“Up and Coming News from Nancy Cartwright”

Just From Nancy… Is it just me? Or are there other people out there who can't believe June is almost over?!? Normally, we would have been in full swing on The Simpsons since March, but like so many other things in this town, the writers’ strike pushed back our timetable this year. Have no fear - the contracts were all worked out and we are going at rocket speed now doing double-time to play catch-up on all the episodes so that everything gets done and to your local Fox station on time. The writer's strike affected a lot of people in this town, and I wouldn't wish another lapse of work like that on anyone but there is always a bright side! For the first time in I don't know how long, I got to take an actual vacation. I travel a lot, but it usually tends to involve work - a lecture, an appearance and a quick flight back to make the next recording - and this time I got to take a bona-fide hiatus just for me. Man, I loved it! Don't get me wrong - there were still university lectures to do, recording for The Replacements, ADR (additional dialogue recording to picture) for The Simpsons, but I am so fortunate to have a job where I can go to a studio, no matter where in the world I am and, when necessary, quite literally phone it in. How cool is that? This has also given me some time to see family (my folks live back in Ohio, and my siblings range from Oregon to Florida), spend "spring break" with my son Jack, and just get some personal R&R time with my sweetie. Now that the contracts are settled, it's back to business and trying to juggle it all like a circus performer, but in the meantime - I may have learned how to take some "me" time, and all I can say is Whoo Hoo! Love, Nancy

Happy House Illustrates The Way to Happiness® Nancy’s non-profit Happy House, dedicated to building better families, has embarked on its biggest project yet. Happy House Co-Executive Director Carol Loweree has begun delivering workshops to local children using an illustrated version of The Way to Happiness, A Common Sense Guide to Better Living®. This illustrated version, developed by long time Happy House supporter and filmmaker Tim Melchior, keeps the core concepts of the original book, but presents them in a simplified and “kid friendly” way. Using a lesson plan she developed specifically for use with the illustrated booklet, Carol introduces children to various common sense morals such as “Do Not Steal” and “Be Worthy of Trust”. “One for one, these kids really enjoy getting this information,” Carol says, “and the lesson plan gives them practical applications and lots and lots of ways to use these concepts in real life.” Nancy is over the moon about this project and feels that these workshops are a vital tool to help children and the whole family unit. If you would like to participate in the project or for more information, please contact Adam@happyhouse.org or call 818-882-7483. Carol Loweree, founder of FITE*, is a teacher who has dedicated her life to educating and helping children. She oversees the delivery of all workshops, seminars and other outreach programs for Happy House. *FITE, a DBA of Happy House, is an acronym for Family Improvement Through Education, which specializes in literacy programs and teaching The Way to Happiness. ®

Cartwright Breaks Ground on Youth Center 3 LA City Councilman Greig Smith was honored and surprised when the renderings for the new Devonshire PALS Youth Center were unveiled bearing his name. The Center will be known as the COUNCILMAN GREIG SMITH LAPD DEVONSHIRE AREA YOUTH CENTER to honor his incredible tenacity and diligence which helped the project to succeed. The new Center will have a gym, park environment, tutoring facilities along with a computer lab, and administrative services for those in jeopardy. There will be 52 security cameras surrounding the building and property to ensure the safety of its participants. If you ever doubted our effectiveness in the community, you should have been at the June 5th ground breaking for the new PALS Youth Center that we have all worked hard to create and fund. It was nothing short of awesome. The stories of survival, largely due to the efforts of the amazing police officers and counselors at Devonshire PALS, were inspirational and just make us all want to do more. As Nancy put it, “We’ve got a great group of dedicated people here and we’ll just keep going.” The current Center, albeit in one room until the new Center is completed, is handling 2530 kids a day and sending 50 more to camp. There is a waiting list of 700!!! The new Center has been four years in planning and is about to be built on the corner of Parthenia St. and Wilbur Ave. in Northridge. This site is due to the generosity of the Department of Water and Power which agreed to lease the property to Devonshire PALS for 28 years – at $1 per year!! Thank you DWP…. Construction is expected to begin immediately with a proposed completion in 2009. The September 20th Monte Carlo night, which Nancy hosts, and the July 14th PALS Golf tournament, in which Nancy will play, will be raising funds for the tools needed in the new facility, including sports equipment, books, computers, and much more. For information on attending either event or to donate, visit www.devonshire-pals.org.

Simpsons Set to Tie Record What do you do with a show that never gets old? You bring it back for a twentieth time. The Simpsons just finalized contracts and it’s official - America’s favorite yellow family will be back for its 20th season. This is a mark that will tie the show with Gunsmoke for the longest running prime-time series ever. After all, with the tremendous domestic and international success of The Simpsons Movie, it was inevitable that the eternal ten-year-old and his family would be back for another year of hilarity. So, stay tuned for another exciting season of The Simpsons.

Stars Under the Stars We’re very excited about the third annual Monte Carlo night, which takes place this year on Saturday, September 20th. We’ve got a great team and an amazing group of poker pros and celebrities who have already agreed to lend their support. Those who have attended or contributed have been instrumental in allowing Devonshire PALS to break ground on their new Youth Center earlier this month. And now the equipment and programs will be financed partially by the money we raise at this year’s event and at the PALS Golf Tournament which takes place on July 14th. For information on that, please visit www.devonshire-pals.org. In addition to Nancy serving as hostess once again, and supplying her terrific “Home in the Valley” for the exciting evening’s events, World Series of Poker Champion Jamie Gold returns and this year is Chairman of the Poker Committee. We anticipate that many of his poker pro friends will be coming to play including Jennifer Harman, Men “The Master” Nguyen, Marco Traniello, Todd Brunson, Sammy Farha, Karen James, Kristi Gazes, and 2006 WSOP Ladies Event Champion Mary Jones, who will conduct a Poker Boot Camp.

Ghost Whisperer co-star Camryn Manheim with 2006 World Series of Poker Main Event Champion and this year’s Poker Committee Chairperson Jamie Gold

The star-studded Hosting Committee includes such outstanding people as Brad Garrett, Camryn Manheim, Sinbad, Tom Kenny, Kirstie Alley, Mickey Dolenz, and many more. Dorian Harewood will return to teach and host Black Jack. The food was a big hit and will be even better this year! And what’s a party without an open bar? So eat, drink, play poker, blackjack, roulette and more, and simply have a blast! $500 will buy you the party AND buy-in for Texas Hold ‘Em – the top five players get seats to a World Series of Poker Tournament. If you don’t play, come with your friends and simply party and have a terrific night for $250. Bring your checkbooks so you can have a chance to buy raffle tickets for amazing prizes and oneof-a-kind experiences, and to participate in the silent and live auctions. If you can’t make it in person, we just might have an item or two available online for you to bid on. Remember, this is all going to the building of a new Youth Center that will help get local kids off the streets and in to more productive activities. Be a part of something special and have a great time doing it. Join us this year!
