News from Nancy Cartwright

Just From Nancy… Wow—a whole ‘nother year has come and gone and I am more excited than ever about the future! I could tell you all about how I am on the 2nd draft of my screenplay In Search of Fellini, and I could tell you how I am also pitching a new animated television series—the first of its kind, and I could tell you how incredible it was being at the final taping of The Simpsons, Season 24 and how everyone was so fun and funny and grateful, and I could tell you how my Happy House Good Choices® program is getting lots and LOTS of participation in San Jose from the community groups, businesses and the ever-so-committed city government, how the crime stats in the area have gone steadily down for 4 years, and how the kids are finding that making good choices in life is FUN!…but I wouldn’t want to bore you! LOL! What I am going to tell you is that I have THE MOST AMAZING STAFF on the whole planet! They have a combined total of 66 years of dedication to my production company and non-profit. Peter, Janelle, Courtney, Garrett, Jack, Erin, Bobbi, Marty, Monica and Kathie are loyal, consistent and always looking out for the best, not only for me, but for others too. I can’t tell you now many times business associates have complimented me on my staff and how amazing they are! And that is a tremendous gift because it is unsolicited. You can’t beat that! I love our end-of-year party because I get to embarrass them personally by telling them how great they are—so this is just an extension of that! Hats off to those who service others and do it with a big smile and competency! Happy New Year one and all,

Nancy

Starting Season 25!

The prospect of our favorite “Springfield Five” living on for all time passed yet another milestone in 2012: The longest running scripted show in television history! And so The Simpsons heads into Season #25! A quarter of a century! Hey, even sea turtles and sequoia trees are starting to see staying power. Congratulations to the writers, actors, directors, producers, executives, animators, designers, advertisers, mixers and a myriad of others who bring us this 22 minutes of awesomeness. Cheers to 25 and beyond! Yes, go ahead, have a cow, man!

Cartwright Entertainment Gets Creative CE is putting together some great projects in 2013. We’re moving forward with a group of professionals toward completion of a screenplay which we’re very excited about turning into a major motion picture. Meanwhile, pitches are underway to television broadcasters on a prime time animated series that will explore the universal situations of family, friendship and how everything old is new again. Look for the latest on these and other projects at www.cartwrightentertainment.com. (And that’s new too!)

Happy House Spreads It’s Wings 2012 was a year of good expansion for Happy House and the Good Choices Program. There were many exciting new opportunities and increases in delivery of existing venues. Topping our highlights for 2012, our San Jose Community United Chapter continued to grow rapidly, adding many new partners and expanding after-school and field trip services as well as winning awards for achievement. Community United was also instrumental in opening our new Salinas group which delivered the How to Make Good Choices program in a facility partnership with the Community Housing Improvement Systems & Planning Association, Inc.— the largest private, non-profit housing developer in Monterey County. The kids completed the program with rave results. Happy House Founder, Nancy Cartwright, was honored with the Lifetime Happiness Award at The Way to Happiness International annual convention in Glendale, California for her service and support for the organization. San Jose Community United was also honored for their service and commitment with the Outstanding Love and Help Children Award 2012. This was a year of great expansion and we thank all the volunteers, supporters, parents and children for their participation in this program which helps us all live happier and more productive lives. Another successful group, which operates after-school programs at the Santa Barbara Boys & Girls Club, continued to deliver all year long and now trains teens to deliver the program to younger kids, promising a broader reach to even more youth in 2013. The Seattle Kids Club Chapter did numerous GC training activities and public handouts of The Way to Happiness booklets delighting people with their youthful enthusiasm and planting yet more trees for a healthy and evergreen Northwest! Our Columbus Good Choices Mentor, Monique Williams, at Linden Recreation Center had amazing graduates of the GC Program, including a remarkable 11-year-old preacher who is passing the precepts forward at his church’s Sunday services! Happy House sponsored and delivered several arts and crafts fairs, including one for the Los Angeles Anti-Gang Coalition and another for the Love Corner, Bishop Harris’ new Good Choices group in Watts. Happy House provided resource booths at these events as well, giving the gift of How to Make Good Choices and The Way to Happiness to thousands.

Happy House Community United San Jose—Providing a Brighter Future for Youth in San Jose It’s difficult to know where to begin when looking at all the good things that have been accomplished by the Community United San Jose Chapter of Happy House. At the heart of their success is The Good Choices Program being delivered to youth who live in areas that are deemed “hot spots” of crime, drugs and gang activity. The Good Choices Program not only helps youth make better choices, but it helps the staff communicate with the youth through the common language used in the How to Make Good Choices booklet. Disciplinary problems are much easier to handle when the kids can look at their own actions as a “good” or “bad” choice that influences the happiness and survival potential for themselves and others. Due to the success of this program, the City of San Jose has awarded the Mayor’s Safe Summer Initiative Grant to Community United for the past 4 years. This grant helps keep The Good Choices Program running during the summer months, thereby keeping at-risk youth off the streets and involved in activities that create a positive influence in their neighborhoods. In partnership with the City of San Jose, Community United operates two youth centers year round, Starbird and Alma. At these centers, at-risk youth from the neighborhood get the opportunity to engage in empowering activities such as homework tutoring, computer training, arts and crafts projects, sports, dance, music/media projects and more. This past year, Community United partnered with the pro soccer team, the San Jose Earthquakes, who came to the Starbird Youth Center to practice with the kids and help them with their homework. But if that wasn’t enough, the Quakes funded a make-over on the “homework room” at the center, with new furnishings and decorations, top-of-the-line computer and new supplies for the kids to study and learn. They even joined in on the re-painting!

The Soccer Silicon Valley Community Foundation, in collaboration with the Earthquakes, provided the youth with tickets to ALL Earthquakes home games, which of course, they attended in full style, including tailgate parties and actual training sessions with Quake supporter/mentors! The Adobe Youth Voices/1st Act Silicon Valley provided stateof-the-art multimedia equipment and software to Community United by installing media stations where the youth now can learn music, sound and video production—something not otherwise available to them. Now they can discover and demonstrate their potential for digital arts and media. Other opportunities were made available to the kids, as follows:

Touring Trader Joe’s

• Junior Rangers Program in partnership with Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation • All those who completed The Good Choices Program were treated to a full day at Great America® theme park • An essay contest, sponsored by Xactly® Corporation with Specialized® Bikes, was held amongst the youth, wherein they wrote what they learned from The Good Choices Program and described how they used it in their lives. Seven winners were awarded brand new Specialized Bicycles at a special event and the results can be seen on Xactly’s Facebook page in all its splendor!

At the San Jose Fire Department

• Alma youth worked together and created a giant greeting card (4’ x 8’) and entered it into the 2012 Fantasy of Lights Giant Greeting Card Contest. Their creation was on display at Vasona Park, Los Gatos for a month. Their card won FIRST PLACE in all four categories! They were awarded a day trip to Santa Cruz Beach & Boardwalk for 40 kids!!! • Community United participated in many community events, giving out How to Make Good Choices booklets to hundreds of kids and their families: Festival in the Park, National Night Out, Take Flight for Kids and Day on the Bay • CU San Jose hosted and prepared a delicious Thanksgiving dinner at both centers for the youth and their families

At camp with the Department of Parks and Recreation

• Towards the end of December, CU San Jose hosted and prepared a delicious holiday meal for these families. In partnership with Family Giving Tree, they provided toys, games and other gifts to the kids. Even Santa Claus showed up to help distribute the presents! The Elks Lodge, located down the street from the Alma Youth Center, recognized the good works being done in the neighborhood and decided to hold a fund raiser to help support Community United’s programs. Community United’s Second Annual Golf Tournament Fund raiser was held in August which was a total success. Over 100 players came out to Golf for the Cause which exceeded last year’s attendance by 60%! Trader Joe’s and Second Harvest Food Bank provided food weekly to the youth centers. Community United San Jose is looking forward to another amazing year of expansion providing opportunities to at-risk youth and creating a “Good Choices Generation.” See their new 2012 website: www.communityunitedsj.org.

Dr. Cartwright—The Documentary! On June 9th, 2012, Ohio University President, Rod McDavis, introduced Nancy to 14,000 undergrads, their families and the dedicated Ohio University faculty to deliver the class of 2012’s commencement speech. She spoke to the students, interlaced with delightful voices from her many hit shows, about what choices in life will lead to success: • Do what you love • Surround yourself with people who believe in you and your dreams • Hitch your wagon to a winner • Trust your instincts • Decide exactly what you want to do. These messages resonated with a young audience and the OU Communications Department had wisely decided to capture this weekend and the story behind Nancy’s story. Now others can have a deeper understanding of what lead to her success and how this native of Ohio came to the podium as a valued extension of what makes Ohio University and the state so great. The Nancy Cartwright: The Voice of Success documentary will be available in April of 2013 at www.ohio.edu and also at www.CartwrightEntertainment.com.
