Cobras have blood on their hands Bacchus Marsh v Melton – By Todd Whelan Flag favorites Melton extended their unbeaten run in 2022 to 11 games, muscling their way to a convincing 66 point win over Bacchus Marsh. Leading Bloods forward Ryan Carter recorded his fourth bag of five goals for the season to move within one of Devils spearhead Nick Rodda (41) in the race for the Tony Lockett Medal. Individuals aside it was the Bloods nine goals to two second half including four unanswered in the third, that paved the way for an eighth club win by 40 points or more in 11 games. Bloods midfielder Lachie Watkins (three goals), Blake Souter, Jordyn Cotter and early season recruit Daniel O’Leary were named best afield providing Captain Braedyn Kight (three goals), and Carter brothers Ryan (five goals) and Liam (two goals) every opportunity hitting the scoreboard. While the Cobras missed the drive of injured ruckman Daniel Burton, defender Jack Williams and the aerial presence of Rex Hickman forward, the result for many was deemed inevitable regardless. Replacement young combative ruckman Spencer Meagher impressed again for the Cobras in just his second game, while Tom German, Sam Crea, Tyson Shea and Captain Jake Owen continued their run of good form despite the loss. Cobras young gun Joel Freeman kicked two goals. Coach Tom German will look to bounce back and keep the Cobras finals hopes alive with a win on the road this Saturday against Melton South.

Devils cling to top six spot By Todd Whelan Darley essentially banked the Premiership points won at the weekend and move on quickly to Sunbury after a ‘plain’ 26 point win over a plucky Melton South. While the Devils won all four quarters, the Panthers were left lamenting missed opportunity on the goal front and a missing...well...Dylan Conway (unavailable). The former Port Melbourne star forward was arguably all the Panthers needed to go close winning a fourth on the road this season and back-to-back wins on Darley Park. In fairness, the Devils were missing a few troops of their own. But in their absence, Dylan Landt (three goals and BOG), Mace Cousins and Luther Baker picked up the slack while Bailey Young, Joel Cadman (two goals) and Brett Bewley (three goals) maintained the pressure. Panthers big man Broden Collins was named their best for his defensive role on BFNL leading forward Nick Rodda (one goal). Around stoppage Billy Lloyd and Cody Chapman were solid while Jake Thornton-Gielen’s run was significant. John Kovarik’s efforts to minimise Brett Bewley’s impact in the middle were also recognised by Panthers coach
Heath Pritchard. Melton South should be encouraged by their efforts and give themselves a chance at home this week when they meet Bacchus Marsh. From the outside, the message for the Devils was obvious - ‘just get it done’ regardless, keep beating sides below to maximise finals chances. Dylan Landt was clearly best on ground with his offensive run between the arcs. Captain Brett Bewley confirmed he’ll be dangerous wherever he goes, hitting the scoreboard to consolidate the four quarter nature of the win. Bailey Young consolidated his level of importance with a repeat effort driving performance back of centre. The former Darley Junior continues to add weight to his value in a side reliant on a top six or seven crying out for more impact players week in, week out. Shane Page was stoic, typical Page style, while Leigh Spiteri reminded those in attendance his cleanliness below his knees is vital to the Devils chances moving forward. The win was buoyed by the inclusion of another junior product in Jet Fuller, but soured by the collar-bone injury to second gamer Jyson Fawcett.

Sunbury pose the next hurdle for the Devils. Race to race double
By Michael Howard (HRV)
GOOD things are also clearly in the path of ownership groups Summit Bloodstock and Aaron Bain Racing, who were rewarded for their investments into pacing fillies and mares with a race-to-race double at Cranbourne. First three-year-old filly Soho Historia continued her exceptional run for trainer Emma Stewart, adding the Janine Stewart Memorial Pace to her list of five successive victories
that have extended a remarkable run of form in her new stable.
“She’s only a three-year-old filly, she just seems to be getting better and better and stronger and stronger.”
The past two of those have come in the hands of Connor Clarke, who brought up his 99th career win with the victory.
Aaron Bain Racing and Summit Bloodstock then followed up with a further win with favourite Kusanova in the Dani Lewis Memorial Pace, with the leader pressed late but holding on for a 1.1-metre win.
“She just switches off, a bit too much really when she gets to the front, but she just does what she needs to do and switches on at the right moments and really does it easy,” he said of Soho Historia.
The win was the second of a double for trainer Allan McDonough who also scored in the first with Blitzern.
