STEMM women unite for climate

100 women with STEMM backgrounds from around the world, came together in a trip to Antarctica last November, all with a goal of making the world a better place. PHOTO: SUBMITTED By Lachlan Ellis

One hundred female scientists from around the world – including two Moorabool residents – returned from a trip aboard ‘The Island Sky’ in November, which took them on an Antarctic expedition. Bioinformatician Marina Alexander, who lives just north of Ballan, and venture analyst Dominique Wisniewski from Bacchus Marsh, were two of the 100 women with a background in STEMM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine) who took part in the latest Homeward Bound trip, voyaging for three weeks. Despite the seasickness that comes with being on a ship taking on swells of up to eight metres, Dr Alexander said she’d do it all again, without a doubt.

“We’re looking to do more sustainable type work, and the trip I went on with the Homeward Bound cohort has developed a lot of collaborations and networks for improving the sustainability of our technology and how we develop it,” she told the Moorabool News. “We had to go from Argentina, which was the closest access to the peninsula, where you can see the most wildlife. It’s challenging to go from Australia because you end up with a lot of thick ice. Flying over there took a couple of days, we then spent three days developing our values and working out a way we could all live comfortably on the ship for three weeks. We were on the ship for 21 days… we crossed the Drake Passage, which is a really high wind, high swell area.”

First setting sail in 2016, Homeward Bound is a global initiative supporting women and non-binary people from diverse cultures with a background in STEMM, who all have the goal of making the world a better place, with a more sustainable future. Some of Dr Alexander’s fellow passengers on The Island Sky included Slovakian Michaela Musilova, an analogue astronaut who measures the effect of extreme environments on humans, and Jordanian Maya Beano, who works to make pharmaceutical goods cheaper and more accessible for countries in North Africa. Dr Alexander said that taking in the majesty of Antarctica was a humbling experience.

Cover story continued... “Bathing in the natural beauty of Antarctica made us acutely aware that the earth is our only home, and we need to take dramatic and immediate action to preserve it for human habitation,” she said. “That 1100 known species, lichens, moss, elephant seals and purposing penguins can collaborate so well is awe-inspiring. It’s also our planet’s air conditioner. The ice reflects the sun’s energy back into space and seasonal changes drive ocean oxygen, nutrients and energy feeding our marine life and driving weather patterns around

the globe. The cold water also acts as a carbon sink.” Seeing the continent firsthand made learning about the impacts of global warming on Antarctica difficult – scientists at America’s Palmer Station base told the Homeward Bound women that krill has dropped there since the 1970s, impacting whales, seals, penguins, seabirds, and fish. A so-called “calving” of the glaciers was also witnessed during one of the group’s landings, with Dr Alexander telling the Moorabool News about hearing “the thunder of the ice falling above the chattering penguins”.

Dr Alexander thanked locals for helping make the trip possible, as well as the fulltime staff at Homeward Bound who work through the year to ensure everyone gets there on time. “I couldn’t have made it to Antarctica without the generous support of the Moorabool, Ballarat and Hepburn communities. We hosted a successful Harvest Festival on our property Bolwarrah Gar-

dens just north of Ballan and look forward to hosting more fundraising events into the future,” she said. As for her future endeavours in science, Dr Alexander says she is hoping to mentor a younger scientist who is “passionate about preventing the spread of avian flu through fur seals in the sub-Antarctic regions such as Tasmania, the Falklands, and South Georgia Island”.

Recreation centre welcomes community

Moorabool Shire Council is welcoming residents to visit a newly-completed stadium this weekend, with activities on for both adults and kids. Community members are invited to take part in a Community Open Day celebration at the $17 million Moorabool Aquatic Recreation Centre (MARC) indoor stadium in Maddingley, the biggest facility of its kind in the shire. Attendees can expect an array of free activities including adult and child-friendly Strength and Stretch classes, children’s disco and various ball sport demon-

strations. A sausage sizzle will be provided with a gold coin donation to the Belgravia Foundation, which aims to reduce participation barriers in sport and recreation. Moorabool Shire Mayor Cr Ally Munari said it was fantastic to be able to welcome Moorabool residents to see and enjoy the new facility. “We are thrilled to open the doors of the MARC stadium to the community and showcase the state-of-the-art facilities; it’s not just a stadium, but a hub for fitness, fun and community en-

gagement,” she said. Council has a three-year partnership with stadium operators, Belgravia Leisure, which will be responsible for the dayto-day operations of the centre’s four indoor highball courts, two multi-program spaces and function room with kitchenette. The community open day will be held on Saturday 20 January from 10am–1pm at the stadium located at 23A Taverner Street, Bacchus Marsh – right near Maddingley Park. For more information on the MARC stadium, please visit marcmoorabool.com.au.

ban area now has almost 25,000 residents according to the 2021 census, and will certainly have many more particularly with the strong growth in Maddingley. Ms Tudball says backing MooraPool’s campaign is simple. “It’s as easy as jumping on and signing the petition, and just getting behind our social media. We’ve got a Facebook page and an Instagram page, where you’ll hear updates about the campaign and the community group. We have links to the petition there too,” she said.

“We’re still sort of finalising the ins and outs, but we’re hoping to get on the land where the pool is proposed to perhaps have a barbeque or something, to formally announce the group and the petition, so hopefully we can get some people down there and some media across what we’re asking for as well.” The group is also planning to meet up this Saturday, on the back of the opening of the MARC indoor stadium from 10am to 1pm.

Our time for a pool By Lachlan Ellis

A new community-led group has been formed to spearhead the campaign for a new pool, and is calling on locals from all walks of life to get on-board. ‘MooraPool’ is made up of community members from many different backgrounds, but they have one thing in common – their desire for an indoor pool in Bacchus Marsh. $15 million has already been committed from Moorabool Shire Council for the project, and $10 million has been committed from the State Government – MooraPool are urging the Federal Government to come to the table and provide the final $15 million to get the project fully funded. Lauren Tudball is spokesperson for MooraPool, and says Bacchus Marsh needs a pool that is accessible for all residents, at any time of the year. “We’re looking to really put some pressure on the government I suppose, to provide the rest of the funding to get the pool up and running. There’s a petition that’s been put together that’s up online, and we’re asking for the local community to sign that, as well as send letters to the government. We’re also getting community groups like schools, gyms, and the CFA to get behind the campaign as well,” Ms Tudball told the Moorabool News. “I’m in my 30s, and it’s something that’s been rattled around for all my life. It’s something that’s really missing from the town – we have the outdoor pool, but that only functions during certain parts of the year and certain temperatures. “An indoor pool would accommodate for lots of different people, from kids learning to swim, teenagers and adults looking to compete and train at an Olympic-sized pool, elderly and rehab areas, as well as the disabled community. We don’t have that in our general vicinity…Melton Waves is down the road, but that isn’t accessible to all the groups we’re looking at.” The current pool in Bacchus Marsh opened in 1938, when the town’s population was around 3,500, whereas the ur-

Unwise decisions over summer break Victoria Police has detected more than 19,000 traffic offences during an 18-day road safety operation over the Christmas and New Year period. Operation Roadwise, which ran from 12:01am on Friday 15 December 2023 to 11:59pm on Monday 1 January 2024, saw police highly visible on major arterial roads and highways across Victoria in an effort to reduce road trauma. There was a major focus on impaired driving, with police conducting 310,146 preliminary breath tests and 8,944 roadside drug tests during the operation. Police detected 668 drink driving offences – a strike rate of one in every 464 drivers caught over the limit, while a further 535 drug driving offences were detected. More than a third of offences detected related to speeding, with 5,854 motorists caught speeding between 10km/h and 25km/h over the speed limit – resulting in a $385 fine and three demerit points. Over 900 motorists were caught using a mobile phone or device while driving, which attracts a $577 and four demerit points. There were also 374 seatbelt offences detected, which is also a $385 fine and three demerit points. The total 19,386 traffic offences detected during Operation Roadwise includes: • 7,631 speeding offences (5,854 for between 10km/h and 25km/h over speed limit) • 704 unlicensed drivers • 644 disqualified/suspended drivers • 921 mobile phone offences • 828 disobey signs/signals • 374 seatbelt offences • 668 drink driving offences from 310,146 preliminary breath tests • 535 drug driving offences from 8,944 roadside drug tests • 438 vehicle impoundments • 1,728 unregistered vehicles There were 16 lives lost on Victorian roads between 15 December 2023 and 1 January 2024, with a total of 296 lives

lost in 2023, the highest number of annual fatalities in 15 years since 2008. With many Victorians expected to take extended holidays over the January period, police are warning motorists not to be complacent on the roads in the New Year. “While the majority of road users have acted responsibly over the Christmas and New Year period, the fact we’ve detected over 19,000 offences in 18 days remains totally unacceptable,” Road Policing Assistant Commissioner Glenn Weir said. “We’ve seen people making deliberate and conscious decisions that significantly increases the likelihood of road trauma, putting themselves and other road users at risk. “We will continue to have a major focus on impaired drivers in 2024, so expect to be tested and face the conse-

quences when you’re caught – we make no apologies for this.” Police will continue to have a major presence across Victoria’s road network, with a particular focus on busy holiday hotspots around the coast and throughout regional Victoria. Motorists are being warned to be patient and allow extra travel time, as well as maintaining a safe braking distance and being cautious when overtaking, particularly around vehicles towing caravans and heavy vehicles. Police will also continue to conduct random alcohol and drug testing operations throughout January. Oldest bike race conquered By Lachlan Ellis

A local cyclist has claimed Australia’s oldest cycling title, narrowly beating two rivals off scratch. Bacchus Marsh’s Graeme Frislie won the 126th Austral Wheelrace at Darebin International Sports Centre Velodrome last month, at a record time to boot, clocking in at 1:55.03, three seconds faster than Kellan O’Brien’s win the year before. But despite crossing the line in record time, Mr Frislie said it was a close race, with both O’Brien and Liam Walsh close behind him as he put on the jets. “It was pretty cool. I’ve been watching that race for years now, so even to race in it was amazing. To win it

was super special,” Mr Frislie told the Moorabool News. “It was pretty close, it was full gas the whole way, and I didn’t know until I crossed the line that I’d won it. It’s been years and years that I’ve put into the sport, so this win was a combination of all that really.” The weekend also saw Frislie claim gold at the Elite Men’s National Championship Omnium, and silver in the Madison. Around this time last year he won the National U23 Championships Criterium for the second consecutive year, but he says there’s no secret to his success. And his success, of course, is fuelling his ultimate ambition.

“There’s not really any secret, just keep your head down and work hard. The Christmas period was still pretty full-on for me, I had Christmas day off which was nice, then I flew down to Tassie on Boxing Day and raced through the Christmas Carnivals through until New Years, and straight up to Ballarat basically for Road Nats, and just got to Adelaide last Wednesday, so yeah, no rest,” Mr Frislie said. “The Paris Olympics are definitely a big goal for me. The next race we’ve got coming up is the Nations Cup in Adelaide, so that’ll be a big selection event. I’m looking forward to that.”

Driving community support Alleged murder

Peter Douglas (fourth from the left) presented donations from the Marsh Rodders to Jackie from The Neighbour’s Place, Ian from the CFA, Jenny from Soul Food, and Peter from the SES, just before Christmas. PHOTO: SUBMITTED By Lachlan Ellis

The donations from a local car event have been tallied, and the organising club’s president says he is beyond proud of the club, and the community, for getting behind some very worthy causes. The Marsh Rodders hot rod and custom car club ran its Show ‘N’ Shine &

Swap Meet last October, and part of the proceeds were presented to local community groups and charities by the club’s President Peter Douglas just before Christmas. Mr Douglas thanked the car community and enthusiasts from across the state for heading down to Maddingley Park, and in turn, supporting these amazing groups.

“We donated $2,500 to Soul Food, $2,500 to The Neighbours’ Place, $1,000 to the local SES, $1,000 to the local CFA, and $1,000 to MooraPool. It’s fantastic to be able to contribute in this way, it just shows the support from the community who come and see our show,” he told the Moorabool News. “It’s how it should work, swings and roundabouts, you know? It was a good effort, it feels good as a local not-for-profit club, being able to give back to the community.” The aim of the annual Show ‘N’ Shine & Swap Meet is to donate back to community groups depending on attendance, with a great turnout and over 500 cars on show at the 2023 event allowing this fantastic fundraising to occur. “I’d like to give a shout out to [then] Mayor Cr Rod Ward, Councillors Moira Berry and Paul Tatchell, local Member for Eureka Michaela Settle, all the Marsh Rodders club members for putting in on the day, and all their partners and kids for giving a hand as well.” Mr Douglas added. The next Show ‘N’ Shine & Swap Meet is planned to run on 20 October, and Mr Douglas says it’ll be the biggest show yet – so make sure to keep an eye on the Marsh Rodders Facebook page for information.

Homicide Squad detectives have charged a man following the death of a man in Maddingley. Police were first called to a Stonehill Drive address to assist Ambulance Victoria following reports a man had been injured, about 7.40pm on Thursday 11 January. A 61-year-old man was airlifted to hospital where he later died. Another person at the home, a 35-year-old Maddingley man, was subsequently arrested. He was charged with murder on Sunday. The man was remanded to appear in Melbourne Magistrates Court on the morning of Monday 15 January. The parties involved are known to each other. Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Call for road repairs By Lachlan Ellis

Locals are calling on VicRoads to take action on a nearby route, with concerns the road’s state could lead to a serious accident. Geelong-Ballan Road is one of many roads in the region that draw the ire of locals for their potholes and rough surfaces, and many people who use the road, including Simone Laurie from Beremboke, feel something needs to be done before it’s too late. “It’s atrocious. I can’t even drive my car on it. I’ve got a car that’s low, and if I hit a pothole, it’ll just break my rims. Year after year they rip up the road for no reason at all, and replace bits of road that don’t need replacing. And now, since COVID, they’ve done nothing on those roads,” Ms Laurie told the Moorabool News. “Just past the cemetery Geelong-bound, it’s got a million and one patchy holes in it. When you’re driving that way, you have to dodge the potholes and go over double lines all the time. If you drive all the way up to the Beremboke turnoff, there’s some massive dips, where they’ve just got signs warning people. In the dark people can’t see them, and hit those dips.” Ms Laurie said her concerns had been sent to VicRoads, but she’d never received a response. “I do it over the internet all the time, and it just gets Simone Laurie, and many other local road users, are concerned about the state of Geelong-Ballan Road. Liquor theft proves costly

By Lachlan Ellis

Stealing from a local bottle shop has cost a thief the price of two top shelf bottles, after he entered a guilty plea to the offence. Luke Mark appeared before the Bacchus Marsh Magistrates Court on Friday 22 December, admitting to a theft in Bacchus Marsh last year. “On 10 October 10.46 am, the accused attended the Railway Liquor bottle shop in Bacchus Marsh. He obtained a can of alcohol containing soda and lime valued at $7.50, and then departed from the store making no attempt to pay. On 26 October he attended 7-11 in Bacchus Marsh, walked towards the exit, and obtained two packs of Red Rock potato chips valued at $5, making no attempt to pay,” Leading Senior Constable Kerrie Moroney told the court. “On 27 October, police attended the accused’s address, and he was arrested. He made full admissions and stated the reason for the offending was due to having no money, but he wanted the alcohol, and he wanted the potato chips.” “You’ve entered a plea, and I accept the circumstances of the offending…but, you’re going to have to be careful going forward. If you continue to commit further indictable offences such as theft from a shop, ultimately you’ll get a term of imprisonment,” Magistrate Hugh Radford said. Mr Mark was issued a $200 fine with conviction. Whether you’re a seasoned hay grower or getting into it more recently, it’s important to take care of your hay and crops this fire season. If you notice any of the signs below, your hay may be heating up: • Steam rising from haystacks. • Condensation or corrosion under hayshed roofing. • Mould growth in or on bales. • Unusual odours like a burning, musty, or caramel smell. Sometimes you may detect a smell like pipe tobacco. • Slumping in sections of the haystack. Spontaneous ignition is the leading cause of haystack fire in Victoria, and

just one damp bale is enough to ignite a haystack. Some ways of reducing the risk of haystack fires include, but are not limited to, making sure hay is fully cured and at recommended moisture content before baling, not stacking hay all the way to the top of a hayshed, and preventing hay from getting wet. Visit the CFA website for more information on preventing haystack fires at www.cfa.vic.gov.au/plan-prepare/ how-to-prepare-your-property/farms/ hay-fire-safety And remember, if you see or smell smoke, you should call Triple Zero (000) immediately and ask for fire.

Dream result for Lions chasing crucial outright Courtney By Todd Whelan

David Moran returns Curly James to scale after winning the Shepparton Cup. PHOTO: TROTSVISION By Tim O’Connor (HRV)

There were tears of joy and scenes of jubilation as Curly James provided 19-year-old trainer Courtney Laker with the biggest moment of her young career last Saturday night. Laker, from Kialla, was celebrating a special hometown feature success when Curly James dived late and grabbed long-time leader Kanena Provlima to win the Neatline Homes Shepparton Gold Cup. In a race full of action, it was Laker’s six-year-old who received the run of the race behind Kanena Provlima and then reeled him in along the home straight to score in a photo. “I can’t even describe the emotions,” Laker, whose only horse is Curly James, said. “I’m so excited. The pressure and the relief and just the achievement to get Curly up to this day is just unbelievable. “To have my first horse, training my first season and to have a horse like Curly is just absolutely amazing. “I obviously can’t thank my dad, my nana and everyone that’s involved in this horse (enough). It makes my dreams come true.” It was also a special triumph for reinsman David Moran, who claimed his second Shepparton Gold Cup after winning it in 2021 with superstar pacer Lochinvar Art. “Courtney’s only a young girl doing a great job, so for her and her family to get a horse like this, it’s terrific,” he said. “They’ve put a lot of time, a lot of money into the industry and they’re great people so it’s very special.” Last weekend’s Bendigo Pacing Cup winner Max Delight made a mid-race move, but couldn’t find the spot outside the leader and was eventually pulled up out of the event. Kanena Provlima’s stablemate Petes Said So finished third, with the KerryAnn Morris-trained pair running great races during their interstate raid.

Ballan Golf Club RESULTS - W/E SUNDAY 14 JANUARY Wednesday – Stableford Winner - Chris Dunn (0) 35 points. R/up - Anthony Moore (7) 33 points on c/b from Kev Lockman (16) and Denis Conroy (14). NTPs - 12th Anthony Moore, 15th Frank Raffaele. Magpie - 14th Peter Clifford.

A seven-wicket haul from ageless Lions Captain Benny Longhurst, has put his chargers in the box seat for an all-important outright win over Buninyong ahead of Day two this Saturday. The Lions were an aggressive unit with the ball from the outset after winning the toss and sending the hosts in. Just three bowlers were used to rout the lowly Buninyong, who struggled to build partnerships despite five of their top six batsmen making it to double figures. Longhurst’s 16.1 overs yielded match-winning figures of 7/51, including four maidens as he and strike bowlers Madushanka Ekanayake (2/40) and Chamika Sattambi (1/41), played the support roles in what was essentially a ‘day out’ for the veteran leader. While the Lions finals chances remain slim, the opportunity to secure an outright win this Saturday will do the pride no harm - in fact it’s a must. Credit to the Lions top order in reply, not wasting time getting on with the chase despite their recent struggles. A mission, a chase for an outright, maybe just what the Lions were after as they comfortably overcame the hosts total just three wickets down and in good time prompting an immediate declaration. Top order trio Dilon Chandima 41 (35), Axel Morton 47 (78) and Lachie Herring 40* (69) found their groove and will be the confidence building beneficiaries moving forward. “One step at a time”, was the phrase alluded to in last week’s column and the Lions have responded well with plenty more still to play out come day two.

Buninyong were 1/9 in their second innings at stumps. No surprise it was Longhurst (1/6) again who struck, making it eight scalps for the match to date. This Saturday’s conclusion amounts for compelling viewing - the Lions season is riding on it. RESULTS – (R11 - Day 1) BCA 1st GRADE Buninyong 134 & 1/9. B. Longhurst 7/51, M. Ekanayake 2/40. RESULTS – W/E SATURDAY 13 JANUARY

First XI (BCA 2nd Grade Div 1) Ballan 178 v Burrumbeet 1-16 Week 1 of 2 Batting - Ryan Lister 40*, Mark Kennedy 34, Jack Jarvis 32, Eli Muir 18 Bowling - Hayden Micallef 6-2-1-9, Jack Jarvis 6-2-0-5 Burrumbeet won the toss and Ballan was sent into bat. Jack McGregor looked good at the top of the order before falling to a ripper catch. Good bowling and fielding from Burrumbeet made things very difficult for Ballan. The ship was settled by Mark Kennedy (34) and Jack Jarvis (32) who both batted brilliantly well to give Ballan a bit of an edge, before both fell just before the tea break. In what was probably his best innings for the club, Ryan Lister (40*) came to the crease and was absolutely fantastic with his attitude and shot selection really standing out. He stood up and contributed with key partnerships with

Dan Pascoe (14) and Eli Muir (18) who also was fantastic with the bat down the order. Some very handy runs indeed for Ballan who were eventually dismissed for 178 which was a very competitive total in what were very trying conditions. Burrumbeet had to face 13 overs to conclude the days play and it was Jack Jarvis and Hayden Micallef who didn’t give much away with the new ball. Hayden snagged a wicket late on in the day to give Ballan a lift of confidence. Burrumbeet finishing 1-16 off the 13 overs and sets up a very interesting week 2 of this game with it definitely being all in the balance. 2nd XI (BCA 5th Grade) Ballan 6/198 lost Lucas 5/199 Batting - S Grigg 79 not out, Max Burton 66 not out Bowling - A McIlwaine 8-1-1-14, C McIlwaine 5-0-1-20
