support of our donors, PGA professionals, and partners who believe in our mission.
As we look to the future, I am excited about the lives we will continue to touch together On behalf of the entire Northern Ohio PGA Section Foundation, thank you for standing with us Your contributions remind us that golf is so much more than a sport it’s a powerful tool for connection, healing, and hope
