Superload to cause freeway delays Moorabool motorists have been asked to plan their journey and allow extra time on the road this Friday morning, with a superload set to cause delays on the Western Freeway. From Wednesday 13 July to Sunday 17 July, a large superload carrying an electrical transformer will travel from Glen Waverley to Bordertown, South Australia, in stages across the four days. Beginning its journey at around 9.30 pm on Wednesday 13 July, the superload will travel across metropolitan Melbourne to Yarraville, and then from Yarraville to Ballarat on the night of Thursday 14 July. Motorists travelling in both directions of the Western Freeway between Dicksons Road, Pentland Hills and Old Melbourne Road, Ballan will need to share the outbound lanes between 1 am and 4 am Friday 15 July, as the superload travels on the wrong side of the freeway. The superload is approximately 90 metres long – almost the size of two Olympic swimming pools – and weighs close to 390 tonnes.

A VicRoads spokesperson said opportunities will be provided to pass, however, road users should expect delays as the superload often moves at a slow speed. “If you need to travel when the superload is on the road, plan ahead or seek an alternate route where possible to avoid delays. “For your safety, please stay well clear of the superload. There will be no viewing opportunities when the superload is on the move or parked,” the spokesperson said. VicRoads traffic management officers and load escorts will be in attendance, travelling with the superloads to help the vehicle manoeuvre around corners, temporarily remove signage and lights, place steel supports over existing drainage and then put everything back in place once the superload has passed through. To find out more about the route and if it will impact you, visit www.vicroads.gov. au/superload. You can also check real time travel advice at traffic.vicroads.vic.gov.au. The planned route is subject to change.

Waste forum rep appointed By Lachlan Ellis

Freeway collision non-fatal By Lachlan Ellis A multi-vehicle crash on the Western Freeway early last Monday (4 July) has thankfully resulted in no major injuries, with a police investigation ongoing into how the accident occurred. Eastbound lanes were closed on the Western Freeway near Hopetoun Park following the five-vehicle collision, with paramedics and police attending the scene. A spokesperson for Ambulance Victoria said that a man in his 30s “was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition” after paramedics were called “at about 6.15 am”.

Victoria Police told the Moorabool News the collision was being looked into. “Bacchus Marsh police are investigating after five vehicles collided travelling east on the Western Freeway about 6.15am on 4 July. Police are investigating the circumstances and the investigation remains ongoing,” a Victoria Police spokesperson said. Drivers reported the freeway cleared around an hour after VicTraffic reported “significant delays” and “speed set to 40 km/h” in the eastbound lanes at 6.41 am. If you have any information about the collision that could be useful, you can contact Bacchus Marsh Police Station on 5366 4500.

Council has voted in favour of joining a regional forum on waste management, following State Government legislation dissolving Waste and Resource Recovery Groups (WRRGs). The WRRGs were officially dissolved from 1 July 2022, under the new Victorian Waste and Recycling Act. Under the WRRGs, Victorian councils joined together to plan and coordinate waste management and resource recovery, but the State Government has “yet to provide any concrete details as to an ongoing mechanism that would serve a similar function after June 30, 2022” according to the motion put forward by Cr Tom Sullivan. In the motion, which came before the 6 July Ordinary Meeting of Council (OMC), Cr Sullivan proposed Council appoint a representative to a new ‘Local Government State-Wide Waste Forum’, which has formed seven groups from 79 Local Government Associations across Victoria. The Forum “aims to ensure consistent representation across our rural, regional and metropolitan Councils to advise the State Government” as reforms to the waste

management system continue in the coming years. As one of seven Chairs of the Forum (representing Grampians Central West), Cr Sullivan said the Forum had shown its worth in continuing collaboration between councils, and advocating for local government issues around waste. “There’s a lot of concern about role of local government going forward [under the new Waste Act]. I and the other Forum Chairs have had informal meetings to work out how to ensure local government has a voice going forward,” Cr Sullivan explained. “The 12 member councils in our region have decided we want to continue the forum arrangement that currently exists into the future, because it’s working exceptionally well, and it’s been a wonderful resource for officers. It’s been invaluable to have that peer opportunity. We want to ensure under the new processes, local government does have a voice.” Cr Ward moved the motion, and nominated Cr Sullivan to be Moorabool Shire Council’s representative at the Local Government State-Wide Waste Forum. The motion was seconded by Cr Dudzik, and approved unanimously by Councillors.
