B.C. consumers, ranchers and producers will benefit from a new consolidated process for provincial meat inspection that continues to ensure food safety and animal welfare are top priorities.

Effective Dec. 1, 2020, all slaughter activity licensed under the Meat Inspection Regulation for Class, A, B, D and E meat slaughter licences will now be regulated under the Ministry of Agriculture. Previously, regional health authorities had responsibility for Class D and E licences.

“British Columbians want high-quality and trusted meat products raised by B.C. ranchers and farmers, and this change will help us meet that demand,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture. “We look forward to working collaboratively with all licence holders to ensure food safety and animal welfare requirements are being met, while continuing to support more opportunities for the production and sales of locally raised meat products in B.C.” This change was made in response to recent consultation, including the Select Standing Committee on Agriculture, Fish and Food’s report on local meat production and inspection.

Moving authority to the Ministry of Agriculture will provide benefits to consumers, existing licence holders and producers, including: creating new economic opportunities for communities throughout the province; strengthening the resiliency of B.C.’s food system; streamlining licensing to reduce the administrative burdens for animal slaughtering businesses; improving overall consistency in Class D and E administration throughout the province; and increasing frequency of inspections to ensure food safety and animal welfare is maintained.

100 years of memories for Dawson Creek-area Evans farm The year was 1920 when a family moved from Shrewsbury, England, to Doe River, just north of Dawson Creek.

A family farm was established and now 100 years later, Evans Farms is British Columbia’s latest recipient of the Century Farm Award.

“I want to thank the Evans family for sharing their story with us,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture. “Century Farm Awards celebrate British Columbia’s farming and ranching pioneers and congratulations are due to Evans Farms on being such a big part of the Peace region for the past 100 years.”

In the meantime, John and Lenore Albright acquired a quarter section of land for their farm in July 1920 after moving from Whitman, Wash. They brought with them their son Russell, and daughters Gladys and Mabel.

Lenore died in 1928, followed by her husband John in 1958. Russell started farming in the early 1930’s. He hired a housekeeper, Minnie Cornish, a divorced mother of four and the two married. They had three more children together, including a daughter, Marion.

In the 1970’s, Russell and Minnie moved to town and their original quarter section was sold. However, by this time, Bill Evans and Marion Albright married and began farming on the property, alongside Dorothy. Bill and Marion had four sons: William, Wade, Desmond and Glyn. All were raised on the farm in Doe River. In 1999, Bill and Marion’s son, Glyn, and his wife Stephanie came back to the farm, eventually buying seven more quarter sections of land, including the original quarter section of John and Lenore Albright.

“These two families I descend from have been closely intertwined since settling here in 1920,” said Glyn Evans. “As all pioneers did, they relied on each other as neighbors.

Minnie, my maternal grandmother, acted as midwife for the birth of my father. My mom and dad grew up just a half mile from each other. The farm still acts as an anchor to the family. My maternal uncles and cousins often visit, as do the cousins on the paternal side and my brothers and their children are on the farm daily.”

Today, Evans Farms is a cow-calf operation on more than 850 hectares (2,100 acres). The

Once they arrived from England, Benjamin and Ellen Holloway and their children, William, Cyril and Dorothy, started farming.

Three of their adult children, Alfred, George and Ethel, remained in England. Benjamin, Alfred and Cyril each filed on a quarter section of the farm property. In 1934, Dorothy married William Evans and they had two children, William (Bill) and Mona. The family owned cows and grew some grain crops. William passed away in 1947 and Dorothy continued to farm with her son Bill.

Canada’s National Organic Week is here

FLAX PRICES HOLD STRONG AS OILSEEDS RALLY (FarmLead.com, August 28, 2020) Grain markets are mixed, but the oilseeds complex continues to push higher, helping everything from flax prices to soy oil and soybeans.

Yesterday’s push higher by the oilseeds complex help corn and wheat prices as well, albeit the latter is largely focused on some production issues in Argentina right now.

Canada’s National Organic Week is the largest annual celebration of organic food, farming and products across the country. Hundreds of individual events showcase the benefits of organic agriculture and its positive impact on the environment. Organic represents a vibrant alternative food system and an alternative option for clothing, personal care and cleaning products.

While I will dig into the contributing factors for the oilseeds rally in a second, traders are also watching for some stormy weather over the next few days across North America.

More specifically, storm warnings for parts of the Midwest should help bring muchneeded rainfall, especially to Iowa – About ¼ of Iowa is currently in a state of severe drought, with another 6.5% in an extreme state of drought- the but the conditions could turn severe with hail and strong winds possible. Beyond today (and as the NOAA shows below), things are looking fairly wet over the next week, as Hurricane Laura peters out.

New U.S. Monetary Policy & Canada’s Government Debt Problem In outside market news, the U.S. Federal Reserve unanimously approved a new strategy yesterday that will change the Fed’s dual mandate of reducing unemployment and keeping inflation in check. This is largely a function of the lessons learned over the last few recessions, namely how “a robust Job market can be sustained without causing an outbreak of inflation,” said Fed Chairman, Jerome Powell.

In simpler terms, this means that the U.S. Federal Reserve won’t raise interest just because indicators are suggesting inflation will rise, but rather waiting for the actual data/evidence that inflation was meeting targets. In even simpler terms, because interest rates are already so low, there’s not many tools left to counteract recessions, and thus, the wait-and-see approach is likely going to be the norm. However, the likely result of such action is a devaluing of the U.S. Dollar. This will likely make U.S. goods (i.e. agricultural exports) more affordable to international buyers.

However, the asterisk to consider is that, because interest rates almost everywhere else are so low, we’re likely going to see even more central banks around the world employ this sort of tactic to let inflation creep up (instead of going into negative interest rate territory). As per reporting from Bloomberg, included in this list is the Bank of Canada, who recently admitted that they’re going to have to get creative to deal with “rising financial vulnerabilities at a time when it needs to support growth.”

However, even credit agencies have noticed the spending spree that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has gone on, and noted yesterday that further “negative rating action” is likely unless the government debt-to-GDP ratio (currently sitting above 120%) starts to trend the opposite direction. This means, unless the open chequebook is closed (or least begins to be limited), Canada will be the only G7 country in the world w/ aA+ credit rating (Reminder: they’re also the only the G7 country that has a AA+ rating, all others are AAA).

Soybean Exports, Prices Also Find Rare Rally Much like I’ve talked about canola prices in the Breakfast Brief this week and a rare rally near harvest time, help canola prices has been the soybean complex, which is seeing a bit of a rally of its own. Yesterday, we saw soybean prices rally nearly 20 cents/bushel in Chicago while soy oil prices climbed more than a full penny, helping bring canola prices on the futures board within spitting distance of the psychologically-significant $500 CAD/MT handle.

Helping the soy complex yesterday was some bullish soybean exports data, as the weekly USDA report showed new crop soybean exports sales above 1 MMT for the 6th consecutive week! Corn exports sale were also positive as the 1.18 MMT contracted last week is the third-largest new crop corn sale so far this year. As we flip the calendar into the 2020/21 crop year for U.S. corn and soybeans next week though, it’s very likely that the USDA has to drop its estimate for 2019/20 corn and soybean exports.

The higher expectations that the USDA once had for U.S. corn and soybean exports was largely influenced by larger purchasing from China. While such activity has garnered some headlines in the past few weeks, the reality is that the buying spree is far from being at the Phase One pace. Given the time of the year with harvest producing lower prices, it’s likely we should see more buying of U.S. soybean exports and other commodities by China. However, with some deteriorating crop conditions in the Midwest, soybean prices have a bit of a bullish story over the short-term (read: next few weeks).

Funding available to help alleviate food concerns of vulnerable Canadians As the result of the pandemic, many of the existing food supply chains have been disrupted, and with restaurants and other public venues closed or facing reduced traffic, much of the food items normally consumed in these venues has been left behind. The Surplus Food Rescue Program can help manage and redirect these existing surpluses to organizations addressing food insecurity and ensure that these surplus products reach Canada’s vulnerable populations.

The Program has two core objectives: Support organizations serving vulnerable populations to process surplus commodities and food that would otherwise be wasted and distribute them to populations in need.

Connect surplus food commodities to vulnerable populations and avoid food waste.

You can apply to the program if you are a for-profit or not-forprofit organization (industry groups, processors, distributors, food serving agencies, regional and municipal governments and agencies (can include schools or school boards).

Osteoarthritis and chronic pain in our pets Evany Forrest, DVM September is Animal Pain Awareness Month. Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common causes of chronic pain in pets- it is a progressive, degenerative disease process found in the joints of almost all types of animals, including humans. Studies have suggested that in North America up to 80% of dogs over age 8, and 90% of cats over age 10 have arthritic changes on x-rays. Managing the pain caused by arthritis is a very important part of supporting our pet’s well-being and quality of life, especially as they age What is Osteoarthritis?

OA begins with degeneration of the normal cartilage within the joint, which is commonly caused by injuries, repeated stresses (such as running on hard surfaces or playing fetch excessively), or inherited conformation defects that cause the pet’s joints to be poorly aligned. Pain from the roughness nd inflammation inside the joint causes the pet to use it less, and this leads to the weakening of the muscles, ligaments and tendons supporting that joint. Eventually the pet starts to shift more and more of its weight off that joint and uses other muscles/ tendons/ ligaments abnormally; this results in compensatory muscle soreness in other parts of the body.

Carrying that extra shifted weight on other limbs can cause the previously healthy legs to start having joint and soft tissue damage, resulting in a vicious cycle of pain and further joint disease. It is estimated that up to 66% of dogs, especially larger breeds, are eventually euthanized due to severe orthopedic and mobility problems rather than other medical issues.

Why do we worry about chronic pain in our pets?

Dogs, cats and other pets are an important part of many families, and seeing them in pain is always upsetting. Arthritis visibly diminishes our pet’s mobility and comfort, but long term chronic pain from any cause (arthritis, dental disease, disc disease, chronic ear infections etc) can result in other ill effects as well.

Cognitive brain functions such as memory, problem solving and learning new things are significantly decreased in dogs that suffer from long-term pain. Chronic pain can also teach the nervous system to become over-

reactive to everyday sensory experiences.

This can result in normal sensations like being held or stoked feeling unpleasant or painful to the pet. Controlling inflammation and pain with specific treatment protocols helps “unwind” the over-reactive nerves and let the pet go back to enjoying comfortable interactions with their owners.

How do you know if your pet has chronic pain?

There are lots of clues to pick up on that can alert us to the presence of chronic pain.

It is important to realize that animals with OA usually do not yelp or whine, even when they are in significant pain. You may start to notice your young dog limping or looking stiff after an intense game of fetch or play session with other dogs. Your older dog may be starting to “slow down”, take the stairs more slowly, and have less patience with other dogs who want to play. Often at night, pets will pace around the room, take more time to settle into bed, or shift positions frequently. Even subtle changes like seeming less excited about things they used to enjoy, sleeping more than usual or starting to lick their paws more often can indicate pain. Cats can be even more difficult to pick up on chronic pain- they are very good at hiding it. Often temperament changes are a clue, cats can seem grumpier and no longer seek out attention and stroking. They might hold their tail lower than they used to, avoid jumping up and down as often, or look like they groom themselves less. Cats may even start urinating and defecating outside of their litterbox if stepping up over the high sides starts to hurt.

What can we do to help?

It is important to seek out an accurate veterinary diagnosis, so making an appointment with your veterinarian to rule out other potential issues contributing to pain is wise before attempting to treat anything at home. Your vet can work with you to make a treatment and exercise plan that is best suited to your pet, and they may prescribe anti-inflammatory and pain medications to help control the joint inflammation. They can also advise you on appropriate dosages for beneficial joint support supplements like omega 3 fatty acids. However, there are also things you can do at home to help manage OA in pets that already have it, and minimize

risk factors in young pets that may be likely to develop arthritis in the future. The most effective thing you can do at home is manage your pet’s weight! Studies have shown that dogs who are consistently lean throughout their life have much better joint health, and their lifespan is on average up to 20 months longer than dogs who are always slightly overweight! Resisting their puppy-dog eyes is easily worth it to buy ourselves extra months or even years with them by our sides.

Regular daily exercise is also important.

Long walks, hikes, swimming, and other low impact exercises help keep joints healthy, comfortable and functional.

Although we cannot cure osteoarthritis, addressing it early and treating appropriately can slow down the disease progression and vastly improve our pet’s quality and length of life.

Beneficial Insects Hello! I hope everyone has been enjoying the nice weather lately!

This week we will be talking about beneficial insects. Some insects you may think are pests but in fact are helpful. I too have thought that about some of the insects we are covering today. This article will cover Ladybeetles, Lacewings and Carabids are just a few beneficials that work for you in your crops, gardens, and flower beds.

Ladybeetles, or more commonly known as Ladybugs.

The larvae of the Ladybeetle are what does most of the damage to the pest population, some research has shown that the larvae can eat between 60-100 aphids per day. Do not think that adult Ladybeetles contribute either; they continue to eat aphids, mealybugs, and other soft bodied pests at a similar rate. Another insect’s larvae that is known for eating similar soft bodied pests is the Lacewing. Adult Lacewings are a pale green insect with clear wings that resemble lace because of the vein structure in them. However, Lacewings are more commonly nocturnal and actively search for prey at night. The Lacewing larvae

are more active earlier in the season so they attack the earlier pests which can sometimes cause more damage to the plant. They have also been called the “Aphid Lion” because they are ferocious towards anything that is soft bodies and moves slow. The main prey for both these predators, the Ladybeetle and Lacewing is aphids.

The last insect to discuss that is a predator and not a pest is a Ground Beetle. As someone who is terrified of beetles, I have a hard time believing this, but it is true. They are the beetle that I am sure everyone saw running around earlier this summer.

There are almost 2000 species in North America! These Beetles are known to prey on caterpillars, cutworms, grasshopper eggs and other pests. In fact, I was able to witness firsthand these beetles eating the caterpillars that ate all the poplar leaves this spring!

The Municipal District of Greenview No. 16 is excited to host facilitator Corey Perry for a weekend of Stock Dog Training.

Corey has experience with Border Collies on many levels. He is a past winner of the World Stock Dog Championship as well as a previous judge at the Western Canadian Stock Dog Championship.

The Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC) invites proposals related to proof of concept research and clinical trials. The application deadline for this call is October 1, 2020 at 11:59 PM MT. With increased investment in research through the Canadian Beef Cattle Check-off, the BCRC has committed to provide research funding in two key areas that have previously had limited funding: Proof of Concept – proposals to help inform whether a concept is worth pursuing as a larger, more defined funding request Clinical Trials – proposals to validate practices or technologies that have been discovered through research projects and/or to facilitate the adaptation of technologies utilized in other sectors, commodities, or countries The BCRC has committed funding to short-term projects in these two areas, with a maximum of $50,000 per project regardless of duration.

Project duration should not exceed six months to one year unless a clear rationale can be provided demonstrating the need for a longer time frame.

The purpose of this call is to fund proof of concept research and clinical trials that will lead to the achievement of objectives in the Canadian Beef Research and Technology Transfer Strategy and the National Beef Strategy. Leveraging producer check-off funds allocated to approved projects with other industry or government cash contributions is encouraged but not required for this call.

Parade for Gordon Beck About four years ago I met an older gentleman while walking my dog, we instantly connected in our love for the legion and our passion for veterans. Fast forward four years and one of the days while I was visiting with Gordon, he broke my heart when he spoke and said to me, no one cares about us old vets anymore. My mind started racing. you see in the past, we had spoken and he beamed with pride of this memorial silhouette he designed in Innisfail. I jumped to what I could do. I ran to Innisfail, got the dimensions of the memorial and went to work.

one heck of a parade for Gordon. Right before more than 70 motorbikes and a dozen vehicles came around the corner I started videotaping.

I looked over at Gordon and asked him if he remembered telling me now one cares, he looked at me quizzically and I said well I have some veteran friends too and they all want to

meet you. And there started what turned into one of the best days of my life. The look of sheer bewilderment and pride filled not only gordons eyes but mine. You can’t imagine the site of 70 some veterans parking their bikes and shaking this man’s hand and saying thank you.

Over the time I have known Gordon, he has spoken of his life with pride, laughter and some tears. He has had a life that had him working up and down the coast of Vancouver Island, the western provinces and down in the bahamas. Gordon has been everything from a vacuum salesman, to business owner, to volunteer fireman, commercial diver and more.

Life hasn’t always been easy for Gordon. His father returned from France in WW1 and was caught in the middle of a gas attack. He was shipped home and the military said he wasn’t fit for duty. If only we knew then what we know about PTSD, it may have been different.

This has deeply contributed to Gordons passion for our veterans. He puts his thoughts to others who need help more than him. Still selfless and giving even after all these years.

This recent celebration had me canvassing businesses to get this memorial built in our local Field of Honor here in Lacombe. It is a glorious sight to see.

I contacted a veteran I know named Bear Lamont, told him my idea and off we went.

We then had just a couple more surprises for him. You see my friend Trevor Whelan brought his sidecar and they helped him in. He was marshalling his own parade. Watching him look upon the memorial with such awe and smiles made this beyond anything I could have ever hoped for.

Bear called me up to the memorial with Gordon. Here was a veteran thanking me and telling

me how proud he was of what I did for him. Can you imagine a veteran thanking me, no he is the one alongside other veteran in this country, that needs our thanks.

I am and will be forever grateful for this friendship that started with a dog and continues to grow everyday.

Connecting ranchers with research Participating ranchers have been recruited for this 3-year project that follows the Rancher Researcher Pilot that was initiated by the Alberta Beef, Forage and Grazing Centre (ABFGC) in 2017 and was completed in 2019.

The pilot’s goal was to address the gaps in the flow of information between ranchers and the scientific community. It provided 8 ranchers located in central and southern Alberta the opportunity to try out various innovations and technologies. It connected them with appropriate scientists and then evaluated the impact of those new practices on their operations.

Innovations used in the pilot included using drone technology to check cows, pastures and fences. Another innovation was DNA EnVigourHX herd management and DNA testing for sire and progeny performance.

Participants also tried sustainable pasture rejuvenation, paperless cow-calf and feedlot management software, a Bluetooth-enabled scale system, pasture management software, herd management software, nose-flap weaning of calves and sustainable watering sites. Some of these technologies worked well for the participating operations, some had limitations, and others had mixed results.

Twenty new operations have been recruited by applied research associations in the province, including Battle River Research Group, CARA, Foothills Forage and Grazing Association, Grey Wooded Forage Association, Gateway Research Organization, Lakeland Agricultural Research Association, Mackenzie Applied Research Association, North Peace Applied Research Association, and Peace Country Beef and Forage Association.

Westerlund says that one change moving from the pilot to this expansion is creating a more in-depth process to help the participant pick the innovations to be used over the next 3 years. It includes an interview to focus on finding the innovation that could have the most potential value and make the biggest impact to benefit their operation.

Participants are also provided an extensive list of experts in the innovation technologies, and the pilot producer contacts who have experience adopting and using the innovations they are considering.

This allows for a more robust evaluation and understanding of the challenges and benefits they might encounter by adopting the various innovations.

Each rancher has access to a maximum $2,000 to put towards the adoption of a technology new to their operation. The rancher needs to provide the necessary matching dollars – 50% for expense items or 80% for capital items.

As with the pilot, participating ranchers are encouraged to use AgriProfits or a similar economic analysis package. Baselines are collected at the beginning of the project, and the use of the new technology will be monitored. The impact on production and economic benchmarks will be tracked, and participating ranchers will have the opportunity to discuss those impacts with a consultant.

‘Looking at the big picture,’ says Westerlund, ‘we are enhancing the information flow so that producers are aware of some of the innovations that are going on. We’re making that connection so researchers are getting feedback, too. We can let them know if they are moving in the direction that would be of real value at the ranch level.’

Alberta Insect Pest Monitoring Network update Shelley Barkley, insect survey technologist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, is looking for wheat fields to survey for wheat midge and wheat stem sawfly.

The sawfly survey is done south of Highway 9 up to the south side of MD of Provost on the east side of the province. Both surveys are done after harvest with little disruption to the field. The midge survey is done anywhere wheat is grown in Alberta.

The team is looking for 2020 wheat fields adjacent to 2019 wheat fields or wheat on wheat - across the road or fence and also kitty corner.

Barkley will send participating producers their results in late November so management decisions can be made if needed.
