“You can’t save the environment by wrecking the environment,” was just one message that came out from three community meetings held last week. It is a message that the Central Highlands Power Alliance (Stop AusNet Towers) are intent on making sure the state government Ministers are listening too. The meetings were held in Bacchus Marsh, Ballan and Wallace with Australian actor and Bolwarrah landowner Stephen Curry, one of the speakers. “It is a disgrace what is happening, and I can’t sit back and watch what is happening,” he said. “This is environmental piracy. What is the price we have to pay? New footings dug

By Lachlan Ellis The clubrooms at Darley Park have been knocked down, and Councillors have joined State MPs and local sporting club representatives to mark the beginning of the new long-awaited Darley Park Pavilion project. Mayor Cr Tom Sullivan joined Crs Dudzik, Berry and Edwards, alongside State MPs Steve McGhie (Melton) and Michaela Settle (Buninyong) and tenant club members, to turn the first sod on Wednesday 2 March. Council and the tenant clubs – Darley Football Netball Club (DFNC), Darley Junior Football Netball Club (DJFNC) and Darley Cricket Club – have advocated for State Government funding for years, culminating in a $2.5 million grant, awarded under the Growing Suburbs Fund (GSF). A further $1.1 million has been contributed by Council, while the DFNC provided $481,000 for the project. Cr Sullivan said it was wonderful to see the project finally getting off the ground. “This project has been a long time in the making, and we’re very grateful to have received funding from the State Government’s Growing Suburbs Fund to go with contributions from Council and the Darley Football Netball Club to give the club a state-of the art facility,” he said. “These collaborative-type ventures are the best kinds of projects; people have pride and ownership over the project itself…there’s a lot of buy-in from user groups.” The new multi-purpose pavilion will benefit not just the tenant clubs, but the whole community, with large community rooms and meeting rooms, technology to support learning opportunities, female-friendly change facilities, and upgraded change facilities for umpires in the pipeline. East Ward Councillor David Edwards played a major role in getting peri-urban councils, including Moorabool, eligible for funding under the GSF, during his time on the Peri Urban Group of Rural Councils (PUGRC). He told the Moorabool News it was rewarding to see the old clubrooms going down, and was looking forward to seeing the new pavilion later this year. “I think it’s fantastic, this is something the Peri Urban Group advocated for for ten years, and I was Chair for five of those years. Steve McGhie came along and had a bit of a vision of what it could do for our communities…he advocated strongly and finally convinced the Government,” Cr Edwards said. “This is the first of three projects that have already been approved in a short period of time. It’s a game changer for our communities, no longer do we have to wait until we’re way too many facilities short, we can start to build those facilities as the community grows.

“It’s a really important fund I hope the Government continues to deliver.” Steve McGhie said he was thrilled to see Moorabool and other peri-urban councils added to the GSF, after his advocacy. “Two years ago, myself and Michaela advocated for the Growing Suburbs Fund to be provided to peri-urban councils such as Moorabool…up until then, they weren’t entitled to be in the Growing Suburbs Fund pool,” he said. “I put it in a budget bid back in 2020, that there either needs to be a separate fund for periurban councils, or they should be included in the Growing Suburbs Fund pool. I’m pleased to say that in the November 2020 budget, with the support of the Local Government Minister Shaun Leane and Treasurer Tim Pallas, peri-urban councils got included in the Growing Suburbs Fund. “Through the good work of Council, and through the support of State Government, these projects can be built.” The Darley Park Pavilion is expected to be completed this October.

FUTURE FUNDING PLANS Over an 18-month period, Moorabool has received $9.5 million from the State Government under the Growing Suburbs Fund – but Council CEO Derek Madden said there were still ideas that needed investment. “We have a list of projects that we see the Growing Suburbs Fund potentially adding to, one is the Racecourse Reserve, but also we have an exciting project at the Lawn Bowls Facility in Bacchus Marsh,” Mr Madden said. “Also, we have some smaller projects that aren’t the big-ticket items that we want to use funding for. We’ve been successful in some small projects such as Mill Park (Ballan), but in addition we want to spread the funding around the Shire as best we can, and ensure it’s spread evenly throughout the Shire which is dealing with growth in many areas, not just Bacchus Marsh and Ballan.” Mr Madden said the Moorabool Aquatic and Recreation Centre (MARC) could also potentially receive partial funding under the GSF. “It is a big project…we are hoping that both Federal and State Government will come to the party this year, and give $15 million each to Moorabool Shire for the development of the aquatics facility,” he said.

Environmental piracy continued from page 1 The purpose of the meetings was to inform the community about the campaign, the legal challenge, the EES process, land access, options and rights. Myrniong landowner Emma Muir said they all fully support an urgent transition to renewable energy in a way that achieves the end goals. “AEMO and AusNet’s current plans go directly against this. We all expect better,” she said. “We are asking that the project needs to go back to AEMO, so one of the more environmentally, agriculturally, socially and economically responsible alternatives can be chosen. “If it can’t be overhead, it must go underground,” she said. Ms Muir said they must stay together as a community. “We have a much better chance of being heard. “There are two elections this year, don’t give up,” she said. The group acknowledge climate change and the need for sustainable renewable energy however, “we should not pay the price so the people of Melbourne benefit”. “This will result in mass devastation to our communities. The solution chosen, the cheapest solution, is the worst solution. There are other solutions,” she said. Gavin Ronan is the Chair of the legal working group and told the meetings the Planning Minister Richard Wynne could also “kill the project”. “We have to push him to introduce changes to the setbacks provisions. He has the power to approve or kill the project,” he said. “There is another ten of these projects for Victoria following on from this one. The reason the easement is set to be 100 metres wide is not just for one tower as scheduled but, most likely to place many towers into the future.” AusNet was the successful tenderer to deliver the infrastructure; a 190km high-voltage transmission line connecting Bulgana, near Ararat, to Sydenham, in Melbourne’s west. Over 60 kilometres of the proposed route will cut a path directly through the Moorabool Shire, with 380 towers, as tall as the MCG light towers.

Some of the proposed route will navigate not only across the most productive soil in the country, but through state owned forests and water catchments. Mr Ronan said the Environmental Effects Statement (EES) process is currently underway and submissions are still being sought. “The State Government must approve the project before work can start. “The EES gives planning approval, however, really it’s a done deal, although a change of government could lead to

this being killed,” he said. Stephen Curry asked the crowd “who’s hearing this outside the region”? “Opposition leader Matthew Guy needs to make this a top election issue.” Notable attendees at the Ballan and Wallace meetings included, Moorabool Crs Tom Sullivan, Tonia Dudzik, Ally Munari and Paul Tatchell, Member for Buninyong Michaela Settle, and the Member for Western Victoria Bev Mc Arthur. Today (March 8), the group will travel to the steps of Parliament House in Spring Street Melbourne and protest the high voltage overhead transmission lines project.

Quarry approved By Lachlan Ellis A controversial application for a Coimadai sand quarry has been approved by Council after an 80-minute discussion, after amendments were made to put further conditions on the applicant. Concrete producer Hanson Australia had its application considered at Council’s 3 March Ordinary Meeting, with eight objectors addressing concerns about dust, noise, and safety. The application also received 67 objections. Given the roads to be used by the quarry, including Seereys and Gisborne Roads, are owned by VicRoads, Council’s recommendations will come before VCAT, which must then approve the quarry’s construction. The applicant has lodged an appeal to VCAT for failure to determine the application within the prescribed time. The application also includes a requirement to complete a right turn lane and left turn lane, and upgrade the access at Gisborne Road, “to the satisfaction of and at no cost to VicRoads”, as well as a truck wheel-wash. In a written submission, Coimadai resident James Ross argued that Council’s recommendations don’t go far enough, and drivers would be put at risk by the plans. “I raise safety concerns for all road users and our community. Thank you for the recommendations you have already added to the permit. I believe the recommendations do not go far enough to address the impacts this permit will create,” Mr Ross said. “The road size, escarpments, and intersection create a hazard and poor visibility for road users. The increase of heavy vehicles travelling south along Gisborne Road will hinder school traffic entering Bennetts Lane, and subsequently will cause a backup of northbound traffic.”

Mr Ross said in 2019, VicRoads representatives attended the area after concerns were raised by Coimadai Primary School representatives. “VicRoads’ response was that they were appalled and concerned about a hazardous intersection, however, to date nothing has been done.” Another objector, Troy Strang, raised concerns there could be a fatality on the roads. “I’ve had a number of near misses on Gisborne Road, including one with my daughter in the car where I had to leave the road to avoid a head-on collision,” he told the Council meeting. “We spend probably billions preventing road trauma. Why not ask the applicant to contribute to the road? I’ve been involved in a fatality, and believe me, people don’t get over it. I don’t want to see another family go through what we’ve gone through. If this permit goes through without upgrading that road, people will die.” Cr Ally Munari suggested further amendments to the application, namely that fencing on the site be “industrial standard height”, and that 250 metre buffer zones be subject to an integrity report of the site’s ridge. Cr Munari’s amended motion was seconded by Cr Paul Tatchell, and passed without opposition. According to the application document, VCAT have provided hearing dates for a compulsory conference to be held on 16 March 2022, and allocated 7 days for a Merits Hearing in June 2022. Council will provide the community’s written submissions as part of its submissions to VCAT regarding the quarry. The OMC was scheduled for Wednesday 2 March however, internet issues postponed the meeting until the next day Thursday 3 March.

The next Tarantino?

By Lachlan Ellis An 18-year-old Moorabool man has taken out the ‘Emerging Filmmaker Award’ at the North Bellarine Film Festival, with the skilful cinematography and gritty story impressing the jury. Jack Sillitoe from Bacchus Marsh won a trophy and a $500 prize for his 12-minute film ‘Fixity’, which follows an investigative journalist being stalked by a criminal, who threatens him not to publish evidence of a murder. Fixity had a budget of just $500, and stars Jack as ‘The Journalist’, while his brother Max stars as ‘The Unknown Man’ stalking him. Craig Sillitoe, Jack’s father, is the film’s cinematographer. Mr Sillitoe thanked the organisers of the Film Festival, and said it was a wonderful surprise to receive the award. “I’d just turned 18, I was feeling great – and just to top that off, I got told I’d won this massive award, I was really

excited. For my family the excitement was double mine, I told my mum first because she was the only one home. She screamed, she knew I’d worked so hard on the film,” he told the Moorabool News. “I’ve been interested in filmmaking since about 2018, I started watching Tarantino films and from there, watched more and more films. First, I just enjoyed watching them, then I saw the structure of how they were made…at that point, I felt like I wanted to make one for myself, and understand how they work.” It’s Mr Sillitoe’s dream to start a career directing full feature length films, taking particular inspiration from artful directors like David Lynch and Akira Kurosawa. To any aspiring young filmmakers who weren’t sure how to begin, Mr Sillitoe said it all starts with picking up a camera. “I’d say just do what I did, I picked up a camera, went along with my mates, and just filmed anything and tried to make a story out of it. Recently I filmed a drive with my dad and

I, we do photography work and drive to Melbourne all the time,” he said. “We stopped a few times, I filmed some farms and sheep… so I’d say just go out there and film anything, then go back and edit it, try to make something out of it.” He is continuing to work on his portfolio, with the screenplay for a film called ‘Racquet’ currently in the works, set only on a tennis court. The Emerging Filmmaker Award was established in 2019 to recognise Victorians 25 years of age and under, who show excellence, talent, and commitment to filmmaking. Skatespace grinds to halt By Helen Tatchell A project timeline that commenced with a draft design and community consultation last December, and due to be completed in June this year, is up in the air and with it, close to $500,000. The Gordon Public Park Improvements Plan is being delivered by Moorabool Shire Council, in partnership with the Parks Committee of Management and involves a new skate space and basketball practice court for the reserve. Currently, the reserve is home to tennis courts, a conversation corner, meeting rooms, public toilets, playground, and soon to be built, bbq, seating and a solid roof structure. The Gordon community took to social media after they got wind the project may lose the Federal funding to build the skate space and basketball court as the Committee of Management has not signed off on the application, which would then be signed off by DEWLP with Council then submitting the completed application to the Federal government. Money would then be handed over with contractors due to start this week however, that is now on hold. Derek Madden CEO Council told the Moorabool News there is a very likely possibility the funds could be lost if the Gordon Public Park Committee of Management do not sign off. “We are working with the two committee members at the moment with a meeting scheduled for early this week to achieve the adequate sign off. Council has received external funding for significant works at that park and have done extensive consultation to identify what was required.” Mr Madden said the funding had to be utilised by the end of this financial year. “This is not Council land, it is DELWP land and for Council to do any works on that land we need not just the permission from DELWP but from the committee that was appointed by them,” he said. “The hold-up at this time is the liaison with the

committee looking at the proposals. In our eyes the engagement has been done and has changed significantly during the consultation from what the community wanted to utilise that park for. “Council was of the understanding everything was moving forward, and the works tendered. We are hoping to find a resolution this week so these works can then commence within two weeks.” Dina Bowman is the Secretary and Treasurer of the Gordon Public Park Committee and said on social media they had expressed concerns to Council officers in relation to safety and drainage. “The layout proposed by Council is not consistent with the current Reserve Master Plan.” She told the Moorabool News it was mainly the “orientation of the skate space, highlighted safety and drainage concerns.” “I am not going to go into detail, we’d rather have that discussion around the table with Council in a considered way. We are keen to resolve them,” she said. “It is puzzling how this fuss and bother on social media came about when we have not been informed of any deadline to sign off by Council.” On social media Ms Bowman said Council officers have not responded in any meaningful way to the committee’s concerns. “The committee continues its efforts in working with Council on improving the park for the community.” Chair of the committee Heidi Johnson said she wanted everyone in the community to “rest assured Gordon WILL have an awesome SkateSpace in 2022. “There was NEVER any doubt about it,” she wrote on social media. If the adequate sign off does not eventuate this week, the $475,000 over the next two years could expire. Council does have the option of possibly asking the Federal government to hold over the funds and then divert them to another recreation reserve in the area, with Springbank, Bungaree or Dunnstown at the top of the list.

Support for post-COVID wellbeing Caught, allegedly impersonating police

To say the last few years have been tough for small businesses would be a huge understatement, but a State Government initiative is offering a helping hand, with free counselling and support. The Partners in Wellbeing program is offering access to Wellbeing Coaches to help deal with mental health concerns such as anxiety and depression, and professional mentoring to keep businesses running. Nicki Paull is one of the program’s Consultant Clinicians, and explained how the Partners in Wellbeing program works. “I and my Consultant Clinician colleagues are each ‘embedded’ within a number of Victorian Peak Bodies and Chambers of Commerce who, in turn, serve and support small business operators across numerous sectors: for example, hospitality, nurseries, tourism, sport, hotels, music industry and local

municipalities,” she told the Moorabool News. “People can either book directly through the link, or come to us via their own representative organisation. We offer free and confidential counselling, financial counselling or business advisory to Victorian small business management, staff and their families.” She said getting the word out that support was available had proven a challenge. “This fantastic Victorian Government initiative is quietly addressing the difficulty of accessing mental health support for rural and regional small business, as well as city venues. Telehealth can reach into areas where well-being support is scarce,” Ms Paull said. President of the Ballan & District Chamber of Commerce, Michael Ryan, said the initiative was particularly promising, given the stress of running a business through the pandemic. “All those sorts of things are very important in the business environment,

particularly at the moment and especially for small and micro businesses who don’t have access to HR departments like bigger businesses do…so I think it’s a fantastic opportunity for people who are struggling to get help,” he told the Moorabool News. “The stress has been exacerbated hugely by COVID, you just can’t be sure when the next customer is going to walk through the door. Small businesses in Ballan, during lockdown, there wasn’t much traffic on the highway... clearly the levels of stress are high. “And there’s still a lot of catch-up to be done, there’s a lot of costs that have been incurred that may never be recovered, to be honest. A Moorabool man alleged to have impersonated police last week has been apprehended and is expected to face court. Police allege a grey four-wheel drive ute, driving south on Ballan Road at around 7.20 am on Monday, 28 February, displayed red and blue flashing lights while driving erratically. A 19-year-old Mount Egerton man was interviewed by police, and a spokesperson for Victoria Police told the Moorabool News the man is “expected to be summonsed to appear before a court”, charged with impersonating a police officer. By Lachlan Ellis Council will officially cease delivering aged care and disability services from 1 July this year, following a decision at the 3 March Ordinary Meeting of Council.

The successor provider has not yet been decided by the Commonwealth, but Council has asked for a decision within the next four weeks.

The move confirms an in-principle decision made in December 2021, prompted by a decision from the Commonwealth Government to transition out of funding services funded under the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP), Home and Community Care Program for Younger People (HACC-PYP), and Regional Assessment Services (RAS). At the 3 March meeting, Councillors approved a range of recommendations, including accepting that “Moorabool Shire Council, along with many other Victorian councils, will not be able to play a meaningful future role in service delivery” due to cost and other challenges.

“We’ve had our first staff briefing with half of our team… it’s obviously a challenging day, but the staff responded very well to the briefing. If there’s a silver lining, it’s that our staff are so incredibly skilled and qualified in what they do, and there’s such a shortage of high-quality and skilled workers in this sector,” she told the Moorabool News. “Any new provider coming in will need to employ new staff to fill the service requirements for Moorabool, so our staff are certainly in a very good position in terms of future employment opportunities. As part of our obligations to current staff, they’re also able to access outplacement training – so we can offer resume writing, interview preparation, and job search support.” A letter went out to clients of the Aged Care program on Monday 7 March, and Council plans to case manage each client once the provider is known with clients’ consent, to ensure the new provider can meet their individual needs.

Inspect your dam to avoid failure “Gully dams are of particular concern as much of the water is stored above ground level and held back by an earthen bank,” he said. The sudden failure of a gully dam can pose a major safety issue to individuals and communities downstream, as well as resulting in the loss of the water and added cost of repairs. Mr Sturmfels recommends taking a systematic approach when undertaking a dam inspection. “Start by walking around the waterline looking for signs of damage. I usually commence my inspection at the dam inlet checking for signs of undermining or collapse, making sure the dam excavation is completely covered with water when the dam is full. “Take careful note of the water itself, look for signs of discolouration or small whirlpools that may indicate tunnelling or leakage through the dam wall. Then move on to the dam wall itself checking the crest, upstream and downstream faces. From Agriculture Victoria

If you are a young musician or an aspiring event organiser, Council wants you. They require people to put their hands up to organise a youth-led event, with free training and remuneration on offer. As part of the ‘Live and Local Program’, Council has invited residents aged between 12 and 25 to apply for the ‘Young and Local Music Program’, which will provide a series of three-hour workshops and short presentations throughout April and May. The workshops will be followed by the Moorabool Live and Local Event in June, with program participants performing, organising the sound and lighting, and managing the event. Program participants will not only get the chance to collaborate with peers, learn from experts in the events industry, and hone their performance skills, all for free – they will also get paid for their performance and production work. Musicians should have at least basic skills in their chosen instrument and be able to play a song all the way through, but no prior experience is needed for production and event management, with the necessary skills to be taught through the program. By Lachlan Ellis Playground equipment at Maddingley Park has been missing since December, but Council says parents and kids can expect to see them back within the next three months. The swings were removed just before Christmas last year due to safety concerns, and Council has apologised for the wait, but said safety will always be its highest priority. “Council removed two swing assemblies from Maddingley Park Adventure Playground on 22 December 2021, as a result of several safety related defects. Replacement assemblies have been ordered, with an expected installation timeframe of late May/early June,” Council CEO Derek Madden told the Moorabool News. “The delay in installing the replacement equipment is a result of a high demand of materials and labour shortages from the supplier. The fort and bridge structure were also barricaded off, preventing use, due to structural issues that are currently being investigated.” Mr Madden said Council apologises for any inconvenience this has caused. “However, the safety of playground users will always take precedence.”

Recycled water boost for region

The Western Irrigation Network has taken a crucial step towards delivering a new reliable water supply to local farmers, with water now flowing into the recently completed recycled water storage dam in Melton. The new storage dam at the 1.1 gigalitre Melton Recycled Water Plant will be used to irrigate thousands of hectares of farmland from early 2023. The Western Irrigation Network is delivering more than 50 kilometres of pipeline to bring recycled water to the region, transforming it from dryland farming to a thriving agricultural precinct. Other works underway include the construction of infrastructure to connect existing recycled water supplies between the Melton and Bacchus Marsh plants to feed into the network.

Member for Melton Steve McGhie said unreliable rainfall has been a significant issue for local farmers. “This new recycled water supply will help them to grow the district’s economy.” The $116.3 million Western Irrigation Network project is jointly funded by the Victorian ($65.6 million) and Australian ($48.1 million) governments and other partners ($2.6 million), delivered in partnership with Greater Western Water and local farmers. Combined with existing storages, the dam will be part of a network capable of supplying 18.3 gigalitres of recycled water a year by 2050. With access to a new water supply, the local farming community will be able to expand agricultural production, generating local jobs and growth in Victoria’s agriculture sector.

Funds for storm-hit producers Grants of up to $25,000 are on offer under a State and Federal Government program, to help primary producers affected by June 2021’s floods and storms. Producers from storm-affected areas in a range of local government areas, including Moorabool Shire and Hepburn Shire, are encouraged to apply. The ‘Victorian Floods and Storms Clean-Up and Restoration Grants’ can be spent on a range of costs incurred due to the floods and storms that occurred from June 9 – 11, including removing fallen trees, erosion mediation, and repairs or replacement of farm infrastructure. To be eligible, applicants must be a primary producer earning more than 50 per cent of their income from the affected farming business, hold an Australian Business Number (ABN) and have held that ABN during the disaster, have a primary production enterprise in the area that suffered direct damage from the disaster, carried on the primary production when affected by the disaster, and intend to re-establish the primary production enterprise. Opinion piece – Fix farm trespass laws Victorian farmers waited two long years for tough new on-the-spot fines to stop farm invasions that threaten their safety and farm biosecurity. But last month, the Labor Party teamed up with the Greens to block amendments that would have doubled the maximum fine for illegal entry on Victorian farms. Stopping these amendments is a move that will only embolden the extreme law-breaking activists these farm trespass laws were supposed to deter. After the Aussie Farms controversy, New South Wales and Queensland quickly took a stand, introducing stronger protections against farm trespass by the end of 2019. But here in Victoria, our farmers waited almost three years for Labor’s Agriculture Minister Mary-Anne Thomas to finally introduce the Livestock Management (Animal Activism) Bill 2021 in the last parliamentary sitting week of 2021. When we saw the detail of the Bill, it was clear why the Minister had taken so long to act. The changes simply don’t go far enough to properly deter the illegal actions of extreme law-breaking activists. Rather than standing with our farmers, Labor’s proposed penalties that are among the lowest in the nation. The Minister has also excluded a farmer’s river frontage lease land from protections under these laws. It’s a Bill that, if it isn’t changed, will leave farm families exposed to further trauma of illegal, late-night militant invasions by strangers, clad in black, with the single-minded goal of destroying the livelihoods of our food producers. To remedy the Bill’s shortfalls, I proposed two reasonable amendments that would have ensured the protection of farms with river frontage and doubled the maximum fine for individuals to bring Victoria appropriately into line with the equivalent fine in New South Wales. Unfortunately, Labor and the Greens reacted by attacking the Liberals and Nationals while immediately refusing to consider our important and reasonable amendments. It’s perhaps no wonder when nearly half of Labor’s MPs rely on the support of Greens preference to get re-elected. Labor MP Danielle Green claimed in her own contribution to Parliament that the Liberals and Nationals are playing “political games” with our amendment. To the contrary, it is the Labor Party and the Greens who are playing political games with the safety of law-abiding Victorian farmers and farming families. Labor’s Minister for Agriculture was not even present for most of the debate in Parliament. The Liberals and Nationals will reintroduce our amendments when it goes to the Upper House of Parliament for debate. Hopefully next time around it will be with Labor and crossbench support. We must strengthen trespass laws to send a strong message to those who would go to any lengths to destroy the livelihood of hard-working Victorian farm families. If the Parliament can’t back the farmers who provide our food and fibre and manage much of our landscape, then it’s not doing its job. Peter Walsh Leader of the Nationals

With a tick over a lap to go Kate advanced Vintage Cheddar from near the back of the field to make a play for the breeze, but that was thwarted when Glenn Douglas popped out on Major Roll to lead the three-wide line. Breeze horse Western Sonador, sitting outside leader Jilliby Sylvester, kicked up to hold Major Roll on his outside and that left Vintage Cheddar three-wide with cover for the last lap.

The moves quickened the pace with 28.23 and 27.84 second and third quarters and come the last turn Vintage Cheddar was four wide and with brilliant finisher Bulletproof Boy breathing down his neck. But the new arrival had the answers to score by a half-head, which Kate said was “a really good win and he had to do a bit of work”. “I was talking to Andy before the race and he thought Bulletproof Boy was the one to beat because he can just beat anything. We knew if the tempo was on, he’d be rattling home. “Luckily we were able to hold on and to my horse’s credit he’s done a really good job. To win from barrier 11 is really not easy and he’s been able to do it, so hopefully that can continue.” *** It was the first of a double for Kate and Andy Gath with Vacation Hill following up to win the Catanach’s Jewellers Trotters Free For All. Kate found the front without wasting any great energy and was then able to control the race for the final sprint home, with leading threat Wobelee able to get a cushy run on her back late but only able to narrow the margin to two metres. *** Another horse who continues to impress is Cheyella, Laura Crossland’s four-year-old mare who registered a fourth win in six outings, pairing with reinsman Damian Wilson to win the Hip Pocket Workwear & Safety Pace. “She just keeps surprising us,” Wilson said. “Every time she steps out she goes better. The race turned out perfect tonight.” *** Denis William was also impressive in bouncing back for trainer-driver Simone Walker, who took advantage of the early pace to box on well late and win by 1.2 metres from Ozzie Battler in the Celebrating 60 Years Of Darren Watson Pace. *** Reinsman Mark Pitt registered a treble with two-year-old Ambiguous (for trainer Wayne Potter) and three-year-old Beach Life (for trainer Emma Stewart) winning the TAB Long May We Play Premiere Stakes and Woodlands Stud 3YO Pace respectively. Pitt then capped the night with his third victory, ringing up a double for Emma Stewart, as Go Dancing showed why punters backed him into a $1.10 with a dominant win in the Allied Express Vicbred Pace. *** Wheres Seggy (Joe Pace/James Herbertson) and Teetreetommy (Michael Barby/Anne-Maree Conroy) got the ball rolling in races one and two, where they found the front and scored, with the latter making it two on the trot in claiming the Beraldo Coffee Trot.

Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics The heavy overnight rainfalls on Friday did not prevent the athletes coming out in force for their weekly athletics competition on Saturday morning. Athletes and family members participated in walking a lap of the Masons Lane Reserve running track, collecting gold coin donations for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal. The Centre raised $273.15. Competition soon got underway. Although a heavy track from the overnight rain, many athletes recorded PBs, as they continue to improve ‘week in-week out’. This week’s PB awards went to Jazelle Pio, David Elefterescu, Zeke Horne and Lenny Closter – each achieving 4PBs for the meet. With only three weeks left of competition, athletes will be busy competing in three major meets in coming weeks. Next weekend the Bacchus Marsh Centre will have 17 athletes representing the Centre at the State Track & Field Championships to be held at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park. The following Saturday, 19 March the Centre will be holding their inaugural Bacchus Marsh Community Bank 100m Gift prior to competition. An athlete from each age group will be invited to participate in the handicapped 100m Gift. There will be a Girls and Boys race. On Saturday 26 March, the summer season will come to a conclusion, with the Centre Championship Day being held. Next week’s Centre meet will be held on Friday evening commencing at 5pm, due to the State Championships.

Under 11s - (R11) The Wednesday night game was against Golden Point. Ballan batted first and made 84 (6 outs). Hunter Clark put his hand up to open and then also to face, in his allotted balls he was not dismissed. Mickey Rawlins top scored with 19, followed by Banjo Luke and Cooper Olthof. Due to the closeness of the game Kiara Grigg was asked to not go out, and she did a great job by adhering to the message. Golden Point then batted and made 74 (9 outs), Ned Conroy and Cooper each got two wickets, Hunter Clark, Ed Bayard and Kiara Grigg recorded one wicket each. Charlie, Lachie, and Banjo bowled tight when it counted. Batting first and in drizzling rain, the top order batted very well, playing aggressive shots and running very well between the wickets immediately putting pressure on the opposition. Sarah Burton and Eamon Grigg both scored new individual highest scores in the U/13 competition. While all the other batters contributed valuable runs as the team only lost one wicket on their way to posting their highest score of 147 for the year. The rain continued as the bowling innings commenced. The bowlers struggled a little with their line as the opposition appeared to have a never ending supply of left handed batters. Clover McIlwaine was the sole wicket taker as the team toiled away in greasy conditions with the combined effort of Max Farrell, Eamon Grigg and Sarah Burton affecting a run out. Followed by Jai Singh fielding off his own bowling for a second run out. Midway through the innings the team lost concentration allowing the opposition back in the game. With four overs to go, the opposition needed 18 runs to win. Co-Captains Sarah Burton and Clover McIlwaine again took on the challenge to bowl the final overs, restricting the opposition to only nine runs to seal the victory and lock in a well-deserved place in the finals. **All other matches were abandoned due to inclement weather on the Saturday.

Lions retain 'culture' coach By Todd Whelan Brian Wheelahan will remain at the helm for a fourth season into 2022/23 after the Darley Cricket Club secured the current dual Premiership winning coach's signature recently. After considerate discussions with immediate family, the 42-year-old was given the green light to commit to the Lions citing a 'there's more to do' mantra despite the clubs golden run of recent success, especially in First Grade. "My work's not done here," a humble Wheelahan said. "It's not all about the one's and matchday. "Nothing gives me more pleasure than overseeing the development of our younger players coming through the grades. "The club is in a really good space at the moment," he said. While Wheelahan's player to coach journey spans 13-years at the Lions, the former leg spinning all-rounder sounded just as motivated as if it were his first. "I'm rapt to be a part of the immediate future at Darley," he said. "The connection amongst the players is palpable and with the renovations going on around the club at the moment, there's exciting times ahead. "Everybody here cares, it's a second family for most of us and we'll continue with our commitment to grow and remain a destination club for all the right reasons."

According to Lions Club President Tim Gallagher and Life Member Benny Longhurst, the decision to sign Wheelahan before the end of this season was all about consolidation and security with an eye to the future. "Brian's re-appointment was a 'no brainer' for us," Gallagher said. "He's clearly the right man for the job, his record speaks for itself. "We're hopeful Brian's commitment has a domino effect on the playing group and their intentions to stay on with us through 2022/23." Longhurst later endorsed the sentiments of the President. "We're firm in the belief that there's more to do here and having 'Wheels' on board again was crucial for us to keep the ball rolling," he said. "You can expect more exciting announcements out of the Lions camp in coming weeks." Watch this space. For the record, Wheelahan's 48* game reign is deep into a third season and inevitable finals campaign. His returns are compelling. Two BCA First Grade Premierships headline an impressive 35 wins (@73%) and four draws. 'Wheels' as he is affectionately known, notched up his 50th game in the top job on March 5 in the penultimate round of the home and away season against ladder leaders Wendouree at Darley Park. Unfortunately the game was abandoned due to inclement weather.
