Millions of reviews Nothing but the best! “An artist’s paradise. A tranquil, peaceful and beautiful accommodation with an extraordinary history. We will now rate all rooms around the world by this hotel!”

Tourism Boom in Western Cape Western Cape tourism showed significant growth as the area continues to welcome local and international visitors for the summer season. International tourist are laughing all the way to South Africa with the Rand plunging to a five year record low. It has now become more affordable for more foreigners to come to South Africa. The weak Rand is drawing few complaints from America at R11.09 to the $1.00, Europe, at R15.16 to the €1.00, and tourists from the United Kingdom at R18.27 to the £1.00 (Forex - 26 January 2014). These foreign visitors have much more spending money available for accommodation, sightseeing entertainment and tours thereby permitting them to extend their stay, while visiting the Western Cape. "With the City having just received the top spot on the prestigious New York Times’ list of 52 Places to visit in 2014, and being awarded the World Design Capital (WDC 2014) title, “we expect more international and regional visitors

this year," said the City’s mayoral committee member for tourism, events and marketing, Grant Pascoe. Cape Town International Airport indicated an upturn in total arrivals compared to November and December 2012, with an increase of 2.07% for the month of December 2013 compared to the same period in 2012. The Tourism Business Council of SA (TBCSA)/FNB tourism business index compiled by consultancy firm Grant Thornton finished at 114.6 points at the end of the year versus the expected 110.8 points. The index covers the tourism accommodation sector, transport, attractions, meetings and conferences, with it being an overall indicator of business health in the tourism sector. Feedback from hotels, tour operators, major attractions and restaurants reflect a business increase better than the previous summer. Statistics show an increase in domestic visitors who chose not to spend their holiday overseas.

Congo Fever Patient condition improves According to a statement issued by Mediclinic South Africa, the 39-yearold female patient suffering from Congo fever at Mediclinic Vergelegen is showing continuous improvement. She is still in a critical but stable condition. She was previously placed in strict isolation and is now in contact isolation.

The patient was admitted to the clinic on 5 January with Congo fever confirmed by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD). As standard practice in such cases, the Western Cape Department of Health has been notified and strict insolation precautions have been implemented as necessary in the event of Congo Fever. The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has warned people who love spending time outdoors to protect themselves against tick bites. What is Congo Fever? It is contracted through the bite of an infected tick, usually the bontpootluise (Hyalomma tick), via the exposure to blood infected animals such as cattle and sheep or after contact with the blood of an infected patient.

Beaumont Primary School, situated in the Helderberg basin educate 1 200 learners from Grade R to Grade 7. The school has been awarded Eco School status for the past 5 years, and maintain certain standards on recycling, serving the community, learning about cultural heritage and the conservation of plants and animals. The school motto “Ut Prosim” (In Order to Serve) suit them well as they believe that true excellence is achieved by using success to enrich the lives of others less fortunate. Beaumont is very excited about the Recycling Swop Shop that opened last year at the Sir Lowry’s Pass Primary School. In this project, learners of the community are encouraged to bring bags of recycling to the swop shop. They receive points according to how much recycling they have brought in. They redeem these points in the swop shop for items of clothing, school stationery, school uniforms, books, toys or toiletries. This way the environment is kept clean and the children are taking an active role in creating a greener future. The school keeps the shop stocked with toiletries, books, toys and nonperishable food items received as donations from parents and the Somerset West community. Explore Brandy Country With a long, rich history in brandy making dating back to 1672, the world’s finest brandies emanate from South Africa. Rooted in age-old traditions, South African brandy is one of the country’s most iconic products; and is a most-loved distilled drink. The Western Cape Brandy Route and the R62 Brandy Route, might just be the only brandy routes in the world. For wine lovers to go on a brandy journey is not such a big leap: brandy is made from wine after all. The Western Cape Brandy Route leads you through the heart of fine wine country: Stellenbosch, Paarl, Franschhoek, Wellington and the new high-lying Elgin area.

Cango Wildlife Ranch, Oudtshoorn - Croc Cage Diving An adventurer’s haven lies nestled in the heart of the Little Karoo intriguing people from around the world with a thrilling world-first! The opportunity to come face-to-face with a prehistoric, cold-blooded creature, one that is sure to get your heart racing!

For an evocative introduction to and overview of the art and science of more than three centuries of Cape brandy making, begin your journey in Stellenbosch, at Van Ryn’s Brandy Cellar. A guided tour, comparative style tasting and brandyand-chocolate pairing unlock a cornucopia of delectable sights, sounds, smells and tastes. Move on to the renowned red wine cellar Kaapzicht which produces a pure potstill brandy. Louiesenhof winemaker, Stefan Smit learnt from veteran distiller Jos le Roux to make his Marbonne Potstill containing brandy aged for up to 16 years in oak. Beautifully restored 1712 Uitkyk, offers a 10 Year Old, and modern Tokara makes a rich pure pot-still five-year-old from fruit off 30-year-old vines. Paarl brings you Backsberg, the home of the eponymous Sidney Back brandies. Historic Laborie’s Alambic five-year-old brandy comes in an elegant, embossed 500ml bottle and Venerable Nederburg has resurrected its recently discovered

The Cango Wildlife Ranch, in the unique Karoo town of Oudtshoorn, presents its world-class natural encounters-programs, a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ opportunity for people to interact with incredible animals; such as the Cheetah, Tiger, Lemur, Giant Tegu, Cubs and Reptiles. In 2004, the owners of the ranch, Andrew and Glenn Eriksen, decided it was time to help change people’s perceptions of another animal, the enormous and feared Nile Crocodile. In 2006 they implemented Croc-cage diving, a world first in both adventure and conservation activities. Once your ticket is purchased, you climb into the steel reinforced cage and are slowly lowered into the water. You see the predator as clearly as it sees you! The cage is lowered next to the crocodile to ensure a really close view, close enough to count their teeth! You will be in safe, but in scary waters, as the underwater photographers capture every moment on camera. The intimidating experience of looking into the crocs eyes; not quite knowing how safe you are, or if he is going to strike … it is a truly humbling experience. They are fed three times a week, and the feeding times never coincide with a dive. The whole goal is to view them in their relax surroundings, completely unhindered! Cango Wildlife Ranch is on a par with some of the best animal experiences in the world and is one of only four facilities in Africa to have obtained accreditation from the Standards-Body in the zoological industry. The guided tour is on average an hour long, and an extra 15-20 minutes can be added per encounter.

What you need to know before selecting an airline If you’re flying domestically, it is easy to choose an airline. You can make your decision based on airfare, the number of flight connections and departure time. Flying internationally is a whole new ball game since there are various aspects to consider which are departure and arrival times, non-stop flights, connecting flights, safety and many more. Here are some facts you should consider when choosing which International Airline you wish to fly with on long-haul routes. Airfare - Price is indeed the biggest factor in deciding which airline you wish to fly with. It is important to compare airfare prices. However, it is not always a wise decision to consider the lowest airfare. Sometimes it is feasible to pay a little more for what you want. Here is a list of fees you need to investigate to make sure that they are included in your airfare before making your final booking: excess baggage, seat selection, food & beverage, cancellation/rebooking fees, taxes and surcharges. Safety - Have you ever wondered how safety conscious the airline is you are about to board? The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) updates the list of airlines and their compliance level each month. The website, rates 425 airlines around the world to help travelers choose a carrier with the best safety record. Safety ratings are based on the following international certification standards: airworthiness, operations, air navigation services, licensing, safety records, and

product ratings that include seating, in-flight entertainment, meals, beds, blankets, pillows and the carrier’s website.

firming your booking, you should verify the airline’s luggage restrictions on checked-in baggage, hand baggage and seat selection.

Non-Stop Flights - It is ideal to find an airline that travels to your international destination without any stop-overs. However, it is not always possible to fly direct, therefore you should find an airline partner that travels to your destination. Non-stop flights are usually more expensive, but will get you to your destination earlier. If you decide to make a stop-over, make sure you have enough time between your connecting flights.

Airline Frequent Flyer Program - Determine if you can earn extra miles on the airfare you’re paying by joining a frequent flyer Program with the airline. Most airlines give suitable fare to enable you to earn miles.

Airline On-time record & dependability The last thing you want while on vacation is to have your flight cancelled or delayed for hours or days. Verify the on-time statistics of the airline. can not only give you on-time performance and cancellation statistics for most major airlines worldwide, but can also supply information for specific flights, delays, routes, times, dates and even weather updates.

Airline cancellation and re-booking policy - You should review the airlines cancellation and re-booking policies before you fly. It may be worth your while to pay more for your ticket if they have a better policy available. Enjoy your flight!

In-flight entertainment & connectivity (IFE&C) For some travellers this is the most important consideration when flying internationally. The improvement of wireless connectivity and the increasing trend of passengers using their own personal devices such as iPhones, iPads, and tablets, have dramatically changed the face of the in-flight passenger experience. In-flight entertainment can include movies, satellite TV, cable TV, music videos, radio, games and Google Maps. Restrictions and allowances - Before con-

Airline loyalty - If you have airline loyalty the departure time, flight time, connections and price would not matter to you when booking a flight. Airline loyalty can also include better service, boarding the plane first, upgrades and seating with expanded leg space.

Be SunSmart and avoid skin cancer This is the time of the year where thousands of people are enjoying the summer sun at the most beautiful beaches. However the sun is also dangerous. The UV Index in our area is between 9 - 11+ which means the sun strength is very strong and the skin burns quickly. One of the most important causes of skin cancer is exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun or sunbeds. What is ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun?

- - -

Ultraviolet is part of the electromagnetic (light) spectrum that reaches the earth from the sun. It has wavelengths shorter than visible light, making it invisible to the naked eye. The ultraviolet (UV) radiation that affects the skin is classified as: UVA, (long wave) and UVB (short wave). UVA and UVB penetrate the atmosphere and play an important role in conditions such as skin aging, eye damage, and skin cancers.

- - - -

Facts on UVA (Long wave) UVA is the longest of the UV rays, penetrate the deeper layers of the skin and plays a major role in skin aging, skin wrinkling and skin cancer. UVA rays account for up to 95% of the UV radiation reaching the earth. UVA is the dominant tanning ray, causing damage to the skin’s DNA. Tanning booths or Tan Cans release 12 times more UVA as the sun. People using them are 2.5 more times likely to develop squamous cell carcinoma, and 1.5 times more likely to develop basal cell carcinoma. Less intense than UVB. Penetrates the skin more than UVB. Play major part in skin wrinkling. Penetrates glass and clouds.

Maintain healthy body weight - The key to successful weight loss is a commitment in making permanent adjustments to your diet and exercise program as well as your lifestyle. Get enough sleep - A good night’s rest help keep your mind and body healthy. Getting enough sleep can have many benefits such as: recharge immune system, boost brainpower, give more energy for the next day and lift the mood. Most adults need 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night. Take care of yourself - With all the demands of life there is limited time and energy available to take care of yourself. You may find yourself neglecting your own personal needs. Take care of your skin, hair, teeth and feet. Also make some time each day to spend on your own. Medical Checkup - You need to monitor your health and go for regular medical checkups after the age of 50. The regular management of blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar is important. Stress

are the events or situations that cause stress. Being unprepared for a situation could make a person develop stress. Situations which are recognized to be very stressful are associated with change, and with lack of control over what is happening. It is important that you can learn to identify your own responses to stress and develop the ability to deal with it accordingly. Avoid smoking - The use of tobacco products increase the risk of heart disease, respiratory infections, asthma and lung cancer. It also reduces the length and quality of your life and effect the people around you.

Facts on UVB (Short wave) UVB is responsible for burning, tanning, accelerating the skin aging and also plays a key role in the development of skin cancer. UVB varies by season, location and time of day.

Cellar Masters of the Month Achim & Takuan von Arnim

The history of Haute Cabriere dates back to 22 December 1694 when the French Huguenot Pierre Jourdan, was granted a piece of land in Olifantshoek - today known as Franschhoek – which he decided to name after his home town, Cabriere.

mental wine growing philosophy of “sun, soil, vine, man”, which revolves around the perfect harmony of nature’s elements coming together to create magic – with man playing only the role of a respectful conductor in creating a sum that’s bigger than its parts.

In the early 1980’s Achim von Arnim – then still Cellar Master at Boschendal – purchased a portion of this land, with his vision firmly set on the idea of producing wines in the style of the Champagne region. Following the tradition of the famous French Champagne houses, he planted the noble cultivars of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to produce his first Champagne-equivalent, known in South Africa as Cap Classique, and named this wine in honour of the original pioneer, Pierre Jourdan.

Today, the range encompasses two Cap Classiques – the Pierre Jourdan Brut and Pierre Jourdan Belle Rose, as well as a selection of still wines – the Pierre Jourdan Tranquille, the Haute Cabriere Chardonnay Pinot Noir, the Haute Cabriere Pinot Noir and the revolutionary Haute Cabriere Unwooded Pinot Noir. All wines are fantastically versatile, to be enjoyed on their own or with a variety of different foods.

A few years later, Achim discovered another piece of land – now known as Haute Cabriere - on the slopes of the Franschhoek Mountains, which reflected a similar type of terroir which he had encountered during his time as a student in Burgundy. He fondly recalls the day that the clay of Haute Cabrière stuck to the soles of his Levi’s boots in exactly the same way it did when he worked the vineyards of Burgundy. To him, this offered the inspiration to utilize the potential of these perfect growing conditions by producing a Burgundian-styled Pinot Noir and a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. And so, from its humble origins, the venture which until then, Achim had pursued more or less on the sideline to his daytime position at Boschendal,

grew to encompass a beautifully serene underground cellar built into the side of Franschhoek Mountain, which Achim opened exactly 300 years after Pierre Jourdan had been granted Cabriere – on 22 December 1994.

It is also an international competition involving an assessment of olive oils by a panel of expert tasters coordinated by Marco Oreggia, where tasters follow strictly controlled tasting procedures. Giulio Bertrand, owner of the Somerset West farm, went to Rome to accept the award and commented: “In last year’s Flos Olei we were excited to achieve 97 out of 100 for the fourth year in a row. Being one of only 11 oil producers in the world to achieve 98/100, the highest score ever

The other ten farms that achieved the same score are in Spain (two), Italy (seven) and Chile (one). Bertrand believes that the combination of Italian trees and expertise, an exceptional South African terroir and a rigid approach to quality at every stage of production has senabled Morgenster to achieve this level of excellence. Are you South Africa’s next MasterChef All amateur cooks who want to impress the MasterChef SA Judges with their unique culinary skills must diarise Saturday, 22 February 2014 where the South African MasterChef Season 3 Auditions will be held in Cape Town at Southern Sun The Cullinan. The open auditions for MasterChef South Africa require a pre-prepared cold dish. However, the process for subsequent audition rounds has been tweaked slightly. Cape Town-based food blogger, Kamini Pather was proclaimed the winner of MasterChef South Africa 2013 during the season finale broadcast by M-Net on 11 September, 2013. Keep the MasterChef SA title in the Cape and enter now.

The art exhibition entitled ‘FUSION II’, meaning working together to create something new, is what three friends with a diverse but complimentary artistic history, have decided to do. The exhibition features Sue Akerman, Gill Gerhardt and Bruce Attwood. The three notable artists from the Pietermaritzburg area initially debuted at the Tatham Gallery in Kwa-Zulu Natal to great critical acclaim and much audience enjoyment. Each of these three artists brings a unique area of expertise to this collaboration. Attwood is primary a woodturner and printmaker, with a remarkable capacity for inventive engineering and attention to detail. Akerman is known for her delicate fibre art pieces and Gerhardt for her use of surface decoration in glass etching, blasting and in the medium of printmaking. The result is a number of outrageously different furniture pieces. The three artists decided on the spur of the moment, not only to collaborate in a group project, but to exhibit within a year. They would brainstorm, with Bruce beginning the skeleton of the design and handing it back to Sue or Gill. Some pieces travelled backwards and forwards between the three artists several times before they were declared ‘finished’. The final pieces are playful and complex, with each requiring individual attention from its viewers. This exhibition can be seen from 2 until 27 February 2014 at IS ART at Le Quartier François, Franschhoek.

RUGBY THAT ROCKS IS BACK Back your Boytjies!

The 2014 Varsity Rugby season kicksoff in grand style at De Zalze Golf Club on Monday, 3 February with the FNB Varsity Cup moving into its seventh year of existence with some exciting innovations planned for this year. The Varsity Cup will lend itself to further refereeing experimentation and is set to employ two referees in each of its fixtures. The referees will operate in tandem during the match, with both able to roam the field in order to police the offside line, the breakdown, and forward passes. The organisers have again opened the competition to experimentation with specially designed jerseys for props (in the Varsity Cup and Shield). In another innovation a new “Free Catch Rule” will come into play, adding to the free-flowing style of rugby employed in the various tournaments. A player can now mark the ball - when catching a kick on the full - anywhere on the field and not just in his own 22. The referees, however, will play advantage with any catch from the air and will be able to bring the catcher’s team back if

they do not get advantage and award a free-kick to them.
