Sunflowers for hope, and Ukraine

Crash victims escape injury By Lachlan Ellis Despite involving a truck and occurring on one of Moorabool’s busiest roads, a car accident has ended as well as one can – without injury. Police, SES, and paramedics were called to Gisborne Road in Darley on the evening of Monday 4 July, not far from shopping complex. Despite the incident occurring in Darley, it was the VICSES Gisborne Unit that responded at around 5 pm, assisting with traffic direction while road closures were in effect. The incident involved two vehicles colliding, with an Ambulance Victoria spokesperson telling the Moorabool News that “a man believed to be in his 30s was assessed by paramedics for muscular pain, but did not require treatment or transport”. VicRoads were also called to the scene, due to traffic light poles coming down at the time of the accident. SES volunteers were cleared from the incident at 7.19 pm.

Winters in the west of the shire can be bleak and dreary, but local artists are brightening the Ballan township up with crocheted sunflowers – and you can learn how to help with a free workshop. The volunteer-run Wombat Regional Arts Network, which has also decorated Ballan in the past during the ‘WinterKnits’ and ‘Birds in Ballan’ events, will be busy crocheting until the end of July. The group has run two informal workshops at the Ballan Bowling Club, with the third and final workshop to be held on Tuesday 19 July, from 1 – 3.30 pm. Wombats volunteer Lou Callow said sunflowers were specifically chosen not just because they’re colourful and eye-catching, but also for symbolic reasons. “The sunflower is a powerful symbol of hope, love, and friendship. They are uplifting, and as their name implies, represent the sun. Sunflowers are popping up around the Ballan streetscape to add colour, lift spirits, and to encourage the sun to visit us more often during this bleak winter,” Ms Callow told the Moorabool News. “The deeper motivation for creating sunflowers in the streetscape is to support for the global movement of solidarity for Ukrainian people suffering from the ongoing war with Russia. The sunflower is the national symbol of Ukraine, and the sunflower seed is a major component of Ukrainian crop production.” The sunflower streetscape has begun, but may expand further along Inglis Street with sewn, knitted, and painted sunflowers as well, based on how many volunteers chip in. “We’ve got about 10 volunteers at the moment, CWA and the Library are supporting us too,” Ms Callow said. “Hopefully now that there’s some sunflowers in the street, that’ll spark interest and get more people involved. It just brightens people’s day, and gets people talking, and walking,” fellow Wombat Helen Hammond said.
