NAIDOC Week in Moorabool By Lachlan Ellis
Are you the right fit? Looking for a challenging and rewarding job? Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) may just have the job for you as they are looking for people in the Grampians region to help protect Victorian communities for the upcoming bushfire season and to assist with land management activities, to join its team. FFMVic’s Deputy Chief Fire Officer Tony English said applications are now open for approximately 45 project firefighters (PFF) to work in a number of locations across the Grampians region. “These fixed term positions are a fantastic opportunity for people from all walks of life who are physically fit to get out in the bush, protect Victoria from bushfires and help to maintain public land right across the state,” Mr English said. “You could be operating heavy machinery one week and responding to an emergency the next. “The roles involve being on the frontline fighting bushfires, conducting planned burns, managing roadside vegetation, pest and weed control, maintaining access to fire trails and roads, and supporting other emergency work to help protect the community and environment.” The range of PFF roles available include general firefighters, fire support officers and rappel crew. “Successful recruits will be fully trained and get the opportunity to work with experienced staff from a range of fire management agencies right across the state, and potentially nationally and internationally if required.” Applications are now open and close on 31 July, to apply visit jobs.careers.vic.gov.au/pff or call 136 186.
Moorabool has come together to commemorate NAIDOC Week and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, with a number of workshops and other events held from 3 to 10 July. This year’s theme for NAIDOC Week was ‘Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!’, a reminder to all Australians to continue working towards institutional, structural, collaborative, and cooperative reforms, for equity and justice for First Nations peoples. NAIDOC Week activities coincided with school holidays this year, providing a great opportunity for families and children across Moorabool to get involved. In the lead-up to NAIDOC Week, local Wadawurrung man Barry Gilson performed a Welcome to Country in Gordon on Saturday 2 July, followed by a projection of Aboriginal artist Aunty Marlene Gilson’s art on the Gordon Hall. The Bacchus Marsh RSL was also lit up with projections commemorating First Nations peoples, and a NAIDOC display was held in the Artists Alcove in Ballan. Woven raffia bracelet making workshops at Ballan Library (Monday 4 July) and Lerderderg Library (Thursday 7 July) proved particularly popular with kids, guided by proud Dakinjung artist and weaver, Michelle Napanangka Earl. Finally, a NAIDOC Storytime and BacchChat session with Gunditjmara musician and educator Jayden Lillyst were held at Lerderderg Library on Saturday 9 July. Moorabool Shire Mayor Cr Tom Sullivan said it was important that First Nations peoples are celebrated every week of the year, not just NAIDOC Week. “Moorabool came together to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples with a calendar of events for NAIDOC Week 2022. Thanks to everyone who joined us at one of Council’s events to learn more about our local First Nations communities. It was great to see so many families and children getting involved during the school holidays,” Cr Sullivan said. “Aunty Marlene Gilson’s art projections on the Gordon

Woven Raffia bracelet making. Hall were a particular highlight, with over 40 local residents in attendance. Barry James Gilson, a Wadawurrung man, singer, poet, and storyteller gave a memorable Welcome to Country to open the event. “Together we will continue to acknowledge and celebrate our First Nations communities not just in NAIDOC Week, but every week of the year.” NAIDOC Week is held annually during the first week of July.
