CN’s 2020-2021 Grain Plan, announcing that it set a new record by moving over 30 million metric tonnes (MMT) of grain from across Canada during the 2019-2020 crop year. CN also announced that it is prepared to move up to 7,600 bulk and processed hopper cars per week outside of winter, and up to 6,100 per week during winter in the upcoming crop year. Research in the Peace Region is looking at soil quality and profitability for farmers

Breakfast Brief AUGUST WASDE SUGGESTS BIG CROPS ON THE HORIZON (FarmLead.com, August1 4, 2020) Grain markets this morning are mixed as the complex continues to digest the August WASDE report and recent, large export sales data. Canola prices continue to face pressure from an appreciating Canadian Dollar and what looks to be a big crop in Canada. Going into Wednesday’s August WASDE report from the USDA, I was fairly skeptical about the reactions we were going to get from grain markets. That said, despite some record yields and, thus, bearish production data, grain markets have been able to rally a bit, but that might have more to do with the recent export sales than anything else.

North Peace Applied Research Association (NPARA) is now in the third and final year of trials for its two research projects – Annual Cover Crop Mixes and Intercropping.

More specifically, the USDA announced yesterday in their weekly export sales report that, last week, 3.4 MMT of soybeans were bought, including 1.71 MMT by China. This is the largest one-week purchase by the People’s Republic of US soybeans since November 2016, but it makes sense, since, up until this week’s rally, U.S. soybean prices at a port position were about $30 USD/MT cheaper than Brazil, as reported by Allendale. Karen Braun of Reuters notes that, with nearly 18 MMT of new crop U.S. soybeans sold as of last week (57% of which has been bought by China), this would be a new record for the largest new-crop sales volume to date.

“The goal for both of these projects is to improve soil quality and to determine the forage value of such annual cropping systems,” explains María Angélica Ouellette, research coordinator with NPARA.

As well, 8 intercrop trial treatments are being grown with the yield of both crops at each trial to be assessed.

August WASDE: Global Wheat Harvest Looks Big

For the wheat crop, U.S. production was bigger than expected as the USDA said the U.S. durum and HRS wheat crops are looking pretty solid, at 62M and 577M respectively (or 1.687 MMT and 15.7 MMT if converting bushels into metric tonnes). Elsewhere, Australia and Canada’s wheat supply and demand tables were largely unchanged, but the USDA made downgrades in Argentina and the EU, but increased their forecast of the wheat harvest size in Russia and Ukraine.

“There’s potential for disease, there’s potential for loss of soil quality, and there is also potential to reduce the fertility of the soil. We wanted to see if these projects would work to show growers how they could improve their own fields. For example with intercropping, every grower could see the possibilities of growing two crops, and profit from them both, while increasing the quality of the soil and lowering inputs.”

Ukraine’s wheat harvest and exports were raised by 500,000 MT to 27 MMT and 18 MMT respectively, while Russia’s harvest and exports were bumped up by 1.5 MMT to 78 MMT and 37.5 MMT respectively. Conversely, the EU wheat harvest (including durum) was felled by 4 MMT to 135.5 MMT, while exports were lowered by 1.5 MMT to 25.5 MMT. The bigger surprise for me was that Argentina’s wheat harvest was not lowered by more than the 500,000 MT than what the USDA reduced it by, to now sit at 20.5 MMT. The Buenos Aires Grains Exchange noted this week, however, that the recently-planted Argentine wheat crop is being punished by dryness, with yield expectations falling “week after week”.

She adds that during previous NPARA research tours, there has been a lot of interest especially in the intercrop trials, and there is some interest with the cover crop mixes from those who have livestock in the area.

What this all adds up for this August WASDE is global wheat inventories hitting a new high of 316.8 MMT. Keep in mind that China still accounts for 51% of total global wheat inventories (and they don’t export anything!). For corn, global stocks were slightly below expectations while, thanks to Chinese increase consumption of soybeans by 2 MMT in 2019/29 and 3 MMT in 2020/21, global soybean inventories came in well below market pre-report expectations.

Overall, while the grain markets rally is largely due to this week’s exports sales and the windstorm in Iowa, this August WASDE report reminds us of large crops on the horizon.

It’s very possible that, with the storms, U.S. corn and soybean yields will be lowered from their current record levels, but the likelihood of total production being a top 2 or 3 year is very likely. Further, we have to remind ourselves that we’re still in COVID-19, which means reduced demand for everything from gasoline/ethanol to commercial food demand (which trickles back to less demand for meat, which means less grain demanded by the feed sector).

The good news is that we’re in the time of year when grain markets are usually at or near their lowest, so while things from a price standpoint for the 3 staples of corn, soybeans, and wheat look terrible, they almost always do right now. Therein, keep your chin up and think about your cashflow needs and breakeven levels. In 2019-20, FCC grew its portfolio by 6.6 per cent to $38.6 billion, a reflection of the strength of the agriculture and food industry and their ability to invest in their operations. The portfolio included payment schedule adjustments to nine per cent of the total amount owing compared to four per cent in the previous year. This increase was primarily due to pandemic-related support.

Farm Credit Canada (FCC) reported another year of strong financial performance last year, capping 27 consecutive years of growth and innovation in Canada’s agriculture and food industry.

As part of the Government of Canada’s plan to support the economy from the sudden shock of the pandemic, FCC received an en-

Other 2019-2020 financial highlights include:

Net income of $632.6 million, to be reinvested in agriculture through funding new loans and developing agriculture knowledge, products and services for customers.

A dividend of $394.8 million paid by FCC to the Government of Canada.

An allowance for credit losses level recognizing the accumulation of challenges in the Canadian agriculture and agri-food sector, including disruptions from COVID-19.

FCC has maintained a strong capital position and is in an even stronger position to support the industry through challenging times.

With a $500 million pandemic-related capital contribution from the Government of Canada in March, FCC was able to increase its lending capacity by $5 billion.

FCC continues to provide free learning opportunities and economic insights through events, web, social media and various publica-

tions for all involved with the industry.

How to measure canola losses out the combine

The Canola Council’s goal is for an average threshing loss of two per cent – or less – of total yield across the Prairies. But what is an acceptable amount of canola combine loss for your farm? Every farm will have a different answer, striking their own balance between capturing as much of the crop as possible while also maintaining harvest productivity.

To answer that question for your farm, you must first figure out the level of losses out the back of the combine. You might decide that one bushel per acre (bu./ac.) is an acceptable amount of loss, but what if your combine is throwing over three bu./ac. throughout most of the harvest day? You have to check to find out. And then you can decide whether to keep going or start making adjustments.

Once you’ve made a few loss measurements, the next part of the process is to determine how to reduce those losses – if you decide they’re too high. Is science back in style?

By Cam Dahl, President of Cereals Canada There have been some unexpected impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. One of these is the new celebrity status of our Chief Medical Health Officers. A lot of people who just a few short months ago never even knew every province had a Chief Medical Health Officer are now hanging on to every word. Does this mean science and respected authority based on knowledge education and experience is coming back in style? I hope this is the case but there are worrying signs society’s newfound trust in science may not outlast COVID-19.

First to the good news. A recent survey (by Proof Strategies) found that Canadians trust in doctors and scientists has increased by over 10% since the pandemic hit. This is true in most of the world, for example results in Europe show that public trust in science and researchers has soared during the pandemic.

This does not mean that the internet snake-oil salesmen have gone away. Even the President of the United States has mused about disinfectant injections to the lungs or ultraviolet light through the skin to destroy the virus. But outside of the most diehard conspiracy theorists trust in science seems to be on the ascendancy and faith in quackery is on the decline.

At first blush this is good news for those of us involved in, and who want to advance, agriculture and agri-food. Could we be seeing a turn to trust in nutrition advice actually based on scientific evidence rather than the latest fad? Some anecdotes indicate that this might be the case.

For example, the anti-gluten fad, which was beginning to fade away before COVID-19, seems to have vanished. People have fallen in love with bread again, as is evidenced by the bump in flour demand across Canada.

How does society’s trust in science and research impact our food and those who supply it? For many people, the pandemic has brought home the tremendous strength and value of our food chain. Despite some disruptions and inconveniences, Canadians have not been at risk that the shelves will be empty when they visit the grocery store. What might not be as readily appreciated is that the strength and resilience of Canadian agriculture and our food supply chain is a result of science and research.

Food commentary before the pandemic included much nostalgia for the agriculture of past generations. We want full grocery shelves, cheap food, but agriculture practices that look like they have come out of Charlotte’s Web. This rosy retrospection has been interrupted somewhat by the immediacy of the pandemic, but I fear it will be back as our focus on dealing with COVID-19 becomes a memory.

Now is the time for both governments and industry to step up and emphasize that the security and resiliency of the food supply chain, experienced by Canadians during the pandemic, is not

an accident. Canadians have been food secure through the pandemic because of modern agriculture that includes pesticides, chemical fertilizers, precision agriculture and science-based regulations.

Further, Canada needs to use this time of a resurgence in the understanding of the value of science and research to push for a greater scientific foundation of the world’s trading system. After all it is not just Canadian consumers that depend on the resiliency of a science-based food supply chain, but consumers in every country to which we export Canadian farmers’ production.

Sadly, I am not sure the return to a trust in institutions, research and scientists is a trend that is going to last longer than social distancing. Most people recognize that the decisions they are making today will have an immediate impact on their own health and the well-being of their loved ones (exceptions noted for those who crowd downtown Toronto parks). This immediacy of impact will fade when we come out of the pandemic and the latest quick cure for everything pops up on the internet.

Take pride in your work We have all heard the saying “If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well”. I agree and I believe that when it comes to working with the horse, it is even more important.

Doing things well is a challenge and is something a person can take great pride in if their horse or horses want to be with them. When I say that a horse wants to be with them I mean that the horse likes to be with them not because of the food they bring or the brushing or scratching they get. All horses like getting fed oats, crunchies, hay, whatever, or getting brushed and scratched but that doesn’t mean they like us.

The real test is can you ask something from your horse and they still want to be with you without all the goodies. The more a person asks of their horse the easier it is to see if the horse really likes or wants to be with their handler. For example, if you went to work each day and the boss met you at the door with some snacks followed by a nice massage and said you could leave when you wanted or maybe straighten some papers for an hour or so and text a few people then it would be pretty easy to show up for that job. But if you had a boss that wanted you to work when you’re at work, some days with sweat dripping off your nose if needed, then those are two very different environments.

Just because a horse shows up at the gate when we arrive doesn’t mean they like us or want to be with us. However, if you spent time with your horse the day before where you really had a learning, productive and, usually, challenging day and they meet you at the gate then that is one good sign the horse is liking you.

There are two things that horses

love beyond anything. They trump oats, crunchies or any other horse treat. Those two things are feel and timing. If we read and understand the horse correctly, we can offer the correct feel and timing with practice. Horses feel safe and understood, they understand us and what we want if we can learn the proper feel and timing. Everything becomes clear and comfortable for them. They know what is expected and it feels right.

Some things I look for to know if I’m getting it right and if I can take pride in my work would be if they meet me at the gate or, at least, allow me to walk out in the field with my halter in plain view and let me put it on. Better yet, if I can lead them back by the mane and, even better than that, if I can ask them to come back to the barn without a hand or rope on them. Other signs that I’m on the right track would be when I’m working with a horse and they get to where they wrap their neck around me in what I call a horse hug. Or, you might be stopped, catching a breather and the horse softly, respectfully with its head down, just kind of steps in close and bends their neck around your hip and legs. Their eye will be soft. Then, when it’s time to get back to whatever you’re doing, the horse does it with ears forward with an eye that is alert and attentive. The request you ask for is done with a positive “yes!

Right-away” response. They should look alive, interested and learning.

These responses are things a person could take pride in developing.

The opposite of this would be a horse that is slow and dull to follow a request. Another example would be if you have to hide your halter and

bring oats to catch a horse, or if they see you and head for the far end of the pasture, then something is not right. A sign that things need to change is when they pin their ears or flash their tail around you or when you ask them to do something. Another sign that things need to change is a horse that whinnies always looking somewhere else. When you are standing there, they look away from you. If a person reaches to touch the horse’s head, they move their head away instead of towards you.

If they push into us with any part of their body, then these are all things I could not take pride in. If any or all of these things are happening during the time you spend with a horse, or it gets worse after a session, then it can be changed with understanding the horse and learning to have great feel and timing.

If I can spend time with a horse and know that the horse was with me and not somewhere else; if the horse learnt something or I did; if the time spent was a step forward that both horse and human got something positive from it, then I can sleep easy and look forward to tomorrow and the challenge of doing things well. I can then take pride in my work.

At the end of your day, ask yourself: Did I learn Did the horse learn Was the session or time productive Did the horse enjoy it Does the horse have a soft eye and is responsive to requests Does the horse have its head down and a wrapped neck arced around you in a horse hug

Or do you have the opposite: Does he look the other way head high and neck bent away from you and whinnying Does the horse want to come see you or be caught the next day Does the horse pin their ears around you, pushing into you or turning hip towards you, flash their tail when you ask them to do something.

Fear, respect, responsive Does your horse like you Everybody wants a horse that likes them is responsive not spooky or dull. Take pride in your work and go to bed feeling good about the time spent.

Thunderstorm phobia in dogs

by Dr. Zoe Ross We have recently had some big thunderstorms in the Peace which have provided us with some pretty amazing light shows in the evenings but have also resulted in some very scared canine friends. Thunderstorm phobia (or fear of thunder storms) occurs in dogs. It can occur at any age and in any breed of dog. Dogs with phobia show signs of anxiety during storms such as whining, shaking, hiding, urinating or defecating in the house, pacing, panting and sometimes destructive behavior if they are trying to get out of an area they are confined in. It is important to understand that these dogs are truly afraid and are not being “bad dogs” when they are displaying these signs. You should try to reassure them and not discipline them for this behavior.

There are some things that you can do to help your dog out during thunder storms. You can try to minimize their exposure to the noise and lights of the storm by putting them in a darkened room with the blinds closed or a sound proof area.

Sometimes using white noise can help to mask the sounds of the thunder so there is less stimulus for them. You may notice that there is a place that your dog likes to hide during a storm. If it is ok for them to be there, then make sure they have access to that location. Some dogs will try to run away during storms and then they are at risk of getting lost or injured so it is important to make sure they are in a place where they can’t run away and get hurt. It can also be helpful to provide them with some distraction during the storm such as a treat dispensing toy such as a kong with frozen peanut butter inside it or a chew toy. Playing with your pet may also provide a distraction for them.

There are special shirts called Thundershirts which can help relax your pet as well. These shirts help provide gentle steady pressure. Research has shown that this type of pressure can help dogs with anxiety problems in a similar manner as it can help people such as infants that like swaddling and people with autism that respond to gentle pressure or weighted vests. Dog Appeasing Pheromone (DAP) can also have a calming effect and is available as a spray or diffuser. This is a pheromone that is produced by lactating female dogs and helps calm their puppies. The essential oil Lavender may also have a calming effect but be aware that our pets have a much keener sense of smell than us so be careful not to use too much.

In some cases dogs can be so fearful that they are in danger of harming themselves or as I mentioned earlier can be destructive when trying to get out of the house or kennel. In some situations there are medications that can help with anxiety in your pet. Unfortunately most of the time these medications have be given on a daily basis during the summer months because often by the time we realize there is a storm coming, the dog has already reached a very fearful and anxious state and often giving them medication at that stage isn’t very helpful. If you are concerned about your pet’s phobia and are considering medication, you should book a consultation with your veterinarian so they can discuss the medication options with you and come up with an appropriate plan for your pet.

Preparations underway for 2020-21 High School Rodeo season It wasn’t too long ago that the B.C. and Canadian High School Rodeo Finals set for June and July were cancelled, but the 2020-21 High

School Rodeo of B.C. season could begin before you know it.

The North Region season will

begin with two rodeos in Hudson’s Hope Aug. 22 and 23, pending approval from the National High School Rodeo Association.

Both the Hudson’s Hope rodeos, and rodeos in Valemount Sept. 6 and 7, have already been approved by the B.C. High School Rodeo Association. Two more North Region rodeos are currently being planned for Sept. 12 and 13, and Sept. 18 to 20.

Though last year’s season started in August, things usually haven’t begun until September.

With the second-half of last season cancelled, and a sense of urgency looming over the upcoming year, the association thought it would be best to get the fall season in earlier than normal.

“The second wave (of COVID-19) could hit this fall, and with all the uncertainty we thought it would be best to get threse rodeos done early,” said High School Rodeo of B.C. Secretary Bonny Mills.

The High School Rodeo Association could struggle a bit this year when it comes to sponsorship, but Mills said they will go forward as best they can. For their part, the association’s executive has agreed to rollover sponsors from rodeos that were cancelled last season ,and to feature the flags of each business in the fall rodeos.

The rodeos will be modified to ensure physical distancing and keep the events safe.

“Our sponsors have been very loyal to us over the years, and we’re grateful to those who are able to give a bit this year,” said Mills.

Invasive hawkweeds targeted The Peace River Regional District is turning its attention to eradicating invasive hawkweed - in 2021.

A campaign set to start this year has been pushed to next year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Hawkweeds are closely related to dandelions, and easy to identify by their brights orange and red and yellow flowers. There are eight species native to B.C., however, another 14 species that are invasive, according to the Invasive Species Council of BC.

You do a lot around the farm.

Kari Bondaroff, environmental services manager for the PRRD, says early detection and prevention is key — hawkweeds spread by root and seed to form dense roots that choke out native grasses and kill pasture forage for livestock. The weeds are inedible and contain zero nutrients.

“Thankfully we don’t have a huge amount of it at this point, the detriments are mostly to agriculture,” Bondaroff said.

“Once those plants are in there, the producers are going to struggle to get rid of them. So we’re really trying to increase awareness, so that people are reporting them and able

A campaign was set to start in earnest this year, but has been pushed to 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The PRRD meanwhile continues a campaign to eradicate invasive species of daisies, including the Chamomile and Oxeye Daisy, which are invasive perennials considered regionally noxious under the BC Weed Control Act. Free dumping is provided at the North Peace, Chetwynd, and Bessborough landfills.

The PRRD has received 59 invasive plant complaints so far this year for camomile, daisies, hawkweed, tansies, and thistle.

There are two field service assistants who hand pull invasive plants on a daily basis, while a compliance and enforcement officer responds to weed complaints.

“We’re finally starting to see a little bit of a shift to different species, which is nice. We’re trying to target some of those species that we don’t have a lot infestations on,” Bondaroff said.

Strong irrigation systems This funding will help ensure there is water for irrigation and agricultural operations, municipal use, recreation, wildlife and habitat enhancements.

IRP funds are often used to replace open channel irrigation canals with buried underground pipelines that reduce water loss through seepage and evaporation.

Water that would otherwise be lost is then available for irrigation and other uses.

“All of the province’s irrigation districts work hard to ensure that water is there when we need it. Investing in infrastructure will ensure water is well-managed and that producers can irrigate more land with the same amount of water. Irrigation provides a huge economic potential and every dollar that’s invested in irrigation results in economic returns.”

Devin Dreeshen, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Over the last few weeks, Minister Dreeshen visited many of the irrigation districts in southern Alberta to announce the funding and learn more about how irrigation projects benefit producers and communities.

Pipelines are a reliable water delivery method and increase water management efficiency. IRP grants support better water security

and availability. Producers in irrigation districts also invest in district-owned and on-farm infrastructure improvements. Effective infrastructure ensures they are getting good value for their money and that water is available for irrigation, value-added processing and other uses.

Food companies around the world invest in areas with reliable irrigated farmland. These investments help to create good jobs, increase agricultural trade and grow our economy.

Started in 1969, the IRP provides cost-shared funds to irrigation districts to rehabilitate irrigation infrastructure. Alberta’s government contributes 75 per cent of the cost and the district contributes 25 per cent.

Alberta’s Recovery Plan is a bold, ambitious long-term strategy to build, diversify, and create tens of thousands of jobs now. By building schools, roads and other core infrastructure we are benefiting our communities.

SEXSMITH ELEVATOR

PRESERVATION PROJECT UPDATE AUGUST 2020

The Sexsmith & District Museum Society has been working hard for the past couple of years to complete the preservation of the last remaining “Wooden Giant” in the area that was eligible for such a project.

Replacement of the shingles on the entire structure was completed last year. Painting and replacement of the windows will be finished this summer.

There was a documentary called “The Wooden Giant” completed last year on our elevator project, which can be accessed on You Tube.

The third phase of our preservation project will occur next year, fundraising permitting. Unfortunately, COVID-19 has affected everything, including this project. This phase will include cleaning and minor repairs to the interior, as well as office repairs, electrical wiring and landscaping.

We are looking forward to opening the elevator to the public as soon as the preservation project is complete. This is an epic undertaking, involving one of the largest elevator’s constructed, and it will grace the Sexsmith skyline to for many years to come.

Alberta milk production in 2019 “The total cost of producing a hectolitre – 100 own feeds, however in 2019, the percentage of

litres – of milk in 2019 was $82.54, an increase of 3% from 2018,” explains Pauline Van Biert, research analyst with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF). “This value may be easier to understand as just under $8,300 per cow per year.”

Feeding a cow for a year costs about $3,600 and is by far the highest contributor at 43.6% of total costs. Variable expenses contribute about 24.9%, 16.7% toward capital expenses and 14.8% to labour.

She says that the prices for forages, especially hay, and barley grain continued to be high through 2019. It was a challenging growing and harvest season with both wet and dry pockets across the province affecting both quality and availability.

“Many dairy farmers are able to grow their

homegrown feeds dropped from the year before to only 60% of roughage – hay, silage – and 8% of their feed grains. Good quality feed is necessary to maintain the health and productivity of the dairy cows and mixed dairy rations along with vitamins and minerals supplement the roughages fed, bringing extra costs. Dairy farmers work closely with nutritionists to keep feed balances in check as cows need consistency.”

Additional study results include: Total investment dollars per cow significantly jumped from 2018. Dairy farms are investing to expand production capacity, efficiencies and sustainability to meet quota requirements and address labour issues.

This reflects positive herd management in cow health, nutrition, and comfort to maintain productivity levels.

Return to equity - gross income less total production cost - was relatively unchanged from 2018. Milk price increased by about 3%, but these gains were enough to offset increased input costs and debt obligations.

“Demand for milk remained high throughout 2019 due to retail demand for cream, butter and cheese as well as an increase in consumer income and changes in food preferences,” she adds.

She notes that there is quite a variety of dairy farms in Alberta and that further analysis of the data collected from the Dairy Cost Study reveal a 22% range between the highest and lowest cost producers.

“The categories most affecting this difference are total feed costs and more significantly, the cost of labour.”

Dairy farmers in Alberta volunteer to participate in the Dairy Cost Study and provide information on their dairy enterprise. In return they receive a business analysis to use in their daily farm management. From this dataset, weighted sample averages are calculated resulting in this Alberta benchmark report.

Belt Drive Betty is back in the saddle, and on the road Travel in 2020 and the changes that COVID-19 has brought to our world has made hosting events a challenge.

One has to get creative if there is to be any joy being spread! Here in Northwestern Alberta COVID-19 is a topic that has sucked the oxygen out of the room, just like it has everywhere else.

Alberta has entered stage two reopening and has started to allow gatherings of up to 200 people out of doors.

You have to be physically distanced, temperatures have to be checked and they want you to control the flow of human traffic to avoid people coming into contact with you.

Some of our cities have made masks mandatory, others are not getting into the great mask debate so far.

It was under these odd circumstances and the rather restrictive guidelines that one of Alberta’s largest grassroots motorcycle rallies was able to host one of it’s most integral ceremonies.

Bob Ross, President of the Canadian Motorcycle Tourism Association and one of the founders of the Wayside Fallen Riders Memorial Park jumped through a lot of hoops to make the Fallen Riders Memorial service happen.

The Run to the Hills Memorial Rally would normally have been held July 17-19, but of course, large gatherings are still a no no, and music is a definite forbidden fruit.

On the Saturday of the rally, there is always a memorial service and roll call to remember the fallen in the motorcycle community. Never before has there been a need to have approval to

host a memorial service. Thankfully Alberta Health Services approved the memorial ceremony with up to 200 people.

2020 has been the one thing I wished the Cancel Culture would CANCEL! Mother Nature is obviously having some kind of episode with PMS, she is one cranky old bag!!!

In spite of the mixed bag of weather that swirled around me as I rode from Grande Prairie to Two Hills, a 7 hour ride, I managed to stay dry only getting rained on as I pulled into the event.

100 riders came out to remember their fallen.

It was an emotional ceremony with many sobbing as they paid their respects. Sadly we have lost a lot of riders in the last year here in Alberta. As Pastor Wes read out the roll of our fallen, the sun started to break through and the rest of the day was beautiful.

If you ever find yourself in Alberta (if they ever reopen our border), you need to visit Two Hills Alberta, and spend some peaceful moments in the chapel, or on the wrap around deck looking out over the rolling farmland and the Two Hills Golf Course.

Government investment brings nutritious surplus food to vulnerable The eight partnerships announced which involve over 100 different organizations will help farmers meet the needs of vulnerable Canadians and recover the cost of their efforts.

The funding provided under the Program is ensuring producers and food processors like Nutri Group are fairly compensated for their work at the cost of production, while growing relationships with community food providers and supporting efforts to reduce food waste.

For over 30 years, Nutri Group has been providing consumers in the region with high-quality sustainable eggs, while helping farmers build stronger businesses and stronger rural communities.

Nutri Group includes graders from several provinces, namely Star egg in Saskatchewan, Country Side Farm in Manitoba, Ontario Pride egg in Ontario, Maritime Pride Egg in Nova Scotia, Nutri-Oeuf, Ovale et les Oeufs Richard in Quebec.

Second Harvest is a registered charity whose purpose is to rescue and deliver fresh, healthy, surplus food to feed people experiencing hunger across Canada. With an existing network of over 1,750 non-profit partners and a history in food rescue and logistics, Second Harvest is well positioned to purchase, process, and distribute surplus food across Canada.

Food Banks Canada is a national not-forprofit organization that works closely with a network of provincial associations, affiliate food banks, and food agencies. With FBC’s coordination efforts, over 3,000 food banks and community agencies distribute food to Canada’s vulnerable populations, with 1.1 million people served in 2019.

According to Statistics Canada, one in seven

Canadians indicated that they live in a household where there was food insecurity over a one month period during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2019, there were 1.1 million visits to food banks and 5.6 million meals served on average each month.

This announcement builds on the measures we have introduced to keep Canada’s agri-workforce strong, including: $100 million for food banks and local food organizations to help Canadians experiencing food insecurity, which is helping serve an estimated 2 million Canadians through 1,800 different community-level food organizations.

Over $77 million in funding for the Emergency Processing Fund (EPF), whose objectives include helping companies implement changes to safeguard the health and safety of workers and their families. $25 million through Nutrition North to ensure food security for Canada’s most vulnerable Travel exemptions for all temporary foreign workers, including seasonal agricultural workers and fish/seafood workers.

The innovative Surplus Food Rescue Program is a $50-million federal initiative designed to address urgent, high volume, highly perishable surplus products falling under fruit, vegetables, meat and fish and seafood. These surpluses were created because the COVID-19 pandemic largely shut down the restaurant and hospitality industry, leaving many producers without a key market for their food commodities.

The Program awarded contributions to eight organizations that leverage existing food redistribution and recovery networks and agencies, who will bring the food to every region in the country.

Partners, which include leading not-for-profits Food Banks Canada and Second Harvest, and La Tablée des Chefs, will redistribute products such as potatoes, walleye, chicken, turkey, eggs, and more. In total, the program will redistribute approximately 12 million kilograms of surplus food to more food insecure families that would otherwise have been wasted.

For over 30 years, Nutri-Group and its partner producers have been providing consumers in Canada with high-quality sustainable eggs, while helping farmers build stronger businesses and rural communities. Through the Surplus Food Rescue Program, Nutri Group will be providing Food Banks Canada and Second Harvest more than 1 million dozen eggs at cost to ensure Canadians continue to receive fresh, nutritious food during the pandemic. The eggs will be redistributed to many food banks and local food organizations across Canada, notably across the network of moissons in Quebec.

The significant disruptions to Canada’s restaurant and hospitality industry caused by COVID-19 has left many producers with surplus food and no way to get it onto the plates of Canadians.
