Winning Ways For Woolworths Wines Woolworths offers a selection of cellar favourites of consistent quality and wide variety, with many of the wines exclusive to their stores. The selection process is carefully considered, and those efforts were recently rewarded with 70 awards from three prestigious competitions. Some 18 awards, including two trophies, were presented at the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show; 21 accolades, including one trophy, were received at the Michelangelo International Wine Awards, and 31 awards the Veritas Awards. The two trophies awarded at the Old Mutual show were for Spier’s The Hutton Cabernet Sauvignon 2012, and Windy Peak Sauvignon Blanc 2014 (both Woolworths selection). At the Michelangelo Awards, the only international wine competition in South Africa, the TM Mercury French Style Red Blend trophy went to the Woolworths Diemersdal Reserve Collection Merlot Malbec 2014. Some of the highest-ranked Woolworths wines at the recent Veritas awards included a double gold for Spier’s The Hutton Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 (Woolworths) and gold for the Spier Private Collection Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 (Woolworths). Gold awards also went to the Spier Longmarket Sauvignon Blanc/Sémillon 2015 (Woolworths) and the Simonsig Chenin Blanc Reserve Collection 2014 (Woolworths). “An increasing number of wines stocked by Woolworths are coming up trumps in benchmark competitions,” said Allan Mullins, who has been selecting and blending wine for Woolworths for 25 years. “Out of the 50 wines that were entered into the recent Veritas competition, 31 of them won awards. Many of the wines are co-branded and exclusive to us, so we see it as a great achievement,” he adds. “We are confident that our collaborators will be making even more trips to the winner’s podium this year, with the introduction of some fantastic new vintages to our shelves.” Allan further elaborated that Woolworths wines offer quality, excellent value for money and the opportunity to make unexpected discoveries. “From iconic single vineyard reds to easy-drinking blends, we have wines to match all tastes.”

Burger King® SA Localises Meat Manufacturing In April 2014, BURGER KING® South Africa celebrated the opening of its meat manufacturing plant, centrally situated in Cape Town. The state-of-the-art facility was conceptualised to produce patties locally thereby minimising import costs and aiding local expansion. The plant, a first of its kind in Africa has been supplying all 51 restaurants locally since then. According to Jaye Sinclair, CEO of BURGER KING® SA this plant is critical to support national supply chain by providing premium products to South Africans, by South Africans. “Growth and investment into local business is important to BURGER KING® SA’s expansion plans. We believe that quality is the key to longevity in the QSR market and producing locally ensures a higher quality product, because of the control over the production process.” The manufacturing plant creates 60-70 tonnes of meat products per month, which translates to about 700 000 patties monthly. 100% pure beef, manufactured according to the stringent requirements of BURGER KING® Worldwide, each patty is quality checked to ensure the highest standards are adhered to. Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Rob Davies says that this venture is an example of how a manufacturing enterprise can relate to the expansion of service activities. “Service sectors are more solidly routed and have much higher growth potential if they are related to the manufacturing company providing their goods. Agro-processing plays a significant role in the South African economy in terms of job creation and sustainability.” Currently, the hamburger chain sources 99% of its products locally.
