Tourism Sentiment Index (TSI) - a travel data intelligence solution created by acclaimed destination marketing agency Destination Think - has released Leading Places: The 100 Most Loved Destinations Around the World for 2021, with Knysna ranking in the top 20 at #19, Stellenbosch #23, Hermanus #41, and Cape Town #54. TSI concluded the rankings through an intensive data study - analysing more than 1.6 billion online conversations and content pieces publicly available about 21,330 global destinations - to identify the 100 ‘Most Loved Destinations’.

With the rankings confirming the destination’s popularity globally, Cape Town and the Western Cape was also very popular locally this past festive season, with domestic visitor numbers tripling between November and December 2021. Cape Town International Airport reported a recovery of 66% for domestic arrivals and 29% for international when compared to December 2019. We trust that February will bring a surge of guests to the Western Cape to experience the best our beautiful province has to offer, as many entities remain in dire straits and desperately need visitors to boost their businesses.

| South African-born Shau Mafuna joins Mercedes-AMG Formula 1 team

The Mercedes-AMG Formula 1 team expanded their staff complement with the appointment of several new members ahead of the new F1 season. One of the new employees is South African-born Shau Mafuna, who joined the team in November 2021 as a mechanical engineer. Mafuna joined the F1 team’s powertrain division - the team that supplies engines to the four teams that Mercedes-AMG powers. These teams are Mercedes-AMG, Aston Martin, McLaren, and Williams. Mafuna will be directly involved with the powertrains fitted to Lewis Hamilton’s F1 car this year. Dreams certainly do come true.

That’s the case for the South African-born mechanical engineer Shau Mafuna. Quitting has never been an option for South African mechanical engineers based in the UK. Mafuna said: “This is a dream that a certain few knows how hard we have pushed to reach this position! The last 12 months on the Work Experience Academy have been challenging but insightful and have prepared me to take up the permanent role with a lot more confidence.” “Look, it goes back where the dream started, to be an F1 driver, everyone wants to be an F1 driver for the best team in the world, Mercedes is one. Now as an engineer, you will also be part of the best in the world,” says Mafuna. He had to overcome a number of obstacles to achieve his dream. “One thing for me is South Africans are much better than they think. They are at the level we are taught is much higher – don’t doubt your skills. Trust your skills.” He’s looking forward to his dream and hopes to inspire others to follow in his footsteps. “I’m wishing all the best for those engineers, aspiring to be like me and hopefully get more South Africans on this platform, and I really believe we can do it.”

| Brace yourself Western Cape more hot weather is on the way

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has recently indicated that the extreme heat and humidity is here to stay a little longer. After the extreme heat and humidity experienced in the Western Cape this summer, SAWS said people should be prepared for hotter days in February, the hottest month on average for South Africa. There is a possibility that the Western Cape can experience hotter days, even though the seasonal outlook is indicating normal to below-normal maximum temperatures for most of the country. “South Africa is warming up, but there can be cooler years in the future,” stated the weather office. UCT Climate System Analysis Group (CSAG) deputy director Christopher Jack said these conditions would continue for the next several decades and even longer if global efforts to reduce emissions failed, proving that these conditions were indeed a symptom of climate change. The CSAG deputy director said insight into the recent humidity was more complex and required further analysis of the system that produced the heat wave.

| Cape’s Cruise Tourism Season Resumes Cape Town and the Western Cape’s Cruise Tourism Season Resumed with the arrival of the MSC Orchestra Cruise Liner. The Cruise Cape Town Initiative – a strategic project housed within Wesgro - welcomed the resumption of Cruise Tourism with the arrival of the MSC Orchestra on local shores on 12 January 2022. Having made her way from Durban to Port Elizabeth, and then to Cape Town’s recently revamped terminal. The Mother City and surrounding regions benefited from the disembarking passengers. The ship then embarked passengers and departed for a 5-night cruise and returned to Cape Town on 18 January 2022. Globally, the demand for cruising reflected a 20.5% growth in the last five years, with the Cape Town Cruise Terminal performing exceptionally well with 206 Cruise ships recorded over the last 5 cruise seasons (2015-2019). Vessels which docked at the Cape Town Cruise Terminal during the November 2018 - April 2019 cruise season collectively contributed over R2 million in spend from ship crew members. The highest spend was linked to hotels, handling processing, transport and meals for crew members. “Through attracting more cruise ships to the Mother City, other passenger ports in South Africa and on the Continent stand to capitalise on cruise tourism. ”

“Despite getting off to a slow start because of COVID regulations and Omicron, the Cruise Cape Town Initiative remains dedicated to promoting and enabling this highly profitable tourism sector in the upcoming months – to benefit our province, the rest of the country and the African continent,” concluded Wrenelle Stander, Wesgro CEO and official spokesperson for the Cruise Cape Town Initiative.

| Dr Soon-Shiong Opens Vaccine Production Campus South African-born biotech billionaire and entrepreneur Doctor Patrick Soon-Shiong, along with President Cyril Ramaphosa, officially opened the NantSA Vaccine Manufacturing Campus at Brackengate on 19 January 2022. At this event the Africa’s Access to Advanced Healthcare (AAAH) coalition with NANTSA was launched with the aim to manufacture a billion doses of the Covid-19 vaccine by 2025. Around R3 billion has been invested in establishing the facility. The NantSA Vaccine Manufacturing Campus aims to advance vaccine manufacturing and build Africa’s pharmaceutical capacity. The NantSA facility will make a vital contribution, complementing the work already being done by companies like Aspen, Biovac and Afrigen in South Africa and several other companies in other parts of the continent. It was also revealed during the launch that Soon-Shiong and his company will create a scholarship programme worth R100 million to educate and create a skilled work force in the biotechnology and life sciences industry. The coalition also aims to establish innovative manufacturing techniques to provide new treatments for life-threatening diseases including cancer, Tuberculosis and HIV/Aids. Background: Billionaire Soon-Shiong was born in South Africa. He qualified as a doctor at the University of the Witwatersrand and moved to the US, where he subsequently built a medical and business empire. Today, he is number 89 on the Forbes 400 list of the wealthiest Americans with an estimated fortune of $7.5 billion.

On Wednesday, 5 January 2022 two young men were swept out of the main beach tidal pool in front of the Jongensfontein camping area by a rip current. They were pulled into an extremely dangerous situation where they could not swim back into the tidal pool and risked being washed against the rocks. It was clear that they were rapidly tiring.

The Transporter-3 mission from expat Elon Musk’s SpaceX lifted off on 13 January 2022 with three nanosatellites locally produced by Cape Peninsula University of Technology’s (CPUT) students with enhanced monitoring capabilities at the US space force station in Cape Canaveral. In a first for South Africa, a trio of locally produced Maritime Domain Awareness Satellites (MDASat) was launched in accordance with government’s efforts to track and monitor the country’s maritime traffic. The R27-million project has been mandated by the Department of Science and Innovation to enhance South Africa’s oceanic sovereignty. On a small scale, the country has been involved in space activities since the dawn of the space age in 1957 and even assisted with the Apollo Programme that put man on the moon. Etnard Louw, CPUT satellite system engineer, said that they’d been working on the project for the past three years. Innovation: African Space Innovation Centre (ASIC) team is happy with the progress made by the Marine Domain Awareness Satellites mission, which was successfully launched. The team has achieved the first milestone with the three satellites, which is to communicate with them and receive the beacon from each satellite.

A number of people on the beach noticed that the two teenagers were in difficulty and when one of the swimmers waved an arm, indicating that they needed assistance, three sixteen-year-old friends ran to their tent to get their fins and their body boards to go and help.

Acting Chief Engineer on the project, Nyameko Royi says: “At 22:55 hours after the launch we managed to receive the beacon from all three satellites and verified their status with correct battery voltage, the status of the On-Board Computer Image and deployment of the UHF antennae.”

The lifeguards had left the beach for the day as their duty was finished, and were not available. The three youngsters all sixteen years old, had the forethought to take an extra body board with them as well as a lifeguard’s torpedo buoy and the Pink Rescue Buoy 31-07 which was sponsored by FEM. They quickly reached the two swimmers who were exhausted. The Pink Rescue Buoy and body board was used to help the two float and regain their strength. Without the bravery of these three young men, the two swimmers (both approximately 14 years old) may have drowned. The rescue was well planned and the three rescuers made sure that they had ample flotation for themselves and for the two who were in difficulty. The rapid response with ample emergency flotation saved two lives without risking the lives of the rescuers. This is highly commendable. The Pink Rescue Buoy, which helped one boy to float means that the Pink Buoys have been used to save 91 lives that we know of at the date of writing. “We managed to also send telecomands to the satellites and successfully received the telemetry.” Book a Table

Royi adds that the team has not experienced any serious challenge as yet, “although we did have Satellite A booting into fail-safe mode, but that was sorted immediately by requesting the OBC to reset and within the following pass the issue was resolved.” He says the team is currently in the process of commissioning the Altitude Determination Control System which provides a total control of the satellite’s orbit, that is going to take about two weeks. Reflecting on the progress made since the launch, Royi says: “We are all excited about the project, we are hopeful that we are not to experience any major concerns from the satellites. Regarding the ZACube-2, we have six passes a day we have three in the morning, and we have another three in the evening,” Royi elaborates. In addition, Royi says: “I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in the project, current CPUT employees and former colleagues. I would like to extend this appreciation to other companies that support our mission, being directly or indirectly involved with the mission.”

Jess van Dyk to open new restaurant in Stellenbosch Stellenbosch’s Old Post Office on the corner of Bird and Plein street will soon welcome a new eatery called Post & Pepper; the brainchild of chef and owner Jess van Dyk and restaurant manager Dimitri Hadzigrigoriou, both formerly of Franschhoek’s Protégé restaurant. Jess was previously Head Chef at Eat Out Restaurant of the Year in 2019, La Colombe, before taking the helm at Protégé and assisting with the expansion of the group into Franschhoek. Hadzigrigoriou joins the team and has honed his world-class service style at some of South Africa’s top restaurants: The Test Kitchen, Epice and Protégé. Jess’s vision is to celebrate her own South African food heritage, mixed with global influences, in a casual space (the restaurant will be situated in the heart of the bustling university town).

“We want to offer everything that guests love about the ‘fine dining restaurant experience’, but without any of the stiffness,” says the chef. “Or the intimidating price tag!” adds Dimitri with a shy smile. Guests can look forward to reinvented classics from Jess’s childhood in the Northern Cape, such as koeksisters, lieslap or skaapstertjies on the braai. Post & Pepper will be about family-style dining, with dishes that can be shared (or not!) depending on the occasion. “We prefer not to bind our patrons by any rules, they should feel comfortable and right at home” adds Jess. “Our first goal is to create delicious food. Our second goal is to turn our guests into regulars, and ultimately: friends.” Post & Pepper is due to open in mid-February 2022 for lunch and dinner.

Stellenbosch StreeT Soirées Experience Stellenbosch in all its good-living glory during the town’s annual Street Soirées, a series of relaxed food-and-wine tastings underway from the end of this month. 2022 CAPE TOWN CYCLE TOUR The Cape Town Cycle Tour, presented by Pick n Pay, is all set for March 13, 2022 with a limited field of 22 500 expected and a pre-race Expo confirmed. This year’s event will be the 44th edition. Last year the Cape Town Cycle Tour was postponed to October 10 as a result of Covid restrictions with a limited field of 18 000. This year organisers have confirmed a larger capacity, but Covid protocols will still apply. “After missing out on our traditional March date last year, we are delighted to be back to our usual date in 2022,” event director, David Bellairs said. “Last year we were oversubscribed with our limited field and glad that we can now expand the entry limit to accommodate more riders in 2022.” Organisers also confirmed that the traditional pre-race Expo will go ahead this year, after being limited in 2021.

The Expo will take place at the Cape Town Stadium as part of the registration process. Details of the registration process are still to be announced, but Covid protocols will be in place as was the case in 2021. “The safety of our riders during registration and the race itself is our top priority,” Bellairs continued.
