It’s easy to get caught up in consumerism during the holiday period, trying to decide what to buy someone for Christmasfighting the crowds in the malls to get your shopping done in time.

The best gift in the world can’t be bought in a store, wrapped in pretty paper, and tucked under a Christmas tree. Yet, it’s the one thing that we wish for above all others.

No matter what you do or purchase this holiday season, may you be rich in all the priceless things that money can’t buylove, companionship, happiness, fun, adventure and health!

What is the perfect gift? The best gift of all is one that comes from your heart.

Memories are built by experiences, and this is what I would like you to consider this holiday season.

The Greatest Gifts are Priceless Memories

As parents, we want to create as many meaningful, memorable moments for our children.

Give them the gift of memories, something that will create a joyful moment to remember forever. But as adults, when we look back over all the holidays, it’s the one thing we remember above all others - time spent with family shines through all of our memories.

It is easier to connect with others when we experience things together, spend time in one another’s company, or share a common activity. In our busy lives, we need to grab as much downtime as possible to de-stress and relax, and sharing fun experiences, is a pleasurable way of doing this.

Quality time with your family is priceless. Give the gift of an adventure, plan a trip, buy some tickets to an event, a concert, a movie or a musical performance.

“The greatest gift you can give someone is your time. By giving your time, you are giving a portion of your life that you will never get back.”

Fill your life with experiences, not things. Have stories to tell, not stuff to show.

Wake up to panoramic views and experience world-class attractions, fun things to do, delicious food and award-winning wines.

| Linda Potgieter Bungee Jumps

23 Times In 1 Hour, Breaking World Record

216 m (708 ft) above the Bloukrans River.

On the day of Potgieter’s official attempt, she stepped off the platform and hurtled towards the river below with her arms spread like an eagle, and that’s when her one-hour timer began. A few jumps later, she started to tire, however, she was determined to break the previous record, and she continued with her jumps. By the time she completed her 19th jump, she could barely stand, but she continued. Potgieter completed her 23rd jump with just over a minute to spare.

While the adventurous sport might not look like much of a physically demanding sport, doing it for a whole hour requires a lot of core strength and cardiovascular fitness. Linda admits that her body was exhausted during the feat, but she gained mental control over her fatigue and kept going.

Potgieter took up adventure sports 30 years ago as a way to cope with trauma and the difficulties that she faced as a child. For her, it’s a way of pushing through a lifelong struggle with fear and the mental blockages that came with it.

I can do this!

“I chose adventure sports to help me get through all of that because I just thought, ‘if I jump out of a plane, if I can jump off a bridge, and if I can get those things right, then I think I can get my mind right,’ and that’s exactly what happened. What started as building my confidence and breaking through my fear and barriers actually became a way of life,” Linda said.

“I believe, and I experienced that once you break the fear of this thing that you’re petrified of doing, freedom is waiting right on the other side – freedom of your mindset, freedom [towards believing].”

“I can do this, and now, if I can do this, I can wear that red dress, I can launch that business, I can write that book.”

Western Cape Minister of Finance and Economic Opportunities, Mireille Wenger, said: “Tourism is a major contributor to the Western Cape, supporting almost 175 000 jobs and generating roughly R15.5 billion in gross value added to the economy in 2019. Not only do these flights boost tourism, but they also provide great opportunities to export proudly Western Cape goods via air cargo.”

United Airlines Cultural Ambassadors Program

The Newspaper met up with two United Airline Flight Attendants, Deon and Elaine Prinsloo joining the Cape Minstrels singing South African folk songs, as part of the inaugural celebrations at the airport.

Having grown up in Pretoria, Deon and Elaine left South Africa in 2000 to secure a new future for their family in the USA. In February 2015 Elaine joined United Airline, and Deon, witnessing his wife living her dream, decided to join United Airlines in May 2016.

The first passengers to ever fly the non-stop service from Washington Dulles Airport stepped onto the Cape Town International Airport tarmac on 16 November – greeted by local officials, Todd Haskell, USA Consul General, members of the Western Cape government and the City of Cape Town, Wesgro’s Cape Town Air Access team, and our local talented Cape Minstrels band.

United Airlines officially expanded its service to Cape Town with three non-stop flights per week, year-round, between Washington Dulles Airport (IAD) and Cape Town International Airport (CTIA). This complements their year-round Newark/ New York service that is already flying three times per week to Cape Town. The route positions United Airlines as the first carrier to provide a non-stop, roundtrip service from Washington, D.C. to Cape Town, and will connect customers via United’s Washington Dulles hub to over 60 destinations across the Americas.

With the existing Newark - Cape Town route expected to contribute an estimated R523-million worth of direct tourism spend within the airline’s first year of operation (June 2022-May 2023), the Washington Dulles – Cape Town route is also anticipated to become a major boost for the Western Cape economic engine. The United States has historically been Cape Town’s third-largest international market, with two-way passenger volumes between the United States and Cape Town equalling 213 000 passengers in 2019.

As a married couple, travelling extensively, they were selected in 2019 to become part of the United Airlines Cultural Ambassadors Program – a program set out to connect Americans and South Africans, building the bridge between the two countries to unite families, and cultures – connecting people. Uniting the world.

On 22 November 2019 Deon and Elaine, as Cultural Ambassadors did the first ever inaugural United Airline Flight from New Ark, New York to Johannesburg. To them, it is a great joy bringing the South African culture as United Airline Flight Attendants to the many passengers travelling with the airline throughout the world. Wherever they are on a flight, they strive to comfort the passengers.

| City to expand on key programmes to drive economic growth, jobs | Lift airline completes the

The City has announced that it has renewed its appointment of Wesgro, Cape Town and the province’s investment promotion agency, to expand on key programmes that have helped to drive economic growth and job opportunities. The City has prioritised goals within specific industries or sectors that are drivers of a more inclusive and sustainable economy.

These are: The Air Access initiative to secure more flights from our key sources markets to increase travel and trade; The Cruise Cape Town programme, first conceptualised in the city’s Tourism Development Framework in 2019, positioning the metro as a homeport for world and regional cruise travel; Promoting the city’s investment profile, particularly within the technology and health tech fields, and export potential via platforms such as the online Cape Trade Portal; and Deepening the positioning of Cape Town as an ideal host destination for business events through the Convention Bureau project.

These programmes have helped Cape Town weather recent global economic storms.

“By March next year, we are expecting up to 191 international flights per week, amounting to approximately 1.5 million two-way seats and generating around R7,9 billion in tourist spend. Turning oceanward, we are welcoming a total of 75 ship visits from 26 cruise ships carrying more than 195 000 visitors. With almost R100 million in total estimated passenger spend per port visit, this travel market alone will generate numerous jobs across multiple industries.”

“Meanwhile, the Cape Trade Portal now hosts over 600 registered exporters with more than 3 000 products. “Everything we do is geared towards helping Capetonians to unlock their potential, whether that means opening their own business or acquiring the skills to become part of a major company. Through these initiatives, we are realising these goals.”

golden triangle, CPT - JHB - DUR

Domestic airline Lift is open for business between Cape Town and Durban, just in time for the festive season. The addition of this route allows for added capacity to the growing the domestic market.

To date Lift operates the CPT-JNB and JNB-DUR, route. As of 25 November, Lift introduced the last leg, the popular domestic DUR-CPT route, thereby completing the golden triangle – now servicing the three major cities in South Africa.

“Not only will this add much-needed capacity, but will also offer passengers a real premier-class alternative,” said Jonathan Ayache, co-founder and CEO.

Walking into Henri’s, you’ll be greeted by the owner, Pierre and his staff, who will treat you like guests in our own home. Henri’s combines an inspired menu with a casually sophisticated setting in a heritage house conveniently situated on Somerset West Main Road.

We also welcome larger groups, our top floor has been renovated and can be used for private functions. Our inviting, comfortable dining room is the perfect place to enjoy a great meal.

The current state of the airline industry has resulted in thousands of talented and experienced people being available. “We‚ve been fortunate to onboard a group of truly special and talented people‚ to help us build this new airline. Every single person on the team has high energy levels‚ a can-do attitude and a customerfocused‚ problem-solving ability. Having these kinds of people within our fold can only lead to good things.”

What makes Lift better when it comes to the selection of an airline? “Our whole philosophy is to focus and make the experience for customers the best experience they can have on an airline,” says Jonathan.

The real magic flying Lift is the ground staff and crew with their friendly smiles and willingness to help, solve problems, and make sure customers have a memorable flight.

Lift is not a low-cost airline, but if you book in advance, you may be pleasantly surprised at their competitive rates. When it comes to seating - more legroom is provided in comparison to other airline carriers in South Africa.

One of Lift’s key values is flexibility. Customers can change their booking up to 24-hours before departure without further costs, regardless of what kind of ticket purchased – no penalties, no cancellation fees.

Concerning delays and cancellation, Lift will communicate such delay by SMS. LIFT Credits are instantly deposited into your LIFT Wallet following a flight cancellation or when a change in flight results in a lower fare, to compensate for the inconvenience.

Our menu can be described as comfort food with a modern global influence. We are well known for our aged grass-fed beef as well as the freshest local seafood. Alongside our à la carte menu, we offer a light lunch menu during the day and also have a kiddies menu. We also serve homemade, thin based pizza cooked in a wood-fired oven.

“We will also have our dog-friendly flights as an option between Durban and Cape Town,” Ayache, concluded.

For the early morning coffee drinker, Lift partnered with Vida e-Caffé, to ensure you get only the best in coffee. Plated meals are served in the premier class, and a snack in the economy class. All drinks are complementary.

International passengers will also benefit from the added connection as they travel between Cape Town and other popular tourist destinations in South Africa.

Ferdinanos

Voted SA Best Pizza Restaurant

Colourful and quirky, Ferdinano’s Pizza serves South Africa’s favourite pizza, according to diners who voted the establishment into top spot in this year’s Porcu pine Ridge Pizzeria Challenge.

Owner Italian Diego Milesi dedicated the win to his late partner Kimon (Kiki) Bisogno who died in a shark attack in Plettenberg Bay in September.

“The staff and I celebrated when we heard of our victory. However, it was a bitter-sweet moment because we were missing her. She was our motivational spirit and was always filled with such great ideas. I am busy putting my energy into replicating what she did and keeping it going. She always valued people first, and it is a tribute to her that as a small micro-business in Observatory, we have done so well.”

“Kimon would have been thrilled with the win. She was excited about everything in life, and that included this competition. It is such a tribute to the colourful and loving person that she was. She connected with the people in our community, and we succeeded in no small measure because of her hard work.”

Milesi explained how it felt to take the title and why they decided to enter: “My mission has always been to bring passion to our chefs and get them to love what they are doing; it isn’t simply a job. We have always wanted people to feel at home at our establishment. We have always wanted to bring the best Italian food - made with passion and consistency - to our customers, and the win gives me a lot of confi dence that we are doing just that.”

He explains why he believes cus tomers have embraced Ferdinando’s.

“I have always said that running a restaurant is not a business, but a lifestyle. You have to fit into the requirements of your area and community. We always try to do it with a smile on our faces. It is about a place with a vibe and quality food without being pretentious. We try and show the love for what we do in our food.”

Bisogno, a South African artist, met Milesi during her international travels. They fell in love, relocated to the Mother City, and decided to share their love of pizza with Capetonians.

e property came under new, private ownership in 2017. From the onset the young and dynamic team lead by winemaker, L’Ré Hughes, and viticulturist, Nico Nortje, wanted to protect the natural resources on the property through regenerative farming practices. With a focus on Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Cinsault and Chardonnay, the team set out on an aggressive replanting strategy. For the past five years Stellenzicht has been replanting vineyards and re-establishing natural eco corridors as part of their eforts to keep nature in balance on the property.

Stellenzicht Wines

pursuing excellence through sustainability and regenerative farming

“e beautiful blend of Cabernet and Shiraz is such an elegant expression of the property, with the Cinsault acting like salt and pepper that just amplifies all the aromatics of the other two varieties.”

Stellenzicht’s varietal range is a true presentation of the three red varieties planted on the property. e Tristone Cabernet Sauvignon is a great expression of the Cabernet grown on the three diferent terroirs on the property. Its fresh fruit coming from the bottom of the property with its Kofieklip soils, the pencil lead and fine tannins from the mid slopes with its decomposed sandstone soils and the structure and mouthfeel coming from the top of the property with is rocky sandstone soils. All in all, giving this wine an unprecedented elegance and grace.

e Arenite Syrah refers to the rocky sandstone soils where most of the blocks are planted. e current Syrah block in production originated from plant material taken from the original Syrah block that gave way to the infamous 1994 Stellenzicht Syrah that beat out the Penfolds Grange in a blind tasting. “It is such an honor to work with this Syrah block, while continuing the heritage of Syrah at Stellenzicht” says L’Ré.

e understone Rosé is a Shiraz based wine with a very delicate yet fragrant nose of red berries, but with a delicious and morish finish on the pallet. Your perfect summer partner.

Rooted in Nature

Hughes’ winemaking philosophy is rooted in nature; all great wines start in the vineyards. L’Ré and Nico spend a lot of time walking the vineyards, talking to industry leaders and adjusting their strategy where needed. L’Ré explains, “I love my job and happiest in the cellar, but for me those unique lavours profiles start in the vineyards and my excitement for harvest really kicks in when we are in the vineyards tasting the berries. e potential of the grapes, the possibilities and the puzzle pieces start coming together in my head while in the vineyard. en my job is a simply in the cellar, I’m a mere custodian of those lavours and aromatics. Hopefully I get to add a touch a magic along the way, let’s call it my artistic touch.”

is philosophy and passion have been evident in the awards her wines received in the past year, walking away with a Double Gold and two Gold medals at the recent Veritas awards.

As the soils were being prepared to be replanted, the team picked up some strange looking rocks that turned out to be Acheulean hand-axes. Acheulean is a period within the Stone age where humans not only used sharp objects, but started crating their own tools. is discovery of the hand-axes was made even more significant with a title deed relating to the property dating back to the 1800’s where it stated that the property was “…not good for crop, only cattle. Too many rocks.” It was the moment the team realized that the soil and terroir they were standing on with these rocks is the true history and heritage of the property.

Flagship wines

is also gave way to the name of Stellenzicht’s lagship wines, the Acheulean Red blend and Acheulean Chardonnay. e Acheulean Red is a red blend consisting of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Shiraz and 15% Cinsault.

e Silcrete Cinsault is a perfumy expression of this red fruit driven variety, with an earthiness on the pallet and lacy, but juicy tannins. A summer red with so much personality.

L’Ré explains what they found as they dug deeper into the history surrounding the property, “We learnt of a great tale… people didn’t realize that these Acheulean hand axes had significance and thought that it was the result of lightning hitting the rocks. e Dutch use to call it Dondersteentjies, which we translate to understone.” Stellenzicht understone range consist of three exciting wines all crated for their drinkability, outstanding fruit expressions as well as afordability.

Eco-Wine Pod

Stellenzicht opened their new brand home, an eco Wine Pod, in December 2022. is Eco-pod is an extension of the brand’s philosophy towards balance and sustainability. e building is 80% recyclable and is perched on crow’s feet with no concrete foundations allowing nature to continue co-existing alongside the building. e Wine pod ofers wine tastings, wine sales and for the peckish a selection of wood-fired pizzas or cheese and charcuterie platters. Sitting under the trees and surrounded by natural fynbos, this is your perfect summer outing.

e wine is a great expression of uncompromised intense blue fruit, loral notes and fine integrated tannins from the Cabernet; richness, spice and tobacco notes from the Shiraz; and a hint of freshness from the Cinsault. Winemaker, L’Ré, explains the philosophy behind this wine: “e wine was made to stand the test of time, much like its name’s sake.”

e understone Red is a Cinsault based blend with great red fruit and sot tannins, complimented by the warm spice and savoury notes from the Shiraz and the Cabernet Sauvignon adding some structure and length to the pallet.

“Our understone Chardonnay is a quintessential expression of Stellenbosch fruit, with yellow stone fruit aromatics bouncing from the glass and the subtle oak rounding out the edges of the pallet to give a beautiful creamy finish,” says Hughes.

Stellenzicht’s continuous efort and drive toward balance and excellence is embodied in the brand’s logo consisting of a dragonly intertwined with the SZ of Stellenzicht. Dragonlies are a great bioindicator of health in an ecosystem. e team notes that the logo is their constant reminder of where they are heading. Creating balanced wines from nature in balance. A consistent pursuit of balance.

Downhill All the Way – Inspiring Youth Using an Old Oil Can

Not every motorsport race is about winning; some times, it’s the taking part that really counts, and the impact that a team can have simply by participat ing. The Red Bull Box Cart Race, held on Sunday, 6 November in Cape Town’s historic Bo-Kaap district, was a great example.

The famous pastel-coloured houses and cobbled streets of Bo-Kaap formed a serene backdrop for the ultimate box cart event, with a large crowd turning out to cheer on the home-made pocket rockets as they hurtled down the specially designed 600 metre course.

In a great example of repurposing, the Squadra Corse team of Lance Shisinwawa and Thabang “Tubs” Siima plus driver Baksi Komane approached Motul for assistance, and that’s how their box cart came to be constructed from a Motul oil drum – with the famous red and white colours making it into the finished design. Although winning was never the aim, Squadra Corse recorded an unofficial tied third place.

“For Squadra Corse, the Red Bull Box Cart Race was an opportunity not to go faster, but to spread our message of hope further, and to connect with more Western Cape communities,” explained Elijah Gumbi, founder and owner of Squadra Corse. “Ulti mately, we want to inspire young people to believe that even if life sometimes seems like an uphill strug gle, they can make a positive difference,” he added.

Squadra Corse was founded in 2012 and has achieved a dominant position on the South African go-karting scene. Their drivers have won multiple titles over the last decade, yet they do not consider their successes on the track to be their greatest achievement.

Their development programmes are focused on helping youngsters get into go-karting, and to reach their dreams both on the racetrack and in life. Squadra Corse aims to provide industry-leading service offerings in terms of driver, engineer and mechanic training, workshop support and race logistics.

With the emphasis on having fun whilst sharing their vital message of hope, the Squadra Corse team at the Red Bull Box Cart Race was inspired by the unique design of their cart to come up with a very appropriate race motto: “I-CAN, U-CAN and together “We-CAN” make a difference in our communities, families and social envi ronments, to encourage each other and also be a great example to others of what can be achieved.”

Success leaves clues – The Steven Spielberg story

This is where he developed his love of storytelling. He dreamed of being a movie director from childhood. He created his first short film at the age of 12 and contin ued to make movies throughout his teenage years – during this time his dreams never subsided.

How Spielberg broke into Universal Studios is a legend in the movie industry. He took the Universal Studios Tour to get an inside look at the movie business. Steven sneaked off the tram and hid between two sound stages until the tour ended. When he left at the end of the day, he made a point of saying a few words to the guard at the gate.

For three months he passed the guard daily, neatly dressed in a suit, carrying a briefcase, letting the guard believe he was one of the students with a summer job at the studio. He made a point of speaking and befriending directors, writers and editors. He even moved into a vacant office. He also made it his business to get to know the head of production of the studio’s television arm, Sid Sheinberg, who gave him a contract with the studio.

There is no doubt that Steven Spielberg is one of the most successful filmmak ers in history. Through his role in developing, directing, and driving the special effects of many of the biggest blockbusters in movie history, including Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T., Saving Private Ryan, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones series and Schindler’s List, to name a few. Spielberg changed the way movies are made and left an indelible mark on popular culture.

His biography traces his rise from shooting films as a shy young boy with the family’s 8 mm camera to his first unpaid job at Universal Studios, to the rise of DreamWorks, the studio Spielberg founded and quickly turned into a filmmaking powerhouse.

“You shouldn’t dream your film, you should make it”, Spielberg quoted. Why? Because we believe success leaves clues. We believe every story possesses hidden insights that can teach us, guide us, and benefit us in unimaginable ways. If you’re ready to get inspired, and learn a thing or two about success, then let’s dive into Steven Spielberg’s Story of achievement.

Spielberg’s father was a qualified electrical engineer and his mother was a concert pianist. The family moved around a lot when Spielberg was growing up, as his father took various jobs in different cities. This led to Spielberg often feeling like an outsider. He was regularly bullied as a child because he was unable to keep up with the pace of the other kids his age. He also had the learning disability dyslexia, which also invited criticism and judgement from his teachers.

In an effort to combat this, Spielberg took refuge in movies. He became obsessed with them, and would often go to the cinema multiple times a week.

Finally, in 1974, Steven Spielberg had an opportunity to work on his first theater-released film, “The Sugarland Express”. This caught the attention of The Hollywood Reporter and put his name on the map. This led to an offer to direct “Jaws”, a blockbuster film that would become one of the highest-grossing films of all time and establish Spielberg as a Hollywood heavyweight. “E.T. the Extra-Terres trial”, released in 1982, was another one of Spielberg’s more personal works.

Spielberg is now one of the most successful and well-respected directors in Hollywood. His films have grossed billions of dollars and have won numerous awards. He is truly a Hollywood legend and is still directing films to this very day

He believes that by giving back, he can inspire young people to do the same incredible things that he has achieved. Furthermore, he once said, “The past may dictate who we are, but we get to determine what we become.”

He reminds us that it is never too late to pursue our dreams and that by giving back, we can make a difference in the lives of others. With that said, we hope this Steven Spielberg Success Story has inspired you to shoot for the stars, and believe that you too can accomplish great things.

SA's new ground station to help NASA track space flights

A new deep-space ground station being built in South Africa’s semi-desert Karoo region will come online by 2025 to help track history-making NASA missions to the moon and beyond, space agency officials said.

This impressive collaboration between the South African National Space Agency (SANSA), an entity of the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), and the USA’s National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), is to invest in a Deep Space Ground Station, in Matjiesfontein, right here in the Western Cape.

The collaboration seeks to assist NASA in achieving the objectives of the Artemis programme, to further explore the moon’s surface and to send the first astronauts to Mars. To achieve this mission, NASA plans to implement three new ground sta tions that will provide near-continuous communications support to missions up to two million kilometres from Earth through NASA’s Near Space Network.

Matjiesfontein, which is only the third primary site being developed globally, will become part of a network of other ground stations in the United States and Aus tralia. Designed with an array of antennae, including a three-storey, 20 metre (22 yard) diameter dish being procured by NASA, the station will help improve cover age and redundancy for critical mission support to the moon, Mars and beyond, officials said.

The South African National Space Agency (SANSA) will establish, operate and maintain the station. Close to key communication and transport infrastructure, the remote site was chosen due to its geographic location with clear skies and low radio interference.

South Africa has committed an initial 70 million rand ($3.93 million) to build the infrastructure and communications needed to ready the site, part of the govern ment’s investment in building its space infrastructure and research base.

At a meeting with the US Consul General, a team from NASA, their SANSA counterparts, and Wesgro officials, Western Cape Premier Winde enthused: “This takes the province’s relationship with

Eco-Schools programme leads learners towards sustainability

Learners at 18 schools around the country have been supported by Sun International in a two-year partnership with the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) as they create eco-classrooms to build environ mental resilience in schools and their communities.

Sun International donated just over a million rand to support the programme in schools in areas surrounding their properties, Cape Town’s GrandWest hotel and casino. The programme kicked off in August and runs until the end of July 2023 involving over 450 learners ranging from Grade 6 to 10.

“Education gives people the skills and knowledge to be better prepared for, and better able to recover from, natural hazards. With knowledge and skills, they can adapt more flexibly. With our educational programmes, WESSA hopes to inspire the next generation to advocate and act for a healthy planet they are proud of,” WESSA senior project manager Nomfundo Ndlovu said.

“Sun International Eco-Schools project will support schools with the creation of eco-classrooms where learners, teachers and school leadership will use the eco-schools seven steps framework to chart a way to building resilience in their schools and communities,” said Sun International’s SED Manager Heidi Edson. The steps are: Write an ecocode, form an eco-committee, do an environmental review, develop an action plan, monitor and evaluate, link to the curriculum, inform and involve others. Schools will also select specific themes that will give them specific focus areas for their projects.

“The learners will gain much from participating in the programme, from science learnings to values, knowledge about plants and animals, human and environmental health, to practical skills such as learning how to separate recycling and how to plant indigenous plants.” Soft skills include self-confidence, leadership abilities, critical thinking and the will to act and advocate.

Snapping images of leopards in the Little Karoo

Followers of the Cape Leopard Trust (CLT) may be wondering what the field research team has been up to after our Tale of Two Leopards, Overberg survey concluded earlier in 2022. “The exciting answer is that our camera traps are pres ently active, snapping images of leopards in the Little Karoo!”

Intensive camera trapping research conducted by the CLT in the Little Karoo (Gamkaberg/Rooiberg corridor) in 2012, combined with a re-survey by Panthera in 2017, confirmed that leopards in this region, like elsewhere in the Western Cape, occur at a much lower population density compared to leopards in the Savannah biome.

The CLT is currently conducting another large-scale camera trap survey in the Little Karoo to obtain an up-to-date population density estimate, which will be com pared to previous values. This will enable us to track changes in the Little Karoo leopard population over time, and to apply the necessary conservation interven tions in partnership with the local community and conservation organisations.

The survey consists of 64 paired camera stations distributed across ± 2000 km2 of the Little Karoo landscape. The survey is being conducted in collaboration with CapeNature, with 29 stations falling within the Swartberg, Gamkaberg and Ruitersbos Nature Reserves. The remaining 35 stations are on private properties involving 26 different landowners – as always, the CLT is extremely grateful for the willing participation of so many landowners in granting us access to do our research!

In conjunction with the research, the CLT’s education team is also planning environmental education activities aimed at schoolchildren in the region, and our conservation team will be delivering training and support for livestock and game

farmers to mitigate conflict with leopards and other predators, and to promote holistic farm management methods that protect nature, benefit farmers and improve food security.

Always seek the seed of triumph in every adversity

Michael Stumpfe, founder and designer of Bummel shoes, meets you with gentle eyes, a kind spirit, a confident firm handshake, and his Leatherman fixed to his side.

What Bummel is all about?

Bummel Shoes was launched in November 2018 and designs and manufactures genuine leather footwear for the whole family. “We at Bummel shoes make the most comfortable handcrafted leather shoes with only the best quality leather and stitching. No synthetic materials touch one’s feet – we use leather uppers, leather insoles, and leather linings. Our shoes are made with local leathers to last.”

The name of his business originates from the German word “bummeln”, meaning to take a leisurely stroll. “We strive for utter comfort when someone wears our shoes.”

Michael’s father, Rolf, was the founder of Der Lederhändler, a manufacturer of leather products. It is in this environment of creative craftsmanship that he grew up. “I have a passion to make beautiful quality leather shoes. The German in me is passionate about quality.”

“I was in absolute awe walking through the Bummel workshop and looking at how each leather piece is handcrafted into a ready-to-wear shoe. According to my husband, Bummel shoes are the most comfortable shoes he has ever worn, says a client.”

Background

After school, Michael started with a three-year apprenticeship in shoe manufacturing in Germany. “It is here where I learned to work with every machine. He then studied shoe design for two years, after which he worked for 8 years in the design department at Kennel and Schmenger in Pirmasens, Germany. He then returned to South Africa and worked as a designer at Watsons Shoes in the Southern Cape making men’s, women’s, and children’s shoes.

His father and his father-in-law act as his biggest mentors in running his business suc

Designs and product development

cessfully. “My dad is one of those guys who can do anything, and my father-in-law is an extremely skilled businessman. Having them both as mentors offer the perfect mix of skills and play a huge role in Bummel’s success.”

“We have a small team of 10 hand-picked people who have embraced our quality and standard of producing shoes. After 21 years of working in this field, together with my dad’s experience, we’ve gained valuable knowledge and skills which are of great value to our business.”

Michael succeeds in the magic of designing and manufacturing classic, comfortable yet trendy shoes. You can find anything from the traditional brown leather shoe to a yellow, bright red or Nguni-skin shoe.

“I don’t follow fashion trends as my main focus is to make shoes that are timeless and comfortable, however, I take into account customer needs and trends if it can work with our signature and look.”

His biggest lesson in life Michael states it short and simple. “There is nothing I can do without God. Even the fire we recently had, destroying stock and leather, was a blessing in disguise as we had to upgrade our factory, but never had the time to do. The fire brought us to a halt and allowed us to do this for the better.”

Advice to young entrepreneurs Michael breaks it down into two simple tips - of which he is a living example. “Start right at the bottom. Spend time in the trenches. It is here where one masters the skills. Although I design shoes, I also have the skills to make the shoes I design. This becomes a great attribute towards understanding the operations of your business. Secondly, you need to be good to people – especially those working with you.”

Bummel boundaries

Michael expanded the Bummel boundaries by opening a shop in the Rosebank Mall, Johannesburg, in June 2021.“I am very excited as many people contact us from Gauteng enquiring where they can go to view and fit Bummel shoes. This is the first step to expand the Bummel footprint into the rest of the country.”

For fun

The stars in his eyes lit when Michael speaks about his wife and five boys. He strives to be an involved and present family man to ensure that he nurtures a healthy family. They love spending time together and do everything in their ability to make home an exciting and adventurous place. With a bike and go-kart track right around the house and a tree house providing hours of fun, their boys can play their hearts out.

SA's second hand clothing market set to boom

Yaga, a female-founded social e-commerce company that enables people to buy and sell pre-loved fashion online, has raised €2.2 million (R39.3 million) to grow its platform in South Africa and in emerging markets in Africa and Asia.

Offering a localised and secure online second-hand fashion experience, Yaga is a pioneer in the second-hand fashion industry, which is still in its infancy in Africa and Asia – unlike in Europe and the US, where the social e-commerce market

is robust, thanks to companies like Vinted and Depop. Having previously relied on angel investments, Yaga raised the €2.2 million funding from investors in the Baltics.

Launched in 2019, Yaga quickly became one of South Africa’s most popular online fashion platforms, with over 5 million visits per month. More than 5,000 new items are listed every day, with 750,000 items currently on sale just in South Africa. Yaga has also partnered with some of South Africa’s largest fashion influ encers, as well as local retail giants like The Foschini Group and organisations such as Sneakershack that revives old sneakers.

Yaga’s popularity is not surprising: its social e-commerce platform is like a mix between Instagram and eBay, allowing users to browse and purchase products in a visual feed, or to create their own personal online stores for selling pre-loved items. Yaga also offers local payment and delivery methods, making shopping and selling online more accessible. Through its escrow system, Yaga further ensures money only changes hands when both parties confirm the deal went smoothly, addressing one of the main risks of buying from strangers online and providing peace of mind for buyers and sellers.

With the latest €2.2 million investment, Yaga aims to continue its rapid growth over the next year, further developing its platform, growing its team, and attracting new customers. Having recently also expanded to Kenya and India, the company is set to become the leading marketplace for second-hand fashion in Africa and Asia.

Create a beautiful outdoor entertainment space for summer

The much-anticipated summer holidays are fast approaching, and the hot days and warm nights will see many South Africans relaxing outdoors. What better way to prepare to spend quality time making memories with family and friends than by creating a beautiful outdoor area for some alfresco dining and entertaining?

For those thinking that money doesn’t allow for any renovations – especially with festive season expenses around the corner - the good news is that there are quick and easy things you can do on a budget to create an outdoor entertainment area from scratch, or update an existing neglected space into your favourite place to spend time in.

Orlando Luis, CEO of Brights Hardware, a leading independent hardware retailer, offers some tips:

Set the scene - “If you don’t have an outdoor entertainment space, choose an area close to the house or near the pool if you have one, and lay down some cement paving stones and/or stone chips. Another option is to create an area of wooden decking, and people are doing clever things with reclaimed pallet wood that is cheap and effective.”

Light it up - “Once you have the stage set for your new entertainment area, the next thing you want to do is provide some lighting. There are many solar options on the market that allow you to install instant lighting without needing to get in an electrician to do the wiring. Choose between solar lanterns, spotlights, downlight ers, motion sensor lights, floating solar pool lights, garden lights and so many more.”

Sitting pretty - “No entertainment area is complete without seating, and ideally a dining area for some alfresco meals. If you can, treat yourself to some new outdoor furniture to finish off your new space.”

“There are so many products available for the upcycling enthusiast, and you can customise the furniture to suite any colour scheme or style.”

Blooming good ideas - Having some strategically placed pots planted up with a variety of herbs, flowers, rose bushes, ornamental trees, or suitable bushes (whatever you personally prefer) will add a beautiful element to your newly created entertainment area.

Get things cooking - Last, but certainly not least, Luis adds that if you are able to, invest in a portable braai to go with your new entertainment area. “Outdoor entertaining in SA is not complete without a braai. The evocative smell of meat sizzling over the heat, family and friends gathered enjoying each other’s company and savouring a delicious meal – is one of our favourite pastimes.”

Brights hardware stores have on-site experts in all branches, ready to provide advice and guidance on any product, building and renovating trends.

| New Luxury Holiday accommodation in Hermanus at

Benguela Cove

| South Africa's Top holiday hotspots to visit this December

The holidays are around the corner and many South Africans are planning where they will stay, and play, this year for their annual getaway.

The Bergrivier region, and the beautiful towns situated within it - which are right on Cape Town’s doorstep - offers something for everyone this December, and is also close enough for day-trippers to enjoy. There is a vast array of activities and accommodation options, as well as some of the most pristine and untouched nature reserves, wetlands, lagoons, mountain landscapes and more.

The towns of Velddrif, Piketberg and Porterville in the Bergrivier district are perfect destinations to visit this holiday.

Oceanfront villas for vacation rentals are now available at Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate, the exclusive Western Cape resort near Hermanus. The luxury beachfront accommodation is located in the residential area of the Walker Bay wine estate, which was acquired and developed by the Streeter family in 2013.

The vineyard and eco-holiday destination has just earned the national ‘Cellar Door Experience of the Year’ title in wine writer Tim Atkin’s 10th annual South Africa Special Report.

“Villa guests can wake in the morning on a vineyard estate with views across the beautiful lagoon, which is shielded from the Atlantic Ocean by a sandbar that keeps the water warm and sharks away,” says Penny Streeter OBE.

“During the day, there’s a wide choice of watersports and adventure trails, fine cuisine, wine tastings, arts and music, all within the estate’s separate hospitality sector. Hermanus is nearby, with its renowned whale watching, restaurants, and entertainment - and Cape Town International Airport is only an hour away.

“Four villas are available for luxury stays - ideal for family holidays, staycations and wedding parties. The detached villas each have excellent Wi-Fi, a swimming pool, and every contemporary amenity, all within a secure private area on the estate.”

Each villa sleeps 6 to 10 guests, with en-suite bedrooms. The kitchens are fully equipped for self-catering, and there are interior fireplaces, an outside braai, a pool and a sundeck.

The estate’s lagoon beachfront, which is the second longest in South Africa, has exclusive boat access for guests and residents to enjoy a variety of waterborne sports - sailing and motorboating, paddle boarding, waterskiing, fishing, kitesurf ing, and other activities.

On-site facilities include boat storage and the use of a tractor and slipway for fast and easy launches. There is a private clubhouse near the jetties, available for an additional hire fee, with a kitchen and reception room and an adjacent private stretch of beach, where homeowners can book a braai after a day spent in or on the water - or play a few sets on the neighbouring tennis courts.

Guests can visit the separate winery area at Benguela Cove, which has a res taurant and wine-tasting lounge. Visitors can enjoy wine tastings on a pontoon boat cruise of the lagoon. This adds a new dimension to the enjoyment of this special stretch of water, says Penny Streeter. Cruises are free for two people when guests buy a case of wine from the estate’s award-winning vineyard. Villas are available for rental 12 months of the year, & also for purchase. Contact 066 210 0908, stay@benguelacove.co.za or www.benguelacove.co.za

The hugely popular West Coast village of Velddrif is one of the post popular bird-watching sites in South Africa, and the estuary is rated as one of the most important birding areas in the world. Velddrif offers a myriad of water-sports, including skiing, sailing, canoeing, windsurfing, kiteboarding, boating, stand-up paddling and more. Fishing enthusiasts will be rewarded as the river holds an abundance of fish species. The Fisheries Museum is well worth a visit to find out about the colourful history of the fishing industry along this coast. The area also offers 4x4’ing, hiking, mountain climbing, and a shooting range at nearby Klein Tafelberg.

A boat cruise up the river on the Cracklin Rosie, or with Knot Xtreme, is a must-do experience, and Bokkomlaan - the oldest road in the town that snakes up the edge of the Berg. Bokkomlaan is named after the salted mullet strung into bunches and hung to dry like biltong. It is the signature local delicacy in this area. Velddrif is a foodie’s paradise and some recommended experiences include wine and biltong tasting, Bokkom tasting, a craft beer tasting, gin tasting, and an artisanal cheese tasting.

Outdoor enthusiasts are also in for a treat with a visit to Porterville, which offers a variety of hiking trails to fascinating destinations like De Hel (the hell) and De Tronk (the jail). There is also an uphill waterfall trail dotted with 22 waterfalls snaking their way down the mountainside, interspersed with crystal clear pools for a cooling dip. Mountain-bikers will love the many trails that wind their way through the surrounding countryside.

Whether it is birdwatching, river cruising, canoeing, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, horse-riding, shopping, enjoying delicious food and great wine, gin-tasting, or just relaxing and re-energizing in nature – there is so much to do in the Ber grivier area that visitors are truly spoilt for choice, which is great news for people looking for something to do this December.

Grab Life by The Horns

Monique van Doorn from the Netherlands, a former kindergarten teacher by training, is currently visiting South Africa, captivating South Africans with her inspi rational story as well as her art, predominantly inspired by nature and travel.

Monique was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009. After successful cancer treatment, she decided that something had to change in her life. She and her husband sold their earthly belongings and became ‘modern nomads’ when their kids left home to study abroad. They wanted to travel and explore the world, meet new people, have many exciting new adventures and create new memories.

“I travel with as little luggage as possible, but I always have my hiking boots, camera, and a sketchbook and pencils with me. My passion is making drawings and paintings, inspired by travels, stories, and nature. Wherever I settle down, I create art,” says Monique.

Monique’s art is displayed all over the world from Amsterdam, Barcelona to the Caribbean, Florida and also South Africa. Her artwork is currently on display at South Hill Winery in Elgin and White Water Farm in Stanford.

Why do you love South Africa, and particularly Hermanus, so much?

“I visited Hermanus for the first time in 2013. This beautiful little town, in the stun ning Overberg and the deep blue ocean, captured our hearts. It is everything that we need – fresh air, friendly people, good food, fantastic wines, and white sandy beaches.”

Monique’s motto is to live life to its fullest and have fun. She believes that animals should be protected from extinction and support this by giving a percentage of her

Joy from Africa to the World returns talents

This year the call-to-action is built around the theme of nostalgia, reflecting a moment in time when the world is yearning for a return to happy, simpler times.

Through the initiative, the Waterfront will continue to shun traditional imported tinsel and baubles and plastics for its festive decorations, which so often end up in landfill sites, choosing instead to creatively repurpose and present fresh, original installations every year. Since 2019, artists and crafters have all accepted com missions to work with local, sustainable materials.

Since its inception, the collaboration with creatives has grown to create 155 jobs and now supports many small local design and craft businesses. The eight NPO beneficiaries the Waterfront works with includes the Cape Town Society for the Blind, and New Crossroads Can. The initiative has also supported 15 young graphic designers and artists and this year a total of 24 individuals, NPOs and SMMEs have participated in the creation of the theme. This year, activations will be in place from December, and will remain up until mid-January 2023.

Visually, Joy from Africa will be bold, bright and fun and will be showcasing Africa’s heritage of innovative textiles and pattern design, and this year’s display has bursts of bright colours indicative of a more hopeful future.

As the V&A Waterfront gears up for its traditional festive season, free of the restrictions of the past two years, it is once again partnering with local artists and crafters to present a visual spectacle of décor installations that will give visitors a warm African welcome.

Joy From Africa to The World, now in its fourth year, continues to grow as a source of inspiration and a call to action for visitors and tenants alike to act respon sibly and safeguard the environment.

No festive season is complete without a Christmas tree. This year the V&A’s giant tree is a collaboration with Lalela, an innovative arts education programme for at-risk youth, who commissioned their young students to draw self-portraits that will be placed all around it.

Kids can also, look forward to a fun and exciting experience at the Waterfront Wonderland, a fantasy journey through a rocket ship, a sleigh pulled by beaded reindeers, a pirate ship and Father Christmas’ own festive taxi.

Families can also step in and out of three two-metre-tall books, each reflecting the magic of storytelling and this year’s pillars of heritage, hope and inspiration.

With almost 40% of all enquiries from entrepreneurs to the City’s Business Hub seeking guidance on starting and developing their businesses, this academy is of great importance to Capetonians.

Small businesses are essential to innovation and jobs, and so support for budding entrepreneurs must be tangible and cognisant of their reality. As such, the courses on the learning portal will be designed for mobile devices, and, making them ideal for individuals with few resources at their disposal.

The academy is a further example of the power of partnership as The Start-up Tribe, a global initiative that is aiming to help people around the world to start and grow their own businesses, will administer the platform.

Maintaining your air conditioner regularly is like maintaining your car or bike. If the Air conditioner (AC) is not serviced regularly, dust and dirt will get accumulated in the fans, filters, coils and other parts of the unit. When you turn on the AC, the debris will slowly damage the internal components and decrease the overall efficiency of the Air conditioning unit.

When to service your air conditioner? Air Filter Solutions (AFS) recommend a comprehensive service at least once every 12 months. The best time of the year to service your air conditioner is just before the change of season.

If you have a cooling-only unit, spring is the perfect time to service the unit, so it is all set for the summers. If you have a reverse-cycle air conditioner, service it twice, in spring and in autumn, so both the heating and cooling functions work as expected.

Why should you get your aircon serviced? To improve the efficiency and lifespan of your AC; save money on your electricity bills; improve the indoor air quality and prevent respiratory issues and skin allergies; ensure small issues are detected early and do not become big ones; and AC Cleaning inhibits the growth of microbes, mould, mildew and other contaminants and improves the air quality.

At Air Filter Solutions, we strive to be the most reliable expert, in servicing, faultfinding, and installation of all air conditioning brands.

Discuss your air conditioning and ventilation queries with expert professionals to ensure it runs smoothly throughout the year.

Cape Town’s start-up scene is currently worth R48,25 billion, and more and more entrepreneurs are moving from elsewhere in the country and setting up shop here because of the strong support systems the City has put in place.

“Through projects and programmes such as the Cape Town Entrepreneurship Academy, it is my mission to do even more, and help more Capetonians realise their business dreams while creating more job opportunities,” said Alderman James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth.

a future in the med!

“Ninety percent of all millionaires become so through owning real estate.”……. Andrew Carnegie

Cyprus is quickly becoming one of Europe’s most sought-after and desirable destinations to ex-pats both for permanent residency, relocation as well as property investment. Being English-speaking is a huge advantage as there is no language barrier. Being regarded as one of the safest countries in the world; year on year Cyprus enjoys an increase in property sales to overseas buyers especially in the Western part of the island. Huge investment is pouring into the economy with all the infrastructural developments and the enormous natural gas fields. There’s never been a better time to explore investing in Cyprus!

Here are the 7 reasons why South Africans are buying property in Cyprus:

1. Owning a property in Cyprus – the 3rd largest island in The Med - means you really are living the Mediterranean dream.

2. The Fast Track permanent residency programme on offer in Cyprus has been voted as THE BEST in Europe because it takes just 2 – 3 months for 3 generations in the same family line to get permanent residency for life. You are also entitled to free medical on Cyprus’ National Health plan; and you don’t need to live in the country for your residency to remain valid.

3. Properties in Cyprus offer excellent value for money when compared to other European countries – especially homes right on or near to The Med. The property ownership costs like levies and utilities etc. are a fraction of the cost of other countries.

4. Cyprus’ positive property growth offers a very attractive investment for the short, medium and long term. Due to the lifestyle appeal and more people wanting to relocate to Cyprus, there is huge demand for properties suitable for long term tenants. Owners enjoy a great return on their investment.

5. Cyprus is a very popular tourist destination so owning an investment prop-

erty will reap an attractive offshore income as the short term holiday let market is buoyant and growing. As electricity costs rise, hotels are becoming more expensive to run - so the self-catering accommodation market is becoming more popular with tourists who are coming to Cyprus for their holidays.

6. Cyprus has been voted one of the safest countries in the world so your personal safety and property investment is assured.

7. The discovery and imminent exploration of natural gas is already having a positive impact on foreign investment and infrastructural development. Billions of Euros are already pouring into the economy.

Protect yourself, your family and your assets from unpredicted events by taking advantage of the opportunity to secure permanent residency in Cyprus. Think of getting residency as guaranteeing your and your family’s future. An astute offshore property investment that works for you in the short, medium and long term is the achievement of a lifetime. Investing in Cyprus’ residency programme not only makes financial sense, but it will tangibly benefit your immediate family Can you afford not to take advantage of this while the programme is still open?

A new home in a new country is the achievement of a lifetime and an investment in the future for the next generation. In Cyprus the investment options really are the best. Living is laid back and you set your own pace. And what better place to do this than where the blue skies meet the Mediterranean Sea: on the beautiful island of Cyprus.

History of the South African Lipizzaners

Many people have heard of the world-famous Spanish Riding School in Vienna, but it is here in sunny South Africa, that the qualities of grace, dignity and nobility are upheld by a team of riders in the picturesque wine lands of the Western Cape. The survival of the Lipizzaner horse has often been threatened by war. Countless times have their fate been determined by the actions of those dedicated to their preservation. The story of how these iconic, European horses of history, battle and art ended up all the way in South Africa is a story fraught with bravery and daring escape. Their journey began in Hungary, on the familial Lipizzaner breeding farm of Count Jankovic-Besan, during the second World War he made a life-changing decision. He could not and would not allow his beloved Lipizzaner horses to fall into enemy hands. He strapped them to carts and to carriages, and set out one night in the deadening cold of a winter snowfall, covering a distance of hundreds of kilometres. In war-torn Europe, starving families were turning to any source to keep their children fed.

To prevent them from being eaten, he painted the gleaming white coats of his Lipizzaners with oil and paraffin so that they appeared dreadful and inedible. The disguise worked, and eventually their sorrowful party arrived in Bavaria, Germany with renewed hope. From Bavaria, they were able to arrange safe passage for his family and his herd to Dorset in England where they stayed for two years before securing a place aboard a ship headed for the shores of South Africa.

Seventy-four years later, the legacy and the incredible stories of Count Jankovic-Besan live on in the South African Lipizzaners. We live on as an NPO, and even though times are often hard, it is impossible for us not to keep writing the next chapter. Our 75th anniversary promises to be an epic celebration, with the Lipizzaners now based in the Western Cape we plan for these celebrations to be as historic as these incredible horses. Join us throughout the month of December for some holiday fun, as the Lipizzaners dance to your favourite jingles for some Christmas fun!

Raise your glass & join

the SA Wine Harvest celebrations

February 2023 marks the 364th anniversary of the South African wine industry, as recorded in Jan van Riebeeck’s diary on 2 February 1659: “Today, praise be to God, wine was made for the first time from Cape grapes.”

South Africa invites all with a passion for wine – from producers to social sippers – to raise their glasses to South Africa’s rich wine heritage.

On 2 February the Groot Constantia Wine Estate hosts this annual event, where the wine industry recognises its trailblazers. Over the years, many greats have been honoured, such as Nelson Mandela, the Unsung Wine Workers, and, in 2022, Carmen Stevens, Denise Stubbs, Francois Viljoen and Christine Rudman were added to this group of outstanding leaders.

Some of South Africa’s top photographers are coming to Barrydale for the 3rd annual Analog Photography Festival. From 9 - 19 December the Klein Karoo village will celebrate pictures shot on film and processed in the dark, an alchemy combining light physics, chemistry and creative artistry.

Local photography icon Obie Oberholzer is bringing a major hand-printed exhibi tion, along with award-winning photojournalist Guy Tillim, master printer Dennis da Silva and maverick artist Beezy Bailey.

The festival based in the Karoolkie cellar features exhibitions, workshops and talks, books, cameras and photographs for sale, old movie screenings, a mobile darkroom and a camera obscura in a vintage caravan for visitors to immerse themselves in the analog experience.

The festival was created by visionary photographer Graham Abbott, an analog entrepreneur with a passion for non-digital cameras and vintage analog technol ogy including turntables, VHS machines, typewriters and movie projectors.

“Despite everything going digital, there is a powerful awakening among all gen erations of the craft of a hand-printed picture made with patience and skill,” says Abbott. “The Barrydale Analog Photography Festival is bringing old and new work under one roof for public appreciation and to inspire a new era of analog photog raphers.”

Among other exhibition highlights this year are photographs from the Drum magazine archive, including Ranjith Kally, Bob Gosani and GR Naidoo; as well as photographers Graham Abbot, Tim Hopwood and Stellenbosch Academy stu dents. Tiaan van Deventer is exhibiting work shot in 2022 on a giant camera obscura at Afrika Burn in the Tankwa Karoo.
