AusNet Services, owner and operator of Victoria’s transmission network, has officially been sold to a Canadian multinational, with the new ownership coming into effect on February 16 this year. On 1 November last year, AusNet put out a media release stating that it had agreed to the terms of a Ordinary Scheme Implementation The next Meeng of Council will be held Victoria Transmission Network Project Deed (SID), “under which Brookfield is to on Wednesday 7 July 2021 in the(WVTNP), Council Chambers, 15 Stead Brookfield St and whether acquire all the shares in AusNet for cash would push for it to be put underground, Ballan, starng at 6.00 pm. consideration by means of a scheme of a spokesperson for Brookfield told the arrangement”. We really hope with a new company like Brookfield, they’ll look at new technologies, rather than staying with the old ‘tried and true’ stuff that we think is unsafe.” Ms Muir said she was unimpressed with Brookfield’s comments regarding AusNet and the WVTNP. “I think it doesn’t say anything, it leaves it very open…I would ask, do they understand how appalling this project has been, and how appallingly AusNet has run it? We really hope they correct the wrongs AusNet has done. We hope Brookfield will do better, and we expect AusNet to do better,” she said. The acquisition cost a reported $7.7 billion USD, or around $10.2 billion AUD.

Community groups protesting the WVTNP’s overhead plans are hopeful for meaningful change after the acquisition, but Chair of Stop AusNet’s Towers, Emma Muir, isn’t holding her breath. “I would hope they’ll be better to deal with, they couldn’t be any worse. But I note from what they’re writing about, they see an opportunity to make money in the transmission of power and renewables in Victoria. They’re here to make money…I
