Heritage Day on 24 September recognises and celebrates the cultural wealth of our nation. On this day, we as South Africans are encouraged to celebrate our culture and the diversity of our beliefs, traditions, language, food, and our creative expression - a nation that belongs to all its people. Heritage Day is also celebrated among many South African households with an informal braai. Lighting a fire is in our blood, and standing in circles around the fire comes instinctively, braai signature dishes, enjoying the day with family and friends. Heritage Day is not only celebrated among South Africans, but also growing internationally among expatriates in the USA, Canada, the UK, Sweden, Taiwan, Dubai, the Netherlands, Hong Kong, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, Australia to name a few. South Africa will be blazing with braais on 24 September, celebrating Heritage Day with various events staged throughout the country to commemorate this day.

The Cape West Coast (Weskus) is a place awe-inspiring, jaw-droppingly beautiful, and so magical, you would need weeks to take it all in. Stretching from Malmesbury to the border of the Northern Cape at Touws River. The Cape West Coast is best known for its beautiful beaches and the quaint, towns that populate the region and the beautiful sight of the wild flowers in spring.

Towns such as Langebaan, Lambert’s Bay, Paternoster, Jocobsbaai, Saldanha have all become a home-away-from-home for many Western Cape locals and are havens for those looking to escape the city.

A mountain bike challenge, agricultural show, spring flowers, country charm – Aurora is a must-visit this September. Just inland from the West Coast town of Velddrif, along a stretch of beautiful country road, lies the picturesque town of Aurora, nestled at the foot of the Piketberg Mountains, only 185 km from Cape Town.On the 3rd of September, the town will be hosting its not-to-be missed Om Die Berg mountain bike challenge. The Om Die Berg event promises to be a favourite among mountain bike and outdoor enthusiasts, with the routes navigating beautiful farm lands, veld and mountain side scenery. Also taking place in Aurora on the 3rd and 4th of September – and the starting point for the Om Die Berg cycle routes - is the annual Aurora Sandveld Skou. While in town, be sure to visit the impressive Dutch Reformed Church, and take a trip to McClear’s Beacon, a national monument situated on the farm Klipfontein. Also take a drive up the mountain to the Danielshoogte Private Reserve and experience spectacular views of the valley - on clear days, Table Mountain and St Helena Bay can be seen. In Spring, the flowers here are spectacular as nature unfolds her annual wildflower spectacle.

Aurora forms part of the Bergrivier district (alongside the towns of Velddrif, Piketberg and Porterville) – a beautiful area on Cape Town’s doorstep that offers a vast array of activities and accommodation options, as well as some of the most pristine and untouched nature reserves, wetlands, lagoons and more.

“This small, once unheard-of gem is a village of hidden surprises where visitors can look forward to breathtaking scenery, beautiful architecture, and a rich and warm welcome from the local community. Added to this is the incredible night skies, the abundant flowers to be found here in Spring, beautiful mountain scenery with dramatic rock formations, and a wide variety of bird life – making Aurora a birdwatcher’s paradise,” says Nomonde Ndlangisa, CEO of Bergrivier Tourism.

The West Coast coastline is nothing short of picturesque. You won’t know if you’re really in South Africa or actually on a Greek island. Definitely enjoy the white beaches and turquoise waters, but be sure to also venture inland.

The area offers diverse scenery from calm turquoise ocean, magnificent sand dunes to incredible sandstone rock formations. The Cederberg is known for its harsh rocky outcrops, and the Rocklands Climbing area is a tick-box for any active climber – rookie or veteran – looking to test his skills.

Places to visit: Westcoast National Park, West Coast Fossil Park, !Khwa ttu San Culture and Education Centre, and Bokkomlaan in Velddrif.

Through the years, there have been many committed volunteers who have kept eyes on the herds and reported anything un-toward. This has been vital in preserving and protecting their habitat, and to help ensure that they are kept freeroaming for future generations.

For individual park dates and participating parks, visit: http://www.sanparks.org/ about/events/parks_week/default.php Parks excluded in the Western Cape are: Namaqua and the Boulders and Cable way section of Table Mountain National Park.

South African National Parks (SANParks) will be launching its 17th annual SA National Parks Week from 11 - 16 September 2022. This initiative in partnership with Total South Africa and First National Bank, is in line with SANParks vision statement of “A Sustainable National Park System Connecting Society”. Since its inception in 2006; National Parks Week, under the theme ‘Know Your National Parks’, has seen an influx of over 619 252 day visitors in all participating parks.

SANParks Acting Chief Executive Officer, Hapiloe Sello says that the idea of a national parks focus week is a world-wide campaign. “The week was estab lished in a bid to cultivate a sense of pride in South Africa’s natural, cultural and historical heritage, protected by the national parks system.”

As a young girl, Leanne Dryburgh spent hours in her dad’s darkroom watching the images magically appearing - dreaming of becoming a photographer. In 1989, her dream became a reality when she was accepted to study a 3-year diploma in photography. “I have been behind the lens ever since. My camera is an extension of my core. My being,” Leanne says. “I began my career as a Wildlife Photographer in the Okavango Delta of Bot swana, and sold those images to help support and create awareness for the Endangered Wildlife Trust.”

“Help us protect one of the last remaining herds of Southern African wild horses. They are a National Treasure”, Leanne concludes.

The Rooisand Wild Horses calendar 2023 is now available. It includes narratives about the horses: the herd, individuals and their survival. All photographs are available to purchase as prints on fine art archival canvas or paper, and also for electronic use. A percentage of sales goes to the Wild Horse Fund. For more information visit www.rooisandwildhorses.com

SA National Parks Week has proved to be a successful campaign in terms of education and awareness of conservation issues. “The survival of the South African national parks system and our natural and cultural heritage lies in the people of South Africa. Environmental education and protection are the responsi bility of everyone, not just a privileged few,” said Sello.

“This initiative aims to give the public an understanding of the role that SAN Parks plays as custodian of the country’s natural heritage. If we are to create a sense of ownership of the natural heritage of South Africa in all South Africans, then all South Africans must be able to have access to such. We especially want our young people to take advantage of this opportunity because this heritage will be under their protection in the near future,” concluded Sello.

Don’t miss out on this annual event to experience South Africa’s beautiful natural heritage #LiveYourWild.

“I became aware of The Wild Horses when I moved to the Overberg in 2013 and in 2016 on a long walk near our home, we stumbled across a lone injured stallion. I got hold of the ‘Horse Watchers’ and learnt that it was Brassy, who had separated himself from the herd to heal after challenging another stallion. Furthermore, I joined the Horse Watch Group, and have been involved ever since. It was easy for me to pick up my camera, and quickly I realised that a Zoom lens is imperative as the minute you go close, their dynamic changes.”

The week grants free access to most of the 22 national parks for day visitors, especially people from the local communities. It should be noted that free access to parks does not include free access to accommodation facilities and other tourist activities. Some of the parks will be extending the week to include the weekend.

“I became interested in their bloodlines, who belonged to whom, what their history is, and slowly started meeting people who had studied the horses many years before me. Our mission to keep these magnificent creatures free-roaming and at a respectful distance from humans. They have proved that they survive incredibly well on their own – in their Vlei. Educating is the most important part of our mission.”

“As the City, we need to continue to do more to support our LEAP officers, so we have invested in improving the facilities where our staff work from. This Bishop Lavis facility is an example of our commitment to making sure our staff have the best resources to work from,” said Alderman JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security.

Walking into Henri’s, you’ll be greeted by the owner, Pierre and his staff, who will treat you like guests in our own home. Henri’s combines an inspired menu with a casually sophisticated setting in a heritage house conveniently situated on Somerset West Main Road. We also welcome larger groups, our top floor has been renovated and can be used for private functions. Our inviting, comfortable dining room is the perfect place to enjoy a great meal. Our menu can be described as comfort food with a modern global influence. We are well known for our aged grass-fed beef as well as the freshest local seafood. Alongside our à la carte menu, we offer a light lunch menu during the day and also have a kiddies menu. We also serve homemade, thin based pizza cooked in a wood-fired oven. One of the key priorities is safety; and this JOC speaks to the need for a professional, efficient disaster management response to keep our communities safe. This facility meets all the needs required to efficiently respond to any kind of eventuality. It will help better coordinate the various strands of disaster risk management. From Disaster Management, at both provincial and municipal levels, and the South African Police Service to Provincial and Municipal Traffic, the Fire Department and the National Sea Rescue Institute, all these services - and more - are housed under one roof.

Mossel Bay gets state-of-the-art

“With this JOC, its impressive equipment, staffed with brave, dedicated firefighters, medical professionals, police officers, IT experts and sea rescue personnel, lives will be saved and the safety of residents improved,” said the Premier at the official opening ceremony.

The Centre had humble beginnings. It started out as 3 containers, but over the past few years, it has been transformed into a state-of-the-art facility of 800 square metres, on 3 levels from where safety and emergency services can be centralised and deployed. The project was the brainchild of 5 neighbourhood watch organisations (NHWs) who saw the need for a central location from where emergency operations could be carried out from.

Since inception in 2019, LEAP has collectively delivered 1 100 new officers in communities impacted by high crime rates. Law Enforcement has more than tripled its arrest rate in recent years due to increased investment, with 50% of these arrests being drug-related. As of 31 July 2022, LEAP officers have made 8 500 arrests overall since the first deployment in February 2020.

Among the JOC’s features are: The Southern Cape South African Police Service radio server is housed at the Centre; Mossel Bay currently has a network of 200 CCTV cameras linked to the JOC; A helipad for two helicopters run on fuel donated by local communities; R15 million was spent on making the JOC deaf, blind and wheelchair-friendly for staff with disabilities. It was the specific intent to employ people with disabilities at the Centre.

Meanwhile, the Killarney site is the most used multipurpose event venue in Cape Town with a pre-Covid total of 200 events per year, with 70 of those being charity events for worthy causes. It hosts a range of motor and motorcycling events for all people in the Western Cape, but also non-motorised sporting events like cycling, duathlons and marathons.

The sport contributes R357 million to Cape Town’s economy while supporting an extensive industry and thousands of jobs in race manufacturing, trading, servicing, repairs, parts and accessories. It also draws international and South African competitors, manufacturers, fans, and sponsors who come for extended stays and investments.

The property is ideal for retail and commercial development primarily related to sport, leisure and tourism with uses such as retail outlets on the ground level, hotel, medical suites, conference and exhibition facilities and offices which is regarded as consistent with the City’s objective for this property, given the significant investment and job opportunities.

The two significant property lease items, are the Killarney Motor Raceway and Erf 2189 in Granger Bay which is an integral part of the Green Point Common, tucked in alongside the DHL Stadium. These transactions are yet again prime examples of how the Economic Growth Directorate team uses immovable property assets to underpin our economic and social recovery strategy. One of the cornerstones of this administration is sound governance, and this is one of the main reasons Cape Town is able to attract significant investment that creates opportunities.

Joint Operation Centre offi cer milestone to make Cape Town safer

The strides through increasing Law Enforcement resources make it evident that both the City and Western Cape Government are ready to play an even bigger role in crime prevention, helping the SAPS to make communities safer. In particular, the Granger Bay site, of some 7 000 m², packs opportunity beyond its modest footprint. The development of the site was offered through a public tender, which proposed the long-term lease of the erf in exchange for a market related rental. Given the location of the property adjacent to DHL Stadium, close to the Green Point Athletic stadium, Green Point Urban Park, and various other sport facilities, and near the V&A Waterfront.

The programme is making encouraging progress towards making Cape Town safer by investing in more resources. All LEAP officers have undergone the required training, including Peace Officer Training, a Traffic Warden Certificate, and training in the City’s by-laws. The new officers will enforce by-laws and assist enforcement agencies with crime prevention, which will include stop and searches and house searches in conjunction with SAPS.

A CCTV control room will also soon be operational in this facility to monitor the area and assist with convictions and despatch of officers to incidents. The facility has its own EPIC (Emergency Policing Incident Control) Centre where staff track and monitor live operational data. Officers stationed here will be able to plan, coordinate, and complete admin processes such as logging the fines that are issued on the portable EPIC devices.

NEWSPAGE 4 THE NEWSPAPER

Cape Town City Council has taken milestone decisions by approving leases that secure the socio-economic contribution of Killarney Raceway and unlock commercial development to compliment the Green Point common and stadium offering.

Joey‛s Meat Products

There is a big difference between a braaiwors and a Boerewors, as braaiwors may contain up to 40% soya and enough water for the additives to absorb. Some additives can absorb over 20 times its own weight. Boerewors are legislated to stay pure and must contain 90% meat. The other 10% contributes to spice, sauce, binder and casing.

A big part of the grill is the sophisticated products that takes time and effort to construct. Flavours need to come together. Products need to be nurtured and kept away from an open flame - one such product is Boerewors. Even the best Boerewors can be treated wrong on a grill, and all the juices and flavours can be lost in the coals. We as South Africans are proud of the Boerewors legacy. As a butcher, we strive in producing the best possible Boerewors and believe that anyone braaing it, serving it or tasting it can do so with confidence, knowing that the person who made this is proud of their legacy product.

Joey’s Meat Products was started in 1994 by Fanie Liebenberg and his sister Joey, who decided to make Boerewors for the community. Within two years, their Boerewors became so popular that they moved their business to an industrial area in Brackenfell.

The Tricks of the Trade Some butcheries will ride the wave of a good well renown spice, but forget that it’s not only the spice that makes the Boerewors unique, but the complete process from selecting the correct meat. When making Boerewors, the butcher must decide if he or she is making a true heritage product that is pure according to legislation, or if he or she is just using previous shelf products and leftover trim with enough spices to hide any impurities or additives. How do you make an outstanding Boerewors?

The Fork Test: The texture of the Boerewors will tell you how pure the meat:spice:sauce ratio is. One can do the simple fork test. This is done by cutting open the sausage after cooking and gently pressing a small piece down. If the Boerewors starts to crumble, then you know it’s free from gums and additives. If the Boerewors swells heavily when cooking, then you know there are some additives reacting with the moisture over 70 degrees. 981 949 975 854 Branches

Light the fi re – “Ons gaan nou braai”

A good Boerewors must enjoy preference over all the other meat on the grill. Crafted beforehand with delicacy and care in mind, Boerewors must be slowly braaied to perfection over evenly, not too hot, distributed coals.

With all the covid restrictions set aside, we find ourselves wanting to socialize more. What better way to do this other than to invite some friends and light a fire? With Heritage Day being celebrated on 24 September, what better way to celebrate the day with food that our forefathers enjoyed.

Mouthfeel: Lastly, the mouthfeel when biting into the Boerewors and eating, the skin normally a delicate sheep casing, will give away gently. Its job is done; its only purpose is to hold the raw meat together before and during cooking, which leaves a crumbly soft textured meat to chew. When using trimmings, the sinew will contract into what feels like small hard pieces, that you don’t want.

The brand was built by the Liebenberg family and today managed by the two Liebenberg sons, Daneel and Ruaan with the support from their proud parents.

3798 Monte Vista - 069 527 4709 Strand - 021

We mainly use one beef cut, called Brisket, to make our Boerewors. The meat comes from free-range cattle grazing on the grasslands of Botswana and Namibia. It is then processed and ground with spices and a sauce and stuffed into a delicate, natural sheep casing. There are no meat cut-offs or other cuts in our Boerewors. Our Boerewors contain only Omega-3 rich beef fat and pork back fat, and contains NO hormones, NO antibiotics, NO trimmings, NO hearts, NO species, NO fillers, and NO MDM/MRM/MSM meat. You are welcome to test it and then understand why our Boerewors, with a soft texture and a consistent taste, takes precedence on any braai grill every time. Other meat product available in our stores include Fillet, Sirloin and Rump Steaks, Hamburger Patties, Mince, Spareribs, Droëwors & Biltong, Salami Sticks and many more. Ruaan & Daneel Liebenberg

The Taste Profile: When enjoying any meat, the spice and sauce must compliment the meat in a gentle way, not overpowering it nor replacing the taste of the meat with an artificial meat taste to compensate for other fillers. One advantage of free-range meat is its natural flavour.

The most important factor for making Boerewors is consistency. The consumer gets familiarized with the taste and texture of the product they buy. If different meat and shelf products already containing spices are used each time, the result would be different and can sometimes result in a sour taste.

A few years later, the business said goodbye to Joey, and Fanie made his family part of the business. Today, Joey’s Meat Products owns its own factory with distribution points across the Peninsula. Currently, there are seven stores that trade under the name Joey’s Meat Products. Our passion has always been to manufacture high-quality products, and this continues to drive us forward with every product. We built on the success of the Boerewors, and today our product range includes a wide variety of products.

The Product

The two sons had the privilege to visit IFFA 2022, a meat processing tradeshow in Frankfurt, Germany recently. They gained insight into new machinery, techniques and other heritage products from different countries. Ideas were shared and compared. Tales were told. They learned that the current packaging method, consisting of a virgin plastic bag, has the smallest carbon footprint of any other packaging method out there. When it comes to the Famous Joey’s Boerewors, our traditional method and secret recipe has been unchanged for 26 years. We produce more than a ton of Joey’s Boerewors every day in a temperature-controlled factory to meet demand. We know our quality is unparalleled.

“Students in the early years also learn best when the learning is presented through play and where they are provided the opportunity to explore, discover and make necessary connections – where they can discover that there are many ways, possibilities, and perspectives and that mistakes are necessary and accepted as part of the learning process – thus building resilience.”

With changing times in all industries comes the need to reflect and reassess, and education is not exempt from this.

hospitality

There can be no doubt that the early years in education are the most important ones, as they lay the foundation for all future learning.

“Research is clear that early childhood development drives success in school and life,” says Desiree Hugo, Academic Head: Schools Division at ADvTECH, Africa’s leading private education provider. available from Photographer:JoanWard

Says Marius Stols of The IIE’s School of Hospitality & Service Management: “There is a huge need in Africa for academically trained hospitality professionals, particularly when one considers that many executive positions in the African hos pitality industry are not filled by those from the continent.”

Early childhood represents a critical time to shape productivity, when the brain develops rapidly to build the foundation of cognitive and character skills necessary for success in school, health, career and life. Early childhood education fosters cognitive skills along with attentiveness, motivation, self-control and sociabilitythe character skills that turn knowledge into know-how and people into productive citizens.“Thepedagogical focus in the early years must be on building academic con fidence so that students develop a love of learning, and are prepared to enter future learning opportunities and ultimately the world of work with the skillset and knowledge that will ensure that they are adaptive and can successfully respond and contribute to their immediate and extended communities positively.”

According to an African Development Bank estimate, Africa’s population has grown to over one billion since 2010, with the middle class now 350-million strong.

“As forward-thinking, innovative organisations; whether our schools are situated in the private sector or public sector, we need to constantly reflect and take a good look at what we are doing, how we are doing it, and how we need to change. We need to listen carefully to our learning community and reimagine our spaces.” to enter the industry early years

In world hospitality terms, Africa is the final frontier for rapid development and expansion, with staggering opportunities for development.

A tertiary education | Vital

Crucial importance | investing in

education EDUCATIONPAGE 6 THE NEWSPAPER

While it is still possible to build a career in hospitality without a degree or diploma, increasingly employers are being more selective and recognise a degree as an indication of competence, signalling those students have learnt about and worked in the industry (through internships) and have the capability to contribute, learn and grow, often more rapidly than those without a degree. A bachelor’s degree provides students with knowledge, skills and abilities in most aspects of hospitality operations, on which they can build when they start working full-time. Graduates

understand the inter-relationship and interdependencies between various func tional areas. They also learn how to analyse and research workplace issues, solve problems, make decisions, and work in teams.

When students feel safe, they will be open to learning. Therefore, the environ ment becomes incredibly important as the third teacher – it creates that safe space – building strong relationships and making important connections with the essential learning elements.

“Raising the profile of this stage of learning in all schools must – where it is not yet the case - become a priority alongside the effective management of the transi tion between the home environment to a school environment.”

Says Sindile Xulu, CEO of TIA360 (Tourism Investment Africa), a platform to mobilise and stimulate investment in Africa’s tourism: “It is vital that Africa’s hospitality industry is supported and staffed by professionals from the continent because they are often more culturally aware and sensitive to the needs of local customers. They are also often the first point of introduction to their country for overseas guests, so they are better positioned to offer advice and demonstrate local hospitality.”

It is this expanding segment of potential travellers that presents a major expan sion opportunity for the hospitality industry.

But it’s not only local tourist numbers that are growing. In recent years, interna tional travel to Africa has expanded immensely. With this increase in visitor numbers, comes a proliferation of hotels, resorts, lodges and restaurants and the need to staff them with properly trained people filling all sorts with positions – from MDs to managers, in front of house, HR, mar keting and PR professionals and more.

Once applicants contact the district planning office, it will trigger a pre-application consultation, and City offi cials will guide the applicant on the process. Thereafter, the application is evaluated, which includes public participation.Whereatemporary package plant is recommended, the City issues an endorsement letter supporting the tem porary package plant. The developer should apply to external authorities (DWS and DEA & DP) for water use and environmental approvals separately with respect to the temporary package plant. The applicant enters into a Water Services Intermediary (WSI) agreement with the City to establish and ensure compliance monitoring.

City of Cape Town Develops

After months of failed rescue attempts, Marine Wildlife Specialist Claire Taylor and her patrol team decided to take direct action and grab the sleeping seal directly!

Khayelitsha is a poor Cape Town settlement where jobs are few and prospects are slim. But should that preclude it from entrepreneurial opportunity?

For many organisations, sustainability is a corporate responsibility and a nec essary step towards enhancing future-fitness. For others, it’s a marketing must. But in South Africa, it is a survival imperative. Nothing, if not resourceful, South Africans will often regard the urgency of the issues confronting them as a catalyst for inventive problem-solving.

For many months, the seal welfare and monitor team of Marine Wildlife Manage ment Programme in the V&A Waterfront have been trying to rescue a particularly elusive Cape fur seal, which had become entangled with multiple nooses of improp erly discarded fishing line and other litter items. This little seal happened to be particularly stubborn, refusing to rest on the platforms and isolated areas preferred by other seals (and where the team can usually reach them), and instead prefer ring to sleep on top of the bulbous bows of ships docked in the Port of Cape Town.

Persistence Pays Off

A standard procedure for temporary wastewater ‘packaged plants’

|

“Working with the seals in the V&A Waterfront and the Cape Town Harbour is something that we are very passionate about. Sometimes, it is easy to assist the seals that are distressed. Sometimes, it can take months. The suffering of this seal has been haunting and taunting us for nine months! And the frustration asso ciated with not being able to help this animal has been unbelievable. Being able to finally get all the entanglements off this animal is really such a great relief. It does, however, make me wonder about all the other animals that are out there, suffer ing like this one, without being seen, and without receiving any help,” said Claire.

The City of Cape Town wishes to inform residents, developers and professionals in the built environment about a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) geared toward applying for temporary package plants in areas draining into the Potsdam, Zandvliet and Macassar Waste Water Treatment Works (WWTWs). The aim of the SOP is to facilitate sustainable development in areas where the City’s wastewater treatment capacity is constrained.

A developer or built environment professional needs to subscribe to the Development Management’s online portal, PlanandBuilditRight@capetown.gov.za for more information.

In 2019, Distell, South Africa’s leading producer of wines, spirits, ciders and ready-to-drinks, partnered with the Western Cape’s Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, and the Cape Town City Council, to establish GreenUp. Explains Charles Wyeth, Distell’s acting group manager of sustainabil ity: “The goal of our private/public partnership was to start cleaning up Khayelitsha, while also generating jobs and building skills.”

It is estimated environmental assistants each collect a daily average of 200 kg of recyclables that would otherwise find their way into landfills. The waste - glass and PET bottles, paper, metals, plastics - comes from households, taverns, streets and informal dumps.

The first step envisaged by GreenUp was to start clearing the area of beverage packaging and other solid waste. Waste pickers would be equipped with protective gear and custom-built trolleys and trained in collecting, separating, and process ing what they describe as “post-consumer materials” for recycling. They would also be taught financial, business, and operational skills to negotiate with and supply their pickings to recyclable buy-back centres established for the purpose. Buy-back centres would process the materials for on-sale to packaging manufacturers for the cycle to repeat itself. There are now 165 environmental assistants, as waste pickers are known, in Khayelitsha, supplying to seven buyback centres in that area.

The Clarus Fusion Wastewater plant by Maskam Water is purposely designed for decentralized applications, and answers to the need that the effluent quality meets DWS Standards. As this is a pioneering initiative within the City, the City will facilitate the contact both nationally and provincially to fast-track approvals. Furthermore, the City will also support the process and be part of any inspections and handovers throughout the process.

Bringing the seal on board to cut the entanglements - Grabbing seals out of the water is not the team’s usual method - but this situation was quite unique! As time goes on, nooses of plastic and fishing lines tend to become tighter as they slide lower on the seal’s neck, and the risk of death becomes greater due to infection or snagging on a submerged object. For the good of the animal, the team needed to act. These entanglements had already cut very deeply into the seal’s flesh, and although these resilient animals can heal from these wounds surprisingly quickly, the healing process cannot start until the entanglement has been removed. The seal was tangled in 14 separate pieces of pollution - two of which were so long that they looped around its neck twice. Most of these entanglements were fishing lines, but there was also a mix of other synthetic fibres and even a “dispos able” face mask. While this was a particularly bad example of entanglement, even one of these lines has the potential to kill a seal, and the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation’s Marine Wildlife Management Programme has successfully freed many other entangled seals in recent months (fortunately only a few have been quite as elusive as this little one).

Story from Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

Barnes did not get his partnership with Edison on his first interview. He did get a chance to work in the Edison offices, at a very nominal wage. Barnes made a point to showcase his more intangible attributes to Edison any chance he could. His unrelenting mindset was: “I came here to go into business with Edison, and I’ll accomplish this end if it takes the remainder of my life.”

Adopting this mindset guarantees only two outcomes to life: one, that you will obtain that which you desire, or two, you will die in the pursuit of that which you desire. Months passed and still, his goal went unrealized. He was constantly intensifying his desire to become the business associate of Edison. Edison had just completed work on a new office device, at the time named the Edison Dictating Machine. He was having trouble getting his salesmen to take on the invention. In this struggle, Barnes saw his opportunity. He believed that he could sell the machine and approached Edison with a plan. Upon reviewing the strategy, Edison gave him his chance. Barnes took full advantage and went on a roll, selling the Ediphone. This business venture earned Barnes lots of money, however, more importantly, he accomplished something much greater in discovering the awesome power of thought.

Barnes arrived in Orange and managed to talk his way into meeting Edison. Upon meeting the young man, Edison says, “He stood there before me, looking like an ordinary tramp, but there was something in the expression of his face which conveyed the impression that he was determined to get what he had come after. I gave him the opportunity he asked for, because I saw he had made up his mind to stand by until he succeeded.”

Barnes had a burning internal drive to go into business with America’s most famed inventor, Thomas Edison. He was lacking in a few areas though, he had no invention to pitch, no particular skills of use, and he didn’t have the amount of money to pay his rail fare to Orange, New Jersey. Nevertheless, Barnes made his way to the train station, hopped onto a freight train and squatted his way to East Orange.

How to turn your desires into Gold

After a tragic accident and six months of holistic therapy, Dicklin Goosen is going from strength to strength. Learning that your child was involved in an accident is every parent’s worst nightmare. And for the Goosens of Wellington, that fateful day was on 1 December 2021, when their 7-year-old son Dicklin Goosen was hit by a car. The accident left Dicklin with a severe traumatic brain injury, a skull fracture and harm to his right eye – which meant multi-disciplinary therapy was needed to ensure he made some form of recovery. Dicklin was re-referred to St Joseph’s Home and was admitted on 5 February 2022. “Upon admission, he was wheelchair-bound and needed complete assistance for all activities of daily living such as bathing, eating, dressing and even playing,” says occupational therapist, Kashiefa Creighton. “Dicklin received intense rehabilitation and was seen for occupational therapy, physiotherapy and speech therapy. And as part of his rehabilitation process, he attended St Joseph’s School daily.” His smile grew each day and his fierce fighting spirit aided his progress, and now, after only six months of holistic care, Dicklin has made remarkable progress in all aspects of his daily living. “He can walk short distances independently and uses a walking frame for long distances. His improved mobility enabled him to enjoy a variety of activities, and he particularly enjoys playing in the park on his favourite ride, the merry-go-round,” adds Kashiefa. In 2020, St Joseph’s Home launched a specialised play park that was customised for children with disabilities – a great tool in therapy and inclusive play. Better yet, the little patients love it!

Dicklin Goosen - Always striving to give his best

“One of the greatest challenges we face in rehabilitation of survivors with acquired brain injuries is the ability of the brain and body to work together in a synchronised way, which is called cognitive-motor ability, co-ordination and dexterity in our terms,” Kashiefa explains. “Dicklin has improved so much that he has retained all his basic learning skills and has overcome most of his classroom challenges. He can write with improved pencil control and can also use technology such as the classroom tablet for certain integrated learning activities.”

PAGE 10 THE NEWSPAPER

One of the chief characteristics of Barnes’ desire was that it was definite. He wanted to work with Edison, not for him. Consider this man’s determination amidst his circumstance. He had no money, no guarantee he’d even get to meet the legendary inventor, nothing promising to offer, and absolutely no hint of a reason to believe that Edison would take him on in any capacity. In reality, all Barnes did have was desire.

In order to create Stellenbosch wine and terroir experts, the Stellenbosch Wine Routes Sommelier Bootcamp will be launched this month. Aimed at sommeliers, hospitality professionals and wine media across the country, this bootcamp will be a five-day intensive course featuring both online and practical immersion in Stellenbosch. It will cover aspects such as viticulture, tutored technical tastings, and site visits with producers and experts. The delegates will have to complete a practical assessment to be awarded their Stellenbosch ambassador’s pin.

Stellenbosch Wine Routes Launches Sommelier Bootcamp LIFESTYLE

As part of Devmark Property Group’s The Retirement Collection, Langebaan Manor is its ninth retirement village in 30 years.

To remain competitive, renowned wine regions must not only produce quality wines, but tell engaging stories about themselves.

While the quality track record of Stellenbosch is undeniable, the wine route is now going beyond this by embarking on an educational programme to give som meliers a common language to describe Stellenbosch’s terroir, so that they can communicate the district’s unique wine story and inspire conversations.

A light bar menu is available to complement the bar offering, ranging from cheese, olives, oysters and beetroot gravlax, to jamón, steak tartare, caviar and a classic crayfish cocktail.

Devmark Property Group’s new retirement village, Langebaan Manor, has recorded sales to the value of R170 million, proving once again that the West Coast is high on the list of those looking for a more relaxed lifestyle.

The Old Bailey’s whiskey wall features 68 Private Whiskey Lockers in glass with brass trim, stocked with each member’s personal selection.

The Old Bailey features a selection of premium wines, spirits and cocktails. Pro prietor/business partner Liam Tomlin tips his hat to his Irish roots to take delight in a specially curated list of more than 320 whiskeys, sourced from more than 14 countries around the world. Whiskey tastings may be booked at The Old Bailey with a minimum of 24-hour notice (maximum 10 guests, or 48 hours’ notice for bigger groups). These educa tional tasting journeys start with how whiskey is made, how to do proper whiskey analysis and consuming whiskey ultimately to bring out its true value and flavour

“Stellenbosch is a recognised quality brand in key markets, but it is much more exciting to learn about the region in an immersive experience,” says Elmarie Rabe of Stellenbosch Wine Routes.

The bootcamp aims to create a single, relatable story on the region’s typicity.

The Old Bailey Whiskey Bar has opened on the top floor of Cape Town’s new three-level dining hot spot, The Bailey, at 91 Bree Street. The Stellenbosch Wine Routes Sommelier Bootcamp will be based on the edu cational Stellenbosch terroir toolkit released earlier this year, addressing the need for knowledge on regional typicity. It is aimed to equip sommeliers, buyers and retailers with easily accessible facts to create memorable experiences of Stellen bosch and its wines, covering topics such as the history of Stellenbosch, terroir on a microclimate level and its influence on specific expressions of Stellenbosch grown varietals.

With civil construction and electrical services well under way, construction of the first units at Langebaan Manor will commence around October this year. “The 100 freehold homes and 26 sectional title apartments will be completed over the next 36 months, with the 25 serviced healthcare apartments expected to be available shortly thereafter,” says Ehlers. The town offers excellent holiday facilities and experiences from golf courses to water sports, the nearby West Coast National Park to the West Coast Fossil Park. The development comprises authentic West Coast architecture with different house types and soon to be launched apartments to choose from. The develop ment offers state-of-the-art security, affordable levies, a Healthcare Centre, as well as other amenities to give residents peace of mind and a stress-free lifestyle.

Home Care – what you need to know AJ Burns Breathing life into his work

Many people don’t understand exactly what is meant with Home Care and that various conditions can successfully be treated at home and many of them are par tially or fully covered by certain medical schemes.Someof the conditions/situations that can be treated at home by a reputable Home Health Care supplier, are for example: Posthospitalisation care including rehabilitation, Recuperating and rehabilitation after a stroke, Receiving intravenous medication, Ventilation at home for stabilised patients, Care and nursing of patients with life-threat ening illnesses such as cancer, Care for the elderly that need assistance with daily activities, Care for Dementia patients (like Alzheimer’s disease) in a familiar environ ment, Covid-19 care for stable patients and Wound care.

AJ Burns is producing bold, dynamic works of contrast and texture with his mouth. Burns painted prodigiously as a child, but was “actively discouraged” by his teachers and family from taking art in high school. He swapped paint for a set square, ruler and pencil, focused on maths, and went on to study civil engineering atAfterUCT.years as a successful entrepreneur in the UK and SA, he founded a vodka distillery and then Covid, prohibition hit. At a loose end, AJ attended an art class with an old friend and a good 35 years after he’d laid down his brushes, he found himself “playing with acrylics” in a neighbour’s garage. He was intrigued to see how the paint moved, but there was no electricity in the garage. Without a hair dryer, heat gun or even a straw, he blew it with his mouth to see what would happen and loved the way one colour moved through another. A year on and AJ is still literally breathing his life into his large abstract works. “I love the unpredictability of it,” he enthuses. “The paint seems to come to life - it keeps moving even when I’ve finished. And the colours change during the drying process. The challenge lies in creating forms and keeping the paint and colours clean. I also struggle not to overwork a piece and not to aim for perfection: the imperfections are the beauty. With my engineering mindset, that’s sometimes dif ficult for me,” he says.

Message to young artists: “Have faith in your own instinct and don’t change to fit what others are expecting. Then find the courage to go and show your work to gallery owners. It’s hard to put your soul out there, but it’s the most important step.”

AJ is a little stunned by his success and the fulfilment he gets from the creative process. “Who knew life could be like this?” he muses.

“The opportunity to work with one of the great up-coming chefs in the UK and to be part of his team is quite humbling for me. When I get a bit of a break, I’ve got the pleasure of going to Italy or Spain and eating at other Michelin star restaurants to keep stimulating and growing my mind.”

A recipient of the 2019 Eat Out Nederburg Rising Star Award, he has honed his skills working under Luke Dale Roberts who is one of the best chefs in the country. Katlego will be taking up the position of head chef at Kudu restaurant in London.

A few important points: Does the home care supplier do an evaluation / assessment, performed by a Registered Nurse, before the commencement of service? Does the patient’s Care Plan adhere to scientifically based clinical guide lines? Does the home care supplier follow a patient-centred approach, and is the Care Plan individualised for the specific patient?

When people are desperate to appoint a home care supplier, they sometimes settle for the best price, no matter if all the so-called boxes are ticked. It is however essential to ask the right questions to be empowered to choose the best supplier for your needs, also of course accommodating your budget if your medical scheme doesn’t cover the care costs. If it is not necessary to convalesce in a hospital, the best home care supplier, providing this option, should be chosen.

One of the country’s most prominent garden lifestyle festivals returns after its inauguration last year, promising a fresh milestone for South Africa’s favourite village of oaks. Stellenbosch once again pulls out the stops for gardeners and lovers of the great outdoors in a 10-day-long festival that will transform its streets and surrounding countryside from 20 - 30 October.

American property investor Preston Haskell IV snapped up Dombeya Farm on auction 20 years ago, seeing the potential of the land on the slopes of the Helderberg mountains in South Africa’s winemaking heartland of the Stellenbosch ‘Golden Triangle’ famed for premium Cabernet Sauvignon. From the outset, the central focus has been the creation of premium terroir-driven wines, expressive of the vintage and recognised as among the finest of their style, with an emphasis of quality over quantity. Winemaker Rudolph Steenkamp said Haskell’s approach to creating true terroir expression, quality and depth in their wines started in the vineyards, by returning to the simplest viticultural methods and “farming the soil and not the vine”.

Once you have registered you will be promoted to join the Ciovita Strava club, where your progress in the race to the Absa Cape Epic, from 15 August to 15 September, will be tracked. The finalists will then be invited to the Ciovita Stellenbosch Store to attend the live lucky draw for the Absa Cape Epic race entry.

Garden Town Stellenbosch is an initiative of Visit Stellenbosch, which comprises the region’s tourism stakeholders and partners, including the Stellenbosch Munici pality and Stellenbosch Wine Routes. The objective is to grow the tourism and experience economy in Stellenbosch for the benefit of all communities. During the festival, the Stellenbosch CBD will be decorated with a flower theme and prominent installations. As with last year’s event, colourful floral displays will be added to public spaces in Bird Street. Look out for cars, bicycles, a Harley Davidson motorcycle and trolley adorned with flowers and on display around town.

“Haskell has become known and loved by regular visitors for beautiful surround ings and breath-taking views forming the backdrop to warm hospitality and great service from our passionate, knowledgeable team. Along with excellent food from our Longtable Restaurant it is the people who make the experience memorable, and we are proud that our team consistently delivers on this,” Mackenzie said.
