Darley gave new coach Dan Jordan his second win in three games, downing Melton South on the road by 33 points. A nine goal to two second half gave the undermanned Devils the separation on the scoreboard they were longing for. Devils marquee recruits Brett Bewley (BOG) and Nick Rodda (8 goals) were the stars of the show, reminiscent of their Williamstown days as the two combined out of midfield , inside 50 on repeat occasions. The Panthers would have been giving themselves a real chance heading in against a Devils line-up without Shane Page, Darren Leonard, the Cadman brothers and Blake Colley. An even first quarter became a slender five point advantage to the home-side at the half, suggesting this game may go down to the wire. But the Devils kicked better for goal and made more of their opportunities according to Panthers coach Heath Pritchard. Despite the loss, Pritchard was really happy with their effort and the “brand of football that we played.”, conceding Bewley and Rodda were the obvious difference. Jake Ancrum played his best game in ‘22 for the Devils while Luther Baker and youngsters Bailey Young and Will Johnson featured prominently. For the Panthers, Devils nemesis Dylan Conway booted five goals and was the beneficiary of a trying support crew, led by Jake Thornton-Gielen and Dylan Jones. Both sides have tough road trips ahead in Round four. The Panthers meet an 0-2 Sunbury on the hunt while the Devils face the undefeated Bloods for a genuine ‘month in’ footy audit. *This Saturday Apple 98.5FM - Melton vs Darley - LIVE RADIO 2pm. An old-fashioned half-time spray from Bloods Coach Aaron Tymms had the desired effect as Melton ‘did enough’ to remain the only undefeated BFNL club, downing the Cobras by 28 points at Maddingley Park. So why the spray? Put simply, Melton’s use of the ball with the aid of a four goal breeze in the opening term especially, was poor and their revered ‘system’ a shadow of their own expectations. The Bloods found themselves on the back foot in the second term leading by just two points (kicked only one goal) and were forced to quell the Cobras inevitable momentum with the breeze. Despite trailing at half time (11 points) and the damage minimised, the Bloods were starting to resemble a little more of their cohesive style. Credit to the Cobras denying the Bloods the game on their own terms for the most part, as Tom German’s men were more direct by foot with the breeze but couldn’t get true bang for buck from their forward 50 entries. The midfield led by Nick Stuhldrier, Daniel Burton, Harry King and Tom German were matching their more fancied opponents between the arcs to earn a slender half time advantage. The Bloods hit the gas in the third term with seven unanswered goals with Ryan Carter (3) and Braeden Kight (2) the focal points. With Cobras playing coach Tom German potentially hamstrung on the sidelines, the Bloods midfield led by Jack Walker went to another level despite the tireless efforts of Burton, Stuhldrier and King who found themselves under the pump. New Cobra Rex Hickman (2 goals) was lively forward and Captain Jake Owen (2 goals) continued to present and test the Bloods defence. The Owen match up became a two and sometimes three on one, such was the weight of importance placed on the proven matchwinner by the opposition defence. The Cobras kept their slim chances alive with two goals in the opening three minutes of the final term before the Bloods steadied to secure the win. Hindsight, often the best judge, identified the Bloods general evenness from player 1 thru 22 to play a significant role. While the disparity between the two sides in this area is debatable, one cannot deny the small sample size that was Saturday - a 28 point difference. That’s about right. While Bacchus Marsh have the bye in round four, an eagle eye from the Cobra faithful will be on the outcome of Jake Owen’s appeal against a two week penalty imposed by the Match Review for an incident during the Anzac Day weekend game against Darley. The outcome is expected this week. FINAL SCORES: Bacchus Marsh 1.2-8, 4.4-28, 4.4-28, 8.7-55 lost Melton - 1.4-10, 2.5-17, 9.8-62, 12.11-83 BEST: B/Marsh - N. Stuhldrier, D. Burton, J. Williams, H. Another One Over All for Myrniong duo By Tim O’Connor (HRV) The burgeoning Victorian trotting ranks look to have another top end player with One Over All continuing to sparkle from the Jess Tubbs and Greg Sugars stable. The New Zealand import produced a dominant frontrunning success in last week’s Mildura Trotters Cup and was in similar form with an all-the-way triumph in Saturday night’s Aldebaran Park Trot at Tabcorp Park Melton. Sugars speared to the lead from barrier six and never looked in any trouble as the four-year-old cruised down to score by 6m over All Cashed Up (Anton Golino/Jason Lee), who snagged a spot behind the leader and trailed him throughout the journey. “With more racing under his belt and if he learns to be quite adaptable and gets his head screwed on right, the way that he can run time quite comfortably, he will measure up with some pretty handy horses I think,” Sugars told TrotsVision.
Sugars said One Over All picked up a bug on his way over from New Zealand and the horse’s first Australian preparation never really got going. He debuted on our shores with a sixth placing in the 2021 Victoria Trotters Derby and was then stood down following a poor performance at Melton in early November before being sent for a spell. He returned with a second placing at Hamilton in late March, then made a mistake at Bendigo in early April before breaking through at Maryborough a week later. “Since he’s had a break and we’ve been able to build him up slowly, his manners are much better this time around and he’s still got all that lethal speed,” Sugars said. “We are very happy with what he’s done his last three starts.” The son of Angus Hall has now won eight races from One Over All winning at Tabcorp Park Melton.
