‘Twas the week before Christmas, and all through the Shire…quite a lot is happening actually, with two project unveilings, and many festive events occurring last week. The Nelson family popped into Ballan and Bacchus Marsh last week to bring some fantastic tunes, not to mention jolly old Santa visiting the Village Green, Christmas Craft workshops, carols, and more. As we get closer to Christmas and the New Year, late December is a time of both reflection on the year that was, and looking ahead to what the new year will bring. And while 2023 has had its highs and lows, Moorabool Shire Mayor Cr Ally Munari, now a month into the role, said the year had been an exciting one, and she’s optimistic about 2024 too. “It’s been a big year, with lots of things coming to fruition. We’ve had lots of openings in terms of big builds, some have had frustrating delays, but have finally gotten to the point where the communities can access those wonderful facilities,” Cr Munari told the Moorabool News. “It’s been a big-ticket year, and we’re really thankful to the State Government especially, because without them we wouldn’t have been able to have these amazing facilities for our growing community. To have these wonderful facilities in our Shire, we feel very lucky.” The year has of course brought difficulties, but Cr Munari said Council is taking that into account. “The challenges that we’re all facing in terms of cost of living pressures, has made us rethink in Council the way we use ratepayers’ money, and where we spread that money. We’re being very particular, and having robust conversations in terms of the budget moving forward,” she said. “I want the community to know that we’re mindful of spending, and tightening up Council’s belt, and making sure we’re getting the most bang for our buck when we look at building projects and where we spend money across Moorabool. “We’ve ticked so many boxes in our advocacy basket, and so I’m really excited over the next month or two to be working really hard on what that next year looks like for Moorabool.” Cr Munari concluded by wishing every Moorabool resident a safe and merry Christmas, and a happy New Year. “Enjoy your time with your family – this is probably the first Christmas [since COVID] where we feel fully back to normal, and I think we’re all ready for a rest. So I hope people enjoy some time with family and friends. Enjoy the special moments that this time brings.” she said.

Cartier World Travel

Moorabool’s leading travel agency, has relocated to 132 Inglis Street and is officially open for business.

Originating in 2013 from humble beginnings in Mt Egerton, where it operated from the attic of a family home, Cartier World Travel has evolved into one of Australia’s few agencies boasting a full license, ATEC membership, accreditation as a Sustainable Tourism Business, and CTOA membership. Notably, they are the proud recipients of the Lufthansa City Centre Agency award, marking a significant achievement as the first in Australia. What sets them apart? Every team member is passionate about travel and is proud to be a part of the Moorabool community! In the face of the unprecedented challenges that rocked the Travel and Hospitality industry during the pandemic, Cartier World Travel stood resilient. Despite a drying up of business, Cartier World Travel remained open, ensuring the continuity of service and dedicated efforts to secure refunds for all clients from suppliers. Taking their commitment a step further, they utilised company town cars to support the communities of Ballan, Bacchus Marsh, Greendale, Gordon and hamlets of Moorabool by delivering groceries, medicines,

assisting the elderly to medical appointments in Ballarat and Melbourne, and even making trips to the vet for pet care. Post-COVID, faced with the choice of closing doors or the determination to rebuild, Cartier World Travel chose the latter. With a small but dedicated team of three, they focused on what they do best—crafting amazing tailor-made holidays at competitive prices. Dave and Elsa decided to venture into the French and German Inbound Markets to strengthen Cartier World Travel’s renewed business opportunities. Fast forward to 2023, and Cartier World Travel has not only won several contracts,

including being the on-ground agent for the French Women’s Soccer Team during the World Women’s Soccer Cup, but has also welcomed back a full complement of staff. The team, including Lesley, Kate, Deb, Frauke, Salome, Carmela, Lily, Alison, Elsa, and the dedicated town car and bus drivers, Jeff, Paul, Peter, and Alfonso, have propelled Cartier to new heights. Thanks to their independence and global contacts, Cartier World Travel competes not only with faceless online platforms but also guarantees the best value for money travel options worldwide. Their intimate knowledge of locations and hidden gems ensures that every holiday booked with Cartier World Travel is memorable—something that might be missed with self-booking or through budget online agents. As 2023 draws to a close, Cartier World Travel extends heartfelt gratitude to supporters and staff. They look forward to assisting future travellers with their diverse travel needs. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas, and here’s to making 2024 the year you want it to be!

“Often in Government you’re battling to try and keep ahead of the curve, and what I love about this centre is that we’re right there, as West Maddingley is growing, we’ve been able to work with Council to provide this extraordinary facility, for all those communities that are moving into West Maddingley,” she said. “We know kindergartens are an incredibly important part of children’s lives and their learning, and this Gov-

ernment is absolutely committed through our Better Start Program to ensure kids have an opportunity to come to kinder. There is already the possibly of five hours [a week] for 3-year-old kinder, and we’re extending that by 2029 for 4-year-old kinder.” The West Maddingley Early Years and Community Hub is set to fully open for kindergarten programs and playgroups in early 2024.

A new hub catering for the growing Maddingley community was officially opened this month, with families joining the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Mayor Cr Ally Munari joined Member for Eureka Michaela Settle, and fellow Moorabool Shire Councillors Moira Berry and Tonia Dudzik, to celebrate the opening of the $9.2 million West Maddingley Early Years and Community Hub on Thursday 14 December. Supported by $3.5 million from the State Government’s Growing Suburbs Fund, and $4.6 million from the Building Blocks Grants program, the facility will offer 3 and 4-year-old kinder, maternal and child health services, spaces for playgroups, community rooms, and indoor and outdoor play spaces. Cr Munari thanked Ms Settle and the State Government for their support for the rapidly growing area, which has seen an influx of young families in recent years. “With the increasing population, early childhood sector reforms, and current infrastructure in Bacchus Marsh reaching capacity, the construction of this new facility ensures that the children, young people, and families of the Shire, have access to important early years programs,” Cr Munari said. “This will allow us to co-locate services, which will offer our community the best possible start, now and in the future. We are incredibly thankful to the State Government for the funding contributions from the Growing Suburbs Fund and the Building Blocks fund, which along with Council’s contribution, has resulted in the construction of this fantastic building.” Ms Settle said the completion of the hub was another chapter in the strong relationship between Council and the State Government.

Prepare for a pet-safe summer As the mercury continues to climb, RSPCA Victoria is calling on pet owners to ensure their furry friends keep cool, launching a new guide for a ‘Pet-Safe Summer’. Launched this month, the ‘Hot Days,

Cool Pets’ guide provides a set of simple steps to ensure your pet remains safe and happy over what’s set to be a scorching summer. A few tips include ensuring access to

fresh water at all times, providing shade and limiting outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and walking your pet during cooler parts of the day to stop their paws getting burnt. Summer brings its own set of challenges for pets, from scorching footpaths, sudden thunderstorms, to creepy crawlies and impacts on food availability. RSPCA Victoria’s Chief Veterinarian, Dr Bronwyn Oke, said there is a lot to look out for during the summer months. “One of the deadliest things for our pets over summer is being left in hot cars. It can take just minutes for your pet to die in a hot car, even with the windows cracked,” Dr Oke said. “It’s not just hot cars that can be deadly; heat stroke is another real concern for pets and can happen quickly if they don’t have access to a well-ventilated, shady area with plenty of fresh water at all times. “Other things like taking dogs for walks on hot footpaths can potentially burn and injure their paw pads – a good test is checking the temperature of the footpath with the back of your hand, chances are if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them.” Some pets are also more susceptible to skin cancers – and it’s not just heat-related issues that pet owners should look out for either. “We all know thunderstorms can make our pets feel anxious, and we can get some impressive storms over the summer months,” Dr Oke said.

“Making sure you have quiet, safe spaces ready for your pets during a storm can make a big difference.” Keeping your pets in mind when planning for potential emergency evacuation is also crucial, with weather conditions forecast to bring higher than average fire risk in western Victoria. “Planning for emergencies is such a crucial part of life in Victoria particularly during the summer months,” RSPCA Victoria’s Head of Prevention, Rebecca Cook, said. “Many people across the state already have a Fire Ready plan in place, and we’re urging everyone to make sure their pets are included too. Key steps to prepare include: • Updating your contact details on microchips* and ID tags in case you and your pet are separated, • Store photos or scans on your phone or email of important documents like registration, microchip numbers, vaccination certificates, medication directions, and your local vet. • Create an emergency kit with documents, medication, food, water, bowls, bedding, and toileting supplies. • Identify possible pet shelters, establish an emergency guardian, and share your evacuation plan with someone you trust who can evacuate your pets if you’re not home. A local primary school has been able to install a new device that could save lives, thanks to a grant from a Moorabool bank branch. St. Patrick’s Primary School Gordon recently installed a lifesaving defibrillator for use by the growing school community, as well as the wider community who may need it. The project was funded through a generous grant from the Community Bank Ballan & District which was sourced by the St. Patrick’s Primary

Parents and Friends’ Association. The school is mindful of its responsibility to be active within the wider community and be a support service for times of need, and is currently working for 24-hour access to the defibrillator by installing new accessible door lock on the school, so access for any community members is only a phone call away. At present, the defibrillator is accessible by the wider community 6.00am – 6.00pm five days a week.

Fog causes freeway chaos By Lachlan Ellis

Thick fog that blanketed much of the state led to several car accidents on the Western Freeway last week, with the road closed for over eight hours as a result. Police say that approximately 30 vehicles were involved in six collisions at around 4 pm on Monday 11 December, with the main collision Ballarat-bound near Myrniong. In a statement released last Tuesday, Victoria Police said that the cause of the collisions “appears to be due to heavy fog in the area and drivers not driving to the conditions”. “Due to the reduced visibility in the area police are urging motorists to slow down, drive to the conditions and take note of any road safety signage in the area,” the statement read. “Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a report online at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au.” An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson told the Moorabool News that paramedics “responded to several multi-vehicle incidents in Myrniong”, with the injured ranging from their 20s to their 70s. The injured were transported to a range of hospitals including Ballarat Health Services Base Hospital, St John of God Ballarat Hospital, Sunshine Hospital, Royal Melbourne Hospital, and Western Hospital Footscray. Two men involved in separate collisions were hospitalised in a critical condition. The series of crashes meant that the Western Freeway was closed in both directions, with some motorists reporting being stuck on the freeway for hours. Benjie Stark was one of the locals who got stuck in the aftermath, and said it was “the most intensive, large-scale accident I’ve ever seen”. “My son and I swerved into the emergency lane seconds after the first crash, as we moved over a red truck on the side ran into a white Pajero, we jumped out and ran down the hill as multiple crashes were heard, cars and trucks

travelling upwards of 90km/h hitting stopped vehicles. It was like watching those US shows in the snow when new cars just keep crashing into stopped ones,” Mr Stark said. “As the traffic finally built up, we could hear more crashes on the other side of the freeway. I counted 14 cars and trucks either very damaged or totalled spread over a couple hundred metres.” A spokesperson from the Department of Transport and Planning said the main accident was “at Pentland Hills Road near the exit there”. “There were some other minor collisions that also oc-

curred in other locations, but police didn’t give us specifics of those because they weren’t blocking traffic completely. But the big one that had the most vehicles involved was at Myrniong,” the spokesperson told the Moorabool News. “We were notified just after 4 pm that the freeway was going to have to be closed, and we were notified that it was reopening at 12.10 am, just over eight hours later.” According to CFA, 12 units were required from Ballan, Gordon, Myrniong, Coimadai, Bacchus Marsh, Greendale and Blackwood, with Myrniong the first on the scene after the call was made at 3.53 pm.

River health improves From content creator By Lachlan Ellis

Council has accepted a report into sediment in the Werribee River, noting that the health of the river has improved since the report was initially requested. The ‘Werribee River Turbidity – Update’ motion came before Council at its 6 December Ordinary Meeting, with the motion noting that the turbidity issue was first raised in February, before a report was presented on 7 June, with a follow-up report to be brought to Council six months later. The follow-up report notes that “Council officers have been carrying out daily inspections and weekly audits to ensure the endorsed Environmental Management Plans (EMP) have been implemented in the development sites in accordance with EPA Guidelines”, with much of the sediment in the river originating from large stockpiles adjacent to waterways in the Stonehill area in Maddingley. Specifically, findings across the last

six months identify four main sources of sediment: the removal of the Southern Rural Channel, active construction sites, new house construction, and existing sodic soils in the undeveloped land to the west of Stonehill. To manage and mitigate the issue, Council’s infrastructure team began daily checks of the development sites, weekly audits of the development sites, and fortnightly walks around the development sites. “As a result [of the checks/audits], the turbidity of the water in the Werribee River has been significantly reduced. The Infrastructure Team will continue to monitor the sediment control measures within development sites on regular bases until construction is completed.” the report states. The motion to accept the report was moved by Cr Moira Berry, seconded by Cr Rod Ward, and approved by all Councillors present. Cr Paul Tatchell was an apology at the meeting and was not present.

Dear Editor, Over summer we’ll see increased fire danger and I want to make clear my support of the Country Fire Authority. The CFA is made up of thousands of professional volunteers across our entire State. With the need for full capacity, I am very concerned about the requirements of some of our smaller sheds and stations, especially regarding the age and serviceability of their equipment. The Victorian Government has a responsibility to make sure that our firefighters are well equipped, and that their trucks and gear are fit for service. I really hope we are as ready as we can be. Everyone should be prepared and ready. Let’s work together to prevent loss of lives and minimise damage to property. I support our volunteers. Stay safe. Joe McCracken MP, Western Victoria Region

From generating social media clicks, to a place where mobile phones aren’t allowed – Blue Taylor made a surprising career change and has never looked back. For the past eight years, the former content creator and journalist has worked as a prison officer at Marngoneet Correctional Centre – a medium-security men’s prison in the Barwon South West region. “People think working in a prison is like the films and TV – locking doors and canteen fights all the time – but that’s not the reality. Our job is to be a positive role model. We help people, rehabilitate them, and ultimately make sure the local community is safe.” After a short career in the media industry, Ms Taylor wanted to try something new. “It can be difficult to imagine yourself in the role because most people will never step foot inside a prison. But after working as a content creator in Germany for three years, I wanted a change and a more stable career. “I moved back to Australia and was keen to find a role where I could give back to the local community. After searching online, I spotted the job advert for a prison officer and focused on the transferable skills in the job description. “You need to be resilient and have grit, be able to communicate and show compassion and care for others,” she said. “I completed the training and have been at Marngoneet Correctional Centre for the

past eight years. There’s no such thing as a typical day but the focus of my role is on rehabilitation and giving prisoners the skills to prepare for eventually being released. One of the strangest rewards is never actually seeing a prisoner again, because you know you’ve helped them to get their life back on track.” It’s more people like Ms Taylor that Marngoneet Correctional Centre and its neighbour – Barwon Prison – are looking for. As the Victorian Government recruits for prison officers across the state, Ms Taylor urges people to think about the skills they could bring to the role. “Just like there’s no such thing as a typical day, there’s not a typical prison officer either. Whether you’re a hairdresser, tradie or work in retail, it’s likely you’ll have relevant practical and interpersonal skills.” Ms Taylor acknowledged that working in a prison could be challenging, but she couldn’t imagine doing anything else. “This isn’t just a job, it’s a career. In the last few years I’ve progressed to Senior Prison Officer, we have a good work-life balance and a collaborative and supportive team environment. But above all, there’s no better feeling than going home at the end of the day knowing you made a difference.” Looking for something different? New prison officers are now eligible for a bonus of up to $5,000. Find out how you can be part of a team reshaping lives at: https:// www.justice.vic.gov.au/prison-careers

the values of compassion, integrity, and contribution – all traits that MP for Hawke, Sam Rae, says Mr Brown has in spades. “In his role as Assistant Principal of Bacchus Marsh Primary School, Chris Brown has gone above and beyond for his students, staff, and school community. Principal Melinda Williams described Chris as ‘the leader that is learning, not the one that has learnt’ - a fitting tribute,” Mr Rae said. “As the son of a public school teacher, I know how remarkable our teachers are. It’s always a treat to be able to acknowledge them for their hard work.”

A Moorabool teacher recognised for his service to the school community says it’s a “privilege” to be involved in education. Bacchus Marsh Primary School Assistant Principal Chris Brown received the Hawke Award this month, after seven years at the school, and 42 years working in education in total. He said it was an honour to be acknowledged with an award, for doing a job he loves. “It was certainly a privilege, you work in education and the community because you value education, you value children and their families, so I was thrilled to receive the Hawke Award in acknowledgement of contribution to the school community,” Mr Brown told the Moorabool News. “It was certainly a surprise, you don’t do these things for awards, but it was lovely to be recognised. It’s a privilege to work with children, and help them to be the best version of themselves. My focus has also been on literacy – helping children to read, write, and speak, so that they can access the world, really.” The Hawke Award was established in 2022 when the electoral district of Hawke was created, and is awarded annually to one person per participating school. A local Muay Thai student has won a state award, named the Fighter of the Year in his age group. Seventeen-year-old Jack Allen from Bacchus Marsh was awarded the Teen Male Fighter of the Year Award by Muay Thai Victoria on Sunday 10 December, after just two years of training in the sport. Mr Allen said it was a surprise to receive the award, but was happy to see his hard work pay off. “It sort of was a surprise, there’s a lot of guys who’ve been training a lot longer than me that haven’t done that sort of thing. So it felt like I’ve been accelerated a bit,” he told the Moorabool News. “After school I’m there about two to three hours a day, six Jack Allen was awarded Muay Thai Victoria’s days a week. How do I get the keys to my new property after settlement?

With settlement done electronically these days, this is a great question. Keys are usually collected from the agent after settlement. Exceptional expo a hit

An expo held by local emergency services personnel has gone off without a hitch, despite some rather dreary weather the day before. Deputy Group Officer of the Pentland Group of Brigades, Dale Salathiel, said the Emergency Services Expo at St Anne’s Winery, Myrniong on Sunday 10 December was a “roaring success with a big turnout from across the community”. “We were worried the event wasn’t going to go ahead due to the amount of rainfall the venue received the day before. We adapted and overcome, and it was a successful day. The aim of this important event was to give Moorabool residents information and resources to assist them with preparing for emergencies, response, and recovery,” Mr Salathiel told the Moorabool News. Ten Emergency Services groups and support groups attended: Country Fire Authority (CFA), Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV), Victoria Police, Crime Stoppers, Ambulance Victoria, State Emergency Service (SES), Victorian Council of Churches Emergencies Ministry (VCCEM), Moorabool Shire Council, St John’s Ambulance, and Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic).” Ballan CFA provided a demonstration with their rescue appliance on a Motor Vehicle Rescue with dummies PHOTOS: SUBMITTED trapped inside, cutting the vehicle up and rescuing them. Another display was a CFA utilised virtual reality FLAIM trainer, where members of the community utilised a fire extinguisher in and extinguished fires that may be present in the home. St John’s Ambulance provided Basic First Aid information and allowed the community to practice CPR on their mannequins. There were free giveaways including showbags that contained important information on what you can and can’t do during the Fire Danger Period, information about pets and horses during fires and emergencies and some family information on home fire safety plans, and more. For more information on what to do during the Fire Danger Period, visit www.cfa.vic.gov.au.

Slam dunk for local sport

Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor, I would like to make comments on the full page advertisement, “An open letter to Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan”, posted by various environment, land care, other flora and fauna loving organisations and individuals in your edition (M/News 21 Nov). I too am a lover of flora and fauna and have enjoyed over 50 years camping in the Wombat State Forest to bask in the beauty and solitude. I was a paid up member of The Greens from mid 1990s until 2003 mainly to assist in the call to reduce the clear fell logging in this State forest. (I left this political party as I found the policies and the agenda of this group was starting to border on the ridiculous). I do question the truth with statements made by the groups listed in this advert and the authority authoring the advertisement…Victorian National Parks Association. First, the Victorian Government has not yet committed or promised to create more National Parks after the Central West investigation. The investigation was performed by the Victorian Environmental Assessment Council, (VEAC), with recommendations following two public submission periods with final report presented to the then Minister involved, Lily D’Ambrosio. That is as far as the report got. The suggestion that rural and regional livelihoods will be supported through visitation and nature-based tourism with National Park status is most likely a falsehood. I visited a number of local businesses within the confines of the Wombat State Forest and Lerderderg State Park and discussed what impact National Park status would mean. General opinion was not good with grave concern with loss of income from the current weekend visitors who enjoy activities that National Park status will restrict. Applauding the decision to end native forest logging in the east of Victoria prematurely, (January 1, 2024, rather than 2030), is a total lack of concern by the listed groups in this advertisement for the businesses and rural communities involved in this industry. I trust some of you are happy dancing and standing on your Victorian Native Hardwood timber floor, sitting at the same timber dining table this coming Christmas. Many will be wondering where the next dollar is coming from in the New Year. I and others are calling for a joint relook with rational groups and parties, including First Nations, on how our National Park forests are currently managed, and consider possible better ways as it is questionable that the State of Victoria can afford to manage any more National Park land. Some may know me from previous letters. I am part of the admin team of the Bush User Groups United, (BUGU), Facebook page (currently in hibernation). The comments I have made are in harmony with the BUGU ideals, ideals that some have misconstrued. Stephen Smitham Darley

The Bacchus Marsh Netball Association are excited to use the new courts – especially netballers Payton, Amelia, and Harper Hawkins. PHOTO: LACHLAN ELLIS/TMN By Lachlan Ellis

A brand-new facility was officially unveiled last Tuesday, with local basketball, netball, volleyball, and futsal players set to reap the benefits. Moorabool Shire Mayor Cr Ally Munari, and East Moorabool Ward Councillors Moira Berry and Tonia Dudzik, joined Member for Eureka Michaela Settle and members from the Bacchus Marsh Basketball Association and Bacchus Marsh Netball Association to open the stadium with a ribbon cutting. Backed by a $1.925 million grant from the State Government’s ‘Local Sports Infrastructure Fund’, the new fourcourt indoor stadium at Taverner Street – Stage 1 of the Moorabool Aquatic and Recreation Centre (MARC) – is set to fully open next month. The facility will accommodate for the more than 1,900 people in the two associations, not to mention players of volleyball and futsal. It will also be open for school sports events and other indoor sports looking to establish new teams and competitions. Cr Munari said the new facility would be a real asset to the community in 2024 and beyond. “The indoor stadium is a wonderful multi-purpose facility, and I’d like to say thank you to the State Government for contributing through the Local Sports Infrastructure Fund to this $17.55 million project. Our aim is that this facility, once fully activated for community use, will improve the physical and mental health, and wellbeing of the community,” Cr Munari said. “It’s a facility that can be used for both sport and social interaction.” Ms Settle thanked all those who had made the facility possible. “There’s so many sports communities, and so many groups who are going to be engaged here. I’d like to take a moment to acknowledge my colleague [Member for Melton] Steve McGhie…he was the original person that really pushed this with the State Government,” she said. “You can feel already how much a part of the community it’s going to become. Basketball alone is in the thousands [of members] locally, and really needed this space.” Bacchus Marsh Netball Association Games and Umpire Coordinator Debbie Stevenson said the new stadium would give more people the chance to play netball. “Hopefully having more sport time, we’ll be able to get more teams in, a bigger stadium with a roof that doesn’t leak with rain. It’ll give us a chance to expand in the future if possible, that’s not really possible with where we are at

the moment.” Ms Stevenson told the Moorabool News. Belgravia Leisure will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the four courts, two multi-program spaces, and function room with kitchenette the facility contains, with its CEO Nick Cox saying the company was “very much looking forward to starting this partnership with Council and bringing the community of Bacchus Marsh and surrounds a much-needed modern sport and recreation space”. The new stadium also contains 340 seats with standalone changerooms, a first aid room and referees’ room, car parking with 118 spaces, and more.

‘A’ COMPONENT OF ‘MARC’ STILL MISSING

Stage 2 of MARC, the regional bowls and community hub, has also been fully funded – but Stage 3, the indoor pool complex, has received Council and State Government funding, but still needs Federal Government funding to be completed. Cr Munari and Ms Settle said they would both continue strongly advocating for the Federal Government to provide the final piece of the puzzle – a $15 million grant. “We’ll continue to push as hard as we can to achieve our goal. We’ll continue advocating heavily to the Federal Government to provide the rest of the funding, so this wonderful facility can be completed. We’ve got the bowls hub going up as well, it’s going to be a wonderful facility,” Cr Munari told the Moorabool News. “We’re listening to our community, and will continue listening to our community, on what they’re telling us they want. For a really really long time, we’ve known what that is, it’s an indoor pool.” “I know how important it [the indoor pool] is to the community. We’ve been running a petition, and we’re collecting up signatures, we’ll certainly be taking that to the Federal Government. I really want to see this built, I know how much it means to the community,” Ms Settle added. “I’m really glad we [the State Government] have stepped in and put in our $10 million, but let’s get this built.”

New childcare rejected By Lachlan Ellis

Moorabool Shire Council has rejected a new childcare centre in Bacchus Marsh, taking into account neighbouring residents’ concerns about traffic, amenity, and safety. The motion to approve a new childcare at 113 Masons Lane, Bacchus Marsh came before Council at its Development Assessment Committee on Wednesday 13 December, with nine written objections submitted. Two objectors also addressed Council before the matter was voted on: Chris Niessen and Mr Niesson said the childcare would lead to a major increase in local traffic and parking issues. “I’m going to go straight to the issues that my wife and I found, in regards to the traffic impact assessment report. The impact assessment report had the following issues: the description of the roadwork network does not account for the significant narrowing of Masons Lane as a result of the new pedestrian bike path from Bacchus Marsh Aqualink project. Another point is that local traffic is not assessed at all, rather an assumption made that it is likely to be low,” Mr Niessen said. “The parking availability in the locality was assessed on Tuesday the 24th of January 2023, during some school holidays, and in the same week as the Australia Day holiday – hardly a typical morning for this local area.” The second speaker, Peter Veal, said he had done his own road report and submitted it to Council for Thursdays through to Saturdays. “A number of cars come in all directions. I put in cars coming each way…there’s a lot of footballers around this time of year, there’d be 40 or 50 blokes that come in their

own cars, and there’s people that walk their dogs as well,” he said. “I live opposite in Young Street, I’ve been there 13 years…the amount of traffic that Masons Lane and Young Street get is a race strip. They shortcut Gisborne Road, even the jumper bars don’t worry people in four-wheel drives. [Especially] school time in the afternoon and morning, when the mothers are running late and going to work.” Council officers said the applicants were “providing all the required car parking on-site, complying with the Planning Scheme”. The last speaker was the applicant, Tajit Singh Arora. “As you know, this area is in demand. If you go to the Department of Education website, this area is a high priority area, it’s in demand for childcares. We’ve reduced the car space, it’s been moved inside, so there’s no issue with the traffic.” Mr Arora said. An alternate motion to reject the childcare centre application was moved by Cr David Edwards, and seconded by Cr Tonia Dudzik. Cr Rod Ward dissented, starting a debate. Cr Edwards argued that while a childcare centre was a permissible use in residential zones, it may “have a significant negative impact on those that live in the immediate area…there is the opportunity to add to what is already a busy road, lots of in and out traffic”. Cr Ward said that the applicant had “gone to a great deal of trouble to address the concerns”, including reducing the capacity of the facility from 84 kids to 76. Six of the seven Councillors voted to refuse the planning permit, with the exception of Cr Ward.

Dear Editor, As the festive season approaches, you could say the Labor Government has given our communities a twisted rendition of the “Twelve Days of Christmas”. On the first day, there was the abrupt scrapping of the timber industry which is set to leave hardworking individuals jobless and a once-thriving sector in ruins. The second day delivered the unwelcome gift of 53 new or increased taxes, burdening Victorians as the most heavily taxed in the nation. On the third day, despite increased taxes, Labor slashed regional road funding by 45 per cent, leaving our infrastructure neglected. The fourth day uncovered a broken health system with long ambulance wait times and insufficient resources. On the fifth day, scarce day care availability added to the struggles of families already facing financial hardship. The sixth day was all about insufficient investment and bureaucratic hurdles from the Labor Government, which has led to a crippling housing shortage and soaring homelessness rates. On the seventh day, we witnessed a glaring stat: A surge of more than 15 per cent in the social housing register since 2021. The eighth day delivered another nasty surprise: our latest energy bills were up, an alarming increase from 25 to 100 per cent. On the ninth day, hardworking Victorians unfairly copped the bill for Local Government funding inequities through soaring annual rate notices. The 10th day was painful, all Victorians receiving a hefty $600 million bill for the Commonwealth Games cancellation. The 11th day brought a surge in crime rates and an annual exodus of 500 police officers from the force. On the 12th day, Victorians are left to bear the weight of a staggering daily interest payment of $15 million, a consequence of Labor’s financial mismanagement. Just a perfect ID23 night By Michael Howard (HRV)

If there was any doubt – and surely there wasn’t – that 2023 belonged to team Just Believe, the Larajay Farm stable delivered the most decisive exclamation point last night with an Inter Dominion domination. The brilliant trotter, whose year included capturing Victoria’s prized Great Southern Star and transforming Australia’s international trotting reputation in Europe, was in a class of his own at Albion Park, delivering Greg Sugars an extraordinary third successive trotting championship. His handsome victory also delivered back-to-back success to trainer Jess Tubbs, owners the Iona Trotter Syndicate, and breeder Yabby Dam Farms, who are sharing the ride with a growing army of fans that will continue to thrill in Just Believe’s brilliance throughout the Victorian summer. “It’s incredible, that horse is just something special,” Tubbs told Sky Racing. “The journey he has taken us on and continues to, he won with the ear plugs in and it’s an Inter Dominion – it’s just incredible. “Some days (training is) all a bit too much, but then coming up here and going through what we’ve been through tonight for so many excited owners and it just means the world to them and to us. We are so grateful for the support, and these are the moments we do it for.” There were no surprises out of the gate on Saturday night, with Sugars happy to sit in the breeze with the short-priced favourite after Mufasa Metro’s reinsman John Justice made his intention to take and hold the lead clear. With that pair at the front of the field none dared challenge and they were able to dictate a pedestrian pace, with

Sugars not opening Just Believe up until the final half. A 27.8-second third quarter extended the field and had the favourite round the final bend on Mufasa Metro’s outside, with Just Believe quickly putting paid to his main rival amid a 28-second last quarter in such convincing fashion that Sugars need not even reach for the plugs. “He’s my mate and he’s done a super job tonight,” Sugars told Sky Racing. “He’s just a phenomenal horse. He’s just got a never-say-die attitude. “Even in a couple of races where things haven’t gone to plan, he’s never come off the track tired. He just runs through the line no matter where he is. He’s just a very

The final Centre meet for 2023 was held on Friday evening with all athletes participating in 4 events for the program. PB Stars of the Week were awarded to Lola Parsons, Ruby Tatchell, Arijana Brown, Archer Pell, and Clover De Spirit, after all athletes recorded 4 PB’s for the meet. On Saturday the Centre had 13 teams represented at the 2023-24 State Relay Championships at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park. The 4x200m relay events were held in the morning session. First on the track for the Marsh were the Under 15 boys. With injury and illness hitting the team over recent weeks, each boy stepped up and ran incredibly well placing 10th overall. The Girls Under 10 & 11’s were next on the track. Up against some strong opponents, both teams ran their hearts out finishing 6th & 9th respectively. The Mixed Under 14 were our final team to compete in the morning session. All athletes ran superbly, placing 11th overall. After the lunch break, the 4x100m events took place. Always the pinnacle of the Championships, the buzz around the stadium was exciting. The Under 14 boys lined up first for the Marsh. This team was also affected with injuries/illness and many thanks to the boys who ensured the team took to the track. Well done guys finishing 23rd overall. The Under 15’s returned to race their 4x100 event and each

boy gave their all, finishing in 12th place. The Under 10 girls ran exceptionally well, and the girls were rewarded for their hard work over the past few months being presented with a State Silver medal. The Under 11 girls also produced a mighty effort and should be proud of their 7th placing. BMLAC were well represented in the Mixed 4x100m races. The Under 14’s came up against some tough competition but fought it out until the finish line placing 21st overall. The Under 9’s, in their first State Relay Championships, will benefit from the experience. Well done team on a 13th placing. The Under 11’s determination right ‘til the end, saw them finish 11th. The final session for the day, were the Swedish Medley events. The Under 10 girls once again returned to the track and a gutsy performance from each runner saw the girls rewarded for effort, dipping across the finish line for a 3rd placing and taking home the State Bronze medal. The Girls Under 11’s were our final team to run for the Championships. Coming up against some strong competition, the girls battled it out for a 10th placing. The Centre will have a short break and return on Saturday 20th January 2024. The same weekend will see the following athletes represent the Centre at the State Combined Event - Harbin Kaur Aujla, Jacob Cassar, Mia Dutt, Kobi Hehir, Harry Holland, Patrick & Harrison Lovett.

special animal and I’m so proud of the job he’s been able to do and everyone at Larajay Farm. “Jess has done an awesome job. She’s the backbone of the stable and I’m so proud to be able to celebrate this with her.” It more than capped a special night for Larajay Farm after Better Eclipse ran a superb second to Leap To Fame in the Inter Dominion Pacing Championship. The winner was outstanding, reinforcing his brutal strength and speed that has reaffirmed that Grant Dixon’s star is a generational horse with many more Grand Circuit moments to come.

Ballan Brumbies Basketball

The final round of 2023 saw Ballan Brumbies Under 16 Boys B take on Wildcats, both teams having players with long histories against the other and, currently sitting third and fourth, the match was important for ladder position. Ballan, playing without a bench due to some Christmas party related absences, got off to a slow start as they struggled to find an early rhythm on offense. Wildcats, though, struggled to generate anything against Ballan’s 2-3 zone, a defense they don’t regularly employ. The Brumbies started to assert some dominance inside as centres Angus Tranter and Barney Batiste combined well, each setting the other up for early baskets. James Pace was making his trademark slashing drives to the basket but was struggling to finish, not helped when he tweaked his troublesome ankle. Wildcats were keeping things close through the inside power of Rani Alwyn and the creativity of the always tough to guard Jagger Dark. With Wildcats focused on stopping the Brumbies bigs, Cruze Miller found space on the outside. The usually reliable bomber has struggled with his shot this season, but connected on a pair of three pointers midway through the half. That forced the defense to react and opened up the floor for Pace as he started to get some joy. When he did miss, Batiste and Tranter where there to clean up. A late run saw Ballan take a 2615 lead into the half in a match that was closer than the scoreboard suggested. Ballan didn’t let up in the second half as they mixed up their attacks well, keeping Wildcats off balance. When Wildcats focused on the Brumbies shooters, Batiste and Pace strolled to the basket. When they focused inside, Miller and Fletcher Garner connected on open jump shots. Most tellingly, Ballan’s defense went

up a gear after half time. Dark aside, who was at the centre of practically everything good for Wildcats, the Brumbies were smothering. That allowed Pace and Batiste to get out and run, either punishing Wildcats transition defense themselves, or finding Garner and Cruze for open looks. Batiste, in particular, was passing the ball well. Pace fouled out with around three minuted to play, leaving Ballan a player short on the floor. Wildcats took advantage to make a small run, but with Ballan having doubled their score by this point, it was merely academic as Miller hit a long fadeaway two on the buzzer to see out the game. The Brumbies won in convincing fashion 63-30, going into the Christmas break in good form. Post drinks saw Wendouree attack, and the runs began the flow, Hayden picked up two, and Jack picked up a late one, but Wendouree batted their overs 5 down for 194. No Christmas joy for Lions By Todd Whelan

Despite another solid bowling performance on the road and stoic half century from former Captain Bradley Barnes, the Lions lost their final match ahead of the Christmas break, falling 36 runs shy of Wendouree. After winning the toss, the Lions were on top early having the hosts in trouble at 4/50 including notable big guns Cole Roscholler (16), Heath Pyke (16) and Liam Brady (13) all gone cheaply. Wendouree were able to rebuild some momentum through the middle and lower order before being bowled out in the 49th over for a modest 169. In reply, the Lions were immediately on the back foot in their run chase when the top order capitulated to be 4/15. A fight back ensued as Bradley Barnes and Brodie Ward combined for a 66 run fifth wicket partnership before Barnes was dismissed for a gallant 51. Unfortunately that would be all she wrote for the Lions resurgence following another collapse that would see the Lions go from 4/81 and some hope to 9/94 and virtually none. A dashing cameo innings from spinning all-rounder Liam Cornford (28*) provided some cheek late for the tenth wicket but the degree of inevitability was confirmed in the 41st over when number 11 batsman Chamika Sattambi (11) was dismissed. While there was merit in some areas of the fight from the Lions, the one wish above all on their Christmas list will be

for runs in the New Year. The recent back-to-back title winners and last season semi-finalists find themselves in seventh place,18 points out side of the top four. Harness Highlights By Len Baker

Ever progressive Horsham commenced the week on Monday December 11 with a seven-event card which saw long time Mt Rowan trainer Julian Jobe successful with Tell All-Miss Emjay 7YO gelding A Vapar Storm. Driven by Michael Bellman, A Vapar Storm was taken back from gate six to settle three back in the moving line as polemarker and favourite Miki Steamed Home led. When Goodtime Stryker went forward from the rear in the final circuit, A Vapar Storm immediately latched to his back for a great ride home. Angling wide on turning, A Vapar Storm produced an electric finish to race away and score by 6.6 metres from Icanmotor, with Goodtime Stryker a game third 3.3 metres back. The mile rate 2-00.5. Long shot winners were prominent during the day and Balliang trainer/driver Jason Hackett‘s Always B Miki-Anna Finn 3Y0 filly Alanna Miki ($19.00) defeated her older rivals in the Betta Home Living – Driver Pace over 2200 metres returning a mile rate of 2-01.2. Driven with aggression to cross from outside the front line, Alanna Miki gave plenty in the run home after being tackled by the favourite The Notorious R B G (one/one – outside winner home turn) to prevail by 1.5 metres in a rate of 2-01.2 after the pair drew away approaching the home turn. Hez All Rock (one/two – three wide last lap) was third 9.9 metres back. Another Balliang winner was owner/ trainer Tyrone Abela after honest 6YO Im Stately-Calder Image gelding Gee Cee Calder scored in the 2200 metre The Weekly Advertiser Trotters Handicap which gave Kerryn Manning a great return to the winners circle after a long lay off through injury. Coming from 30 metres, Gee Cee Calder settled three back in the moving line with speedy beginner Allawart Bob leading from barrier three for locals Laurie Young and Ryan Stackhouse. Going forward three wide with a rush in the last lap to join the leader on the home turn, Gee Cee Calder ran home nicely to register an easy 11.5 metre victory (his sixth in 28 out-

ings), accounting for Allawart Bob in a mile rate of 2-04.4. Shezagem (four pegs after a slow start from barrier three) was third 5.7 metres back. Geelong and Mildura raced on Tuesday and Lara trainer James Warnock landed the GHRC Staff & Volunteers Pace over 2100 metres at Geelong with 3Y0 Metropolitan-Trish Bromac gelding Caledonian Ranger. Raced by James in partnership with son Paul, Caledonian Ranger driven by Gordon’s Darby McGuigan led throughout from gate four to account for Really Whisky (gate three) which trailed using the sprint lane to no avail by 4.4 metres in a rate of 2-01. Polemarker Ima Popstar (three pegs) was third 3.8 metres away. Daylesford’s Mick Barby and wife Anne-Maree Conroy were victorious with handy 6YO Quake Jet-Adellas Dash gelding Quake Proof trained by Mick and raced by the pair in the Evolution Lodge Trotters Mobile over 2100 metres. Driven by Anne-Maree. Quake Proof after following the leader Imhavingoodtime (gate three) finished best along the sprint lane to gain the day by a neck from El Rasamo (one/ two – three wide to death at bell), with Majestic Mover (death – one/one last lap) third 6.7 metres back. The mile rate 2-02. At Bendigo on Wednesday, Melton trainer/driver Clinton Welsh scored a well overdue victory with 6YO Roll With Joe-Petousa entire Roll With Rosco in the Sheahan Plumbing 4YO & Older Maiden Trotters Mobile when making his 31st race appearance. In a tough effort, Roll With Rosco after a slow beginning from outside the front line settled near last as Mattie Gath with Frankythefrenchman went forward from gate five to cross Flying Flynn (gate two). Spending plenty of petrol when going forward three wide mid-race to park outside the leader at the bell, Roll With Rosco in a two horse battle all the way up the running was coaxed to the wire, gaining the day by a nose in a tricky finish over Frankiethefrenchman, with Te Kuity Kitty (one/three last lap) making late ground for third 7.4 metres back. The mile rate 2-05.1.
