She has a strong sense of connection to her community, the environment and her place within the universe. Meet Lou Callow the artist. Her career as an Arts Educator spans more than 40-years; the past 24-years were spent at Bacchus Marsh Grammar school. Ms Callow has guided students in the production of community arts, including garden mosaics, sculptures, and large mural paintings. She has also had a new arts building at the Grammar named “The Lou Callow Gallery and Art School’ back in 2011. Around Ballan, her work has not been limited to the Wombat Regional Arts Network group, who presented Birds in Ballan, Winter Knits, Black Nite-Black Lite and Christmas decoration events, but a couple of characters that just seem to pop up around the town. Over the last 12-months a birdman sat outside the local newsagency, greeting customers to the business. He was green, wore pants with braces, gumboots, a check shirt and hat, with a very large beak that held the weekly edition of The Moorabool News, However, the beak broke and was getting beyond his use and Ms Callow grabbed the opportunity to replace with another ‘gentleman’, looking dapper in a suit jacket and bow tie. “I’ve only remodelled the head really,” Ms Callow said. “I thought I would create another character, but this one does not have a name yet, although he has turned out looking like a Labrador dog.” The body of the art piece is actually a mannequin, and the head is really all that was re-designed, filled with expansion foam with a latex mask. “The dog didn’t bond with me at all,” Ms Callow said laughing. “He had the foam coming out his nose and ears, the mannequin arm and leg fell off when I was putting him in place, it was a comedy of errors,” she said. “The community takes pride in their town, and this was just to provide a bit of fun for everyone. Both artworks became and have become, quite the attraction.” Have a name for the dog?
