| Nhlakanipho Shange

Lessons I learnt have made my business a success As the ENGEN Pitch & Polish programme celebrates its twelfth anniversary, the project is looking back at some amazing success stories to come out of the competition. This is the story of 2013 competitor, Nhlakanipho Shange, the owner of AD.IT Solutions, an outdoor media and marketing agency. “I grew up in Umlazi, Durban and started my career studying medicine at UCT. While I was deciding whether I wanted to continue my studies, I flew down to Cape Town to conduct a feasibility study for a low-cost bakery. On the flight, I saw those dropdown screens and thought it would be a great idea to put something like that in taxis. During my stay in Cape Town, the idea kept haunting. “When we started with taxi TV, we thought funding was the biggest problem. I now believe that, as an entrepreneur, the money will come, but that convincing the client to use your services is the key. I was helping out a friend with his business in 2013 when we came across flyers advertising the competition. At the last minute, I decided to enter.” Get a "Free" copy at selected The Newspaper stands in the Western Cape.

“Something important I learned was not to romanticise your business idea or its prospects. You need to be realistic about its prospects, the numbers and everything that goes into building it. Everything I learned during the programme has played a significant part in building my business.” Since starting up, the business has gone through so much – both good and bad. We’re currently coming back from a bit of a dip after a few years of incredible growth. I definitely recommend that anyone who is running their own business or thinking of starting one up participate in the competition. It opens your mind to a variety of possibilities for any business,” - Nhlakanipho Shange.

| Courtrai Primary takes values to another level GET THE APP

Given the hard work that has gone into championing values as an integral part of their learning culture, the leadership and staff of Courtrai Primary School in the Cape Winelands Education District (CWED) are determined to build on the foundations laid in their strong values programme. “We were adamant not to replace our value’s system that all role players of our school have so overwhelmingly embraced for the last few years; in fact, if anything, we wanted to strengthen it,” said Jan Brand, principal at Courtrai. Brand added that in the last term of 2021 all grades were asked for suggestions on how to take their “values education” forward – and that’s where the idea of a values theme for the year was born. Their theme for 2022 is ‘Courage’.

NOTICE Articles and Advertisements published in The Newspaper is not necessarily the opinion of The Newspaper unless so stated.

Brand challenged his staff and learners to: have the courage to make a difference this year – in all aspects, from discipline in class, caring, academics, sport, culture, etc. To have the courage to try one new thing this year, and have the courage to participate. Furthermore, ‘courage’ would also be part of all gatherings in the school hall for each phase to display and engage with. The school discussed it with parents at the beginning of the year and received positive feedback.

| SA Agullhas II plays key role in Endurance 22 expedition On Saturday, 5 March 2022 the wreck of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s ship, the Endurance was discovered - 107 years later - at a depth of 3 008 metres in the Weddell Sea, within the search area defined by the expedition team before its departure from Cape Town. The international expedition set sail from Cape Town during February on the Cape Town-registered public research vessel, SA Agulhas II, commanded by its South African Captain, Knowledge Bengu. The Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust had chartered the SA Agulhas II, for the Expedition, with the aim of locating, surveying and filming the wreck of the Endurance, which sank during the Antarctic expedition by Sir Shackleton in 1915. The SA Agulhas II is one of the most advanced and modern polar research vessels in the world and is used by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment for annual science and logistics expeditions into the Southern Ocean and Antarctica. The ship is a shared science platform with the Department of Science and Innovation. The vessel was chartered to perform a similar voyage in 2019, but the first search for the Endurance was unsuccessful.

In addition to locating and surveying the wreckage of the Endurance, the expedition team comprising world-leading glaciologists, marine biologists, oceanographers, and marine archaeologists, also ventured into remote regions of the Weddell Sea with the hope of uncovering vital new scientific data to improve our understanding of the area. The information collected and knowledge gained will contribute to the further protection of the region.

| Netflix to invest

more than R900m in South Africa International streaming service Netflix will invest R900-million in the South African film and television industry, it announced at the 4th Annual South African Investment Conference. Four productions will come from the commitment — three local and one international — all to be filmed in South Africa by 2023. Netflix has about 200 million members in more than 190 countries, and South Africa is becoming a popular destination. This investment will bolster the creation of jobs and also lift the local economy. Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, South Africa’s film industry created 31 444 fulltime equivalent jobs, according to the National Film and Video Foundation, but this dropped to just 12 775 jobs in 2020-21.

South African National Parks (SANParks - the public institution managing South Africa’s national parks) and the Agence Française de Dévéloppement (AFD) recently launched the bipartite agreement between the Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) and Reunion Island National Park worth €1.5 million. The funding is allocated to support park actions that facilitate sharing of knowledge and experiences between South Africa and Reunion Island. “Biodiversity conservation is one of France’s priorities. Through this exemplary regional cooperation project, France is providing concrete support for the preservation of biodiversity in Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean,” - Aurélien Lechevallier, Ambassador of France to South Africa. The indigenous people of the Cape, the Khoisan, knew Table Mountain as Hoerikwaggo, ‘the mountain in the sea’. Towering mountains rising immediately adjacent to the ocean are a dramatic and remarkable feature of both parks. TMNP covers 25,000 ha of natural areas located in the heart of Cape Town, stretching to the tip of the Cape of Good Hope. Reunion National Park covers 70% of Reunion Island’s surface area, with a central zone that houses 94% of the island’s diverse endemic biodiversity. Both parks have UNESCO world heritage status and conserve highly diverse ecosystems and cultural heritage sites of great global value. Joint challenges include invasive alien species, illegal plant harvesting, protecting threatened species, climate change and restoring degraded habitats. Both SANParks and PNR will contribute expertise and collaborate on improving park management. The project will enable new collaboration opportunities with partner research bodies including the University of Reunion, CIRAD and the University of Cape Town.

Netflix has partnered with local production houses to create shows such as the recent reality TV series Young, Famous & African. The company has invested more than R2-billion in South Africa, creating jobs for about 1 900 people over the past five years. There are more than 80 South African productions on Netflix. A 2021 study by the streaming service in collaboration with SA Tourism showed that viewers surveyed in Canada, France, the United Kingdom, Brazil, the United States and Germany were more likely to make South Africa their go-to destination and to learn a local language after watching a show featuring the country. Netflix is working with local production partners to create a number of shows, such as Project Panda, a live-action series adaptation of the anime One Piece. Project Panda — Netflix’s biggest African production to date - will create job opportunities for about 50 cast members and 1 000 full-time crew, according to the streaming company. Netflix also has a mentorship programme for more than 30 young creatives and technicians.

to save Africa’s ancient wildlife corridors

To Stellenbosch University (SU) elephant expert Dr Katharina von Dürckheim, being in the bush is her “true north”. She has pursued this passion as a wildlife scientist, wildlife editor and in working for NGOs. Through postgraduate research she has delved into elephants’ sense of smell, and into finding ways to solve the conflict between people and these African giants. As leader of the new Wildlife Free to Roam (WFR) research programme, she now focuses her efforts to help create connectivity corridors that allow wildlife to roam more easily between many of Southern Africa’s protected areas within large transboundary conservation areas. WFR is based in the SU Department of Conservation Ecology and Entomology in the SU Faculty of AgriSciences and is supported by the Peace Parks Foundation. Von Dürckheim is currently recruiting students to her research team and dealing with the logistics of setting up a base in some of the wilder parts of Southern Africa. Her team will be working in the Greater Limpopo (GL) and Kavango Zambezi (KAZA) transfrontier conservation areas (TFCAs). “The next important step is to create opportunities to connect these parks with each other. We must identify functional corridors and state forest reserves that will allow wide ranging species, such as the African elephant, routes to move along,” says Von Dürckheim. “However, spatial bottlenecks are occurring. Some say that within three years, many of these corridors will be functionally extinct, with the expansion of rural settlements. There’s a certain human density across which elephants and lions will not move. It leads to populations becoming isolated, and inbreeding happens. Connectivity is therefore important, and to look for corridors and pathways that allow wide-ranging species like elephant, lion and wild dog to roam.” The team will also study how specific species use these as corridors. The work will be done in conjunction with stakeholders and local communities.

Young chefs, students and home cooks to

A hive for wine bars

Enter culinary contest

When Cathy and Kevin Marston founded their wine bar, The Nose, in 2001 in Cape Town, there were few who had ventured into the unique arena alongside them.

The South African Chefs Association (SA Chefs) and The Plant Powered Show (TPPS) has launched a culinary competition where the winner will share a platform with top professional and celebrity chefs at The Plant Powered Show. The show takes place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) from Friday, May 27 - Sunday, May 29.

Rose Jordaan remembers a time when Bartinney Wine & Champagne Bar on Bird Street had few neighbours when it opened in 2013. (It is the oldest wine bar in town.) Rose says: “Many years ago, when Bartinney Wine Bar opened, we tried to promote the idea of an Urban Walking Wine Route – it finally caught on.”

The not-to-be-missed three-day live in-person event will also incorporate an exciting virtual component, which will allow visitors from other provinces and around the globe to attend online.

The walking wine route has expanded substantially to include Plaisir Wine Lounge, Le Grande Domaine Enoteca, QBar, Stellenbosch Wine Bar and Brampton Wine Studio, Spek n Bone is a small-plates eatery and wine bar, Beyerskloof Wine Bar, Simon Wine Bar at De Warenmarkt and The Wine Glass.

The Plant Powered Show is the first of its kind in South Africa, bringing the plant-based, vegetarian, vegan and conscious living revolution to a mainstream audience. The hugely successful inaugural Plant Powered Show (under the name The Festive Vegan & Plant Powered Show) took place online in 2020.

Broadcaster and host of “Dan Really Likes Wine,” Dan Nicholl recently explored Stellenbosch wine bars for his online show and says: “I’ve always loved the idea of wine bars and the chance to sample a range of different glasses with tapas or small plates, and so setting off to explore the streets in Stellenbosch searching for wine bars had considerable appeal.”

The 2022 competition is open to all chefs, student chefs and home cooks residing in South Africa, aged 28 and younger, who are invited to submit their best vegan dish. Those entering must submit a 30-second video (or a link to where the video can be found) explaining why they should be the winner of a coveted demo spot at the TPPS, as well as a recipe using vegan-only products with a list of ingredients and the cooking method. Entries, along with a full name, ID, email and cell number details should be sent to competitions@sachefs. co.za for the attention of Adrian VigusBrown.

Dan concludes: “There’s a real buzz to Stellenbosch presently, and the streets are alive with people enjoying a town where walking is encouraged by the layout, proximity and relative safety of the environment. Add in the wine culture that’s such a heartbeat of Stellenbosch, and small wine bars are a natural fit for the town.”

Society Mochaccino

Brings together favourites Connecting with people outside our immediate family, extended family, and work colleagues after two years of disconnection can be somewhat daunting. Many may feel a sense of anxiety when it comes to being around people again, even with Covid protocols in place.

Entries close at midday on April 19 with the top 10 finalists announced on April 22. These finalists will then have until April 29 to submit a demo video with the ultimate winner announced on May 2 and invited to be part of The Plant Powered Show to perform a live cooking demo on Saturday, May 28, in The Plant Kitchen Chef’s Theatre.

Nando’s young designer search

Where hot talent meets

However, Society Cappuccinos is encouraging South Africans to take the plunge and initiate connecting with friends and loved ones again, whether in person, or over a phone call or video call, based on the fundamental belief that we really are better together. To bring people together, Society has launched a new Mochaccino which unites two things’ people love – coffee and chocolate. Society Mochaccinos are made from the finest 100% Arabica coffee beans paired with indulgent Cocoa - bringing together premium coffee and chocolate for an indulgent taste experience. “Society Cappuccinos is a brand that promotes connection, conversations, and coming together - because we know as humans we can’t live without connection,” says Society’s COO, Natalie White. “That’s why we’re bringing people together over our newest launch, Society Mochaccino.” “This combines two things most people can’t live without – coffee and chocolate!” Enjoy the new Society Mochaccino in one of three ways: The Hot Mocha, Iced Mocha or Mochaccino Milkshake. Society Cappuccinos are available in packs of 8s in 5 delicious flavours: Sweetened, Vanilla, Hazelnut, Caramel Toffee and Moccachino.

Entries are now open for the fourth compelling iteration of the Nando’s Hot Young Designer (HYD) talent search. This face-off seeks to unearth saucy new designs for Nando’s restaurants around the world, and fire up the careers of emerging local creatives. This time around, entrants have been tasked with designing a condiment unit which will display the brand’s acclaimed Peri Peri sauces. The challenge is to do so in such a way that these sauces and their piquant ingredients, which form an intrinsic part of the Nando’s experience, remain visible and accessible to customers throughout their visit. The end goal is to list the winning condiment unit on The Portal to Africa – Nando’s online marketplace, where interior designers working on Nando’s restaurants around the world can shop for original pieces of furniture and lighting that are designed and manufactured in South Africa. Past years called for lighting solutions, patterns and benches; and these prior competition rounds have seen their respective finalists and winners propelled into the limelight and mentored in all things related to creating a sustainable business. In 2020 are previous winners that have gone on to evolve and grow within the discipline. Up-and-coming designers are challenged to bring their own “sauce” by entering vibrant, yet functional, conversation pieces, whose inspiration is rooted right here at home, on the African continent. Entries close on 31 May 2022. To enter visit www.clout-sadesign.co.za

Thirty years ago, Eve, Tanja Myburgh’s mother, established an equestrian business in Durbanville, called the Tack Shack. From small beginnings in 1992, and Tanja joining Eve in 1995, the business has grown into a thriving OneStop Equestrian store, employing 28 staff. Eve started riding at Arnim’s Place Riding School on Bottelary Rd, Kuils River many years ago. After a few months, she introduced Tanja, then 10-years-old to horse-riding. Scared and intimidated at first, Tanja soon became completely addicted to the sport. “I loved being with horses and was exhilarated by the sport and competing in events. Arnim’s Place Riding School was the beginning of my journey with horses. My mother purchased her first horse, Sirrocco, a head strong boereperd cross saddler. We loved him to bits! He taught me to ride, staying in the saddle and taking control,” Tanja says.

“On my 13th birthday my parents bought me my first horse, ‘Take it Easy Dusky’. He was a Thoroughbred and not the easiest horse to ride, but we became a great team. We took part in many competitions through my Novice and Junior riding career, and I competed in many a show and performed well. I was also chosen to represent Western Province in dressage and competed in Welkom in the disciplines of dressage, showing, eventing, and jumping. I have been riding ever since and still own 3 horses. These days I no longer compete although I still enjoy riding,” Tanja continues.

Tack Shack Background Eve had been working for HGS Trading, a saddlery store in Durbanville (on main road next to Standard Bank) to earn an additional income for Tanja to continue riding and to maintain her own horses. When the business was liquidated, the owner asked Eve if she would be interested in purchasing the business. Although she was interested, no bank would loan her R30 000. Eventually, she found a silent partner, as well as an active partner. Each purchased a third of the business and a seed was planted. Eve had borrowed R10 000 from her sister for the start-up and the Tack Shack was established in November 1992. “In 1995, now age of 25 and working at Old Mutual I was asked by Eve to join the business as part of a plan to buy out the partners. It was a big decision for me to move to something uncertain with no guarantees, but Old Mutual was destroying my soul. Needless to say, I took the leap that same year and joined Eve at the Tack Shack. I have never looked back.” Tanja beamed. “In 1996, we were presented with opportunity to purchase our own property at 17 New Street, Durbanville. Once again big decision time since the banks would not help with a 100% bond. We had to borrow the deposit from my aunt and purchased the property. Tack Shack now had its own roof. Tanja says. Sadly, Eve passed away in 2009, and she had to take up the reins.” ”Although it was a difficult time, the business continued to grow and expand. Tanja’s husband joined her in 2016 and has been a great support/sounding board for the last few years. The workshop eventually moved to another premises to make for the ever-growing retail operation.

Equestrian products Tack Shack manufactures all leather equestrian products, as well as repairing saddles. Their wholesale offering to other equestrian businesses is also showing strong growth. Tack Shack is also an importer of goods from across the globe and currently receives containers monthly. Tack Shack offers a large selection of Equestrian products for both Horse and Rider, including supplies for Stable & Vet, as well as providing a repair service. In November 2019 the Tack Shack launched their online shop and is currently shipping orders to customers daily to as far afield as Namibia. All orders are processed, picked, and packed by dedicated employees. Goods are sent out next day, but usually within 3 working days, depending on stock availability.

New Premises “We are now taking the next step in our evolution with new premises in Stonewood Park, Kraaifontein, and I expect this will lead to even greater things. I think our business is unique in that we are the only full spectrum Equestrian store in Cape Town, offering sales, repair services as well as manufacturing a large selection of Equestrian products under our own brand name. Our business is not modelled as a corporate and I try to be hands-on working with the staff to ensure we all have the same vision and goals in a family like atmosphere.”

Customer Service “Customer service is very important to us, and with everything being under one roof, we can now extend our focus even more. We are planning to expand our manufacturing capability and offer our wholesale and retail client’s top quality products proudly made in South Africa,” Tanja concludes. As of 1 April 2022, the Tack Shack will be conducting its business from their new and beautifully designed premises at 41 Tanzanite Crescent, Stonewood Business Park, Kraaifontein.

Back to the office tips Just Money release Investment allocation: If you have not yet spoken to a financial advisor and considered their professional perspective, this is a good time to book a meeting or call. Commuter costs: Fuel costs have gone up dramatically, and your petrol bill could be a headache when you commute to the office. Vehicle maintenance and careful driving will pay off eventually. Consider car-pooling with a co-worker, as vehicle insurance costs may increase due to mileage-based premiums. Office gear: If your office attire has been sweatpants and t-shirts for the past two years, you may need to revise your wardrobe. Lunch money: Packing your own coffee capsules and lunch for work will save hundreds of rands a month, which could be allocated to building your emergency fund. Child care: If you have family nearby, enlisting their help, while offering compensation, is the easiest way to reduce child care costs. As South Africa plans to lift pandemic restrictions – at least in part – there will be more calls to return to the office. This could take the form of 8-5 at the workplace, staggered staff hours, or a hybrid model involving both the office and home. Whatever your employment options may be, this is an appropriate time to take financial stock, revisit your budget, and examine where you can save, says JustMoney.co.za. Preparing for a return to the office, whether on a full- or part-time basis, it’s worth considering JustMoney’s financial planning checklist. Budget review: Make a list of your current household essentials, such as bond payments, electricity and food, along with additional expenses such as car payments and school fees. Emergency savings: Aim to build up sufficient savings to cover your expenses for three to six months. Channel any additional funds into investments.

Online shopping: Online shopping will not only help you maximise your leisure time, but will also cut your fuel expenditure. Employee benefits: Your company probably made compensation changes during the pandemic, and will be reviewing these as staff return to the workplace. Ensure that you are informed about, and take advantage of, company benefits, such as your employer matching your medical aid and retirement saving contributions. Debt help: The pandemic has made us more aware of the importance of mental health. Being unable to keep up with debt is extremely stressful. The good news is that there is professional help available to support you in tackling debt. JustMoney.co.za, established 14 years ago, is a trusted voice within the personal finance sector. The JustMoney website offers articles, money management tools and a wide range of financial products and services. Over 200,000 South Africans subscribe to the newsletter to stay informed and become financially savvy.

Delivering your dream kitchen without the drama The kitchen is often described as the heart of the home and is one of the most popular home improvement projects, but also one of the most complex. According to specialist loan provider, DirectAxis, home improvements, including kitchen remodels, are among the leading reasons people take out loans, so ensuring that you get the best value, and the finished kitchen meets your expectations is important. Nozizwe Fakude, DirectAxis’ head of consumer insights, says that it’s a good idea to know what you’re in for before committing or applying for a loan, and that means being realistic and aligning your preferences with what you can afford. According to the Kitchen Specialists’ Association (KSA), a non-profit organisation that represents 274 reputable kitchen manufacturers and suppliers, a major source of conflict between a customer and a kitchen company is when the client’s tastes and budget do not align. She says that once you’ve decided, write a brief before you visit a kitchen company. This will focus your mind and save time by giving the designer an understanding of what you want.

Stick to your budget: Fancy upgrades and accessories are sure-fire budget busters.

The brief should include your budget and explain why you are undertaking the renovation and what the goal is – a cost-effective facelift or completely redoing a 20-year-old kitchen. It should also explain your lifestyle. Do you love to cook? What type of food do you like to cook? Do you entertain a lot? How does the kitchen feature in family life? The more information you provide, the easier it will be for the designer to meet your requirements.

Communicate: Don’t be afraid to ask the designer and contractors questions about why they’ve made certain recommendations or are doing things a particular way. Remember, you’ll have to live with the kitchen long after they’ve left site. Except there will be difficulties: Not having a kitchen while the work is taking place is disruptive and can lead to tensions in the household. Try to anticipate and avoid these by providing alternative places to make tea or coffee or setting up somewhere else for children to do homework.

Tips for a stress-free remodel are: Make alternative catering arrangements: While your kitchen is out of service, expect to do a lot more braaing or eat a lot more microwavable or take-out meals.

Make sure the job is properly finished: Before you sign off your new kitchen, make the final payment and the contractors leave site, make sure everything is completed. You can find a checklist on the KSA website.

Canvas Collective Africa Enters the market with an haute style travel experience Canvas Collective Africa, founded earlier this year by luxury camping and specialist event veterans Dez Lundy and Samara Stern, have launched a truly unique camping and cuisine offering into some of the Western Cape’s most breathtakingly beautiful regions. Introducing Canvas Collective Africa’s Posh Tent and The Field Kitchen wilderness experiences; a journey into gloriously remote locations merging haute camping with fine cuisine and the great outdoors. What awaits intrepid road trippers is an immersive experience where locations will be determined by the sunshine quota, and where bountiful biomes are flush with forage-worthy ingredients. Reservations are now being accepted for the first camp-out from 14 April 2022. A Posh Tent sojourn is the ultimate for discerning adventurists and nature enthusiasts who relish camping but also appreciate a little pampering and skipping the schlep work. Step through the tent flap and what awaits is a high-end haven, a two-sleeper complete with state-of-the-art camping amenities including an en-suite bathroom including a rain shower and even a private fancy flushing loo. The living area is intimate yet roomy and centred by a Queensized bed. Outside the abode, nature watching is the order of the day, best observed from comfortable outdoor loungers and deep cushions. The Field Kitchen, South Africa’s first truly-mobile fine-dining restaurant, launches at the same time and is in the masterful hands of authentic food forager, Greg Henderson.

Gastronomes can expect adventurous yet approachable dishes that will incorporate his veld finds and other hyper local ingredients, paired with nearby estate wines and locally distilled spirits. Guests may choose from three different locations for the remainder of this year. The launch camp is located on an idyllic tranche of farmland in Botrivier in the Overberg region and will be available to über campers from April 14th and until June 30th 2022. From 7 July - 30 September 2022 Canvas Collective Africa then decamps and migrates to the fertile Biedouw Valley, just beyond Clanwilliam for the winter and spring seasons. This is flower season when the landscape becomes a magical palette of colour unique to South Africa. Bringing the year to a close from 7 October - 15 December 2022 will be the lesser known Witzenberg region, home to valleys of lush vines, orchards and majestic mountain ranges. Lifestyle at La Récolte Retirement A story from a resident

Their reason for you having to move is normally not nearly what goes on in your mind, or heart. You start to view various places, options, and locations. Your lists don’t coincide with your children’s, and you cannot find anything that ticks all your boxes. In these times, you are often called “difficult” or “hard-headed”. During such a time, a dear friend referred me to La Recolte. In my mind, I knew I did not want an apartment, and especially not one that does not even have a foundation yet. Without any expectation, I made an appointment to view the show unit. What a surprise it was when the apartment matched my idea of how I saw myself growing old. I decided there and then that this would be my new home. The estate offers a luxurious clubhouse, a state-of-the-art industrial kitchen where all the meals are prepared daily, a gym, library and beauty salon. Not to mention the Frail Care and medical services they offer in each home. We use the Clubhouse for our social events, braai evenings, rummicub games, needle work sessions, coffee dates or just to have a bite to eat. Friends and family can even enjoy Sunday Lunch with me. Now, 3 years later, I can say that it was the best decision I have made and wish I did it sooner. Here lives a bunch of amazing people who care and support each other. We laugh and cry together, we wine and dine, we play games and relax together. Most people consider retirement to be a pie in the sky that is waiting somewhere far in the future. Then the reality strikes, and you need to start preparing. There is usually a long list of prerequisites and requirements that you keep in your pocket. Your children normally have an entirely different list in mind.

My children are off my case and chuffed with the beautiful place they have found me. And just like that, my pie in the sky retirement, has become a wonderful reality and I could not be happier. For more information visit www.larecolte.co.za

The long weekends are just around the corner, and it’s time to plan a getaway. Explore a world in one place; a destination that will give you a faraway feeling without having to travel very far at all.

Get that faraway feeling in the six regions of Cape Town and the Western Cape. Cape Town Often compared to the French Riviera, the Mother City comes complete with a Mediterranean climate, long white beaches, cocktail bars and world class restaurants. Let’s be honest: Cape Town ticks all the boxes, and then some, it’s melting pot of cultures, superb lifestyle activities, art and creativity, and high adventure making it the destination of choice. It’s considered the jewel in the crown for a reason. Cape Overberg Transport yourself to a lush green landscape dominated by gentle, undulating hills, with a backdrop of foreboding mountain. No, this isn’t Sweden, welcome to the Cape Overberg, the breadbasket of the Western Cape. It is a favourite for the weekend warriors, looking for outdoor pursuits and adventure. It boasts great diversity: from the coast with abundant marine life, to the beautiful Elgin Valley and its wine regions – the area is a true hidden gem. Cape Winelands Tuscany is lovely, sure, but why go through all the admin, and costs, when you can everything on offer and more in the Cape Winelands? vineyards, the region’s story is intrinsically tied to the vine. And while the wine put the region on the map, it is perfectly paired with the many top local restaurants. Add craft beer and whisky to the menu too, with the area quickly becoming a leader in both beverages. Garden Route and Klein Karoo Route 66? You should rather give Route 62 a go. Voted the best road trip in the world, by CNN, thousands of families embark down this magnificent stretch of paradise every year, visiting the towns, farms, wineries, and nature reserves en route. From majestic mountains to brilliantly blue oceans and thick forested areas, the region is a natural wonderland. It’s a golfer’s paradise, with world class courses on offer, while adrenaline junkies will find few better playgrounds to explore and adventures to try. For those who prefer time on the water, the coastline and waterfalls are incredible to enjoy too.

Cape West Coast The Cape West Coast (Weskus) is a place so aweinspiring, so jaw-droppingly beautiful, you would need weeks to take it all in. Think Greece; famous for its beautiful beaches and seaside towns, it has become a popular homeaway-from-home for those looking to escape the city. The abundance of seafood and crayfish makes the area a mecca for foodies. But the Weskus is not just about the coast! The aptly named town of Darling is visited for its wildflowers and wines, while the Cederberg Mountains boast century-old rock art, and some of the best hiking, biking and bouldering, globally. Cape Karoo Wide-open space – the Cape Karoo is where you go when you need to escape the pace of city life. Kind of like Nevada, but without the visas and hassle, it is a place of incredible beauty, wild game, magical sunsets and clear night-skies. Apart from the many nature reserves and game reserves, visit Matjiesfontein, a tiny 19th Century town, seemingly untouched by time. For the food enthusiasts, be sure to stop in Prince Albert, a town with a burgeoning foodie culture, and serious artistic flair.

The earlier you start

The better for your heart The news of a heart attack claiming the life of cricket legend, Shane Warne at only 52 years of age, has sent shockwaves across the world. His sudden passing has sparked an important conversation around men’s habits and their impact on cardiovascular health. Nicole Jennings, spokesperson for Pharma Dynamics, SA’s largest provider of cardiovascular medication, says heart attacks are no longer just linked to the aged. Now, one in five heart attack patients are younger than 40. “What many don’t realise is that there are usually no signs or symptoms of high blood pressure (hypertension) or high cholesterol, yet both increase your risk of a heart attack and stroke. That’s why it is so important to have these checked by your GP regularly, especially if you’re 40 and older.”

Dis-Chem Pharmacies has launched Dis-Chem Health, a health insurance offering with premiums starting at R431 per month for the Core plan and increasing to R591 per month for the Plus plan with additional cover options available for accident and medical emergency illness cover. Child dependants start at R302 per month per child, while accident cover starts at R185 per month for adults and R100 per month for children.

Jennings says heart disease is preventable. “The earlier you start to look after your health, the better for your heart. The first place to start is to recognise the risk factors for heart disease.” These include:

This follows last year’s acquisition of 25% of Kaelo Holdings’ equity which houses a complementary portfolio of health assets, including occupational health clinics, the AskNelson psychological wellbeing platform, and the administration of benefit-rich gap and primary health insurance products. Dis-Chem said it has identified a need to provide universal access to affordable and quality private primary healthcare in an environment where more people are prepared to pay for healthcare. It added that demand for affordable medical cover continues to grow in an environment impacted by continued financial pressure on consumers, this against a backdrop of fewer people being able to afford traditional medical aid cover, and the strained quality of, and access to, public health services. Nearly three-quarters (72%) of South Africans access the public health network, 15.2% have access to medical aid, and 11.8% pay for out-of-pocket private healthcare. Only 2% of South Africans are covered by medical insurance. Medical insurance offers members non-life insurance cover for the cost of dayto-day healthcare needs and certain accident and medical emergency illness events. Whilst it is not a medical scheme, does not offer the same benefits as a medical scheme and is not a substitute for a medical scheme, medical insurance is a good option for those who cannot afford medical aid membership.

Smoking, which damages blood vessels and contributes to heart disease. Unhealthy eating leads to excess weight gain and obesity, which both cause cardiovascular disease. Excessive salt intake leads to water retention. Physical inactivity heightens your risk of developing high blood pressure by 30-50%, as well as other diseases like obesity and type 2 diabetes. Heavy drinking can also lead to hypertension, heart failure as it contributes to cardiomyopathy – a disorder that impairs the heart muscle. Stress, especially long-term stress, increases cortisol (stress hormone) levels, which raises blood cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure. Proactive, preventative care is the best approach to reduce heart attack deaths among middle-aged men.

First of its kind in SA

Warning signs of a heart attack in men include chest pain and/or discomfort, which can spread to the arms, neck, jaw or back. Dizziness or light-headedness, feeling nauseas, indigestion, unexplained sweating or shortness of breath are also critical signs.

Plant Powered Show The Plant Powered Show takes place this year at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) from Friday, 27 May - Sunday, 29 May 2022. It will incorporate a not-to-be-missed three-day live in-person event as well as an exciting virtual component, which will allow visitors from other provinces and around the globe to attend online. The Plant Powered Show is the first of its kind in South Africa, bringing the plant-based, vegetarian, vegan and conscious living revolution to a mainstream audience. The hugely successful inaugural Plant-Powered Show (under the name The Festive Vegan & Plant Powered Show) took place online in 2020. Aimed at those looking to live and enjoy a healthier, more conscious and sustainable lifestyle with a smaller environmental footprint, The Plant Powered Show features professional chefs, celebrity cooks and rising stars presenting live cooking demos, diverse and compelling talks by the health and wellness experts, premium and interactive experiences, exclusive industry networking and a marketplace of plant-based food, drink and lifestyle products. Also joining the team as a consultant is Emma-Claire Peter who started off her culinary career in food styling, recipe development and writing before working as a restaurant and chefs’ theatre coordinator for TASTE festivals and then moving into food retail, working in Selfridges and Sourced Market in London. Peter, a trained chef, most recently produced Plant Forward Kitchen for Google Foods in partnership with the Culinary Institute of America, an experience that led to her adopting a vegan lifestyle.

Benefit your health A plant-based diet is a diet consisting mostly or entirely of plant-based foods. Plant-based or plant-forward eating patterns focus on foods primarily from plants. This includes not only fruits and vegetables, but also nuts, seeds, oils, whole grains, legumes, and beans. It doesn’t mean that you are vegetarian or vegan and never eat meat or dairy. Rather, you are proportionately choosing more of your foods from plant sources. Eating more plant-based foods could do a world of good for our health and the health of the planet. Eating plant-based does not always mean having to adopt a completely meat-free diet, it is, in fact, the quality of the plant-based diet that is the most important factor to consider. Not all plant-source foods have beneficial heart health effects. A good quality plant-based diet can help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes, which in itself is a risk factor for heart disease. A very interesting study demonstrated that people who ate more whole fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, legumes, olive oil, coffee, & tea showed a much lower risk for CVD, while those who ate more unhealthy plant-based foods, like sugar-sweetened beverages, refined grains, & sweets, did not. Healthy plant-based diets can be customised to fit individual needs and cultural preferences. A small reduction of animal-based products – particularly processed meats – can significantly help improve cardiovascular health. For more information visit www.heartfoundation.co.za

of inves ting in Cypr us “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second-best time is now.” – Chinese Proverb There is a perception that it is very expensive and onerous to realize a Plan B in Europe. In Cyprus – an English-speaking, ex-British colony and full member of the EU – this perception couldn’t be more further from the truth. Cyprus is regarded as one of the safest countries in the world; and year on year sees an increase in property sales to overseas buyers especially in the Western part of the island. Huge investment is pouring into the economy with all the infrastructural developments and the enormous natural gas fields. There’s never been a better time to explore investing in Cyprus! The three main benefits of investing in Cyprus are to secure permanent residency through property investment to realise a Plan B; the lifestyle options on offer and the peace of mind that Cyprus is a secure investment destination.

1. Your Plan B.

3. A safe investment destination.

Securing permanent residency is a sought-after Plan B because it is effectively an insurance policy to be able to relocate to that country at any time without a visa required; and without having to go through the normal onerous immigration processes and procedures. The permanent residency programme on offer in Cyprus has been voted as THE BEST in Europe because it automatically qualifies 3 generations in the same family line, including dependent children up to age 25 as well as both the parents and the parents-in-law of the main investor. Not only is the application process very quick – it takes just two months for residency to be approved – but the permanent residency status for the whole family is for life, the permit never expires nor needs to be renewed. Another benefit is that you do not need to live in Cyprus to retain your residency status. Cyprus permanent residents do have the right to apply for citizenship following their physical presence in the country for a number of years, so will in fact follow the naturalisation programme.

Cyprus has been voted one of the safest countries in the world; and offers a safe, solid environment in which to invest in real estate. Properties in Cyprus offer excellent value for money when compared to other European countries – especially homes right on or near to The Med.

2. The lifestyle on offer

Your trusted partners

Another huge benefit of investing in Cyprus is the fabulous lifestyle on offer. Being an ex-British colony, there is no language barrier – everyone speaks English and all the documentation is in English. Cyprus has a relaxed, stress-free lifestyle offering an ideal family environment. Your children & grandchildren will benefit from excellent schools and tertiary education instructions (all Euro-accredited); and the healthcare facilities and medical care are world class. Cyprus is very similar to South Africa. The golf courses are world-class, the countryside is breathtakingly beautiful and Cyprus has 66 blue-flag status beaches, the cleanest seas in the Med and a mountain range where it snows for 3 months. This is a country for enjoying and exploring.

Cypriot Realty – a proudly South African company in operation for more than 14 years with offices in Sandton, Cape Town and Cyprus – is your trusted partner LOGO to realise your Plan B in Europe. We are recognised and respected as Southern Africa’s authoritative investment specialists promoting Cyprus as an ideal destination for acquiring EU citizenship or permanent residency, for property investment, for immigration or retirement and starting an EU-based business.

The lush & beautiful Western side of the country is similar to the Western Cape and enjoys the biggest demand and highest growth. In Cyprus, unlike some other European countries, as an ex-pat you are not restricted to buying only in Special Designated Areas (SDAs), nor are you prescribed to stay in the country every year to retain your residency. Being able to rent your property out has the real benefit where you can earn a decent Euro-based income. There is a high demand for both long-term rentals and short-term holiday lets. Not only will your asset generate income for you, but you have complete peace of mind that the property purchase is legitimate and your ownership is guaranteed.

We understand investor’s needs, and we have an impressive track record showcasing our success.

Property inspection trips We organise personalized property inspection trips for you to come to Cyprus to look at the property options and to experience for yourself the lifestyle on offer. From arranging meetings with taxation and legal specialists, to opening up your offshore bank account – we hold your hand every step of the way. Contact us for a confidential meeting to discuss how Cyprus can fit in with your offshore plans – we will assist and guide you every step of the way to realise Your Plan B.

City showcases Cape Town’s investment opportunities to French Business Chamber

Alderman Vos sat down with the Chamber’s Vice Chairman and Cape Town Representative, Philip Geromont, to highlight the significant travel and trade relations between France and the Mother City and to further showcase the metro’s investment opportunities. “Between 2003 and 2020, French companies invested into 18 projects in the Western Cape, bringing in R10,788 billion in investments and creating thousands of jobs. These figures underscore the importance of their country to the Western Cape and Cape Town’s economies.” “The City has a dedicated Investment Facilitation branch within the Enterprise and Investment Department that is committed to helping businesses of different sizes and industry land and expand their operations in Cape Town,” said Alderman Vos. Since its establishment in 2017, the Investment Facilitation branch has engaged hundreds of businesses and has assisted more than 20 companies, unlocking investments worth billions of rands and thousands of job opportunities. Travellers from France are equally significant to Cape Town and the province, with French arrivals to the Western Cape increasing by 32,93% between 2015 and 2018 to 102,007 tourists. “With a similar passion for wine, cuisine and culture, it’s no wonder that the French love to visit and experience what our city has to offer.”

“Through the Air Access initiative, which is funded by the City, we are working hard to connect Cape Town directly to more key source markets such as Paris. The goal is to have the Paris-to-Cape Town direct route up and running before the end of this year. As we reopen our doors to the world, we must firm up our partnerships with business and industry leaders and show them the full potential of Cape Town as the ideal destination for travel, trade, and investments so that we fire up our economy and get more Capetonians to work,” said Alderman Vos.

The South African Insurance Association (SAIA) plans to open its Vehicle Salvage Database (VSD) to the public in a move to stop previously written-off and poorly repaired vehicles from re-entering the used market. The VSD system contains information on salvage vehicles.

eDEAF, a Deaf owned company that provides SETA accredited training with the goal of empowering Deaf communities for business, are extremely proud of eighteen of their staff members for successfully completing a Corporate MBA (cMBA). SkillsTown, in collaboration with eDEAF, made the learning accessible to the Deaf by converting all the training material into South African Sign Language (SASL). “Sadly, accessible Deaf education is scarce, and we are therefore delighted that this platform truly enables equal access to education for the Deaf community,” says Nicky Bezuidenhout, eDEAF Marketing & Communications Manager.

to be opened to the public

These are vehicles that have been deregistered by the respective insurers and thus declared salvage, after policyholders have been indemnified of their motor claims. The VSD will assist the insurance and the motor industries with the process of managing wrecked motor vehicles by ensuring that an effective mitigating tool is introduced against the many vehicle crime opportunities.

deaf communities for business

The cMBA is disrupting the world of leadership development. Whilst the cMBA does not replace the traditional MBA, which is academic and scientific, it focusses on offering a scalable, practical leadership development program to develop all levels of management. The eight-month program covered eight modules including: management and leadership, sales and marketing, organisation, strategy, innovation, human resource management and finance. The cMBA aims to develop leadership skills and business process awareness by offering theory principals to participants that can be applied immediately within their respective work environments.

When a written-off vehicle is sold, the respective code is disclosed to the buyer. In this, the non-life insurance industry ensures that the relevant stakeholders who buy the salvage vehicle is fully informed of the state of the vehicle being sold, and therefore how the respective vehicle should be treated going forward. For instance, a ‘Code 4’ is a permanently demolished vehicle.

Through their partnered solutions approach, eDEAF strives to provide the open labour market with trained and skilled Deaf people who are ready to become part of the mainstream economy. eDEAF has grown to a staff complement of 62 (82% of whom are Deaf), and operates from four training hubs in Johannesburg, Pretoria, the Western Cape and Kwa-Zulu Natal.

All Code 3, 3A and 4 written off vehicles will be published on the site and the description of the codes will align with the SAIA salvage code.

Electric car ‘grants’ proposed for South Africa

South Africa risks being left behind as the rest of the world moves to electric vehicles – but the introduction of grants and other incentives could improve adoption, says the Trade & Industrial Policy Strategies (TIPS) group, an independent, non-profit, economic research institution established in 1996 to support economic policy development. “Pushed by environmental regulations, support programmes and improving economics, electric vehicles (EVs), traditional hybrid (HEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and battery electric (BEV) vehicles – are set to become dominant in the coming decades,” it said in a recent research paper. “Yet, this electric revolution risks leaving many commuters behind, further deepening inequalities between and within countries. The risk of an exclusionary, elitist transition to e-mobility is high.” To address this divide, the group said a dual strategy is necessary to foster the overall uptake of EVs as well as incentivising an inclusive rollout that benefits all in South Africa’s society.

“This level of support can bridge the gap between electric and petrol-fuelled cars for the first two quintiles of the market.”

“A temporary cash grant or innovative financial arrangement pegged at R80,000 for BEVs, R40,000 for PHEVs and R20,000 for HEVs, is recommended as the main instrument to incentivise prospective buyers.”

“Complementarity, or alternatively, extremely low-interest loans, underpinned by development finance institutions (DFIs), could be offered to EV buyers. Second, the strategy should foster the introduction of electric vehicles in public transport,” it said.

sections and overhead devices that utilize Cepton’s Helius® Smart Lidar System with Vista®-P lidar sensors. Many of Cape Town’s roads have designated bus lanes to ensure the efficiency of public transportation, and Fibre Based Integrations’ lidar-enabled systems will allow the city technology department to gather highly accurate, real-time lane usage data to enable analytics that help identify ways to improve traffic flow and safety for motorists and pedestrians. By utilizing lidar’s outstanding perception capabilities, the systems can provide useful information such as vehicle size, traffic volume, frequency, lane positioning and potential obstructions. Based on this information, system operators can gain valuable insight about how a specific intersection or piece of road is being used – including unauthorized vehicle types in designated bus lanes, peak traffic time windows, real-time lane occupancy status, wait time at traffic lights and accidentprone areas.

Silicon Valley-based smart lidar solution provider Cepton, Inc. (Nasdaq: CPTN) (“Cepton”) and Fibre Based Integrations, an established fiber optics systems house, are working together to develop lidar-based vehicle detection solutions in Cape Town, to enable smart transportation infrastructure city-wide. This joint effort combines Fibre Based Integrations’ expertise in optics system integration and Cepton’s innovative lidar technologies to help the City of Cape Town monitor lane usage and identify vehicles using incorrect lanes. Fibre Based Integrations has deployed vehicle classification systems on traffic lights at inter-

Cepton’s lidars use a patented imaging technology called Micro Motion Technology (MMT®) to help system integrators maximize the benefit of the lidar technology. The rotation-free, mirrorless and frictionless MMT design makes Cepton lidars reliable, rugged and compact, which in turn offers ease of integration and affordability for scalable applications. Fibre Based Integrations and City of Cape Town are also exploring using Cepton’s lidars to augment the city’s analog and video systems with an additional layer of functionality and performance. The aim is to blend human and vehicle classification, enabled by lidar, with an AI platform to understand how both interact with the city environment. This will help collect useful information for traffic management and urban planning through machine learning, while minimizing disruption to people’s daily lives.

Vodacom Western Cape has invested over R1 billion in the last financial year to enable more communities in both the Western Cape’s urban and rural areas to reap the benefits of connectivity. This forms part of the company’s commitment to building a digitally inclusive society, where increased access to online essential services and information, employment and education platforms, digital marketplaces and much more can help to promote socio-economic empowerment and close the digital divide. The investment includes building 38 new 3G and 4G enabled base station sites, including 16 in townships and six in rural communities, and implementing LTE capacity upgrades to over 75% of base stations in the province. Vodacom has also built 50 new 5G base station sites in the region, which are ready for the next-generation technology roll-out. Understanding the cost to communicate is a big issue in South Africa, Vodacom has been on a pricing transformation journey to reduce data and voice rates to drive adoption across all its markets. Last year, Vodacom Western Cape introduced WhatsApp bundles from as little as R2 on the Just4You Town platform, where customers in many towns across the Western Cape can take advantage of more personalised discounted voice and data offers. Through efforts to make connectivity more affordable, Vodacom Western Cape has seen a 13% increase in data traffic and a 2.2% rise in data-active customers in the region. Access to connectivity has been a lifeline to learners facing uncertainty in returning to schools and academic institutions due to the pandemic. Expanding connectivity, especially in townships and rural areas, in the Western Cape ensures that learners can access online resources, such as Vodacom’s zero-rated e-School platform, remotely. Helping young people stay connected further, Vodacom introduced exclusive data offers to NXT LVL customers under 25 years of age in the region.

Experience Tokara in all its natural splendour when this Stellenbosch estate opens its extensive private gardens to the public for the annual Rare Plant Fair and Open Garden on Saturday, 23 April 2022. Stroll through tranquil walkways dotted with sculptures by local artists while taking in the magnificent vistas over the garden dam. The dedicated indigenous garden, textures in the cork oak forest and the fresh scents wafting from the terraces of the picking garden will appeal to all the senses. Enchanting secrets worth discovering are the fruit orchard, wetlands and the gurgling mountain stream flowing into soothing lily ponds. The latest addition to the farm’s inspiring collection of natural marvels is a Moss Garden created by neuroscientist and international moss gardener, Gert van Tonder. The garden is 100% local, with all rocks and moss originating within a few kilometres from the space that is being transformed into something that belongs at Tokara as much as it does in Japan. A wide variety of plants will be on sale from indigenous flora such as fynbos and proteas to the more exotic. This popular event will appeal to all tastes.
