Thanks to events like the Ohio Open Pro-Am and Smucker's Birdies & Charity, the Northern Ohio PGA was able to award six grants to deserving charities in 2022. These charities help to positively impact individuals in Northern Ohio through the game of golf from providing golf lessons at a discounted rate (OGGF), allowing people to rehabilitate injuries from TBI to Parkinson's Disease through golf (The Turn and Cleveland-Clinic Akron General Challenge Golf), giving golf instruction to Veterans (PGA HOPE: Clearview), and giving under-privileged children food and bathroom essentials.

“There were three things that I enjoyed the most about instructing our PGA HOPE program at The Turn. The first was being able to introduce golf to a group of amazing people who could benefit from all that the game can offer. The second was seeing and experiencing the fellowship amongst the veterans and how much they enjoyed and supported each other. The third was seeing each and every veteran experience improvement and some level of success on the golf course. We cannot wait to host again this year!”
2022 NOPGA Patriot Award
Lashunda Lee, Army, first heard of PGA HOPE when she saw Trevor Hazen, PGA in an interview on television. She attended PGA HOPE at The Turn in North Olmsted using a set of clubs that a neighbor gave her. And now she's a fullfledged golfer with her own set of golf clubs.
PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) is the flagship military program of the Northern Ohio PGA Section Foundation. PGA HOPE introduces golf to Veterans to enhance their physical, mental, social, and emotional well-being. The Turn's PGA HOPE program is run by 2022 Northern Ohio PGA Patriot Award winner, Trevor Hazen, and Foundation Committee member, Erin Craig.
Trevor is "grateful to have had the opportunity to introduce the game to Lee. She was a true beginner who got hooked on week one and got more excited about the game each session. Through our PGA HOPE program she now has the skills and knowledge to play on-course. That training, along with her brand new clubs from the NOPGA Foundation, makes me confident that we will see Lee on the golf course in 2023 and beyond.”

Golf is a challenge. It’s not easy but it’s fun seeing that ball go. Getting out, learning the etiquette, the rules…the groove of it. It will have its ups and downs but you meet so many wonderful people on the courses that you play. Life can be very hard sometimes and we get caught up with a lot of it. We were not meant to go through this journey alone. Golf requires concentration and skill. It is a journey as well. Even as you work through it, there is camaraderie with the other veterans. I think many who try it will find that it is worth the effort.

I want to personally thank all of those who help contribute and donate to the JRPGA program. These words seem so small compared to the results of had personally created in my son Aaron. As a large football family, Aaron early was playing and had a brain injury, not allowing him to play further and ending his hopes of following in his older brothers footsteps. Golf would be an option but due to the cost along w/ his mom being diagnosed in 2017 with Stage 4 Cancer, he was going to struggle w learning the game and gaining enough valuable experience to possibly make the Green Golf Team. Then by God's Grace we found the JRPGA and the Blessing of possibly receiving Financial Assistance. We Did. Aaron did. And even right now on Jan 7th, he's out in the Golf course working to make Green Varsity Golf Team next Year. Without you all, NONE of this would be possible. As you may now be able to see why 'Thank You' just doesn't feel like enough for Aaron and my Family. So very Humbly and with Deep Deep Appreciation I say, THANK YOU.

The Fellowship has provided me with an incredible experience in the golf industry that I will never forget. The Fellowship and the Northern Ohio PGA Section allowed me to learn more about my desired field in tournament operations, as well allowing me to help grow the game for the youth in our section. After the fellowship, I will be pursuing my membership in the PGA to continue my journey within the golf industry.
