Street Netball offers hope
to girls from Cape Town’s communities
The City of Cape Town unveiled the latest mural commemorating the Netball World Cup outside the CTICC, which will be the home of the quadrennial tournament for two weeks in July.
The life-size artwork, paying homage to Cape Town’s netball heritage and the Mother City, is situated on Lower Long Street between Walter Sisulu Avenue and Wharf Street. The street mural adds to a list the City commissioned across the metro since last July to raise awareness in the lead up to the upcoming international netball tournament. The large artwork will remain on the road surface for the next few months and will be part of Cape Town’s official fan park for the event.
The fan park will be situated on Cullinan Square and will be a space where fans can watch matches, enjoy live entertainment, play games and enjoy a family environment for the duration of the Netball World Cup which starts in July.
The Streets of eight Cape Town communities turned into vibrant netball courts on Friday, 21 April with the launch of Sporting Chance Street Netball – a regional street netball programme that is part of the City of Cape Town’s Countdown to The Netball World Cup.
The first official street netball games were played on 21 April, while regional finals are planned for Youth Day, 16 June 2023, and the festival finale will take place in the Fan Park next to the CTICC to coincide with the 2023 Vitality Netball World Cup.
Sponsored by the City of Cape Town and Sunbet Cares and endorsed by the Cape Town Netball Federation and Netball South Africa, Street Netball is an initiative conceived and co-ordinated by Sporting Chance, a youth sports development organisation based in Cape Town. The Street Netball programme teaches life skills through the game of netball to children who need it most.
Life skills, talent nurturing and hope for the future
Sporting Chance is a sports coaching and developing organisation established in 1990 to break down barriers and show how sports can positively change young lives. In keeping with this mission and vision, the Street Netball initiative also presents a Life Skills programme to all the girls, that will run concurrently for the eight weeks.
“The street is the ideal venue for kids to come together and do something positive and healthy,” says Brad Bing, managing director of Sporting Chance.
“The Cape Town hosted 2023 Vitality Netball World Cup should be more than a pleasant memory for South Africans,” says Bing. “It should leave a lasting legacy of promise, showing all South Africans that dreams can come true, even for the most humble. This is the time to grab the excitement generated by a world sporting event being hosted on SA ground and carry it through to a grassroots level.”
“Sport is such a powerful catalyst in this country - it truly has the power to transform lives, and we are pleased and excited to be able to use this event to take netball to the communities of Cape Town, growing the game, whilst also empowering young women with life skills education,” Bing concludes.
Do something remarkable donate blood
In December 2021, Tristan Kelly, a physically fit multi-sport athlete, was attacked by a Nyala bull, while on a family vacation in Timbavati. One horn penetrated his right calf and another through the body. He was immediately rushed to the hospital, where doctors discovered serious bleeding in his abdomen caused by a shredded iliac vein. Tristan had lost a significant amount of blood and needed 5 units of red blood cells, 5 units of fresh frozen plasma, and 6 units of cryoprecipitate.
After surviving the tragic incident, Tristan felt the need to give back to the community. He researched the need for blood in the Western Cape and discovered a significant shortage. “I felt guilty that I had taken from the system and felt obliged to give back,” said Tristan. Unfortunately, Tristan cannot donate blood himself at this time. However, he contacted the Western Cape Blood Service and arranged to host a blood donation clinic at Kelfords Ford Motors in Somerset West, where he is the Managing Director.
Tristan has held 5 Blood drives at Kelfords Ford Motors in Somerset West with over 250 units of blood donated.
The Western Cape Blood Service is a non-profit, independent organization that operates throughout the Western Cape. Its mission is to provide safe blood and blood products to all communities in the region, from Cape Town to George, without prejudice. Its goal is to be the benchmark transfusion service in South Africa.
By donating blood, you have the potential to save up to three lives.
The next blood donation clinic is scheduled for 12 May

21K magic conjure up just over R180 000 for a good cause
|City boosts
tech investment for safety
The City’s investment in its CCTV footprint is well documented, and this investment continues, guided by the CCTV Rollout Plan.
Just over R48 million has been earmarked for additional and replacement CCTV cameras around the city in the new financial year, as well as the gunshot detection technology.
The Rollout Plan advises on priority areas for CCTV installations, engagement with key stakeholders like the South African Police Service, businesses and NPOs, guidelines for the usage of data in determining CCTV locations, partnerships with private CCTV owners and a standard operating procedure for infrastructure installation.
Other technological advancements over the past decade have included: The introduction of hand-held digital devices, linked to the Emergency Policing Incident Control (EPIC) system, that has fast-tracked the logging of incidents, issuing of fines and allows for photographic evidence to be uploaded; the use of gunshot detection technology; and the introduction of dashboard-mounted ANPR devices in enforcement vehicles.
These devices, fitted with Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) software, have proven invaluable, particularly to the Traffic Service’s Highway Patrol Unit that was launched in November 2022.
The Two Oceans half-marathon heroics of City of Cape Town firefighters, Jermaine Carelse and Renaldo Duncan has left the Volunteer Wildfire Service (VWS) with a very healthy cash injection from businesses and individuals.
On Sunday 16 April, firefighters Carelse and Duncan ran the Two Oceans half marathon in their fire gear. It was their second outing, but this time, they used the spotlight to drum up support for the Volunteer Wildfire Service – a valuable partner in Cape Town’s efforts to combat wildfires.
The public was directed to the VWS digital channels to make donations. Just more than a week later, the organisation has reported that more than R180 000 was raised, thanks to the firefighters’ efforts.
“We are amazed and honoured that our friends and colleagues at the City’s Fire and Rescue Service would take on such an endeavour to raise awareness to raise funds for us. We are so grateful to these two amazing men and dedicated firefighters. We rely solely on the donations from the public and corporates to keep our organisation going, so all the funds raised will go towards maintenance and operational costs,’ said VWS CEO, Claire Lötter.
With the 2023/24 budget allocation, the Directorate plans to procure more advanced dashboard cameras with ANPR functionality, and introduce body cameras. With the proposed budget for the 2023/24 financial year, it is envisioned that the Directorate will procure 400 body cams, 50 dash-cams, 10 fixed cameras and 20 mobile cameras.
In terms of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (drones), the Directorate is using a transversal City tender to deploy drones during enforcement and emergency operations, while it completes the process of acquiring its remote operating certificate from the Civil Aviation Authority.
Over the longer term, the vision is to establish an Aviation Unit within Safety and Security.

Steenbras refurbishment and extension budget
Cape Town is the only city in South Africa to own and operate a large pumped hydro-electric scheme.
Regular maintenance and good management are imperative to ensure that the Steenbras Hydro Pump Station works well to offset high tariff and demand periods, as well as to protect City-supplied customers from stages of load-shedding where possible.
Approximately R1 billion has been set aside for the refurbishment and extension of the Steenbras Hydro Pumped Storage Scheme and approximately R200 million is earmarked for the maintenance of Steenbras.
Our menu can be described as comfort food with a modern global influence. We are well known for our aged grass-fed beef as well as the freshest local seafood. Alongside our à la carte menu, we offer a light lunch menu during the day and also have a kiddies menu. We also serve homemade, thin based pizza cooked in a wood-fired oven.
Excellent Reviews
“The investment in Steenbras and the maintenance programme is crucial to fulfilling the City’s commitment to protect customers from a stage or two of loadshedding where possible, with plans to expand protection with up to four stages in the near future as part of the load-shedding protection plan. Importantly, all Capetonians benefit directly or indirectly from the City’s power generation management and load-shedding protection as it also protects critical City infrastructure used for service provision and protects the City’s electricity network,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Councillor Beverley van Reenen.
The 160 megawatt Steenbras Hydro Pump Station (SHPS) consists of four turbines that are used to generate electricity. During peak electricity demand, it channels water from Upper Steenbras to Lower Steenbras, through the turbine generator, to create electricity. When electricity usage is low, usually between 23:00 and 07:00, the turbines pump the water back to the Upper Steenbras Dam to be re-used the next day. In this way, SHPS operates like a battery. The amount of electricity that it can generate in one day is limited by the capacity of the lower reservoir.

REGIONAL FINALISTS ANNOUNCED FOR #SACLIMATECHANGECHAMPS
The South African Climate Change Champs Renewable Energy Challenge 2023 is delighted to announce the regional finalists who will progress to the national stage of the competition. These champions of climate change will represent their school and province at the national judging round, where they will present their projects at the Enlit Africa 2023 conference in Cape Town from 16 - 18 May 2023, with the hope of being crowned as national winners.
Following the completion of the regional judging rounds, the following finalists from the Western Cape have been selected: Emil Lions from Emil Weder High School, representing the Greyton/Genadendal region, Environmentally Friendly Substances (Khanyolwethu Secondary School), and Green Divas (Diazville High School).
The competition was officially launched in January 2023 and welcomed online entries from Grade 9 - 11 learners at Climate Club host schools in the Eastern, Northern and Western Cape provinces. Learners were encouraged to imagine how renewable energy can be used to impact their communities and dream up what a sustainable future would look like for them as the future generation. To do this, participants had to select a category for which their renewable energy solution had to address and a method of entry to demonstrate their solution. The categories spanned across food, crime and safety, health and wellness, transport and mobility, and home solutions. For the method of entry, participants showcased their artistic and technical abilities in the form of a graphic or comic novel, technical model, visual art piece or poster, and video story tale.
“The purpose of the competition is to provide an accessible platform for youth voices on renewable energy to be heard and by amplifying the voices of the youth, we hope to empower them to become active citizens in responding to climate change and to be aware of the opportunities that exist for their communities for a sustainable future,” says Lindiwe Johnson, Senior Skills Development Analyst at GreenCape. The main objective was to inspire the youth to think of problems affecting their homes, schools and broader community and develop a project that shows how renewable energy can solve and address these issues.
For the next stage, regional finalists will embark on an exciting trip to Cape Town where they will attend educational workshops, go on site visits to renewable energy facilities and institutions, and exhibit and present their projects at Enlit Africa at the GreenHub on 18 May 2023.
THE PRACTICAL SIDE OF ENERGY STORAGE & ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS
Practical case studies, success stories and discussions on energy storage and alternative energy solutions will be featured in free-to-attend sessions at the upcoming Enlit Africa conference and expo, taking place from 16–18 May in Cape Town.
Enlit Africa’s programme focusing on energy storage and alternative energy solutions is paying particular attention to the priorities of the commercial and industrial sector, security and stability of power supply.
Speaker and topic highlights include: The economics of energy storage, unpacking energy storage applications as transmission and distribution asset, and a Mini-Workshop about understanding the fundamentals of electricity wheeling in a multi-stakeholder environment.
Mediclinic to become carbon-neutral by 2030
Petrus Swanepoel, Mediclinic’s Infrastructure Sustainability Manager, will unpack how his company has dealt with South Africa’s energy challenges in a presentation at Enlit Africa on “How to prepare for a successful storage project: Building the business case”.
“Our strategy is changing, and we are investigating maximising renewable energy and installing as many PV panels as possible. Yes, we will have excess power, and we want to use that excess power and store it in batteries and use these batteries during off-peak times, during loadshedding times or going forward, and if we are lucky and there is no more loadshedding, we want to use that battery storage in peak times to absorb the expensive costs of electricity during peak periods,” says Swanepoel.
“We have also embarked on a wheeling strategy, whereby we buy offsite renewable energy. That’s more of a long-term strategy. The market is developing at this stage, but to make sure that, at the end of the day, we cover our load onsite with renewables, our remaining part will be covered by offsite renewables in the form of wheeling. We have a global strategy to become carbon-neutral by 2030,” Swanepoel concludes.

RIDING LIFE
A SOUTH AFRICAN WHO SURVIVED TO INSPIRE MILLIONS
Grant Lottering’s story is one that will inspire and challenge audiences to reach beyond their limits and accomplish the impossible.
In 2013, his heart stopped after a devastating cycling crash during a race in the unforgiving Italian Alps. Doctors told him he’d never cycle again. But Grant proved them wrong. Through twelve surgeries and nearly ten years of pushing his body to its absolute limit, he not only got back on the bike but became an unstoppable force for good, raising millions for underprivileged children and inspiring countless others with his unbreakable spirit.
And now, with the release of his much-anticipated autobiography, Riding Life, co-authored by acclaimed UK author David Gardner, Grant’s story takes centre stage as he shares how he overcame impossible odds to achieve greatness.
This book is more than just a story - it’s a call to action for anyone facing insurmountable odds or struggling to find hope in a world full of darkness. With Riding Life, Grant seeks to inspire us all to reach beyond what we think is possible and tap into the boundless potential within us.
“I always knew the time would come to put pen to paper, but I decided to wait until such time that I can work with a reputable international author. That opportunity came in 2020 in the midst of the global pandemic when Unite Health Share Ministry (UHSM), US based health share organization founded on Christian values and principals, offered to sponsor my first US Im’possible Tour in 2022, as well as this book. It has been a remarkable privilege and a truly blessed experience,” says Lottering. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to be moved, inspired, and forever changed by one man’s incredible journey.
Grant Lottering is scheduled to present his book at the Franschhoek Literary Festival on May 19th from 2:30-3:30 pm at the Church Hall in Franschhoek.

In addition to her skills, Dr Musk’s leadership traits pivoted her into being the first Representative of the Consulting Dietitians of South Africa, President of the Consulting Dietitians of Canada, and Chair of the Nutrition Entrepreneurs, Academy of Dietetics and Nutrition. She has run her own nutrition business in eight cities and three countries for more than 45 years.
After attending the graduation ceremony in Bloemfontein, Musk travelled to Cape Town, where she met with Miss South Africa 2014, Rolene Strauss. In a video shared on Strauss’ social media, the pair embrace, while Strauss points out a few things they share in common.
Nutritionist, model, public speaker and international best-selling author Maye Musk, mother of Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, SpaceX and Twitter, was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of the Free State in April for her contribution to the field of dietetics.
Dr Musk says being conferred this honorary degree is the best thing that could have happened to her. She was conferred an honorary doctorate in Dietetics on 12 April on the Bloemfontein Campus.
Prof Francis Petersen, Rector and Vice-Chancellor of the UFS, said honorary doctorates are bestowed upon individuals in recognition of their outstanding
“We are from Kovsies, we are South African, then, the other thing is, something that very few people might know, and that is that you actually speak Afrikaans,” Strauss says before Musk agrees. “Ek kan Afrikaans praat.” “How amazing is that?” Strauss continued. Dr Musk adds: “Dit is wonderlik!”
During her visit to Cape Town, she was the guest of honour at a dinner and spent time promoting her book, A Woman Makes a Plan: Advice for a Lifetime of Adventure, Beauty and Success, which is currently on the bestsellers list in SA, Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe through Jonathan Ball Publishers. Her book is available in 100 countries and published in 30 languages.
YOU DON'T NEED TO BE FAMOUS TO INSPIRE OTHERS
Inspiration is often associated with celebrities, politicians, and other well-known figures in our society. However, being famous is not a prerequisite for inspiring others. Inspiration can come from anyone, regardless of their social status, age, or profession.
Every day, ordinary people do extraordinary things that have the power to inspire others. It could be a teacher who goes above and beyond to help a struggling student, a parent who sacrifices their own needs for their family, or a friend who lends a listening ear when someone is going through a tough time. These actions may seem small, but they can have a profound impact on those around them.
One does not need fame or fortune to make a difference in someone’s life. It can be as simple as a kind word, a supportive gesture, or a selfless act. These actions can create a ripple effect that inspires others to do the same. The power of inspiration lies not in the status of the person, but in the impact they make.
Sometimes the most inspiring people are those who have overcome adversity. They may not have started with privilege or resources, but through hard work, determination, and resilience, they have achieved their goals. Their stories of triumph can inspire others to persevere and chase their dreams, no matter how challenging the road may be.
Inspiration can come from anyone, anywhere, and at any time. Your actions, no matter how small, can have a significant impact on someone’s life. Always strive to be a positive influence on those around you, and you may just inspire someone to do the same.

THE SEVEN COLOURS SOUTH AFRICAN PLATE
If you’re looking for inspiration in the kitchen, look no further than Chef Ukhonaye Mconi, a dynamic rising star on the South African culinary scene.
As both a lecturer at Capsicum Culinary Studio and as a seasoned chef, Mconi brings a passion for cooking and a love of traditional South African flavours and ingredients to every dish he creates.
One of the concepts he loves to incorporate into his cooking is the Seven Colours food culture, which has become a tradition on South African tables on Sundays.
Seven Colours is a celebration of the diversity and richness of South African cuisine and is centred around the idea of having seven different dishes on the table, each representing a different colour and flavour. A standard seven colours plate could contain inyama of your choice, gravy, rice, potatoes, butternut or pumpkin, bean salad, beetroot, green beans or peas and carrots.
For Chef Mconi, Seven Colours is an important part of South African heritage: “I love the idea of having a meal that represents all the different cultures and communities in South Africa. It’s a way to bring people together and celebrate both our similarities and our differences.”
He incorporates the concept of Seven Colours into his cooking by using a variety of ingredients and flavours, and by showcasing traditional South African dishes in new and innovative ways. He is particularly skilled at using spices and herbs to enhance the flavours of his dishes, and is always on the lookout for new and exciting ingredients to incorporate into his cooking.
It’s interesting to note that Chef Mconi has come full circle in his career, having graduated from Capsicum Culinary Studio’s Cape Town campus in 2017, then working in the culinary field in the Mother City for a number of years and returning to Capsicum, this time as a lecturer, teaching at the school’s Rosebank campus in Johannesburg.
Some of Chef Mconi favourite recipes are: Rooibos and Granadilla Gin Cocktail, Tempura Broccoli and Smashed Potatoes.

Viking Deco The Lund Family's Journey
The year is 1991, the location, a small highveld town called Volksrust, Mpumalanga. Armed with a degree in agricultural science, Piet Lund sets out, hopeful to start a life with his family as a farmer.
To make ends meet, Piet starts building wooden furniture in the garage on the farm he was renting at the time. Little did he know what would then become known as “DIE HOUTERY” was the start of an exciting and eventful career in the wooden and aluminium manufacturing industry.
In 2018, Piet and his wife Jeanne made the decision to follow their dreams, to live in Cape Town. It was decided to move the entire company down with them.
Fast-forward to the present day, and we are proud to present Viking Deco, the result of 32 years’ experience in the following:
- Aluminium Doors
- Aluminium Folding Doors
- Aluminium Sliding Doors
- Aluminium Windows
- Aluminium Shopfronts
- Wooden Decks
- Wooden Pergolas
- Vinyl Flooring
- Laminated Flooring
- Engineered Flooring
- General Carpentry
ORIGIN OF THE LUND NAME
The modern day South African Lunds are of Scandinavian descent, and are direct descendants of the Vikings from the Middle Ages, hence the company name, Viking Deco. Rest assured, the family does not rebel and raid as history would suggest. The Lund name itself has a very interesting meaning…
In the early 1800s, Gustav Lund joins his uncle, the captain of a ship, on a voyage to India. During the trip Gustav gets ill with Scurvy. His uncle makes the decision to drop Gustav off at Cape Town to receive medical attention and get better with the idea that on the way back from India, Gustav will be picked up again. Gustav, being the hardworking man that he is, sets out to work after getting better. He would do odd jobs, and once finished, continue on his way. This would go on for quite a while, and finally he ended up in Kommetjie where he worked at a general store, and finally bought it and named it “Lund’s Shop”.
According to various sources, the name Lund means, “Man that lives in the woods “or “Man that works with wood from the forest”. The Lund family was not aware of this significant meaning of their name until much later into the existence of the company. It was almost as if we answered a calling by working with our hands and wood.
“We strongly believe that this is the reason why we are so passionate about what we do, and also why we are so good at it,” says Piet.
CLIENTS
“There is one thing you learn above all else with 32 years and 1000s of clients behind you, and that is that your customer service has to be on point. Whether it’s at the start where a client only requires a quote or after sales support, we strive to leave each and every client happier at the end of a job with a quality product,” Piet continues.
WHAT MAKES VIKING DECO UNIQUE
“Besides our customer service, which we are extremely proud of, what makes us unique is that from the start you deal directly with the directors and not a sales rep or a team leader. We hold ourselves to a higher standard, thus as business owners, we are accountable for everything that happens in or around a client’s home. One of the directors is also always on site with a team, while site work is being conducted and to answer any questions clients might have,” Piet concludes.

Franschhoek Literary
Festival celebrates 16th year
The charming village of Franschhoek will again be transformed into a literary hub from Friday 19th – Sunday 21st May 2023, when the Franschhoek Literary Festival celebrates its 16th year since inception.
Running for three days, a content-rich programme packed with informal discussions, lively debates, insightful conversations and inspired talks will bring together a cross-section of South African and international authors.
This year’s Franschhoek Literary Festival has a notable selection of international and pan-African authors taking part in the programme’s 80 plus sessions with about 100 authors.
The Festival will also offer Afrikaans literature as part of a rich and engaging programme. Afrikaans makes its appearance for the first time at the festival through a mix of sessions in Afrikaans and Afrikaans authors and books.
“The programme captures the times that we are in,” says Elitha van der Sandt, Franschhoek Literary Festival Director. “It digs into the dark corners as strife and upheaval creatively found its way onto the pages.”
“There is something to stimulate the intellectual curiosity of all book lovers, from traumatic and painful stories to ones that are lighthearted and fun.
“There are stories set in the wild and for those wild at heart, sparking meaningful engagement between author and reader.”
“The three-day festival provides a space for a cross-section of South African and international authors to gather to inspire, delight, inform and challenge audiences. The festival programme is curated for all South Africans and visitors who love to read books. It is attended by a cross section of book lovers, as well as writers, authors, publishers and booksellers. For more information visit www.flf.co.za
36ONE MTB Challenge
The 36ONE MTB Challenge is unquestionably one of the toughest events on South Africa’s cycling calendar. Known as the Ultimate Race, it circumnavigates the Klein Karoo, taking in 4 930 metres of climbing in 361 kilometres, between the 12th and the 14th of May this year. It does however also boast a halfdistance option, measuring just 189 kilometres with 2 900 metres of climbing, which is comfortably more than the 100 milers in the country.
This is in part due to the generous cutoffs, and in part due to the incredible support riders receive out on the route. The full distance features 11 water points, including the three check points, which help nurse solo riders and teams around the course. Especially from Check Point 2, at Volmoed, onwards many are just riding water point to water point, or oasis to oasis. Which is fine, because each one is set up to ensure the next stretch is a manageable challenge.
Hermanus will again be abuzz with visitors when the annual FynArts Festival returns to this popular seaside town from 9 – 18 June 2023 with a stimulating and entertaining arts and culture programme spanning the full ten days.
This unique fusion of an arts festival and winter school offers festival-goers a range of visual arts exhibitions, including painting, sculpture and ceramics; theatre and music performances, from soloists and intimate house concerts to ensembles and orchestras; a series of talks and presentations on arts-related and actuality topics; culinary arts, from wine tastings and talks to chef’s demonstrations and special dinners; and a variety of workshops that include everything from sculpting, painting and crafting, to writing, photography, cooking and flower arranging.
For more information visit www.hermanusfynarts.co.za
Despite the imposing nature of the tests put forth by the 36ONE MTB Challenge courses, both are infinitely finishable.
“The big unknown for 2023 is how gravel bikers will fare against the mountain bikers,” Henco Rademeyer, of Dryland Event Management, mused. “They will certainly be faster along some stretches of the course, but on others the mountain bikes will maintain a big advantage. We’ve had gravel bikers contesting and winning the Half for a few years now, but the full distance is a different beast. Perhaps the undulating but fast run, past Lategansvlei, in the final 30 kilometres will help someone on a gravel bike break Drikus Coetzee’s record of 13 hours, 17 minutes and 50 seconds?”
“The other change for this year is the location of the Half start,” Rademeyer confirmed. “Like the full 36ONE MTB Challenge, it will be starting at Kleinplaas Holiday Resort in Oudtshoorn. This means the route will be 8.5 kilometres longer, but it will be logistically much easier for the Half riders as they now also start and finish at the same point.”
