Ballan Cricket Club Results – Round 10 (4th Grade) Ballan 2nd XI v Napoleons-Sebastopol Batting - Max Burton 57, John Costello 16, Daniel Pascoe 15n.o, Param Singh 11n.o Bowling - Param Singh 1/7, Daniel Pascoe 1/8, Eli Muir 1/15, John Costello 1/18 Heavy weather dominated the atmosphere for the clash last weekend. Napoleons-Sebastopol won the coin toss and elected to bat on a damp, overcast afternoon. Ballan’s bowling line-up, the strongest it has had all season with 10 eager bowlers, put the clamps on and restricted the run scoring capabilities of the opening batters for NapoleonsSebastopol, despite a slippery ball. Eli Muir and Mackenzie Popple each delivered some quality opening bowling that included a wicket to Muir, with a catch by Burton at mid-off from a full-blooded drive. This allowed first change bowlers, Pascoe and Singh – with expertly crafted inswing and outswing, to further apply pressure and pick up a wicket each. At drinks after 20 overs, Napoleons-Sebastopol were 2/51. Again, Ballan’s strength was with experienced spin bowlers Leach, who was once again very tidy, and Costello - who missed out on three catching opportunities for a wicket, but picked up a scalp via a good catch to Michael Vallance at gully from a skied top edge. The run rate continued to trickle along, and Napoleons-Sebastopol finished their innings on 4/108 after 40 overs. With the opportunity for a win to Ballan presenting itself, Burton took the opportunity to open the batting with Costello for the first time this season. A solid partnership ensued with the runs slowly ticking over and at the drinks break Ballan were 0/55. Costello found himself out in the 22nd over and Singh entered the fray. Enjoying another solid partnership, Burton played a captain’s knock, leading from the front scoring 57, including four 4’s and four 6’s before being caught on the mid-wicket boundary in the 26th over with the score on 95. With the ground slowly drying up and under good conditions, Singh and Pascoe played soundly to guide Ballan home in the 28th over with a final score of 2/114, picking up a first win of the season.

Mt Clear v Ballan 1st XI (2nd Grade) Bowling - Kobe 5-10 off 8, Lachie 2-30 off 7, Benny 1-21 off 9. Guards 1-22 off 6 Batting - Lachie 39, Mark 22, Jacky 19, Hayden 17 After losing the toss and being sent into bowl, Ballan made a brilliant start with the ball with Kobe and Guards setting the tone, unfortunately a few missed chances through the middle overs let Mt Clear back into the game before Kobe and Lachie led the fight back with the ball to eventually restrict Mt Clear to 163, a very getable total on a good wicket. Kobe picked up his second five wicket haul in the process. With the bat, Ballan got off to a great start with Mark and Lachie setting a platform with a 63 run opening stand before Mt Clear really tightened the screws and constant wickets fell with some starts to middle order batsman, but unable to really go on with it making it tough which unfortunately led to the young Ballan side falling just short of the total only managing to make 153. A disappointing result in the end but a great test against a good side. Ballan look forward to this weekend in what shapes to be a season defining, where they play Wendouree on Saturday and Coronet on Sunday. Next week - Ballan v Buninyong at Victoria Park 7.

Unlucky with four edges not going to hands in one over, David Gardiner got 1/22.

Top scorer Lachie Snaith, hits a six over the bowlers head, he finished with 39 runs and 2/30 with the ball.

Picking up another 5-wicket haul, Kobe Heafield finished with 5/10 off 8 overs.

Lions win ‘bittersweet’ Darley Cricket Club - By Todd Whelan Darley’s fighting seven wicket win over North Ballarat has been overshadowed by the imminent departure of star batting all-rounder Danza Hyatt, who prepares for a return to his native Jamaica in the coming days. Hyatt’s 56 game contribution over three seasons has been significant to say the least, both on and off the field, and was duly recognised by his peers on Saturday night as “the best they’ve seen”. Lions coach Brian Wheelahan, Club President Tim Gallagher and Life Member David Hoey, addressed a core group of Lions faithful at the Darley Hub on Saturday night to reflect on Hyatt’s achievements and how he’s changed the dynamic of how others see the Darley Cricket Club, still riding high on the back of dual BCA First Grade Premierships. “You can’t replace champions,” Wheelahan said. “We’ve been so fortunate to have a player of Danza’s ilk with us for the last three seasons - he hits the ball like no-one I’ve seen (at this level). “While we’ll miss Danza, and recognise challenges lay ahead (in his absence), we’re hopeful the opportunity that awaits the incumbent is taken with both hands.” President Tim Gallagher recognised the influence Hyatt has had on the youth at the club acknowledging ‘already made’ progress on field. “Some of our youngsters have really come along, reaping the benefits of Danza’s experience and advice not only at training but in his own time as well,” he said. “Our club is entirely grateful for Danza’s contribution”. Life member David Hoey made some lighthearted observations on his time hosting Danza who initially stayed with his family ahead of his debut 2018/19 season. While ‘Dave’ openly conceded articulation was not his forte - he would soon exceed any (of his own) expectation to deliver in spades - an enlightening verse full of humour, warmth and appreciation. “I never thought I would see any better than Matthew Cape - that’s how good Danza is,” he said. Hyatt later told the room of his love for the club and described his exit to be bittersweet.

“While I’d love to play out the rest of the season, I’m looking forward to seeing my family.” he said. “I haven’t seen for them for over two years.” Hyatt said he will be watching on with much interest. “I hope you believe in yourselves to go on and win a third straight. “I know we can do it,” Hyatt said with a reassuring steely look in his eye. Hyatt’s rap sheet at the Lions will be talked about for seasons to come. The former West Indian International finished with 2521 runs at a remarkable 52.52 average. The ‘Danza’ show included five centuries and 18 fifties along the way including more boundaries that many a talent would only dream of in a lifetime of cricket. But now, the show must go on. While questions will be asked of a Lions line-up without Hyatt, there is comfort for Wheelahan and his Pride knowing only they hold the answers.
