The Newspaper – October Edition 2022

Page 1

Although tourism is the major attraction of the Western Cape, the annual summer calendar is filled with some iconic events.

The Western Cape’s peak events period gets into full swing from October until April, with a range of events taking place across the province.

Cape Town and the Western Cape becomes the meeting spot for events such as wine and food festivals, expos and many shows – one being the Lipizzaner horses and riders showcasing choreographed music routines. Cultural events will include the Malay choir road marches and the historic 2de Nuwe Jaar Minstrel Parade.

For sports fans the calendar will include the Sanlam Cape Marathon in October, the World Rugby Seven Series in December, while cyclists will line up for the Cape Town Cycle Tour, the biggest road cycling event, as well as the Cape Epic, the largest mountain bike stage race in the world, during March 2023.

The economic spin-offs from events in the Western Cape generate a ripple effect of job creation during and after events, and increase the spend at our world-famous attractions. It also enriches knowledge in hosting and creates opportunities for some of the people working on the events to initiate, and grow, their own businesses.

WORLD-CLASS EVENTS TO BE HOSTED THIS SUMMER

der Merwe

Reinvention comes easily to Suzette van der Merwe, Miss South Africa 1990, who morphed from pageant titleholder to senior executive in charge of corporate Social Investment at a major telecom company with ease.

Now, the 50-something-year-old Suzette is making another big change in her life – one that takes her back to her first love: creating beautiful interior spaces. Suzette has thrown her talent and skills behind Pencil & Oak and joined the Paarl, Western Cape-based high-end furniture and décor company as its brand manager.

Suzette began her new journey in 2019, the year she turned 50 and had a health scare. “I asked myself the question: If I have 20 summers left, how, with who and where am I going to spend them?” Her plan – to retire from corporate and take a year-long sabbatical while considering her options – was derailed by the pandemic.

Live life with love & passion

Earlier this year Suzette moved her family to the Cape Winelands where they are about to build their dream home. “It was a conscious decision to live a more balanced, authentic and healthy life. It’s only when I slowed down and had an honest conversation with myself that I was reminded of my first love and passion.”

In her own words: “I have had a remarkable career and enjoyed every moment of it. But the magic of life is that we have different seasons. I look forward to the next chapter.”

She said: “Since I can remember I’ve always loved making beautiful spaces. As a young girl, I used to move my bedroom furniture around every week…and still do! It’s like I’ve come full circle, finally able to turn to the creative side of my talent.”

Pencil & Oak specialises in craftsmanship where customised furniture and high-quality products are made from the finest ethically sourced materials. Co-owner and founder, Stephan Smith, said of Suzette: “She epitomises what our brand stands for: A world-class, respected, quality person with timeless style and longevity. We look forward to her helping us grow our brand, as she comes with a wealth of corporate experience and creativity. We are proud to have her join our team.”

One of the most beautiful, diverse and awe-inspiring regions in the country, the Garden Route and Klein Karoo is also one of the most-loved road trips to embark on. Stretching from Witsand to Plettenberg Bay, right around to Oudtshoorn as well as Calitzdorp and Ladismith on the world-renowned Route 62, this is a place where adventure lies around every corner. Explore the Knysna Heads, play on world class golf courses and eat at award-winning restaurants in one of the country’s most beautiful regions. If a long road trip isn’t quite what you have in mind, many domestic airlines fly to George Airport. George is located in the heart of the Garden Route and a great place to start your adventure.

Discover the Point of Human Origins at the Pinnacle Point Caves. Spot the endangered Cape Mountain Zebra and Black Harrier as they roam freely with Big Five game. Situated just 25kms outside Mossel Bay, Gondwana offers an authentic African game experience.

The Garden Route and Klein Karoo is home to breathtaking natural sights, be it dramatic oceanside cliffs, ancient forests or semi arid deserts. Take advantage to see as much as possible by visiting a few of the many nature reserves in the region: Garden Route National Park, Karoo National Park, Robberg Nature Reserve, Outeniqua Nature Reserve, Swartberg Nature Reserve and Gamkaberg.

Places to visit in the Garden Route: Cango Caves, Oudtshoorn; Birds of Eden, Plett; The Pottery, George; Red Berry Farm, George; Acrobranch, Wilderness; Salt & Copper, Hartenbos; Western Cape Butterfly Sanctuary, Mossel Bay; Pirate Ship, Knysna; Robberg Nature Reserve, Plett, and Kayaking the Estuary, Knysna.

Benguela Cove - Top Cellar Door Experience Award

Benguela Cove Wine Estate was commended in UK wine writer, Tim Atkin’s 10th annual South Africa Special Report. The Walker Bay wine farm won the best ‘Cellar Door Experience of the Year’ award and Medals of Excellence for all of its ten wine entries, with each wine achieving 90 or more points out of 100 for the second consecutive year.

Benguela Cove’s top achievers in the report included its Vinography SemillonSauvignon Blanc 2021, awarded 94 points - just one point short at 93 were its Sauvignon Blanc 2021, Sauvignon Blanc Noble Late Harvest 2020, and Vinogra phy Chardonnay 2021.

Benguela Cove scored further success in the Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards. The estate achieved a platinum medal for Vinography Chardon nay 2021; two gold medals, for its Vinography Petit Verdot 2020 and Lighthouse Collection Syrah 2020; and a silver for Lighthouse Collection Moody Lagoon 2020. The Michelangelo event is Africa’s largest wine and spirits competition, with judges selected from five different continents.

The Benguela Collection wine and hospitality group is owned by the Streeter family. It was founded by Penny Streeter OBE in 2013.

The cellar door experience at the estate includes the Moody Lagoon restaurant, recommended in the Atkin’s report, and a popular wine-tasting pontoon tour with impressive views across the serene waters of the lagoon, which is protected by a sandbar from the Atlantic Ocean. There are also cheese and chocolate pairings, winemaking experiences, and a programme of major art exhibitions, music and other year-round events, as well as children’s entertainment.

Future events in this year’s summer programme include an exceptional sixcourse gourmet Christmas Eve Dinner at Moody Lagoon Restaurant, say the owners, 6pm - 9pm, 24 December. Guests can also book a table for Christmas Lunch, served from 12pm - 3pm on 25 December.

Other events include the Pirate-themed Night Golf at Benguela Adventure, 6pm to 8pm from 1st December 2022. Hospitality includes ‘boerie rolls and bubbly’, craft beer on tap and picture-perfect views.

On Saturday, 10th December, visitors can see the Rooisand Wild Horses Exhi bition and Conservation Talk. Guests can hear photographer and conservationist Leanne Dryburgh talk about the wild horses that still roam the striking landscape.

Experience the Dancing White Stallions

The South African Lipizzaner Centre is a Non-Profit Organisation located at the Mistico Equestrian Centre, outside Paarl in the Western Cape. Their work is dedi cated to the preservation of the magnificent Lipizzaner horse in South Africa and the continuation of classical dressage.

The Lipizzaner horses and their riders publicly perform carefully choreographed routines set to music, as well as showcasing airs above the ground movements. Watching them perform these movements is to experience history in motion. The Lipizzaner is one of the oldest domesticated breeds of horse still existing in the world today. They were purpose-bred for battle, making them the iconic war-horse of the Middle Ages. Lipizzaners are almost always exclusively white as adults, despite being born black or dark brown. On the stud farm, the dark foals stand in stark contrast to the silvery-white sheen of their mothers.

The Lipizzaner horse in South Africa also plays an important part in the educa tion of young South Africans. “Through our FirstRand development the program, we ensure not only the future of the Lipizzaner, but also young South Africans.”

Bring everyone along to experience the ballet of the Dancing White Stallions, one of three places in the world you can still see these horses perform. Watch them perform jaw-dropping movements used in ancient battles and dance to tunes you can’t help but sing along to. An interactive, educational and musical experience for the young and young at heart! The perfect outing for the whole family!

| City’s fi rst solar plant in Atlantis to be built next year

| Nampo Cape flowers in the Overberg

The 3rd hosting of NAMPO Cape from 14-17 September 2022, and the biggest yet, concluded Grain SA together with Bredasdorp Park NPC are grateful for the record 32,640 guests who visited NAMPO Cape over the four days to visits the more than 500 exhibitors.

“The positive feedback from the exhibitors in terms of business transactions still remain one of the most important and accurate measures of success, and the exhibitors have certainly benefited from this highlight on the Cape agricultural calendar,” said Toit Wessels, Grain SA’s Assistant Manager of NAMPO.

The City of Cape Town plans to build its first grid-connected solar plant next year as one of its interventions to end load-shedding over time.

The City has issued the tender for engineering, procurement and construction of its planned 7MW Atlantis solar photovoltaic (PV). The facility will be connected directly into the City’s electrical network. It is foreseen that the future could hold the construction of similar plants across the metro.

This is one of a range of interventions to end load-shedding over time. The power plant would start generating electricity in 2024 and be in operation for 20 years, with a foreseen annual output of 14,7GWh.

“The City currently purchases most of its electricity from Eskom. High Eskom price escalations expected in future may not be financially sustainable for the City and its residents. It is expected that the Atlantis solar plant will enhance the City’s financial sustainability, as the cost of generating the electricity would be lower than the bulk procurement from Eskom. Reducing the dependency on Eskom also means the City can develop and explore more climate-friendly power sources than Eskom’s coal-fired power stations.”

“This is another decisive step that the City is taking toward a more secure, cheaper and cleaner energy future for the people of Cape Town. Apart from the City’s own build generation, strides have also been made to enabling independent power production and small-scale embedded generation,” said Cape Town Mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis.

One of the goals of this programme is to achieve the City’s net-zero carbon municipal buildings’ commitment by 2030, and this power plant would be expected to contribute towards this. There would be a significant reduction in the City’s carbon footprint if it switched from Eskom to solar-generated electricity

The many new additions during the week, and especially the Elim wildflower exhibition, the Merino Classic and the large number of farmer innovation entries were all hits. Visitors to NAMPO Cape were amazed by the impressive Nedbank flower arrangement exhibition led by Marjolijn Malan. For NAMPO Cape 2022, Marjolijn built a giant deconstructed protea and a fantasy bird made of ostrich and blue crane feathers and hundreds of Septuagint’s, including the rare Strawberry Septuagint.

The Overberg Youth Show was another highlight during Saturday’s program. As one of eight regional competitions in the Western Cape in which learners can participate to qualify for the Western Cape Youth Show Championships taking place during March 2023, an incredible 176 entries were received in 14 classes. The Merino Classic 2022 fulfilled its promise and housed the best merinos in South Africa under one roof for the show.

Grain SA had positive and valuable discussions with Western Cape Premier Alan Winde, as well as the Western Cape Minister of Agriculture, Dr Ivan Meyer. “The value for producers to view and easily compare new technology on one platform cannot be underestimated. New ideas for adaptations and new designs can be found every-where, with a multitude of networking opportunities with existing and new members and agricultural role players’ management teams”, concluded Taljaard.

The popular Nation in Conversation platform addressed several relevant topics including Infrastructure: opportunities amid the obstacles; Rural revival: new energy; Economic bumper car: driver or passenger; Winter grains: a boost for barley; Rural Safety: YOU are the difference, in collaboration with Agri Western Cape; and Youth: technology and strategies for the future.

| The world is on the move

As South Africa’s peak season travel season is approaching, there is convincing evidence that reveals global travel to be on the rise, once again.

The recent surge in travel activity has taken the industry by surprise, exceeding the conservative recovery projections. According to leading visa outsourcing and technology services specialist VFS Global, the number of visa applications between January and August 2022 alone was almost four times larger than the total number of applications for the whole of last year.

Jiten Vyas, Chief Commercial Officer, at VFS Global, says, “This increase is primarily driven by a high pent-up travel demand. With the opening of international borders, easing of travel restrictions, and the resumption of regular international flights, the industry is witnessing peak ‘revenge’ travel.”

Canada and Australia were the top locations for outbound travel from South Africa in terms of visa application volumes, while growth was also seen in outbound travel to Schengen locations, particularly in Italy and the Netherlands. According to Vyas, the resumption of in-campus classes at overseas universities was also a major contributing factor to the spike in outbound traffic.

Vyas further emphasises that health considerations and prioritising safe travel have become key priorities. Shifting customer expectations have fuelled the emergence and acceptance of contactless and Do it Yourself (DIY) technologies. “We have noticed wider acceptance of digital services that enhance customer convenience by minimising physical contact. In line with this philosophy, we introduced services such as Digital Document Check (DDC) which enables customers to verify documents before visiting a visa application centre, thereby streamlining and shortening the in-person experience.”

Similarly, VFS Global’s Visa at Your Doorstep (VAYD) service provides customers an end-to-end visa submission facility at a location of their choice.

Air Belgium touches down in the Mother City

On 19 September 2022 Air Belgium’s inaugural flight from Brussels touched down at the Cape Town International Airport, marking the beginning of the airline’s seasonal flights to South Africa.

Welcomed by a cheery crowd comprising of Wesgro’s Cape Town Air Access team, representatives from the Western Cape government and the City of Cape Town, representatives from ACSA and Air Belgium and many others - the leisureoriented Belgian airline will operate two tag flights to Cape Town via Johannesburg from Brussels per week (BRU-JHB-CPT-JHB-BRU).

Franschhoek launches new foodie event

The Franschhoek Wine Valley, now known as the Valley of Dreams, continues to deliver on its namesake as the culinary capital of South Africa.

Set for Friday, 28 October 2022, a new showcase of chef brilliance and ode to all thing’s local hits centre stage for this historic town, in the first annual ‘Culinary Collective’ event, hosted at Leopard’s Leap Family Vineyards.

The event line-up focuses on all things local, with the spotlight firmly on winemakers and produce grown right from the abundant Franschhoek Wine Valley. Patrons, oenophiles and lovers of fine food are invited to attend this exclusive, relaxed lunch - offering the chance to meet some of SA’s biggest chef names and join in the conversation around the origins of good food with the local farmers and suppliers.

The new route will be operated by the Airbus A330neo with a 286 seats capacity in a three-class layout (30 comfortable lie-flat business class, 21 premium-class, and 235 economy-class seats) and consumes on average 25% less fuel compared to previous generation aircraft, making the flight more cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

With the Johannesburg and Cape Town routes currently being the airline’s only continental Africa flights, Brussels has historically been Cape Town’s secondlargest unserved market and the largest unserved European market based on two-way international passenger volumes. The additional capacity is expected to offer remarkable potential for growth in business and leisure travel between these destinations for international visitors and locals alike.

With Reuben Riffel, David Schneider, Darren Badenhorst, Richard Carstens and Chris Erasmus proudly at the forefront of this year’s line-up, organisers of the event see the ‘Culinary Collective’ growing from strength to strength in the future as they use this platform to showcase other top local and international chefs.

Guests will enjoy five courses, each presented by one of the celebrity chefs and in discussion with a choice local artisan or supplier. Furthermore, local wine estates are presented course by course - perfectly paired with bread course, starters, mains and something sweet.

The Brasserie - re-introducing their culinary stage

The Lagoon Beach Hotel takes great pleasure in re-introducing their culinary stage – The Brasserie and its masterful artist, Executive Chef Peter Anderson.

“The Brasserie restaurant at the Lagoon Beach Hotel offers more than just the best view in Cape Town. We use locally sourced ingredients and draw inspiration from the Atlantic Ocean on our doorstep and the Western Cape in our backyard to bring you a combination of modern South African dishes and traditional favorites.

From the potjies and braais of childhood memories to the sweet desserts of family parties, food in South Africa has always brought people together. South African cuisine with its unique fusion of culinary and cultural influences from around the world - Dutch, French and Malaysian flavors and cooking styles of tastes and flavors make up the modern South African dining experience.

At the brasserie we continue the heritage of bringing people together with our new seasonal menu. You can choose from flame grilled steak and line-fish or pick one of our signature dishes with their subtle twist on tradition. Our Malay prawn risotto, which is rooted more in the Bo-Kaap than Lombardy, or the handpicked mussels from Langebaan that we use in the black mussel potjie with roasted wild garlic. Food isn’t a destination; it’s a journey and we look forward to meeting you on yours,” says Anderson.

“We’re excited to re-launch The Brasserie with a new menu to please the varied palates of our rainbow of guests and we’re happy to welcome back local diners from the west coast of Cape Town and to offer a truly South African dining experience also to our resident guests at the Hotel from across the globe,” says Pieter Buitendag, General Manager of the Lagoon Beach Hotel.

The Cradle of Human Culture

Discover where we came from: Discover the origins of human culture

A journey through the Cradle of Human Culture traces the origins and development of human culture over the past 160 000 years, and, in the process, it also uncovers what it means to be human.

In South Africa, we have two “Cradles”. The Cradle of Humankind, which was nominated a World Heritage Site in 1999, and another site, the Cradle of Human Culture in the Western Cape, which is taking the theme of human development even further into the realm of human culture.

The Cradle of Human Culture is rooted in three main archaeological sites in the Western Cape. These sites preserve some of the world’s earliest evidence of the evolution of modern human behaviour.

From engraved ostrich eggshells and bone tools to shell beads and the first evidence of drawing, visitors will discover some of humanity’s earliest use of symbols, art and technological innovation. While the Cradle of Humankind in Gauteng holds some of the earliest evidence of the human journey, starting from about 3.5 million years ago, the Cradle of Human Culture holds evidence of how our ancestors started to manifest abstract thought, to use fire to improve their tool-making skills and to systematically exploit marine resources for

their nutrition. These sites reveal how we, as Homo sapiens, started to innovate socially, behaviourally and culturally. By following our early predecessors’ footsteps, visitors will discover how we became what we are today.

The Cradle of Human Culture includes several archaeological and palaeontological sites in the Western Cape. The three major ones are Diepkloof Rock Shelter on the Cape West Coast (Weskus), Blombos Cave and Pinnacle Point on the Southern Cape Coast. However, a trip to the Cradle of Human Culture includes more than these three sites, and the development and expression of human culture can be traced across all sites.

Experience the two journeys through the Western Cape, forming part of the Cradle of Human Culture. Along the Artist’s Journey in the Cape West Coast (Weskus), you will discover the West Coast Fossil Park, San Rock art dotted along the Cederberg and unique guided experiences that will leave you feeling inspired. Along the Coastal Journey, you will catch a glimpse of the Cape Winelands, delving into the Cape Overberg and exploring the famous Garden Route & Klein Karoo discovering coastal caves and the underground cave wonder known as the Cango Caves.

A Culinary Career | for those with Plant Powered Principles

The plant-based foods sector will continue to see huge growth over the next decade as consumer habits transform, but what will be the effect on cooking schools? Can students attend culinary school while still sticking to their vegan and vegetarian principles?

“I believe culinary schools are starting to realise that a plant-based culinary education is becoming more than a point under special diets in a curriculum. We are all responsible for equipping learners with relevant and applicable skills to become employable and capable of successful entrepreneurship,” says Candice Adams, Manager of Operations Academic at Capsicum Culinary Studio.

“I believe that the plant-based diet phenomenon will continue to grow and evolve. More people are implementing a flexitarian, vegetarian or vegan diet for various reasons, ranging from health, ecological, sustainability, religious, cultural and ethical reasons. Our students are learning about plant-based cooking and how to adapt their cooking techniques to produce high quality plant-centred creations,” says Adams.

“Vegan and vegetarian learners still need to work with and cook meat products as it’s important to understand how to use meat, dairy, egg and other animal-based products in a professional kitchen. If you are already a professional chef and want to brush up on plant-based cooking skills, learners can do the Plant-Forward Kitchen Programme, an ondemand, self-paced short course that is available via our online store,” Adams concludes.

SA’s Best Wines “Belong Among The World’s Elite”

Tim Atkin MW, who releases his tenth South Africa Report with Chenin Blanc and Stellenbosch wines showing particularly well, contends the 2021 vintage could rank as one of the Cape’s best-ever vintages to date. This year, there are 10 wines that score 98 each.

“Overall, I am extremely impressed with the quality of what I tasted in 2022, especially from the 2017 and 2021 vintages. I am more convinced than ever that 2017 deserves its place among the best-ever Cape harvests, as good as and, in some cases, even better than 2015. But I have a feeling that 2021 could equal and possibly surpass it.”

He is “amazed by the remarkable progress” the country has made since his first report issued in 2013 and is urging producers “to take great pride in Brand South Africa”. This is as 8,5% of the record 2 282 wines tasted from 433 wineries garner scores of 95 or higher. For several producers to feature on this list of 195 wines, it is a first-time achievement.

“South Africans are a resilient bunch, but I was amazed by how the wine sector has bounced back after so many pandemicinduced setbacks. Producers are still pushing viticultural boundaries in places like Sutherland, Stanford, as well as the Koo Plateau and the Agulhas Triangle and, at the top end, growing grapes that express their terroir with increasing fidelity and precision across the Western Cape. There is also a very interesting dynamic at play. Greater numbers of younger-generation winemakers are excelling, and prompting some of the more established producers to innovate more.”

Also encouraging is the strong commitment to addressing climate change with new approaches to rootstocks, trellising systems, cover crops and ploughing techniques to see what works best in drier conditions, while giving greater focus to drought-resistant varieties, from Assyrtiko to Vermentino.

Stellenbosch can reaffirm its pre-eminent regional position, as the source of a third of all the top-scoring wines, he confirms, followed at some distance by the Swartland.

YOU’RE INVITED

ON AN INSPECTION TRIP

“90% of all millionaires become so through owning real estate.” – Andrew Carnegie

There is a perception that it is very expensive and onerous to buy property in Europe to realize a Plan B. In Cyprus – an English-speaking, ex-British colony and full member of the EU – this perception couldn’t be more further from the truth.

Cyprus is an appealing investment, relocation and holiday destination and year on year has seen an increase in property sales to overseas buyers especially in the Western part of the island. Huge investment is pouring into the economy which has resulted in phenomenal growth and long-term stability.

Cyprus’ positive property growth and demand for long and short-term tenants offers a very attractive investment for the short, medium and long term. Real estate is one of Cyprus’ most preferable investment options and there has never been a better time to buy a property in Cyprus!

Jacita Tackle & Outdoor

Once A Vision & Dream

It is a mere five years down the line and Jacita Tackle & Outdoor has grown from strength to strength. Jacques Britz and Jack Meyer didn’t allow the grass to grow under their feet, and took this venture on with both hands, feet and drums of sweat and gears. Those who walked the road with them, will remember the modest beginning and looking at the New and very impressive Super Store that opened on 1 September 2022 in Durbanvllle, can only be impressed and aspired!

For Jacques this was a natural progression in his vision and dream and responds humbly with a big THANK YOU to their customers for the loyal support they have shown over the last five years.

It will be Jacita’s five-year birthday going into October this year together with the launch of their new online store as well, at www.Jacita.co.za and promises to be as impressive.

When Jacques was asked what his secret is, he replied that it is all about the people, his customers, and that will never change.

Well, 2022 has certainly proved to be an eventful and very exciting year for Jacita Tackle & Outdoor and well worth the visit!

Jan Krielskool’s “Proudly Me” Message To Learners

Jan Kriel School is a special school that accommodates learners with barriers to learning from Grade R to Grade 12. The school’s vision is, “We develop potential: Where learners with barriers to learning are empowered for the future.”

Lister Maramba, a Grade 6 learner, is one of the learners who had a confidence boost at the school in line with the school’s theme for 2022 to make a difference – day by day, step by step.

Lister is hearing impaired with a coch lear implant. She was seen at Carel du Toit Centre from before her second birth day. There she met Mariette Nosworthy, an Early Interventionist, who was one of the team members involved with her until Grade 3. Lister was transferred to Jan Krielskool at the beginning of her Grade 4-year.

While participating in the Eisteddfod when she was younger, Lister wore a beany which she did not want to take off and which she pulled over her ears to cover her cochlear implants.

Nosworthy accompanied her to the Eisteddfod and after observing Lister’s dis comfort with her hearing aids being visible, she wrote the poem “Proudly Me” as a gift to Lister to illustrate to her that she can be proud of herself and her abilities. Reciting the poem has given Lister so much confidence, and seeing her embrace her impairment has been heart-warming.

Visit the WCED’s YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCn 4ZxXlyQ5Fxaccgcrjn-zQ) to watch Lister’s recitation of the poem “Proudly Me”.

Entries open for 2023 Cape Town Cycle Tour

On the 12th of March 2023, the Cape Town Cycle Tour celebrates its 45th event. On this incredible day of cycling celebration, we will mark the occasion with thou sands of cyclists from around South Africa and the world. Next year’s 109 km Cycle Tour will be the biggest party imaginable on two-wheels (and on one wheel, for that crazy individual who always rides his unicycle).

The Cycle Tour is a 109 km ride around Cape Town, starting in the city centre before taking cyclists through the suburbs, along the coast, past the puzzled pen guins of Simon’s Town, through Noordhoek and up the world-famous Chapman’s Peak Drive before finishing in Green Point. It’s truly the best way to enjoy the sights of the Mother City.

Participants in the 2023 Cape Town Cycle Tour can expect the same iconic route as always, but with an added festival atmosphere as the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust, the organisers of the Cycle Tour, go out of their way to commemorate this milestone.

The 2023 Cycle Tour will aim to be one enormous celebration of all aspects that make the event so popular - from the route to the city, to the supporters, the refreshment stands, to the “experienced” cyclists who wander around the Cape Town Cycle Tour Expo in their Lycra and helmets, to the riders themselves.

“Who could have imagined that a simple awareness ride could turn into one of the biggest cycling events in the world,” says David Bellairs of the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust.

People with a passion making an impact

If you’d like to make a difference in the lives of children whilst spending time outdoors, The Gratitude Run by Distance for Difference (D4D) is the event for you! It takes place on Saturday, 22 October 2022, at the beautiful Lourensford Wine Estate, Somerset West. All funds raised will go towards various children’s chari ties being supported by D4D.

Whether you’re a runner or enjoy walking, you have three options to choose from. Says Stéphan Pieterse, Founder of D4D: “The 5 km Fun Run/Walk is ideal for young and old as you set your own pace. Bring your four-legged best friend to join in the fun - just remember the leash! The 10 km Trail Run offers one of the most scenic trails running routes in the Western Cape. The last option is a four-hour, 3 km Team Relay Run. Runners enter as a team (3, 4 or preferably 5 members) and run laps of 3 km each (3 x 4 x 5 Team Relay). Indeed, an ideal team-building option for schools and organisations.”

Distance For Difference, is a registered non-profit organisation which, over the last seventeen years, made a significant contribution towards the wellbeing of children in South Africa. They have a solid track record with great governance and amazing people with a passion for making an impact. Over the past seven teen years, we’ve raised and distributed more than R11 million. “We are indeed blessed to bless others.”
